INTRODUCTION --------------- On November 20th, 2007, the face of the gaming world changed forever. Well, OK, so that's a rather melodramatic way of putting it, but Rock Band's release last year certainly ushered in a new era of kickass fantastic rhythm gameplay that has been utterly engrossing most everybody with a next-gen console for the last six weeks or so. So much so, in fact, that no one's gotten around to writing an FAQ for this wicked awesome game just yet. That's where I come in. All right, let's get right into it. Here's a few important notes before we begin... - This guide is not intended to replace your manual. I'm not going to tell you how to play the game's instruments and I'm not going to describe the various game modes for you. This guide is mainly going to go over the nitty gritty of the game's two key gameplay types, Solo Tour and Band World Tour. If you want to know how to create a character or a new band, READ YOUR MANUAL. Or, better yet, ask one of your friends with the game to show you how. This is a multiplayer game, after all. - This guide is going to need your help if it is to ever get to 100% completion. There are a lot of fiddly unlocking requirements in Band World Tour that are difficult for one man and his roommates to pick apart. After you're done checking the guide over, keep an eye out for any of the sets/venues that I have the question marks ([?]) next to. If you can confirm an unlocking requirement that I have missing, send me an e-mail or Xbox Live message and I'll get 'er up here ASAP. Wow, multiplayer guide writing for a multiplayer game. How meta. II. SOLO TOUR ------------- There are other guides out there that cover the Solo Tour far better than I ever could, and on this website, in fact! I'd definitely recommend checking out out for more info if you're curious. III. BAND WORLD TOUR -------------------- Band World Tour is the meat and potatoes of the game and requires you to have at least two local players kicking around in order to play. Hope you have friends or, at the very least, tolerable roommates. IIIA. MAKING THE BAND --------------------- The process for starting a new band is pretty self-explanatory, but some attention needs to be paid to a couple things that aren't outlined in your manual. - NEW BAND MEMBERS - When you create a new character, most of the things you are choosing for him or her are PERMANENT. Yes, for a game as loose and open and party-themed as Rock Band, the character creation is pretty set in stone. The only two aspects of a new band member you can change after creation are his/her NAME and HAIRSTYLE. Things like hometown, attitude and height/weight are permanent. Choose wisely. - HOMETOWN - Once you have the band members chosen, you'll need to pick a name and hometown. The choice of name is important (you don't want to sound like a jackass on the leaderboards, do you?), but it really isn't relevant to this guide. Hometown, however, IS. You have 12 cities to choose for your band's home city, divided into four groups. U.S. WEST COAST Seattle San Francisco Los Angeles U.S EAST COAST Chicago New York Boston WEST EU London Paris Amsterdam EAST EU Rome Berlin Stockholm Your choice of home city determines the order in which the rest of these cities will unlock to you. This is important for esthetic reasons (hate Rome? start in the U.S.) as well as for determining the speed at which particular songs open up to you, as each city has a few special setlists and the like that it ALWAYS has, regardless of the point at which you unlock it for play. More info on that a bit later. IIIB. TOOLS OF THE TRADE ------------------------ Your band will slowly accumulate a few types of 'currency' as you play songs and advance through the game. Want more info on those? No? Well, you're going to get it anyway. - STARS - These represent your band's general level of 'fame' and are earned the same way they've always been earned in the Guitar Hero series: good performance on songs. You will slowly build these up as you play through the game, no matter what difficulty level you are on. Your current total is always listed at the upper right of the World Map screen. - CITY STARS - An offshoot of regular stars, 'city stars' are simply the number of stars you've earned in a particular city. They count as regular stars, of course, and are tracked in the main tally in the upper right as normal, but they are also used to track your 'fame' in a particular city and are listed on the main Map Screen menu whenever you hover over a city's name in the list. Most venues and a lot of setlists require a certain number of 'city stars' before unlocking, thus requiring you to play a few shows in a city before everything opens up to you. - MONEY - Pay for gigs is doled out by the star. That is, a particular venue will always pay you $X multiplied by the number of stars you received for playing the song/gig. This