Introduction Well, this is my first FAQ intended for public consumption, so please bear with me if it seems awkward in any way. Super Robot Wars (or Taisen) Gaiden is but one game of the venerable Super Robot Wars series, and one of the two games in the series to focus on the travails of the young man Masaki, pilot of the Masou Kishin of Wind, Cybaster. Gaiden is an unusual game in the series for a number of reasons - firstly, and most immediately apparent is that the mechs in this game are not super- deformed, as they are in nearly all SRW games. Secondly, Gaiden is unique in that it features only one type and series of mecha - the masoukis and various associated mecha. Lastly, Gaiden includes a number of gameplay concepts that haven't appeared in any other SRW games (to my knowledge), including Facing, Zone of Control, three-dimensional terrain, and ki-improved mecha stats. All in all, it's a very different SRW, but it's one of the best, in my opinion. On a final note, keep in mind that I do not read Japanese, and as such all proper names are either missing or derived from other sources (primarily Pistol's excellent FAQ/Walkthrough). 2. Unit Stats SRW veterans will notice that mecha stats in Gaiden are significantly different from the norm in the series. Firstly, there is no stat relating to the overall responsiveness of a mech (ie Mobility). Accuracy and dodging ability are the products of pilot stats, facing, weapon accuracy mods, and terrain height differences. Likewise, there is no stat indicating the Size of a mech, as all mecha in this game are of the same type and size. Terrain stats are also missing, as the entire game is land-based (units hover over water). Lastly, the Energy (EN) stat has been replaced by a Magic power stat (MG) which functions almost identically to its more common counterpart. What we're left with are Movement (how far the mech can move), Armor (reduces damage done to the mech), HP (how much damage the mech can sustain), and MG (needed to use some weapons, recovers 5 each turn). Lastly, each mech has an elemental affiliation (Wind, Earth, Water, Fire, none) and a class (haven't figured out the specific classes yet). These are compared to the same stats of enemy mecha and have an effect on damage dealt/taken. All of a mech's stats (except its elemental affiliation and class) are affected by its pilot's Prana (ki) stat. Basically, because masouki are magical as well as mechanical, they are affected by the strength of their pilot's spirit. The formulae work like this: Movement = Mech stat + (Prana)/32 Armor = Mech stat + (Prana)*5 HP = Mech stat + (Prana)*10 MG = Mech stat + (Prana)/2 Where 'Mech stat' is the mech's base stat plus any purchased upgrades (and Max Bonuses), and Prana is the pilot's CURRENT Prana stat (which means that mech stats can be improved during battle via levelling up). Note that HP and MG refer to max stats, not current (in other words, if they're improved in combat, you'll have to use a Seishin or unit ability to make up the difference, even if the stat was previously maxed). Elemental affinities are affected by one another in a circular pattern, with each element being weak to one other element, strong against another, and neutral towards the last. (Mecha with no elemental affinity are neutral towards all elements and all elements are neutral towards them.) The pattern is as follows (the arrow indicates the previous element is strong towards the next): Wind -> Earth -> Water -> Fire -> Wind In other words, Wind masoukis do more damage to Earth element foes, and receive more damage from Fire element foes. Likewise, a Wind masouki receives less damage from an Earth element foe and does less damage to a Fire element foe. While the elemental affinities are not terribly important when fighting grunt enemies, they are crucial during strong boss battles, as a boss that is strong against a masouki's element can often destroy even a fully upgraded machine in one or two hits. Likewise, it can be very difficult to deal sufficient damage against a strong boss if you don't make the effort to line up a strong attack by a masouki strong to the elemental affinity of the boss. Class also apparently affects damage dealt, with higher class mecha receiving a bonus to damage against lower class machines. Unlike elements, this doesn't seem quite as critical, although that may only be because I haven't sorted out the specific classes yet. (According to Pistol's guide, the attack/defense bonus for having an element strong to your opponent's is 20%, while the attack/defense bonus for being a higher class mech is 10% per class level difference. I haven't tested or verified either of these.) Lastly, as with other SRW games, mecha in Gaiden may have special Abilities, although some of the Abilities normally associated with mecha are pilot skills (such as Afterimage) or are present on all mecha in Gaiden and thus not noted individually (all mecha in Gaiden can be used with the "Cutting Sweep"-esque pilot skill "Slash Back".) As a result, the list is rather short: HP Recover - The unit recovers ?