Closing and Acknowledgements Game Engine =============== GWED isn't unlike Capcom's Marvel vs Capcom series: it uses a tall battlefield rather than a wide one, allowing for aerial battles, and features some pretty unfair combos. A few noticeable differences, however, exist: -Four attack buttons: Strong and weak punch, strong and weak weapon. -Special attacks and supermoves can be performed using any button. -You can attack downed opponents, allowing for even worse cheese combos. -Specials and supers cost energy. Weak specials cost nothing, strong ones cost 100 energy, and supers cost 200. Energy is regained by successfully attacking or blocking an opponent's attacks. Terminology =============== HW/LW/HP/LP: Heavy weapon, light weapon, heavy punch, light punch DF, DB: Down-forward, down-back DP: Dragon Punch motion (Forward, down, DF) Universal Moves =============== Dash: Tap forward twice Retreat: Tap back twice High-Power Jump: 2 Attack buttons together. Blocking Rush: Forward + 2 Attacks Double Jump: Direction + 2 Attacks in air Triple Jump: Direction + 2 Attacks after Double Jump Vernier: Down in air after Jump, High-Power Jump, or Double Jump. Slows your character's descent. You can attack during this time, but you will fall to the ground afterwards. Vulcan: HP or LP when half a screen away. Vulcans cost energy, and are generic projectiles. All characters except Epyon have vulcans. Characters =============== Wing Gundam (XXXG-01W) Pilot: Heero Yuy Fighting: 130 Weapon: 140 Speed: 150 Power: 120 Armor: 130 Weapons: Vulcan Gun (2), Machine Cannon (2), Buster Rifle, Beam Sabre Player's Notes: Fans of Ryu, Capcom's first (and, IMO, best) fighter, will find Wing to be very close to the Shotokan brawler. Specials: Buster Rifle Blast (5 per shot)-Down, DF, forward + Attack; Ground or air Wing fires a blast out of its buster rifle. Light fires one small shot; heavy fires three big shots. Shield Uppercut (17-23)-DP + Attack; Ground or air Wing performs a rising uppercut attack with its shield that ends with a beam sabre slash. Light version hits three times; heavy hits five times. Wing Combination (13-22)-Down, DB, back + Attack; Ground only Wing rushes at the opponent, connecting with its shield and beam sabre. Light version hits twice, heavy version hits three times. Both knock the opponent down if they connect. Supers: Super Buster Rifle (33)-Down, DF, forward, down, DF, forward + Attack; Ground or air Wing fires three large shots from its buster rifle. Hits nine times. Bird Mode (40)-Down, DB, back + Attack; Ground only Wing leaps off-screen and enters Bird mode, flying across the screen three times. Hits up to five times with each pass. Wing is invincible during this move. Playing as Wing: Fighting Wing: =============== Gundam Deathscythe (XXXG-01D) Pilot: Duo Maxwell Fighting: 140 Weapon: 120 Speed: 160 Power: 120 Armor: 120 Weapons: Vulcan Gun (2), Machine Cannon (2), Beam Scythe Player's Notes: SHORYUKEN! Deathscythe channels Ken, the more offensive Shotokan fighter, with a powerful, multi-hit uppercut. Specials: Buster Shield (11)-Down, DF, forward + Attack; Ground only Deathscythe throws its buster shield at the opponent. Both versions hit three times, but heavy version moves Deathscythe next to the opponent after the second hit. Rising Scythe (11-17)-DP + Attack; Ground or air Deathscythe performs a rising slash with its beam scythe. Light version hits three times, heavy hits five times. Super: Shinigami (38)-Down, DF, forward, down, DF, forward + Attack; Ground or air Deathscythe performs an enhanced version of its light rising slash, with greater horizontal range and a wave of yellow energy emitting from the scythe's blade. Hits nine times. Notes: Dashing causes Deathscythe to teleport. This is a good diversionary tactic, but beware: the computer will throw overzealous teleporters. Playing as Deathscythe: Fighting Deathscythe: =============== Gundam Heavyarms (XXXG-01H) Pilot: Trowa Barton Fighting: 110 Weapon: 160 Speed: 110 Power: 140 Armor: 140 Weapons: Vulcan Gun (2), Machine Cannon (2), Gatling Gun (2), Army Knife, Beam Gatling Gun, Homing Missile (12), Micro-Missile (24) Player's Notes: Heavyarms is a slow powerhouse fighter with lots of projectile specials. Fortunately, unlike in the anime, Heavyarms can't run out of bullets or missiles. Specials: Gatling Shot (9-17)-Down, DF, forward + Attack; Ground only Heavyarms fires its beam gatling gun. Light version hits three times, heavy hits five times. Homing Missile (16-29)-DP + Attack; Ground or air Heavyarms fires missiles from its chest. All missiles hit twice each. Light version fires one missile, heavy fires two. Gatling Slam (11-19)-Down, DB, back + Attack; Ground only (throw range) Heavyarms grabs the opponent and smashes them with the doors on its chest. Heavy version is followed by six vulcan shots. Super: Full Arsenal (44)-Down, DF, forward, down, DF, forward + Attack; Ground only Heavyarms opens its chest, shoulder, and leg doors and bombards the enemy with massive explosions. Hits seven times and carries the enemy upwards. Notes: Crouching HW fires several small missiles, a good anti-air move or combo finisher. Standing HW hits low, good for downed opponents. Combos: Throw, dash in, crouching LW, crouching HP, standing HW, Full Arsenal Playing as Heavyarms: Fighting Heavyarms: =============== Gundam Sandrock (XXXG-01SR) Pilot: Quatre Rabera Winner Fighting: 120 Weapon: 120 Speed: 110 Power: 150 Armor: 160 Weapons: Heat Shotel (2), Beam Sub-Machinegun, Missile (2), Cross Crusher Player's Notes: Sandrock is a good all-around character, with a nice variety of moves. Specials: Shotel Cutter (7-9)-Down, DF, forwand + Attack; Ground or air Sandrock throws a projectile from its heat shotels. Light version hits once, heavy hits twice. Desert Smash (19-28)-DP + Attack; Ground only (throw range) Sandrock grabs the opponent and performs a special throw. In the light version, it headbutts the opponent three times. In the heavy version, Sandrock performs a powerbomb. Shotel Charge (13-19)-Down, DB, back + Attack; Ground only Sandrock performs a rushing combo with its heat shortels. Light version hits three times, heavy hits four times. Super: Army Assault (3 per shot)-Down, DF, forward, down, DF, forward + Attack; Ground only Sandrock pulls out its uzi and fires at its opponent while a series of identical shots come from off-screen (the Maganac mercenaries, probably). Hits 19-21 times. Notes: Super hits the opponent even if they jump behind Sandrock, due to the off-screen shots. =============== Gundam Shen-Long (XXXG-01S) Pilot: Chang Wufei Fighting: 160 Weapon: 110 Speed: 130 Power: 140 Armor: 120 Weapons: Dragon Fang, Flamethrower (2), Beam Glaive Player's Notes: Shen-Long has only two moves and one super, but all can be used in the air and have nice effects. In a Street Fighter context, he's sort of like E. Honda, but sort of not. Specials: Dragon Fang (14-29)-Down, DF, forward + Attack; Ground or air Shen-Long reaches out with its dragon fang. Light version hits twice, heavy hits twice, then throws the opponent over Shen-Long's shoulder. Air version moves Shen-Long backwards. Glaive Thrust (11-22)-DP + Attack; Ground or air Shen-Long twirls its beam glaive, then performs a repeating strike. Light version hits three times, heavy hits six times. Air version lacks the twirl at the start. Super: Dragon Fang Fire (25)-Down, DF, forward, down, DF, forward + Attack; Ground or air Shen-Long fires a blast from its flamethrower. Hits the bottom half of the screen and pushes the opponent upwards. Does six hits. =============== Tallgeese (OZ-00MS) Pilot: Zechs Marquise Fighting: 100 Weapon: 110 Speed: 150 Power: 130 Armor: 120 Weapons: Dober Gun, Beam Sabre (2) Player's Notes: Zechs' Leo prototype is actually pretty powerful...makes you wonder why they didn't mass-produce it. In the game, Tallgeese is a sort of Akuma-style character. Specials: Dober Gun (3 per shot)-Down, DF, forwand + Attack; Ground or air Tallgeese pulls out its dober gun and fires. Ground version is horizontal, air version is diagonal downwards. Heavy version shoots five blasts, light shoots two. Vernier Slam (13)-DP + Attack; Ground or air Tallgeese uses its backpack vernier to perform a quick