This version of Ys is reputable for mixing in pre-rendered graphics with traditional tilesets, as well as having (arguably) hideous-looking portraits. An English version of the game was never made, since the game (and computer it was on) was never released outside Japan. This guide will not be providing the story elements inside the game, only what is needed to complete it. If you wish to play the game to understand the story, there are plenty of translated versions available on PC, PC Engine, Nintendo DS, Sony Playstation Portable, and other consoles. Many of the items in-game are presented in English. In one notable instance (The BLUE-KNECKLESS), the item suffers from poor spelling. However, this guide will preserve the spelling of all items to avoid confusion. Anything marked in brackets in the walk-through section [] indicate this is something that was translated. The writer's translation skills are rough at best, and may not represent an entirely accurate translation. =============================================================================== HOW TO PLAY Arrow Keys / Numeric Pad - Move Adol around on the field. - Select options on the command/menu screens. Enter - Execute a command/menu option. - Bring up the menu on the field. Spacebar - Cancel a command/menu option (It behaves like a 'back' button). - Use an item on the field. R - Read a Book of Ys. - This only works once you have obtained [Rea's Glasses] and can translate the language found in the book. You will need this to win the game, at the very least. F1 - DISK LOAD - You will need a dedicated save disk to use this feature. F5 - DISK SAVE You will need a dedicated save disk to use this feature. =============================================================================== GAMEPLAY & COMBAT You can move Adol around using the arrow keys. Access to the menu can happen anytime except when inside a small building and during a boss battle. Adol attacks enemies by (literally) running into them. However, this is not as basic as it sounds. There is strategy to how you run into enemies. A straightforward collision will do damage to both the enemy and yourself. To hit an enemy without taking any damage, you must attack off-centre so the shadows do not line up, or try to catch to them from the side or behind. Equipping weapons and protection will to improve your ability to dish out and reduce incoming damage, improving your odds of survival while navigating the many dangerous places this game has to offer. There are rings scattered through the game which will augment your capabilities and impede what the enemy can do. Keep in mind: The rings are ineffective against bosses. Items can be equipped on the go. To use them, press SPACEBAR. They can be used at any time on the field, except during a boss battle. =============================================================================== MENU & SELECTION Pressing ENTER on the field will open up a menu. You can use the arrow keys to move around and equip your WEAPON, ARMOR, SHIELD and which ITEM you have on the go. You have no control over the items along the right side, but they will be automatically used when it applies. Pressing SPACEBAR will cancel whatever you are doing. In many instances where you have to choose something (Go to Darm Tower, purchase something, etc.), the bottom option is 'yes' and the top one is 'no'. After Sara is no longer available, speaking to Jeba will bring up an option to read the Books. Selecting the bottom option will bring up a list of books you have collected. =============================================================================== TIPS & SUGGESTIONS Save VERY frequently, especially when you are entering an unfamiliar area. You may never know what unexpected surprise may bump into Adol and give you a GAME OVER. Always save before a boss battle. Do not be shy with your items. They may not be cheap, but replacing GOLD is a lot easier than having to backtrack lost quest time. - A HEAL-POTION can keep you alive by restoring all of Adol's health. - A WING is useful to quickly remove Adol from a deadly situation. - A MIRROR can freeze all the enemies around Adol, giving you a chance to finish them off without opposition or escape the area. Using the area in front of the [Shrine] is a great way to build Adol up to level 7 or 8 early on, making the first half of the game a lot easier to play. Be prepared to spend a lot of time along the outer walls of Darm Tower, recovering your health. This can be done faster if you also have the HEAL-RING equipped. She will address Adol by name as ask that you equip yourself with arms and armor. While you have slots for SWORD, ARMOR and SHIELD, you only need to equip two of these slots to trigger the main quest. You will have enough starting GOLD to purchase a SHORT-SWORD and PLATE-MAIL from the [Weapon Store] and [Protection Items Store]. The two stores are located along the bottom-right corner of town. Once you have made your purchases, visit [Sara's Store] and receive the [Crystal]. You will need this before going to [Zepik Village]. NOTES: You must speak to Sara at least twice to trigger the quest (So even if you go to the store and pick up your stuff first, you will still get her request to equip yourself with a weapon and protection). If you do not get the [Crystal] and you spoke to her only once, try again and you should get the next dialogue. If you would like, while you are in Minea, you can speak to the woman along the bottom-left corner of town. She has a boy following behind her. Talking to her will allow you to perform a quest in Zepik Village. Other places to visit in Minea include: - There is a guard tower to the left of the town gate. A guard meets you there when you enter, but you can also climb to the top and find a woman named Rea. Her [Harmonica] is missing. If you wish to complete a quest for her, it can be done later on. - [Pim's Exchange] is located in the mid-left side of town. You can purchase consumable items from him. To equip them, you will need to enter the menu, scroll