He attacks with the Vampire Killer whip, and uses many of the classic CV subweapons. Jon starts out fairly weak, and generally takes the longest out of all characters to become powerful. Maxing out Jon will take a lot of time/dedication, but when maxed he can do very well. He can be very fun to play if you enjoy using many different moves and weapons to best clear a level. Quick Guide ( QKG1 ) -I would advise new players to NOT play Jonathan as your first character, especially solo. Without decent equipment and low level subweapons, it will be a very slow process. List of Skill and Subweapon Drops: *these may appear in more chest locations than specified, but are confirmed *where listed. Its very inefficient. You can buy the Master Ring for 200,000 at the shop, and it can be worn by Jon and Shanoa. Having 2 rings equipped can further increase your leveling speed. -Subweapons can be collected up to a max of 9, but they level only based on use. Having multiple copies only allows you to equip the same weapon multiple times on different directions + B (which can be useful- see leveling section). -If you want to level Jon quickly, collect most or all of his subs and move directly to Survival Mode grinding. To do this you need to be in a multiplayer Survival Mode game, either with a friend willing to help, or a public game. Because the game is a bit older now you will probably want to pick your favorite board and post looking for a grinding partner. -If you want a Jon that is effective, but do not care if he is at max level, collect all subweapons and use Survival Mode to grind each weapon to 6-8. 6 can be reached easily, and 8 can be reached fairly quickly. The last level will take much longer for all weapons. -Subweapons take MP to use, and they become stronger based on your INT stat (not ATK or STR). If you use subweapons more than the whip, INT (more damage) is important. Equiping a Sage Ring or Chaos ring will also greatly increase your MP regen rate. -Subweapons gain experience on hit, not on kill. Attacks that show as blocked or guarded also DO gain experience. Skills ( SKL1 ) Main Attack Jonathan has only one weapon on his main attack button- the Vampire Killer whip. He starts with this weapon and it can never be removed or replaced. The strength of his whip will increase with subweapon levels. It starts off quite low, but maxes out at a respectable level. Jonathan cannot move if his whip attack is done standing. If done in mid-air, Jon can move left/right until he touches the ground, where he will stop moving until the whip animation finishes. While in mid air, if you hold down when you press the attack button, Jon will whip in a ~45 degree angle downward. If you press and hold the attack button, Jon will whip, then hold out his arm and the whip will hang downward. You can then press directions on the dpad to swing the whip around for small damage. Martial Arts Jon's secondary attack button and personal action button are used in his Martial Arts. There are 5 different martial arts, which will be detailed here. Block You start the game with this, and it is the only use for Jon's personal action (RB) button. When you hold down the button, He will block with his arms up. It generally halves any incoming damage and negates push/fallback on weaker attacks. I did not use it much, and once you are familiar with the game most attacks can be dodged rather than blocked. When blocking you cannot walk. You can activate your block in midair and continue to move, but will stand still when you touch the ground. Blocking takes no magic to activate or maintain. Forward Roll Motion: F DF D DB B F + Y This Martial Art moves Jon forward about 5 character lengths, and makes him invincible throughout. Useful for moving through some traps or slow enemies. It can only be done on the ground. At the end of the roll, Jon sits still for a half second or so, and becomes vulnerable again. You will be hit if touching something when the roll ends. Forward Roll takes 10 MP to activate. Danger Knee Motion: B D F + Y Jon lunges forward knee first, about 5 character lengths. If he touches an enemy, he will hit for good damage (roughly 2x whip?) and bounce backward ~3 character lengths. If he doesn't hit anything, he just moves forward and lands. It can only be done on the ground. It is invincible to 'projectiles' throughout the move, until Jon lands on the ground again, so can be used to avoid some attacks. You are able to cancel Jon's whip animation with a Danger Knee to avoid the whip downtime/maximize damage. Danger Knee takes 5 mp to activate. Sonic Strike Motion: U B D F + Y When you perform this Martial Art, Jon will do a stand still 'powering up' for about half a second, then he dashes forward, disappearing and appearing again about 5 character lengths in front of where he started. He damages any enemies that he passes through during the dash. Can only be started on the ground. There is a 'secret' move that Jon can do that has been dubbed the Sonic Jump. If you do a Sonic Dash while close to a ledge, Jon will dash off of it. Once he hits the edge, he'll appear but will have an incredible amount of forward momentum. By double jumping during this, Jon can traverse large gaps, such as the water pit in Level 1. During a Sonic Jump, even if you hit the edge of a platform so it appears Jon will not