In the following sections I provide the little snapshot the game gives him and info I know about him based on the games I've played. ------------------------------------ 1.1) Game Profile ------------------------------------ (This came from the game, unless otherwise noted, so credit goes to the makers of the game for this section.) Real Name: Dante Occupation: Devil Hunter Abilities: In addition to his large sword and handguns, he can transform into a demon through his Devil Trigger ability. While transformed, he gains access to new powers. Weapons: While best known for his large sword Rebellion and his personally hand-crafted guns Ebony and Ivory, he can use weapons from any place and time -- shotguns, dual swords, nunchaku, rocket launchers, etc. Profile: Half-man half-demon born from the legendary devil knight Sparda and his human wife Eva. When he was still young, his mother was killed in a demon attack. To hunt down those responsible, he became a Devil Hunter and opened up a shop named "Devil May Cry." First Appearance: Devil May Cry (2001) ACTUAL Intelligence | 4/7 Strength | 6/7 Speed | 6/7 Stamina | 6/7 Energy Projection | 4/7 Fighting Ability | 6/7 -------------------------- 1.2) Extended Profile -------------------------- This part is all coming off my recollection of the character from the original stories he is apart of. Enjoy. SPOILER ALERT: I reveal the major plots of DMC 3 and 1 below, so if you plan to play them you may wish to skip to the next section. Dante is a half-human half-demon that has dedicated his life to the extermination of every demon in the world. His father is a very powerful demon known as Sparda, who sealed away the demon world and thus his own powers in the process. He has an identicle twin brother, Vergil, who devoted the last years of his life trying to recover their father's sealed powers. The only way this can be done is by acquiring a jewel Sparda used to seal away the demon-world, which was split into two halves (one for Dante and the other for Vergil). This jewel was one half of the most powerful weapon in the series, named Sparda after the demon who wielded it. This sword is made of a festering flesh that can retract and extend to roughly 3 times its length at the will of the user (as can be seen through Trish in Marvel vs Capcom 3). Starting from the prequel to it all (devil may cry 3), Dante has just moved into his shop. Eating a pizza in peace while trying to come up with a name for his business a mysterious man enters. Dante lets the man know that the store isn't open just yet, but the individual continues to examine his surroundings. "Is your name Dante? Son of Sparda?" Dante becomes cautious of the stranger; this information is known to only a select few. The man reveals that it was Dante's twin brother, Vergil, who sent him. Saying he has a "gift" for Dante, the stranger places his hand on Dante's desk. With a simple flick of his wrist he sends the desk hurling towards Dante, who easily evades the attack, but suddenly finds himself alone in his store once more. Catching his pizza falling out of the air, Dante pretends like nothing happened and resumes eating. Just before he gets the next bite a gang of demons warp into the world from all around him and impale him with scythe blades from all directions... but something's wrong. One of the demons looks to him in disbelief as Dante obliterates him with a casual shove, catching the demon's head as it drops and spinning it on one finger like it were a basketball. Walking forward as if four demons weren't even there, Dante drags the dumb- founded others before punting them into the air with a minor tap from the heel of his right boot. Dante then playfully turns on the jukebox in the corner of his store before clearing the room of enemies using the broken scythe blades lodged in his flesh. As a finale to the battle Dante cuts his pool table in half and in slow motion shoots the airborne cue ball into the other airborne pool balls and defeats a lonely set of enemies. Now on the lookout for his brother Vergil, who is up to no good apparently, Dante exits his shop to be greeted by a Hell Vanguard. Fearing for its own life after battling with Dante, the Vanguard flees to the Temen-Ni-Gru (a massive pillar-like superstructure that acts as the seal separating the demon world from the human world). At the top of this structure awaits Vergil, who is not pleased to find the Vanguard returning empty handed. As the Vanguard begs for mercy Vergil turns to walk away. The Vanguard begs a little more and Vergil pulls his katana, Yamato, from its sheath and spins it for a second before slowly sheathing it. Though Vergil made no strike towards the Vanguard, the moment