I hope you find it interesting, enjoyable to read and most of all, useful! Jungle War is a very new game based on the forthcoming release of Vietcong on the PC. JW has become a larger success than the staff originally thought and now boasts a fan base of thousands. I have been playing JW since the beginning and have climbed in rank and knowledge of the game since. I want to try and cover JW in as much detail as possible, for every update to come. If your new to JW this guide should be a great tool to get you started, even if your confident at the game you might still find this guide helpful. Firstly, thank you Jesus Christ for dying for me. You are alive in my life today! I want to dedicate this guide to my girlfriend Jo whom I love dearly, thank you for all your support and putting up with me! Thank you to Rob who has helped me many, many times test my whacky ideas for games. Also thank you Wingee for creating Jungle War and you who is reading this. If you see a player named 'reij', then that's me. Feel free to contact me on any of the following (as long as you don't flood, spam, flame, etc..): Email: boxtm@ntlworld.com MSN: r6inhardt@hotmail.com ICQ: 167950576 These people deserve a shout: Cavalryman, Komandowitz, madd-dawgg. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.1 Read First ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This FAQ is (c) Copyright 2003 David Ridpath. All rights reserved GBT Ltd. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.2 Newcomers ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So you've just visited www.junglewar.com, you've downloaded the newest version of the game, signed up for an account and logged into the lobby. "What do I do now?" you might be asking. Well, first of all you might want to sort out your account details and give yourself a password to your suiting. So click on 'Your Account' on the lobby control panel. Done all that? Great! Time to join a game and get stuck in. Select a game from the list and click 'Join selected game'. Now your in the game lobby. Your name will be black in the room list, so choose a side (either US or VC) and then wait till the host (the top person of the list) presses 'next'. The next screen is the equipment setup. Choose two items (or one heavy gun) and then press the 'Ready' button. Once everyone has readied the game will begin. I'll leave the rest of the controls for you to find out for now, it's quite easy from here on in. Everything (apart from text/macros) is done using the mouse. Tips: ----- Always use the Medkit where possible. Not only can you heal your teammates who are probably a higher rank than you and therefore can use the weapons to a better advantage, but you get a lot of points from healing teammates which is ideal in order to level up and upgrade. Listen to what the experienced players say! They don't always get it right, but they do most of the time and this will help keep the squad organized to maximize your potential to succeed. Never take the Heavy gun until you have 5 points in the shooting skill. This is very important because you don't want to waste you equipment space with something that you cannot fire effectively. Don't Air Strike your own team! Warn them if you are going to use it and keep it a good deal distance away from them and the base. =============================================================================== 2.0 SIDES =============================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.1 America ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Advantages: On most maps the US are the attacking team. This is great because you don't have to wait for the other team to complete any objectives if all of your squad is wiped out. You get the option of using the M60 Heavy Gun straight away at rank 1. The Disadvantages: At level 1 you have 1 tile less of active view range than a level 1 VC (Although by level 9 you have a full active view range). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.2 Vietcong ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Advantages: You have a full active view range from level 1. It can be helpful when you need to select the enemy medic behind the nader/heavy gunner. VC's objectives are to defend on most maps, which means you can take cover and let the enemy come to you! The Disadvantages: Waiting for the US in maps like Escape to reach the LZ. =============================================================================== 3.0 SKILLS =============================================================================== New characters start with each of their skills at level 1. As you acquire points by completing missions you will gain ranks. For each rank your character increases you will gain 2 skill points to distribute across your skills. The score required for each rank is as follows: Level Score 1 0 2 20,000 3 50,000 4 90,000 5 150,000 6 240,000 7 370,000 8 550,000 9 800,000 Shooting skill This applies to how well you fire guns. (M16, M60, AK47, Dektarev). The better your shooting skill is, the more damage you will do to enemies when using a gun.* This I would consider your most important skill because it represents your ability to deal damage in combat. Throwing skill This applies to the use of grenades. If your throwing skill is low, when you attempt to throw a grenade at an enemy, the grenade my fall wide, short or long of the target. Improve your grenade throwing skill and your grenades are more likely to hit the target. Remember if your throwing skill is poor, you may even damage yourself if your grenade lands too close to you!!* I consider this to be almost as important as the shooting skill. If your going to use grenades, Make sure you have at least three points in this skill. Strength When an enemy attacks you and your health falls to 0, your character becomes incapacitated. During this time a friendly player with a medikit can come and revive you before you die. Your strength determines how long you stay incapacitated before you die.