make the jump, the game will teleport him on top of it. Jon is vulnerable to hits when he reappears from the dash. If you dash through a large enemy but do not kill it so you appear inside the enemy sprite you will take damage. I cannot comment much on the damage and usefulness of this move as an attack, as I did not like it or use it too much. If anyone has any neat/useful tips or tricks with this, feel free to contact me for an addition. Sonic Strike takes 5mp to perform. Uppercut Motion: D U + Y Jon does a jumping flaming uppercut. He hits anything that is about 1 character length in front of him and up, about as high as 1 regular jump. Good damage (3x whip?) on large stationary enemies, and sometimes useful for killing small enemies above you. Jon is NOT invincible during this move. You can only Uppercut on the ground. After the uppercut ends, you're able to direct Jon's fall left/right, and also attack on the way down. As mentioned, Jon has no invincibility during this move. It's possible to miss an enemy above you and have them hit your head on the way up if you are facing the wrong direction. If you uppercut a stronger enemy that you do not kill, and your body moves into its sprite you will take damage. Uppercut takes 5mp to perform. Subweapons ( SBW1 ) I will give a short description of each weapon here, but won't go into specifics. There are probably lots of good uses for all weapons, so it would be futile to try and list them all. Personally, my standard subweapon choices are: U+B - Cross B - Wrecking Ball F+B - Shuriken D+B - Bible Knife | Start with this equipped, cannot obtain more Throws subweapon straight forward for small damage. It can travel across the entire stage, stopping only when it hits an enemy or wall. When it upgrades, each knife does separate damage effectively doubling/tripling the hits it does. Level 5- Jon throws 2 knives. Level 9- Jon throws 3 knives. Axe | Drop from Axe Knight Throws an axe at an arc up forward that then curves and falls down. It can be hit out of the air/hit a ceiling and stop. It normally passes through enemies and can do multiple hits, but can be blocked. Level 5- the Axe becomes larger. Level 9- the Axe becomes even larger. Paper Airplane | Drop from Fleaman Throws a paper airplane that does a small loop, then flys forward and down, eventually hitting the ground. Does small damage. Level 5- the paper airplane has a tiny blue or pink person riding it Level 9- the paper airplace has both a blue and pink person riding it Boomerang | Ch 2 Purple chests, drop from GurkhaMaster When thrown the boomerang curves forward and slightly down, then curves back up and around returning to a bit above where it was thrown. It can go through enemies and hit multiple times, but will stop if it hits an object/wall. Level 5- Boomerang becomes larger. Level 9- Boomerang becomes even larger, and is orange. Bible | Ch 2 Purple and Boss chest When used, Jon makes a Bible appear in front of him, which then spirals outward in a widening area, eventually disappearing after around 5 seconds. The Bible will never disappear early, making it the only subweapon Jon has that can go through walls. It can hit multiple times but due to the spiral pattern it is hard to reliably get many hits with it. Level 5- No noticable change.. slightly larger? Level 9- Bible becomes large and more square as opposed to the beginning small rectangular graphic. As I like to call it, St. James Edition =) Grenade | Ch 1 and 2 Green and Blue chests, drop from Creature Jon lobs a grenade forward and down. It will bounce off any surface and explode after about 2 seconds in a small updward flame. It goes through any enemy until it explodes (does not explode on contact). The flame stays on screen for a second, and can hit up to 3 times on a stationary enemy. Level 5- The grenade explosion becomes taller. Level 9- The grenade graphic changes to an anti-tank grenade (think Metal Slug, if you've played it) and the explosion is even taller. Ricochet Rock | Drop from Lerjali This tiny projectile is thrown at a forward-down angle, and it bounces against any surface hitting enemies until it disappears. It travels through enemies but disappears if blocked. Level 5- Length of time increased? Level 9- Length of time increased? Wrecking Ball | Ch 3 Purple chests When used, Jon stands completely still and swings a large circular ball around his head. The ball goes in an eliptical pattern, hitting forward and above Jon all the way to behind and slightly below him. Because of this it can sometimes be better to turn around before attacking with the Wrecking Ball. If the B button is held down, Jon can stand and swing the wrecking ball indefinitely for no additional MP cost, and will regen MP during this time. He will stop swinging if he takes any damage. This is the only subweapon that Jon can NOT use while jumping. Level 5- No change? Level 9- Wrecking Ball becomes large and has spikes on its graphic. Kunai | Ch 4 Purple chests Jon will throw kunais (small daggers) outward in a forward fan pattern when this sub is used, going from diagonally up to diagonally down. The kunais will stop if they hit anything, so you have to be close to hit multiple times on large enemies. It begins with 3 kunais being thrown. Level 5- 4 kunais are thrown. Level 9- 5 kunais are thrown. Shiruken | Ch 5 Purple chests