the hilt of the blade locked shut the Vanguard shredded into pieces. Dante eventually makes his way to the top of the tower and confronts his brother. The two battle it out as a storm looms over head and begins to downpour. Despite all of Dante's natural battle prowess, he is no match for his highly technical brother (who can move so fast he catches the bullets Dante fires at and throws them back!) and is eventually overwhelmed and finds himself run through by his brother's blade. "... without power you cannot protect anything, let alone yourself." As Vergil rips his sword out of Dante he snatches Dante's half of the amulet and turns to leave until Dante starts to get back up. The ever vigilant Vergil senses this movement and with blinding speed he whips around, grabs Rebellion (Dante's primary weapon), and sticks his brother to the floor with it. This is not even enough to keep Dante down as he erupts in a tower of rainwater and dashes after his brother, who stops his attack by pulling his sword partway out of the sheath. "I see the devil inside you has awakened as well..." Blind in a rage, Dante twists his hand around with the blade embedded in his knuckles and gets a grip on it before throwing Vergil to the other end of the arena. Landing without any problem, Vergil goes in for the finish and is halted by the words of his partner in crime: the stranger from before, Arkham. Dante is still of use to their plan... As Dante staggers over to his brother his body pulses with a foreign energy. Shortly after Vergil and Arkham leave Dante explodes with energy as he activates his devil trigger for the first time and takes the form of a demon for just a moment before he passes out. Waking up some time later, his wounds completely healed, Dante resumes searching for his brother to stop him from unsealing the demon realm. Deep inside the tower Vergil attempts to undo the seal his father placed so many years ago by offering the completed jewel and his blood, but nothing happens. Frustrated, Vergil works up into a fit just as Dante strolls into the sanctum. "Dante..." Threatened by Dante's presence, Vergil reaches for his sword and listens to his brother's short rant. The two ready themselves for battle and go at it again, this time both of them using their hellish powers. As the battle draws to a close the two are suddenly interrupted by Arkham, who reveals he had been using the two of them to unlock the demon world. Having fought a grueling battle, neither Dante nor Vergil can properly defend themselves from Arkham as he banishes them to the bottom of the tower before unlocking the gate to the demon realm. Alone again, Dante returns to the top of the tower to pursue Arkham into the demon realm and stop him from obtaining the power of Sparda. Deep inside Hell, however, Arkham discovers the other half of the sword of Sparda and combines it with the jewel he recovered from the alter Vergil was using from before. With the Sparda's sword in his possession, Arkham is momentarily enveloped in flames as he absorbs the devil's massive powers. Some time later Dante catches up to Arkham and discovers him taking the form of his father. "What do you think after looking at your father's image?" Completely unnerved by the wretched soul Dante prepares for battle, but then something happens. Unable to control such immense power Arkham begins to bloat up and deform into a gelatinous mass. "Oh come on, my father wasn't so hideous! Can't you tell by looking at me?" As Dante admires his own reflection in his sword, Arkham moves to clear the smug look of Dante's face. The battle between the two rages on in wave after wave of attacks. After having removed half of Arkham's health Dante finds himself tuckering out and is unable to dodge the demon's next attack. But then a sudden pulse rips the tentacle Arkham sent after Dante in half... and standing on the rim of the arena is Vergil. Teaming up for their first and only time, Dante and Vergil easily dispatch the false demon. Standing on the fringe of the arena Dante draws his two handguns to finish off Arkham, but sudden tentacle slaps a gun from his hand. Vergil, standing next to Dante, catches the gun and points it at the demon. "I'll try it your way for once." - Vergil "Remember what we used to say?" - Dante Vergil smiles. "Jackpot." - Vergil & Dante The brothers fire a shot simultaneously and disintegrate Arkham. Vergil tosses Dante his gun back before they both notice both halves of Sparda's power sinking into the void. The rivalry back in full force they dive into the void after the pieces. Landing in the deepest depths of hell, Dante recovers his half of the jewel and finds himself an equal distance away from the Force Sword