                    authorized Softdisk Publishing edition

Thank you for purchasing the registered version of BooksNexus. We welcome
you as a valued user of this program.

BooksNexus must be installed on a hard drive. Do not attempt to install
to, or run the program on, a floppy drive.

  To install, type:

                 A:INSTALL <enter> or B:INSTALL <enter>

where A: or B: indicates the source drive.

The source drive (containing install.exe) MUST be different from the
target drive. There must be about 1.2mb of free space available on the
target hard drive or the install process will be incomplete, with
indication of an error and an exit to DOS. After installation, the
program uses significantly less space than during the installation
procedure. The install process will create a directory, if needed, on
the destination drive, the default selection being \BOOKSNX. The install
process does NOT modify your path, autoexec.bat, or config.sys.

Use of INSTALL.EXE provides verification along with installation and
provides opportunity to print the documentation (about 14 pages).

After a NEW installation, the following 6 files must be present in the
\BOOKSNX directory for a complete installation:

                               PRINTER.DB
                               BOOKSNX.DB
                               BOOKSNX.EXE
                               BOOKSNX.DOC
                               _7OVERL.EXE
                               _ADMIN7.PCX

(Several index files (*.ix) will be built when the program first executes.)

  After installation, type:

                               BOOKSNX <enter>

to run the program. In the program itself, press <Alt-M> to access the
  on-line documentation.

The distributed files in this registered-version package are:

                     README.TXT (this file)
                     INSTALL.EXE
__007A.EXE (compressed file containing executable &
                                     administrative upgrade files)
                     __007B.EXE (compressed file containing original
                                     sample data table)
                     __007C.EXE (compressed file containing registered
                                     executable upgrade file)

BEFORE contacting RCCO Research as regards this program, please be
------------------------------------------------------------------
mindful of the following information:
-------------------------------------
It has been our observation over the several years this program has been
out, that the most frequent request (at least 90%) for help has involved
index files that no longer match the data table. For some reason, users
sometimes try to inadvertantly mix index files (*.ix) that were created or
updated at a different time or date from the main data table. The
mismatched index files can come from backups, another copy of the program,
from a floppy, or other source. The point is, if ALL the index files do
not MATCH that which is contained in the data table, the result will be a
data table that will be unreadable, or out of sequence, with jumbled or
garbled words or characters, or it may not show data at all even though
the user is absolutely sure the data is (or "was") contained within the
table. In short, if the indexes are OUT OF SYNC with the data table, they
WILL NOT WORK at all with the table.

Index files are responsible for maintaining the various sort orders of the
data in the table: that is, sorted by title, by date, or whatever you
select before entering the table view of the program. They also help
prepare the printed reports. Index files maintain a "pointer" to each and
every record in the main data table, so that the sorts are quick, efficient,
and accurate. Should a record in the table not have a corresponding
pointer in each index file, the index files will no longer match the data
table. The program will appear to stop operating properly on data that
was indeed properly entered and saved. We have heard from users that the
program "worked fine up until today and now it just displays garbage (or
jumbled or garbled words or characters, or whatever)." In each instance
we have taken the time to reply that the user is to delete the existing
index files (i.e., del *.ix) from the directory as is exactly outlined in
the section in the documentation headed "Technical Matters." So far, we do
not know of a single instance whereby this action did not fix the "problem."

For some reason, a few users are fearful of attempting to delete files from
a directory on their computer. We can understand this. However, the index
files for this program, IF ABSENT (i.e., they were deleted), will again be
newly CREATED by the program when it is next run. It is a fast and safe
operation typical of database programs of this type. Do NOT be hesitant
about deleting index files and then re-running the program to allow them
to be rebuilt -- even if you think the problem could not or should not be
the index files. PLEASE try this if you ever experience difficulty in
running the program BEFORE contacting RCCO Research for technical support.
It will probably save you a great deal of time and effort (and worry about
your valuable data), and will save RCCO Research from having to generate a
response about your problem that will include exactly the same information
outlined above.

WINDOWS 3.1 and WINDOWS 95 SETUP
---------------------------------

Q. How may I add this program to my Windows environment?

A. Windows 3.1:
   ------------
To set up this application to run from Windows(R) 3.1 Program Manager,
first install the program normally from DOS or within a full DOS window.

Next, make the desired Program Group in which you wish to place this
program the current group (that is, click on the Title Bar of the group
to highlight it as the current one).

From the File Menu, select New. Then select Program Item. Choose OK.
Type in "BooksNexus" as the Description line. For the Command Line,
enter the drive, directory, and name of the executable filename; i.e.,

            C:\BOOKSNX\BOOKSNX.EXE

if you have installed to the C: drive and in the default directory name
   suggested by the Installation program.

