Originating on the X-Box 360, it proved so popular that it was ported to the Playstation 3 and even the PC (despite the presence of the superior Magic Online already). A sequel has already been released on all three platforms as well. The original Duels of the Planeswalkers received three expansion (DLC) packs adding new cards, challenges, and opponents each time. This guide focuses on the first expansion pack, called Duel the Dragon. The later expansion packs dropped names for whatever reason, but followed suit with similiar amounts of content. I am writing this guide because while there is a lot of coverage of the base game online, very little beyond achievement guides can be found for any of the three expansions. This is understandable I suppose given that less and less people likely downloaded each consecutive pack, but I hope that this compilation of information can be useful to anyone picking up these packs who needs some help or information. =============================================================================== Section 2.0 - Duel the Dragon =============================================================================== Section 2.1 - Duel the Dragon Single-Player Campaign =============================================================================== Duel the Dragon adds five rounds to the single-player campaign. You face both Sarkhan Vol and Jace Beleren twice each, followed finally by Nicol Bolas once. Sarkhan Vol and Jace Beleren vary ever so slightly between matches, but the core strategy between them remains the same. Below are some tips on how to deal with all three opponents. Sarkhan Vol - Cries of Rage --------------------------- Sarkhan Vol's new deck emphasizes warrior creatures. He has a lot of creatures and a good mix of both big and small ones. Sarkhan can be pretty solid from start to finish, so there is not ever a time in the game where he is ostensibly weaker than others. You want to be as offensive as possible with Sarkhan. He has a lot of buff spells, so he has a real bad habit of surprising you with a Giant Growth or a Sangrite Surge on one of his creatures. Keep track of how many cards he has in his hand and what kind of mana he has available. If he has no green open, then even if he has a Giant Growth it won't be coming for you. If you're playing with a deck with creature removal, Bramblewood Paragons are your number one removal priority. These elves will give every creature Sarkhan summons a +1/+1 counter and trample. Likewise if you have artifact removal, destroy his Obsidian Battle-Axes. Another creature to watch out for is Mudbutton Torchrunner. Sarkhan will try to goad you into killing him in order to burn your back row creatures. Gauge the situation and make the call if it is better to let the goblin chip you each turn vice losing a weak creature with a powerful effect. Sarkhan is susceptible to creature removal and fliers. Liliana Vess might be your best bet for creature removal alone. You might consider Nissa Revane for the same reason, but take note that if you play Coat of Arms it will benefit Sarkhan very greatly as well. Jace Beleren - Mind of Void --------------------------- The single largest weakness to take advantage of with Jace Beleren is that his deck is very slow. His creatures are expensive and all his milling spells take a fair amount of mana that he needs to build up. Cancel, Condemn, and Dream Fracture will probably be your early game hassles. You need to get some creatures out before he starts throwing these spells around and begin chipping right away. Once Jace has three mana he will start countering everything you do. Ideally you want to weaken Jace right away. The longer the match goes, the more powerful he becomes. Jace is not a burst damage player; he slowly builds and builds and most of his effects are ongoing. Once he gets a Memory Erosion or two out, you're going to start losing cards very rapidly. Jace is one of the few opponents that having lots of extra unlockable cards in your deck is useful. Counterbore can really ruin your day as well if he counters something you have multiple copies of. Traumatize is another major spell that will ruin you, forcing you to discard half your deck. Late game Jace will begin dropping Mahmoti Djinn and hammering you. He also has a high probability of getting at least on Kiss of the Amesha if the game goes on more than eight or so turns. This sorcery heals him for seven life and lets him draw two cards, a huge boon for his tactic of delay. You really want to lock down Jace before turn ten. If the duel lasts much longer than that, your chances of winning are massively diminished. Win fast and overwhelm Jace before he stops your deck from playing anything. Nicol Bolas - Eons of Evil -------------------------- Nicol Bolas is very difficult. In a lot of ways, he