as his brother. Vergil charges in first and takes the sword. Vergil, possessing his half of the jewel and the sword, eyes up the last jewel fragment in Dante's hand. "Give that to me." "No way, you got your own." "Well I want yours too." The two draw blades on each other one last time, this time Dante coming out victorious for the first time and in definitive fashion. Vergil, hanging on the last bits of his pride after losing the Force Sword to Dante, cradles the last remnant he possesses of his dead mother (his jewel). "This belongs to a son of Sparda." Dante attempts to save his desperate brother as Vergil falls off into the darkness, but Vergil stops him. As Vergil dissappears, Dante turns to return to the human world. Standing alone at the base of the spire, Dante's eyes water for the first time at the pain of losing his brother. This was the inspiration for the name of his store: Devil May Cry. Years later, in Devil May Cry 1, Dante accepts a job that takes him to mysterious island where deranged demon puppets attempt to tear him to shreds. On this island he encounters an incredibly strong and bulky demon referred to as Nelo Angelo (who cannot speak). Despite the demon's massive power Dante manages to eventually subdue him. Amongst the chaos brought by the battle, when Nelo Angelo dies he drops a shiny red jewel with Vergil's name etched on the back side. It is here the player and Dante realizes the demon was his brother, Vergil. A hidden movie after the credits of DMC 3 depicts Vergil wondering around the depths of hell after his loss to Dante. Standing in a lake of blood he spies the three electric emissions of energy that is the essence of Mundus, the current devil king if you will. Vergil is depicted charging the ruler of the demons as the screens fades to black. Dante then uses his brother's half of the amulet to reforge the sword of Sparda, which he uses to defeat Mundus once and for all time. Returning home with Trish, a demon created by Mundus to assassinate Dante by taking the shape of his dead mother, Dante goes to take his next order. Years later comes the events of DMC 2, but I'm even going to bother with it because it added absolutely no value to the series. However, years after that, Vergil's son, Nero, makes his first appearance. Pursuing Dante because he believes him to be evil now (Dante did blow the pope's brains out of his skull after all). In his journey he encounters Dante several times, but constantly finds himself inadequate to Dante's insane skills and powers. Even after obtaining his father's long lost sword, Yamato, and earning his own devil trigger he is still unable to deal any damage to the hero of the series. Eventually Dante reveals to Nero what he knew was a lie and that the members of that church were in fact demons. From there on the two fight together and Dante lets the young Nero keep Yamato (Dante already has his own weapon plus the sword of sparda, why not give up Yamato?). Fighting together, Dante and Nero save the world from the grip of the demons once more and they go their separate ways again. NOTE: I say Nero is Vergil's son for several reasons: He's not Dante's kid, Yamato (Vergil's weapon) is drawn to him, and the demon hiding inside the blade that emerges when he uses devil trigger is clearly a cross between Nelo Angelo (the mind-controlled Vergil from DMC 1) and Vergil's devil trigger from DMC 3. Like father like son I figure, plus I've never heard of any definitive explanation of him so this is all conjecture. THE HISTORY OF DANTE'S WEAPONS ------------------------------- Outside of Dante's greatsword, Rebellion, and his twin handguns, Ebony and Ivory, his arsenal changes from game to game. The Dante that appears in this game is not a compilation of him from all of his games, but a direct copy of him from Devil May Cry 3. As such, for those who would like to know, how Dante came about acquiring the extra weapons he boasts is included below. Shotgun - Found mounted on a wall in a bar outside his shop. Demonic Crossbow "Artemis" - Mounted on an alter out of reach inside Temen-Ni Gru, Dante needed to acquire three gems to activate the alter, destroy an obstruction, and lower the bow. Rocket Launcher "Kalina Anne" - The weapon of Arkham's daughter, Mary, with the name of her mother engraved on it, Dante is awarded this weapon for proving to Mary that he has more family problems at stake than she does. The rocket launcher is a combo of several weapons: it can fire a single unguided missile, numerous sub-rockets, or a zipline using the bayonette tip. Nunchaku "Cerberus" - The guardian to the entrance to the tower Temen-Ni Gru, Cerberus was portrayed as a 3-headed dog that held master over ice instead