This is the Lynel, one of, if not the strongest enemies in the game. Once provoked, which can be as simple as being close enough, a Lynel will attack the player. Escaping without teleportation can be tough as due to being half horse they can keep up with a player on horseback, not to mention they can and will use their bows at players at distance and/or on horseback. Lynel have both melee and ranged attacks, and are skilled enough with a bow to hit players hiding behind rocks, ledges, or other obstacles. For a beginning player fighting a Lynel is a daunting task as they have great power, range, versatility, mobility, and plenty of HP. It is recommended to prepare well before fighting, if only to have enough weapons to complete the fight. =============================================================================== IV. LYNEL TYPES Lynels come in multiple colors and three distinct weapons types. ******************** A. COLORS (1) Red-Maned Lynel (2,000 HP) The most basic Lynel. Only called a Lynel in game. These creatures have standard base Lynel equipment. These Lynel sport a brown hide and red mane. --------------------- (2) Blue-Maned Lynel (3,000 HP) Blue colored Lynel use the same basic attacks as their red counterparts. They however use the Mighty Lynel weapons to deal even more HP damage. Despite their name these Lynel actually have a pinkish/lavender colored mane and the blue is in their primary hide color. --------------------- (3) White-Maned Lynel (4,000 HP) Also known as Black Lynel. White maned Lynel sport the strongest weapons available to Lynels, the Savage Lynel weapons. They also gain a sort of fire explosion attack where they strike the ground and create a dome of fire in all directions for massive damage. These Lynel have a black striped hide with white manes. --------------------- (4) Silver Lynel (5,000 HP) Same as the White-Maned in terms of equipment and abilities. Will drop gems or star fragments on death in addition to normal Lynel drops. These Lynel sport a silver hide with purple stripes and purple manes. --------------------- (5) Gold Lynel (7,500 HP) Identical to Silver Lynel in all aspects save color and HP. They only appear in the DLC pack The Master Trials These Lynel sport a golden hide with a white mane and yellow stripes. ******************** B. WEAPONS All Lynel wield a bow. And all have horns which they will attack with. There are however three different types of melee weapons the Lynel will carry. --------------------- (1) Sword & Shield This will be the first type of Lynel a play is likely to encounter as one is part of the Zora side story mission, albeit an optional part. Lynel will be armed with a one handed sword and a shield. The shield is never used to block attacks but unlike other shields in the game these have a sharp edge and can do damage when blocking. These Lynel will specialize in close fast swings and running swipes. --------------------- (2) Spear Spear wielding Lynel will hold a large two handed spear. The spear head resembles the blade of the Lynel sword. These Lynel specialize in charging and jumping attacks. --------------------- (3) Club This type of melee fighting Lynel wields the powerful Lynel Crush weapons. These metallic clubs have spiked ends and are extremely powerful. These Lynel specialize in slower but more powerful mid-range melee attacks. =============================================================================== V. GAME COMBAT TECHNIQUES The techniques described in this guide are basic combat techniques in the game. They are however being described in regards to their effectiveness against Lynels. Remote Bombs are not mentioned in basic combat as while they are not mentioned their use against Lynel are minimal at best as Lynel will avoid them, and jump back when near bombs. For bombs against Lynel see the Advanced Combat section below. --------------------- (1) Charge Attack Any melee weapon can be charged up for a more powerful attack by holding the attack button. (Y) While holding the button stamina is used up and the attack will be unleashed on releasing the button or stamina depletion. The charge will power up as the button is held, up to three times for all but heavy melee attack weapons. --------------------- (2) Short Melee Attacks One handed swords, short clubs, and other such weapons are short melee attack weapons. They lack the damage of the heavy damage weapons but are fast attackers and allow the use of the shield while the weapon is wielded. Short melee weapons perform a spin when charged up, the weapon is held behind Link as the attack is charged. Against Lynels the short melee weapons provide rapid attack options without removing the shield