Rather than including reminder text on every card ability, we've got them all in one convenient location. Basic definitions of card archetypes are also included. -Permanent A permanent is any card that stays in play for any amount of time after resolution. Card types that are permanents are lands, creatures, enchantments artifacts and creature tokens. Card types that are not permanents are sorceries and instants. This is of course unless another card makes those cards sorceries and/or instants. -Land A land produces colored mana. This mana allows you to play cards of the correct color. There are some lands that are colorless, however none are in the current edition of this game. -Instant An instant is a spell that may be played at any time that almost always has beneficial effects for the player who is using it. There are some times where some instants would be better used during attacking/blocking phases, however there could be lag issues in the current edition of this game. Holy Day is an instant that deserves a mention. -Enchantment An enchantment is a permanent that offers beneficial effects over an amount of time, rather than a one time boost like instants or sorceries. Enchantments often are high priority targets of removal for opponents, as they can turn the tide of the game. Examples of enchantments in this game are; Furnace of Rath, Dragon Roost, Crucible of Fire, Seismic Assault, Rage Reflection and Glorious Anthem. -Aura Auras are types of enchantments that provide boosts/detriments to a single creature, effectively giving them a different "aura". The idea is that the enchantment isn't global, and only effects an individual. There are auras that do provide bonuses/detriments to other creatures, but they are not included in this game. An aura will go to the graveyard when the creature it is attached to leaves play. -Sorcery A sorcery is a one time use card that gives beneficial effects to the caster. Often, if not always these effects are greater than an instant at the same converted mana cost. This is because sorceries can only be played during your turn, and only during your main phase. Overrun is an example of a sorcery that can easily turn the tide in your favor. -Creature Creatures serve two purposes in this game. They are your main offense in most cases, providing direct combat damage. They are also your main line of defense against enemy creatures. These creatures are often things that you would find in the land that you're playing. Playing a green deck? You'll experience lots of things that revolve around forests, like Wall of Wood. -Artifact Artifacts are basically enchantments under a new category. They're a permanent, so they stick around after they're casted. They'll often boost your creatures, provide life gain, or even have independent effects. Artifacts can also be creatures. It's still a creature, but it's also an artifact. -Equipment There's really only one piece of equipment in the game that we're allowed to play with. That's Loxodon Warhammer. Costs 3, has an equip cost of 3. This means that if I have six mana, I can play it, then equip it on a creature. If I've only got 3 leftover from casting all of my goodies, then I'll have to play it this turn, and equip it next. Thankfully, unlike the Auras these will 'drop' off a creature when that creature is defeated. -Token A token is a card that exists, but only on the play table. In this game, it is possible to only gain tokens of creatures and artifact creatures. What makes these different than regular creatures is that they no longer remain after they've been dealt with. Boomerang on a token will make the token return to your hand, but since it doesn't have a mana cost, or any other method to play it, it will simply vanish. -Flying Flying is a creature ability. It means that the creature has the capability of flight. Moreover, the capability of attacking while airborne, making a land bound defender moot. These creatures can only be blocked by other creatures with flying, or creatures with reach. -Fear Creatures with Fear cannot be blocked by nonblack, non artifact creatures. Any creature you can't kill with Terror can block a creature that has Fear. -Flash Although none of the cards in this game have Flash, it would be wrong for me to not mention Flash. Flash allows the card to be played any time you could play an instant. Yeah, this means creatures can be played on the stack. -(land)walk Forestwalk, Mountainwalk, Islandwalk... Nonbasicland walk? All of these are basically the same things. If your opponent controls one of these types of lands, a swamp for a Plague Beetle, for example, the creature is unblockable. -Protection Protection is sort of weird. This game only deals with Protection from Color cards at the moment, with a HINT at a trickier card (Mistmeadow Skulk) but that card never leaves the challenge area. -Trample Ever notice how when you attack with that 6/4 Craw Wurm and it gets blocked by the 1/1 Elvish Eulogist that you don't deal 5 damage to the opponent? Trample allows a creature to continue to damage the player after all the combat damage that can be assigned to a creature has been assigned. For example, the 7/7 Duskdale Wurm was blocked by a 3/2 Snapping Drake, and a 2/2 Elvish Warrior. Duskdale Wurm would deal 2 damage to the Elvish Warrior, and 2 damage to the Snapping Drake. Then it would trample over to the player for 3. Trample counts the toughness of a creature, not the power. -Deathtouch Gah. I hate deathtouch. It never seems to be all that powerful when I'm using it, and it always feels overpowered when my opponent is. Whenever a creature with Deathtouch damages another creature, that creature will die. In or out of combat if the damage is dealt, the damaged creature will die. Aren't you glad you aren't a creature? -Haste Haste negates summoning sickness. Normally, when a creature is summoned, it will sit for one turn with a tummy ache. With haste, they've taken their vitamins and are ready for action right away! -First Strike Normally, all damage is assigned at the same time. Everyone damages everyone else in a mesh of horrid scaly combat. With first strike, creatures will attack first, before the others. If a First striker is attacking with a power exceeding the toughness of a defender, the first striker will actually defeat the defender before they get the chance to deal damage to the attacking creature. Same goes the other way. This is why wall of spears is so effective at holding off early game attacks. No one wants to lose their 3/2 Troll Ascetic without at least taking something with them. This is a massive boost when a Furnace of Rath is on the field. -Double Strike First strikers are great. They deal damage before everyone else does, and stick around for the remaining horde to bash their heads in after dealing first strike damage. What? That doesn't sound like your idea of fun? You'd rather deal first strike AND normal attack damage? Nab yourself a double striker, then. Skyhunter Skirmisher fits the bill well, or make all your creatures double strikers with Rage Reflection! -Regenerate Oh boy. Regenerate works like this; If your creature is dealt lethal damage, or if it would be destroyed by a card effect, you can activate this ability before that ability resolves to protect your creature! Seems hefty, doesn't it? One of the main problems with Regenerate is that it taps out the creature. Guy uses his Prodigal Pyromancer targeting your Drudge skeletons that you were going to block that lightning elemental with and.... Bam! Suddenly, you don't have a blocker. Use this knowledge to your advantage. *Regenerate, in this game must be activated before lethal damage is done.* -Reach Reach gives a spider the ability to web up the flying creatures. Basically, it's all the defensive capabilities of flying, just without the bonus evasion. Kinda stinks a bit, but what else are you going to block that Suntail Hawk with when you're playing green? -Defender Defender is the ability that forbids a creature from making an attack, but still allows them to block. This ability is usually found on Walls, but occasionally crops up on Slivers as well. Makes sense though, not many walls I know of can smash up a Drove of Elves. But a Drove of Elves can sure run into a wall. *'`'`'*`'`''`*'`'`'*`''`*`'`'`*'`'`*'`'`* Credits!
