This game was, I believe, originally made for the arcade in 1984 and then reprogrammed for the SG-1000 in 1985 by Sega. Prior to writing this FAQ, I had no knowledge of this game. Furthermore, no instruction booklet was available to me for the writing of this document. So I guess that we’ll discover how this game works together. As such, objects and other characteristics will be identified as they appear on the screen. On to the game… GP World is a basic Formula 1 racing game which is a single player experience. Racing enthusiasts will, however, be disappointed when they realize (like I did) that this game only involves qualifying sessions on a variety of tracks. There is no intro. Pressing the START (1) button brings you straight to the game. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 2- Beginning the Game =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The opening screen immediately requires you to select from four different options: - Level 1 - Level 2 - Level 3 - Edit As far as I can determine, Levels 1 to 3 are degrees of difficulty, with 1 being for beginners and 3 for experts. The difference seems to be the number of opposing yellow cars on the track. Selecting any level brings you directly to the first qualification session, in this case Canada. Edit permits the player to design his own track. We’ll get to this feature in another section. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3- Display =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The qualification display is divided into four sections. The top-most section displays, from left to right: - TOP: Top is the equivalent of the HIGH SCORE feature and indicates the top score attained during your playing session. This is obviously reset to 0 when the game is turned off. - QUAL.: This is the qualifying time required for the track. The qualifying time obtained is based on two laps around the track. If you match the time, or record a lower one, you get to go onto the next qualification session. Otherwise, you get a TIME UP message and the game is over. - SCORE: As indicated, it is the player’s score while racing around the track. Points are acquired by covering distance. The score increases by increments of 20. The faster the car goes, the faster the score increases. Also, each car you pass during the session is worth 100 points if you move on to the next session. The center section displays the racing field. Here you’ll be able to admire the amazing décor and pastel color scheme while you race around the track. Your car is red and you can only see its front wheels, as it doesn’t at all “move” from its central position at the bottom of the section. Those are some pretty static pixels right there. It kind of reminds me of one of those hand- held Tiger games, where the background was on a loop. All opposing racers drive yellow cars. The bottom-left section of the screen is occupied by your car’s dashboard. All of those little dials are useless, even for decorative purposes. The useful features are: - Gear switch: This is located to the extreme left of the section. There is a choice of high or low. The low gear tops out at 150 km/h. To go faster, you need to flip into high gear. Following a crash or a stoppage of any kind, you need to go back in low gear to build up your speed anew. - RPM Indicator: Kind of looking like an upside down swoosh, this series of black and red squares represents the progression of the car engine’s revolutions per minute (RPM). This is another indicator for passing from low to high gear. When all of the black squares are full, it is time to shift up. When the red squares start to fill up while the car is in high gear, you’re approaching maximum speed. - SPEED: This is the speedometer and indicates your speed in kilometers per hour (km/h). The maximum speed appears to be 300 km/h. - TIME: Time is the chronometer which keeps track of your elapsed time to go around the track. The time is indicated in seconds. The right-most section of the display shows three things: - A representation of the track you are racing on. The track itself is a pale yellow. The blue section of track indicates your car’s position on the track. The “SG” notation is the START/GOAL line, thus the start/finish line. I have done my best to reproduce the tracks in this FAQ. However, in an effort to show their configuration as best as possible, I did not respect any particular scale. Which is why some look much bigger than others, but aren’t. - The name of the track you are racing on. - The record qualifying time for the track. If you manage to beat this time, the new time will be shown. However, just as with the TOP score, it will be reset with the end of the playing session. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 4- Controls =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The controls in this game are as follows: DIRECTION PAD: Pressing UP shifts to low gear. Pressing DOWN shifts to high gear. Pressing LEFT or RIGHT “turns” the car in that direction. Turn is in quotation marks because the graphics for the car never change, thus taking away a significant feel for the track. 1 BUTTON: Pressing the 1 button starts the game and, in menus, activates a choice. During a qualifying session, pressing the 1 button accelerates the car. 2 BUTTON: The 2 button appears to only have a use during a qualifying session. In this case, it serves as the brake. I hardly used the brake, preferring, instead, to let up on the accelerator when going into a curve or passing an opponent. The brake is, however, quite useful in tight turns, such as hairpins. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 5- Hazards =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= As with any racing game, GP World features a number of hazards that will either slow your progress throughout the race or outright cause your car to explode. Most of the hazards are off-track. So staying on the hard top is a priority. Signs: Those black and white signs on the side of the track will provoke your car’s explosion if you hit one. Opposing cars: The numerous yellow opposing cars which you will encounter on the track can also cause your car to explode. Those cars, however, will continue without a scratch, not even slowing down, as if nothing had happened. Hmmm, I’m tempted to say “Unfair AI advantage!”, but you’re really racing against time, not the other cars. Also, just to complicate things, the opposing cars will move left and right on the track. Oddly enough, they do not seem to follow the racing line, which is the most efficient trajectory around the track. Usually, if you come upon a yellow car that is on the left side of the track, it will gradually drift to the right side. And vice versa. So, be prepared for this when overtaking an opponent. A technique that works well is to close in on the yellow car and then, as you are about to make contact, let up on the accelerator just a little in order to let the opposing car drift out of your way before you push through the opening. Trees: Trees that do not look much taller than a bush or hedge can also detonate your car. Off-track: Surprisingly, going off the track does not immediately cause the car to implode. It does, however, reduce its rate of acceleration, thus using up important seconds. As you can see, coming into contact with just about anything will cause your car to go up in a mushroom cloud. It’s a good thing there aren’t any mosquitoes in this game. Maybe I should call this section “50 ways to pulverize your ride”. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 6- Tracks =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 6.1- Canada =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Time of day: Daytime Weather: Clear Qualifying time required: 105.0 sec. There are some variations in the time of day (dusk instead of daytime for Canada). However, the qualifying time remains the same. The record for the track, on the other hand, will change according to how well you performed the first time around. Your score will also carry over and keep increasing. Now, I did not replay the tracks to verify that they are still in the same order the second, third or more times around. I presume, though, that they are. Also, I deduce that from here on in, you continue until you fail at achieving qualification for a track. ============================================================================= 7- Edit Mode ============================================================================= ============================================================================= 7.1- Display ============================================================================= Selecting the EDIT mode takes you to a screen that is divided into two sections. The left part of the screen shows three short segments of track in yellow. They are a straight section and two turn sections – one curving to the left and the other curving to the right. The CLR and END functions serve to either CLEAR the assembled segments from the grid or to END the building process in order to test the track. Selecting END first brings up a confirmation for a YES (test the track) or NO (return to EDIT mode). A red arrow is moved around by the D-PAD in order to make your selections. The right part of the screen shows an 8 x 20 vertical grid. This grid is where the selected segments will be placed. A small portion of the track is already fixed in place and cannot be altered. It includes the START/GOAL point and a short section of track. These take up 10 squares out of a possible 160, thus leaving 150 for your creativity. This track is, by default, located in Japan. ============================================================================= 7.2- Building the track ============================================================================= As stated above, using the red arrow is your main tool for building the track. As an example, select CLR (use button 1) and then move the active square (little red square on the grid) to the space right below the fixed segments, the straight part of the track. Press button 2. Since there is no segment to erase, nothing happens. If there were a segment, pressing button 2 would erase it. Bring the active square to the last occupied space (even the fixed part) and press 1 to return to the segment selection screen. Next, when you select a segment and press 1, it will be set in the next empty square. Also, when as you progress in your selections, the EDIT mode will display different types of curved or straight segments, depending on how the track is developing. As a whole, the EDIT mode is kind of wonky and requires getting used to. Personally, I would have employed the SELECT button to facilitate alternating between the segment selection portion and the grid. In the end, you need to assemble enough segments to make a closed circuit. If you test an unclosed circuit, your car crashes. Otherwise, if the track passes the test, you are permitted to then race upon it. ============================================================================= 7.3- Racing the track ============================================================================= To begin, you have the option of choosing a level. The time of day appears to be randomly generated. Also, both the qualifying time and record time are set at 999.9 seconds. As such, you should not have any trouble making the cut. Otherwise, everything else is as a regular race. There are even some yellow cars to harass you. Once the pair of laps are completed, you are asked whether you wish to try the track again or not. If you try it again, there is a confirmation about altering it and then a question about changing the level. Obviously, the record time has changed to reflect your earlier performance. If you decide not to try the track again, the intro screen pops up. ============================================================================= 8- Codes and Cheats ============================================================================= There are no cheats or codes that I know of which are available for this game. ============================================================================= 9- Frequently asked questions ============================================================================= This section will be developed as readers send in some feedback and need more information on specific aspects of the game. ============================================================================= 10- Version history ============================================================================= Version 0.5 - Started FAQ/Walkthrough on January 17, 2018.
