MARIO & SONIC AT THE SOCHI 2014 WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES FAQ Table of Contents: Introduction Characters Stats Explanation Olympic Events Dream Events Legends Showdown Medley Mania Action and Answer Tour M&S TV Online/Miiverse Records Credits INTRODUCTION Hello all, I am FireMario12, creator of the past M&S Winter Olympic Games FAQ, the London Olympics FAQ, and a Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Armor FAQ, making, this my fourth FAQ. If you guys have any further questions, comments, or data that I missed, email me at awkerwin@gmail.com The big change in this game from the predecessor is the introduction of the Wii U and the Gamepad functionalities (All wii remotes must be wii remote plus or with an attached accessory or else it will not work). There are 25 events in this game, 16 Olympic and 9 Dream. There are 4 all new Olympic events and all of the Dream ones are completely new. The rest of the Olympic events have been altered significantly or not much at all with new controls for most of them. Personally, I think this game is awesome and better than the original, I just wish that the adventure mode was better (Legends Showdown isn't all that fun). It also has a, while limited, online mode. Now lets get to it shall we? CHARACTERS No new characters have joined the games this time around unfortunately, so I will keep the biographies from the previous guide. On the plus side, stats have become much more detailed. Instead of only 4 stats, there are a lot more of them, and they differ for every event. So this time, I am just going to list the general stats of all kinds for the character instead of specifics. And again, my apologies for the Sonic character bios, I don't play his games so I know very little about their backstories. TEAM MARIO MARIO: ALL AROUND The world's best plumber is here once again to compete in the 2014 Olympics. Mario has extremely good jumping abilities and can turn into many forms like Fire Mario where he can throw fireballs and Boo Mario where he can pass through solid walls like a boo. Mario is the best at many things: golfing, playing baseball, playing soccer, partying, saving princesses and many more things. Because of that he is well rounded in stats which means he is an all purpose player. LUIGI: ALL AROUND Luigi is the secondary overshadowed brother of Mario. Everyone thinks he is just a taller, younger Mario but he has become very unique. In other games he uses his Poltergeist 3000 which is a vacuum that sucks up ghosts which Mario doesn't use and believe or not but in many games Luigi can jump higher than Mario. He is well rounded in stats and is a well rounded player. PEACH: SKILL Peach is the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom. She has been kidnapped many, many, many times but has always been saved by her special one Mario. You would think that she would learn from it and set up her castle's defenses better but some people never learn. She is a very kind, generous woman with a big heart. She is very skilled. DAISY: SPEED Daisy is the princess of Sarsaland. She has been in only 1 nonsport Mario game and really is just a partner for Peach. Coincidently she is in love with Luigi Mario's brother. She is a tomboy and is out going and friendly. Somehow she got faster than Peach to become a speed character. She is obviously fast and is good for racing-based events. YOSHI: SPEED Yoshi is a resident of Yoshi Island. He is a kind, friendly dinosaur who has helped Mario and Luigi in many adventures. He even helped when the bros were babies and Baby Mario was dropped in Yoshi Island when Baby Luigi was kidnapped. He has a very long and sticky tongue that he can use to eat anything. He can run at very high speeds and is good at racing-based events. WARIO:POWER Wario is a very greedy man who loves garlic. He is enemies with Mario for some reason that I do not know. Wario loves money and will do literally anything like go on huge adventures just for the coins. He also runs his own company WarioWare which makes video games. Wario even has his own games on Wii and DS.He eats lots of garlic which gives him a lot of stamina. He also is very strong. WALUIGI:SKILL Waluigi is a very sneaky man who likes trouble. He is always hanging around with Wario because 2 is better than 1 when it comes to causing trouble. He likes to play with bob-ombs, and bullet bills to cause mischief. He is enemies with Luigi for some some reason that I do not know. Waluigi is very tall and lanky which gives him good reach. Waluigi is very skilled. BOWSER:POWER Bowser is the oldest and most evil villian in Mario's history. He has done almost nothing but cause trouble for the citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom by stealing Princess Peach. He has a variety of evil minions: hammer bros, koopas, goombas, cheep-cheeps, bob-ombs, porcupuffers and many more. He is not all bad though because on rare occasions he helps Mario and the gang fight another evil villian. Bowser is very strong and is my personal favorite Mario character. BOWSER JR: ALL AROUND BowserJr. is the evil tyrant's most famous son. He is Bowser's eighth son (the others being the Koopalings) and has been in most Mario games since his debut in Super Mario Sunshine when Bowser convinced him Peach was his mom and Bowser told him to steal his mom back. Now Bowser Jr. likes causing trouble to Mario when he is on his way to save Peach. Bowser Jr uses mostly giant robots to fight Mario. He is well rounded in stats and is good at anything. DONKEY KONG: POWER Donkey Kong is a gorilla who lives in the jungle with his ape friends. He has a very bad relationship with the neighbors the Kremlings who are evil alligators who have taken his banana stash and other valuable things countless times. Recently a group of musical tikis (I love the music they play) came and took the banana stash so he and Diddy Kong his nephew went on an adventure to get it back. Diddy Kong is smaller and more agile than Donkey Kong while Donkey Kong is bigger and more powerful than Diddy Kong. He is very strong. MISCELLANEOUS MII:ALL AROUND Your own personal character. You can create miis to be anyone you want like a friend, you, or some random funny looking person. You can dress up your miis in many different costumes. All miis are all around for some reason even if they are wearing a costume of another kind of player for example a power character. They will have stats for a power character but still have an all around special. Miis are good for any event. TEAM SONIC SONIC:SPEED Sonic is the fastest thing in the world and is here to compete in the 2014 Olympics. He is a blue hedgehog. He can roll up in a ball and roll at extreme speeds. He collects rings and tries to collect the 7 chaos emeralds so he can become an unstoppable ball of speed and fury, Super Sonic. He always beats Dr. Eggman over and over again. He cares for others but is not very serious and jokes around often. He is very, very, very fast so he is good at events that deal with racing. TAILS: SKILL Tails is the fastest thing in the world's sidekick. He looks like a yellow fox. Tails is a mechanical genius and can build and fix many electronic devices. He can fly with his 2 tails by spinning them together to create a propeller. He is pretty fast just like Sonic. He is shy and not as outgoing but he still helps Sonic whenever he can. Tails is very skilled. KNUCKLES:POWER Knuckles is Sonic's power friend. Knuckles is a red echidna with very big hands with spikes on them. He is cocky and is too confident of his power. He runs very fast like Tails and Sonic and sometimes helps them in their adventures to fight Dr. Eggman. His fists with spikes on them can supposedly can break through rock and anything else. His fists give him strength so he is very strong. AMY: ALL AROUND Amy is the self-called girlfriend of Sonic. Amy is a pretty pink hedgehog. She is an outgoing and friendly girl who has a very good attitude. She uses that attitude to cheer people up and brings people out of bad moods. She apparently uses a piko-piko hammer and is extremely dangerous with it. She also is good at predicting the future with tator cards. She is well rounded with stats and is good for any event. BLAZE:ALL AROUND Blaze is a cat who is the guardian of the Sol Emeralds. She is a purple cat who is a princess of another dimension that is not Sonic's dimension. She is has a good heart and tries to stop evil whenever she can. Her emotions apparently are concealed in an imaginary bubble around her. She is well rounded in stats so she is good for any event. DR. EGGMAN:SKILL Dr. Eggman is the most evil villian of the Sonic universe. He is very smart and is great at creating robots and evil machines and gadgets which he uses to fight Sonic. He is trying to the Sonic universe become Eggmanland but Sonic always has to beat him (which is sad because I wouldn't mind seeing Eggmanland). Dr. Eggman is the tallest character in the game and is very skilled. SHADOW:SPEED Shadow is the ultimate life form created by Dr. Eggman's great grandfather. He has almost the exact same stats as Sonic because he was created to destroy Sonic. He always says he is the ultimate or perfect because he was built to be that way. He looks identical to Sonic but to make him look more evil, he was made black and red while Sonic is mainly blue. He is one of the fastest characters in the game so he is good at racing-based events. METAL SONIC:SPEED Metal Sonic is the robot rival of Sonic created by Dr. Eggman himself (isn't it strange that both of he and his great grandfather thought of making a Sonic clone but they both are completely different). Metal Sonic almost has the exact same stats as Sonic because he was constructed that way. He cannot talk unlike Shadow but Metal Sonic has a rocket booster on his back to make him go faster than Shadow ever could (I think). He is one of the fastest characters in the game and is my personal favorite Sonic character and is good at racing-based events. VECTOR: POWER Vector is the head of the Chaotix Detective agency. He is a very good detective apparently. He must be very greedy or he wouldnt always wear the same gold chains over