down (or up) to ITEM and use left and right to select what you want to use. - The bar is located along the mid-right side of town. It provides no real contribution to the main quest, but it does provide some background info on what is going on. From here on, leave town by the north gate and enter the fields. This guide suggests you fight monsters until Adol reaches (at least) least level 3, since this location has the easiest monsters in the whole game, and there is a considerable stat gain between levels 2 and 3 (and all subsequent levels). You may want to consider raising enough funds to purchase any missing equipment, though it will push Adol close to level 4 in the process. If you are having trouble with taking too much damage, try to attack the monsters vertically instead of horizontally and aim to be off-centre so you will score your hits without taking damage. After Adol has reached (at least) level 3, cross the bridge along the right side, and continue right until you reach [Zepik Village]. NOTES: Be sure to save your game VERY frequently and do not hesitate to retreat if you are in trouble. It would take very little to slip up and instantly lose all your health, especially when you enter a new, unfamiliar area. =============================================================================== NOTABLE DIFFERENCES Pim's Exchange does not carry the Sapphire Ring, nor are there items scattered throughout the game you can sell to him. You will have to grind for all your GOLD. Since there is no Sapphire Ring, the bar is merely an info dump place and does not contribute to gameplay. Pim's Exchange also serves as the hospital/clinic for this version. You can purchase the HEAL-POTION from him. The field, even by pre-Eternal standards, is quite small. The mine entrance is positioned along the north-east corner (and you cannot enter it until you are ready to retrieve the 3rd book). Y Y SSSS__________________________________________________________________ Y Y S Y ____ SSS -- Chapter 2: Zepik Village -- (C02) Y S__________________________________________________________________ Y SSSS =============================================================================== CHECKLIST [Jeba's House] [ ] [Shrine Key] =============================================================================== QUEST INFO There is little to do in the village, but there are two places to visit. For the main quest, you should visit [Jeba's House] which is the open door on the far right. If you have the [Crystal] with you, she will recognize you as the warrior Sara spoke of and give you the [Shrine Key] so you can open the front door to the [Shrine]. If you spoke to the woman pointed out in Chapter 1, you can talk to the [Village Leader] (Open door in the middle of the village) and he will speak of the missing [Silver Bells] and ask Adol to recover them. If you did not speak to the woman, he will dismiss Adol since you do not have any business being there. You can leave the village by exiting to the right and traveling through a winding forest heading up. The next screen over you will stand over a cliff with water ahead of you. To the right is [Thief Leader's Lodge], which serves no purpose until much later in the game, so head left toward the [Shrine]. One thing you will note is the abundance of monsters which patrol this area. This is a good place to build up Adol's level and stock up on GOLD to purchase items and better equipment, if you wish. This guide suggests you should raise Adol's level to at least 5, but 6-8 in very possible at this point. The higher the level Adol is at, the easier it will be to survive the [Shrine]. NOTE: While at level 4-5, the enemies can do a fair amount of damage to your character. If you need to retreat, simply head down along the small walkway. The monsters will be unable to follow you and can easily recover your HP until you are ready to fight again. When you are ready, cross the bridge and fight the two guards. They look similar to the regular monsters you were facing, but they are much faster, hit harder and require more hits to bring down. A lot of enemies from this point on have two versions; the slower, regular ones and the faster, more dangerous counterparts. Unlock and open the door, then try to open the next door above. This will trigger your first boss fight. =============================================================================== BOSS FIGHT #1: JENOCRES HP: 500 Experience: 777 Recommended Level: 5+ Recommended Equipment: Short Sword, Plate Mail, Small Shield The walls along the left and right sides will shoot flame attacks that extend and retract, making navigating most of the room difficult. Amidst the flames, a robed figure will phase in and out. STRATEGY: The top and bottom areas of the room are safe, so play it carefully and wait until he appears in a spot where you can safely attack and not get hit by the flames. Even at minimum recommendation, it is possible to defeat this boss with some patience. Once defeated, the door will open and you can enter the [Shrine]. =============================================================================== NOTABLE DIFFERENCES Zepik Village is smaller. The big difference seems to be in the mayor, who is now the [Village Leader]. This person no longer immediately opens up to Adol upon visiting and now requires him to know of the specific problem so you can approach with business in mind. The Shrine entrance is much different. Instead of navigating a maze, you jump straight into your first boss fight before entering the shrine. The crater that Ys once rested in is filled with water, instead of a forest. Why it is filled with water, who knows... Y Y SSSS__________________________________________________________________ Y Y S Y ____ SSS -- Chapter 3: Shrine -- (C03) Y S__________________________________________________________________ Y SSSS =============================================================================== CHECKLIST [Jeba's House] [ ] [Ivory Key] [Village Leader's House] [ ] POWER-RING [Shrine], 