rushing shoulder butt. Both versions hit once. Body Slam (17-24)-Down, DB, back + Attack; Ground only Tallgeese charges froward, then grabs the enmey and performs a powerbomb. Counts as two hits. Super: Sabre Shockwave (29)-Down, DF, forward, down, DF, forward + Attack; Ground only Tallgeese pulls out its two beam sabres and slashes, creating a shockwave of energy. Hits the entire bottom screen (but can be super- jumped over). Does five hits. Notes: Tallgeese's size makes it take extra hits from projectiles. Combos: Standing LP, standing LP, standing LW, crouching HW, Vernier Slam =============== Vayate (OZ-13MSX1) Pilot: Lady Une (Designated Pilot: Trowa Barton) Fighting: 110 Weapon: 160 Speed: 125 Power: 110 Armor: 130 Weapon: Beam Cannon Player's Notes: As in the anime, Vayate is an all-out offense fighter. Although Trowa was the designated pilot, Bandai assigned Lady Une to the Vayate so that Trowa wouldn't be in two Mobile Suits at the same time (see Extras section). Specials: Cannon Blast (7-18)-Down, DF, forward + Attack; Ground or air Vayate fires an oblong blast from the beam cannon. Heavy version does two hits, light does one. Knee Attack (11-19)-DP + Attack; Ground only Vayate performs a rising knee attack. Heavy version does four hits, light does two. After the move is over, Vayate can perform an air attack as if it had jumped. Super: Hyper Cannon (25)-Down, DF, forward, down, DF, forward + Attack; Ground or air Vayate fires a large blast from its beam cannon. The beam looks like a cut-and-paste of Iron Man's Proton Cannon. Does six hits. =============== Mercurius (OZ-13MSX2) Pilot: Lucrezia Noin (Designated Pilot: Heero Yuy) Fighting: 150 Weapon: 100 Speed: 125 Power: 130 Armor: 130 Weapons: Crash Shield, Beam Gun, Planet Defensor (8) Player's Notes: Vayate's defensive counterpart, Mercuirus focuses more on hand-to-hand fighting than distance fighting. As with Vayate, Mercurius got a new pilot to keep the real pilot from appearing in another Suit (Heero's already pulling triple duty with Wing, Wing Zero, and occationally Epyon.) Specials: Shield Crash (14-24)-DP + Attack; Ground or air Mercurius flies forward with its crash shield on its chest. Heavy version does four hits, light does one. Defensor Shield (0)-Down, DB, back + Attack; Ground only Mercurius activates its planet defensor shield. While active, the shield make Mercurius immune to all attacks except for throws. Both versions cost no energy initally, but the shield drains energy constantly. Defensor Attack (7 per defensor)-Down, DF, forward + Attack; Ground only Mercurius throws the planet defensors at the enemy. This can only be used if Mercurius has its shield active (the previous move). Light throws the defensors in the primary directions; heavy version homes in on the enemy. Super: Defensor Thunder (30)-Down, DF, forward, down, DF, forward + Attack; Ground only Mercurius floats upwards and discharges electricity from the planet defensors. Does eight hits and carries the enemy upwards. =============== Wing Gundam Zero (XXXG-00W0) Pilot: Heero Yuy Fighting: 150 Weapon: 150 Speed: 160 Power: 140 Armor: 140 Weapons: Wing Vulcan Gun (2), Machine Cannon (2), Twin Buster Rifle, Beam Sabre (2) Player's Notes: Wing Zero! Heero's upgraded Gundam plays almost identically to Wing, with a few notable changes. Specials: Buster Blast (5 per shot)-Down, DF, forward + Attack, Ground or air Wing Zero pulls out its buster rifle and fires a few shots. Light version shoots two big blasts, heavy shoots four. Shield Uppercut (10-13)-DP + Attack; Ground or air Wing Zero perfors a rising uppercut attack with its shield. Light version hits twice, heavy hits four times. Angled Buster (6 per shot)-Down, DB, back + Attack; Ground or air Wing Zero shoots its buster rifle at an angle; ground version shoots upwards, air shoots downwards. For both, light version shoots two medium-sized blasts, heavy shoots four. Supers: Twin Buster (22)-Down, DF, forward, down, DF, forward + Attack; Ground only Wing Zero splits its buster rifle and fires four alternating blasts from each rifle. Does six hits. Neo-Bird Mode (37)-Down, DB, back, down, DB, back + Attack; Ground only Wing Zero leaps off-screen and enters Neo-Bird mode, flying across the screen three times. Each pass does up to three hits. Wing Zero is invincible during this move. Final Battle: Gundam Epyon =============== Well, you've fought your way through the five Gundams and the best OZ could throw at you. So what's next? You fight Treize Khushrenada's ultimate dueling suit, Epyon. Be prepared for one of the hardest fights ever! Epyon is a really tough opponent. He's fast, strong, and cheap. Keep in the air to avoid its knock-down attacks, and barrage it with projectiles (Heavyarms' missiles work well). If it charges, it's execute a quick heat rod combo and try to knock you down so it can do it again. Gundam Epyon (OZ-13MS) Pilot: Milliardo Peacecraft (Zechs Marquise unmasked) Fighting: 160 Weapon: 140 Speed: 160 Power: 150 Armor: 140 Weapons: Beam Sword, Heat Rod Player's Notes: Epyon is the super-unfair boss in the grand tradition of M. Bison, Apocalypse, and Orochi, altough it isn't undefeatable. Specials: Epyon Cruhser (14 per charge)-Down, DF, forward + Attack; Ground or air Epyon performs a Psycho Crusher-style flying body attack. The heavy version has an additional charge after the first, which can be redirected. Each charge does one hit. Forward Hop (0)-Down, DB, back + Attack; Ground only Epyon hops forward. It can perform any air attack while hopping. It works like an air dash, and counts as an overhead attack, so opponents must block high. Super: Energy Bomber (3 per ball, 21 if enemy touches shield)-Down, DF, forward, Down, DF, forward + Attack; Ground or air Epyon hovers in mid-air with an energy shield surrounding its body and fires twenty energy balls. The balls home in on the enemy and will almost always lead into a combo. The shield protects Epyon from physical attacks, but it can still be hit with projectiles. Notes: Epyon doesn't have vulcans, so it has punches at all ranges. =============== Codes/Extras Epyon Code Highlight Tallgeese and hit L, L, L, L, R, R, R, R, L, R, L, R, L, R, L, R, L, R. Note that these are the shoulder buttons, not left and right. This code only works in Versus and Trial modes. To get Eypon's alternate color, hold Start before doing the code. Deathscythe's Buster Shield Super? A friend of mine claims that he once did a buster shield supermove for Deathscythe. I haven't gotten this to work, but if it does, e- mail me and tell me about it. Characters: Heero Yuy: Wing and Wing Zero's pilot. An emotionless soldier, using the name of a slain diplomat as his codename. Heero tries to kill Relena in the beginning, but never does. Considered the ultimate pilot (pilots the widest variety of Suits in the series). Duo Maxwell: Deathscythe's pilot. Cheerful and happy-go-lucky, Duo becomes surprisingly grim when piloting Deathscythe, calling himself the God of Death. Dresses like a priest in honor of his adoptive family, a preist and nun who were slaughtered by OZ. Later gets an upgraded Deathscythe with a twin scythe, shield wings, and an invisibility/energy deflection device based off Mercurius's defensor system. Trowa Barton: Heavyarms' pilot. A morose young man with exceptional acrobatic skills. He almost constantly uses codenames, and has even forgotten his real name. Rumors suggest that he is actually the long-lost brother of fellow circus performer Catherine Bloom (she told him he was her brother while he had amnesia. Quatre Rabera Winner: Sandrock's pilot. Quatre comes from a rich family, but went against his father's wishes when he became a Gundam pilot. He is aided by the Maganac mercenaries. Builds Wing Zero when his father is killed by OZ. Chang Wufei: Shen-Long's pilot. A warrior who firmly believes in integriy and honor. A known loner, Wufei hates women and weak people. Calls his Gundams "Nataku" in honor of his slain wife. Later gets a new Shen-Long (Altron) with two dragon fangs, a beam trident, and a beam cannon based off Vayate's blaster. Zechs Marquise: Tallgeese and Epyon's pilot. An elite OZ pilot, he is the long-lost son of the Peacecraft family. While he loves duels, Zechs