his neck for every Olympic games so far. He must also be obsessed with music because he always has headphones. He is very strong. SILVER: SKILL Silver is a white hedgehog who has come from the future to come save the world from destruction. He has psycic abilities like being able to fly and being able to levitate objects in the air. I am kind of disappointed though because Silver would be way cooler if he levitated his equipment during the events. That wouldn't be very fair but it still would be very cool. Silver is a very skilled character. STATS EXPLANATION I will number the order of importance in each event (in my opinion) to help you choose characters to get records with. There are only four completely new ones, with most of the old ones coming back with new controls with the new Wii U Gamepad. New in this FAQ is the Recommended Characters section, where I will give my thoughts on who your best choices are and why. Stats are explained in the section above. In events with both Gamepad and Wii Remote Plus used, I will abbreviate Gamepad with G and Wii Remote Plus with W. Events marked with an asterick(*) are events that are available in online multiplayer. If you want to see what the stats affect, look above at the STATS section Alpine Skiing Downhill Controllers used: Wii Remote Plus for all (recommended nunchuck attached but not neccessary) Controls: 1. At the startup hold down B after it appears on the screen, and swing the remote down to start at GO for a boost 2. During the race tilt the remote (with nunchuck if attached) left and right to turn in the respective directions 3. Lean the remote forward to crouch in order to go faster but with less control The point of Alpine Skiing Downhill is to ski your way through a course the fastest, passing through flag gates in order to not be penalized with extra time. If you touch the small, short end of the flag in the flag gate, you will get a boost and a big number will show up on the screen showing how many you have gotten in the race. After getting three (do not need to be 3 gates in a row) boosts, you will get a special boost that it is bigger and faster than a normal boost, so obviously it is your topmost priority to get as many of those as you can for the best record. If you miss a gate, you will get an additional 2 seconds on your time which can be important in deciding if you take first or not, so you need to make sure you go through all of them. Try to stay crouched (leaning remote forward) at all times to stay at top speed. An important note is that you want to stay OUT of the air as much as possible, being in the air drastically slows you down in this event. Recommended Characters (Alpine): The most important stats in this event are top speed and boosts. The turns are not all that hard in this event and acceleration is not important. So speed characters are good at top speed, and skill characters are good at boosts. Now the problem with skill characters, is that all of them have bad top speed, so speed characters have to take priority. A speed character who has good boosts and top speed is a great choice but any speed character will do. An all around character with high top speed and boosts will also work. Also, in regards to staying out of the air, power characters do that better due to their weight, so they are good choices as well (I personally do better with power than anything else in this event) Ski Jump Large Hill Controllers: Wii Remote Plus for all Controls: 1. Swing the remote down to initiate the sliding down the hill sequence. 2. Hold down B to charge up power for the jump while on the yellow section at the bottom of the hill and swing the remote up when you reach the edge of the ramp to jump 3. Tilt the remote left and right to fly in the respective directions. 4. Upon reaching the ground, extend the remote to the side as shown on the screen to successfully land. The goal of the ski jump event is to jump as far as you can on skis from a large hill and to perform a successful landing. You want to start the sliding down sequence when the wind is strongest, which is shown by the wind sock being visciously thrown around. In the air there are updrafts that you should fly into to get boosted higher and farther. At the drift you should tilt the remote in the direction of the draft to get higher rankings (good, great, perfect) and higher boosts. When you reach the ground extend the remote to the side upon contact to get as many balance points as possible. Recommended Characters (Ski Jump): The most important stat in this event is speed, so that you can jump farther, with flying being the second most important and landing being least useful. Given these restrictions, the best characters would be a speed character with high flying. or an all around character with good speed. Any speed character or all around character will do though. Skiing: Moguls Controllers: Wii Remote Plus for all Controls: 1. Charge up power with B during the startup and swing the remote down at GO to start 2. Tilt the remote side to side to complete turns 3. Swing up at the tip of a ramp to jump well 4. Swing or tilt the remote in the given directions as shown on the screen in midair 5. Swing down upon landing to get a landing boost The goal of this event is to get the most points through speed, turn tricks, and aerial tricks. You start with a turn section, then jump, turn section, jump, and finally turn section. The time to turn is indicated by an arrow in the snow surrounded by bumps. You want to tilt the remote to dodge the bump when you are at the tip of the arrow to get the best results. In the air, there are a variety of tricks, 4 normal and then your character's special trick. The last one is difficult to pull off but gets you a lot of points so you want to try to perform it. Recommended Characters (Moguls): The most important stats in this event are the turn stat and jump stat because they make your tricks get you more points. The characters that excel at these stats are the skill characters. Any skill character will work, but the jump stat is slightly more important, so a character with a high turn stat but higher jump stat, like Eggman, is a good choice. Ski Cross* Controllers: Wii Remote Plus for all (with optional attached nunchuck) Controls: 1. Hold B to charge power at the startup, swing the remote down at GO to start 2. Tilt the remote left or right to turn in the respective directions. 3. Lean the remote forward to crouch, ski faster but with harder controls. 4. Swing remote up at the tip of ramps or bumps to jump 5. Swing down upon landing to get a landing boost The objective of this event is to ski competitively with 3 opponents and be the first to the finish in a bumpy track filled with turns. Try to remain crouched for most of the races, but you will need to slow down for some difficult turns in the middle of the course. At these turns, try to take the inside route and run into the flags like in Alpine to get speed boosts. When you come across bumps (little hills with blue arrows on them) you want to try to jump at the first to jump all of them and pull off a landing boost to boost your speed. Try not to crash into other people, that will slow your speed down drastically. But if you are behind, try to get behind one of the people ahead of you to get a slipstream (shown as a blue circle around your character) which will boost your speed and make it easier to pass your opponents. Recommended Characters (Ski Cross) : To do well in this event you need someone who has great top speed, and decent cornering and boosts (acceleration is not terribly important). A good choice would be an all around who has his/her best stat in top speed. Or you could find a speed character with good cornering and boost stats like Yoshi (good means about 3/5). Biathlon Controllers: Wii Remote Plus for all with Gamepad needed twice during shooting sessions Controls: 1. Hold down B to charge power at startup, swing remote down at GO to start 2. Press B during the raise to go faster and expend stamina 3. Upon reaching the shooting line (red line in the snow) the player who gets there first switches to Gamepad, any others keep Wii Remote Plus 4. (As Gamepad user) Tilt the system left and right to aim and press B to shoot. 5. (As Wii Remote Plus user) Tilt the remote left and right to aim and press B to shoot 6. (As Gamepad user) Switch back to wii remote after shooting putting the Gamepad in reach in a safe place. 7. Lean the remote forward to crouch on downward hills to go faster The goal of this event is to be the first to the finish in a combination of cross country skiing and rifle shooting. However, you will notice that there is a big bar with a heart that is your stamina bar. You need to utilize your stamina to go faster but make sure to not run out. You will gradually recover stamina very slowly when going on a straight slope but you don't want to waste your time with that, you want to crouch on downward hills to go fast and recover stamina much faster (but don't press B to use up more stamina). When not going down hills just keep pressing B to constantly use stamina and go faster and faster. When you get to the shooting sections, you are graded based on time elapsed and accuracy. The more important thing however, is time, because that time is also part of your final race time. You can rush through the shooting, getting at least 'greats' with accuracy will be fine. If you do well in the shooting parts, you will get a huge boost of stamina, so try to use most of it (have it be at about 40%) when you reach a shooting section. If you have full stamina going down a hill, you should just keep pressing B to speed yourself up. Recommended Characters (Biathlon): Stamina and Speed are very important in this event, cornering very little and acceleration not so much. Given that, Power characters are a very good choice, because they inherently have a lot of stamina, allowing them to use more of it and get along faster. Another good choice is a speed character with good stamina because speed is pretty important in this event. Snowboard Parallel Giant Slalom Controllers: Gamepad (G) for first player, Wii Remote Plus (W) for any others Controls: 1. G: Hold down ZL and ZR (trigger buttons) to charge up power during startup, swing system down at GO to start. W: Hold down B to charge power during startup, swing remote down at GO to start. 