* The only thing useful about this skill, is that when you get shot down, you stay frozen in the battle field (so to speak) until either a teammate heals you, or your incapacitated time expires. Not an essential skill unlike shooting. Stealth The jungle is full of trees and bushes. Your stealth skill is your ability to use this to your advantage when an enemy attacks you!* A worthwhile skill to invest in. The better your stealth skill, the less damage you will take when you are on a bush/cover tile. =============================================================================== 4.0 ARSENAL =============================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4.1 America ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Damage Points M16 Machine Gun ------ ------ -Standard issue US assault rifle -Nothing much to say but your bog standard rifle. -Unlimited ammo (Shot fired from the adjacent tile)** 12 200 M60 Heavy Gun -The most powerful gun in the game, but can only be carried into a mission without any other items.* -It's questionable whether that statement is true or not. But without yet enough research to prove, it is equally as powerful as the VC's Dektarev Heavy Gun. -Unlimited ammo (Shot fired from the adjacent tile)** 20 320 Grenades -You can carry 4 grenades to throw at your enemies. Improve your throwing skill to increase the accuracy of your grenades.* -Your best friend when four tightly packed VC soldiers approach. On average it only takes 4 grenades to knock out a single enemy soldier. (Grenade thrown from 5 tiles away)** 28 250 Engineer kit -In the kit you will find 3 C4 explosives. You can set this at your location with a 30 second fuse. You can use these to blow up some huts and bridges as well as damaging other players on the map. -You will also find tools to disarm traps. Stand next to the trap you wish to disarm and click on it to disarm it.* -This is a great piece of kit, although you probably won't use it as often as it's worth. Not only does it come with three sachets of C4 explosives, but you can also disarm the VC's Deadly Traps, bonus! (Explosion from the adjacent tile)** 90 635 Radio -Your bombers are on standby awaiting your coordinates for an air strike. If you are carrying a radio you can call in an air strike onto your location or any friendly players location in 30 seconds time. The explosion will damage players or blow up some huts or bridges within its blast radius.* -This is the US's unique special weapon. This is there biggest tactical advantage, and i can't stress that enough (read section 2.1 for more). Remember; the target can be set by clicking any alive squad member and selecting 'Air Strike' (this includes you and the guy on your team running towards the enemy supply huts). (Bombs dropped on adjacent tiles)** 100 700 Medikit -Carrying a medikit allows you to heal yourself or other player on your team. You can also revive other players on your team who are incapacitated before they die.* -The only way to rejuvenate hit points in-game. This kit can heal you, or anyone of your teammates (one person at a time) when they are standing one tile adjacent to you. 10 200 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4.2 Vietcong ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Damage Points AK47 Machine Gun ------ ------ -Standard issue VC assault rifle -Same as the US M16 Machine Gun. Nuff said. -Unlimited ammo (Shot fired from the adjacent tile)** 10 170 Dektarev Heavy Gun -Heavy gun used by the Vietcong. You must be at least level 6 before you can use the Dektarev. Unlimited ammo* -Same as the US M60 Heavy Gun. The only weapon in the game that has a level requirement you need to be rank 6 before you can use this. (Shot fired from the adjacent tile)** 15 265 Grenades -You can carry 4 grenades to throw at your enemies. Improve your throwing skill to increase the accuracy of your grenades.* -These babies are great for their splash damage on adjacent tiles, causing lovely damage to a compact enemy formation. (Grenade thrown from 5 tiles away)** 28 250 Explosives -You can choose to carry 3 explosives. You can set this at your location with a 30 second fuse. You can use these to blow up some huts and bridges as well as damaging other players on the map.* -Why can't the VC have an anti-air and explosives kits to balance out the US's Engineer Kit that contains a solution to Deadly Traps? Well, for now the VC just have this kit for explosives work. (Explosion from the adjacent tile)** 90 635 Medikit -Carrying a medikit allows you to heal yourself or other player on your team. You can also revive other players on your team who are incapacitated before they die.* -Hp in a bag. Same as US. Very useful! 10 200 Traps -You can choose to carry supplies to set up to 10 traps on the map. Once you set them at a location if a character moves to that location the trap will trigger and damage the player. Other VC players will be able to see your traps across the map. US players can only see traps if they are standing next to them.* -Unique special weapon for the VC. Much better than the non-deadly traps used in the previous versions of JW. Great for trapping LZ's and potential US bridge crossing points.** 100 1000 **Data is an average figure collected through numerous tests using a player with 5 in each stat. =============================================================================== 5.0 MAPS =============================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.1 Mission: Escape ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A US helicopter transport has had to make an emergency landing in the middle of the jungle. The passengers now have to travel through enemy territory following a small river to a safe landing zone for helicopter evacuation.