INTRO ======== Super Soccer was the first SNES game I ever bought and after paying £40 for it I was gutted to find it lacked the depth and realism of Amiga soccer games. But after a couple of weeks I realised how much fun this game really is - and who cares if all the player names are made up! So this is my guide to what is now one of my favourite old-school soccer games. I hope you find it useful. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. CONTROLS =========== WITH THE BALL: D-Pad - Run with ball B - Shot or long high pass A - Pass along the ground or low shot Y - Pass to selected receiver (player with big arrow above his head) X - Not used L - Change pass receiver R - Change pass receiver START - Change pass receiver SELECT - Pause WITHOUT THE BALL: D-Pad - Move player around the pitch B - Slide tackle A - Slide tackle Y - Shoulder barge (body check) X - Not used L - Not used R - Not used START - Not used SELECT - Pause KICK-OFF: B - Pass to selected receiver (player with big arrow above his head) Y - Pass to selected receiver (player with big arrow above his head) L - Change pass receiver R - Change pass receiver CORNER: D-Pad - Use UP and DOWN to move direction pointer B - Take corner FREE-KICK: D-Pad - Move direction pointer B - High pass A - Low pass Y - Pass to selected receiver (player with big arrow above his head) L - Change pass receiver R - Change pass receiver PENALTY KICK: D-Pad - Aim player left or right B - Take penalty PLAYING TIPS ============ General Play ------------ ATTACKING: (long shots, aim for top/bottom corners with diagonal shots) DEFENDING: Always use shoulder charge to tackle unless your player already has a yellow card (see 'Cards' section below). The shoulder charge is much more successful than the slide tackle. PASSING: I always use the short pass (B Button) as it's quicker and less fiddly than the other passing methods. Set Pieces ---------- CORNERS: (from left) press down once, take corner with B, run right to meet it, head/volley ball at near post. PENS: Always aim for one of the corners as there will be less chance of the goalie saving it. When you have a penalty against you it's very difficult to save (harder than in shoot-out mode. The best way is to just predict in your mind where it might go and dive that way as soon as the player kicks. TIP: They usually aim for the bottom corners. FREE KICKS: Shooting direct is pointless. Best to pass it short and work a move as you would in open play. GOAL KICKS: Hit them straight forward as far as you can and try to head the ball on with one of your outfield players. THROW-INS: Throw-ins are pretty useless in Super Soccer, but the best way to use them is to throw to the nearest man then try to run into some space to create a move. Cards --------- - The refs in this game give out cards pretty randomly but it is almost always (99% of the time) for shoulder charge tackles. - If a player has been yellow-carded already (his number over his head will be flashing), then don't shoulder charge with him unless you have to. You risk getting him sent off. - If you do get a player sent off there are things you can do to cover for him. The simplest is to move a player for a less important position to fill in his position. For example if you have a central defender sent off, move a left-back or right-back into his position as CPU teams rarely attack down the wings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. GAME MODES ============= There are 3 types of game to play: SINGLE GAME - A single match between any two teams. SHOOTOUT - A penalty shootout between two teams. TOURNAMENT - A World Championship were you must beat every other team. SINGLE GAME ----------- In a single game, first you choose between the following options: 1P VS COM - A single-player game against computer controlled opponents. 1P VS 2P - A 2-player game. Player 1 against Player 2. 1P 2P VS COM - Player 1 and Player 2 team up against a computer opponent. This just kind of a practice mode where you can play against any team, or you can have a multiplayer game against a friend. In this mode you can choose how long you want each half to last, between 1 minute and 99 minutes! I would recommend never choosing 99 minute halves, as that would mean a 198-minute match (that's over 3 hours!!) and if you don't die of boredom first, your thumbs will fall off if you play for this long - you have been warned. SHOOTOUT -------- If you are not familiar with penalty shoot-outs, this is how they work: - Each team gets 5 penalty-kicks, taken alternately. - Whoever scores the most penalties is the winner. - If the score is tied after both teams have taken 5 penalties, both teams take a sixth penalty. If the scores are still tied, both teams take a seventh penalty, and so on, and so on. This continues until there is a winner. So here's how you play a shootout on Super Soccer. TAKING PENALTIES: First of all, decide where you're going to aim for. There are 9 places in the goal that you can aim for: the left side, the right side, the four corners, above the goalie, between the goalie's legs, and straight down the middle. When playing against the computer I would recommend always aiming for one of the corners, otherwise the goalie stands a good chance of saving. Next you need to take the penalty kick. You can either hit it hard or soft. Soft shots do work (especially against human opponents) but I always prefer to use hard shots as it makes it harder to save. To take the penalty using a soft shot, just aim and press B. To use a hard shot you need to aim, press B and then just as your player kicks the ball, press B again. SAVING PENALTIES: This is a pretty tricky thing to pull of and if you save more than 2 