2. G/W: Tilt system/remote left and right to turn. 3. G: Hold down ZL or ZR and tilt the system to drift. W: Hold B and tilt the remote to drift 4.G/W: Tilt/Lean the system forward to crouch and speed yourself up This objective of this event is to race one opponent down a slope with lots of turns. This is not just a simple race though because there are restrictions on the path you must take. If you are the first player, the important flags are the blue ones, second player red. The restrictions are that you must stay on the side with the little part of the flag (hard to explain verbally, see diagram below). The good and vital part of the flags is that they operate like Alpine ones, meaning that they give you boosts if you run into the little end. You need to utilize these boosts and drifts (they operate exactly like Mariokart if you are familiar with those games) to get to the finish first. For the best results, you basically have to go boost crazy and drift as much as you can, running into flags along the way to get to the finish line first Diagram: | | | | | | |=snow | | x | | | x=part of the flag | | xx | | | | | | | | | | Basically you need to stay to the right of the x's because the smaller (shorter) end is on the right. Going left of the flag will get you penalized with time boosts. Recommended characters (Parallel Slalom): The boosts in this event are very important, so you need good stats in those areas but you also need good top speed because it is a race after all. None of the speciality characters (power, speed, skill) fit this bill, so all around characters are the best for this one. Any will do, but the best probably would be one whose lowest stat is in acceleration and higher in something else. Snowboard Slopestyle Controllers: Gamepad for all (alternating turns) Controls: 1. Hold ZL and ZR to charge power during startup, swing system down at GO to start. 2. Tilt system left and right to turn 3. Swing system up at the tip of ramps to jump 4. While in midair with the stylus, swipe the ball that appears around your character to perform tricks and hold down the ball to stop near the ground to land 5. While on a grinding rail, tilt the system in the opposite direction that you are falling to keep your balance 6. While on a trick rail, swing the system up (or down) to perform tricks on the indicated circles This event, like Moguls, is based on performing tricks to get points and getting the most points to win. You need to make sure you do well on the aerial tricks, because those are worth the most points. You want to do just enough aerial tricks to land on the ground safely, because if you don't, you will get a harsh point off of your total for bad landing. You'll learn about how many you can do at each hill through practice, but generally, at the later hills you can do more tricks because you are going faster. Now with the grinding rails and trick rails, there is a star ranking over them, one to three. The more stars the rail has, the harder it is to perform but the more points you get. Naturally, the way to get the highest records is to successfully pull of the three star rail tricks/grinds. They'll get easier with practice. One thing to note on the trick rail (called box tricks) is that you want to swing up when you first touch the glowing circle, not the center like I thought for a while. Recommended Characters (Slopestyle): The best characters in this event are the ones that are good at tricks, because they are so important in this event. The skill characters are best at this because they have very high stats in both aerial and box tricks which are more important than the grinding tricks that others excel at. Choose one that either has balanced high aerial and box, or one with slightly higher aerial, as those are more important. Snowboard Cross* Controllers: Gamepad for first player, Wii Remote Plus for any others Controls: 1. G: Hold ZL and ZR to charge power, swing system down at GO to start. W: Hold B to charge power, swing system down at GO to start 2.G/W: Tilt the system/remote left and right to turn 3. G/W: Swing the system/remote up at the tip of a ramp/bump to jump 4. G/W: Tilt the system/remote to be aligned with the ground on contact to get a landing boost 5. G: Hold ZL or ZR and tilt the system to drift. W: Hold B and tilt the remote to drift The goal of this event is to race your opponents on snowboard to the finish line. This is very similar to the Ski Cross, except for two main factors. One, the inclusion of drifting helps you take turns easier. Two, snowboards are not as good at jumping and the boosts are harder to pull off than skis so the distance will be shorter and not as helpful. Take those into account and play it like a Ski cross match (look above in that section if you need more help) Recommended Characters (Snowboard Cross): Most important stats in this one are top speed and either of the two boost stats, whichever you are better at. I prefer drift boosts so I go with a speed character with good stats in drifting as well, but you can try a speed character with good landing as also. Another possibility is to you an all around character with speed as his/her highest stat. Speed Skating 500m Controllers: Wii Remote Plus for all Controls: 1. Hold the remote in the pose shownon the screen to get a good boost 2. Shake the remote rapidly after GO to get an even better starting boost 3.Swing the remote side to side in rhythm to what is shown on the screen (wait for the light to get to the top of each side and swing in that corresponding direction. This event is very short and the goal is to get to the finish line before your opponent. To skate well, you need to get consecutive perfects by swinging at the right time when the light enters the top section. If you get three in a row, you will get your first special boost, next is gotten at 4 perfects, then 5, and finally at 6 (there may be one at seven if it is possible, I have never gotten that many after the fourth boost). This sounds easy and it is once you get the hang of it, the hard part is in the 'Final Stretch' section where the light and guide is gone and you must swing in rhythm from memory. This is pretty difficult, but if you pull off a special boost in this stretch, the boost will be a lot more effective. Recommended Characters (Speed Skating): You need a character that is really fast for this one. I dont even know why they include a cornering stat in this event because you yourself dont turn at all, the game does for you so that stat is useless. A speed character with good boost stat and low cornering is a great choice because boosts are pretty important in this.I guess an all around could work too, but stick with speed for this one. Short Track 1000m* Controllers: Wii Remote Plus for all Controls: 1. Swing down at GO (no power charge up) and shake the remote to get boosted up until your character slows down his/her arm movements 2. Tilt the remote left and right to turn (left to go around corners) 3. Press B to make quicker shorter turns (not recommended because they make it easy to crash into the side and lose time) 3. Press A to activate your special boosts when you receive them This is a very fast-paced skating race around an oval track. The main thing you need to do is go around the corners well so that you don't slow down a lot and try not to crash into others for the same reason. Another important part is after the intial turn there will be blue lines in the ice that you should try to skate in for as long as possible because they charge up your special bar meter and your special moves are very important. The best use of the special move is to use them in going around corners because they make your controls easier and faster to go around the semi-difficult to get around corners. Try to get an early lead so that you won't have to deal with fighting with your opponents over skating on the blue line and making sharp turns. Recommended Characters (Short Track): Speed Characters are again, like Speed Skating, your best bet. However, this time you have to take into account your character's cornering stat as that is a crucial part of the race. So you want to use a character with great speed and decent boosts and cornering, I like using Yoshi for this one for that reason. Figure Skating Singles Controllers: Wii Remote Plus for all Controls: 1. Swing down to start 2. When yellow arrows appear around your character and 'STEP' is at the top of the screen, swing the remote in the direction of the arrow when the small circle at the start closes around it (it will go to the rhythm most of the time if my description is confusing). 3. When 'SPIRAL' appears at the top of the screen, balance the remote on the pink line to avoid falling 4. When 'JUMP' appears, swing the remote at the center of the glowing red circles and spin it quickly while in midair to perform spin jumps. 5. When 'SPIN' appears, spin the remote quickly to perform a spin 6. When 'WAVE' appears, extend the remote to your side and raise and lower it to collect the blue music notes. 7. When 'POSE AT 0' appears, get ready to spin for a while and then pose as shown on the screen. The objective of this game is to score the most points through tricks, moves and jumps. This game is very music based so you need to get into the music to do better with steps. Yellow steps are slower than red steps, which you need to be quick with. I personally get the best score in the topmost song, the Meditation song. I can't get higher scores on any of the other songs even with perfect combos throughout the whole thing Recommended Characters (Figure Skating Singles): The best stat in this event is jumping so I suggest you use skill characters with high jumping and at least decent rhythm and balance (Peach is my favorite figure skater). Also, skill characters always seem to do better in events using points like this one. Figure Skating Pairs Controllers: Wii Remote Plus for all Controls: 1. Swing down to initiate the performance 2. When yellow arrows appear around your character and 'STEP' is at the top of the screen, swing the remote in the direction of the arrow when the small circle at the start closes around it (it will go to the rhythm most of the time if my description is confusing). 