The game is a lot like the 8-bit version of the game, but with RPG-like features. You can create your own team, buy power-ups and special moves, change game settings and even create your own characters (you can even headhunt members from the other teams including leaders). Sadly, despite the cult following Super Dodgeball had in America, Kunio-kun no Dodgeball was announced for U.S release by American Technos, but it missed the boat alongside Crash n' the Boys: Ice Challenge and Soccer Challenge. However, thanks to the internet, the game can now be play on emulators or you can easily find the real thing (it's one of most requested Super Famicom game on eBay). The game uses very basic Japanese, anyone who can read hiragana and has a dictionary in his hand can understand the game's menu. However, if your Japanese is poor, this guide will help you out. ======================================== GETTING STARTED ======================================== When you start the game, you will be taken to the main "Game Mode" menu. The choices are written in romaji with my not-so literal translations in paratheses: DOJJIBOURU KACHINUKI (Tournament Mode) DOJJIBOURU TAISEN (Versus Mode) MECHABUTSUKE TAISEN (Bean Ball Mode) CHIIMU RISUTO (Team List) ARUBAMU MIRU (Album View) SEEBU SURU (Save Data) The Tournament Mode is the main 1-player mode. Here, you use one of three custom-made teams as battle their way to victory agaisnt teams from other nations (including another Japanese team). You can choose your lineup, buy power-ups, adjust the stages, change formation, secret shots, ect. The game ends when you defeat the American Team. With multitap, you can have three other players control the other main players. Versus Mode is the main multi-player mode, although it can be played alone. Up to four or five players can compete agaisnt each other or team up agaisnt the computer. You can choose the rule for each team and the number of athletes in each team. The rules consist of one member hits, two member hits, all members hits, one member eliminated, two eliminated and all eliminated (default). Bean Ball Mode is a lot like the Versus, except there is no outfield players and the arenas are free-roaming. Team List is where you can create your own custom, view each member's status, erase teams and adjust them. Album View is where you can view snapshots of your final victories in Tournament Mode, as well as statistics of your team. Save Data is where you save your game. When navigating through menu, Y is for confirming a choice and B is for cancelling a previous choice. The X & A buttons are used when changing pages in the shop or member list. ======================================== CREATE YOUR TEAM ======================================== To create your custom team, choose either: Tournament Mode or Team List. You will taken to the Team List menu. There three slots for three custom teams, each with ten members. The team's default names and uniforms are: Nekketsu (white shirts and red pants) Hanazono (white shirts and blue pants) Reihou (white shirts and green pants) Below the three files are five options: MENBAA RISUTO (Member List) CHIIMU SAKUSEI (Team Create) CHIIMU KAISAN (Team Erase) SENSHU IREKAE (Player Exchange) CHIIMU SETTEI (Team Settings) Member List is where you get to see all the players you have at your disposal. Here you can view stats, current affiliations, perfomances, ect. Here, you can also change the player's appearances (face and skin color) and their names. You've also get to see their number of victories, defeats, shots, hits, passes, catches, intercepts, misses and MVP titles. You also get to see the player's number, player's type, which is determined by three letters (Defense, Offense and Movement or DOM) and palyer's class (16 ranks from S1-D3). Team Create is where you get to create your team. Choose a file, then choose which members you want and then you get to choose your team's name, uniforms (pants and shirts) and date of foundation. Team Erase is where you get to delete your custom teams. The player's status will remain the same. Player Exchange is where you get to change one team's player for another that is employed or unemployed at another of your custom teams. Team Settings is where you can check everything about each custo, team without going into the game such as their members, the items they are carrying, the money they have, the number of victories and defeats, ect. Team Erase and Player Exchange are straightforward, but the Team Settings needs a bit of an explanation. When you choose Team Settings, you're given the following options: CHIIMU DEETA (Team Data) SHOPPU (Shop) AITEMU RISUTO (Item List) SUTEETASU (Status) SUTEETASU WARIFURI (Status Assign) KIHON SAKUSEN (Basic Strategy) MARUHI SAKUSEN (Advance Strategy) FAAMEESHON (Formation) HISSATSU RISUTO (Secret List) HISSATSU