River City Girls FAQ/Walkthrough Created by: DarthInsipidus Email: dwsnjms@yahoo.com Version 1.1 Copyright 2019 DarthInsipidus —————————————— Introduction —————————————— I am DarthInsipidus and this is my first FAQ/Walkthrough. Admittedly I was slow to get into this series, but I’m glad I did. This series is an awesome complement to the Double Dragon series. Years ago I had the chance to pick up a used copy of River City Ransom for the Nintendo Entertainment System at a K-Mart. At that time I had never heard of this game. The artwork of the cartridge was weak and made me think it was going to be one of those stupid preachy “Just Say No to Drugs/Gangs” games like Narc or Bad Street Brawler (it would take me a while to realize that I couldn’t have been more wrong). In any case, I passed that game by. However, my interest would be piqued bit by bit. First it was by a letter in a 1997 issue of Nintendo Power asking why River City Ransom wasn’t included in their ‘top 100 Nintendo console games of all time’ article in a previous issue. Later every once in a while I would read an article here and an article there, each singing the praises of this ‘overlooked gem’. Fast forward to 2003. I just bought Double Dragon Advance (and thoroughly enjoyed it) and had just heard that a remake of River City Ransom was going to be released for the Game Boy Advance. By this time I had come to understand that this was a beat-em-up in the same vein as Double Dragon (a series that I had always loved) and that the game was nowhere as dorky as I thought it would was. I was willing to game the game a try. In 2004 I finally got myself a copy of River City Ransom EX for the GBA and immediately loved it. I realized that I wanted more. Fast forward now to 2019. I now see this trailer for River City Girls on YouTube. What? Fifteen years for another River City Ransom console game? C’mon, guys. Give us Westerners some more love here. In any case, I was stoked to hear that another River City game was coming out for the consoles so when River City Girls finally came out I downloaded my copy as soon as I could. And I’m glad I did. This is a great game that I feel deserves a FAQ. Now I’m waiting for Arc System Works to release River City Underground (another RCR game I only just heard about) for the consoles. Also just downloaded Stay Cool, Kobayashi-San. I’ll let you know how that one is. I still regret not snatching up the NES cart when I had the chance. I guess I really shouldn’t judge a game by its box art Mega Man 2 Godhand Castlevania SOTN Brawl Brothers … —————————————— Legal Business —————————————— ©2019 DarthInspidus. Both students have a running attack that is hard to dodge, but the Female’s running kick can always track you, even if you are not parallel to her. Never try to move out of the way of the Female’s running kick. Block the running attacks, then counterattack. You can try to hit either out of the dash, but that’s more risky. If a Student either keeps his/her distance from you or stays put from afar, s/he is preparing to do a running attack. Beware the Male’s sand throw, which will put you in a stun. Evade it. The Female can do it if she is close. This can be a real pain in the neck, as the running kick comes out lightning fast and can out-prioritize your punches, making it a cheap move that you don’t see coming at all. [Some words about New Game+: Note: things in brackets (i.e., [ xxxx ]) apply to New Game+ only. In New Game+, you will encounter enemies from later areas in the second wave of enemies in a stage. This means that if this is your first play-through, then you won’t have to worry about encountering Yakuza in River City High or Cyborgs in the Mall. Kunio and Riki are playable only in New Game+ only. You have to beat the game at least once to unlock them. Cats will appear in New Game+ only, so if this is your first play, then just focus on smashing the Sabu Statues]. There is a vending machine in 2nd Floor Hallway A. You’ll find your first Sabu Statue in the Chemistry Class. There is a box containing a curry in 2nd Floor Hallway B. You’ll encounter Cheerleaders in the 1st Floor Hallway A. Their dash attack can be blocked, counterattacked or dodged. They’re not as much of a threat as the Students, but do watch out if they jump in the air - they can perform a dive attack that can go over your punches and hit you. The dive attack must be evaded. In the Gym Swimming Pool, you’ll encounter the Delinquents. There’s also another Sabu Statue. If a Delinquent runs at you, either hit him or guard. Blocking is safer, but go ahead and punch him out of his dash if you think you can get away with it. He’ll do a rolling sobat at the end of his charge. If you need health, there is another box with a curry inside in the Basketball Court. There’s another vending machine in the Cafeteria. In the next room is our first boss. ******************************************************************************** BOSS: Misuzu You might remember her as the Level 3 boss if you ever played the original Kunio-Kun game. If you’ve only played Renegade, then Misuzu is basically Kim, the big woman you fought at the end of Level 3. Pummel her with a Y, Y, Y, X combo, then back away. You can attempt