3. When 'JUMP' appears, swing the remote up when you reach the center of the glowing red circle 4. When 'SPIRAL' appears at the top of the screen, balance the remote on the pink line to avoid falling 5. When 'WAVE' appears, extend the remote to your side and raise and lower it to collect the blue music notes. 6. When 'HOLD HANDS' appears, if playing with 2 players, hold the same remote and hold A, if solo just hold A. 7. When 'PAIR WAVE' appears, hold hands (6, above) and swing the remote up and down to the music (you will automatically get the music notes, focus on the music) 8. When 'LIFT' appears, let go of A, switch back to your corresponding remotes, and pose with the pose on the screen 9. When ' ' appears, hold hands (6, above) and swing the remote together up at the center of the glowing red circles. 10. When 'DEATH SPIRAL' appears, hold hands and have the person playing the girl, circle the person playing the guy (or just move the remote in a circular direction while holding A) Man thats a lot of controls. Anyway, the key to this game is working together and syncronizing your movements to the rhythm and each other. This event is pretty hard but very entertaining with some of the character matchups you can have. Unfortunately, they don't let you have two male or two female characters perform in this event, just one of each. You want to have a priority on #'s 7-10, because those are the most important and hardest ones that give the most points and require good teamwork to pull off. Recommended Characters (Figure Skating Pairs): The stats of the characters are the exact same as Figure Skating Singles and the event is very similar, so the same character recommendation applies, skill characters. Skeleton Controllers: Gamepad for all (alternating) Controls: 1. Hold ZL and ZR at the beginning to charge power, swing down at GO to start. 2. Rapidly tap ZL and ZR to run until you get a ranking (good, great, etc) after GO 3. Swing system up at the red line to board the sled. 4. Tilt the system left and right to turn This event involves riding on a one-person sled down a track to beat your opponent's time.Your TV screen will show the view from behind your character, while the Gamepad shows the view as seen by your character. I recommend you look at the Gamepad. Anyway, the big thing you will notice is the big glowing green or orange line. What you want to do is stay on this line to charge up boosts which make you go much faster. At first, you will see this line is made up of 5 lines, you want to stay on the middle one to charge your power faster. Same applies to when it splits into three and then one. Once your boost is activated, the meter will start shrinking, to slow it down, you want to stay on the glowing line, especially the middle one. This slows the boost from ending so that you are faster for a longer period of time. That's all there is to it. If you get good at this, you should be able to pull off at least four solid boosts. Recommended Characters (Skeleton) : Sturdiness is surprisingly important in this event, it makes it harder to veer you off of the line when you are on it. That being the case, power characters are your best bet. Try to use one with good speed to because that's important too, don't worry too much about turning. Bobsleigh Controllers: Gamepad for first player (leader), Wii Remote Plus for any others Controls: 1. G: Hold ZL and ZR to charge up power, swing down at GO to start. W: Hold B to charge up power, swing down at GO to start 2. G: Rapidly tap ZL and ZR to run fast until you get a ranking. W: Rapidly shake the remote up and down to run until you get a ranking. 3. G/W: Swing up upon reaching the red line to board the bobsleigh 4. G/W: Turn system/remote left and right to turn 5. G only: Tap ZL to signal to your teammates to turn left, Tap ZR to signal to your teammates to turn right This is similar to the skeleton event in controls and feel. The difference is you actually have to work together in this one and the boosting system is slightly different. This time, you need to ride on short glowing lines as long as you can to get more powerful boosts which make you go faster. You want to make turns much earlier in this event than you normally would in other events, because your vehicle is giant, and it has bad turning. If you hit a wall, you will slow down severely. Other than that, there isn't much else to it. Recommended Characters (Bobsleigh): If you are playing solo, only the stats of your first character will affect anything so you want a power character for their strong sturdiness stat which is just as useful in this as in Skeleton. However, if you are playing multiplayer, the other character's
stats will affect your vehicle, so you want a character with good speed and turning such as a speed or all around (because sturdiness is only really important for the leader). Ice Hockey Controllers: Gamepad for first player, Wii Remote Plus for any others (horizontally) Controls: 1. G: Press A at the faceoff when it hits the ground to hit the puck to a teammate. W: Press 2 at the faceoff when it hits the ground to hit the puck to a teammate 2. G: Turn the left analog stick to move your character. W: Use the arrow pad to move your character 3. G: Press B when in possession of the puck to pass to a teammate. W: Press 1 when in possession of the puck to pass to a teammate. 4. G: Press A when in possession of the puck to shoot. W: Press 2 when in possession of the puck to shoot. 5. G: Press A when not in possession of the puck to body check your opponent (steal the puck). W: Press 2 when not in possession of the puck to body check your opponent (steal the puck) 6.G: Press Y to perform a flip the puck trick. W: Press to perform a flip the puck trick 7. G: Press on the direction you want to go twice on the left analog to perform a dash trick. W: Press on the direction you want to go twice on the arrow pad to perform a dash trick. 8. G: Spin the left analog stick quickly to perform a spin trick. W: Spin the arrow pad quickly to perform a spin trick. 9. G: After activating the powershot (explained below), swipe with the stylus in the direction you want to shoot. 10. G: If your opponent initiates a power shot, tilt left and right on the left analog stick to move and press A to jump to block the shot. The objective of this game is to work with your team to score more goals then your opponents. Your opposing goalie (Shy Guy) is pretty good at defending random shots. So how to counter? There are 4 solid ways I have found at scoring. One involves charging up your powershot meter and shooting a power shot. To charge up your power meter, you need to perform tricks. The dash trick (#7) is good for when you have the puck and need to break away from your opposition. The flip trick (#6) is good for when you get the puck defending your goal to change directions to run to the opposing side. The spin trick (#8) is best for when you are surrounded and need to clear some room. If you perform tricks well, you will power your meter, and lower your opponent's so do them often. Regardless of how you do it, once your meter is charged you can press A to activate your powershot. What you want to do is get close to the goalie without any interfering players in the way (except possibly one of your own). Just shoot for where Shy Guy isn't. An alternative is power shooting towards a teammate who will then shoot I believe an instant goal (or at least a very likely goal). The other three methods are shown in diagrams below. Diagram 1: -=ice -------x x=starting character -------| G] |=pass route -------| ] o=second character who immediately shoots -------| ] G=Goalie -------o ]=goal Basically, you want to shoot where the goalie won't be fast enough to get to (in this case the bottom) so that you can easily score. Also works on the flip side too (start at bottom and pass to top). Diagram 2: -------x G] -=ice -------| ] x=starting position --------o ] |=Travel route (skating) G=Goalie o=stop position and shoot here This is very similar to the previous one but this time you use just one player who is fast to skate from top to bottom of the goal (or bottom to top) and shoot at the edge to score.Just be careful to not run into the goalie and give it to him. Diagram 3: -------- -=ice -------x ] x=character -------- G ] G=Goalie -------- o] ]=goal -------- o=where the shot should end up This one is hard to diagram, but essentially, you want to be near the center and shoot in the opposite area with a strong shooter. In the example above, the shooter is slightly above the center, so he shoots to the bottom of the goal with a strong shot to probably score. This one is the least reliable. Recommended Characters (Ice Hockey): The most important stats in this one are speed and shooting ability. Speed makes a lot of scoring oppurtunities easier and shooting can snag a couple extra goal as well. So you should make your team have a balance of speed and power characters (or possibly switching out the powers for some all arounds for more speed). Curling Controllers: Wii Remote Plus for all, Gamepad is used for the layout of the area Controls: 1. Swing remote up to test strength (practice), hold B and swing for the real throw. 