You can start a character here, import one after you finish Baldur's Gate, or after you finish Siege of Dragonspear. If you import a game with any game NPC's they will not appear. If you want to import your main character from Baldur's Gate or Siege of Dragonspear, it's best to export the character, then import into a new Black Pits game. You will lose all items when you do, however, so be prepared. I also advise you *not* to try playing this solo, since this is a dungeon crawl/ hack-and-slash setting that gets very difficult near the end of the game, and there are no NPCs you can get to join your party. One more item of note, no enemies will drop any items when they die so you must purchase all items and upgrades to equipment, and experience and gold is given after the combat is won and is divided between the survivors. ==================== WALKTHROUGH: Tier 0, Battle 1 The Four Column Pit (OH9310) - Three tavern patrons appear in an arena, followed by three tasloi who attack them. You appear in the arena and are attacked by the tasloi after they quickly finish the tavern patrons. - You have nothing but your wits, and a weapon you may or may not be skilled with, and a few more weapons on the arena floor, to defend yourself. - Use the short bow, and the twenty arrows, carefully. The tasloi aren’t particularly tough, but if you’re first level melee combat can be quite hazardous. Mass attack one at a time to take them out quickly. - Once the tasloi are killed a djinn will appear and take you to your new quarters. Slave Quarters (OH9360) - When you arrive, you are rested and healed. Your new drow “master,” Baeloth the Entertainer, has a few words for you about your current enslaved condition. He then turns you over to Najim, his enslaved djinn servant. - Demand some answers from Najim and he explains the Pits. Suggest that together you could rise up against Baeloth and he explains he can’t since he is under a geas. He then gives you 2500gp (but no experience from the battle). - Talk to the merchants around you, check their wares and buy what you need. Clockwise from the left side, they are: - Devlin Tarador, elf: ranged weapons - Magda, duergar: melee weapons - Thardak, duergar: more melee weapons including some “exotics” - Dinguer the Mad, duergar: scrolls of protection, spell scrolls - Bellowgulp Bluefingers, gnome: potions - Xithiss, illithid: rings, wands and amulets - Elan Garaq, rakshassa: boots, cloaks and girdles - Gorch the Armorer, duergar: heavy armor - Brendak, duergar: light armor - With the exception of the rakshassa all are slaves to Baeloth. And there seems to be a conflict between Magda and Brendak. - Leave the “marketplace” through the south and follow the passage up passed two empty cells to a room with the beholder Ghlouralk. - Talk to him peaceably and get what information you can. He can be of help, since he knows what strategy your next battle in the arena will require. - Once equipped and rested, go to the north exit from the “marketplace” and talk to Baeloth to go to your next fight. - Baeloth will advance you to more difficult battles. The combats listed below show the most direct route to direct combat with Baeloth and reflect that advancement. - He will give you the option for a lesser tier combat as you progress to the next tier. - The routine gets repetitious: rest, level up, combat, rest, level up, combat... Unless there’s a change, only the arena information will be given. Tier 0, Battle 2 The Four Column Pit (OH9310) - Simple and straight forward, dispatch seven diseased gibberlings (2500xp quest, 500gp). Tier 0, Battle 3 The Three Column Pit (OH9350) - Deal with seven more gibberlings, healthy so tougher this time (2500xp quest, 500gp). Slave Quarters (OH9360) - As before, rest, resupply, and level up if possible and when ready talk to Baeloth. - This time you will find a party of adventurers in the first cell. Tier 1, Battle 1: Plan B Team The Four Column Pit (OH9310) - Not so simple this time, you have to survive a party of six adventurers, Bort (gnoll barbarian), Apple (human totemic druid), Fargus (elf cleric), Reginald (human fighter), Tim (halfling assassin), and Erasmus (half elf mage) (7300xp, 1750gp) (repeat combat: 7300xp, 875gp). Tier 1, Battle 2: Bad Hobs and Boomsticks The Four Column Pit (OH9310) - This time you have to survive a large group eight hobgoblins, with archers and spellcasters (9125xp, 2000gp) (repeat combat: 9125xp, 1000gp). Tier 1, Battle 3: How to Raise the Dead and Influence People The Three Column Pit (OH9350) - You have to deal with a necromancer and his skeleton army. Ignore the skeletons and take the mage out. The skeletons will collapse without their master (12167xp, 2250gp) (repeat combat: 12167xp, 1125gp). Tier 1, Battle 4: Gauntlet of Ogres The Four Column Pit (OH9310) - Baeloth introduces you to his audience, then teleports out before teleporting in six ogres and an ogre mage. This time area effect spells and ranged weapons on the ogre magi first are your best choice (18250xp, 2500gp) (repeat combat: 18250xp, 1250gp). Tier 1, Battle 5: The Margarine of Evil The Three Column Pit (OH9350) - Remember that group of adventurers in the cell? Owyn (gnome cleric 7), Krancor the Old (male berserker 7), Ciril (halfling thief 8), Wylliam Brand (human mage 7), SamJohn BrightWalker (elf assassin 8), and Carlos Nuez (dwarf fighter 7) are your new challenge (18250xp, 3000gp) (repeat combat: 18250xp, 1500gp). Slave Quarters (OH9360) - Baeloth is pleased at your survival, but won’t let you go. He does, however, give you a reward. - Najim appears to give you your reward. Again, if asked he’ll say he can’t help you (21693xp, 20000gp). - Talk to the merchants and find they have a new regard for you, and begin to hope. Except for the rakshassa. His