defense. They allow quick attacks between a Lynel's action allowing for proactive attacking instead of simply counter attacking. --------------------- (3) Heavy Melee Attacks Two handed swords, crushers, bats, are heavy melee attack weapons. They are slower to wield then their two handed counterparts but can usually hit multiple targets at once and boast some of the strongest attack power in the game. While charging Link will spin around with a heavy melee weapon, striking foes nearby and then unleashing a devastatingly powerful attack once the charge is released. Naturally heavy melee weapons can deal the most damage to a Lynel. However due to both their slow speed and the fact that the shield cannot be held at the same time they are more suited to counter attacking a Lynel then pressing a frontal assault. --------------------- (4) Spear Melee Attacks Like heavy melee weapons spears and lances are two handed weapons and thus prevent Link from using his shield while wielding one. They use quick stabbing attacks to damage opponents with mid-level damage. They also fly long distances easily when thrown. While charging Link will hold the spear behind himself and unleash a series of rapid jabs when the charge is released. Against Lynels a spear weapon is fast and deadly. It can actively press a frontal attack with its speed but caution must be used as it prevents the use of a shield for defense. --------------------- (5) Thrown Weapons All melee weapons have the capacity to be thrown using the right shoulder button. Most melee weapons will deal critical damage when thrown but shatter on impact with a enemy but will be left on the ground if they do not hit anything. Short melee weapons spin in small circles while heavy melee weapons spin in large circles like tops when thrown. Spears however travel much farther in straight arcs like an arrow. Boomerang weapons can be used as melee weapons but also can be thrown. When thrown they will not break on impact with an enemy and if unimpeded will return to Link, though they will have to grabbed as they approach, Link will not automatically catch them. Throwing weapons is of minimal use against Lynels, but have the chance to strike the face of the beast, stunning it. --------------------- (6) Archery Bows can be used against Lynel but should not be used to attack from a distance. It is best used to aim for the face to stun the Lynel, allowing subsequent attacking or mounting the beast for extra damage. When falling from a height greater then a normal jump drawing the bow will cause time to slow down until the stamina wheel is used up, the paraglider is deployed, the bow breaks, or Link lands on the ground. This slow motion allows for greater accuracy aim attacks on moving targets and allows Link to attack rapidly. Against Lynel this can be used to stun them easily or to rapidly damage them with an assault of arrows. --------------------- (7) Stasis Rune+ When the Stasis Rune is upgraded to Stasis Rune+ it can be used to freeze a Lynel in place. However this is best used as a last moment dodge as a Lynel can only be frozen for a second and a half. --------------------- (8) Perfect Dodge When an enemy attacks Link can move to the side of a vertical attack or away from the enemy using a horizontal attack. This can only be done while Link is targeting the enemy. Pressing the joystick in the appropriate direction and pressing Jump (X) will cause Link to jump sideways or back flip out of the way of the attack. Pressing Jump (X) just as the attack is about to connect performs a perfect dodge of the attacks. Time will slow down temporarily, giving the player time to change equipment. During this time if a melee weapon is equipped the attack button (Y) can be pressed repeatedly to perform the Flurry Rush and repeatedly strike the opponent until the time slow ends. All Lynel are vulnerable to the Perfect Dodge and subsequent Flurry Rush counterattack combo. However sword based Lynel are particularly vulnerable. A shield does not need to be deployed or even equipped to perform perfect dodge. --------------------- (9) Perfect Guard While Link is holding his shield up pressing the action button (A) just before an attack connects will perform the Perfect Guard, also known as a Parry. Projectiles will usually be send back to the attacker, and parrying a melee attack will usually stun or off balance the attacker. All Lynel attacks can be parried except their arrow rain attack. Lynel will not however be stunned when a melee attack is parried, they will however usually recoil and pull back, waiting a moment to attack again. Timing the parry will vary depending on the attack used. Perfect Guard requires Link's