2. Tilt the remote left or right to curve the stone in the given direction 3. Shake the remote to sweep (push the stone farther by making the ice easier to travel on) 4. Press - to initiate 'Strategy Time' on the Gamepad 5. Using the stylus during Strategy Time, you can draw a line that you want the stone to travel on, or place markers to tell when to sweep or the final location Curling is a little known very complicated strategy and teamwork sport. The goal of this event is to earn points by having your stone be closer to the center of the house (big red/white/blue circle). The more you have closest to the center, the more points you will earn. However if an opposing stone is closer than one of your second stones but you have one closest to the center, you will only get one point. The person throwing first has the disadvantage over the player throwing last because the second throwing player can easily knock out stones thrown by the first player. Players alternate between the 3 different positions: Thrower, Sweeper, and Planner. There are 2 sweepers whose sweeping stats affect how far your stone will go from sweeping. Thet thrower obviously throws the stone, and the Planner creates a strategy (if you want it, it is not needed) Every game is different, so it is hard for me to give stategies for everything but here are some general ones. A: If you are starting, Try putting a guard stone in front of the house. If you need a reference, watch the computer, they always do that. However, you should throw the guard stone to be somewhere in the front of the blue part of the house so that it is at least in the game somewhat. B: If your opponent throw a stone and curves it behind your guard stone, hit the guard stone with one of your stones as hard as you can so that the guard stone will knock the opposing stone out of the way and rest in the center while the second stone becomes the new guard stone. C: If your opponent throws a stone in the back of the red circle in the house, try to throw your stone right in front of it (WITHOUT knocking it out). That way, you should be closer to the center than your opponent, and it will be extremely difficult for your opponent to knock yours out. D: If your opponent has a dangerous stone near the center that is not defended and not in the back, use one of yours to knock theirs out of the house to rid the danger (but beware of your opponent doing the same to you). E: Hit the side of an opposing stone to knock theirs to the side and yours to the opposite side. You can use this to your advantage by hitting theirs to the side out of the house (thereby out of it and useless) and yours close(r) to the center. F: Try to defend your stones in the center by putting another of your stones in front of it, making it difficult to knock away (and also giving you a chance of getting 2 points). If you need other strategies, go to strategy time in game and hit 'Optimal Plan' which will tell you the best plan (sometimes). When you get good, follow your instincts, because you can probably come up with better plans than the computer Recommended Characters (Curling): All characters are generally act the same in this event. Throwing is good for knocking stones away so having a power character wouldn't hurt. Sweeping ability is also very good if you undershoot a lot (like I do) because it boosts the effects of sweeping so speed characters are good too. The characters aren't vastly different in this one, so just choose a team and get at it. DREAM EVENTS These events are much more fun fantasy versions of the normal events set in Mario or Sonic stages/levels. Generally they use items or some gimmick to make it more interesting than the normal event. Again, I will use the abbreviations G for Gamepad and W for Wii Remote Plus in the controls section, and I will include the character recommendations section as well. Look above in the STATS section if you want to know what the stats affect. An asterick (*) is placed by Winter Sports Champion Race to signify it is available online Winter Sports Champion Race(*) Controllers: Wii Remote Plus for all Controls: 1. Charge up power with B, swing remote down at GO to start. 2. Tilt the remote left and right to turn 3. Swing the remote up at the tip of ramps to jump 4. Lean/Tilt the remote forward to crouch and go faster 5. (Snowboard only) Tilt the remote left and right on grinding rails to stay balanced 6. (Ski Only) Swing the remote down upon landing to get a landing boost. 7. (Snowboard only) Align your snowboard to the ground through tilting the remote to get a landing boost 8. (Snowboard only) Hold B and tilt the remote to drift 9. (Speed Skates only) Press A to activate your special boost This is a very interesting race where 4 competitors race through a course using Skis, Snowboards, Speed Skates, and Bobsleighs. How does this work? Well you will shortly see in the race that there are 4 doors to enter, 2 white/light blue, and 2 dark blue. The white doors will contain either a snowboard or skis, and the blue doors will contain either ice skates or bobsleighs. The color signifies what the vehicle or equipment is good at travelling: Skis/snowboards are fast on snow and slow on ice, Skates/Bobsleighs are fast on ice and slow on snow. The last section of the race which is neither ice or snow is neutral, all equipment travels equally fast on it. If you are in first, it is all chance what you receive upon going through any door (but it will match with the color). However, if you are lower than first, when the first player goes through a door, the spinning roulette above the door of the same color will stop and show what you will get upon entering. Use this to your advantage to get what you want. Now about the different equipment. Skis are very balanced and have no special characteristics, except that they excel at jumping and can jump greater distances than any other can. Snowboards have poor jumping ability but can drift and take shortcuts via grinding rails than other equipment can not. Speed Skates are slower than all the others, but they can take shortcuts (thin strips of ice) that other equipment can't (except bobsleigh if you are really skilled and lucky). To compensate the low speed, the game gives you a special boost upon receiving ice skates than you can activate to singificantly boost your speed (just don't use them on the shortcuts or else you will fall off). Bobsleighs are big and can push opponents aside which can be very fun and annoying to your opponents ;). They also can break walls on ice easily that other equipment can't, but the bobsleigh is so big that turning is difficult (I also believe it is the fastest). To help you travel the best routes for your equipment, beacons of light will appear showing you where you can utilize your equipment's advantages (such as showing you where grinding rails or ice skate shorrtcuts are). What's the best equipment to use? There is no best, it all depends on what you are good at using and that you make sure that you stay on either ice or snow depending on your equipment Recommended Characters (WSC Race): There is no best character or group of characters in this event. It all is dependant on what you are good at. I personally like using skis and ice skates so I like the speed characters. The skills are good at snowboarding and the powers are good at bobsleigh, all around obviously decent at everything, so choose depending on what you like and can use the best. Groove Pipe Snowboard Controllers: Gamepad for first player, Wii Remote Plus for any others Controls: 1. W: Hold B and tilt the remote to drift. This event is just a more interesting version of snowboard cross in the famous Mushroom Bridge course from Mario Kart Double Dash. That being said, there are a lot of boosts, jumps, and grinding rails that you will need to use to speed up and get good records. One thing you will notice is that there are sections of the course made up of a light blue panel, and that when you ride on it, it will create a yellow path. This yellow path is a boost line that you can use in the second lap of the race to speed yourself up. You want to collect as many coins as you can, because they speed you up and make the dash panels more powerful and long lasting. Here are some important ramps and shortcuts to take. First after the cannon shot and a couple turns there will be a ramp with lots of coins, jump it and travel staright and land on the red and yellow dash panels and it will speed you up tremendously but make it much harder to control for a little bit so be careful. Next, a la Double Dash, take the boosts on either of the bridge railings (either will work, I find the left one easier to take) and stay on it until you reach a ramp (dont jump on this one, it will automatically). This ramp will make you do some cool tricks like in the cannon and give you a huge boost over your opponents. Finally, you will see a ramp with a grinding rail, you want to take that rail and the following dash panels to the finish line and repeat the process on the second lap. This should get you a pretty good time. Recommended Characters (Groove Pipe): This event has identical stats to snowboard cross and the uses of the stats are the same, so you want to use either a good drifting speed character, or a good speed all around character. Mario Figure Skating Spectacular Controllers: Wii Remote Plus for all Controls: 1. When yellow arrows appear around your character and 'STEP' is at the top of the screen, swing the remote in the direction of the arrow when the small circle at the start closes around it (it will go to the rhythm most of the time if my description is confusing). 2. When 'SPIRAL' appears at the top of the screen, balance the remote on the pink line to avoid falling 3. When 'JUMP' appears, swing the remote at the center of the glowing red circles and spin it quickly while in midair to perform spin jumps. 4. When 'SPIN' appears, spin the remote quickly to perform a spin 5. When 'WAVE' appears, extend the remote to your side and raise and lower it to collect the blue music notes/coins. 6. When 'POSE AT 0' appears, get ready to spin for a while and then pose as shown on the screen. This event controls and is incredibly similar to normal Figure skating except that the competitors go through a Mario adventure to save some Toads from Kamek and Bowser (which is kinda awkward when you play as Bowser...). If you are having trouble seeing the steps by looking at your character then look at your opponents because they have the same moves (big bulky dark ones like Bowser and DK are easier).Get into the music and perform your moves to the beat (helps if you know these songs, 3D Land was awesome) Recommended Characters (M Figure Skating): The stats are identical to normal Figure skating and the importances are still the same. So, keep using skill characters to figure skate and get the best results. Sonic's Figure Skating Spectacular Controllers: Wii Remote Plus for all Controls: 1. When 'WAVE' appears, extend the remote to your side and raise and lower it to collect the blue music notes/rings. 