money can then be spent on clothing and instruments at the Rock Shop, but I wouldn't sweat it too much: if you play the BWT for any extended period of time, you'll eventually earn way more money than you could ever possibly use. As far as the specific payment rates for the game's gigs, A Venues (Small Clubs) seem to always pay $5 per star and B Venues (Big Clubs) appear to always pay $25 per star. As for C Venues, the exact pay depends on whether the venue is considered a Theater or an Arena. The specific breakdown of those two types lies below. THEATERS [$80 per star] Amsterdam (Ranstad Theater) Boston (Hancock Theater) Chicago (Palace Hotel Ballroom) Paris (Le Salle De Bal Royale) Rome (Il Grande Teatro Della Roccia) San Francisco (Bay City Theater) Seattle (The Sealth Theater) Stockholm (Swedisphere Theater) ARENAS [$120 per star] Berlin (Das Krapfentheater) London (Penfold Dome) Los Angeles (Wilshire Forum) Moscow (Dynamite Palace) New York (Empire Square Garden) Reykjavik (Klauragdalsholl) Rio De Janeiro (The Rockacabana) Sydney (Bennelong Opera House) Tokyo (Gorilla Dome) As you can see, the monetary rewards increase considerably once you've opened a few C Venues. Also, an important note: the hardest venue to open in your starting geopgraphical cluster (US West Coast, East EU, et cetera) is always your hometown. Thus, if you want to get to the Arenas easier, DON'T START YOUR BAND IN A CITY WITH AN ARENA (New York, Los Angeles, London, Berlin). - FANS - Ah, fans. So fickle. You'll earn these for successfully completing gigs and lose them for restarting gigs, quitting gigs and (gasp) failing gigs. Fans, like stars, are required to unlock new venues and setlists. Totally *unlike* stars, however, the number of fans you can earn is capped depending on the difficulty level your band plays a particular gig at. Note that your band is tracked at the *lowest* difficulty level being played by any member of the band. So, no, I'm afraid you can't play through the game with an Expert Guitarist and Easy Drummer and think you'll average out around Medium or Hard: since someone's playing on Easy, the whole performance is rated as Easy for the purposes of gaining fans. At any rate, the specific fan caps are... EASY - 260,000 MEDIUM - 600,000 HARD - 1,000,000[?](achievement at 1,000,000) EXPERT - No Limit More info on fan plateaus for unlocking new venues and setlists can be found later on in the guide. IIIC. YOUR BAND'S WORLD --------------------- Your band's world will eventually be made up of twelve core cities and five bonus cities. The setlists available for play in these cities are determined by two factors: the city itself and your band's choice of hometown. Thus, a band that starts in San Francisco will have vastly different songs available for play there than a band that started in London and had to fly over to play there. For the 'ease' of instruction, I've numbered the twelve cities in the game depending on in what order they tend to be unlocked in. To determine the setlists and unlocking requirements for a particular city in your run through of Band World Tour, you'll need to first locate the hometown-determined gigs for that city in the section below, and then look up the special city-specific gigs in the City Gigs section after that. Combining those two lists of gigs will give you the full setlist for that city in your incarnation of Band World Tour and, more importantly, tell you what the unlocking requirements for everything therein are. EXAMPLE I start a new band in Seattle and want to know what will eventually be available for play in its Venue C (The Sealth Theater). Your Hometown is City 1, so checking the Hometown-Determined Gigs section for City 1 shows that Venue C will at least have an All Town Songs set with the four starter songs and a quick one-song playthrough of Run To The Hills that will be available near the end of the game. Fair enough. Going down further, I check the Venue C listings for Seattle: Make a Setlist (Custom 3), Programmer Favorites and an Alternative Marathon. Here's hoping you have tastes similar to the game's programmers. IIID. HOMETOWN-DETERMINED GIGS ----------------------------- You can determine which number a city is fairly easily by matching its Venue A songs with the lists below. Remember, YOUR band's Seattle will likely have a different set of gigs than MY band's Seattle, but both of our City 8s will have *at least* the gigs listed below. Trying to talk to your friend about 'that song you played in Rome last night' will likely just end in heartbreak for everyone. The requirements for unlocking each gig and venue are listed next to their name, and the specific song listings for each extended playlist can be found later on in the guide. Please note that to save space I omitted the 'Roadies' requirement from all C Venues. Just remember: you DO need to snag some Roadies before you can play at