shield to be both equipped and held in a ready state by targeting the enemy. Performing Perfect Guard will not decrease shield durability. If the player has completed Divine Beast Vah Rudania they can used Daruk's Protection to perform perfect guard if their own is miss timed or not used at all. But this can only be used at more three times before it has to recharge. --------------------- (10) Revali's Gale To use this one must complete Divine Beast Vah Medoh first. Revali's gale creates a powerful updraft when the jump button (X) is held and then released. Doing so will carry Link high into the air. During the charge up however Link is vulnerable to attacks. This can be used against Lynel to set up for archery slow motion shots. Just remember to use the paraglider again for a safe landing. --------------------- (11) Urbosa's Fury To use this one must complete Divine Beast Vah Naboris first. When charging an attack a green energy field will surround Link after a second or so. When the attack button is released Link will both perform the powerful attack but also lighting will rain down in the area, striking all foes nearby. Against Lynels this lighting will cause the same stun as seen when one is shot in the face by an arrow. =============================================================================== VI. COMBATING LYNELS Fighting Lynel can at first seem a daunting task but once the proper techniques are applied becomes fairly straight forward. Basic Lynel fighting is not attacking first but waiting to dodge and counterattack instead. A player must have powerful weapons, enhanced durability is recommended. Most Lynels, in particular the Silver and Gold variants, have a lot of HP and usually require multiple weapons to take down unless the weapons used posses plenty of durability. It is inadvisable to directly block a Lynel's attack as Lynel have enough power to break most shields, baring the Hylian Shield, in only a handful of hits at most if not a single strike. Never engage a Lynel at long range or without it being able to come to your location. If a Lynel cannot reach the player it will switch to attacking with its bow. If it cannot shoot directly at the player it will instead shoot up in the air and the arrows will land on top of the player. Most Lynel are equipped with shock arrows though other regions may vary with other arrow types. They will also use their bows on mounted targets, be it on a horse, animal, or another Lynel. Once engaged in battle the only recommend method of aborting the fight is to teleport using the Sheikah slate. Attempting to run will result in the Lynel giving chase. Climbing or otherwise trying to go to a place the Lynel cannot reach will result in being attacked by the Lynel's bow. All attacks, unless posted otherwise, can be halted using a properly timed Perfect Guard. When a Lynel is stunned, or the player has not been spotted and is above with the paraglider, it is possible to get on the back of a Lynel and strike it with the equipped weapon. This does not damage the equipped weapon. The player will be thrown off when they run out of Stamina or enough damage is done. Stunned Lynel will pant four times before getting up. ******************** A. UNIVERSAL TECHNIQUES The following attacks are used by all Lynel regardless of the type of melee weapon they hold. --------------------- (1) Straight Bow Attacks The Lynel will take their bow and shoot directly at the player. Their shots are long range with high accuracy. they will only use this attack at a range or if they cannot physically reach the player's location. This is an attack better prevented then countered. One can run side to side to try to avoid the attack, but this can be difficult as the Lynel bows shoot three arrows at the same time in a spread. Getting close to the Lynel will prevent this attack. Also do not mount anything else nearby to prevent bow use. --------------------- (2) Air Bow Attacks The Lynel will take their bow and fire upwards into the air. The shots will then rain down atop the player. Lynel will use this from a range or if they cannot get to a player's location. They utilize this attack when the player is behind cover, preventing a direct assault from their bow. Like their normal bow attacks this is better prevented then counter. Running has a chance of avoiding the attack. Approach the Lynel to prevent all bow attacks. This attack cannot be perfect guarded. --------------------- (3) Unarmed Charge The Lynel will put all weapons away and charge at the player on all limbs, attempting to ram Link using their horns. If successful Link will take damage and be thrown airborne in a prone position. This is an attack very