of fire... anyway, after its defeat Cerberus compressed itself into this 3-headed nunchaku for Dante's use. Fire & Wind Swords "Agni & Rudra" - Twin demons who guarded access to the roof of the spire. They were literally talking swords that possessed demonic vessels for bodies, they attacked Dante together and lost. As a result they offered him their power as weapons. Dante has one demand: they don't speak... ever. Vampiric Guitar "Nevan" - A vampire guarding a random item Dante needs to progress in the game, Nevan apparently knew Dante's father, Sparda, intimitely. With a swarm of bats and control over lightning at her disposal her flirtaceous passes were exposed as the ploys that they were by Dante. In her defeat in his arms, she morphed into this guitar. Gauntlet and Grieves "Beowulf" - An incredibly powerful demon that was betrayed by Sparda long ago and now seeks to remove all traces of him from existence, Beowulf smells Dante's father on him and attacks out of the blue. A dog-like demon sporting twin pairs of angelic wings and a scar leaving him blind in one eye, Beowulf's defeat eventually gives Dante the strongest weapon in the series to date. ("Eventually" because Vergil is the one who finishes Beowulf off and Dante finds the discarded weapons later when Vergil disappears) -------------------------- 1.3) Alternate Costumes -------------------------- Costume 1 (X) - Standard - This is the way Dante originally appeared in Devil May Cry 3 (he had roughly 5 other costumes in that game). Costume 2 (Sqr) - Black - Nothing special, he just looks badass in black i guess. Costume 3 (Tri) - White - Nothing special, just a white look for him with crazy blue hair. Costume 4 (R1) - Combat Black - An interesting look. Makes him look like a really badass human. He has a dark-colored coat with brown hair and urban cameo pants. -------------------------- 1.4) In-Game Dialogue -------------------------- This section contains notable dialogue Dante says during battle. Things like him shouting a character's name is omitted unless he refers to the character in a special way. Also, sayings directed at him by characters that are unique are also written down. If I'm missing any please let me know, but make sure it's not like: Dr Doom while swapping mid-battle "Dante!" Intros: "Let's get this over with." "Let's get this party started." "So are ya gonna fight, or what?" "Let's rock, baby." "Bring it on!" "I'm not going to pull my punches" To Viewtiful Joe - "It's alright Joe, be cool." From Viewtiful Joe - "It's stylish vs beautiful. Okay then!" To female opponents - "How come I never meet any nice girls?" To Trish - "Don't think I'm gonna go easy on ya." But I just woke up!" "Sometimes you just gotta out-crazy the crazies if you wann beat 'em." "Wow! That was one hell of a party! Good thing loser pays for the damages." "I hope for your sake you have other redeeming qualities other than fighting." "Demons, superhumans. Meh. Same crap, different day." "Oh man, I'm starving. Where's my pizza?" To Trish - "C'mon, Trish. You'll have to do better to beat the most stylish, hottest demon hunter around." Taunt: "Ya done warming up yet?" or "Ready for some fun?" Million Dollars Activation - "keepin' it stylish..." Devil Trigger Activation - [shout] Devil Must Die - "You're finished..." HC Activation in a Series: Middle - "All right!" This can give insight as to how useful moves are and different strategies they can be applied to. The names of the move and the inputs, of course, came from the game. The description of the moves are mine. Dante fires a shot into the air, causing a rain of energy fire from above. (up to 5 hits) Crystal (236+M) - Using the nunchakus called Cerberus (who was a three headed dog of the ICE element for some reason in DMC 3) he produces a fan-like eruption of icicles. (hits up to 4 times) Million Carats (During Crystal 236 + M) - Cancelling out of Crystal, Dante summons a curtain of ice around him. Hysteric (236 + H) - After imbedding the bayonette tip of a rocket launcher named Kalina Anne in the ground, the butt of the launcher produces several homing missiles. (up to 8 hits) Grapple (During Hysteric 236 + H) - Cancelling out of Hysteric, Dante fires the bayonette tip into the enemy and pulls the enemy next to him. Reverb Shock (214 + L) - Dante slides forward while strumming Nevan, a vampiric guitar, and is coated by her purple lighting. (up to 5 hits) Fireworks (During Reverb Shock, H) - Dante comes out of Reverb Shock flipping his shotgun several times. Hits roughly 20 times point blank. Tempest (during Twister 623 + L) - Dante comes out of Twister jumping into the air and redoing the same trick, adding an extra 10 hits to the combo. Volcano (623 + M) - Using a gauntlet from the Beowulf set, Dante punches the ground and makes an explosion of light. Beehive (during Volcano 623 + M) - Dante cancels before the punch and lays a beatdown of kicks before spiking his foe. Hits 9 times. Jam Session (623 + H) - Dante slides forward on his knees while blasting his guitar, Nevan, producing a pillar of electric energy for 10 hits. Killer Bee (in air 236 + L) - Using a grieve from the Beowulf set he dives foot-first from the air at a 30 degree angle. Causes enemies to ricochete off the floor. The Hammer (during killer bee 236 + L) - Using both gauntlets from the Beowulf set he hammerblows the enemy out of the air. Air Play (in air 236 + M) (can be charged) - Dante strums Nevan and releases a charge of energy. Hits 1 time uncharged and up to 5 times fully charged. Air Trick (22 + S) - Dante uses his trickster style to teleport behind the enemy. Really useful and fun. Drive (236 + S) - Dante winds up his sword and unleashes a blade beam. Not special. ------------------------------------ 2.4) Hyper Combos ------------------------------------ Million Dollars (236 + atk atk) - Dante twirls his handguns Ebony and Ivory for a second before unleashing a myriad of pistol shots, ending with one final blast while saying "Jackpot." (28 hits) Devil Trigger (214 + atk atk) - Dante activate his devil trigger, and for the next couple seconds he gains the ability to use the following moves: Air Raid (214 + S) - Dante enters flight for a short time. Thunder Bolt (in air 236 + S) - Dante fires a diagonal blast of lightning. (hits 8 times) Vortex (in air 623 + S) - Dante barrels horizontally through the air. (hits 5 times) Devil Must Die (623 + atk atk) Consumes 3 HC gauges - Dante enters a ready stance and performs an attack called stinger to the enemy. If this hits he slides back and forth, stingering the enemy several times before, in a cinematic, he finishes the enemy off using a hyper stinger that launches the enemy into a fantastic rune for major damage. (Hits 6 times). ============================================================================= 3.0) Strategies ============================================================================= In this section I will cover what combos I have developed with Dante that makes him a formidable character. The first sub-section covers specific combos I have performed that are either very flashy or incredibly devastating or useful. The second section is meant to set up basic combos with him when he is the only character you have left. ------------------------------------ 3.1) Team Hyper Combos ------------------------------------ Of Dante's 3 hyper combos, only 2 of them are battle useful: Million Dollars and Devil Must Die. The devil trigger can be nice, but for one gauge anything could work better. Below is a compilation of some team-based hyper combo chains Dante works well in. Deadpool (Happy-Happy Trigger) --> Million Dollars [To cornered opponent] Deadpool (HHT) --> Million Dollars --> X-factor --> Die Devil Die Ryu (Shinku Tatsumaki Senpukyaku) --> Million Dollars/Die Devil Die Chris (Grenade Launcher) --> Million Dollars/DDD - Cancel into Dante in between shots 2 and 3 of chris's launcher. Wesker (Rhino Charge) --> Million Dollars/DDD - Requires you capture an enemy's attack for Rhino Charge to pull off, but it is a wicked scary looking combo should you ever pull it off. If you pull it off in a match there will be applause. Amaterasu (Okami Shuffle) --> Million Dollars - Time the cancel during the lightning segment of Ammy's so that the enemy gets floored by the last bolt into Dante's gunfire. This also works going from Million Dollars to Okami Shuffle, but if Dante pushes the enemy to the opposite end of the screen Okami Shuffle deals minimal damage. [Contributed by: Baka88s/ZeroCross] Dante (Million Dollars) --> Tron (Servbot Takeout) - Cancel just after Dante's second to last shot (where the enemy starts tumbling through the air before "jackpot"). The little pellet Tron shoots out will connect and her attack will be a success. [Thanks: Jefferson Liang] Dante (Million Dollars) --> Felicia (Dancing Flash) --> Ryu (Shinku Hadoken) --> X-Factor --> Ryu (Shinku Tatsumaki...) --> Dante (Million Dollars) - This move can only be done with the opponent held against a wall with Dante at mid-screen or closer (or Felicia's attack will miss). Make sure you cancel the attacks before the enemy gets knocked into the air or else the series will miss. If comboed into correctly this is an instant kill to any character except Sentinel at full health (Sentinel is reduced to a sliver). An easy combo into this is L, M, H, 874+H. Others I feel are a little too simple (like Wolverine into