thinks wars are pointless unless they show how futile wars really are. Changes sides more often than Ross Perot. The manga implies that he is a Newtype (the psychics from Universal Century and X Gundam). Later pilots the third Tallgeese. Lady Une: Vayate's pilot. An OZ commander with split personalities. One is a cold, calculating soldier, the other is a compassionate woman who is in love with Treize. Lucrezia Noin: Mercurius' pilot. A piloting instructor, Noin joined the fighting after Wufei massacred her trainees the day after they graduated. Secretly loves Zechs, and treats her trainees like family members. Relena Darlain/Peacecraft: A girl whose lineage leads her to support total pacifism. She has a crush on Heero, and is the only one who can make him show emotins. Appears in the opening. Treize Khushrenada: OZ's leader, Treize is Zechs' lifelong friend. A traditionalist, Treize finds duels beautiful and hates Mobile Dolls. Builds Epyon, Tallgeese II and Tallgeese III. Appears in the Normal and Hard Difficulty endings. Pilot Adjustments: In Story Mode, some Suits will have different pilots depending upon who you chose. If you are Heero in Wing, Zechs will be in Wing Zero. Heero in Wing Zero fights Trowa in Wing, and Zechs in Tallgeese fights Heero in Epyon. Technically, Heero and Trowa should be in Mercurius and Vayate, but that wouldn't have worked. Note that if you continue and change Suits, the pilots remain, so Heero in Wing Zero can fight Heero in Epyon. @_@ Story: In the year A.C. 195, the outlying space colonies are being oppressed by the Earth Sphere Alliance. In retaliation, five colonies send Mobile Suits of incomparable power to Earth. Heero Yuy, pilot of the Wing Gundam, is intercepted by ace pilot Zechs Marquise, causing him to land off-course. After washing up on shore, he is seen by Relena Darlain, the daughter of a famous ambassador. To Relena's shock, Heero shows up at her shcool as a transfer student. When she invites him to her birthday party, he tears the invitation in half. Crying, she asks him why and he (in the show's most famous moment), walks by her, wipes a tear from her eye, and whispers, "I will kill you." Beliving his mission is a failure, Heero prepares to destroy Wing, which is at the bottom of the ocean. However, the Alliance is already there, trying to capture the Gundam. Then Duo Maxwell, pilot of the Gundam Deathscythe, destroy the Alliance forces and attempts to take Wing (he wants it for spare parts). Heero attempts to shoot Relena (who left her birthday party to find him), but Duo shoots him in the hand. Then Heero lurches forward and hits a button that launches torpedoes that sink Wing and Deathscythe. Heero is captured by the E.S.A. and put in a military hospital, but Duo comes to his rescue. Jumping out of the building, Heero survives a massive fall with only a broken leg (which he pops back into place, to Duo's disgust.) The two manage to do a fair amount of damage to the Alliance, all while a secret organization, OZ, is manipulating everything from the shadows. During a peaceful meeting of the Alliance, the delagates are attacked by Heero in Wing (who thinks the delegates' plane is full of OZ officers), killing all but one, who declares war on the colonies before OZ kills him. Trowa and Wufei try to assinate OZ Supreme Commander Treize Khushrenada, but Wufei gives up after losing to Treize in a swordfight and falls into a deep depression. Then, hearing of a shipment of new space Mobile Suits on two routes, the pilots split up; Quatre and Duo attack the land route, and Heero and Trowa attack the air route. The land route is a decoy, but Duo, Quatre and the Maganac soldiers fight off the Leos. On the air route, Zechs, in the prototype Mobile Suit Tallgeese, attacks Heero, just before the pilot self-destructs Wing Gundam. The pilots split up once again. Heero remains in a coma for a month, during which time OZ manages to completely overpower the Alliance. Led by Trieze, OZ tries to gain control of the world while pretending to want to unite the colonies and Earth. Secretly, Zechs had the remnants of Wing rebuilt, and