is harder than any of the other expansion bosses. He uses a lot of dragons and a lot of direct damage and removal spells. Bolas' greatest weakness is his reliance on three colors of mana. Usually he does not have trouble getting the colors he needs, but every now and then you can catch a lucky break and he will get mana screwed. Aside from hoping for a lucky break, your best bet is to go with a flood strategy. Nissa Revane, Elspeth Tirel, or Sarkhan Vol are probably your best bets. Heavy control decks just cannot compete at the same level as Bolas, forcing you to rely on brute force. Setting up a situation where Bolas' own creatures work against him is not only satisfying, but is often necessary. If you can eliminate all of his creatures while he has a Xathrid Demon in play, you're almost guaranteed a win. The AI is finicky as it will cast Xathrid Demon even if it has no other creatures in play, just don't hold your breath that he draws one. Nicol Bolas is very difficult and will require a lot of patience and careful planning. Sometimes you just get unlucky too and Bolas will seemingly draw the perfect card for every situation multiple turns in a row. Just keep at it and you will eventually dethrone the dragon. =============================================================================== Section 2.2 - Duel the Dragon Two-Headed Giant Campaign =============================================================================== Duel the Dragon adds four more matches to the Two-Headed Giant Campaign. These rounds mix both the new decks with the old, making for some interesting combo decks for you and a friend to face. Sarkhan Vol - Cries of Rage / Ajani Goldmane - Claws of Vengeance ----------------------------------------------------------------- Ajani Goldmane and Sarkhan Vol will comprise your first duo of opponents. With two players, neither should present much of a threat. Ajani Goldmane utilizies a lot of low cost creatures, although nothing you have not already seen in the normal game campaign. Probably the most annoying thing he will throw at you are his Woolly Thoctars. These 5/4 beasts for three mana always seem to show up by turn three or four. Thankfully he does not seem to have more than a couple of them in this version of the deck. Sarkhan Vol emphasizes warrior creatures. He has a lot of creatures and a good mix of both big and small ones. Sarkhan can be pretty solid from start to finish, so there is not ever a time in the game where he is ostensibly weaker than others. Both are susceptible to creature removal and fliers. Liliana Vess might be your best bet for creature removal alone. You might consider Nissa Revane for the same reason, but take note that if you play Coat of Arms it will benefit both of them very greatly as well. Jace Beleren - Mind of Void / Nissa Revane - Ears of Elves ---------------------------------------------------------- This second duo is very tough. Jace Beleren provides the control, while Nissa Revane provides the troops. This duel is actually much tougher then the next one following it. As mentioned, Jace Beleren provides all the traditiona blue control spells. Cancel, Condemn, and Dream Fracture will probably be your early game hassles. You need to get some creatures out before he starts throwing these spells around and begin chipping right away. Once Jace has three mana he will start countering everything you do. Counterbore can really ruin your day as well if he counters something you have multiple copies of. Traumatize is another major spell that will ruin you, forcing you to discard half your deck. Nissa Revane, meanwhile, provides a strong elf tribal theme. All of her creatures are elves, meaning they all take advantge of the many elf abilities she will throw out at you. Elvish Champion and Imperious Perfect both come in multiple copies and both provide buffs to all her elves, raising power and toughness, and giving them forestwalk in the case of the Elvish Champions. These nasty little leaders are your biggest creature concerns as they make everything else bigger and better. Nissa Revane also has at least two copies of Talara's Battalion. This is a two-mana creature that is 4/3 and has trample. The only caveat is that she must cast another green spell that turn to play them, but given her relative low costs you will sometimes see this turn three or four after a Giant Growth, Elvish Visionary, or Elvish Eulogist. Sarkhan Vol - Cries of Rage / Jace Beleren - Mind of Void --------------------------------------------------------- Jace Beleran and Sarkhan Vol team up for the third round. Of the two, Jace Beleren will probably cause you the most trouble. Sarkhan provides him with creature cover, however, so while Jace will do most of the direct harm to you and your friend, Sarkhan will protect the rear as it were. The