The Shuriken is an interesting subweapon. When used, Jon does a throwing motion but you do not see the projectiles until they hit a surface or enemy, then the throwing star graphic will appear and do damage, disappearing a tiny bit later. The travel time is not instantaneous, but is very close. The shurikens travel is a shallow arc forward and down, so its often best to jump before attacking. Its possible for an enemy to walk into the shuriken graphic as it is on the ground and take damage. Level 5- Jon throws 4 shurikens- the graphic is larger when they appear. Level 9- Jon throws 5 shurikens- the graphic is even larger when they appear. Holy Water | Ch 4 or 6 Purple and Boss chests This classic Castlevania weapon is mostly unchanged. When used, a small bottle is thrown down at Jon's feet which breaks into a slow, forward moving pillar of holy fire. The fire hits multiple times and stops at ledges and walls. Level 5- The fire pillar is taller and travels farther? Level 9- The fire pillar is even taller, and travels even farther? Cross | Ch 5 Boss Chest, 6 Purple and Boss chests The Cross is also similar to previous Castlevania games- when thrown it spins traveling straight forward, hangs in midair, then comes straight back. The distance of the throw is fairly long (maybe 3x longer than the whip distance) and the cross can hit multiple times, so spacing the throw so it hangs inside of a large enemy works well. If it touches Jon when it returns, the cross will disappear. If not, it will travel backwards about the same distance as the initial throw then disappear. The Cross can be blocked or hit a wall which will stop it. Level 5- The cross becomes larger. Level 9- The cross becomes quite large. Subweapon Leveling ( SWL1 ) General Subweapons are very important to Jonathan for 2 main reasons. First, it is his main 'leveling' mechanic in the game. For every subweapon level he gains, he gets a little stronger overall. Second, his subweapons give him a lot more attack options, since he cannot equip any other main weapons. The biggest problem is that subweapons take a long time to level up to a decent level, and much longer to level to max. Realistically, you will have to grind out many levels if you aiming to max Jon. It's possible to level by just playing through the game, but it will be very, very slow going. Back Dash Cancelling Back Dash Cancelling (BDC) will speed up your weapon usage greatly for some subweapons (the weapons that do not have the ability to hit multiple times). The weapons that benefit the most from BDCing are: Knife, Paper Airplane, Kunai, Shuriken, and to a limited extent, the Ricochet Rock. BDCing is most useful during Survival Mode grinding, which is described below. With a controller with a turbo option, BDCing is made VERY easy and VERY fast. If you turn on turbo for your backdash button and your subweapon button, you can hold down both of those and down on the dpad (this works only on whatever subweapon you have assigned to Down+B). Multihit Overlap For the multi-hit subweapons: Axe, Boomerang, Bible, Grenade, Holy Water, and Cross, spamming will barely increase your rate of leveling (if at all) because they are programmed with a hit 'cooldown', or time before the same weapon can hit the same enemy again. The cooldown is different for each weapon, (for example, holy water has a fairly short cooldown while the bible has a fairly long cooldown). It is the length of time between the hit 'ping' sound effect. This game, however, will recognize each of your four equipped subweapons as different even if they are the same weapon. For example, Down+B assigned to Bible and Up+B assigned to Bible means that you can have 2 Bibles active, and each of them overlap their hits, ignoring the cooldown for all other copies. This will effectively double your experience for the same amount of time- if the weapon stays active long enough, you could even triple or quadruple your rate of gain by assigning the same weapon to all 4 subweapon slots. Basically, to speed up the leveling of these subweapons, assign multiple copies to as many directions as seem necessary, and alternate using each one. Again, this is best used in Survival Mode grinding, which is explained in detail below. Survival Mode Method Basically, this method is as simple as starting a multiplayer survival match, and choosing Hard Level 1 with 1 Astral Ring and 1 Master Ring equipped on your accessory slots. On this level, all players spawn in the Level 1 boss room with Gergoth. You then attack Gergoth as fast as you can with whatever subweapon you want to level. Because you have an Astral Ring equipped, your subweapon use will use your HP instead of your MP. When you can no longer use your subs because your HP is too low, jump into the boss to die, and instantly respawn with full HP and repeat. There are some basic tips to make this method more effective, and then there are some more advanced tips you want to really be efficient. -Your first accessory has to be an Astral Ring. When you die/respawn in survival mode, your MP does not refill. -You want your second Accessory slot to be a Master Ring- this should be required, really. -Use the Back Dash Cancelling and Mutihit Overlap methods, which are described above. Originally both of these explanations were within the tips here, but they are so important