If a picture is worth a thousand words, a medium-res image is usually worth a
few hundred lines of code -- experienced programmers know that title screens and
other graphics can make an otherwise ordinary program special.

^1ARTIST^0 is an drawing program that programmers can use to create medium-res
screens. But you don't have to be a programmer to enjoy the easy-to-use ^1ARTIST^0
-- anyone can use the program to explore the effects made possible by IBM
graphics.

Using the Program
-----------------
As with any drawing program, mastering ^1ARTIST^0 requires a little
experimentation. ^1ARTIST^0 is a blank slate; you supply the skill and imagination.

When you run ^1ARTIST^0, the program first displays a help screen that tells you
how to create, edit, and save images. You move the cursor or "brush" across the
drawing screen with keys on the numeric keypad. While working, you may choose
to draw lines in one of three brush colors; the width of your lines may be
changed as well.

You can even "paint" portions of your screen with one of several different
patterns. Just enclose a region of the drawing screen with lines of the same
color -- a green box for example --then choose the pattern you want the region
filled with. You tell ^1ARTIST^0 which region to fill by specifying the region's
border color, green in this case. ^1ARTIST^0 can also do some of the drawing for
you -- it can plot boxes, circles, polygons, and other shapes on the screen.
Again, a little trial and error is the best way to learn how to use this
feature. Erasing lines and changing screen colors is simple as well -- just
consult the help screen. (Pressing the Alt-H combination displays the help
screen.)

After the help screen is displayed, ^1ARTIST^0 displays a main menu with options
to start, edit, or quit. If you're beginning a picture, choose the Start
option. You'll be prompted to enter a filename for your creation. If you would
like to edit an existing picture, choose the Edit option and follow the prompts
to load an image. The Quit option returns you to BIG BLUE DISK.

^1ARTIST^0 gives you several options once a picture is created. Pressing Alt-C
clears the screen and returns you to the main menu. Alt-F1 saves the drawing to
screen memory; Alt-F2 recalls it from screen memory. Finally, Alt-F3 saves the
image to disk.

Note: when you save a picture to disk, ^1ARTIST^0 creates a 16K binary file.
Since there is not room on BIG BLUE DISK for this size file, you must save your
ARTISTic creations on another disk.

To run this program outside BIG BLUE DISK, enter: ^1ARTIST^0.