single largest weakness to take advantage of with Jace Beleren is that his deck is very slow. Sarkhan Vol's new deck emphasizes warrior creatures. He has a lot of creatures and a good mix of both big and small ones. Sarkhan can be pretty solid from start to finish, so there is not ever a time in the game where he is ostensibly weaker than others. You want to be as offensive as possible with Sarkhan. Liliana Vess might be your best bet for creature removal alone. You might consider Nissa Revane for the same reason, but take note that if you play Coat of Arms it will benefit Sarkhan very greatly as well. Nicol Bolas - Eons of Evil / Tezzeret the Seeker - Relics of Doom ----------------------------------------------------------------- Nicol Bolas and Tezzeret the Seeker form a two-boss coalition for your final match in this campaign. Nicol Bolas will dominate of the two, making him the fiercer opponent. Etherium Sculptor is Tezzeret's most dangerous weapon. These critters reduce the cost of all hist artifacts by one mana each. Given that all his creatures and all but two non-creature spells are artifacts, this is very powerful. Likewise, Master of Etherium gains power and toughness for each artifact in play. Either of these should be high-priority targets. Tezzeret also has a lot of flying creatures. Sometimes he will be very nasty with his Glaze Fiends, which gain +2/+2 for each artifact he plays until end of turn, but he does not seem to use them totally effectively. Tidehollow Strix, however, he will use to block you every time he can for an easy kill with deathtouch. Cancel and Terror are his two removal spells; Cancel for countering spells and Terror for creature removal. Beyond that, Onyx Goblet serves as a surefire method of causing chipping damage every turn to you as well if he gets one out early on. Howling Mine is a double-edged sword. It forces everyone, both you and him, to draw an extra card every turn. You get two or three in play and everyone will burn through their decks very quickly. This usually is helpful to you. =============================================================================== Section 2.3 - Duel the Dragon Challenges =============================================================================== Below are the solutions to the three new challenges added with Duel the Dragon. When reading these solutions, play cards IN THE EXACT ORDER specified. Doing otherwise will not guarantee you a win, so please make sure you have the order correct before engaging in spell casts and attacks. Jace Beleren - Challenge 1 -------------------------- Begin by casting Etherium Sculptor. Now cast Master of Etherium. Now cast Howling Mine. Cast Onyx Goblet next. For your fifth cast, cast your Loxodon Warhammer. With all these out, use the activated ability on Onyx Goblet and target Jace Beleren. Cast Terror on the Wall of Air to destroy it. Lastly, attack Jace with every creature you can to win. Elspeth Tirel - Challenge 2 --------------------------- Begin by casting Jagged Lightning and target both Mudbutton Torchrunner and Angel of Mercy. This will activate Mudbutton Torchrunner's ability, so have it target Elspeth Tirel. Now cast Vengeful Firebrand. Enter the attack phase and have both Bramblewood Paragon and Vengeful Firebrand attack Elspeth to win. Liliana Vess - Challenge 3 -------------------------- This one is a little tricky. Begin by playing your Plains. Now skip to the attack phase and have Ambassador Laquatus attack Liliana Vess. Before she can assign defenders, cast Condemn on Ambassador Laquatus. Once this resolves, cast Kiss of Amesha on yourself. Now cast Wrath of God and end your turn. Liliana Vess will always cast Phage the Untouchable and Nightmare on her next turn, just as the introduction dialogue suggests. When your turn begins, play your next Plains. Now cast Ambassador Laquatus. Use Ambassador Laquatus' ability and target Liliana Vess. Do this two more times to win. =============================================================================== Section 3.0 - Decks and Unlockables =============================================================================== Section 3.1 - New Deck Lists =============================================================================== Duel the Dragon adds three new playable decks, as well as a fourth boss deck that would not become playable until the second expansion. For the unlockabe cards in these decks, a number appears in paranthesis next to it. This number indicates how many wins with the deck you must earn before unlocking said card. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Section 3.1.1 - Sarkhan Vol (Cries of Rage) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sarkhan Vol's new deck, Cries of Rage, is built around warriors. With matching creature types, your army grows stronger and stronger. Warrior is the most important type here, but giant and other races can combo to some degree as well. Axegrinder Giant, Elvish Warrior, and Goblin Piker are three vanilla warriors. They do nothing special alone, but as you will see that creature type is very useful. Similiarly, Cloudcrown Oak and Rip-Clan Crasher offer small benefits (reach and haste, respectively), but their primary contribution is again the warrior creature type. Bramblewood Paragon allows every warrior that enters play under your control to come into play with a +1/+1 counter. Further, all your creatures with such counters gain trample. These elves are among your best forces in this deck. At only two mana, if you have one in your opening hand they should be your first creature cast. Oakgnarl Warrior is a big, expensive warrior with trample and vigilance. They are your late game, not often-played bruisers. They also play into the warrior mechanic. Mudbutton Torchrunner deals damage when it dies, making it a great choice for chipping attacks early on. You can also target who it deals three damage to when it dies, so you can use it to target a creature your opponent is having hide in his back row. Vengeful Firebrand is one of the unlockable creatures you have access to. She can be pumped at a rate of +1/+0 per one red mana. She also has haste as long as a warrior is in your graveyard. Borderland Behemoth is a giant who gets +4/+4 for each other giant you control. He also has trample. He is, however, very expensive and you will not often have both him and an Axegrinder Giant in play at the same time. If you do though, it is a nice bonus. Mirri, Cat Warrior is a third unlockable creature. This legendary has first strike, forestwalk, and vigiliance. She is a nice addition when you manage to draw her. Non-creature spells are largely of the direct damage variety. Incinerate, Jagged Lightning, Lava Axe, Hurricane, and Shock all serve as general purpose damage dealers. Beyond that, your other staples are stat buffers, such as Giant Growth and Sangrite Surge. There are also two unlockable Obisidian Battle-Axes. This equipment gives a creature +2/+1 and haste. It also can automatically equip to any warrior you bring into play, giving a buff and effectively eliminating summoning sickness for you if you have it in play. In the end, this is a tribal creature deck. You have some creature removal spells, but at it's heart we have a warrior tribal deck. Although Duels of the Planeswalkers does not have the card Millstone in this deck, your path to victory is the same. In general you are not looking to launch a physical assault with an army of creatures in Jace's deck. Instead your goal is to stall the match until your opponent runs out of cards, a goal you will help along the way. Jace only starts with ten creatures. Four of these are the vanilla Air Elementals that function as flying blockers. Wall of Air and Mahamoti Djinn serve a similiar function, although you can actually go on the offensive rather effectively if you have the mana and draw some djinns. Denzien of the Deep is a huge, expensive creature that can be a gamebreaker, but you probably will not often have the eight mana needed to cast it. The unlockable creatures include more defenders, another expensive bruiser called Isleback Spawn, and a Deft Duelist. Deft Duelist is a nifty creature that has both first strike and shroud, although since the deck only has one copy it is not a card you can make any strategies around. Instead of focusing on the creatures, you should focus on the slowing the game down. Cancel, Counterbore, and Dream Fracture are your straight spell counters, giving the deck an initial total of eight. You will unlock one more Counterbore as well. These are your tools for locking down your opponent's casting. Condemn is good for creature removal and you start with four of them, just remember that your opponent gians life when you use it. It is still excellent as long as your mill strategy is working as intended. Dispeller's Capsule is also useful against one of the artifact-heavy decks for similiar results. You also have a few Persuasions for directly taking control of an opponent's creature. Memory Erosion and Traumatize are your two big discard cards. Traumatize causes an opponent to discard half their library, speeding up the milling process. Memory Erosion causes your opponent to discard two cards from their library every time they cast a spell. This occurs in the game engine regardless of if the spell is countered, so take advantage of this mechanic. Kiss of the Amesha is a healing and card draw spell. Usually you will use this on yourself, but at times it can be useful against an opponent to simply force them to shrink their library. Remember that your opponent loses when they go to draw a card and there is