1st Level [ ] MAIL-RING [ ] MASK OF EYES [Shrine], 2nd Level [ ] [Prison Key] [ ] [Silver Bells] [ ] [Treasure Chest Key] [Shrine], 3rd Level [ ] HEAL-POTION [ ] [Marble Carved Key] [ ] SILVER-SHIELD [ ] [Book of Ys, Hadal Volume] =============================================================================== QUEST INFO On the 1st level, every door and chest is locked, so stay on the far left side and head down to the 2nd level. Keep walking down (past the stairs), then turn right. Head up through the archway (by the aqua statue) and collect the [Prison Key]. Double-back, go right and go through the 2nd archway (by another aqua statue). Head up, go through the right archway and there will be a fork with multiple paths that all head up. Walk up the 2nd path from the right. Follow it all the way around and collect the [Treasure Chest Key]. Head back to the fork and go up the 2nd path from the left. Go around, turn down and collect the [Silver Bells]. Make your way back up to the 1st level. Go to the very top-right corner of the level and use the [Prison Key] to free the girl named Feena. She will head back to [Zepik village] on her own. There are two items you can pick up on the 1st level while you are here: - Go to the very bottom-right corner and collect a MAIL-RING. Equipping this ring will improve your defense, and since this is (likely) your first ring pickup, there is no reason not to equip it. - Head left from there and stay along the very bottom as best you can until there is only one path which heads up. Follow it and collect the MASK OF EYES. Equipping this will render all enemies invisible, but it will also show hidden paths. Sometime after you free Feena and before you travel to the meet the first boss, you will have to return to [Zepik Village]. Enter [Jeba's House] and Feena will give you the [Ivory Key], one of two keys required to get to the first book. If you have undertaken the quest to get the [Silver Bells], you can now return them to the [Village Leader] who will reward you with a POWER-RING. Equipping this ring with make your attacks hit a lot harder. You may also want to return to [Minea Town] and get some better equipment. The enemies in the [Shrine], 3rd Level are faster and tougher. In the [Shrine], return to the fork in the 2nd level and take the path on the very far right. Loop around and go down to the 3rd level. The music changes and the enemies here are more difficult. Head down toward the middle of the room, then to the bottom-right corner to loop around. You will come across a gold statue. These will warp you to different locations. Do not use the first gold statue you come across just yet. Head past it, go up and over and use the another gold statue to warp. Make your way through there and pick up the SILVER-SHIELD near the end of that stretch. Continue on until you find a gold statue to warp back to where you were before. Now, double-back to the first gold statue you encountered and warp. Head through the archway and over to the aqua statue. When the coast is clear, equip the MASK OF EYES and proceed through the hidden passageway. Once you are through, unequip it immediately. There is a gold statue above you, but do not use it yet. Head down and go along the winding path until you reach a gold statue on the far right. Warp to the next room, head up and collect the [Marble Carved Key]. Make your way back to where you used the MASK OF EYES to reveal the hidden path. When the coast is clear, equip the mask again and travel through the hidden path. Head left and up to pick up a HEAL-POTION. (If you already have one, this will give Adol a full health restore). Head back to the hidden path again and use the MASK OF EYES to get through there. Head up and use the gold statue to warp to the boss' lair. Head left (You will be walking for a while), then head up. Use the [Ivory Key] and [Marble Carved Key] to open the doors and head up to the third door to trigger the next boss fight. =============================================================================== BOSS FIGHT #2: NYGTILGER HP: 600 Experience: 1212 Recommended Level: 7+ Recommended Equipment: LONG-SWORD, CHAIN-MAIL, SILVER-SHIELD Nygtilger bobs in and out of the water while chasing you around in a very awkward manner. Nygtilger is vulnerable while surfaced and can easily damage you while submerged. STRATEGY: Even at a high level, this one will take a while. Time your attacks to hit only while it's head is above water, and evade while it is submerged. Like the previous boss, patience is your greatest weapon. After the boss has been defeated, you can go through the door above to collect the 1st [Book of Ys]. =============================================================================== NOTABLE DIFFERENCES The shrine layout is nearly identical to the traditional layout, though there is a little bit of re-arranging on the 3rd floor. The big difference is the placement of items, since the first floor was completely removed. Also, Feena does not have the Mask of Eyes beside her. That is located in a different chest on the same floor. Y Y SSSS__________________________________________________________________ Y Y S Y ____ SSS -- Chapter 4: Abandoned Mine -- (C04) Y S__________________________________________________________________ Y SSSS =============================================================================== CHECKLIST [Minea Town] [ ] [Book of Ys, Toba Volume] [ ] TIMER-RING Field [ ] SILVER-SWORD [Abandoned Mine], 1st Level [ ] [Darm Key] [ ] [Harmonica] [ ] HEAL-POTION [ ] SILVER-ARMOR [Abandoned Mine], 2nd Level [ ] [Book of Ys, Dabi Volume] [ ] HEAL-POTION [ ] HEAL-RING [ ] [Roda Seed] =============================================================================== QUEST INFO Return to [Minea Town] (either the hard way or use a WING) and head to [Sara's shop]. You will find out something has happened to her and you are given instructions to seek out the next [Book of Ys] in the [Abandoned Mine]. You will also be given the 2nd [Book of Ys] while you are there. NOTES: Any further