Rapidly changing direction (left, right, left, right) will quicken how fast the boost comes. Release the button once the blue or orange sparks come out of the wheel. Orange sparks will produce a larger boost. Some bikes, like the Sport Bike, feature "inside drifting" which allows extremely sharp turns. FOLLOWING: Following a racer for more than 3 seconds will allow you to gain a rather useful speed boost. It is however rather difficult to pull off, especially if the person in front is a human player. BOOSTING: At the beginning of a race, as the number "2" drops into position, hold the "Go" Button until the race starts to give yourself a boost. It is a classic Mario Kart trick that you absolutely need to know. But if you do it too early, you will spin out, losing valuable seconds. SNAKING: A hated technique by many as it gives unfair advantage, almost impossible to efficiently use and master, but a select few still use it. Essentially, you drift left and right. On the left side of the track, you drift right. When you reach there, you begin to drift left. It requires a wide track and allows you to repeatedly gain mini-turbos from drifting. ITEMS: Things you use to affect you/other racers. Items like mushrooms give you boosts and shells and bananas hinder other racers. The best item of the lot is the Super Horn, powerful enough to obliterate the mighty blue shell. Not as rare as you think, I encounter it every 15-20 races, not the every 50 races I've seen others suggest. Your mileage may vary. ______ / _/ /____ __ _ ___ _/ // __/ -_) ' \(_-< /___/\__/\__/_/_/_/___/ Bananas ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Exist in single and triple forms. The single form allows you to block red and green shells once by dragging it behind you, while the triple form circles around you, blocking shells whenever it can. Defense gets signifciantly weaker when there is just one or two circling around you as there are gaps. Shells ¯¯¯¯¯¯ Green shells fire in a straight line. Red shells home in on the enemy in front. Both exist in triple variants. The Blue Shell fires straight for the first place player and explodes on impact. It knocks any player in its way to first place, so be sure to avoid it. Bob-Omb ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ You throw it forward and it will explode after a few seconds. It is possible to kill yourself, so be careful. Coin ¯¯¯¯ Gets you two coins. Mushroom ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Gives you a short speed boost and allows you to boost past grass/sand or any environmental thing that would normally slow you down. Exists in single, triple and a golden variety that allows you to have unlimited boosts for a short period of time. Star ¯¯¯¯ An item that lets you boost past grass/sand, knock other racers out of your way and gain a slight speed boost along the way. Piranha Plant ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Quite possibly my favorite item, it gives you a short speed boost every few seconds and automatically chomps on any racer in your way. Bullet Bill ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ An item that's rare to see here. Allows you to let the computer drive you forward at a high speed for a short period of time. Knocks any racer out of your way. SOMETHING TO ADD: It is interesting to note you can use the steering controls while in Bill form to move left and right to knock out players you would miss otherwise, as reader Rush_shirt pointed out. Thanks for the tip! Boomerang Flower ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Allows you to throw a Boomerang 3 times to hit players in your way. Fire Flower ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Allows you to fire fireballs to other players for a short period of time. Super Horn ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ The most destructive item of the lot, it's powerful enough to send a shockwave that destryoys anything within a five-meter radius: items, players and even the mighty Blue Shell. It is rather rare, but keep it when you get it to save for first place or when there's a crowd of other people around you. NOTE ON ITEM DISTRIBUTUION: Items are now decided on the distance between you and the player in front, no longer by place. Thus, it is possible to get a Bullet Bill in second and a single Mushroom in 10th. Much more fair this time. You can hold forward on the control stick to throw an item forward, hold it backward to fire something backwards or simply hold the item button to drag it along. __ ___ __ / |/ /__ ___/ /__ ___ / /|_/ / _ \/ _ / -_|_-< /_/ /_/\___/\_,_/\__/___/ Grand Prix ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ You race against 11 other people in 4 races in a determined order. All items are activated and you cannot choose specific courses, only cups of 4 preselected courses. There are 8 cups in total. Available in single and multi- player. Time Trials ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ You race against a ghost in controlled situations, no items are given except for 3 mushrooms and there are no item boxes. You can race alone, against a ghost of your best record, a staff ghost or an online ghost be it the world record for that course or your friends' ghosts. Only in single-player. VS Race ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ You can choose what items appear, how difficult the enemy is, how many players play and which courses you want to play in. Available in single and multi- player. Battle ¯¯¯¯¯¯ The disappointing Battle Mode in this game lets you use items to increase your score by hitting other people. You start with 3 and your score increases if you hit more people and reduce their balloons, if you get hit it goes down by 1. Coin/Shine Runners did not return, nor did specially designed battle courses, instead there are 8 courses from the standard game and you start at random points. They should have just picked some from the old games because even THAT would have been better, looking for your enemies is a pain in the ass. Avoid this mode if you can. Available in single and multi-player. ____ __ __ ___ __ / __ \/ /_/ / ___ ____ / _ | ___ ___ ___ ____/ /____ / /_/ / __/ _ \/ -_) __/ / __ |(_-
As you enter the temple, there will be a right followed by 2 lefts, then trick
off the ramp and grab an item box.