penalties in one shootout, you're doing well. Basically to make a save, push a direction on the D-pad and press B to dive. The best way to save a penalty is to have good reactions: wait until you see which direction the ball is going, then make your save. But this can be very hard when the opponent uses a mixture of hard and soft shots. The other way to save a penalty is just to guess. Pick a direction in your mind and as soon as the player hits the ball, dive and hope for the best. BEATING A HUMAN OPPONENT: There are a few tips you can use in shootouts, when playing against a friend. - SNEAKY PEEK: Try to get a sneaky look at where your opponent is aiming, on his controller. Then dive that way to save his shot. - HIDE YOUR PAD: Don't let your opponent get a sneaky peek of your pad. - MIX IT UP: Use a mixture of hard and soft shots, this way your opponent might mis-time his saves. Even better, use mostly hard-shots but occasionally throw a soft one in and it's almost guaranteed to score. - STRAIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE: Occasionally aim your shot straight at the goalie. If your opponent uses the 'guessing' method of saving, they will always dive out of the way. TOURNAMENT ---------- There are 2 options when you select TOURNAMENT: NEW GAME - Start a new tournament. CONTINUE - Enter a code, to continue a previous tournament game. Tournament mode is what Super Soccer is really all about. You play a series of games against every team (apart from the one that you control) - 15 games in total - to try and become the World Champion. You start off by playing the worst team (Belgium) and work your way up to the best team (Germany). Games in tournament mode always have 5-minute halves. After each game in a tournament you will see a continue code (on the screen where your final score appears). This code is made up of 8 arrows, which represent directions on the control pad. When you select CONTINUE from the main menu you will be taken to a screen which looks like the shootout screen but with 8 circles at the bottom. Enter the code by holding the correct direction and pressing B. If you got it right a player will take a penalty and score it - if you entered it wrong, he will miss. If you manage to complete the Tournament (ie you beat Germany) you will then be challenged by the NINTENDO team, who play all in black and have by far the best players in the whole game. If you beat the Nintendo team, then you really have completed the game (well, the Easy mode of the game anyway). After the ending sequence you'll be given a code so that you can unlock EXPERT MODE. Beating the game in expert mode is a lot tougher but when you finally beat the Nintendo team in Expert mode, that's it. You have finally beaten the game to within an inch of it's life. I've also listed the attributes of each player (ratings out of 15) as shown in the game. They must improve their defence, however, if they expect to challenge for the top spot in the world." Japan have the worst in the entire game, by a long way. However, Yoshi is a very good forward who has a better attack rating than anyone else in the whole game and Jiro is the second-best all round player in Super Soccer. Two very good secret weapons in an otherwise useless team. Japan also have to 'hidden' good players in the reserves - Jun and Shin. They are certainly not great players but if you play as Japan always make sure you select them in the starting eleven. ************************************************* 5.13 COLOMBIA ************************************************* SUPER SOCCER SAYS: "This team has incredible jumping ability and constantly hustles to the ball. But technically the very best players are Phil (MID), Mark (FOR) & Jeff (FOR). Every player is better than anything in any other team - if only you could BE them! ;) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. TRICKS + CHEATS ================== BE THE NINTENDO ALL-STARS ------------------------- There is a way you can BE the Nintendo All-Star team but only in a 2-player exhibition match. Here's how: From the main menu, select EXHIBITION. Then choose SINGLE GAME. Then choose 1P VS 2P. Now, in the "Select Team" screen, using the Player 2 controller, hold down START and press B. This should make the NINTENDO team appear and you can now destroy Player 1 with the best team in the game. UNLOCK EXPERT MODE ------------------ Go to Tournament mode and select CONTINUE. Enter the following code to open the expert mode: Up-right / down-left / right / down / down-right / left / down-left / up-left Now you'll be taken back to the title screen where you'll see the word EXPERT appear underneath the title. Now go to TOURNAMENT and start a NEW GAME to begin expert mode. EASY SCORING ------------ There is one easy way to score in Super Soccer - and I mean seriously EASY! It's easiest to do this when shooting 'up' the pitch (i.e. you can see the goal from far away). Basically whenever you get the ball in the opponent's half of the field, line your player up with the edge of the goal, aim straight forward and shoot as hard as you can. Even if you are miles away from the goal you stand a chance of it going in but if you are 20-35 yards away it's almost certain to go in the top corner - as long as you lined it up right. It only takes a few attempts to get the hang of this and start rattling up huge scores. The only trouble is it very rarely works against the real good teams like Germany and Italy - and never works against Ireland because their goalie is just too good. Also, another quick tip for scoring: - Aim diagonal shots just inside the near post (specially the bottom corner)! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7.
