INTRODUCTION Boxyboy is an offshoot of the canonical box-pushing game Soukoban, with a lot of levels rehashed, nicer graphics, and handy controls. In each of Boxyboy's 250 levels you must push boxes so they land on dotted squares. Once each box has a dotted square, you are done. This sounds simple, but you can only push boxes in 4 directions, you can't jump over them, and they get in the way, or they get stuck, a lot. Even avoiding dead ends isn't enough. If you immobilize a box, there is no way to win a level. Often you need to make in- between moves to fit that one more box in. Boxyboy for the TG16 appears to be a superset of games like Boxxle and Shove It! and in later versions of this FAQ I may provide which level maps to which. The superior memory and graphics of the TG16 allow you to see more and do more--the takeback is especially nice, because you don't have to risk mistakes. I am pretty sure that there are no extra levels in Boxxle/Shove It/etc. but I cannot make assurance. So for now you just have these 250 levels. 1-1. THE GAME As the levels get bigger, walking around is a bit more tedious and it is nice that Boxyboy has a take-back feature that goes back many moves. Often you'll find you just misplaced one box, or the first 10 boxes you put on dots block out #11. Then you have to work backwards to see what to do. However, not all later challenging levels are huge. Some are very small and in tight quarters, and in fact the large levels generally get easier as they go on and you make more room. Boxyboy has a good variety of puzzles and, although you will recognize motifs, few levels are clear copies of another. Some of the especially tricky ones include boxes at the center of a diamond checkerboard of boxes, or ones where you seem to be just one space short of being able to maneuver everything properly. 1-2. FAQ NOTATION As for reading this FAQ, I don't think "UDLR etc." is really a good succinct way to go when annotating solutions. It involves a lot of walking around that I will try to assume, so I will label the boxes and say which to move and let you figure how to walk. On the early levels it is not a big deal, but the later bigger ones have a lot of repetitive twisting around. Plus by that time you'll probably be good enough to be reading the shorthand. When long actions are repeated I will try to go in for description instead of labeling moves. 6L = go 6 left 5R = 5 right 4D = 4 down 3U = 3 up. Parentheses usually means to make a brief side move. L* = all the way left L*-1=all the way left, minus one (follows) = sometimes I get annoyed rewriting things so I just put this in. It also helps you not have to reread everything too. Once the board gets too big I'll say "follows" and if I have a block in parentheses it means, not that numbered block, but the block at that position--or at that position and in that direction. So (6) is where 6 was on the original map, (6-1R) is 1R of where 6 was. I think this is easier to follow than wondering if I wrote anything different. And if there are too many boxes on targets I may revert to coordinate mapping. Readability note: on some levels there will be a bottleneck beyond which all boxes need to pass to win. Often I will divide the level into how to get the boxes to the bottleneck and how to sort them after the bottleneck. I think it's necessary, even reading a walkthrough, to have an idea what's happening in case you mess up. 1-3. FLUFF I've always enjoyed puzzle games but it appears Boxyboy isolates many of the reasons without dulling them down to much. A few years ago someone suggested I FAQ Boxxle but quite frankly I found it too boring. It's amazing what a little bit of graphics can do--it takes a special game to be interesting when you move a dot around. Atari Adventure got away with it, being only 4K and the first of its kind. And I'm more of a luddite than most but some versions of this can be very dull. And despite the lack of need for immediate action, Boxyboy takes over the major things that make puzzle games so good. To wit: 1. it features levels you are sure are impossible at first glance, but then you break them down 2. it features some levels that look very similar but aren't 3. it allows you to seem to get close but just have that one little thing to do more--which isn't a little thing 4. it has a combination of small and big levels where the difficulty doesn't always correlate to size 5. you have a bunch of in between moves that are not at all obvious, but they make the solution look that way 6. there's a good deal of backwards reasoning that's more than just X's and O's. For a tough square you have to say "how do I get there" and then plan it out, and you'll make mistakes. 7. many levels probably require you to half-solve them a few times before you fully understand them. 8. even if you, the reader, plow through this FAQ, you'll probably still be amazed at the ingenuity of the puzzle creators. Which is even more important than being amazed at my ingenuity. You can if you want, but just remember I was amazed by the puzzle creators, who are probably more properly amazed at the giants/pioneers of computer science than I am, who are probably more amazed at nature/logic in general than the creators are at them, and so forth. Given the difficulty of many of the later levels I came to realize that I was executing a plan much like I would for writing an algorithm or designing a generalized script--try a bunch of stuff, see what works, and make it more efficient. It's the sort of thing I can't do all the time but when the reasoning is isolated, it lights the way for all that horrendous stuff I never quite understood in computer