FAMILIAR FAQ An FAQ on the Various Familars of Kingdom of Loathing, their equipment and their Functions Copyright 2005, Marshall Tunstall. Version 4 You can contact me on GameFAQs on any board I visit, most reliably the Kingdom of Loathing board, as AstroFlameX. You can private message me on Kingdom of Loathing as Astro Seraia, or talk to me in Valhalla when I'm online. You can email me at AstroFlameX@gmail.com. You can instant message me on AIM at AstroFlameX, on Y! at AstroFlameX, or on MSN at AstroFlameX@gmail.com. If, for some ungodly reason, you can't get me at ANY of the above places, I occasionally play StarCraft under AstroFlameX on the East Coast, and Star Wars: Battlefront 2 (PS2) under AstroFlameX. You have no excuse not to be able to get ahold of me, really. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SECTION ONE - Table of Contents ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I. Table of Contents II. Update History III. Introduction IV. Familiar Listings V. Other Familiar Items VI. The Cake Shaped Arena VII. Legal Crap VIII. Thanks ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SECTION TWO - Update History ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Version 1 - Wrote up the guide in a night. Everything complete except for a few of the Familiars of the Month and zodiac sign exclusive ones that I don't have, and the Cake Arena Guide. Version 2 - Added the rest of the familiar information, took off the Spooky Gravy Fairy, which I learned hasn't been released yet, and wrote up the Cake Arena Guide. Guide is complete. Version 3 - I forgot to acknowledge someone in my Thanks. I'm sure that merits an entire update. Version 4 - Updated the familiar section, as must be regularly done to keep up with an online game. I suppose. Also added the line, "No longer available outside of the mall" to the end of the location of all the Familiars of the Day, Month and Year. Just to make it clear. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SECTION THREE - INTRODUCTION ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There's a very good chance that you won't read this section. I'll admit that I never read them. But whatever. Do what you want. The purpose of this FAQ is so that anyone who needs to learn something about any familiar in the game Kingdom of Loathing can have something to quickly consult. I'll try my best to list every possible thing about every familiar in the game, and their familiar items as well. So yeah. I'll start doing that. And remember, people like me and the other FAQ writers don't just magically pop these FAQs out of our asses. They take time and effort to create, so if this FAQ or any other one by me or another author helped you out, consider giving that author a donation for their hard work and time. I myself am trying to get a Hand Turkey Outline, and it isn't easy. Thank you. Oh, and you need a Famliar-Gro Terrarium to use these. Buy one from the Demon Market, just like the Council told you to do. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SECTION FOUR - Familiar Listings ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Angry Goat Cake Arena Item - Prosthetic Forehead. This is sometimes preferred, as if you are unlucky, it could take a while to get a tooth. Once you have a seal tooth, a worthless item and a hermit permit, visit the Hermitage in the Big Mountains, and trade the worthless item for a volleyball. Note that the Spectral Pickle Factory only appears on the Nearby Plains VERY rarely, and none may know the hour of its coming or going. Well, the hour of its going is always the next day. Anyways, gather these, and get ready to cook. Cook the brine and vinegar together to get briny vinegar, cook the briny vinegar with dill to make ghostly pickling solution. Use the maple leaf to get the Whirling Maple Leaf familiar. Function in battle - Attacks enemy, restores MP. Competition weakness - Hide and Seek. Alternate use - None. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SECTION FIVE - Other Familiar Items ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In addition to the familiar exclusive familiar items that can be won at the Cake-Shaped Arena, there are many (yes, four is many) that are non familiar specific. And here they are. LEAD NECKLACE This is the worst familiar item in the game. It gives +3 to familiar weight, and is basically the bad alternative to receiving the familiar specific item from the Cake Shaped Arena. You really don't want this. I mean, it's better than nothing, but it's not very much harder at all to just get the familiar specific item. ANNOYING PITCHFORK This familiar iten doesn't affect your familiar or it's weight, but raises all enemies' monster levels by 5. This is useful if you have nothing else, but there are more efficient ways to raise monster level. LUCKY TAM O'SHANTER This was the Familiar (Item) of the Month for March, 2005. When