Afterwards is a glider ramp. On touchdown, pick either of the two paths (the
left one is shorter but you run the risk of falling) to reach the finish line.

DS WARIO STADIUM

STAFF GHOST: Nin*Mizuho 2.14.213

As the race begins, get an item box before turning left. Then follow the path's
right turn before making a sharp left turn, followed by a second left turn. At
the end, trick off the boost ramp, then turn left. Trick off all 4 of the boost
ramps, then get an item box before turning left again.

Trick off both of the boost ramps, avoiding the rotating fireballs as best you
can. At the end, turn left followed by a right turn. After that, turn left. Do
not take the corner too sharply or you might just collide with one of the
rotating fireballs. Trick off the ramp, then turn left.

Get an item box as you trick off the first of 3 boost ramps, then after landing
in the water, there are some more ramps just before a left turn. There's one
last glider ramp just before the finish line.

GCN SHERBET LAND
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
STAFF GHOST: Nin*Fausti 2.21.192

As the race begins, the path turns right, leading to a set of item boxes,
followed by a left turn. After that, you can choose to be in the water or above
ground. While underwater does have several boost pads, in my experience the
above ground path is slightly faster. If you do take the above ground section,
take a right turn shortly afterwards to enter the cave, while underwater-goers
should just follow the path. The paths converge just shortly afterwards.

In the cave, turn right followed by a left and a set of item boxes, then turn
right followed by a left. Outside, turn a right, followed by a second right and
another set of item boxes. Now the path splits into two - above ground and
underwater.

If you do take the above ground path, turn a right at the end, avoiding the
icicles and the holes that take you underwater. If you take the underwater path
you need to avoid the pillars, but there is also a right turn at the end.
Common sense should take you, whichever path you choose, to the finish line.

3DS MUSIC PARK
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
STAFF GHOST: Nin*Sho 2.24.468

NOTE: This course is called 3DS Melody Motorway in PAL releases of the game.

At the beginning, turn left and right, getting an item box along the way. You
can boost staight across the grass. There is now a left turn which is split
into 3 paths - inside (shortest), middle (you can trick off the piano keys) and
outside (farthest but it has boost pads).

As the paths converge, avoid the spots with the lights on as the Piranha Plants
can chomp on you and take precious seconds. There is a ramp which can be
reached by a boost item, or take the long way round. There is now a wide right
turn which is followed by a set of item boxes and a wide left turn.

Trick off both the ramp and the drum thingy, then turn right and chooose which
ever ramp you want - glider or normal. Anyway, the path is mostly straight,
though sticking to the sides may be a good idea.

Beside the second music note are two different sets of item boxes, so do grab
one before proceeding. You can trick off the ground just as the music notes
collide onto the ground to get some extra boosts.

After that is a right turn, though you can use the drum on the side to get some
extra speed boosts. At the end, there's one last left turn just before the
finish line.

N64 YOSHI VALLEY
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
STAFF GHOST: Nin*Mark 2.28.814

Since there are SO MANY different paths, I will list the two I find the best.

At the beginning, turn left and enter the valley area (getting an item box
along the way), then at the fork, you have the two different paths to choose
from:

PATH 1 - Take the left turn, then follow the bridge and trick off of it, then
turn right and get an item box. This is the fastest path but is very risky.

PATH 2 - Turn right, followed by another right to be blasted off by a cannon.
This path is much slower, but you do get an extra set of item boxes.

As the paths converge, follow it as it U-turns to the left then follow it.
Avoid the spinning egg (which is now smaller than before) and follow the
winding path. You can use mushrooms to dash across here too.

At the end, turn left to reach the finish line.

You can choose any of the multiple paths, though it's your choice between pure
speed or strategic advantages in terms of items.

DS TICK TOCK CLOCK
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
STAFF GHOST: Nin*Sophia 2.13.712

At the beginning, turn left and trick off the ramp, then get an item box. You
can trick off the clock hands in the center, though it is very narrow and risky
compared to the sides. As the paths converge, trick off the ramp, avoiding the
pendulum, just before turning right.

Trick off the next ramp, get an item box and avoid the pendulum before turning
right. Use whichever ramp you want, though the glider is preferred. Follow the
fastest way around the gears, which is to follow their way of turning.

At the end, there should be another set of item boxes just before turning right
then left. You can trick off the clock hands, then turn left. You can ride on
either gear just before the finish, though common sense should tell you to take
the one that's spinning forward. And you're done.

3DS PIRANHA PLANT SLIDE
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
STAFF GHOST: Nin*Polly 2.23.991

NOTE: This course is called 3DS Piranha Plant Pipeway in PAL releases.