6. When 'POSE AT 0' appears, get ready to spin for a while and then pose as shown on the screen. This event again is very similar to normal figure skating, except this time the competitors must rescue wisps from some eye monster (sorry guys, no ideas what that thing is). If you are having trouble seeing the steps by looking at your character then look at your opponents because they have the same moves (big bulky dark ones like Bowser and DK are easier). Get into the music and perform your moves to the beat. Roller Coaster Bobsleigh Controllers: Gamepad for first player, Wii Remote Plus for any others Controls: 1. G: Hold ZL and ZR to charge power, swing down at GO to start. W: Hold B to charge power, swing down at GO to start. 2. G: Rapidly tap ZL and ZR to run fast in boarding preparation. W: Rapidly shake the remote up and down to run fast in boarding preparation. 3. G/W: Swing up to board the bobsleigh at the red line 4. G/W: Tilt the system/remote to turn 5. G/W: In the sideways view portions of the race, tilt the system/remote to match the angle of the bobsleigh to the angle of the ground. This is a simple driving race without an acceleration or brake button. You want to collect as many rings as you can because they speed you up and make the dash panels more powerful and long lasting. At a couple times during the race, the camera will turn sideways making the game 2D and all you need to do is perform successful landing boosts to get going faster (they work just like snowboard landing boosts). Watch out for ice monsters because they will significantly slow you down and they are hard to see until its too late. Other than that there's nothing to it Recommended Characters (Roller Bobsleigh): The stats are the same as in normal bobsleigh, except in this event, speed is slightly more important than sturdiness becuase there is no boost line here. Even though there is a change, I still suggest you use power characters but with high speed as well as high sturdiness. Snow Day Street Hockey Controllers: Gamepad for first player, Wii Remote Plus for any others Controls: 1. W: Press (?) to perform a flip the puck trick 7. This is a much more fun version of hockey set in the famous Delfino Island. The basics are the same as well as the controls, score more goals than your opponent to win. All of the scoring techniques work in this as well so look above under 'Ice Hockey' to see them. However, this is a dream event so it's gotta be interresting, so there are 3 different courts and all of them have them have their own unique obstacles. The only real addition to the event is the inclusion of bonus goal oppurtunities, gold cages that when shot in give you 2 points. Obviously you want to score them whenever available. I will go in depth to the stages below... Main Street: This stage is shaped like a circle and is the simplest of the three. The center of the area is higher than the rest of the court, so it is harder to climb up but easier to come down. The other obstacle is the holes in the walls. Shooting the puck into these holes will cause a pianta to become angry and throw the puck as a shell out the window. This shell puck is very powerful, going through any player including the goalie with ease. So if you get it, shoot accurately as soon as possible and keep it from your opponents at all costs. The time when the bonus goal is activated is random, but look in the windows when you see it say it is active on the screen. Market Street: This stage is shaped like a normal hockey court except it is longer and thinner with an extra add on at both goals. One feature is the orange bouncer mushrooms. If you skate into these mushrooms, you will bounce really high and be unreachable (but you can't move very far). If you shoot from higher up, it makes it harder for the goalie to block it, thereby easier to score goals. Another obstacle is thatthere are piles of bananas being sold under the tents. If you run into them, or the puck does, it will cause there to be a bunch of banana peels on the ground that when stepped on make you slip. Use these to cause a lot of havoc around the area you want. When you hear church/clock bells ringing, there will be a bonus goal oppurtunity, so dash to the center where the clock is and shoot without being interrupted to get it. Coin Street. This is a very wide area with lots of blocks and elevated areas on the left and right ends of the court. Firstly, as I said, there are lots of blocks blocking your progress so you need to manuever around them to get to the opposition's goal. A way around that is to hit a P button (blue) on the ground that turns blocks around it into coins like in the Mario games for a limited time. If the coins are gotten, after the time runs out, the blocks will be gone allowing you to go through the once-blocked area. If you collect 8 coins, you will cause a bonus goal oppurtunity on one ends of the court so get over there and score. One startegy here might be to just go for bonus goals with the coins, not even caring about the goal with the shy guy goalie. Recommended Characters (Snow Hockey): The game is mostly the same in terms of character picking in snow hockey over ice hockey. Speed is mostly even more important than power (shooting) here because of the bonus goals, so use mostly fast characters to get the job done. Hole in One Curling Controllers: Gamepad (solo) Gamepad and Wii Remote Plus alternating (multiplayer) Controls: 1. (Solo and Multiplayer Co-op) Using the stylus, hold the glowing stone and flick it on the touch screen of the gamepad to throw your stone 2. (Solo) Tilt the gamepad left and right to turn. Lean forward to go a little farther, Lean closer to you to slow down. (Multiplayer Co-op) Tilt the Wii Remote Plus left and right to turn. Lean forward to go a little farther, lean closer to you to slow down. 3. (Solo and Multiplayer Co-op) Hold with the stylus on places with arrows on the gamepad to freeze the obstacle making it easier to use it to your advantage 4. (Solo and Multiplayer) In the fourth hole, when towers fall from above, rapidly tap the parts to destroy them to get by safely) This is an interesting version of curling in a golf course setting in Green Hill Zone where one person pushes the stone and another player rides it. First I will discuss the controlling differences. If you are playing solo or mulitplayer versus (not team versus), each player only uses the Gamepad. If you are playing co-op mode, the pusher will use the gamepad while the rider uses the Wii Remote Plus. Now the goal of the pusher is to send the rider in the right direction and most of the time with as much power as possible (unless you are close to the goal). The rider needs to lean in the different directions to make the stone go where he/she wants (it is not very easy to control however). There are 4 different holes all with a couple different routes, I will write my thoughts on how to complete each below. One interesting thing is that if there is a tie for first place after all of the holes are played, there will be a tie break. The tie break is where you need to push your stone to be as close to the line as possible (but if you push it off the ledge, you can basically kiss the win good bye). What you want to do is flick it lightly, too much power will cost you the win. Hole 1 Suggestions: I like the left route a lot better than the right because the boost ramps are very hard to use and control. So my startegy is to push as hard as you can to get at least down the first hill on the left (even better is down both of the hills). Assuming you got only down the first hill, either push hard and try to hit the right side of the bumper closer to the hole to hopefully score, or push lightly so that you have a direct shot at the goal next turn. If you get down both hills, just go for the direct shot. Hole 2 Suggestions:Two routes again, and I prefer the right one (again the boost ramps make you completely out of control and rarely help you. First throw, you want to push hard and get onto the middle of the circle with ramps circling around it. Second throw you want to push to the dash panel at the edge of the area (hold down on it to make sure it is pointing left so you don't go the wrong way and waste a turn. If you did it well, you should be able to get to the hole with your added momentum. If not, then just do a light push to get to the hole. Hole 3 Suggestions: This is a very simple hole down a downwards sloped hill littered with many obstacles, mostly rocks and bumpers. Rocks will slow your stone significantly so don't hit any of them. Bumpers will shoot your stone in the direction depending on how you hit it. For the first throw, you want to push towards the right into the gap between the obstacles and then carefully guide yourself down the hill avoiding all obstacles. Its pretty hard to slip through the four bumpers at the end, but if you can get through you have a very good chance of getting a hole-in-one. Hole 4 Suggestions: The most complicated and longest hole with a lot of different paths to take. For the first throw, I recommend pushing at the very edge of the mud but not touching, then tilting left to hit the dash panel and propel yourself up the hill (just don't fall off into the lower area, that will only be bad). Along the way on the course, random towers will fall, so rapidly tap the parts of the tower you need destroyed to pass safely. Second throw try to push to a distant dash panel to the right (it would be best if you hit it this turn). Upon hitting it, veer right, avoiding the big hill and staying level and push as far as you can. The next throw might be complicated by some bumpers, but should be an easy and direct shot at the goal Recommended Characters (Hole Curling): Pushing power and Riding ability are both very important in this event. So, you want one power character (pushing power) and one speed (riding ability). Remember you want to be strategic, the first chosen character will be the pusher on holes 1 and 3, the second pusher on 2 and 4. Choose the order