SETTEI (Secret Settings) Team Data is every basic details about the particular team is told such as the money they have, the number of victories and defeats. Here you can change the team's name and uniforms as well as their foundation date. Shop is where you buy items for your team using the money you won from your victories. Press X or A to change pages. Item List is where you get to see your iventory and use whatever item you wish you to use. Status is where you get to see statictics of each player such as ball power, ball speed, jump, ect. Status Assign is how much you want to concentrate on a player's specific statictics. The default setting is 10% on each category. Basic Strategy is the action a CPU-controlled teammember will take. Press X or A to switch between In-Field and Out-Field. The options from left to right in Infield Mode (catch enemy's shot) are: Catch, Block, Dodge and Run. On Out-Field Mode (Approximity to Opposing Team's Infield) from Left to Right are: Cut-Off, Near, Away, Shifting. Advance Strategy is more specific strategy involving you and your teammates. This strategy can be used by specific commands during gameplay. More on that later Formation is the formation of the players in the main field. Secret List is a list of each player's secret shots. And finally, Secret Settings is to set how each Secret Shot is pull off (Dashing, Low Jump, High Jump, Diving Jump) and their timing. ======================================== VERSUS & BEAN BALL MODE SETTINGS ======================================== The options in the Versus and Bean Ball Mode are a bit different from thoses in the normal Tournament Mode. Before choosing your team, you will be given the following options on a menu called "Taisen Jouken" (Versus Rules). The options on the left and right side are the same. The only thing that changes is the first two/four options. TAISEN (Enter) TAISEN OWARU (Leave) TAISEN SUU (# of Rounds) YUUSHOU KACHISUU (# of Victories) Enter is the first option on the left, it will take you to the Team Select screen. Leave is the first option on the right, it will take you to the Main Menu. # of Rounds is self-explanatory and # of victories is the how much rounds a player must win to win the match. The following the options are the same on both sides, the left are for Team 1 and the right are for Team 2. TAISEN NINZUU (# of Players) ZEN'IN TAOSUTO (Defeat Everyone) ICHIBAN WO TAOSUTO (Defeat Captain) HITORI TAOSUTO (First Defeat) ZEN'IN HITTO SURU TO (Hit Everyone) ICHIBAN WO HITTO SURU TO (Hit Captain) HITORI HITTO SURU (First Hit) JIKAN SEIGEN (Time Limit) The # of Players refers to the players on the infield. Defeat Everyone to First Hit are the self-explanatory each team can choose and Time Limit (which is only on the left side) is self-explanatory too. After making your adjustments, choose two teams and then choose a stage (you're limited to either team's nation or a previously visited stage from the Tournament Mode). Then you'll see a screen called "Sakusen Taimu" (Strategy Time) eighteen choices, nine on the left side of the screen and nine on the right. The first choice on the left is "Shiai" which is to start the match and the right is "Shiai Yameru", which will take you back to the main Versus Menu. The Second to Seventh choices are the same thing on both side, but the ones in the left are for the first team and one on the right is for the second: CHIIMU DEETA (Team Data) SENSHU RISUTO (Player List) KIHON SAKUSEN (Basic Strategy) MARUHI SAKUSEN (Advance Strategy) FAAMEESHON (Formation) HISSATSU RISUTO (Secret List) HISSATSU SETTEI (Secret Setting) They're pretty much the same thing as the options in the Team Setting Mode of the Team List. Player List is a list of all the players in each team. You can check a player's status by pressing Y and you can even compare entire's team stats (and organize their players too). The rest of the options from left to right and up to down are: GEEMUSETTEI HENKOU (Adjust Game Settings) SANKANIZUU HENKOU (Number of Players) TAISENCHIIMU HENKOU (Change Teams) SEEBU SURU (Save Data) Adjust Game Settings allows you to change options for the game (such as as well the ability to hit your teammates) and obstacles for the specific level you're in. Number of Players allows you add your buddies to the game and choose which size he can take. Up to Four-Players can join. You can switch courts. Change Teams allows you to change your team if you're not with your choice. Save Data is quite obvious. ======================================== DEFINITIONS OF STATS ======================================== When checking a player's stats, it is nice to know what each category means. Each category has three sets of numbers. KIHONCHI (Basic) is the basic number of that particular category. AITEMU+ is the extra numbers given by a specific item the is wearing.