attempts to enter the store will meet with Adol not entering and a comment saying she is not there. While you are in town, you may wish to upgrade your equipment and get the best of whatever you can afford. It will come in handy for the next part of the game: The [Abandoned Mine]. When you are ready, leave town and head to the top-right corner in the field. Enter the open door and proceed into the [Abandoned Mine]. You may notice, like the [Shrine], that HP does not automatically regenerate. This is a consistent issue with indoor environments. There is also the problem that you can barely see one character height ahead of you, making it easy for monsters to ambush you. Be extra cautious while moving through the mines, especially if Adol is still below level 8. To obtain all the items in the 1st level, follow this path: - Head straight down to the first junction and turn left. - Follow that path and continue heading left and down when you can, ignoring the next junction. You should come across a HEAL-POTION. - Backtrack to the junction and keep going right, then down. You will see a cave mouth. Ignore it, since it leads back to the entrance. - Head down and follow the winding path around. You will come across a large, very visible pit. Go across the bridge and out of the pit. - Follow the path around until you see a cave mouth above you. Go through it, defeat the two super monsters (Go at them from the side for your best chance) and open the chest containing the SILVER-ARMOR (Make sure you equip it!). - Head out of the small room and keep going right. Ignore the option to go up at the next junction (Leads to the dead end) and enter the next cave mouth on the right. - Head up and you will come across a 4-way junction. Turn right and follow that path until you see two cave mouths. - Enter the cave mouth on the right and follow it all the way up, opening the chest for the [Harmonica]. - Backtrack and go through the cave mouth on the left side, following the path around to the 4-way junction again. Go left and follow it up up to the cave mouth. You will see another cave mouth (which does down to the 2nd level), but do not go through it yet. Keep going right and you will see the last box for this floor: It contains the [Darm Key]. At this point, you can proceed down to the 2nd level, or you can head back to [Minea Town] and complete a small quest. You will need to enter the guard tower and go up to the next level. Speak to the woman, Rea, who will thank you for returning her [Harmonica] and will give you the TIMER-RING in return. Equipping this ring will slow down regular monsters, making even the fast ones move at around your speed. It is handy in the mine, but it is far more useful later on. To obtain all the items in the 2nd level of the [Abandoned Mine], follow this path: - Follow the very long path down, to the right, through the large pit, head down, keep going down, ignore the junction to go left, and go all the way to the very bottom on the tunnel. The chest contains a HEAL-RING (Which you will likely need if you have been making a single run, by now). Equip it when you need it and watch Adol's health quickly return to full. - Head back up to the junction you skipped, and turn left. Before you go too far, there is a cave mouth right below you can enter which goes into a large room. Along the left side, there are three cave mouths, one guarded by two monsters. - Take them out and go through the middle cave mouth first, then open the chest containing a [Roda Seed]. If you want the SILVER-SWORD for the next boss battle, now is a good time to head out of the [Abandoned Mine] and back out into the field. Just outside the entrance to [Zepik Village] you should see a much larger tree (Well, the tree roots). Approach it with the [Roda Seed] in your inventory and Adol will communicate with the tree, who in turn will give Adol the SILVER-SWORD. From there, re-trace your steps back inside the mines until you get to the large room in the 2nd level. - Head out of the room and go through the cave mouth on the right side, going up the path and turning left at the junction (Right leads to a dead end). - Eventually, you see an open path below you. Follow the tunnel down and around, ignoring the door and go to the end of the tunnel for a HEAL-POTION. - Head back to the door and use the [Darm Key] to open it. Head up and through the cave mouth for another boss battle. =============================================================================== BOSS #3: VAGULLION HP: 900 Experience: 2345 Recommended Level: 9+ Recommended Equipment: TARWARL, SILVER-ARMOR, SILVER-SHIELD Vagullion attacks by splitting into a number of small bats that stalk you in the room. After a few seconds, the bats will clump together and will either reform into the boss or split up again to stalk you. The time the boss is reformed is the only time it is vulnerable to attack. STRATEGY: In most versions of Ys, Vagullion is (arguably) the most difficult boss in the entire game. Fortunately, this does not apply to the SHARP version. The bats are not very fast and it should not be a challenge to stay ahead of them. Given the short of length of time Vagullion is vulnerable to attack, you should try to stay close to the bats so when they reform, you can do as much damage as possible. You can attack Vagullion from any direction, but take care when you do attack. You must constantly be on the move while attacking the boss, or else you will take considerable damage. Even changing directions while hitting it can harm you. After Vagullion has been defeated, collect the third [Book of Ys], then make your way out of the dungeon. =============================================================================== NOTABLE DIFFERENCES The [Abandoned Mine] is the biggest re-write in the game. They changed the layout to two floors, re-arranged where all the items are, plus what enemies you fight. They limited the monster count to the sword-wielding goons and smaller gargoyles, plus their equivalent super versions. The large 'pits' with