% of its max HP every turn. Repair - The unit can repair some of the damage sustained by a friendly mech. Supply - The unit can refill a friendly mech's ammo and MG at the cost of 10 of the target's Morale. Note: I am unsure if HP Recover recovers the same amount for every unit it is on, or whether it varies (as indicated in Pistol's guide). I will likely look into it as part of later runthroughs. Note: Notice that there is no Transform Ability - Cybaster only transforms into the Cybird as part of one of its attacks in Gaiden. Considering Cybaster's potentially ridiculous Movement stat and the fact that the battles are all land-based, the ability to become the jet-like Cybird isn't really missed, in any case. 3. Upgrading Units Only three of a mech's stats can be upgraded directly: Armor, HP, and MG. Movement can only be increased either by increasing the pilot's Prana by levelling up, or sometimes as part of a Max Bonus. A mech can only gain new Abilities as part of a Max Bonus. The amount each upgrade increases a stat by varies by the stat and by how many times the stat has already been upgraded. The maximum number of upgrades for each stat is 7. (Totals are indicated after the semicolon.) Upgrade Bonus Armor +50, +100, +150, +200, +250, +250, +300; +1,300 HP +200, +300, +400, +500, +600, +700, +800; +3,500 MG +10, +10, +10, +10, +20, +20, +20; +100 Upgrade Costs ('k' indicates a thousand) Armor 0.5k, 1k, 2k, 4k, 8k, 15k, 20k; 50.5k HP 2k, 4k, 6k, 10k, 14k, 18k, 25k; 79k MG 0.5k, 1k, 1.5k, 2k, 2.5k, 3k, 4k; 14.5k In addition, once all three of a unit's upgradable stats have been maxed out, it receives what I call a Max Bonus. A Max Bonus typically (but not always) includes a final increase in both Armor and HP, as well a potential increase in Movement and even additional Abilities. Note: The stats expressed on the Unit Upgrade screen are the unit's stats adjusted by the pilot's Prana stat. To see the unit's own stats (base stat plus upgrades) you must go to the Unit Status screen. In the bottom left corner will be the unit's stats (in grey), the Prana bonuses (in yellow), and the total (in white). 4. Weapon Stats For the most part, weapon stats in Gaiden are much more in line with what is typically seen in the SRW series. They include: Type - Shot or Strike. Determines which pilot stat is used with this weapon. Properties - "P" (post-movement) and/or "MAP" Damage - The base damage (including upgrades) a weapon deals. Hit - The bonus (or penalty) to accuracy when using this weapon. Range - How close/far away the attacker must be to/from the target. Ammo - How many times this weapon can be used. (1 use consumes 1 ammo.) MG - How much MG the weapon consumes. (Not enough MG, weapon cannot be used.) Prana - How much Prana (pilot stat) the weapon consumes. (Same as MG.) Morale - How much Morale the pilot needs. (Morale is not consumed.) Unlike most other SRW games, in Gaiden it is not uncommon for a weapon to require both Ammo and MG. In fact, some weapons in Gaiden consume Ammo, MG, AND Prana. Experienced SRW players will already know these, but a property of "P" means that that particular weapon can be used either before or after moving (weapons without the "P" can only be used if the attacker hasn't moved.) This doesn't apply to counterattacks (both "P" and non-"P" weapons can be used as a counter, regardless of whether the unit moved on its previous turn.) The "MAP" property refers to a weapon that hits all units standing within a certain pattern on the map. This is the only way to hit multiple units with one attack. "MAP" weapons cannot be used as counters, and cannot be countered. In addition to the above stats, there is one more stat displayed on the weapon screen - Adjusted Damage. Basically, this is the Base Damage (plus upgrades), adjusted by the pilot's relevant attack stat (Shooting for Shot weapons and Melee for Strike weapons.) Pilot attack stats in Gaiden are expressed as decimals (ie 1.26, 2.39, etc) and the weapon's Damage is simply multiplied by that decimal. (So a Strike weapon with a Damage of 1000 used by a pilot with a Melee stat of 1.25 would have an Adjusted Damage of 1250.) On the default weapon screen, Adjusted Damage is located just below the weapon's Damage stat. On the more traditionally SRW-like weapon screen (switch between the two by pressing L and R when on the weapon screen), the damage stat expressed is the Adjusted Damage. (Likewise on the upgrade screen.) 