It was released in Japan in 1984. Prior to writing this FAQ, I had no knowledge of this game. I did go online to find an instruction booklet for the cartridge. However, the game manual is entirely in Japanese. My grasp of Japanese being little to non-existent, I concentrated on getting the gist of it by looking at the images. The game involves a mouse, presumably named Chumy, which must gather certain items to complete various levels. Obviously, there are enemies and obstacles which make the gathering of these items a challenge. On to the game… At the intro screen, you are immediately treated to a bit of a demo. This demo pretty much shows you the layout of Level 1 and the different enemies that you’ll face throughout the game. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 2.0- Display =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The screen is divided into two sections. The top portion has two lines which contain the following information: - S: This is the score for either the last game played or the one in progress. - H: This is the high score for this session of play. Restarting the game resets this score to 0. - RAT: This number reflects the number of lives you have. Needless to say, when it is at 0, you are on your last life. I am surprised that they labeled this statistic “RAT”. I mean, there is room to spell out “CHUMY”. An extra rat is awarded at 35,000 points. - COMPILE: The name of the game developer. Blatant self-promotion. - Clock: The time left to complete the level. You have 90 seconds to complete each level. If the clock runs down to 0:00, a rat life will be lost. Each second remaining on the clock at the end of the level is worth 100 bonus points. - LEVEL: The level you are playing. The bottom portion of the screen is where all the action occurs. This area is divided into two sections. The above ground section depicts platforms and stairways which must be navigated through to gather the items. Keep in mind that walking off the screen in this section loops you to the other side of the screen. Enemies can also do this. Be wary when going off-screen since enemies tend to spawn at the edges. The bottom section shows a portion of sewer from which you begin and end the level. Notice the junk that floats in the water (a nice touch for that gaming era). That mouse hole in the bottom-left is your base. Entering and exiting the sewer can be tricky. Notice that the sewer ladders can be blocked by red manhole covers which move on their own in a random manner. A quick way down to the sewer is to use the pipe located at the top-right. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3.0- Basics =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ============================================================================= 3.1- Controls ============================================================================= Since I ran the game on an emulator, I’ve no information for the SG-1000 control buttons. Instead, I used a PC gamepad. The gamepad configuration was as follows: DIRECTION PAD: During game play, pressing LEFT or RIGHT moves your rat in that direction. Pressing UP or DOWN lets you use ladders and stairs. Also, pressing LEFT or RIGHT while jumping makes Chumy hop in that direction. SELECT: Not used. START: Pauses and unpauses the game. X BUTTON: Starts the game at the intro screen. In the game, this button is used to throw what looks like a burst of flame that arcs to the ground. This is your basic attack and cannot reach bats. Once an item is in your possession, your attack is somewhat enhanced with a higher arc and farther range. A BUTTON: Starts the game at the intro screen. In the game, it makes the rat jump. Combine it with the D-PAD to jump left or right. ============================================================================= 3.2- Weapons and Pick-ups ============================================================================= As far as I can tell, Chumy only has one weapon. Pick-ups include all the items that must be gathered throughout the various levels. Flame: This is your weapon. Use it to eliminate enemies. Some enemies require multiple hits. Others are immune to your attacks, which only slow them down. Your regular attack has a low arc and short range. Once you’ve picked up an item, this attack will have a higher arc and farther range. Pick-ups: These are the items you must gather throughout the levels. There are different items for different levels. Each item is worth 50 points. Carrying an item turns your rat a reddish color and slows it down. The more items you carry, the slower Chumy moves. As a measure of compensation, your attack has a further range. One thing I’ve noticed is that carrying items does not seem to affect your jumping abilities. So when you are hauling more than four items, it is quicker to hop around that to walk. There does not appear to be a limit to the number of items you can carry at one time (I managed up to 11 items before thinking Chumy might actually collapse from the effort). However, if you wish to empty Chumy’s pockets (or whatever it is he’s got), you can go to the mouse-hole and drop the items within, thereby restoring your full speed. ============================================================================= 