another X attack while she’s down, but don’t try another Y, Y, Y, X combo. She’ll pound the ground around her as she gets up, hurting you if you don’t back away. When she jumps up in the air, avoid the shadow she leaves. Jump over her shoulder charges. When you defeat her, you’ll get a School Key. This key will allow you to enter those rooms you couldn’t earlier. ******************************************************************************** Side Quest Note: anything you need to get will show up on your map as an exclamation point, so there should be no point for me to tell you where everything is. Just look at your map. Go to the first locked room above the Cafeteria, the School Kitchen, to meet with the Chef. You’ll need three items (Beans, Ghost Pepper, Tomatoes) to get past blocked door. You’ll find the Beans in the Locker Room, which is above the Swimming Pool. The Ghost Pepper is in the Restroom, which is above the 3rd Floor Hallway. To the left of the 3rd Floor Hallway is an elevator to the Rooftop, where you’ll find the Tomatoes. Return to the Kitchen, where the Meat Locker is now unblocked. There you’ll find a box containing Pepper Spray. The Pepper Spray will increase reward amounts from Godai missions. ———————————————— Crosstown ———————————————— Main Walkthrough Look for a Sabu Statue on the west end of the School Entrance. [You’ll find your first Cat in North Ravine Lane, around Godai’s dumpster.] In Winding Way are your first two stores and Jimmy Lee’s Dojo, where you can learn new attacks. There’s a Sabu Statue on the roof of the Dojo. You can get to it from the dumpster. In the general mall area, you will encounter two new enemies: the Wrestler and the Policeman. The Wrestlers aren’t too bad, but the Policemen can be a pain. After getting the burger to Godai, go back to the Mall Entrance. Talk to Hiroshi. He’ll mention a security guard who lives in North Ravine Lane. To go to Security Guard Pattinson’s house in North Ravine Lane. After a mandatory fight, the door will unlock. Getting the Keys from the Guard shouldn’t too hard to figure out. Just don’t step on the toys on the floor. There’s a Sabu Statue hidden behind a crate in the Back Alleyway. After exiting through the Back Alleyway, go back to the Mall Entrance. There’s another Sabu Statue [as well as another Cat] in the Mall Lobby. You’ll find Hiroshi again in the Food Court. Talk to him to unlock the way to the construction site. [There’s a Cat on one of the sculpture pillars in the Mall Exit.] There’s a Sabu Statue at the Construction Site. You’ll encounter the next boss on the rooftop of the Construction Building. ******************************************************************************** BOSS: Yamada Remember Slick/Simon from River City Ransom? Yep, this is him. What I did was do the old combo with a heavy finisher on him while dodging his psychic attacks. Try knocking him off the building for extra damage. A third of the way, he’ll start telekinetically summoning debris to attack you. Occasionally, there might be a piece of food along the debris. Grab the food if you need to heal. When he’s down to a third of his health, he’ll create ground sparks. After Yamada is defeated, you will now be able to go to the Uptown area. ******************************************************************************** Side Quests You’ll run into Godai (a.k.a. Tex from River City Ransom) in North Ravine Lane. He’ll give you a quest where you need to get him a Double Merv Burger. Merv’s Burgers is at the east end of the Mall Entrance. Buy the Double Merv Burger (but don’t eat it!) and then return to Godai. ———————————————— Uptown ———————————————— Main Walkthrough Uptown is where you will have your first encounter with Linda. Her whip lets her hit you from afar, so close the distance between you and her. You’ll run into Godai again at the Shopping Entrance. [There is a Cat near him.] In the Video Game District you’ll run into Yoko who will suggest you talk to Hibari. [In the same area there are two Cats - one behind the trash, another on a fence.] You’ll find a Sabu Statue in the Coin-Op Arcade [as well as another Cat]. You’ll find a Sabu Statue that requires a wall jump to get at [as well as yet another Cat] in the Toy District. In the Fashion District is the Hibari building. There is a Sabu Statue to the immediate right of it. But before we go into the Hibari building, go to the far right and you’ll find the gold statue Godai told you about. After destroying the Gold Statue, go into the Hibari building. In the Sewing Room there is a Sabu Statue on the right side of the room [and a Cat on the left]. After the forced encounter in the Sewing Room, leave the building and talk to Hasebe and Mimi. The path to the Pawn Shop in the Toy District will now be open. Go there. Buy the Fake Gold Cat at the Pawn Shop. Also, don’t forget to smash the Sabu Statue on the lower left corner. Exiting the Pawn Shop, you’ll find that the Elevator is working again. Use it to skip all those floors. ******************************************************************************** BOSS: Hibari An original character not based on previous Kunio-Kun/Double Dragon baddies. When she creates of clones of Female Students, take