The controls themselves remain the same, though. - D-Pad: Move marker - 1 Button: Cancel choices; go to previous screen/step - 2 Button: Confirm choices; continue to next screen/step - Pause/Start: Pause game at times ----------------- Modes of the Game ----------------- There are three modes in which you can play. In consecutive order: - Tournament, a series of matches across several holes of golf with up to, I believe, four players. - Match Play, a mode based on winning holes. Whoever who actually "wins" more holes will be the overall winner of the match - number of shots will only count during the hole itself. - Training, which is practice golf, basically. -------------------- Generalized Gameplay -------------------- As you prepare to play the game, you will choose a mode, as above; the number of players as applicable; a set of initials to identify each player; then the game begins. Firstly, we'll cover golf club stats. These are slightly adjusted from the stats in the game from actual experience when playing. O---------------------------O---------------------O-----------------------O | Golf Club Names | Approximate Range | Approximate Minimum | | | on Grass Turf | Distance on Grass | O---------------------------O---------------------O-----------------------O | 1W (One Wood or Driver) | 278 yards | 170 yards | | 2W (Two Wood) | 244 yards | 140 yards | | 3W (Three Wood) | 222 yards | 140 yards | | 4W (Four Wood) | 200 yards | 130 yards | O---------------------------O---------------------O-----------------------O | 1I (One Iron) | 211 yards | 110 yards | | 2I (Two Iron) | 200 yards | 105 yards | | 3I (Three Iron) | 189 yards | 90 yards | | 4I (Four Iron) | 178 yards | 75 yards | | 5I (Five Iron) | 167 yards | 70 yards | | 6I (Six Iron) | 156 yards | 60 yards | | 7I (Seven Iron) | 145 yards | 50 yards | | 8I (Eight Iron) | 134 yards | 35 yards | | 9I (Nine Iron) | 123 yards | 25 yards | O---------------------------O---------------------O-----------------------O | PW (Pitching Wedge) | 112 yards | 15 yards | | SW (Sand/Bunker Wedge) | 101 yards | 15 yards | | PT (Putter) | 20 yards | 1 yard | O---------------------------O---------------------O-----------------------O When you begin a hole, you will obtain various information on the hole. This will include wind speed and direction, par (base level of shots), distance to the hole in yards (1 yard is a little under 1 meter), shot number, player number, and a few other things. Press Up/Down on the D-Pad to choose one of your clubs. Press "2" to confirm. Next, you'll see a "+" mark on the screen. Use the D-Pad to maneuver it and choose your straight-line trajectory; that is to say, choose the direction in which to aim prior to wind and the like taking effect. Press "2" again and you'll confirm this. On the right, a "+" will appear on the golf ball. Depending on where you press "2" to confirm this, you'll give a number of effects to the ball: - Higher up, to induce topspin, making the ball go farther - Lower down, to induce backspin, making the ball stop easier or roll backward - To the left, to make the ball go to the right - To the right, to make the ball go left - Dead center, to make the ball go straight and normal Press "2" to confirm your setting, then the blue meter below the ball will fill up with red. The more red in the bar will affect the power of the shot - more red, more power, more distance. Press "2" to confirm and shoot the ball. This cycle will repeat for a bit until you reach the green near the hole. It gets a bit more specialized there ... slightly. It is just you being limited to the putter, and that's the only thing worth noting on putting in this game. There are usually nine or eighteen holes played throughout the course of a match, and in a way similar to this. --------------- Scoring Details --------------- Each given hole will have a set "par" on it. The par is the number of shots it ideally takes to finish a hole. If you go under this, you earn points (your score is negative, but that's good), and if you go over, you lose points (you gain positive points). Hitting exactly par neither hurts or helps you. The number of shots you take can also be affected by two other things - water hazards and out-of-bounds area. Both are considered out-of-bounds. This bad shot will count against you, and you'll be penalized an additional shot. For example, if you hit the water on your first shot, consider the next shot you take your third and not the second. At the end of the hole, the number of shots you take, minus the par, is your score. If such is positive, you went over (bogey); if negative, you did good by going under (birdie, eagle, albatross). And, of course, par is neither good or bad. In Match Play, your record is based on the number of "wins" per hole. If you have the best score of the participants, that is one win and there's nothing else to it. This can mean that someone did three shots better than you, but you still won more holes overall and are still the winner. To the curious, the relatively official names for various shots: O----------------O-----------------O | Name of Shot | Score Changes | O----------------O-----------------O | Hole-in-One | (Par) - 1 | | Albatross | -3 | | Eagle | -2 | | Birdie | -1 | | Par | ±0 | | Bogey | +1 | | Double Bogey | +2 | | Triple Bogey | +3 | O----------------O-----------------O O=============================================================================O | This is the end of KeyBlade999's | | FAQ for the Sega Master System game | | Great Golf (Japan). | O=============================================================================O ________________ | ____________ | | | | | | | | | | |____________| |________________________________________ | |____________| |_________________________ | | | | | | |\ /\ /| | | | | | | | \ / \ / | | | |____________| | | | (_) (_) | | |________________| |_| |_| ___ ___ ___ /'__`\ /'__`\ /'__`\ /\ \_\ \ /\ \_\ \ /\ \_\ \ \ \___, \ \ \___, \ \ \___, \ \/__,/\ \ \/__,/\ \ \/__,/\ \ \ \_\ \ \_\ \ \_\ \/_/ \/_/ \/_/ KeyBlade999