3.3- Enemies ============================================================================= There are several types of enemies in the game, most of which can be defeated with your fire attack. These enemies are practically just outlines, but can still be distinguished. Contact with any enemy results in a lost life. Note that enemies respawn within seconds, so clearing them from a level is not an option. Bat: (10 pts) These critters are black. Bats are airborne and usually fly over Chumy. They can be defeated with one hit. Bats are the only enemies which increase in number as the levels progress. Before the loop, a bat is added every two levels and on different floors. As such, levels 1 and 2 have a bat on the 4th floor. Levels 3 and 4 have bats on the 3rd and 4th floors. Levels 5 and 6 have bats on floors 2 through 4. Finally, levels 7 and 8 have bats on every floor. Once you’ve looped back to level 1 (Level 9 in the game), you begin with bats on every floor. Robosaurus: (0 pts) These enemies look like mechanical dinosaurs and walk in a stilted manner. Robosaurus are white and seem impervious to Chumy’s attack. Shooting them will, however, slow them down somewhat. In my opinion, it’s not worth the trouble. Since they are slow, just find a way around them. Robosaurus will travel between floors and even go down to the sewer. Alligator: (10 pts) Alligators are of a greenish hue. They are lazy and regularly just doze in one particular spot. You can tell that an alligator is asleep by the tiny bubbles floating above its head. If a gator decides to move about, it is a relatively slow process. Can be defeated with one hit. Cats: (10 pts) Cats are yellow and their wagging tail gives them away. They can be tricky, since they are able to hop about. Can be defeated with one hit. Ninjas: (50 pts) These guys are portrayed more like astronauts in the game manual, but actually look like white ninjas during game play. Ninjas carry katanas (which they unfortunately do not use) on their back and take three hits to die. Each hit changes their color (1 = grey, 2 = purple, 3 = green). This enemy also travels between floors, usually 3 and 4. ============================================================================= 3.4- Hazards ============================================================================= The hazards in this game are quickly summed up. The first thing is that the game does not provide a life meter or hit points. Therefore, contact with any enemy means instant death. The second hazard involves getting stuck on a ladder at the sewer level while the manhole cover is in place, thus being vulnerable to an approaching enemy. Enemies do not regularly venture in the sewer, but it can happen. It is also possible to exit the pipe and encounter an enemy. Remember that you need to push down to exit the pipe. So if an enemy is present, patiently wait it out within the pipe. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 4.0- Walkthrough =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= My plan is to get you through these levels as quickly and efficiently as possible. I don’t think this game has any side quests or whatnot, but I am not worrying about getting them done. Onto the walkthrough. ============================================================================= 4.1- Level 1 ============================================================================= Items to gather: Apples (5) Time: 90:00 seconds Platforms: White and green Enemies: Bat (1), Alligator (1), Cat (1), Ninja (1), Robosaurus (1) Quickly go up the ladder to the right of the mouse-hole. Ignore the first floor and wait for the cat to move away before using the stairway immediately above. Go right and grab the first apple and fry the cat, if necessary. Continue right to grab the second apple and climb a stairway which is not blocked by the alligator. BBQ the alligator before travelling left to pick up two more apples. Go up a stairway to the far left and reach the top floor. Move right to grab the last apple. You will most likely encounter both the bat and the ninja. Burn them out of your path and continue right to enter the pipe. You must press DOWN to exit the pipe. Simply walk left to the mouse- hole and complete the level. ============================================================================= 4.2- Level 2 ============================================================================= Items to gather: Ice cream sundaes? (6) Time: 90:00 seconds Platforms: Red and black Enemies: Bats (2), Alligator (1), Cat (1), Ninja (1), Robosaurus (1) Now that you’ve an idea how to proceed through a level, I will not detail how to move about the following levels. I will simply describe the path I took to gather all the items. However, if there is a particular situation, I will describe it. Start with floor 2, grabbing both sundaes, before back-tracking to move up to floor 3 to get the sundae on the left before moving right. Backtrack again to the middle of floor 3 to go up to floor 4. Gather the left and then right sundae and keep going right to use the pipe. ============================================================================= 4.3- Level 3 ============================================================================= Items to gather: Green