that I felt they should be highlighted separately. -Your subweapons hit harder based on your INT stat, so you should remove all equipment that raises INT, or even wear items that lower your INT. You can also throw more subs per death if you have more HP, so wearing things that raise your HP also helps. An example would be Shogun Helm, Paludamentum, Heavy Armor, Winged Boots. -The game will not save your progress if you ever choose to Quit from the menu. Do not quit yourself. -As you level up your weapons, you'll eventually (quickly) become strong enough to actually kill Gergoth before the 3 minute time limit is up. This is a bad thing, because the game does not save until the match officially ends, and you have to stand around waiting. To reduce downtime, consider mixing a weaker hitting weapon with a strong/fast hitting weapon. Ideally, you want to get Gergoth to 0 HP as close to the 3 minute mark as possible. Too fast and you stand around, and too slow and you are wasting 'valuable' HP. -If you have a reasonable, patient, trustworthy leveling partner, you can use this trick: Have one player only spam their attacks, and kill Gergoth as fast as possible. If done with over 1 minute remaining on the clock, have the person who did NOT attack QUIT the game. They will gain nothing because quitting does not cause the game to save. However, the other player WILL get to save. The player who quits will need to: Start a new survivial game, invite the other person (probably using the 'invite xbox party' option) wait for the player to join, form the team, Change the difficulty to hard, then start the match. This is a lot of work, but is faster if both players are efficient and dedicated. This method is not for people with short attention spans. -If possible aim your attacks so you hit both Gergoth's leg armor and his upper half. If you only hit his legs, you'll eventually break the armor and kill him quickly from that point. If you hit only his upper half, you're wasting a lot of 1/2 damage possibilities. One easy example for this is to mix your holy water leveling (basically legs only) with jumping cross attacks (basically upper half only) -Specifically for the Ricochet Rock: only use this during the first phase of the Gergoth fight, before he breaks through the ground. Switch to a different sub for the bottom half of the fight- your overall gain will be faster. -I don't recommend this method for the Wrecking Ball, there are a few better tips in the Other section below. Chapter 3 Boss Method Because the chapter 3 boss takes only 1 damage for all hits that are not on a weak area, and he is such a big target, its possible to level subweapons by attacking him. In general, this method is not as efficient as survival mode, though it can be done solo. If doing this, then you will definitely be limited by your MP, or your HP if using an Astral Ring. If you have a friend who is willing to healbot with Charlotte, you can use the Astral Ring and output attacks at a decent speed. One trick I found personally is to level the Axe from the ledge on the top left ledge, far above Menace. During many of his attacks, you can throw an Axe which will pass through the platform you are standing on, and hit him multiple times. This works fairly well combined with using multiple Axe equips. Other Tips The only other 2 tips I have involve the Wrecking Ball at this time, so perhaps this section should be renamed. If you are a very low power Jonathan with a Level 1 Wrecking Ball, there is a trick which will allow you to get a ton of experience quickly. If you start Level 1 Hard with the Wrecking Ball on Neutral B you can position yourself so your Wrecking Ball hits the constantly spawning zombies near where they go back into the ground. You will never need to move, and as long as you do not kill the zombies, you can rubber band your B button and rack up a ton of hits. If you do this for the entire 30 minutes with 2 Master Rings equipped, you can gain most if not all of your needed Wrecking Ball experience. If you need to level your Wrecking Ball without the above method (you are too strong and kill the zombies) the method I used is to attack the Final Guards on Chapter 6 Hard. Solo, you are able to use the Forward Roll to get behind each Final Guard. From there, you can attack using the wrecking ball and hit ~20 times before you need to double jump his attack. Each Final Guard on Hard has 90 HP, so you can get 90x3 hits per run through if doing this solo. When you reach Dracula, you can also use the Wrecking Ball on his 2nd and 3rd forms (guard hits from his hands count) to level quickly. If you have a friend to play with, or don't mind leeching in public games, its also possible to stand on the stairs below the second Final Guard in the level (the first 'required' guard) and hit him through the floor with the Wrecking Ball, given that the guard is already activated. Level / Boss Strategies ( LVS1 ) These are some very basic tips for playing through the game with Jonathan. There are probably better tips out there, but this section should give you the basic shortcuts and strategies. Level 1 Sonic jump the water pit Boss: The only way to capitalize on the vulnerable legs would be to use lots of shuriuken attacks- your MP will probably not last though. I found the fastest method was jumping Cross attacks along