For the Working Directory, indicate the above directory:

            C:\BOOKSNX

You may skip the Shortcut Key designation and the Run Minimized check box.

In the Program Item Properties box, click on OK.

The Program Group item for the application will be created. To launch the
program from Windows, you need only double-click on the resulting default
   icon for the program.

Make sure you are running this program in a full MS-DOS screen; it will
not run in an MS-DOS window. This setting is made in your _DEFAULT.PIF
file (in the Windows directory) with the PIF File Editor. To start the
PIF Editor, open the Main program group and double-click on the PIF Editor
icon. When the PIF Editor window is open, select the File menu, then
Open. Choose the _DEFAULT.PIF file in the Windows directory. Click on OK
to open the file in the Editor. Select Full Screen under Display Usage if
it is not already selected. Click on the check box for Close Window on
Exit to place an X in that box if it does not yet contain one. Generally,
you may leave the Video Memory setting set on Text and all other settings
are left alone as they originally appeared. Click on the File menu, then
select Save. You may then close out the PIF Editor. (Please note that
the Display Usage setting is only applicable in 386 Enhanced mode and the
instructions in this paragraph are only applicable to Windows 3.1.)

   Windows 95:
   -----------
This program has been fully tested by RCCO Research to run under Windows
   95. Many users will note immediate benefits in terms of the program's
execution speed and smoothness of the video screens, particularly if you
are running Windows 95 on a Pentium (or 80486) system.

To set up the application to run in Windows 95, first install the program
normally from a full MS-DOS screen. (See the Readme.txt file for
instructions in running Install.exe from MS-DOS.) You must observe MS-DOS
filenaming conventions when naming a directory (folder) in which the
program will be installed (most users will accept the suggested default,
C:\BOOKSNX); that is, the folder name must be eight characters or less
with no spaces or other characters not allowable under traditional
MS-DOS naming conventions. When reading the program's online documenta-
tion, you may wish to mentally substitute the word "folder" whenever
   "directory" is mentioned.

In Windows 95, to add this program to your Start Menu:
     1. Click on Start.
     2. Move the mouse pointer up to Settings.
     3. Click on Taskbar...
     4. Select the 'Start Menu Programs' tab.
     5. Click on Add.
     6. Click on Browse, then navigate to the application's executable
file, BOOKSNX.EXE, by first double-clicking to the folder or
sub-folder in which it exists. Select BOOKSNX.EXE. Click on Open.
     7. Now the Command line shows the path to the application's
         executable file. Click on Next.
     8. Choose a folder in which the shortcut to the program will
appear (or select New Folder if one is desired).
     9. Click on Next.
    10. At the prompt 'Select a name for the shortcut,' type in
         "BooksNexus."
    11. Click on Finish. This returns you to the Taskbar Properties window.
    12. Under the Advanced Settings you will have to specify that this
program is to run in a FULL MS-DOS SCREEN. This program will
not run in an MS-DOS window.

Advanced Settings (on the Taskbar Properties window):
         A. Click on Advanced.
         B. Click on the plus sign (+) to open the Programs folder.
         C. Click on the folder containing the new shortcut to
              the program.
         D. RIGHT-click on the shortcut itself. Select Properties.
Click on the Program tab, then click on the "Close on exit"
box to place a check mark there. Next, click on the Screen
tab. Click on Full-Screen under Usage. Click on Apply at
the bottom of the window. Click on OK.
         E. Close out the Exploring window.

    13. When you return to the Taskbar Properties window for the final time,
         click on OK.

Q. Isn't there really a way to run this program in an MS-DOS window (rather
   than a full screen)?

A. There is, but you must accept the condition that the startup splashscreen
logo will not be usable. It is actually only the logo display that
requires a full DOS screen, not the program code itself. Here is how to
run the rest of the program from an MS-DOS window:

You will be running the overlay file directly, rather than using the
loader program (BOOKSNX.EXE) that displays the logo image while the
program loads. The result is a few seconds of blank screen before the
program appears, but it will then run well in an MS-DOS window under
   the Microsoft Windows operating system.

Simply specify that the program file to execute is _7OVERL.EXE rather
than BOOKSNX.EXE. BOOKSNX.EXE must still be present at all times in the
program directory/folder, however; you must not delete or move this
   file.

We suggest that the MS-DOS window be set to run Maximized (appearing
as the full width of the 640x480 VGA screen, with the proportional height
displayed automatically), utilizing the 8 x 12 Bitmap (NOT TrueType) font.
In this manner, the program will appear its optimal best within an MS-DOS
window. Of course, while running in an MS-DOS window, you may utilize the
Copy and Paste functions of the Windows Clipboard as well as do
multitasking and task switching between other application windows.