Dante) because million dollars covers such a wide variety of purposes most are just too mundane. If you know of an exotic hyper combo chain, please let me know and you'll have your name show up in the guide next to your attack. ------------------------------------ 3.2) Solo Battle ------------------------------------ Dante as a solo fighter is amazing (I bet he's near top tier). With such a diverse movelist he can be difficult to play with, but if you get used to him it opens up a huge array of highly damaging combos. Basic to Advanced Combos L, M, H, S, [air combos] L, M, H, 6+HHH..., S, [air combo] L, M, H, 214 H, [finisher] L, M, H, S into H into S [air combo] ... air L, air M, air H, air S ... air L, air M, air H, air 236 L, 214 L into H, [finisher] ... air L, air M, air H, air 236 L, 623 H, [finisher] ... air L, air M, air M, air 623 H, [finisher] [Finisher] ... Million Dollars (236 + atk atk), [Ultimate] [Ultimate] *If enemy is cornered and you are close to mid-range ... X-Factor, Devil May Die (623 atk atk) NOTE: To X-factor from Million Dollars to DMD you must cancel before the second to last shot or the enemy will be popped up and out of range. ============================================================================= 4.0) Missions ============================================================================= In this section we tackle Dante's missions (or at least the ones I can do). Most missions are straight forward, but for some characters beating a mission requires rediculously perfect timing and if I have completed them this section will be useful to those who are stumped. Ones I've Completed: 1 - 10 Ones I have not completed: N/A Mission 1 - Attack using Crystal Solution: 236+M Mission 2 - Chain together two special moves Solution: 214+H into H Mission 3 - Chain together two special moves Solution: Air 236+L, 623+H Mission 4 - Perform a combo using a cancel Solution: L, M, H, 623+H Mission 5 - Perform a combo using a hyper combo cancel Solution: Air H, M, H, 623+H, 236 atk atk Strategy: jump and press H before you hit the ground, timing the attack so the hit lands as you touch the floor and immediately go into the rest of the combo. Mission 6 - Perform a combo using an air combo Solution: Air H, M, H, S, air M, air H, air S Strategy: jump and press H before you hit the ground, timing the attack so the hit lands as you touch the floor and immediately go into the rest of the combo. Mission 7 - Perform a combo using X-factor Solution: Air H, 2+M, H, 214+H, 236+atk atk, X-factor, 623 atk atk Strategy: As you perform the combo to Jet Stream, let the length of the attack give you the pause to activate Million Dollars. Million Dollars is a long move, so take a quick breath and X-factor into Devil May Die before the second to last shot or else you'll surely miss. Mission 8 - Perform a combo using a knockdown followup and assist (corner) Solution: 2+L, 2+M, H, S, air M, air M, jump, air M, air H, air S, P2, 3+HHH... into S. Strategy: The major ass ache here is getting the assist character to come in and keep the combo alive while you struggle to recover and cancel million stabs into the downward gunfire move. Patience and quick timing is key. NOTE: Arthur seems to be a worthless input, so just mash P2 and go as fast as you can into 3+HHH... to pick the downed enemy off the ground and then rapidly hit S to change into prop shredder from the gunfire. Mission 9 - Perform a combo with a ground bounce Solution: 2+L, 2+M, H, S, air M, air M, jump, air M, air H, air 236+L, H, 214+L into H, 236 atk atk Strategy: The major trouble is coming out of the air and continuing the combo. Just input the moves as quickly as you can while being "smooth" as any wrong input starts the process over again. Practice is useful here, so just keep trying. Mission 10 - Perform a special combo (corner only) Solution: L, M, H, S, air M, air M, jump, air M, air H, air S, 3+HHH... into 6+H, S+atk, air 236+L, 214+L into H, 236 atk atk. Strategy: A LOOOOONG attack that requires a LOT of practice. The major trouble is getting from 9+HHH... to air 896+L, where the combo becomes annoying fast paced. As you drag the enemy out of the air start holding 9 and start mashing H until you see the energy flash that signals the ground shooting, then start holding 6 and keep mashing H until you hear stinger go off. From here you have a semi- solid moment to hit S and L (which brings you into the air) and finish off the combo with that common finisher. ============================================================================= 5.0) Contact Information ============================================================================= If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