got his friend, instructor Lucrezia Noin, to track down Heero (who was with Trowa, trying to atone for killing the Alliance leaders) and invite him to continue the duel in Antarctica. However, when they get there, Heero chooses to fight in Trowa's Hevayarms, and is getting beaten when Relena shows up. Her father was killed, but he revealed that she is actually one of the last surviving members of the Peacecraft family, who promoted non-violence. She tells Heero to kill Zechs, but Noin tells Relena that Zechs is her older brother, Milliardo. When a group of soldiers attacks the base, Heero and Trowa leave with the reconstructed Wing. Meanwhile, Quatre and Duo decide to return to space. While trying to steal some Mobile Suit transports, they get attacked, and, even when Wufei shows up in Shen-Long, the trio is losing. Quatre self- destructs Sandrock to distract the enemy while Duo and Wufei escape into space. However, Deathscythe is severly damaged while fighting the self-piloting Mobile Dolls, and Duo abandons it. Trowa, posing as an OZ soldier, destroyes Deathscythe. The five engineers who created the Gundams are captured, and OZ forces thm to build the Vayate and Mercurius. Heero gets captured when he tries to destroy the pseudo-Gundams, and Duo is caught while trying to destroy the Mobile Doll-making Lunar Base. Wufei, whose Shen-Long is runing out of fuel and ammunition, lets himself get captured. OZ assigns Trowa to pilot Vayate, and makes Heero pilot Mercurius. Meanwhile, the Gundam engineers are secretly rebuilding Deathscythe and Shen-Long. Suddenly, Quatre shows up in Wing Zero and blows up a colony. Trowa plans to steal the Vayate and Mercurius and, along with the new Deathscythe, Shen-Long, and Wing, destroy OZ. However, Quatre seems to have gone insane, and when Trowa and Heero confront him, he tries to shoot the Mercurius, only to have Trowa throw Vayate in the way, resulting in his apparent death. Heero manages to stop him, but Mercurius is destroyed as well. The two pilots abandon Wing Zero and return to Earth. Meanwhile, Tuberov, the creator of the Mobile Dolls, tries to kill Duo, Wufei, and the engineers but cutting off their oxygen supply. Lady Une intervienes and saves them, but gets shot by Tuberov. Duo and Wufei take their new Gundams, Deathscythe Hell and Altron and escape. On Earth, Relena and Noin have gone to the Sanc Kingdom, the home of the Peacecraft family, and are inviting those who wish to avoid the war to come to the country. The Romafeller Foundation, a group of aristocrats who controls OZ, sees Relena as a major problem and plans on destroying the Sanc Kingdom. The Foundation's leader sends his grand-daughter, Dorothy, to keep an eye on Relena. In the meantime, Heero and Quatre, who were trying to avoid the execution orders OZ placed on thier heads, are invited to the Sanc Kingdom by Noin. She tells them that the Kingdom was destroyed because they could not fight off the invaders, and that she has a hangar full of Taurus Suits, and Heero's abandoned Wing Gundam. Treize, who opposes Romafeller's plans, is stripped of his title and placed under a form of house arrest in Luxembourg. Trowa, who is suffering from amnesia, was found by one of his fellow circus performers (he joined the circus as a cover). In space, Wufei watches his home colony destroyed and starts fiercely beliveing in integrity (his sensei's last wish was that Wufei would keep his sense of integrity while fighting OZ). An OZ soldier starts experimenting with Wing Zero, discovering that it uses the Zero System, a piloting system that feeds data directly into the pilot's brain, providing speed-of-thought reactions, but it can lead to insanity. Duo fights Wing Zero in Deathscythe Hell, resulting in the soldier's death as Wing Zero is left to drift in space. Back on Earth, a group of OZ who supports Treize, calling themselves the Treize Faction, tries to rescue him from Luxembourg. Heero takes Wing there to try and kill Treize. When he gets there, he discovers Treize was waiting for him with a Gundam he built: Epyon. The evil Gundam has the Zero System as well, and Heero