equipped on any familiar, it gives that familiar ten pounds of Leprechaun. So if you equipped this on a level 20 Leprechaun, ceteris paribus, you would have a level 30 Leprechaun. If you equipped it on a level 18 Saber-Toothed Lime, ceteris paribus, you would have the equivalent of having both a level 18 Saber-Toothed Lime and a level 10 Leprechaun. Note that all of the other Familiar Items of the Month work the same way. MINIATURE GRAVY-COVERED MAYPOLE This was the Familiar (Item) of the Month for May, 2005. When equipped on any familiar, it gives that familiar ten pounds of Baby Gravy Fairy. WAX LIPS This is the Familiar (Item) of the Month for July, 2005. When equipped on any familiar, it gives that familiar ten pound of Blood-Faced Volleyball. TINY PLASTIC CRAP It is also worth noting that all of the common Tiny Plastic Familiars add one pound of weight to your familiar. Technically these aren't familiar items, but accessories, but I don't want to make a whole new section for this paragraph. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SECTION SIX - The Cake-Shaped Arena ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Cake Arena is located in the Nearby Plains. By adventuring there, you use one adventure and 500 meat to train your familiar, but don't get any stat gains or meat drops. Why would you want to do this? Because the Cake-Shaped Arena is the fastest place to power up your familiars, and if you know what you're doing, you can raise them up to five times as fast. When you're choosing which opponent to go up against, you want to pick one whose level is barely lower than yours, by three or four levels at the most. For some reason, if you are both the same level, you will lose far more than you will win. The reason you want to be barely above their's is because if you are lower than theirs, you will get no reward, and if you're far higher, you will only get two or three experience instead of five. To get your level barely above theirs, you can do one of three things. If you're lucky and the familiar you want to raise is already barely above one of the Arena's, simply compete against it in an event neither of you are bad at. If your familiar is below all of the others, then you should raise the level of yours higher until it's barely more than one of the Arena's. This can be done with skills or items. The skills are Leash of Linguini, a Pastamancer skill, and Amphibian Sympathy and Empathy of the Newt, which are both Turtle Tamer skills. The items being the Plexiglass Pith Helmet, which is the reward for Hardcore Oxygenarian as a Turtle Tamer, the Cake Arena Item, and any three common Tiny Plastic Accessories. So, for example, you could have: 20 pound familiar + Leash of Linguini (5) + Amphibian Sympathy (5) + Empathy of the Newt (5) + Plexiglass Pith Helmet (5) + Cake Arena Item (5) + Tiny Plastic (1) + Tiny Plastic (1) + Tiny Plastic (1) = 48 pound familiar. That's a hell of a stat gain increase Your other option is to lower their level. The only way to do this is to compete in an event that your opponent is weak in. Be careful when doing this, though. Remember that it will lower your opponent's power more than you think. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SECTION SEVEN - Legal Crap ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Don't steal my FAQ. I worked hard on this. Do whatever you want to it. Read it, print it, use it, marry it, sacrifice it to your pagan gods, just make sure that my name is on it. If you claim this as your own, you will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law and such, and I will get some extra, needed money. All characters, holidays, and anything having to do with Kingdom of Loathing are the property of Asymmetric Productions. This FAQ may only be found on GameFAQs. If you're reading this anywhere else, tell me, and I will reward you with your own, personal, poorly-made-Sony- product elemental. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SECTION EIGHT - Thanks ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'd like to thank a few people who made this FAQ possible: CJayC - For creating the greatest gaming site on the net, GameFAQs. For what it's worth, I don't think you're a sell out. Jick and Mr. Skullhead - For creating Kingdom of Loathing, the best online game... online. Me, AstroFlameX - For being awesome enough to sit up and write this when I could be doing all KINDS of more constructive things. Uriel3ca3 - For filling me in on just about every familiar I didn't have. Those being the Mr. Store ones I don't have and the zodiac sign exclusives. Ganondwarf - For reminding me about the existence of the annoying pitchfork, which I technically already knew about. Batman - For being the most awesome thing in existence, inspiring me to live everyday trying to be half as awesome as he is Jesus - For dying for me and forgiving me for my sins, and yours too.