science classes. It's already paid off. And my parents and teacher said I shouldn't be distracted by games because that's not where it's really at. Strictly it's true but if you're distracted by something like this, good for you. 1-4. TG16 SPECIFIC NOTES Also, here are the countries for each level you play. The game cuts off halfway through China once you solve the last level. You get a small screen and your guy walking up to the flag of the next country once you solve a batch of 20. America = levels 1-20, 101-120, 201-220 Egypt = levels 21-40, 121-140, 221-240 China = levels 41-60, 141-160, 241-250 Southpole(sic) = levels 61-80, 161-180 Japan = levels 81-100, 181-200 You get a "you win" screen after solving levels 100, 200, and 250. These give you a password for the next level, which you can play at the startup screen. Super tough levels include 96, 100, 201, 212, 233, 249, 250. I may add more as I flip through. 2. CONTROLS Vertical overrides horizontal if you push in both directions. Button 1: speeds up walk when you are not pushing anything. When you are running, you cannot push anything. Button 2: takes a move back. Combining buttons 1 and 2 makes things go extra fast, as long as your previous move wasn't a box push. RUN: brings up the menu. MAP shows the whole board, RETRY resets it, GIVEUP goes to the level chooser, SOUND toggles sound. In the level chooser, button 1 goes up 10 levels, button 2 goes down 10 levels, and the arrows go forward/back 1 up to the maximum you've solved or level 20, whichever is higher. Select [space] brings up arrows you can use to browse the screen. Password choosing is a breeze. You can hold down the button to scroll left and right through the words, and because you can scroll left from A to Z, you only need to move about 6.5 letters between letters. Construction is fairly straightforward. [SELECT] flips through the 5 motifs for letters, and pushing [START] brings up a menu: PLAY ALL(clear all) EXIT LOAD SAVE, which should be fairly straightforward. Navigate with button 1 and the up/down arrows. For placing a piece, push button 1 and you can hold it while moving around to create more of the same. Push button 2 and hold it and move the arrows to select a different piece. There's very little error checking here, and you can save something partial if you want. There are 3 slots to save a game. 3. STRATEGIES There's a lot of received knowledge on Sokoban, but I think there are several basic pieces of information to note. 1. if 1 block can't get to any target, you need to restart 2. if 1 block is against a wall, then it cannot make it to a target off the wall XXXXXXX X .X X $ X XXXXXXX 3. 2 blocks can weld to each other if both are against a wall too. This holds similarly for 3 blocks/1 wall and 4 blocks. XX $$ < no moves 4. if a level is crowded to start, rule out impossible moves, or ones that clearly make blocks as in 2-3 above, and make the only one left. 5. Try to locate places where you can shunt a box off and move it back later. Often having just one more box out of the way gives enough space to complete the rest. 6. If there is a group of dots to land boxes on, try to plan out what to put where. Process of elimination works at the end, too. Example: X X.X ..X ..X < placing a block here blocks out 2U. .X 7. On later levels the easiest move is seldom the best one, although it can help you grasp a level. Fill in what you can, note what's tough, and try to see if you can take care of that next time. 8. Note some passages are 1-way and make sure you can cycle through them and don't have to cycle back. Similarly, try and create at least a 1-way passage to make it through if possible. See if you can come back around. 9. It's best to divide levels into 2 parts: 1. cleaning up the mess at the beginning 2. fitting everything together at the end. 10. Often you'll need just one more block to fit everything in. An example below: XXX XXX X X X X X.....X X XXXX XX X X XXXXXXXXX Here you will want to place something in the bottom niche, then the right, left, 2nd-left and center, then push up from the niche. Having this in- betweener can make all the difference. Sometime you may need to drop 2 blocks into such an area. 11. Many later levels also force you to do tricky things with boxes in crowded places. For instance, below, you can push UL down, UR left, and DR up to release. You should also be familiar with "almost-losing" positions. X$$ $X X $$ $$ $$ can be broken up, $ $ can't. XXX 12. It's OK to fail, though it may take time. I know several times I deliberately put one box in a corner and tried to solve the rest, just to see how it would go. In general breaking the game up into how to position boxes at the end and how to unshuffle them at the beginning works well. 13. If you are on a big board and can't do much on the left side, go back to the right side and maybe something you did on the right of the left side will work on the right side. 14. Try new things with abandon. You have takebacks and, of course, the save states. Also, one of the most frustrating things in Boxyboy is doing the same thing over and over again. If you find yourself doing this, stop and see if one move you assumed was right was, in fact, wrong. This is TG16 or emulator specific but I also recommend taking screenshots of something, or making a save state, when you know you did something right. For the tougher levels you probably won't solve them in one sitting, and even having a goal to look forward to will help you get going. Oh and there is nothing wrong with printing a file or marking up a screenshot to see where you can't move. 4. later=tougher, so version = (solved %) squared.