leaves Wing behind as he takes Epyon to the Sanc Kingdom. In space, Zechs finds Wing Zero and self-destructs Tallgeese, using Wing Zero to try and get the Gundam pilots to join him in destroying Romafeller. The Romafeller Foundation sends troops from space to attack the Sanc Kingdom, which is lightly defended since Quatre left to get the reconstructed Sandrock. Zechs fights the Romafeller forces in space, and persues them down to Earth, where he fights Heero in Epyon. They prove to be equally matched, and agree to stop fighting. When more Romafeller troops attack, Heero takes Wing Zero, saying that Treize probably wanted Zechs to have Epyon. The Sanc Kingdom falls, and Dorothy offers Relena the title of Romafeller's chief representative. Relena accepts, to save her home, and becomes Queen Relena. While seeming to support her belief in total pacifism, Romafeller plans on taking over the united "World Nation" through her. In Siberia, Zechs meets a mercenary who wants the colonies to be independant from Earth. He agrees to join their group, the White Fang. Heero and Quatre, realizing that their work is done, go back to space. The White Fang quickly takes or destroys what remains of OZ's space forces, taking the new battleship, Libra, for their flagship. Treize ousts Relena from her position and takes over as the World Nation's soverign, declaring war on the White Fang. The Gundam pilots are reunited on the space cruiser Peacemillion, owned by one of Duo's old friends. When the colony where Trowa's circus co-workers gets attacked, he borrows Wing Zero and saves them, regaining his memory in the process. Then, as a declaraction of war, the White Fang fires its massive beam cannon into Earth. Treize begins amassing the Earth's military forces for a final battle. White Fang builds new Mobile Dolls with a version of the Zero System installed, making them fight more like humans. They also make Mobile Doll versions of Mercurius and Vayate, which are quickly destroyed by Duo. As the final battle begins, Treize, piloting Tallgeese II, challenges Zechs to a duel. Zechs declines, saying that a mere duel will not determine a war, and fires Libra's cannon at Treize. Lady Une manages to push Treize out of the way with Wing Gundam, leading to the big battle. Earth's forces are quickly being destroyed when the five Gundams start fighting the White Fang's Virgo Suits. Wufei fights and kills Treize, ending what they began so long ago. Heero goes off to fight Zechs, and Peacemillion crashes into Libra, sending both ships toward Earth. Wing Zero and Epyon fight through the destroyed ship, ending when Zechs seemingly sacrifices himself to blow up Libra's engine, making the ship break up. However, a large chunk is still headed for Earth, sufficient to destroy the planet. Heero flies ahead of it and, despite Wing Zero's breaking apart, blows it up with a blast from its buster rifle. This is not the complete story, believe it or not. Cartoon Network picked up Gundam Wing on Monday, March 6, 2000, and as of September 23, was in its third run. The summary provided is an abridged version of the plot, that mentions only the most relevant details. CN pulled Wing from its line-up, replacing it with Tenchi Muyo! (another popular anime). In early 2001, CN announced that Wing would return in March, only to be aired once before being removed when CN cut Toonami dwn from three hours to two. Endless Waltz, the three- part OVA sequel to Wing, was first aired on Novenmber 10, 2000 and has had several subsequent reruns in Toonami's In-Flight Movies (this author was one of the many who got an advance screening of the uncut version at Anime Weekend Atlanta; he was the jerk who yelled "Heero sucks! Go Duo!"). Recently, CN announced that the original Gundam and the 1996 sequel/sidestory 08th MS Team, would begin airing in summer, 2001. Other Wing Stories Endless Waltz: Three OVA episodes, later combined into a movie with 10 minutes of additional footage. Tells the story of a revolution started exactly one year after GW ends, headed by the daughter of Treize and the creator of Operation Meteor. Features New