the bridges are normally a place where you can recover health. This was not included in the SHARP version. With all the gold acquired in the mine, it should be possible, by now. You will need them at some point. - If you want all the rings, complete the quests for Rea (TIMER-RING) and the [Village Leader] (POWER-RING). The Timer Ring will be very useful in Darm Tower, since it slows down the monsters, making them easy to avoid. - Stock up on a MIRROR and HEAL-POTION, if you do have one yet. They can prevent a GAVE OVER in a pinch. Do not bother with purchasing a WING. You will not be holding onto one for very long. - You will need to speak to Jema after collecting the first three books. Head through Zepik Village and towards the cliff side, turning right instead of left. NOTES: If everything has an orange glow, including the water, you have done what is needed to enter Darm Tower. Enter the [Thief Leader's Lodge] and speak to Gouban. He will be informed of the situation and allow to proceed to Darm's Tower, if you wish. If you select "Yes" and have a WING, he will remove it from your inventory. This is now the point of no return. You will enter Darm Tower and be stuck there until the end of the game. NOTES: If you know, inside and out, how to play through Darm Tower on any normal version of Ys, then you are done with this guide. The X68000 physical layout and item placement are identical to the standard layout. There are a few things you should watch out for: - TARWARL, REFLEX and LARGE SHIELD can not be obtained in the Darm Tower. - Monsters tend to be fast and great at ruining your HP. Make sure to always enter a tower floor with full HP as a precaution (and regularly save your game). - The gargoyle statues protecting the SILVER-SHIELD are insanely powerful and also give you huge experience if you manage to kill any (or all) of them. - The path to where Rea is held captive is protected by fast-moving monsters that appear in droves and will even enter the captive chamber. Be prepared to use a HEAL-POTION, MIRROR, or re-load your game lots of times to make it through there alive. - To read the books at the end, you must press "R" to open the page then cycle through all the books. If you are not entirely familiar with what to do in Darm Tower, stick with this guide and it will get you through. Welcome to Darm Tower. It is (quite literally) the second half of the game. You will meet lots of monsters, few allies and obtain the last three books here. FLOOR 1 - Start with heading right, skipping the first staircase and going up the second set. Go around the outside of the tower and enter the next door. NOTES: Darm Tower will consist of alternating between the inside and outside. You can recover HP along the outside walls, and there are no encounters. Be sure to take advantage of this at all times, especially as you climb up the tower. While outside, you can walk wither left or right to reach the opposite door. FLOOR 2 - Head down and around, defeating the two guards blocking the archway. Go inside and collect the items. The one you need is the EVIL-RING in the upper-right chest. Do not equip this unless the guide tells you to. It will quickly drain your life. - The upper-left chest is empty. In most other versions, this would contain a TARWARL if you did not have one. - If you did not pick up a HEAL-POTION and MIRROR, you can collect them from the far left and far right chests. If you did, you could save them for later. Double-back and make your way to FLOOR 1 again. FLOOR 1 - Take the 1st set of stairs up and loop around. FLOOR 3 - There is nothing to do on this floor for now, so take the path around and up the next set of stairs. FLOOR 4 - The layout is similar to FLOOR 3, but with a detour you can take up the middle. Since the game does not give you equipment you should have purchased, it is a dead end with a treasure chest monster, hungry to attack you. - Head up the stairs along the far upper-right corner. FLOOR 5 - There are two sets of stairs heading up. You can ignore the first set of stairs. FLOOR 6 (1st stairs) - Ultimately, this is a dead end. Most other versions, the LARGE SHIELD could be found here, if you did not have it already. FLOOR 6 (2nd stairs) - You will spring a enchanted trap and be captured (Plus lose all your silver equipment). DUNGEON (1st Floor) - Equip the best weapons and armor you currently have (Which should be the TARWARL, REFLEX and LARGE SHIELD) and speak to the other captive in the upper left corner. After a while a big guy busts through the wall on the upper right corner. Speak to him before you leave and obtain [Raba's Idol]. - Leave the dungeon, head right and go up the stairs. FLOOR 1 - Raba is hiding on FLOOR 3. Make your way back up there. Watch out for the monsters. They will be harder to defeat with your weaker equipment. FLOOR 3 - Along the bottom wall with the row of gargoyle statues, equip the MASK OF EYES and look for an opening around the middle an enter it. NOTES: There are nine statues along the bottom. The door is between #4 and #5, counting from the left. - Walk along to bottom of the room and speak to the old man. He will re- claim his idol and give you a BLUE-KNECKLESS which will protect you from the trap on FLOOR 6. NOTES: You can do this with the mask equipped, so you do not need to go through the hassle of equipping, un-equipping and re-equipping it again. Just keep in mind, he stands along the wall. - Head out and make your way back up to FLOOR 6. FLOOR 6, (2nd Stairs) - Equip the BLUE-KNECKLESS before you do anything else and walk into the room. NOTES: The trap is on full-time, but equipping the BLUE-KNECKLESS will allow you to pass through it without any trouble. If you ever go through it without the BLUE-KNECKLESS equipped, you will be captured again and lose whatever silver equipment you have re-acquired. - Continue on and up the stairs. FLOOR 7 - There is a staircase to your left which heads up to FLOOR 8, but we will be collecting an important item from the floor first; The SILVER-SWORD. Head all the way