goal at the moment, but I cherry picked the relatively easy ones. Maybe 
Benford's Law would be more accurate to calculate the version #(sum of time ~ 
n log n) or am I just showing off heinously?
0.6.4: sent to GameFAQs 4/27/2007. 200 of 250 levels done. Won't keep this 
pace up.
0.8.2: sent to GameFAQs 5/1/2007. 227 of 250 levels done. Technically, a 
slowdown, but I am pleased with the pace here. 1 a day gets the FAQ written 
in a month.
0.9.0: sent to GameFAQs 5/2/2007. 238 of 250 levels done. Seems like `huge 
progress, but I pegged all the relatively easy levels. The rest will be very 
tough but I'm still ahead of pace.

Thanks to http://codecola.net/sps/sps.htm for having a Sokoban Solver which I 
used for the left side of level 249 because I was cranky and tired and just 
wanted to get SOMETHING done on that level and I'd forgotten to re-try it. I 
re-solved the left part that way. It also verified that I could NOT solve 
certain parts of 100 and 201 on their own. Well, it also provided some 
general entertaining insights though it did conk out of memory when I tried 
one of the bigger levels here(yes, I yielded to temptation on the later 
levels.)

Thanks to the usual GameFAQs gang, current and emeritus. They know who they 
are, and you should, too, because they get/got some SERIOUS writing done. 
Good people too--bloomer, falsehead, Sashanan, Masters, Retro, Snow Dragon, 
ZoopSoul, War Doc, Brian Sulpher, AdamL, odino, JDog and others I forgot. OK, 
even Hydrophant in his current not-yet-banned message board incarnation. I am 
not part of his gang, but I want him to be part of mine. Oh and the TG16 gang 
that didn't like me in the bad old days of the review board. Miss you guys, 
sort of.

wisdomofadragon for his partial Boxxle FAQ and SShannon for his Shove-It FAQ. 
Without that I would probably not have said "This is nice, but we might need 
a COMPLETE FAQ, and their guides are a couple years old now." 
wisdomofadragon's is more lyrical than my effort will ever be. Plus he 
thanked me, even though I don't remember him. Good sir, I doff my thinking

Thanks to AXE, the best hex editor ever, for enabling me to cheat and text-
map levels and also find the passwords to each level easily.
Thanks to the creators of the MagicEngine emulator. Even with takeback 
ability, I still needed places to branch off from to cutdown on the time 
taken. The save states did the trick.
No thanks to Microsoft for the nannyware that is Windows Vista and it 
preferring stupid Visual C 8, which made minor problems as I generated my 
text maps.

Pip and Simba, my cats, for not blocking the keyboard or knocking the mouse 
on the floor TOO much when they needed to roll over, and also for reminding 
me I needed a break from some of the frustration of this game--though they 
had ulterior motives. And for sitting by my chair past midnight a lot too.

My coworkers, for not noticing(or pretending not to notice) how long I was