designs of the Gundams by Hajime Katoki (who designed all the OZ MS). Ground Zero: 3-issue manga, with 1-issue unrelated story. When Wing Zero is stolen, Heero goes to an abandoned colony to retrieve it, only to find that apparently, the same happened to the other pilots' Gundams, and Duo's gone insane. The story explains why the pilots decided to destroy their Gundams in Endless Waltz, and implies that the Katoki redesigns were custom modifications to the Gundams made by the pilots. The fourth manga, "In-Rose," has nothing to do with the rest of the story and is simply the happy ending for Heero and Relena that most romantics wanted, but Relena-haters and yaoi-fans despised. Blind Target: 4-issue sidestory manga. A weapons contractor manipulates some soldiers from the White Fang into starting another war, and the pilots teams up to avert the crisis. This manga details why Wufei joins the Barton/Mariemaia army in EW. Episode Zero: 7-issue manga. This manga details what happened to the major characters (the pilots and Relena) before the series began, explaining certain mysteries like why Duo dresses like a priest, and how Wufei started calling his Gundams "Nataku." These aren't official, but they explain an awful lot about the characters. Note that many people mistake a minor character in Trowa's story, a girl named Middie Une, for the same Lady Une from the series; this is impossible, because Middie's too young. Battlefield of Pacifist: ??-issue manga. An extremist group advocates the destruction of all MS as the source of conflicts, but this is just a front for their own schemes. This manga features the upgraded Virgo-III and Scorpio, also seen in SD G-Generation. G-Unit: 3-volume manga series. An alternate universe version of Wing (already an alternate universe in itself), this story focuses on the effort of two brothers who try to defend the asteroid MO-V from the attacks of OZ. The Hydra Gundam from G-Unit shows up in Battle Assault/Battle Master 2. Miscellanious Facts: -Sword-fighting seems to be the interplanetary pasttime in the After Colony Universe. Of all the major characters, Heero, Quatre, Wufei, Zechs, Treize, Dorothy, and even Relena's butler have been shown fencing. Heero destroys two fencing masks in the show (a male classmate's and Dorothy's). -The manga plot differed a bit from the anime version. While Heero is bed-ridden, Quatre gets the other pilots to come to the Sanc Kingdom, encountering Zechs along the way. The Gundams have a last stand in the Kingdom (with Sandorck in an armored cape and Heavyarms sporting a cannon backpack) when Relena surrenders. Heero goes to kill her, but Zechs intervenes, at which point they exchange Zero and Epyon. The comedy moments include Duo suggesting whacking Trowa in the head to restore his memory, and Dorothy giving flowers to Heero (to Quatre's surprise). -In the manga, there were a series of cross-overs between Wing and G- Gundam, the martial arts parody. Notable moments include Duo leaving the depressing Wing universe and living happily in the G-Universe (he is shown walking around with Allenby and Rain, singing the theme song); the entire male cast of G having a crush on Relena (including Master Asia, the villain), and Heero's happy-go-evil attitude. -The song played in the opening is Rhythm Emotion, Wing's second theme song. You can find it on the Net, or listen to it during the series, notably in Episode 41, Crossfire at Barge. -The entire series makes puns on numbers; several character's names are numbers in various languages (Une/one, Duo/two, Treize/three, Quatre/four, Quinte/five, Zechs/six, Noin/nine, and Milliardo/billion). Closing and Acknowledgements -To Kao Megura, whose FAQs for Street Fighter and King of Fighters have been endlessly useful for both the games and inspiration. -To Shadow Duo, who told me about the Buster Shield super. -To Bandai/Sunrise/TV Asahi for producing one of the coolest mecha animes I've seen, short of Eva. -To my family, for not pestering me -too- much during the wiritng process. -To Yoshiyuki Tomino, for first creating the wonder that is Gundam in the first place.