the both of them out immediately. Otherwise, they’ll make attacking Hibari difficult. Luckily, they go down after one combo. Midway through the fight, she’ll create lines that go across the screen. DON’T cross those lines, or you will take a TON of damage. You can damage Hibari only one of two ways: One, when she creates a sword projectile. Go to a wall, wait for the sword to come down, then jump over it. The sword should then bounce off the wall and hit the caster. When hit with her own sword, Hibari will be stunned and grounded. While she’s down, hit her with a few combos. I especially like using Kyoto’s Dragon Feet for this one. This is the main way you are going to damage this boss. Two, you can also hit Hibari with a jump attack when she occasionally stops in the center of the screen. Don’t expect this to happen often, though. After beating Hibari, the path to Downtown is opened. The Secret Passageway is where you will run into your first Cyborgs. They kind of look like Rowper from Double Dragon, don’t they? Don’t forget the Sabu Statue [and Cat]. ******************************************************************************** Side Quests Godai at the Shopping Entrance will ask you to destroy a golden statue. You’ll find the statue at the far right end of the Fashion District, where you will find the Hibari building. ———————————————— Downtown ———————————————— Main Walkthrough You’ll have your first encounter with the Sledgehammer Punk in the City Streets section of Downtown. You might remember him as the third boss in the old Technos beat-em-up Combatribes. In the Shantytown, you’ll run into Godai. Also, look for a Sabu Statue. There’s a Sabu Statue on top of the right fence in Downtown Park. It’s partially hidden. Get onto the dumpster to get to it. [There’s a Cat on the fence in the Basketball Court.] The Transit Station has a Sabu Statue [and Cat]. The Junkyard has a Sabu Statue on the lower right part of the area [and a Cat in the trash compactor area]. You’ll run into Naritaka in the Rear City Streets, who will tell you to go to the Subway Terminal. Look for a Sabu Statue above the Legal Drugs. [Above the Pay Lots is a Cat sitting on an air conditioning unit.] In the Back Alley, you’ll find another Sabu Statue atop a dumpster [and a Cat sitting on a ledge]. You’ll find the Subway Terminal in Skid Row, but the path is blocked. Go back to the Junkyard. You’ll run into the Crane Operator, who wants you to go down and get the keys from the trash compactor. You’ll have to kill zombies while the compactor closes in on you. Kill enough zombies and you’ll find keys. Go back to the Crane Operator and he’ll remove the trash from the subway terminal. In the Subway Terminal, don’t drop down in the lower right area until you are ready to fight the boss. ******************************************************************************** BOSS: Adobo A classic Double Dragon enemy is the boss of the Downtown stage. Do not do a full combo on Adobo. He’ll block the last hits and counter hit you with a headbutt. Hit and run with this guy. A third of the way, he’ll try to pound the floor. Jump up to avoid damage. At this point, he will from time to time try to throw concrete slabs at you. When he lifts one, walk up to him and punch him. This will destroy the slab he intends to throw at you. You can also pick up the slabs and throw them at Adobo yourself. After defeating Adobo, head back to the Transit Station. A new path will be cleared. There is a secret shop in the Tunnel. Look for a gray door near one of the pillars. Go up to it and hit the punch button to enter Merlin’s Mystery shop. Go right to enter Ocean Heights. ******************************************************************************** Side Quests In the Shantytown, Godai will ask you to smash four cars. The locations of the cars will show up on your map. ———————————————— Ocean Heights ———————————————— Main Walkthrough You’ll first encounter the Gamblers here in Ocean Heights. They will be the first to have a long-range projectile attack, which makes them particularly annoying/dangerous. From the top long table of the Chic Buffet outside dinning area, jump onto the ledge above the door and below the Chic Buffet sign. From there, jump onto the long ledge above the tables. [Along the way there is a Cat.] Go along the top of the buildings until you find a Sabu Statue. Billy Lee’s Dojo is also here if there are moves you haven’t learned yet. Just keep in mind that you won’t learn anything new in Billy’s Dojo. Godai is at the far right of the Beach Storefronts area. Look for a Sabu Statue on the lower left corner of The Beach. [There is also a Cat atop one of the rock formations.] Talk to Burnov (yep, THAT Burnov!) at The Pier. He won’t let you see Noize without a pass. [There’s another Cat in the Fish Market. There’s also another Cat in Ocean Heights Park, perched atop the left wall.] There are a couple of vending machines in the Theme Park if you need them. [There’s yet another Cat in the Aquarium.] In the Fancy Hotel Lobby, talk to the Concierge. He’ll send you around collecting information on Noize. There is also a Sabu Statue perched atop one of the trees near the right exit. In order to answer the