no card to draw. No one loses immediately upon running out of cards, so make sure you can survive a last-ditch desperate assault once your foe is down to so few cards. Relics of Doom was the original boss deck of the base game. The playable version is nerfed from the original, but it is still a powerful deck. The problem is you need the unlockable cards to use it effectively, moreso than either of the other playable decks in the expansion. Etherium Sculptor is your bread and butter, although it needs to be unlocked. These critters reduce the cost of all your artifacts by one mana each. Given that all your creatures and all but two non-creature spells are artifacts, this is very powerful. Likewise, Master of Etherium gains power and toughness for each artifact in play. You also have a fair amount of flying creatures. Ornithopter is your flying chump blocker. Glaze Fiend has zero power, but it gains +2/+2 every time you play an artifact until the end of the turn. This has to be coordinated, so you may find yourself sitting on some cheap spells a turn or two to make the most use of this. Tidehollow Strix is your most versatile flier. It has deathtouch, meaning you can use it to chip an opponent who is weary of losing a creature to block it. On the other hand, you can also keep one untapped as an instant-death blocker. This latter strategy will more often than not, your opponent will simply not attack just in case you might block. Shardling Sphinx serves a dual role as a large flier and a token factory. Used with the Tidehollow Strix, which the AI will almost never block, you can flood the field with your Thopters. Cancel and Terror are your two removal spells; Cancel for countering spells and Terror for creature removal. Beyond that, Onyx Goblet serves as a surefire method of causing chipping damage every turn to your opponent. Howling Mine is a double-edged sword. It forces everyone, both you and your opponent, to draw an extra card every turn. You get two or three in play and everyone will burn through their decks very quickly. This usually is helpful to you, unless of course you are facing Jace Beleren's Mind of Void. Deck List --------- Alpha Myr (x2) Mana Cost - (2) Artifact Creature - Myr 2/1 Bottle Gnomes (x4) Mana Cost - (3) Artifact Creature - Gnome Sacrifice Bottle Gnomes: You gain 3 life. 1/3 Glaze Fiend (x4) Mana Cost - (1)(B) Artifact Creature - Illusion Flying. As one would surmise, this deck is very powerful. It is not playable without the second expansion, but you can face it in both the campaign and in a custom duel. For each of the cards listed below, a number appears in paranthesis next to it. This number indicates how many wins with the deck you must earn before unlocking said card. ===============================================================================
The first expansion to Duels of the Planeswalkers adds three achievements to
the X-Box 360 version and three trophies to the Playstation 3 version. Both
versions of the game have the same achievements/trophies.

Dragon Slayer
-------------
Silver Trophy / 20 Gamerscore
"Defeat Nicol Bolas in the single player campaign (Duel the Dragon)."

This achievement is your basic "beat the game" achievement. Defeat all five
opponents in the Duel the Dragon campaign to earn it. Alternately, if for
whatever reason you have already completed the campaign but the achievement
did not unlock, you only have to defeat Nicol Bolas himself for it to unlock;
normally you would have to beat the other four opponents to unlock the fight
however.

Overkill
--------
Silver Trophy / 15 Gamerscore
"Control creatures with a total power of 75 or more (Duel the Dragon)."

On the X-Box 360 you can actually earn this achievement without the full DLC,
but simply with the multiplayer update. The easiest way to achieve this feat
is to start a custom game, set your life to forty and your hand size to nine,
set your opponent's hand size to five and his life to twenty, select Garruk
Wildspeaker (Teeth of the Predator) as your opponent and Nissa Revane (Ears
of the Elves) for your own deck. Do not seek to win, instead just keep
cranking out more and more elves while keeping Garruk locked down. Garruk has
no direct creature removal or spell counters, so once you get a bit of a lead
in creatures on him he will be unable to really affect you. Once you have a
total of seventy-five power on the field, the achievement will unlock.

Puzzling Grandmaster
--------------------
Silver Trophy / 15 Gamerscore
"Earn Puzzling Master and complete all Duel the Dragon expansion challenges."

Complete the original eight challenges from the base game, then complete the
three new ones from the expansion. The solutions to the three new challenges
can be found earlier in this guide, while the solutions to the original eight
can be found elsewhere.