depending on what you need more in each hole Snowball Scrimmage Controllers: Gamepad for first player, Wii Remote Plus (horizontal) for any others Controllers: 1. G: Use left analog stick to move. W: Use arrow pad to move 2. G: Press A to shoot snowballs. W: Press 1 to shoot snowballs 3. G: Hold A to charge up bigger snowballs and release to shoot. W: Hold 3. G: Press B to lock on to a target. Press again to change targets. W: Press 2 to lock on to a target. Press again to change targets 4. G: When in a cannon shooter, hold A to charge power for the jump, and let go to jump. W: When in a cannon shooter, hold 2 to charge power for the jump, and let go to jump. 5. G/W: Run into the snowflake ball with no one on it to board it. The goal of this event is to battle in teams of 2 to bring the giant gold snowflake ball to your goal by riding on it (the goal is behind where you start and an icon will show if you are riding it). This is complicated by the fact that you have snowball guns to pelt each other with, and each player has a health bar which drops upon being hit. You are able to charge up your snowball gun to shoot bigger snowballs that can stun an opponent if you hit them. If you see an opponent who is glowing with a yellow or red light, hit them quickly to stop his/her charging process. If you manage to drop an opponent's health bar all the way, they will be out of the game for a couple seconds and then transported back to their starting position. There aren't many ways to score but here is the way I find more reliable. What you want to do is either ride the ball and have your partner kill your opponents, or do the reverse, have your partner ride the ball and you kill the opponents so they can't interfere with your rider. This is difficult to counter, the best way is to split up and try to take the rider down by shooting snowballs at him/her so that the partner can only focus on one of you. You will also notice there are cannons on the four cardinal ends of the arena. These cannons will shoot you further depending on how much you charge but they leave you wide open to attack so I do not recommend it. The only viable time to use it is if you managed to shoot the rider off when they were nearly at the goal, ride to the cannon and shoot yourself over the gate to severely slow down your opponent. If you are winning by 2 points, a shortcut (the center gate) will open for the losing team to get through much easier to the goal. This may be a strategy if you are confident, let your opponent score twice so you get a huge advantage and can win with enough skill. Also, there are rainbow panels on the ground that restore your health upon standing on them. I only recommend using them after you are sent back to your starting positions after someone scores; you don't want to waste time in the heat of the match healing. Recommended Characters (Sball Scrimmage): Speed and riding ability are at the top most priority for this one. Strength it not very important. So you want to have either a speed character with a lot of riding ability, or a skill player with a lot of speed. Bullet Bill Sledge Race Controllers: Gamepad for first player, Wii Remote Plus for any others (horizontal) Controls: G: Hold ZL and ZR to charge power during chargeup, swing down at GO to start. W: Hold 1 to charge power during chargeup, swing down at GO to start 2. G/W: Tilt the system/controller left and right to turn 3. G/W: Swing system/controller up at the tip of ramps to jump 4. G: Press ZL and ZR to activate rocket boosts. W: Press 1 (?) to activate rocket boosts The goal of this 2 player event is to steer your bullet bill sleigh through a land full of sweets and chocolate to get the finish first. This is mostly just a standard car race without an accelerator or brake. To gain an edge over your opponents, you need to gather small blue orbs which will fill a boost meter on the right hand side. When you get a rocket boost, it is usually best to activate it immediately, but you want to stay out of the air for as long as possible because it is wasting the boost. The boosts are most useful for going through obstacles and chocolate to cut corners and find shortcuts. If you steer into rings, they will propel you up and forward a bit so try to use them to your advantage. One noteable short cut is in the second lap after the tunnel that spins you around, look right and aim for some rings that will lead you to a secret ledge and will make that final section a lot easier. Recommended Characters (BB Sledge): You are going to want a fast character for this one because speed is the most important stat here. Go with a speed character with at least decent cornering (that's pretty important too) or a skill character with a lot of speed. LEGENDS SHOWDOWN This is the adventure mode of the game, where the 20 competitors are working together to get the giant trophy locked behind 6 gates with 6 keys. The mode is very simple, there are 5 areas (plus one final one) where 4 competitors are working together to get one key. The last one is with all the characters able to get the last key. The 4 competitors must first fight shadow versions of themselves in 3,4, or 5 events and then must take on a rival from the Mario or Sonic Series. You get points for winning against the shadows, you get more points if you beat them by a larger margin. After defeating a rival, a key appears and you proceed to the next area. After clearing an area, you will get a ranking based on the number of total points. In this section, I will say the character that will get you the best results, and will add any extra info when needed. If you need help with any of the events, look about under the OLYMPIC EVENTS or DREAM EVENTS section. Area 1 Characters: Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Sonic, Tails Event 1: Alpine- DK or Sonic Event 2: Speed Skating 500- Sonic or Yoshi Event 3: Snowboard Cross- Sonic or Yoshi Event 4 (Rival Birdo): Ice Hockey- All Area 2 Characters: Amy, Knuckles, Wario, Waluigi Event 1: Figure Skating Singles- Amy or Waluigi Event 2: Biathlon- Wario or Knuckles Event 3: Skeleton- Wario or Knuckles Event 4 (Rival Magikoopa): Bullet Bill Sledge- Amy and Waluigi Area 3 Characters: Daisy, Luigi, Shadow, Vector Event 1: Bobsleigh- All Event 2: Snowball Scrimmage- Shadow and Daisy Event 3: Curling- All Event 4: Snow Day Street Hockey- All Event 5 (Rival Jet): Snowboard Parallel Slalom- Luigi or Shadow Area 4 Characters: Mario, Peach, Silver, Blaze Event 1: Moguls- Peach or Silver Event 2: Groove Pipe Snowboard- Mario or Blaze Event 3: Figure Skating Pairs- Silver and Peach Event 4: Hole in One Curling- Mario and Blaze Event 5 (Rival King Boo: Short Track 1000m- Mario or Blaze Area 5 Characters: Bowser, Bowser Jr, Dr Eggman, Metal Sonic Event 1: Ski Cross- Metal Sonic, or Bowser Jr Event 2: Snowboard Slopestyle- Dr. Eggman Event 3: M/S Figure Skating Spectacular- Dr Eggman Event 4: Ski Jump- Bowser or Bowser Jr Event 5 (Rival Omega): Roller Coaster Bobsleigh- Bowser or Bowser Jr Area 6 Characters: All playable characters Event (Rivals Rouge, Eggman Nega, Dry Bowser): Winter Sports Champion Race- Depends on what equipment you are best with, I personally like speed characters MEDLEY MANIA This mode is akin to the circuit mode in the original Beijing Olympic games. Basically 4 people compete in 3 or 4 olympic/dream events consecutively earning points for better performances (4 for 1st, 3 for 2nd, 2 for 3rd, 1 for 4th). However, if you are playing a 8 player event, you just need to be the best of your 4 competitors (meaning you can take 2nd but get 1st place if all did worse than you). There are 8 premade medleys, and you also have the option to create a custom medley which can have up to 5 events in a row. Sonic Stage Medley Event 1: Roller Coaster Bobsleigh Event 2: Hole in One Curling Event 3: Bullet Bill Sledge Race Event 4: Sonic's Figure Skating Spectacular Recommended Characters: Power Characters because they are great at both bobsleigh and Hole in One Curling. Try to get one with decent skill for the Figure Skating Mario Stage Medley Event 1: Groove Pipe Snowboard Event 2: Snow Day Street Hockey Event 3: Snowball Scrimmage Event 4: Mario's Figure Skating Spectacular Recommended Characters: Speed Characters because they are great a Snowball Scrimmage and Snow Hockey, and good at Groove Pipe. Use one with decent skill as well for Figure Skating Jumping Medley Event 1: Ski Jump Event 2: Snowboard Slopestyle Event 3: Moguls Recommended Characters: Skill Characters are the best for this one, excelling at Slopestyle and Moguls and being pretty good at Ski Jump too. Teamwork Medley Event 1: Bullet Bill Sledge Race Event 2: Curling Event 3: Ice Hockey Recommended Characters: Speed Characters are the best for this one being great at all the events because of their sweeping and moving skills Ice Medley Event 1: Figure Skating Singles Event 2: Figure Skating Pairs Event 3: Mario's Figure Skating Spectacular Event 4: Sonic's Figure Skating Spectacular Recommended Characters: Skill Characters definitely because all the events are figure skating and the skill characters are best at figure skating Lock-on Medley Event 1: Snowball Scrimmage Event 2: Curling Event 3: Biathlon Recommended Characters: Speed Characters are you best bet here because of your advantage in Snowball Scrimmage and Curling. Try to pick one with decent power (power=more stamina) to help out in Biathlon Speed Medley Event 1: Alpine Skiing Event 2: Speed Skating 500m Event 3: Skeleton Event 4: Snowboard Giant Parallel Slalom Recommended Characters: Speed Characters are the best obviously because of the name! (and because they have the best stats for all the events except Skeleton) Racing Medley Event 1: Snowboard Cross Event 2: Short Track 1000m Event 3: Ski Cross Event 4: Winter Sports Champion Race Recommended Characters: Speed Characters are again your best option becuase they are generally the best at racing events (which this entire medley consists of) ACTION AND ANSWER TOUR This is an interesting attraction hosted by Orbot and Cubot, where contestants must complete specific goals in the Olympic events to get the correct 'answer'. Most of these have nothing to do