* I love this map so much! It's quick, small and simple. Objectives: US: Get at least half your squad to the LZ Kill all VC VC: Stop the US troops from escaping Kill all US troops Tactics: US ----------- Remember your attacking here. Choose which way your going to attack from; north, middle or east. Then stay close together and make sure you have the heavy gunners/naders in front and the medic's right behind them. Pull back if you start to become over run with VC and heal up. Try using C4 or Air Strikes to surprise them when you pull back. Tactics: VC ----------- I like to check that someone has trapped the north bridge, then move slightly south to where the middle bridge is. There take cover under the bushes for extra protection but make sure that one person regularly checks the far east for any sneaky yanks! Remember that this is a defensive mission for the VC, Don't go running away too far without good reason. Beware of the Air Strike trick on the middle bridge (or sometimes elsewhere), it can be a very costly mistake. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.2 Mission: One Bridge Too Many ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The San Pang river bridge is the VC's main supply line for this area, a small squad of US soldiers must enter the area and destroy the bridge and travel West along the road for extraction.* Objectives: US: Destroy the bridge within 15 minutes Get to the extraction point after blowing bridge VC: Stop the US squad from destroying the bridge within 15 minutes Stop the US squad from escaping ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.3 Mission: Sabotage ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A small team of VC must destroy 3 US supply huts and return to their dug out.* Objectives: US: Protect the supply huts Kill all VC VC: Destroy all supply huts At least half the squad must return ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.4 Mission: Frontline ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Your squad has been commanded to occupy a small but important area of land unfortunately it looks like the enemy has got there first! You must take out the enemy camp whilst protecting yours from attack.* This is about as fair as maps get. A simple 2 Fort map, nuff said. Objectives: US: Destroy or take over the enemy base Protect our base VC: Destroy or take over the enemy base Protect our base Tactics: US and VC ------------------ Always have at least one person defend the base in any situation. There are three paths that lead to the other base. Splitting your team up here isn't a bad idea, just make sure you can handle a full assault by the enemy from one path incase it happens. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.5 Mission: Behind Enemy Lines ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A VIP helicopter has been shot down behind enemy lines. Intel suggests that the VC have recovered important documents and taken them to a nearby village. A crack squad of US troops has been sent in to look for survivors, destroy the documents and kill any VC that have come into contact with the documents.* Not one of my favorite maps - yet, but i haven't played it enough times so far. The documents are randomly placed in a hut each time. All VC can see which hut has the docs by looking for a red square with a white middle. A US soldier will get a speech message and see the same docs box when they enter the right hut. Objectives: US: Find the documents Kill all VC VC: Prevent the US troops from destroying the documents Kill all US troops =============================================================================== 6.0 TIPS =============================================================================== I'm retreating, follow me! -------------------------- Equipment: Air Strike/C4 I think everyone has been a victim to this at least once in their newbie days. What am I talking about? The AS/C4 trick of course! Basically, it's great when you have a large tightly grouped bunch of enemies chasing you. Just call in the AS (or set the C4 depending on which) at your location just as the enemy is outside your range and when they reach the target area, hopefully the bomber (or detonation) will arrive to wipe them out. A good equipment combo for leveling ----------------------------------- Equipment: Medikit + 4 Grenades I have been doing this for ages now, and it's been earning me a minimum of 6k points each game, and even when the side i'm on gets a slaughtering from the other team. Tactic: Stay close to a teammate that looks like he knows what he's doing (a high level player is also a good idea), but stay directly behind him. Now when he spots the enemy and starts to fire at him, constantly heal him. Now hopefully he has attracted more enemies to fire back at him (and maybe you) which will force them to cluster up close together. Now throw your grenades at those compact enemies (concentrate on just one; preferably the near the back who's doing all the healing). Rambo: Lone Soldier Style ------------------------- Equipment: Medikit This one's quite easy and is really effective in a 1 on 1 situation. If you find yourself in a situation where you are losing the fight. You don't have to run away or face death with this trick. Stand still and keep healing yourself. Meanwhile type in the chat to whoever is nearby that you need their support immediately! This will stop your attacker from taking you down before they get there (of course as long as your attacker is using the standard rifle). I haven't confirmed this yet, but on a few tests i was able to slowly heal back to full health with this trick (Your enemies shooting skill will have to be taken into consideration here though). =============================================================================== 7.0 MISCELLANEOUS =============================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7.1 Macros ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hold the first key down (Control) and one of the following keys to shout a command out loud.