At the beginning, trick off the ramp. Get an item box as quickly as you can,
but follow the path. Enter the pipe, then trick off the ramp just before
turning left. The path splits into 3, left, middle and right. The middle one is
risky as it is narrow and placed inconveniently, so avoid it.

Anyway, turn left and you can take the ramps to be above the track or below. At
the end, grab an item box before turning left, then right. There are several
ramps you can trick off here, so use them to your advantage.

Underwater, follow the path as it turns left. You can use the air currents to
go up to the higher platforms if you want. At the end, trick off the glider
ramp.

As you land, turn right, then left (you can cut across the turn using a boost
item). After that is the finish line.

Wii GRUMBLE VOLCANO
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
STAFF GHOST: Nin*Yuya 2.18.305

As you begin, trick off the ramp, then head straight and grab an item box.
Enter the mountain, then turn right and head straight. The path now splits into
two as there is another set of item boxes. The path now turns right, then left
just before converging.

Anyway, you can trick off the ramp, then use the glider ramp. Then at the end
turn right to reach the third set of item boxes. Turn the next right, then the
path splits into two. I advise taking the left path.

Turn left, then turn right. Trick off the glider ramp and you should see the
finish line.

N64 RAINBOW ROAD
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
STAFF GHOST: Nin*Leonel 1.33.731

Start by heading straight. Go through all the star rings, then trick off the
glider ramp and get an item box. Fly through both star rings, then follow the
path as it turns right. As the road becomes wavy, trick off the wavy sections
to get as many boosts as you can. Avoid the Chomp, then get the item box.

As the second section then turn right. You should reach the third set of item
boxes. There are now more Chomps at the next wavy section, so avoid them as
best you can. Now turn right, then follow the gentle left as it leads to the
next set of item boxes.

Alright, final section! Follow the winding path and grab an item box. After
that, turn left and grab the final set of item boxes, then race through all the
star rings and trick off the final glider ramp just before the finish line. And
you're DONE!

I would like to thank the following people/companies/websites:
- Nintendo, for producing amazing games.
- My family, for obvious reasons. Duh.
- Super Mario Wiki (mariowiki.com), for helping me when I was unsure of the
information I had (and for the entire "Karts and Parts" and "Character Stats"
  section)
- GameFAQs, for hosting the guide.
- Rush_shirt, a reader who helpfully pointed out a technique when using the
  Bullet Bill!

And so, this project comes to a close. Thank you all so much for reading and
goodbye!

CURRENT - The newest version.

Version 0.0.a ("Alpha") - 1/11/2014 - UNPUBLISHED: Started the guide and filled
out the basic stuff that are non-game related. Decided to use a simpler layout
and design than what I used in the 3D World guide, so not quite as pretty, but
in my opinion, much better-written.

Version 0.0.b ("Beta") - 5/15/2014 - UNPUBLISHED: Can't believe it's been 4
months! Touched up the guide's layout and added things here and there. You can
be sure this will be out the day the game launches, so keep a close eye!

Version 0.0.1 ("Kart") - 5/30/2014 - OBSOLETE: Launch day! Wrote the guide for
the first 2 tracks and also controls, but that's pretty much all I did. Will be
updating it over the next few days.

Version 0.1.0 ("Bike") - 6/10/2014 - OBSOLETE: Not a lot has been done, mostly
was writing the supplementary sections like karts and parts, items and others.

Version 0.5.0 ("ATV") - 6/17/2014 - OBSOLETE: Finished 4 of the cups.

Version 0.7.5 ("Circuit") - 6/20/2014 - OBSOLETE: Finished 2 more of the cups,
the Star and Special Cup. Added some Staff Ghost times to the courses. Look out
for the final 2 cups very soon!

Version 0.8.0 ("Crazy 8") - 6/20/2014 - OBSOLETE: Finished up the Karts and
Parts section with the stats for each vehicle and each part, along with adding
sections like "Points" and "Stamps" to Driving School. No new cups added.

Version 0.9.0 ("Super Horn")- 6/21/2014 - OBSOLETE: Finished up the Leaf Cup,
look out for the complete guide VERY soon!

Version 1.0.0 ("Mobius Strip") - 6/21/2014 - OBSOLETE: Alright, we're done now!
It's been a great journey, thanks for reading! Anyways, added 2 more cups and
the staff ghost times for all the courses.

Verson 1.0.1 ("Mobius Strip") - 6/24/2014 - OBSOLETE: Added in a contribution to
the Items section.

Version 1.0.2 ("Mobius Strip") - 6/26/2014 - OBSOLETE: Added in a donations
section.

Version 1.0.5 ("Fast") - 6/30/2014 - OBSOLETE: Fixed some stuff.

Version 1.1.0 ("Speed") - 1/25/2016 - CURRENT: Refreshed the cluttered top part
of the guide as well as section headers, and updated the legal section. No
additional content.
