First a big thanks to those who have contributed the various game boards. With that help, I have compiled all of the data into a guide that I hope will be a big help to new (and maybe also experienced) players in the game. I wrote this guide to aid players in maximizing the benefits of the Red Mushroom Houses' card matching game. A favorite way to stock up on items in Super Mario Bros. 3 for NES, this game returns to assist players in the New Super Mario Bros. Wii (which has MANY themes and ideas taken directly from SMB3). This is my first public publishing. After publishing this guide, it has come to my attention that a few ideas About the game boards database is different than originally thought. First of all, there appears to be far more than the original 8 that I had found. However, the reason for this was the second discovered feature. I had been replaying same areas several times (mainly a certain level in world 1) just because it was easier to rescue Toad very quickly. I later confirmed, by reviewing the many submissions of newly discovered boards, that rather than having one database for the entire game, each world appears to have its own database of boards. Those boards are specific to that world and not found elsewhere. It appears that the boards are coming from a database and not random. The mathematical odds of having the same board even come up once are so small if it were random, and I’ve had several people give me duplicate boards, that it must be a small quantity of boards per world. (Additionally, some of those contributors have replayed areas many times in attempt to locate new boards but kept getting repeats after about 6 unique boards per world.) In an effort to make finding your board as easy as possible, I’ve developed a “serial #” system for the boards (explained later in section 4). While I have identified a “safe zone” for finding which board you were given, it may only narrow your search to a few boards (also explained more later in section 4). =========================================================================== =========================================================================== 1.0 How to get the Red Mushroom House. When you complete a level in which you saved Toad, the ones place value of your time determines which mushroom house is your reward. 0-2 = Green (1-UP canon game) 3-6 = Red (18 card flip game) 7-9 = Yellow (chest containing a Star) =========================================================================== =========================================================================== 2.0 About the card matching game. This mini-game looks just like the one in Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES), with the fence climbing features of Super Mario World (SNES). There is a slight differences to the rules however. In this matching game, you do not have to match the same cards and memorize where things are at. However, just like the original, if you "miss twice" then your game ends. Also unlike the original, each entry into the mushroom house starts a new game. The advantage here is that you don't earn the game only to pick up where you left off, which could be as little as 2 items. And best of all, your cards stay flipped over when you select them. Why is it a matching game then? In this game you're flipping as many cards as you can and getting the item displayed when you make a match. Because of this change, the difference on "missed matches" is no longer flipping two cards that do not match, but instead finding one pair of Bowser cards. Although the bad news is that there are two sets of Bowser cards, the good news is that they are both Baby Bowser and his father King Bowser. This means that flipping two Bowser cards doesn't end your turn if they are father and son. =========================================================================== =========================================================================== 3.0 The items. For 18 cards that you are turning, there are 9 possible items. Either two or three of the items will have a duplicate match. Some items such as the star are not duplicated. This results in giving you two or three single items and two or three individual items per game, for a total of five items. Stars are rarer, and in some worlds the boards focus on giving a certain item more. Additionally, there are restrictions in the early part of the game. You can not get Mini-Mushrooms until world 2, or Penguin Suits until world 3, as these are the worlds where they are first encountered. Super Mushroom Mini-Mushroom Fire Flower Ice Flower Propeller Cap Penguin Suite Star Baby Bowser King Bowser =========================================================================== =========================================================================== 4.0 The boards. Not all boards are available in all parts of the game. For example, world 2 (the desert world) was the first time that the Mini-Mushroom becomes available, and the Penguin Suite not until world 3 (the ice world). Also keep in mind that there was no order to these in my guide, other than the order of submission or discovery. The boards appear to be world specific. If you replay a certain area several times and save Toad enough, you will begin seeing duplicates for boards from that world rather quickly. As with the original game (SMB3), looking at specific tiles will allow you to quickly figure out which board you've been given. See the “board serial #” area for details. Guaranteed safe spots? What was once thought to be possible has now been confirmed that although certain tiles are far less likely to contain a Bowser tile, only the 4th tile on row 1 has been constantly safe. (IMPORTANT NOTE: 5 boards of world 8 DO BREAK THIS RULE! The others don’t.) However, the boards I have been given for review, turning over all but the 2nd tile in row 1 may reveal up to two Bowser cards but they rarely match. This means that you can flip cards 1 and 3-6 safely (over 80% of the time or nearly 5 out of 6 times). This is the safest method I have come up with. If you find a safer method, please let me know. I have not used a Nintendo Player's Guide or any other such guide book to obtain this information. This data was collected the old fashion way, through normal playing of the game and compiling it into a spreadsheet for comparison. The following individuals have assisted me in gathering the data which I have put together into this guide. (Everyone mentioned here has contributed at least one completed board. Even if it was already submitted I would like to still thank them for their efforts.) Reptobismol = Contributed over 50% of the boards throughout the first week! Very special thanks for providing boards at later levels. This often required rescuing Toad many times in very hard worlds 7 and 8 as well as insane world 9. thatguy IRLarry Nicholas B. Sean S. Some users attempted to submit boards but were met with defeat of being unable to get all of the information due to losing the game too early. However, there are a few ways to still see the information after the game has ended. 1: Use of the “Home” button to pause. -- This works great for any time you need to stop the action of the Wii. In this case you can quickly pause and unpause to write down what you need. Although the “Wii Menu” and “Reset” buttons are covering part of the screen, along with the top and bottom black banners, much can still be seen. 2: “Freeze” the picture. – Many TVs now have a freeze or pause picture function. This can be used (followed by the “Home” button on the Wii’s remote) to keep the picture on the screen. 3: Photos. -- Although having a camera handy is also great, there may be Complications with this such as focus (auto-focus taking too long), shutter speed not being right and causing scan lines on the screen to show up in the picture, and other possible normal photo issues. Aside from that, a good photo is also a nice way to contribute a screenshot of information. However you choose, I thank you for the contributions as they help others who use this guide to have an easier time in the Red Mushroom Houses and therefore have a better chance or less frustrations in some parts of this New Super Mario Bros. Wii. =========================================================================== 5.2 Copyright. At this time, GameFAQs is the only site where I have published this guide.