5. Upgrading Weapons Like units, you can also upgrade weapons. Unlike units, however, a weapon can only be upgraded in one aspect - its attack power. Upgrade Bonus Damage +100, +100, +200, +200, +300, +300, +300; +1,500 Upgrade Cost Damage 2k, 4k, 6k, 10k, 14k, 18k, 25k; 79k Like Max Bonuses, there is a twist to upgrading weapons in Gaiden as well - some weapons have an arrow pointing to the right at the end of their upgrade bar on the Weapon Upgrade screen. These weapons have an Advanced Version - a more powerful version that is achieved by fully upgrading the weapon. Advanced Versions typically have a higher Base Damage, greater range, better Hit mods, and more Ammo. They typically have a new name, a new appearance, and some even gain new abilities (in the case of some MAP weapons, anyway). There's a catch, however - two, in fact. Firstly, Advanced Versions of a unit's more powerful weapons often have increased MG and Prana costs and Morale requirements. Secondly, once a weapon changes to its Advanced Version, it reverts to having zero upgrades. 6. MAP Weapons There are two patterns of MAP weapons in Gaiden. The first, Radial, is by far the more common of the two, and very simple to understand. Essentially, all the spaces within the MAP weapon's range are targets. If the weapon's range is 1~5 (1 to 5), then all units at least 1 space away from the attacker (ie right next to) and no more than 5 spaces away will be attacked by the MAP weapon. The other pattern, Linear, has only one example - Granveil's Megido Flame. With a Linear MAP weapon, you choose a space within the range of the weapon, and all targets standing on a straight path between the attacker and the target space (including any unit standing on top of the target space) will be attacked by the MAP weapon. The path will take diagonals if the line is not straight, so there's no cheating and managing to eke out extra spaces by using a semi-diagonal path. Likewise, look at the target-area preview carefully once you've selected your target space to make sure you're actually going to hit the units you think you're going to hit. Some MAP weapons also have the unique property of potentially being able to hit allied units. Upgrading the weapon to its Advanced Version will get rid of this nasty downside. 7. Units In addition to the pertinent statistics and weapon information, I'm including a visual description of each unit so that non-Japanese readers can more easily determine which statistics go with which unit. The information following the arrows in the statistics block for each unit are the unit's stats after receiving its Max Bonus. The information following the arrows in the statistics block of a weapon are the stats for that weapon's Advanced Version. Currently, I only have (and only plan to have) the stats for units the player can control. (In other words, no enemy units or uncontrollable NPC units.) a. Acknowledgements I'd like to thank, credit, honor, and otherwise recognize the following people: CJayC - for being responsible for one of, if not THE, most indispensable resources on the internet. I've been using GameFaqs for a long time now, and it feels good to finally contribute. Pistol - for his absolutely excellent guide and walkthrough to this game. Without his guide, I'd never have had the confidence (or the ability) to produce a FAQ for a game in a language I don't know. Nearly all the character and mecha names were derived from his guide, as well as all the scenario names. The SRW community in general - if only because it's great to know that there are other people out there who are as obsessed about mecha as I am. Any and all FAQ writers who know how to make a clean, informative, comprehensive, and accurate document. There's nothing like looking at a new guide and thinking "Man, this is really well put-together." Hopefully people will say that about this one. =P 9. To Do List Run through the game on final route, and to pick up Tian and double-check rumor of Ahamud in second part of game. Get someone with knowledge of Japanese to help me with all those missing names. See if HP Recover is the same for all units or not. Decipher unit Classes. Double-check all weapons with Advanced Versions for changes in Properties.