Concierge’s questions, you’ll need to go to three different areas: 1) The Beach. Look for Mihoko to find out the name of Noize’s dog. 2) The Fish Market, where you’ll find out what Noize’s favorite food is. 3) The Theme Park. There you’ll run into Kaori who will tell you Noize’s hometown. In the Beach Homes area, there is a Statue [and a Cat] above the hotel entrance. After getting the information, go back to the Fancy Hotel Lobby to get the VIP passes from the Concierge. Return to The Pier and show the VIP pass to Burnov. Enter the Private Yacht to fight the next boss. ******************************************************************************** BOSS: Noize Your biggest concern will be the Guitar Hero-like projectiles Noize fires at you from a safe distance. The projectiles don't do much damage, but can be hard to predict. If anyone has figured out if the projectiles do have a specific pattern, please let me know and I'll give you credit in the update of this FAQ. Occasionally she’ll summon fans to attack you. They’re not much of a threat and they go down with one hit. [After defeating Noize, there will be a Cat in The Pier.] In Ocean Heights Park, take the now unlocked path to Sanwakai Tower. ******************************************************************************** Side Quests Godai will ask you to take out a man called One-Hit Tommy. You’ll find him in the Fancy Restroom. As his name says, any hit he lands on you is an automatic one-hit KO. Use hit and run tactics on this guy and try not to get hit. ———————————————— Sanwakai Tower ———————————————— Main Walkthrough At the Tower Entrance you’ll run into Godai again. [There’s a Cat that is accessible from the bus kiosk.] This final area will introduce the Yakuza. Both sexes have a long-range projectile attack, so be careful. The Female uses kunai while the Male uses an Hadoken. Another Sabu Statue is above the elevators in the Floor 8 Lobby. [You’ll find a Cat in the Hotel Room.] The last Sabu Statue is in the Money Laundering Vault. Smash it to receive a Mami Charm. There is a trick to getting past the Floor 21 Lobby without the platforming. Jump onto the concrete pillar and then climb the vines to a platform that will allow you to to bypass the pit. [The last Cat will be in the Genetic Experiments Room. Grab it to get a Cat Pin.] Approach the Yakuza in the Floor 50 to be sent on another fetch quest: find four packets of explosives. The first pack will be in the Weapons Room. The second will be in the Genetic Experiments Room. The third is in the Money Laundering Vault. The last one is in the Casino. After getting the explosives, go back to the Floor 50 Lobby and use them to open up the way to the final boss. ******************************************************************************** BOSS: Sabuko Sabuko is the daughter of Sabu, who was the final boss of the first Kunio-Kun game (otherwise known as Renegade in the U.S., where he was renamed Lucas). She actually has four sections of health instead of three. The best way to damage her is to jab her twice, then finish with a heavy attack. No full combos, she will block the last few strikes and counterattack. Every time a section of health is lost, Sabuko will pull a Damnd - jumping away to where you can’t hit her, summoning a couple of Yakuza, then pouncing on you after some time has passed. In the second to last section, she will create clones of herself. In her last section, she will create fireballs. She can also do a technique where she thrusts her sword into the ground, creating a shockwave; jump over it. [Beating Sabuko in New Game+ will reward you with the Hasbe Charm.] Congratulations, you beat River City Girls. ******************************************************************************** [Secret Boss If you enter the Penthouse wearing both the Hasebe Charm and Mami Charm, you will fight Hasebe and Mami instead of Sabuko. BOSS: Hasbe and Mami You might remember these two from River City Ransom: Mami is Cyndi (who you had to rescue) and Hasebe is Roxy (who helped you find Mami/Cyndi). Don’t full combo them. They’ll block the last couple of hits, then counter. A third of the way, they’ll do a dual-spin attack. Dodge it and wait for them to stop. While they’re dizzied, knock them both down. After the 2nd piece of health is depleted, the girls will do a balancing ball attack. Go to one of the lower corners and jump when they approach. They won’t hit you. Once their third piece of lifebar is exhausted, The girl you knocked out will go out of body and the boss will gain a fourth section of life, just like with Sabuko. At this point, the other girl will not take any damage from attacks. In order to progress, you’ll have to hit (by jump kicks) the spirit of the girl you KO’d. Congratulations, you beat River City Girls, again.] ******************************************************************************** Side Quests Godai will ask you to beat up five specific red yakuza. They will show up on your map. —————————————— Contact Me —————————————— If you have any questions or if you have something you want to add or correct, my email is dwsnjms@yahoo.com. —————————————— Credits —————————————— Thanks for GameFaqs for allowing me to put this up.