hatred is even more pronounced. In all cases, check their stores for new inventory, including +1 weapons and armor. - The first cell is empty, but a new group of adventurers are in the second. Tier 2, Battle 6: Bugged The Three Column Pit (OH9350) - The new challenge this time - five rabid ankhegs (26032xp, 4000gp) (repeat combat: 26032xp, 2000gp). Tier 2, Battle 7: Unfriendly Neighborhood Spider Man The Three Column Pit (OH9350) - You have to deal with a druid, with two giant spiders and ten spiders (32540xp, 4500gp) (repeat combat: 32540xp, 2250gp). Tier 2, Battle 8: Thicket of Thieves The Three Column Pit (OH9350) - You are challenged with six vampire thieves with ranged weapons, with two shadows mixed in for good measure. And just to make things more interesting the floor is laced with traps and their arrows do severe acid damage (44386xp, 5000gp) (repeat combat: 44386xp, 2500gp). - Baeloth begins to show his anger toward you when you survive this battle. Tier 2, Battle 9: Gift of the Ogre Mage The Four Column Pit (OH9310) - You will be faced with an ogre mage, but the real threat are the five clouds around the arena, portals that keep summoning enemies, including level draining wraiths (65079xp, 5500gp) (repeat combat: 65079xp, 2750gp). Tier 2, Battle 10: Red Shirt Wizards The Three Column Pit (OH9350) - You are now faced with the party from the second cell, Red Tom (halfling thief 8), Lucius (elf cleric 8), Lucille (human blackguard 8), Voadikka (half orc barbarian 8), Treacle (human mage 9), and Thespia (human conjurer 8), all with enchanted weapons and armor. Once defeated Baeloth reveals his anger at your success (repeat combat: 130896xp, 3000gp). Slave Quarters (OH9360) - Baeloth reveals he is angered because you are upstaging him, and that he plans on eliminating you. He does, however, give you a reward. - Najim appears to give you your reward. He has also added something extra (130896xp, 40000gp). - Talk to the merchants again. They have new information about Baeloth and how many challenges you must overcome to confront him in the arena. - You can resolve the issue between Brendak and Magda. You can also discover the duergar traitor that allowed Baeloth to defeat them - Thardak. - In all cases, check their stores for new inventory, including +2 weapons and armor. - The first cell is occupied again, this time with a fire giant. Tier 3, Battle 11: Swamped The Three Column Pit (OH9350) - You now have to deal with two trolls (needing fire or acid damage when they’re down to kill) and two fission slimes (you need fire to destroy these or they split when “killed”) (152712xp, 8000gp) (repeat combat: 152712xp, 4000gp). Tier 3, Battle 12: A History of Violent Beatings The Four Column Pit (OH9310) - Five clay golems (blunt weapons are needed to destroy these) and a shambling mound are your new enemies. Baeloth begins to suspect someone is giving you key information about these battles... (183254xp, 10000gp) (repeat combat: 183254xp, 5000gp). Tier 3, Battle 13: Ice to See You The Three Column Pit (OH9350) - Frost salamanders are up next, one a cleric, and there is a constant firing of ice storms into the arena (229068xp, 12000gp) (repeat combat: 229068xp, 6000gp). Tier 3, Battle 14: Catching Fire The Four Column Pit (OH9310) - Baeloth is beginning to worry. This time he sends the fire giant from the cell with support from five fire elementals (which explode in a fireball when they die) (305423xp, 7000gp) (repeat combat: 305423xp, 7000gp). Slave Quarters (OH9360) - Baeloth is silent now. Talk to the merchants again. - They let you know the next battle will be with Baeloth, but he won’t be alone. - Both the rakshassa and the beholder Ghlouralk declare their intent to kill you in the next battle. - Make what preparations you can before talking to Baeloth. You can do any of the previous battles, but once you ask for the next challenge everything changes. He immediately challenges you, and Thardak joins him before being teleported to the arena for the last battle. The Final Battle The Four Column Pit (OH9310) - This is against Baeloth, the rakshassa Elan Garaq, and Thardak the betrayer. - Thardak is easy to deal with. Elan Garaq is tougher since he casts magic, has high magic resistance and is a skilled fighter. - Once Thardak and Garaq are dispatched, and he starts getting hurt, Baeloth gates in Ghlouralk. The beholder’s most powerful attacks are short range so keep distance and hit him with ranged weapons. - Baeloth can also bring in two flesh golems at various times. He’s a powerful mage so taking him out won’t be easy. - Once Baeloth is defeated, he falls but won’t die until all other enemies are slain, including any golems he may have gated in. - Once Baeloth dies (34464gp), Najim appears with five of the merchants, and offers to send you back to the surface. The merchants, Brendak, Magda, Xithiss, Devlin and Bellowgulp each thank you before the non-duergar are gated away. Then Najim tells you to leave. Talk to him and chose to leave. This ends the Black Pits. ==================== STORES: Notes: A) At specific points during this mini-game, the stores will add inventory. Anything previously purchased is replaced, except for Dinguer whose inventory doesn’t change, and the Girdle of Hill Giant Strength from Elan Garaq. Prices don't change, either, since your reputation won't change. B) The number in (parenthesis) shows the initial quantity of that item, no number indicates infinite quantities exist. C) Items with charges (indicated by bracketed numbers, i.e. [5/5]) bought from Xithiss can be fully charged by selling them back, then buying them again (for a much higher price, of course). D) Prices are based on the person talking being of lawful good alignment (12 reputation) with an 18 charisma.