a stadium! - CITY 1 (Hometown) - VENUE A Initially Unlocked Say It Ain't So Opens With Venue In Bloom Opens With Venue I Think I'm Paranoid Opens With Venue VENUE B 6 City Stars[?] Mississippi Queen Opens With Venue Battle of the Vans 16 Stars VENUE C 160 Stars, 30 City Stars, 220,000 Fans All Town Songs Opens with Venue Run to the Hills PR Firm, 200 Stars[?] - CITY 2 (Bus)- VENUE A Van Here It Goes Again Opens With Venue Creep Opens With Venue Wave of Mutiliation Opens With Venue VENUE B 6 City Stars Learn to Fly Opens With Venue Tour Bus Showcase 52 Stars VENUE C 100 Stars, 20 City Stars, 52,405 Fans All Town Songs Opens With Venue - CITY 3 (Hard to Please on Easy) - VENUE A Van Should I Stay or Should I Go Opens With Venue Maps Opens With Venue Gimme Shelter Opens With Venue VENUE B 6 City Stars Orange Crush Opens With Venue Upstart Marathon 10 City Stars VENUE C 100 Stars, 20 City Stars, 99,999 Fans All Town Songs Opens With Venue - CITY 4 (Roadies) - VENUE A Bus Blitzkrieg Bop Opens With Venue Black Hole Sun Opens With Venue VENUE B 6 City Stars Are You Gonna Be My Girl Opens With Venue Roadie Rock-Off 80 Stars, 12 City Stars Showstoppers Set 15 City Stars VENUE C 100 Stars, 33 City Stars, 99,999 Fans All Town Songs Opens With Venue - CITY 5 (Plane) - VENUE A Bus Sabotage Opens With Venue When You Were Young Opens With Venue VENUE B 6 City Stars Train Kept A Rollin' Opens With Venue Scenester Set 15 City Stars VENUE C 126 Stars, 12 City Stars, 52,405 Fans Worldwide Showcase Opens With Venue All Town Songs Opens With Venue - CITY 6 (Hard to Please on Medium) - VENUE A Bus, 52,405 Fans Celebrity Skin Opens With Venue Wanted Dead or Alive Opens With Venue VENUE B 6 City Stars, 99,999 Fans Paranoid Opens With Venue Chops Proving Marathon 15 City Stars VENUE C 100 Stars, 33 City Stars, 268,000 Fans All Town Songs - CITY 7 (Sound Guy) - VENUE A Plane The Hand That Feeds Opens With Venue Go With The Flow Opens With Venue VENUE B 6 City Stars Vasoline Opens With Venue Headliner Marathon 15 City Stars Audio Pro Showcase 160 Stars, 15 City Stars VENUE C 20 City Stars, 268,000 Fans All Town Songs Opens With Venue - CITY 8 (Harder to Please on Medium) - VENUE A Plane Epic Opens With Venue Dani California Opens With Venue VENUE B 6 City Stars, 268,000 Fans Cherub Rock Opens With Venue Stage Igniter Marathon 15 City Stars VENUE C 20 City Stars, 468,000 Fans All Town Songs - CITY 9 (Hard to Please on Hard) - VENUE A Plane, 268,000 Fans Main Offender Opens With Venue Welcome Home Opens With Venue VENUE B 6 City Stars, 340,000 Fans Tom Sawyer RAWK-AID Benefit (Custom 3, $0/2xFans) VENUE C 33 City Stars, 468,000 Fans All Town Songs Ultimate Mystery Setlist (Random 5) - CITY 10 (Bodyguards) - VENUE A Plane Dead on Arrival Opens With Venue Electric Version Opens With Venue VENUE B 6 City Stars Detroit Rock City Opens With Venue Almost There Marathon 15 City Stars Security Showcase 200 Stars, 15 City Stars VENUE C 20 City Stars, 268,000 Fans All Town Songs Opens With Venue - CITY 11 (PR Firm) - VENUE A Plane Suffragette City Opens With Venue (Don't Fear) The Reaper Opens With Venue VENUE B 6 City Stars, 99,999 Fans Enter Sandman Opens With Venue Make An Ultimate Selist (Custom 5) 200 Stars, 30 City Stars Public Relations Party 240 Stars, 15 City Stars, 220,000 Fans VENUE C 20 City Stars, 268,000 Fans All Town Songs Opens With Venue RAWK-AID Festival (Custom 5, $0/2xFans) Opens With Venue[?] - CITY 12 (Harder to Please on Hard) - VENUE A Plane, 340,000 Fans Ballroom Blitz Reptilia VENUE B 6 City Stars, 340,000 Fans Next to You World Famous Marathon VENUE C 20 City Stars, 468,000 Fans All Town Songs IIIE. ROAD TO THE HALL OF FAME ------------------------------ Now that you know the basic setlists and gigs available in Band World Tour, I suppose it's about time I told you how to complete the game. 'Winning' the Band World Tour requires you to unlock and play through eight special playlists that represent your band earning items and staff members that are quintessential to life as a successful touring band, culminating in the opportunity to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. A rough outline of these special playlists, their requirements and what they unlock is below. VAN Setlist: Battle of the Vans Requirements: 16 Stars, 6 City 1 Stars[?] Unlocks: The other two cities in your home cluster (Cities 2 and 3) BUS Setlist: Tour Bus Showcase Requirements: 52 Stars, 6 City 2 Stars Unlocks: The other cluster on your home continent (Cities 4, 5 and 6) ROADIES Setlist: Roadie Rock-Off Requirements: 80 Stars, 12 City 4 Stars Unlocks: The ability to play stadium shows (allows unlocking of C-level venues) PLANE Setlist: Worldwide Showcase Requirements: 126 Stars, 12 City 5 Stars, 52,405 Fans Unlocks: All the cities in the game (Cities 7 to 12 and the five bonus cities) SOUND GUY Setlist: Audio Pro Showcase Requirements: 160 Stars, 15 City 7 