with jumping whip, ignoring the legs. Wrecking ball is not too effective because the boss moves around too much and requires crouching to dodge some attacks. Level 2 If playing solo with winged boots, you can flip a switch in the double door/double hallway area, then quickly jump back past the rising gate. This lets you more directly reach a switch to open the upper left door to the main 'purple room', where you can sonic jump almost directly to the boss. Boss: If you stand between the boss and iron maiden on either side and face away from the boss, the wrecking ball does very well in hitting the boss and any puppets twice per rotation. If he chooses the right (wrong?) attacks to do, its possible to kill him without ever moving from this position. If he does put a puppet in an iron maiden, it's possible for Jon to avoid the damage with a well timed Forward Roll or Danger Knee. Level 3 With a sonic jump, you can skip the top half of the level by making a jump on the right side that allows you to move toward the boss. Jump from the platform with the Book. The axe can sometimes pass through multiple weak spots on the boss if you get lucky. In general though you will probably want the dagger which can his weak spots from far away when standing on the correct height platforms. Level 4 No good Jon specific shortcuts that I know of. Boss: I have little experience with this boss as Jon. Would love to have some good strategies. You can roll or knee through his Poison and curse attack. Rotating the whip works well for the flying head attack. Level 5 Jon can roll or knee through the fire on the left to reach the purple chest without help. Boss: I really don't have any great tips, as this fight is mostly pattern recognition and accurate dodging. When he does his forward sickle spam, if you get behind him you can get in a long wrecking ball attack for easy damage. If you want to clear a sickle spam, you can use Jon's hold X whip fling. You can roll/knee through Death's red orb and large sickle attacks, but I always dodge them as I do with all other characters. Level 6 With good spacing, you can roll through final guards. Boss: If you jump over Dracula's first form to dodge an attack, you can Uppercut then whip. Wrecking ball works well on second form as he stands still for a good amount of time between dodged attacks. For the third form, wrecking ball can hit twice if positioned correctly while within his hands. To be safe, you can stand just outside his hand on either side, and also hit one head with the wrecking ball. Level 7 No shortcuts that I know of. Boss: definitely learn the tells for the charm attack, and knee through it. Between every attack, you can whip/knee, then dodge, or try to get over Asarte and uppercut/whip, but beware of her Delta Spark (green triangles) attack which may move her backwards into you. The Wrecking Ball also does good damage if you can get into a good position quickly enough. If she ever charms anyone (other than you) get in and do as much damage as possible. She will stand still for a good amount of time while she laughs and tells the charmed player(s) to attack, so you may be able to kill her before she begins attacking again. Items ( ITM1 ) I will list what I think are Jonathan's best items. I generally use the first in each group; for accessories I usually wear 2 Megingiords, or 1 Megingiord and 1 Chaos Ring. Helm: Simon's Bandana (for attack/stats), Royal Crown (DLC only, for INT builds) Armor: Death's Robe (for stats/INT builds), Berserker Mail (for damage), Simon's Plate (for HP/stats) Legs: Winged Boots* (obviously for speed), Simon's Sandals (stats) Accessories: Master Ring (for subweapon leveling), Megingiord (For attack), Sunstone/Moonstone (general stats), Sage/Chaos Ring (MP regen), Red Scarf (for INT builds) *As an aside, I think the Winged Boots are the absolute best item in the game. *Being able to move quickly changes how you play the game (you can avoid *attacks/enemies much easier) and makes all levels much faster. I am a fan of *efficiency. I always have them on for all characters and do not think anything *is worth removing them. Jonathan-Only Drops For item collectors/completionists, here is a list of drops that ONLY Jonathan can aquire. I'm fairly certain of this information but if you think there is an error feel free to email me. The location listed is where I found the items- for the chest drops they are often found in more places. This list is sorted by slot then alphabetical order. Simon's Bandana | Ch 6 H Purple/Boss Breastplate | Ch 6 N Purple/Boss Brilliant Mail | Ch 2 H Purple/Boss Chain Mail | Shop Curiass | Ch 3 H Purple Hauberk | Ch 3 H Purple Kung Fu Suit | Ch 3 H Green, Ch 2 Purple/Boss Lorica | Ch 5 H Purple, Ch 6 H Boss Scale Mail | Ch 3 N Green/Blue Simon's Plate | Ch 6 H Boss ONLY Spiked Mail | Ch 1 H Boss ONLY Simon's Sandals | Ch 6 H Purple/Boss Staurolite | Ch 1 H Purple/Boss Of note: Healing Mail is listed as Jonathan only on some item lists, but I verified that Shanoa can equip this item, so I assume it will drop for her also (following the logic of this game that characters can receive items that they can equip). It is a boss only drop from Chapter 2 Hard. Credits ( CDT1 ) Mzo - basically played every game with him. AuTpBoRomulus - GameFAQs user who had a Jonathan FAQ up but removed it for some reason.
