I'd appreciate it if you let me know by sending me an email, which is all in the "Credits and Legal Info" section of the guide (at the end). Also, if you have any suggestions or ideas that you'd like to be put into the guide, please, let me know! I'd love to make this guide better. ######################################################################### ### ### ### TABLE OF CONTENTS [tofcs] ### ### ### ######################################################################### I. THE BASICS [basic] ### ### ### ######################################################################### ======================= A. What Is Stick Arena? [what?] ======================= Hopefully, if you're reading this guide, you know what Stick Arena is. But this section is here just in case you don't. Stick Arena is a topdown shooter game, where you battle people from a bird's- eye view. The thing that makes it special is its online capabilities. You can log in from any computer that has an internet connection and Flash Player. In Stick Arena, you control a stick figure, and you pick up and use a variety of weapons to kill your enemies. The person with the most kills at the end of a match is the winner. Here's the URL. http://www.xgenstudios.com/play/stickarena/ ======================= B. How To Start Playing [howst] ======================= After the opening cinematic, you'll be put on the main menu. On this menu, you can choose to log in or create an account, learn to play, or you can press Quick Start to skip all of that and start playing. The disadvantage to that is that your scores are not saved. If you hit Quick Play, skip down to section C. Logging in or creating an account is pretty easy. To create an account, just put in your desired name and password, choose your color, and you're in the Lobby. If you have an account, hit Log In, type your username and password, and you'll be put into the Lobby. In the Lobby, there are three main parts of the screen. Most of the screen is taken up by the chat box. Simply type something in and everyone in the server will see it. On the top-right, you can choose the server. If you have a slow connection, click the box at the top-right, and select Compatibility Server. If your connection is fast, choose any of the others. This will change which games you see. Below this box are the games you can choose from. Click one that you wish to join and click Join Game below to join it. Below the games list is a list of players in the server. Click on any one of them to see their rank and other statistics at the bottom of the screen. The bottom-right of the screen has various actions. If you've selected a game, you can click Join Game to join. Join Private will bring up a text box. Enter the name of a private game and you'll connect to it. Create Game allows you to choose the level and other settings you wish to have, and then other people may join your game. Log Out, surprisingly, logs you out. ============== C. How To Play [howpl] ============== Ingame ------ Once you're playing, you'll see your character around the center of the screen. You can move him/her around (see Controls), pick up weapons, and shoot. On the top-left of the HUD, you can see your health. In the middle is your name and place in the game (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th). On the top-right, you can see your weapon. On the bottom-left, there are two icons. One of them is a speech bubble that allows you to talk to other people in the game. The gear icon, when clicked, will pop up a number of settings. These settings are obvious and need no explanation. On the bottom-right, you can see your performance. FPS stands for Frames Per Second. The higher that number, the smoother the visual. Ping will tell you how fast your internet connection is to the server. The lower that number is, the smoother the game. If you open up the Leaderboard (see Controls), it will show all of the players in the game, and their standing and score. There is also a little red X next to their name. If you click it, you can vote to kick them out. This is useful for people who are hacking or trash-talking too much. So, get to winning! Name of the Game ---------------- The goal is to kill as many other people as you can. The person with the most kills at the end of a match wins, so naturally you also want to die as little as possible. Note deaths do not usually count against your score, but they do if there is a tie for number of kills. To kill your enemies, walk around and find a weapon. They spin around slowly and don't move around. If it's moving and not an enemy, it's probably a weapon. Enemies look just like you do, but might have a different color circle surrounding them. The color of your circle was chosen when you created your account. You will get 1 point every time you kill another stick figure. Controls -------- These are taken directly from the instructions. There is more than one way to do everything except look around, which is just with the mouse. Move: Arrow Keys, WASD Attack: Click (Left Mouse Button), Space Bar, Numpad 0 Leaderboard: Shift, B, 1 Chat: Enter, T Walk: V, \ (Backslash) Post-Game --------- After a game is over, you'll see the final scores for a few seconds. It might show that you've gone up a rank. After the scores, you'll see an ad for 20 seconds, and then the next game will start. ======== D. Ranks [ranks] ======== You can go up ranks in this game. It does nothing to aide your gameplay, but is an easy way to show to other players how good (or not) you are in comparison. Rank is calculated at the end of a match, so quitting a match partway through won't help you, no matter how well you did. Rank is calculated only on kills, so it doesn't matter what place you got or how many deaths you have. The following is the breakdown of how many kills you need to go up to another rank. Rank 01: 5 kills Rank 02: 25 kills Rank 03: 100 kills Rank 04: 300 kills Rank 05: 750 kills Rank 06: 2000 kills Rank 07: 5000 kills Rank 08: 10000 kills Rank 09: 20000 kills Rank 10: 40000 kills Rank 11: 60000 kills Rank 12: 80000 kills Rank 13: 100000 kills Rank 14: 125000 kills Rank 15: 150000 kills ######################################################################### ### ### ### III. STRATEGIES [strat] ### ### ### ######################################################################### ===================== A. General Strategies [stgen] ===================== Evading Shots ------------- When trying to evade shots (which is often), don't walk in a predictable way. Wiggle around, but don't just go up, down, up, down, etc. Go up, down, up, up, down, and do it as randomly as you can. That makes it harder for people to hit you. Know Your Walls --------------- It's good to know which wall you're behind, also. There are two kinds: the kind you can't shoot through, and the kind you just can't move through. Sometimes it's more obvious than others. Make sure, if you're hiding behind a wall, that you can't just shoot right through it. Or if you want to shoot someone else, that they're not behind one. ==================== B. Weapon Strategies [stwep] ==================== Weapons List ------------ * Fists - You always start out with the fists, and have to pick up a weapon in order to do basically anything. There are no situations in which they are better than a weapon. * Pros: Fast walking * Cons: Everything else * Sword - The sword, AKA Katana, allows you to run faster than all other weapons, but you can only hit people with weak blows from a close range. This weapon is best to pick up when you're in a small level or have a lot of health. It does well in small areas, but not as well in big, open spaces. * Pros: Fastest running Fast attacks Small rooms Against slow walkers * Cons: Weak attacks Short-range Big rooms Against other close-ranges * Bat - The baseball bat makes you walk slowly and has a pretty long attack time, but to compensate, it has a powerful punch. Like all close-range weapons, it does well in small rooms but badly in open spaces. To be honest, I think this is the worst weapon in the game, but not by a lot. Even so, it's a matter of opinion, so try it for yourself. * Pros: Powerful Small rooms Against slower walkers * Cons: Slow walking Short-range Big rooms Against faster walkers * Hammer - The hammer is the most powerful weapon in the game; it gives a one- hit kill every time it hits. The disadvantage is that you walk slowly and has a short range. My favorite strategy when using this weapon is to catch people coming around corners. This weapon is also best when dealing with other close-range weapons, because they have to get close to you to hurt you, and they need to be for you to kill them. * Pros: One-hit kill Small rooms Against close-range weapons * Cons: Slow walking Short-range Big rooms * AK-47 - The AK-47 packs a powerful punch and is tied with the Glock for longest range, but you crawl along if you're holding it. It's one of the better for all situations, but does badly against close-range weapons. * Pros: Power above average Long range Generally useful * Cons: Slow walking Against close-range * Glock - The Glock is slightly less powerful than the AK-48, but lets you walk much faster. It's wise to pick it up when you have a large amount of health and in large areas. Though it doesn't have any huge cons, it doesn't have any huge pros either, and as a result, it's the most well-rounded. * Pros: Average power Long range Well-rounded * Cons: Small rooms Against close-range * Shotgun - The shotgun is the most powerful gun in the game (but not the most powerful weapon). To compensate, it makes you walk much more slowly and has slow shots. It's best used stealthily. If you're fighting someone else with no cover, you might lose with the shotgun. But it does well if you shoot, and then hide behind a wall. * Pros: Powerful Normal range Stealthy * Cons: Slow shots Slow walking Open spaces Weapon Chart ------------ The following is a detailed chart about each weapon. This chart was basically taken from the Stick Arena FAQ on the XGenStudios Forums (see Credit & Legal Info), but I added the final column. * Name should be obvious. * Kill is the amount of hits/shots it takes to kill an enemy with 100% health. * Hit Area is, essentially, the range. A "stick" is a player. * Attack Time is how long one attack takes before you can attack again. * Run Speed is measured in seconds...this chart was taken and I'm not sure what it means. But you can see which ones are fast and slow. * Kill Time is the Kill column multiplied by the Attack Time. This is how fast it takes to kill someone. Not that it's not factored in that you could kill somebody and have to wait a few seconds before you could attack, but you'd still have killed them. Name Kill Hit Area Attack Time Run Speed Kill Time .-------------.----------.-------------.-------------.------------.-----------. | Sword | 8 hits | 1 stick | 0.44 sec | 09.89 sec | 3.52 sec | | Shotgun | 3 shots | 5 sticks | 1.33 sec | 13.97 sec | 3.99 sec | | Hammer | 1 hit | <1 stick | 2.16 sec | 14.30 sec | 2.16 sec* | | AK-47 | 6 shots | 9 sticks | 0.53 sec | 14.30 sec | 3.18 sec | | Bat | 4 hits | 0.5 sticks | 0.54 sec | 11.15 sec | 2.16 sec | | Glock | 5 shots | 9 sticks | 0.64 sec | 12.11 sec | 3.20 sec | | Fists | 12 hits | 2 sticks | 0.60 sec | 10.00 sec | 7.20 sec | '-------------'----------'-------------'-------------'------------'-----------' (* If you hit with it the first time, it's an instant kill.) Power/Health ------------ It's very difficult to stay alive the whole game in Stick Arena, because it's impossible to get any lost health back, and the aiming is pretty easy. That's why I find it wise to choose a more powerful weapon the closer you are to death. It's a bit hard to explain, but I think it's intuitive. If you have more health, you should go for weapons that are weaker per attack (see chart in section B). If you have full health, you should go for the Sword, because you'll have the time to get all the hits in before you die. But if you have almost no health, go for the Hammer, because you want to do as much damage as possible, and you'll probably only attack once. This is usually true, but there are cases where one weapon is better than the other for the situation, regardless of health. This is a list of weapons I recommend you pick up, based just upon health. At the top is the weapon you should have at (almost) full health, and the bottom is when you're just about to die. * Sword * AK-47 * Glock * Bat * Shotgun * Hammer ######################################################################### ### ### ### IV.