to the left. NOTES: Dogi is in the room above if you want to talk to him, but it is not necessary to continue the quest. - Head down and to the right, then up through the archway. Walk right, then up into a small room where the SILVER-SWORD is. - Double-black and go up the stairs mentioned earlier. FLOOR 8 - There are no enemies on this floor, so make sure you are at full HP before entering. - There is a staircase along the upper-right which heads up to FLOOR 9, but there is a boss to defeat, first. Head right, down, then walk all the way to the far end, up the archway, then through another archway. Walk into the large room and try to enter the door above to trigger a boss battle. =============================================================================== BOSS FIGHT #5: PICTIMOS HP: 999 Experience: 3872 Recommended Level: M Recommended Equipment: SILVER-SWORD, REFLEX, LARGE-SHIELD Pictimos strafes left to right while throwing scythe blades at your position. This boss throws four of them, one at a time. Each blade will spin toward you, hover for a couple seconds, then fly back. Rinse and repeat. STRATEGY: Pictimos only moves left and right along the top of the screen. The best time to attack is while all four blades are visible on the screen and are not moving. The blades will do a 'lot' of damage if they come into contact with you. It does not really matter if you stay far or close to the boss, since you will still need to close the gap to attack while the blades are away. It is important to stay on the move as Pictimos will throw blades at you while the others are being retrieved. NOTES: If you are having difficulty staying alive during this fight, you could detour to FLOOR 9 and retrieve the SILVER-SHIELD early. After Pictimos is defeated, go through the door and collect the [Book os Ys] and the HAMMER. =============================================================================== NOTABLE DIFFERENCES Only minor differences exist between this version and the usual Darm Tower layout, mostly with the monsters and the chest that attacks you. The 3rd-level equipment can not be picked up while in the tower, making it vital to purchase them before entering. You can actually remove the EVIL-RING if you equip it without the BLUE-KNECKLESS. Y Y SSSS__________________________________________________________________ Y Y S Y ____ SSS -- Chapter 6: Darm Tower, Pt.2 -- (C06) Y S__________________________________________________________________ Y SSSS =============================================================================== CHECKLIST Darm Tower, 9th floor [ ] SILVER-SHIELD Darm Tower, 14th floor [ ] [Book of Ys, Jenma Volume] [ ] ROD ============================================================================== QUEST INFO Leave the large room and double back to the exit on the far-right side of the room (It has a staircase in front of it). FLOOR 9 - Go through the archway on the left side and continue heading left, down and then right. Ignore the path heading down and keep going right, then head up and over, defeat the two guards blocking the archway. NOTES: You should save your game before proceeding. - Go up through the archway and open the chest for the SILVER-SHIELD. - Do your best to either deal with or escape the gargoyle statues. They are fast, even with a TIMER RING equipped and will quickly wreck your health if they are not taken care of. It is possible to defeat them if you lucky enough to attack them off-centre. It will take some time, but they can be defeated and they yield an incredible amount of experience. If you did not have 99,999EXP before, you do now. - Double-back and go through the bottom path and through the door. - Head left, then up the stairs. FLOOR 10 - Head down, then left and move until the hallway ends. There are two directions you can go, but head up first and up the stairs. - Head right and count five pillars. In front of the fifth pillar, equip the HAMMER and use it to smash a hole through it (This destroys another trap in the tower). Head back in the same door you came out of and down the stairs. Continue heading down, take the left path, keep moving down, right, through the archway and up the stairs. - The next room would be extremely dangerous had you not destroyed that one pillar with your HAMMER. Now it is safe to enter. Head all the way to the far right and go up the stairs. FLOOR 12 - Do not worry about the numbering. You skipped FLOOR 11, since for now, it is not necessary. Head down through the archway, go left and loop around, through the next archway below you. Go left, then up and up the stairs. FLOOR 13 - This is the first of two floors with mirrors that warp you around to different places. For now, you cannot use them. You will need an specific item in your inventory. You can speak to Raba and he will mention some sort of rod is needed. - Head up the stairs along the far upper-left corner. FLOOR 14 - There are no enemies on this floor, so make sure you are at full HP before entering. - Follow the winding hallway until you enter a large room with a door at the other end. Touch the door to trigger a boss battle. =============================================================================== BOSS FIGHT #6: KHONSCLARD HP: 999 Experience: 6666 Recommended Level: M Recommended Equipment: SILVER-SWORD, REFLEX, SILVER-SHIELD Khonsclard looks like a giant blue-ish rock with a red gem in the middle. It slowly follows you around in the room while firing off smaller rocks in a clockwise manner. Sometimes there are gaps in the field of fire, which complicate trying to predict where the firing angle is. STRATEGY: This battle can either take forever or be done and over with very quickly. To quickly resolve this fight, stay very close to the boss and try to time your attacks so you are hitting it while it is shooting in the opposite direction so by the time you are on the other side, so is it's attack. After defeating this boss, go through the door above and pick up the 5th [Book of Ys] and the