cups? (7) Time: 90:00 seconds Platforms: White and blue Enemies: Bats (2), Alligator (1), Cat (1), Ninja (1), Robosaurus (1) Access floor 2 and get the two cups as you move left. Use the left stairway to get to floor 3. Move right to grab the three cups in that direction. Backtrack to the far left stairway to climb to floor 4. Get the two remaining cups as you go right and continue to the pipe. ============================================================================= 4.4- Level 4 ============================================================================= Items to gather: Burgers (8) Time: 90:00 seconds Platforms: Red and yellow Enemies: Bats (2), Alligator (1), Cat (1), Ninja (1), Robosaurus (1) Access floor 2 and get the burger on the left. Immediately go up to floor 3 to grab the two burgers on the left. I suggest going to the mouse-hole to drop your burden, since more than 5 burgers will make the rat very slow (maybe the grease is clogging its arteries). Return to floor 2 to get the burger on the right side. Go up to floor 3 to get the two burgers on the right side. Continue up to floor 4 to get the last two burgers. Go right to access the pipe. ============================================================================= 4.5- Level 5 ============================================================================= Items to gather: Candies (9) Time: 90:00 seconds Platforms: Green and white Enemies: Bats (3), Alligator (1), Cat (1), Ninja (1), Robosaurus (1) Access floor 1 and go left to reach the right side of the floor, this due to the presence of the Robosaurus. Access floor 2 and go right, picking up all three candies, by going off screen. Return to the mouse-hole to deposit the candies. Access floor 3 and collect the three candies in this area by going from right to left. Get to floor 4 and gather the three remaining candies by going from left to right. Reach the pipe and end this level. ============================================================================= 4.6- Level 6 ============================================================================= Items to gather: Watermelon wedges (10) Time: 90:00 seconds Platforms: Red and white Enemies: Bats (3), Alligator (1), Cat (1), Ninja (1), Robosaurus (1) Access floor 2 and, as with previous levels, clear this floor and return to the mouse-hole. Clear floors 3 and 4 before using the pipe to return to the sewer. ============================================================================= 4.7- Level 7 ============================================================================= Items to gather: Cupcakes (11) Time: 90:00 seconds Platforms: White and red Enemies: Bats (3), Alligator (1), Cat (1), Ninja (1), Robosaurus (1) In this level, clear floors 2 and 3 and return to the mouse-hole before taking on floor 4. Ride the pipe home. ============================================================================= 4.8– Level 8 ============================================================================= Items to gather: Sundaes (12) Time: 90:00 seconds Platforms: Green and yellow Enemies: Bats (4), Alligator (1), Cat (1), Ninja (1), Robosaurus (1) This place is starting to get crowded with items. Also, the enemies are now actively homing in on your location. I suggest dividing the level in three groupings of sundaes. Either clear by floor or divide the 2nd and 3rd floors in a left and right section. Finish with the top floor and a ride through the pipe. ============================================================================= 4.9– Level 9 (loop) ============================================================================= Items to gather: Apples (5) Time: 90:00 seconds Platforms: Green and yellow Enemies: Bats (4), Alligator (1), Cat (1), Ninja (1), Robosaurus (1) This level is a loop back to Level 1. The only obvious difference is that there are four bats right from the get-go. Otherwise, the enemies appear a little quicker and display slightly better AI in their aggressiveness in thwarting your progress. I actually played through to level 14 to see if I could get a second extra rat. Since there was one at 35,000 points, I was convinced that there would also be one at 70,000 points. But that didn’t happen. Now, wrap your mind around this. I completed 13 levels and racked up 71,000 points. This gives me an average of about 5,461 points per level. The scoring meter in this game goes to seven digits for a possible 9,999,999 points. So, basically 10 million points. At the aforementioned pace, I would need to complete 1,831 levels to max out the scoring meter. Yeah. I put that controller down, gently. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 5.0- Codes and cheats =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Upon the writing of this FAQ, I was not aware of any cheats or codes for this game. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 6.0- Frequently asked questions =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= This section will be developed as readers send in some feedback and need more information on specific aspects of the game. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 7.0- Version history =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Version 0.5 - Started FAQ/Walkthrough on August 28, 2018.
