While they don’t have any affect on the gameplay they can make your truck look quite striking and allow you to distinguish from other trucks or indeed in versus mode. The colours follow as; Vicious Violet Canary Yellow Sunset Orange Flame Red Forest Green Midnight Blue Nighthawk Black Neon Yellow Electric Blue Speed Green Plum Crazy Victory Red Additional Truck Styles For each truck (excluding the final two) there is a separate style you can choose from, the game says if gives you an additional colour with the truck but that’s rather misleading as one I doesn’t affect the truck’s colour that much and is isn’t with the colours. You can unlock it by EITHER running 10 races, it doesn’t matter how well you did but this can take a while with all those trucks or by getting three S ranks on any track. The latter is good for when you’re just getting all the additional styles for totality reasons as you can pick the first few tracks in excite mode and get S ranks all day long. Once you’ve unlocked the alternate style use press down or up on the D pad while you’re selecting your truck, you can tell you’ve unlocked an alternate style on a truck because arrows appear over the icon and a star is next to the name. How to Unlock This is quite tricky because I’m not 100% sure. To unlock the trucks all you have to do is race however the number of races you have to take part in before you can unlock the next truck varies. Chances are you’ll unlock them all before you’ve completed excite mode with S rank or a lot sooner than that. The second unlockable group is open to be unlocked after you’ve reached Super Excite mode and seem to take longer to unlock than the first group. The hidden group have set unlockable requirements which I will go into detail in that section. Basic Trucks Available from the start. Boulder Speed: 2.5 Turbo: 3 Air: 2.5 Grip: 3 Handing: Med Commentary: Low stats on everything but is quite rounded. Firefly Speed: 2.5 Turbo: 2.5 Air: 3.5 Grip: 2.5 Handing: Quick Commentary: Quite hard to control good amount of air. Wolf Speed: 3.5 Turbo: 2.5 Air: 2.5 Grip: 2.5 Handing: Quick Commentary: Quickest of the basic group good all-rounder Unlockable Group 1 Available to be unlocked from the start, you must run races to the next one in the chain to be unlocked. Summit Speed: 4 Turbo: 3.5 Air: 2 Grip: 2 Handing: Slow Commentary: Quick and has plenty of boost however is heavy and hard to steer quickly. Serpent Speed: 2 Turbo: 3 Air: 2.5 Grip: 4 Handing: Med Commentary: Very slow and turbo doesn’t make up for it, has good grip but that isn’t enough to save this car. Alpine Speed: 2.5 Turbo: 2.5 Air: 4 Grip: 3 Handing: Quick Commentary: Pretty average but will travel through the air better than heavier vehicles. Raven Speed: 3.5 Turbo: 2.5 Air: 3 Grip: 3.5 Handing: Med Commentary: Above average stats in pretty much everything, a good all-rounder. Dominator Speed: 3.5 Turbo: 3 Air: 2.5 Grip: 4 Handing: Med Commentary: Good speed and grip, air is rather weak and turbo just above average but it’s still a good car. Rad Speed: 3 Turbo: 4 Air: 2.5 Grip: 3.5 Handing: Med Commentary: Decent speed and good turbo and grip more than make up for the average air. Razor Speed: 4.5 Turbo: 4.5 Air: 1.5 Grip: 2.5 Handing: Slow Commentary: Very fast and plenty of turbo, grip is average however air is rather rubbish and has slow handing. Unlockable Group 2 Dynamo Speed: 3 Turbo: 3 Air: 3.5 Grip: 3.5 Handing: Quick Commentary: Above average all-rounder. Mongoose Speed: 4.5 Turbo: 2.5 Air: 2 Grip: 4.5 Handing: Med Commentary: Easy to control and very fast however lack of turbo and air really brings the car down on those jumps, literally. Blaster Speed: 4.5 Turbo: 3 Air: 2.5 Grip: 4 Handing: Med Commentary: Quick and easy to control but better stats than the Mongoose in turbo and air makes up for the 0.5 loss of grip, it’s just a very version of the Mongoose. Mako Speed: 4.5 Turbo: 1.5 Air: 4.5 Grip: 4 Handing: Quick Commentary: Great speed, air and grip however the lack of turbo means you’ll be close to overheating all the time. Trekker Speed: 4 Turbo: 2.5 Air: 3.5 Grip: 4.5 Handing: Med Commentary: Good speed and grip, decent air and average turbo. Kodiac Speed: 5 Turbo: 5 Air: 2 Grip: 2.5 Handing: Slow Commentary: Very fast and the turbo means you’ll be able to leave others in the dust however air means you’ll need that boost for jumps and the lack of grip and the slow handing in a fast car means it’s rather hard to control. Saguaro Speed: 3 Turbo: 3 Air: 5 Grip: 4.5 Handing: Quick Commentary: Easy to control and use it when you want to fly. Wolverine Speed: 4 Turbo: 2.5 Air: 4.5 Grip: 5 Handing: Med Commentary: A great car, with pretty much everything you want, the lack of a good turbo is quite a drag though but doubtful you’ll be using this car for much longer once you unlock the next car which is the… Wasp Speed: 5 Turbo: 5 Air: 3 Grip: 4.5 Handing: Med Commentary: Couldn’t really ask for a better car, well you could but you’re not going to get it. Great 5 and turbo, grip means it’s easy to keep control the only slight let down is the air. Hidden Unlockables These are special trucks that don’t appear as shadows in the truck gallery. Monster Truck How to unlock: Unlock the alternative style on all other trucks. Note this truck doesn’t have an alternative style. Speed: 5 Turbo: 5 Air: 5 Grip: 1 Handing: Slow Commentary: Fast, loads of turbo and flies like crazy however the lack of grip and slow handing does make this beast hard to tame. Crazy Monster Truck How to unlock: You have to have mirror mode unlocked, to get mirror mode you have to have S rank on all Super Excite Truck tracks, to get Super Excite you have to have S ranks on all Excite tracks. To unlock Crazy Monster Truck you have to, you guessed it, have S ranks on all mirror mode tracks. Simple enough really as it’s just a mirror of Super Excite mode which you just got S ranks on to get to this mode so it won’t take that long. Speed: 5 Turbo: 5 Air: 5 Grip: 1 Handing: Slow Commentary: While at first glance you’ll be forgiven for wondering what’s different about this monster truck and the last one, well I’ll tell, if I didn’t this would be rather worthless. Crazy Monster Truck acts like it’s got a permanent POW icon, despite having 5 turbo it doesn’t have any turbo (but can still do turbo jumps) but like having the POW icon you constantly have an extra boost meaning it’s faster than Monster truck. In addition to this you won’t have to worry about trees anymore as you can just plough right through them. Once again the grip and slow handing coupled with the high speed and continuous boost means this is a very hard car to control. I enjoyed Excite truck and it was the first racing game I have played for ages, not that it was really about racing but you know what I mean. It does lack variety in tracks, terrains, settings and modes but the gameplay more than makes up for it.
