It contains strategies for KOing Doc, a list of FAQs, and a mini-review. ******************************************************************************* II. Getting Started Press A on the Title Screen to go to the Mode Selection Screen. Select a mode by pointing at it with the Wiimote and pressing A. Initially only Warm-Up and Training will be available, after beating BOTH of these modes, you'll unlock Sparring. ******************************************************************************* III. Game Modes Note: Special Thanks go to KainHighwind1 and PaulaSchaeffer for their message board postings on how to earn stars! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A. Warm-Up ............................................................................... Overview Warm-Up is the easy difficulty level, Doc is not that aggressive, will not use his Star Punch, and won't use his candy bars to regain stamina. You only have to knock Doc down once to win while you get three. If you press the - button between a round you'll regain health, you can only do this once. If on your "final" knockdown (when the camera switches to the front view), you can save yourself by rapidly drumming the Wiimote and Nunchuk. ............................................................................... Telegraphs "Uhh...Dodge!" Dodge to the left when he says "dodge" then hit him in the face with six jabs. (To earn a Star, hit Doc with a left jab as he gets to the 'o' in dodge.) "Block this!" Hold up to block his jab, then counter with six jabs. (To earn a Star, hit Doc with a right body blow as soon as he finishes the phrase.) "Duck this one!" Hold down to duck his attack, then counter with six jabs. (To earn a Star, hit Doc with a right jab after he finishes the phrase.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. Training ............................................................................... Overview Training is a bit harder than Warm-Up. Doc will occasionally throw a Star Punch and will use his candy bar to recover stamina the first time his health gets low. In Training, you can no longer "save" yourself from your final knockdown. ............................................................................... Telegraphs "Uhh...Dodge!" Dodge to the left when he says "dodge" then hit him in the face with five jabs. (To earn a Star, hit Doc with a left jab as he gets to the 'o' in dodge.) "Duck this one!" Hold down to duck his attack, then counter with five jabs. (To earn a Star, hit Doc with a right jab after he finishes the phrase.) "Come on!" Immediately dodge left, then counter with THREE jabs. (To earn a Star, hit Doc with a left jab as he finishes the phrase.) "Get low!" Wait for Doc to flash, then hold down to duck under his attack. Counter with five jabs. (To earn a Star, hit Doc with a right body blow after he finishes the phrase.) "Keep em up!" Hold up to block BOTH of Doc's punches, then counter with five jabs. Doc will usually do this after a pause. (To earn a Star, you need to hit Doc with a left body blow as soon as he says keep.) Eats Candy Doc will eat a candy bar the first time his health gets low. Eating candy restores Doc's health to full. There is no way to prevent him from eating the bar in Training Mode. Earns Star Sometimes Doc will throw a quick jab that earns him a Star. This attack is next to impossible to avoid, but does very little damage. "I invented the Star Punch!" Usually right after Doc earns a Star, he'll use it. As soon as he starts talking, you must dodge left or you'll be flattened! If you are quick, you can hit him with a right jab after he misses and get in a couple of licks. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- C. Sparring ............................................................................... Overview Sparring must be unlocked by first beating Warm-Up and Training. In this mode Doc will continually use candy to restore his health, unless of course you prevent him from taking a bite... ............................................................................... Telegraphs "Move baby move!" Dodge left when Doc flashes, then counter with two jabs. (To earn a Star, hit Doc with a left body blow as he comes in to attack.) "Quick feet Mac!" Dodge left when Doc flashes, then counter with two jabs. (To earn a Star, hit Doc with a left body blow right before he punches.) "Uhh...Dodge!" Dodge to the left when he says "dodge" then hit him in the face with four jabs. (To earn a Star, hit Doc with a left jab as he gets to the 'o' in dodge.) "Duck this one!" Hold down to duck his attack, then counter with four jabs. (To earn a Star, hit Doc with a right jab after he finishes the phrase.) "Come on!" Immediately dodge left, then counter with four jabs. (To earn a Star, hit Doc with a left jab as he finishes the phrase.) "Keep em up!" Hold up to block BOTH of Doc's punches, then counter with four jabs. Doc will usually do this after a pause. (To earn a Star, you need to hit Doc with a left body blow as soon as he says keep.) Earns Star Sometimes Doc will throw a quick jab that earns him a Star. Candy In Sparring Mode, Doc will continually use candy to regain health. In order to beat him, you'll have to prevent this. When Doc pulls out a candy bar, pay close attention to which hand he's holding it in, then when he holds it out, quickly use a body blow on that side to knock it away. If you are successful, you'll get a pop up message warning you that Doc gets mad when he can't have his candy.. Doc will rip off his shirt and start attacking more aggressively. He'll still try to eat some candy from time to time, knock it