ROD. =============================================================================== NOTABLE DIFFERENCES Aside from the monsters, there is next to nothing in differences. They kept the reproduction of this part of the tower faithful. Return back to the room with all the mirrors. FLOOR 13 - With the Rod, you can finally warp between mirrors. There are two objectives in this room: The SILVER-ARMOR and the exit. - To get the SILVER-ARMOR, head to the bottom-right corner, under the archway and enter the mirror on the right end. Head all the way down, through an archway, through another archway (on the left side), down and through another archway (ignore the mirror above you), through (yet) another archway, walk left and into the mirror. Walk left, down under the archway and into the mirror. Follow the single path to the next mirror, cross, defeat the tough guards and claim the SILVER-ARMOR (They will not move until you are right next to them, so you can use the HEAL-RING to recover HP, if you need to). Enter the mirror above to be taken back to the beginning. - To get to the next floor, follow the above instructions until you are told to ignore a mirror. You will want to enter that one. You will be warped between two mirrors. Enter the one on the right. After the next warp, enter the mirror right above you (Do not walk anywhere, just take the mirror above you). Head right, then up both sets of stairs. FLOOR 15 & 16 - Head all the way down through an archway below you that is hard to notice, stay on the left side and keep heading down (ignoring the open chest), until you come across a chest with the BATTLE-SHIELD inside. Head back up, then go through the archway and up the stairs (You are technically on Floor 16, now). Head left then down and around. You will come across a junction. Heading up will take you to Floor 17, but you will want to head down, first. There is someone you will need to speak to. Follow the path to the right. NOTES: You may want to save your game before proceeding any further. This next area can be very taxing on Adol's health bar. - Go through the open doorway and follow the linear path around, taking out and dodging those purple shadow monsters along the way. Before you can go through the locked door, you will need to equip both the BLUE-KNECKLESS and the EVIL-RING. The door will open for you and can enter and speak to Rea, who was captured. After some conversation, she will give you [Rea's Glasses]. This item will let you read the [Book of Ys] (Which you can do anytime now by pressing the "R" key) and you will have to read all six books before you can win the game. - Try to use the HEAL-RING while you can, though keep in mind enemies can still enter the captive room. When you at full health, try to lure enemies to larger areas, then make your escape. Engaging this beings in large groups can be hazardous to your health. - Proceed through the open doorway and double-back to the junction, working your way up the stairs. FLOOR 17 - This floor has a very long, narrow tunnel. You can only engage enemies from the front, making this tunnel very dangerous to Adol's health. If you come across a large group of enemies, you may want to retreat and lead them around the entrance, then go back into the tunnel and hope there are no more than a couple of them in your path. Quickly detour up the first chance you can to collect a HEAL-POTION, then head back down and keep going left, until you can head up some stairs and proceed to the next floor. FLOOR 18 - Head right the first chance you can, down an archway, left again, up and across a staircase. FLOOR 19 - Follow the linear path around and collect the contents of a chest: The BATTLE-ARMOR. No need to worry about the gargoyle statues; they will not come to life and attack you. Head back the way you came. FLOOR 18 - Head down as far as you can, then turn left and keep on going, then head up along the 2 flights of stairs. FLOOR 20 NOTES: You may want to save your game, just in case... - Cautiously make your way around the linear path until a wall explodes and monsters come pouring out. There are too many to try and take on, so retreat back to the entrance. If you took any damage, recover your HP, then re-enter to find only a couple scattered monsters around. Now they are much easier to handle. Go through the opening the monsters made and evade the ones that are in there while going for the chest containing a FLAME-SWORD. Quickly make your way back out, then proceed right and up the next flight of stairs. FLOOR 21 - This is the 2nd of two floors that feature mirrors you can warp between. Since you already have the ROD, you can start immediately. - Head into the first mirror. Go down into the archway on the far right and follow the linear path into the next mirror. You will land in a room between two mirrors. Take the one on the left side. Ignore the mirror behind you in the next room and head down and around until you see the next mirror. Make sure you are at full health before you proceed. This will trigger the next boss battle. =============================================================================== BOSS FIGHT #7: YOGLEKS and OMULGUN HP: 999 Experience: 3000 Recommended Level: M Recommended Equipment: FLAME-SWORD, BATTLE-ARMOR, BATTLE-SHIELD Yogleks and Omulgun are two floating heads surrounded by flames. You must strike the red head to do any damage, but as you hit, the two heads quickly switch places. As you do more damage, the number of flames surrounding them start to decrease until they eventually run out and can be easily defeated. STRATEGY: The flames can hurt if you stand in them for too long, so it is important to avoid all contact. You can move along the very bottom of the screen safely, avoiding all flames. The same cannot be said about the top of the screen, so be careful along there. The easiest way to take out the red head is to maintain a position along the bottom-right or bottom-left corner and attack just as the head is starting to move away from you, then quickly
retreat back to the corner before the flames or blue head hit you.