easy to avoid. Running to either side will cause Link to being hit. It is a good time however to use Perfect Dodge to get some Flurry Rush hits on the Lynel, jumping to the side as a backflip will let the Lynel hit still. --------------------- (4) Weapon charge The Lynel will have their melee weapon drawn and run around the area, making a pass directly next to Link while swinging their weapon. This is more dangerous when the Lynel has a spear or club instead of a sword. It is possible to perfect dodge this attack, though difficult. The back flip is recommended, though a sword can be side dodged. This attack is straightforward so it is possible to shoot the Lynel in the face as it starts the attack, though missing will get Link hit. --------------------- (5) Fireballs The Lynel will move off to a distance and inhale deeply. Then three times, with a small pause in between each, the Lynel will spit large fireballs at Link. These fireballs have a long range but do not track the player. This is the easiest attack to avoid by far. Simply running to one side will keep Link from behind hit, though switching directions between fireballs is not recommended. During the charge up time the Lynel is wide open for a shot to the face. The fireballs can be perfect guarded, but will not reflect back to the Lynel. If the fireballs travel over grass the grass will catch fire and create an updraft the player can use to start an airborne archery barrage. --------------------- (6) Explosion This attack is not used by Red-Maned or Blue-Maned Lynel. The Lynel will roar, causing plants to blow away from the Lynel. Then the melee weapon will be raised and slammed into the ground, creating a huge fireball dome around the Lynel. This causes massive damage and will light any grass in the area on fire. The easiest way to avoid this attack is to run. Soon as the Lynel starts to roar start to run directly away from the beast. This attack has a large area so you'll need to make some distance. Like the Fireballs the Lynel is stationary and vulnerable to attack with arrows in the face. It is also possible to perfect guard the explosion to avoid damage. If guarding, shooting, or running aren't options it is better run in front and get hit by the weapon itself as that will do less damage then the subsequent explosion. --------------------- (7) Teleportation While not an attack in and of itself Lynel will teleport if they are unable to get to Link or unable to go to their spawn location. After some time of not being attacked and unable to go someplace a Lynel will simply disappear in blue light and reappear in the starting location. --------------------- (8) Weapon Jump The Lynel will leap high in the air and land next to or on top of the player, bringing their weapon down in a powerful attack that creates a shock wave on impact. To counter this attack one needs to either run sideways quickly at the start of the jump or perfect guard to block the shock wave. Spear Lynel always have this attack (see Spear Jump below) but all Lynel can perform the weapon jump attack in Master Mode. Though they do not use it often. ******************** B. SWORD LYNEL TECHNIQUES The following are used by Lynel wielding Sword & Shields only, favoring fast and rapid close attacks. --------------------- (1) Sword Swipes The Lynel will simply stand next to Link and swing its sword back and forth three times. Back flipping is the easiest way to dodge this attack. If you time it right the back flip will become the perfect dodge allowing the flurry rush counterattack. If the first backflip does not become a perfect dodge you must immediately back flip again or the Lynel will strike Link on the back swing. --------------------- (2) Sword & Shield swipe The Lynel holds its arms out then brings them together. Sorta like a bit hug, of death. Both the sword and sharp shield will come down on Link. The Lynel will also move forward considerably. Again back flips are the best method to dodge this attack. Its harder to time for a perfect dodge then just the sword swipes but it can be done. A word of warning, just cause you are out of the range of the sword will not mean you are out of range of this attack as the Lynel will lunge forward to catch Link in the attack. ******************** C. SPEAR LYNEL TECHNIQUES Spear Lynel only have one unique maneuver, their spear jump attack. They however can be difficult to deal with as they utilize their extreme reach granted by their weapon during the universal attacks. --------------------- (1) Spear Jump The Lynel will leap high in the air and land next to or on top of the player, bringing their spear down in a powerful attack that creates a shock wave on impact. To