with the normal events so thats what makes it more fun. You can play tours with 4, 6, or 8 'actions (events)'. You earn points for getting a correct answer and you all compete to get the most points. Every couple rounds or so there is a 'random chance' which will cause some random event to happen (I will list them below). All the controls in the events are the same in this, so look under the corresponding event to see them if needed. All of the actions that I know of will be listed and explained below. If there are any that I missed, email me them (address is in intro). Alpine Actions Thwomp and Answer (Competitive)-In this game there are 4 gates with thwomps at each of them. Before the race starts, a thwomp will crash down and cause the wii remote plus to rumble. Remember the rumble and pass through each gate looking for an identical rumble and choose that gate at the goal line. Ski Jump Actions Midair Catch and Answer (Competitive)- In this game, there will be a picture of a character at the end of the ramp. Remember that character, and run into the big balloons with the same character on them to get the most points. Whoever gets the most point wins. Midair Formation and Answer (Competitive)- In this game, after you jump a bunch of koopas and buzzers will fly out into the air in front of you and begin to form a shape. The longer you are in the air, the closer to completion the shape will be. Memorize the shape and choose that pattern after landing. Ski Cross Actions Route Recall and Answer (Competitive)- This is a short portion of the normal course with big gates divided into 2, one side is safe, the other has crates which severely slow you down. The gates that are safe are shown at the beginning. Memorize the order of the safe gates and ski through to the finish line Scratch and Answer (Competitive)- This is a very simple event where you must navigate along a simple track skiing over a scratch card of sorts on the snow. While skiing on the scratch card, you want to find a shiny star pattern underneath. Look at the gamepad after all have passed the scratch card and look for which number is shiny starred and ski into that gate ? (I only played it once and didn't get to write it) (Cooperative)- This is one of very few team events where 2 pairs of two compete against each other. The goal of the teams is to collect the most correct color balloons (red or blue depending on which team you are) in the short race. If you collect an incorrect one, you give a point to the other team so refrain from doing that Biathlon Actions Quick Shot and Answer (Competitive)- This game is a quick one where a cannon shoots a symbol from a far distance. You need to memorize the shape and pattern on the shape and shoot the symbol first, choosing correctly to win. You need to be extremely fast to do this one well Search and Answer (Competitive)- In this game, you need to ski through the course looking from characters from the Mario and Sonic franchises. You need to find five of them and get to the end first. When you reach the end, you need to shoot the pictures of the characters in the correct order you found them to get points and win Snowboard Parallel Giant Slalom Actions Speed Chase and Answer (Competitive)- In this very simple game, you are pitted against a rival and must race to the finish line where a bunch of different snowflakes are. At the beginning you are shown a snowflake, just memorize the color, and snowboard into that snowflake before your opponent to win Snowboard Slopestyle Actions Try Your Luck and Answer (Competitive)- In this luck based game you must travel through the slopestyle course without ramps, and must ride on the trick rails or grinding rails to run into barrels. Upon crashing into a barrel you will get a random amount of rings. Hope to get the most rings to win Snowboard Cross Actions Pursue and Action (Competitive)- In this game, you are given the task to look for a random character in the course. Once you find that character, remember who he/sheis, and snowboard through the gate with his/her face on it. Short Track Actions Dice Throw and Answer (Competitive)- In this game you are skating around the rink running into a giant die. The goal of running into the die is to 'roll' it and see all the faces (sides) of the die. On each side of the die there is a number and a color, you want to look for the number that appears twice. Use the colors to help you, if you see a number that has two different colors that's the one you want. Choose that one at the end to win Boo Hunt and Answer (Competitive)- In this game, the Gamepad displays the live video broadcast of an invisible Boo. Based on this footage, you need to locate where the Boo is and run into him first to win Eyeball and Answer (Competitive)- In this game, you need to locate a specific point on the track at a certain distance (specified at the beginning of the game). There will be a counter at the top right of the TV screen displaying how far you have travelled but slowly blotting out some of the numbers, making you need to guess where the specific point is. Whoever gets the closest wins Figure Skating Actions Roulette and Answer (Competitive)- In this luck based game, you need to perform a spin to get your roulette moving. The roulette has points on it that you want to aim for. The faster you spin, the smaller the point panels are, but the greater they are worth so spin depending on how confident you are. Press A to slowly stop spinning and hope your cursor lands on the point value you want. Copycat and Answer (Competitive)- In this game, you will first watch a performance of only steps performed by an AI. You want to memorize the general direction of the steps (for example, if the arrow goes up, swinging down or up will work) and perform that after the AI's performances. Or you could just randomly swing the remote hoping you get the right direction... Bobsleigh Actions Bullet Bill Shuffle and Answer (Competitive)- In this game, you will be racing through the bobsleigh course without the boosts, following a bullet bill. More bullet bills will fly with you as the race goes on, keeping your eye on the original bullet bill that was in the entire race and choose that bullet bill at the finish line. Ice Hockey Actions Goal Shoot and Answer (Competitive)- In this stupid game, you compete in hockey to answer the question provided in the beginning of the match (they are very simple questions: who is in first place, who is player one etc). You need to get the puck and shoot into the goal with the character's face on it to win. Curling Actions Takeout and Answer (Competitive)- In this game, the house is filled with a lot of stones, big and small. Your goal is to knock as many out as you can (smaller are worth more points). There's a lot of luck, but try to hit the big ones with a lot of force so they will run into the smaller ones and hopefully knock them out Fan Blower and Answer (Cooperative)- In this game, two teams of two compete to find the hidden picture in the house. The picture is hidden by a thick layer of smoke that can't be seen through unless you use fans that are conveniently located on top of your stones. With some luck, you want your stones to cover as much ground as possible so you can catch a glimpse of the mystery picture. The less stones you use, the more points you get. Random Events These happen every couple rounds where a random event ensues. Here they are: Recovery Chance- This is a rare one, where a x2 panel is given to the player in last place, making all the points received in the next turn multiplied by 2 to help give him/her a boost. Steal Chance- This event allows the winner to steal 10 points from any opponent he/she chooses. Use this to take down your opponents while helping yourself to win Lucky Chance- This is a luck event where there are 4 cards with certain numbers of points on them. All players choose one and get the number of points on it. Bonus Point Chance- The winner of the previous event is given the ability to hit a button giving him/her extra points (for a total of 11-17 points) Selection Chance- This event enables the competitors to vote on an event that will be played next round. The event chosen is by majority, if there is no majority, it will be chosen randomly. M&S TV This is the TV set within the game where you can find many channels with lots of fun stuff. It is kinda useless but may be of some interest to you if you have a lot of friends who play this game. ONLINE/MIIVERSE Online New to this game is an online mode where you can actually compete against people from around the globe. As great as this is, you can only play 4 events in online so get good at these. They are Ski Cross, Snowboard Cross, Short Track 1000m, and Winter Sports Champion Race. In online mode, you choose one of the four events, and then can choose to play with any friends you have, or around the world. Every time you win, you will get strength points which when gotten in large amounts, give you special titles. Also, every time you compete online, you receive 10 challenge points which you can use to take away the ????s in front of vital words in the special challenge channel if you do not want to use the list above.Every week, a new count starts where all the countries compete for the top place in each event. To help your country, you need to play events over and over getting as many strength points and 1st places as you can. Miiverse Also new to this game is the inclusion of Miiverse. After getting a new record in any event during single event mode, Omochao will come and ask you for an interview. You are then prompted to write any advice or whatever you want to post to Miiverse about this event. These messages will then be shown on the gamepad when playing a game that does not use the gamepad (such as Figure Skating). After the Miiverse section, he will then ask you to take a picture which you are forced to do. You can allow your friends to see them if you hit yes when it says 'Trade with Friends?' RECORDS As always, I will write down my records for all the events, except this time I can write down the events that don't have a record system due to the usefullness of Channel 2: Road to Victory.