Once they are down to three flames, instead of retreating, move all the
way through, then carefully make your way to the bottom of the screen and
repeat. After they are down to two of less flames, it becomes a lot easier
to beat.

that different from the traditional layout.

QUEST INFO
We are almost done. With Yogleks and Omulgun out of the way, nothing will stop
you from reaching the top floor. Head through the door on the left and make
your way up the stairs. Walk into the door at the top... to find out it's
blocked. You need a special item to break the barrier and confront the being
responsible for hoarding the final book.
To do this, however, you will have travel back down to the tower. Head back to
the boss' lair and go through the door on the right. Go through the archway in
the upper-left and down 1st archway to the left, after that. Keep going until
you can enter a mirror. Once you go in, head to the right, go up and to the
far left, entering the next mirror you come across. This will place you near
the entrance the floor.
You will have to head all the way back down to Floor 11. Most of the route is
linear, but there are a few things to note.
- FLOOR 17: Watch the long tunnel along the far right side. Monsters tend to
populate that area. If you have to, lead as many as you can to the bottom
of the room, then make a run for it.
- FLOOR 13: To get back to the main entrance, go through the mirror at the
bottom of the stairs, head up and enter the mirror at the very top. Between
the two mirrors, enter the one on the left, walk to the far left, go down
and left again, enter the 1st mirror you see and you will be back to the
floor's front entrance.
Go all the way past the room which could harm you and down to Floor 10. Do not
go all the way to the entrance, but go up at the junction and climb the stairs.
This will take you to the same place where you used the HAMMER to break a
pillar. Continue on and enter Floor 11
FLOOR 11
- Find and speak to Luther Gemma. He will give you the BLUE-AMULET, which
will break the seal on the door at the top of the tower.
Now you can re-trace all your steps and climb all the way back to the top of
the tower. Go through the door.
FLOOR 25
- Make sure you have saved your game, your health is at full and you are
equipped with the SILVER-SWORD, SILVER-ARMOR and SILVER-SHIELD (Dark Fact is
vulnerable only to that equipment lineup). Step on the emblem on the floor
to engage in conversation with Dark Fact and commence the final battle of
the game.
===============================================================================
BOSS FIGHT #8: DARK FACT
HP: 999
Experience: 0
Recommended Level: M
Recommended Equipment: SILVER-SWORD, SILVER-ARMOR, SILVER-SHIELD
Dark Fact quickly moves around the room while fireballs approach and split into
multiple smaller balls that can cause serious harm. To top it all off, every
time you hit Dark Fact, a piece of the floor disappears. After a while, this
will start to limit where you can move.
STRATEGY:
The more times you have to hit Dark Fact, the less room you have to move
around, and you have to hit him a LOT, so it becomes quite easy to get
trapped. Try to setup your attacks so you are hitting him in the same
direction he is moving, that way you can do as much damage in an attack as
you can, reducing the number of times a floor tile is removed.
It becomes a race to keep your health meter above his.
Once Dark Fact is defeated, you will automatically receive the final [Book of
Ys]. It seems like there is nothing else to do, but to win the game, you must
read all the volumes. Hit the "R" key which will bring up a list of Ys
Volumes. Go through them all and this will trigger the end sequence.

*******************************************************************************
Thank for you reading through this guide. I was not expecting the number of odd
differences between this version of Ys and the many others I have played
through.
Trying to figure out how to obtain the POWER-RING had me stumped for a while.
It was through shear accident I managed to stumble on a change in the [Village
Leader's] dialogue and started narrowing down how I got that change to occur,
which eventually lead me to the woman in the bottom corner of Minea with the
kid tagging along behind her. I tested this multiple times without any
problems, so I am certain this NPC is the trigger.
Another thing that caught me by surprise was the lack of equipment in the lower
floors of Darm Tower. At first, I merely assumed they chests were empty
because I already had the stuff, but then it occurred to me; I 'should' be
certain of this, rather than assume. I did a quick run-through with a high-
level character I already built up and saved (Comes in handy when checking
stuff) and did a quick run-through with minimal equipment + the silver
equipment. When I went through Darm Tower, I noticed the chests were still
empty, even though I missing the good stuff. I was like, "Wow, they really did
cut corners with this version"... The lack of "Buy & Sell" with items was bad
enough...
If you find anything glaringly wrong with this guide, feel feel to drop me a
line a let me know.