counter this attack one needs to either run sideways quickly at the start of the jump or perfect guard to block the shock wave --------------------- ******************** D. CLUB LYNEL TECHNIQUES The following are used by Lynel wielding their Crusher weapons. They attack with superior brute force attacks that can cause severe damage even with maximum armor. --------------------- (1) Club Spin This can be used anytime but is more commonly used when Link is not in front of the Lynel. The Lynel will lower its club and spin around rapidly. This attack has a wide range. Running away at the moment it starts or a backflip if Link is near the edge can work to avoiding. But if Link is next to the Lynel this attack requires either a sturdy shield or the perfect guard to block. --------------------- (2) Slam Attack The Lynel raises the club high over its head and then slams it down to the ground, creating a powerful shock wave attack. If the Lynel is at a distance it will charge forward while doing this attack Do not get hit with this attack, the weapon delivers massive damage to Link unless you have exceptionally high defense. Even when blocking with a shield if the shield is destroyed the attack can still go through. Dodging this attack is difficult. If Link is far enough to the a perfect dodge may be possible, but most times the shock wave will knock Link out of the time deceleration, preventing a flurry rush counterattack. In the end only the perfect guard is a reliable means of avoiding damage altogether with this attack. --------------------- (3) Rapid Swinging Like the slam attack the Lynel will hoist its crusher over its head. However it will not hold it there for long, and then bring it down without a shock wave however it will raise it and slam it down an additional two times. This attack is easy to dodge by running to one side or the other. To perfect dodge this attack with a sidestep one actually must have a bit of distance between themselves and the Lynel. Right against the Lynel will be to close, so Link has to stand where the club itself, not its handle, will hit the ground. ******************** E. ADVANCED COMBAT The following techniques require a lot of skill and effort to pull off but provide a consistent countermeasure to every technique of a Lynel to allow for victory. Essential tools - Bows and lots of arrows. High damage melee weapons of any type. The higher the damage the fewer bows and arrows will be needed. Durability on the melee weapon does not matter. Bow accuracy is essential to advanced combat. A multi-shot bow (such as a Lynel bow) will greatly aid to the ease of which this can be done. Advanced combat is completely about counterattack, reactions, and timing. It relies solely on the back mount attack for damage, removing the need for a large number of melee weapons in combat. Refer to the Lynel attack list above for the descriptions of moves. It should be noted all reaction techniques, like the mounted attack leading to U-Turn are not 100% guaranteed and you should always be ready for a Lynel to do the unexpected. Particularly when there are environmental hazards such as trees and rocks around. --------------------- (1) Mounted Attack U-Turn Lock Down When the maximum abound of attacks one can do mounted on the back of a Lynel is done Link is thrown of the back and lands battle ready on his feet. (If Link's stamina runs out instead he'll be thrown off and land on his back.) After throwing Link off the Lynel will run forward. If no weapon is in its hand it will equip the weapon. If may either turn around or run around. If it turns around it is an idle opportunity to shoot it in the face. After a mounted attack the Lynel will run away from Link, run towards Link, then perform a U-turn and run away again before turning back to attack. During the U-turn the Lynel is vulnerable to an easy face shot. As Link is thrown off the back relock on with L-Targeting. Do not adjust horizontal aim, but raise the bow up a few taps to level it with the Lynel's face as it charges Link. This will allow an easy face shot to stun the beast. When performed correctly and repeatedly this prevents the Lynel from ever attacking. Utilize the Bomb Damage Accent (see below) to increase the damage dealt and thus decrease the time the battle takes. **IMPORTANT - This only works on sword and club wielding Lynel's. Spear Lynels will not perform the U-Turn and move straight into the next attack. After back mount attacking a spear Lynel prepare the shield for perfect block or be ready for other attacks. --------------------- (2) Perfect Block Counter Attack When a Lynel's Melee attack is counter attacked it will be stunned for a brief moment. Aim