Stars Unlocks: Required to unlock Bodyguard setlist BODYGUARDS Setlist: Security Showcase Requirements: Sound Guy, 200 Stars, 15 City 10 Stars Unlocks: Required to unlock PR Firm setlist PR FIRM Set List: Public Relations Party Requirements: Bodyguards, 240 Stars, 15 City 11 Stars, 220,000 Fans Unlocks: Unlocks Moscow and Reykjavik, required to unlock Hall of Fame setlist HALL OF FAME Set List: Hall of Fame Induction Requirements: 450 Stars Unlocks: Transparent instruments, achievement, required for Endless Setlist Once you've achieved Hall of Fame Status, you've essentially 'beat' the game, though there's still plenty of stars to earn and fun to be had. Those wishing to 'fully complete' the game (or those just looking for a way to kill six hours) may be interested in the last major challenge the game throws at you after the Hall of Fame Induction is complete: the Endless Setlist. ENDLESS SETLIST Set List: The Endless Setlist Requirements: Hall of Fame Status, 600 Stars Unlocks: Achievement, [?] The Endless Setlist is all 58 songs in the game, back to back to back. You can complete it on Medium, Hard or Expert, and getting through it at all will earn you an achievement. Good luck! IIIG. BONUS CITIES AND FAN PLATEAUS ---------------------------------- You'll note that I mentioned a few cities above that only have one Venue and cannot be chosen as a hometown. Those are the five bonus cities. They have the most difficult songs in the game and are the toughest venues to unlock. They mainly require Fans to unlock, much like some other venues in the game. Thankfully, most such unlocks happen at particular 'tiers' of fans, so you don't need to constantly check your World Map to see if you unlocked something new after a gig in which you earned a ton of fans. The general 'fan tiers' and the venues/gigs they unlock are listed below. 52,405 Fans City 2 and City 5's Venue C, City 6's Venue A 99,999 Fans City 3 and City 4's Venue C, City 6 and City 11's Venue B 220,000 Fans City 1's Venue C, PR Party (and thus, Moscow and Reykjavik) 260,000 Fans EASY FAN CAP 268,000 Fans City 6, 7, 10 and 11's Venue C, City 8's Venue B City 9's Venue A 340,000 Fans Sydney, City 9's Venue B, City 12's Venue A & B 468,000 Fans Rio de Janeiro, City 8, 9 and 12's Venue C, Regular Rotation Set UK Marathon, West Coast Marathon, Chart Toppers Marathon Drum Legend 580,000 Fans Tokyo, Rock Marathon 600,000 Fans MEDIUM FAN CAP 1,000,000 Fans HARD FAN CAP, Achievement, 'Superstar' Mode The 'Superstar' mode listed at 1,000,000 Fans isn't a new gameplay mode or anything, but it is significant enough of a shift in the World Tour that I felt it worth mentioning here. Once you break the 1M fan barrier, the number of fans you earn per gig raises an order of magnitude or two. Once you're at 1,000,000, it is not unheard of to get another 2,000,000 fans from one Arena gig. I've started referring to this as 'Superstar' mode. If you were curious how some of the bands on the leaderboard were getting 100,000,000 fans... that's how. I'd love to add more info on the fan collection formula here, but... well, frankly, no one seems to know how it works just yet. Here's hoping someone cracks that nut in the days to come. IIIH. SETLISTS -------------- This section will eventually contain the make up of every special gig in the game, as I've only listed the titles in the above gig sections. That'll require several hours of transcribing however, so for this initial version, this section is empty. You'll have to just check from within the game for now. IV. DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT ------------------------ Coming in a future update. V. VERSION HISTORY ------------------ Version 0.5 (January 9, 2008) Initial version. Fairly bare bones, but with a lot of our initial Band World Tour research in place. The Solo Tour, Setlist and Downloadable Content sections are currently AWOL, but will be updated as soon as I complete the Solo Tour a third time, among other things. Version 0.51 (September 13, 2008) Added a Theater/Arena breakdown in the Tools of the Trade section. Added some info on 'Superstar' mode to the Fan Plateau section. Added a couple more World Tour unlock requirements. Adjusted the fan cap listing to be in line with their post-patch numbers. VI. CONTRIBUTORS AND SPECIAL THANKS ----------------------------------- - HOW YOU CAN HELP - The main things I need people to look out for are star and fan requirements that I might have missed. Note the requirements listed for a city's gigs when you first open it and check this guide later to see if I'm missing them. If so, contact me! I'll be sure to recognize any such contributions I receive. Thanks in advance! - SPECIAL THANKS - Thanks to my roommate Jeff for assisting in pretty much all of the gameplay required to figure this stuff out and thank you to my other roommate Jesse for buying Rock Band in the first place.
