Multiply and Divide with Hairy Bug

                            PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
                            -------------------
Purpose
Multiply and Divide with Hairy Bug, is designed to assist children in
learning multiplication and division in a pleasant and efficient way.

The program takes into account the three steps needed to acquire
multiplication and division skills:

Understand the meaning of the mathematical operation.
        Memorize the multiplication table.
Compute the answers to the excercises.

How do children learn to multiply and divide with the help of Hairy Bug?

The program offers the child a selection of the following activities:

        Up and Down the Stairs
        Multiplication Tables
        Math Lane
        Cards Adventure

Each activity presents a different view of the mathematical content.

Up and Down the stairs is the easiest activity that consists of arithmetical
sequences. The student has to climb up (or down) the stairs while adding
(or subtracting ) a constant number (0,2,4,6,...20 etc.). It is a wonderful
introduction to multiplication and division.

Multiplication Tables is a visual way to learn multiplication. In order to
solve 5X4, for example, the child draws in his imagination a rectangle of
that size and then the program fills an area of 20 yellow bricks showing
the result of the operation.

Math Lane is a collection of exercises starting from very easy exercises
like 2X2 and up to division exercises with a remainder. It works like a
personal tutor; The program "feels" where the child needs help and offers
it in a very friendly way. The program illustrates the meaning of the
mathematical operation, and helps the child solve the excercises.

Cards Adventure is a cards matching game, where the child has to match the
exercise card to the correct answer card. This game is designed to improve
the speed of the student's computation skill.

General
-- All the activities are organized in well-defined gradual levels.
-- Each activity has a clearly stated learning goal.
-- Activities are simple, clear and self-explained, which allow the child
to concentrate on the mathematical issues.
-- The menu structure enable the child to plan his own learning.
-- The student can choose both the activity and the level of difficulty
    directly from the menu.

The program takes into account that children like variaty and prefer not
to stay in the same activity for a long time. Therefore there is always an
option to quit an activity by pressing Esc, and move on to another activity.

The major advantage of the program is its ability to give the student a
personal assistance: It "pays attention" to the time required to solve a
problem and if it takes the student too long, the program would offer an on
line help that simplifies the problem. The student's weaker learning areas
are recorded in an internal mistakes-stack which records the student's
progress. The program is designed to take care of these weaker areas
and will provide the exercises to enhance them.

Randomization in exercises
Exercises appear in a random order, yet the program will take into account
the differences in the level of difficulty, and it will give more weight
to the difficult exercises which need more attention.

In order to acquire multiplication and division skills, the student usually
needs a great deal of practice, that might become a problem for the young
child. Hairy bug was designed as a funny friendly creature in order to give
the child the right attitude towards practicing, which is needed in his
future studies of mathematics.

Minimum system requirements: PC 386; SVGA or VGA; Mouse.