the bow up and slightly to the left to acquire an easy face shot. If the shot fails to hit the face and stun, put the bow away and pull the shield out again to prepare another perfect block. Once stunned mount the back and proceed to use the back mount attack. --------------------- (3) Unarmed Charge Counter When the Lynel performs the unarmed charge do not initiate the Flurry Rush. Instead dodge the attack completely and let the Lynel skid to a halt. Most times after this attack it will turn on the spot and perform the fireball attack to follow up. (And the U-Turn all other times) As the Lynel raises its head to charge the fireballs is the best time to stun it and perform the back mount attack. --------------------- (4) Bow Counter If the Lynel cannot get to you either due to a cliff, hill, or even getting caught on a tree stump the Lynel will draw its bow. This is critically dangerous as the Lynel's bow shots, particularly the air bow strike, are extremely difficult to dodge. When the Lynel pulls its bow out you will have a few seconds to run up and strike it with whatever melee weapon you have on hand. This will entice it switch back to its melee weapon. --------------------- (5) Bomb Damage Accent Bombs when used properly can accent the damage to the battle. Preventing the Lynel from regenerating health in Master Mode and adding extra damage to reduce the overall time of the fight. It is recommended only to use square bombs to accent damage as they do not roll easily. Bombs should be deployed as Link is airborne after a back-mounted attack. Or in front of the Lynel after stunning if a bomb is available. Do not spend deploying a bomb if it let's the Lynel recover. Bombs should be detonated as the Lynel is passing over them, but be sure not to get caught in the blast yourself. Note - Bombs used outside of battle will be dodged by the Lynel. Only use them to augment other attacks. =============================================================================== VII. DROPS When a Lynel is defeated it will produce drops like any monster in Breath of the Wild. The only exceptions are the Lynels in Hyrule Castle, they only spawn chests to open. Lynels will release various body parts and drop their weapons. Weapons listed here are unmodified stats. Baring the Lynel Sword, Lynel Shield, and Lynel Bow all normal and mighty Lynel weapons will become unobtainable later in the game as all Lynel will migrate to harder color variants, eventually all becoming Silver (Gold in Master Mode) and thus only Savage Lynel weapons will be obtainable. The Red Lynel near the Zora will remain red and continue to drop its sword, shield, and bow. The blue and White-Maned Lynel in the castle will retain their color but do not drop their weapons upon death. ********************* A. UNIVERSAL All Lynel will drop the following. BOWS All Lynel drop their bow on death. Lynel bows can shoot three arrows at a time but this makes the arrows irretrievable on missing. They can hold the Five Shot Burst modifier to shoot five arrows instead. Base bow damages are per arrow, if each of the multiple arrows strikes the damage output is vastly increased. --------------------- (1) Lynel Bow Unmodified Power: 10 Wielded By: Red Lynel --------------------- (2) Mighty Lynel Bow Unmodified Power: 20 Wielded By: Blue Lynel --------------------- (3) Savage Lynel Bow Unmodified Power: 32 Wielded By: White-Maned, Silver, Gold Lynel =============================================================================== VIII. MISCELLANEOUS Lynel are not fooled forever by the Lynel Mask and Majora's Mask in the DLC. After enough time passes, or Link draws a weapon or the Sheikah Slate, they will become hostile. As Divine Beasts are completed and Lynel are killed they will climb up their class color tiers until only Silver Lynel populate Hyrule. This bars those three special meant to stay at their starting color forever. (Four in Master Mode) Lynel respawn on Blood Moons like any enemy. Lynel are powerful enough to break Lynel Shields in short time. Despite wielding metal weapons lighting is not attracted to Lynel in thunderstorms. Lynel bows of different grades may be found on some floating platforms, wielded by Bokoblins, in master mode. In master mode all Lynel are graded up. Blue Lynel wield normal Lynel gear, Black Lynel wield Mighty Lynel gear, and Silver and Gold Lynel wield Savage Lynel gear. Red Lynel do not exist, except for the one as part of the Zora main quest, which still wields normal Lynel gear. The other exception is the Black Lynel on the plateau wields Savage gear instead of Mighty gear. =============================================================================== X.