away as before. ******************************************************************************* V. Game Review When the original Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! was released back in 1987, it was an absolute sensation. First of all, it starred Mike Tyson, the undefeated Heavyweight Champion of the world and one of the coolest people on the planet. But even more importantly, it was an awesome game combining cutting edge graphics, ten unique/life-like opponents, and excellent controls. Punch-Out!! was also a rumor magnet. These ranged from the highly plausible (such as the rumor that on very rare occasions, King Hippo would get up after being knocked down) to the comical (After Buster Douglas beat Tyson in 1990, several kids at my school said that in an interview Douglas had claimed that he had practiced for the match by playing a lot of MTPO). But the one rumor that everyone had heard (and really wished was true) was that if you met certain conditions (get 99 wins, enter a secret code, etc.) you could actually fight Doc Louis. Of course, this ended up being as completely false as the other rumors, but after more than two decades of waiting, gamers finally have a chance to take on Little Mac's mentor! Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! consists of only one opponent (Doc) and three game modes(difficulty levels). The game plays exactly like the full version of Punch-Out!! except that you just have to knock Doc down once to win. You still use the motion controls with the Wiimote/Nunchuk or turn the Wiimote sideways to play NES-style. Unfortunately the Wii Fit board is not supported and there STILL isn't the option of playing with the Classic Controller. Nintendo really missed an opportunity to make something special here. Extra features like the ability to fight AS Doc or a biking mini-game would have been wonderful and wouldn't have taken that much effort to include. The game also feels unpolished, basic features like saving and Classic Controller support are sorely missed. Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! is really just a glorified demo. Nintendo would have been better off releasing it as a free download BEFORE Punch-Out!! was released to boost word of mouth and sales. As a reward for buying $600 of Nintendo products, it falls short. Pros + After 22 years, you finally get to take on Doc! Cons - Still can't use the Classic Controller. - No save feature. - Seems kind of weak considering you had to buy $600 worth of Nintendo merchandise to play... ******************************************************************************* VI. Frequently Asked Questions ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is Doc Louis's Punch-Out!!? Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! is a downloadable mini-game for the Nintendo Wii. It is NOT the sequel to Punch-Out!! (Wii), instead it is a reward for Club Nintendo members that reached Platinum Status. In Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! you play as Little Mac and face off against Doc Louis in three bouts of increasing difficulty. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How do I get Doc Louis's Punch-Out!!? That begin said, at this very moment (8:09pm on 10/28), there are 12 codes listed on eBay ranging in price from $1.00 to $80.00. (Just in case you are curios, there are currently 16 hats on eBay going from $4.99 to $119.95.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is Club Nintendo and how do I earn coins? Club Nintendo is the successor to My Nintendo. If you have a My Nintendo account, you can just log in and upgrade it to a Club Nintendo account. You earn coins by registering 1st party Nintendo products in the Earn Coins section of Club Nintendo. You will need the PIN included in the game inserts (usually on the back of a Nintendo Power advertisement) and will be asked to take a brief survey. Wii games typically earn you 50 coins and DS games 30 coins, however, not all games are eligible. For more information go to https://club.nintendo.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is Platinum/Gold Status? Platinum Status was given to Club Nintendo members that earned at least 600 coins from July 2008 to July 2009. Members that earned at least 300 coins were given Gold Status. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What were the other Platinum/Gold rewards? The other Platinum reward offered was a Mario hat ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Is it worth earning 600 coins? No. I also feel that it's VERY unfair that last year Japanese Platinum members got Tingle's Balloon Fight (which is an actual DS CARD) while in the US we get a download of a glorified demo ... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Do you need the full version of Punch-Out!! to play? No. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Can you use the Classic Controller to play? No, in fact not only did they NOT add support for the Classic Controller, they actually left out support for the Wii Fit Board! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How do I save? As far as I can tell, there is no save feature. ******************************************************************************* VII. Doc-isms Here are some pearls of wisdom from Doc: "Woowee! Thanks for joining Club Nintendo, Mac!" "I'm finally a fully rounded fighter, Mac! Ha ha ha!" "Son, you got to give 110% out there! I know mathematically it's only possible to give 100% but you got to squeeze that extra 10% out there for me, Mac!" ******************************************************************************* VIII.
