INTRODUCTION G0100 =============================================================================== Welcome to 'Safari Hunting' for the SG-1000, released by Sega in 1983. This game has nothing to do with the SMS title "Safari Hunt" in case you were wondering, I have seen it mistaken many times. Suggestions, comments or errors - email me about it. Enjoy! =============================================================================== 02.) BASICS G0200 =============================================================================== Goal: ````` The aim of the game is to hunt animals. As you hunt down enough you progress to the next round. This will be explained in more detail in the next section. Controls: ````````` D-Pad to walk around and drive. A/B button to shoot. START to pause the game and resume it later. Display: ```````` Here is the map of the level, it is always the same for every round: ____ ________ ____________ | | |____ __| |____ | | |__ || | ______| | ___ | || ____ || __ | | || ____| | | | | | | ____| || | | |__| || |____| || | | __ || _ | | | |___||__ ____| |__ __| | |__________| |_________| |_____| The top row has several numbers which represent the current high-score, round and your number of lives left. The current score is displayed within the jungle maze itself, near the top right corner. Moving: ``````` To exit and enter the vehicle you need to be at the gaps in the jungle but you drive there automatically unless you shoot while in the car. You can only drive counter-clockwise. When you go around the corner the vehicle will suddenly stick out a lot into the new direction. Keep this in mind when an animal has stopped on the track. When you exit the vehicle you can walk around in the jungle in all four directions, including the road. To get back into the jeep simply walk into it from any direction. Fuel: ````` You start out with 30 units of fuel. This number decreases over time, as you seem to leave the jeep running. When you run out of fuel then you cannot operate the vehicle anymore, not even exit it. The animals will also hunt you down while you are stuck in your seat. One is supposed to get refueled with each 50 points but it does not work. This seems the biggest flaw/glitch in the game, something the developers overlooked before the release. A Hunter's Life: ```````````````` You start the game with 5 lives. Touching an animal is instant death. They also kill you as you attempt to drive them over (if not paralyzed), so do not think you are in the clear. You can, however, still shoot while in the car and it will also stop the vehicle in the process. =============================================================================== 03.) HUNTING G0300 =============================================================================== .---------------------------------. | Animal | Shots | Points | |------------+---------+----------| | Snake | 2 | 20 | | Monkey | 3 | 30 | | Lion | 4 | 40 | | Elephant | 5 | 50 | '---------------------------------' It sometimes seems like you need more shots than the chart says, but it is more likely because it was not a direct hit. Hits are often not recognized at all when an animal is still semi-hidden in the bushes. Other times you also do not shoot, it seems that when you are standing too close with your back to a jungle wall. I can not confirm this as it seems pretty random. There is only one kind of animal on the screen at one time, even when one is paralyzed. The only way to get a new animal to appear is if the previous one disappears into the jungle or gets collected by the jeep. Each animal is worth between 20 and 50 points. To collect them, simply walk over them and the drag them to the road. You cannot drag them along the road and instead need to drive over them with your vehicle. Watch out as the animals only lie around for 30 seconds and afterwards they will seek you out like mad and attempt to kill you. At that point there is no way to paralyze them again and you are as good as dead already. The Sweep: ---------- To progress to the next round you need to gather 400 points in what I call a "sweep". The game might mislead you by thinking that your total score must be 400 more points in the current stage, but you actually have to score 400 points by having shot each of the four types of animal without collecting their bodies yet. If you pick any of them up you have to re-hunt it and by that time their countdown has probably reached 0 and they will be after you. It is extremely hard to achieve this but still possible with some luck, good shooting and a lot of experience with the game mechanics. Tips and Additional Info: ````````````````````````` *The best tactic I found is to stay on the outside of the jungle maze - on the road circling it. The shots are more clear and you can walk over the paralyzed enemies without dragging them with you. If you are aiming for a sweep without cheating, this is best way in my opinion. *Animals pop their head out of the bushes first, they will always come out in a second. The question is which direction they will go. They do not come back out where they disappeared into after taking a stroll, so do not bother to wait around at that spot. *Dragging an animal is really slow, check if the line to your jeep is free if you intend to carry it there, else do not walk over it if you plan to make a sweep. *Animals will try to rush for the nearest bush if they get shot at, you need to have a clear line either in front or from behind to take it down, especially for those toughies like the elephants. *If a monkey gets to your car unattended it will release all the animals, but you still keep the points. Not sure what the point is but a neat touch by the developers. Monkeys really take your vehicle apart if you have ever been on a real safari... *You rifle works in one of those one-shot-on-screen-at-one-time mechanisms that was very popular in the early days of videogames. This translates to: when you shoot your rifle is jammed until the bullet has disappeared from the screen, either hitting jungle, leaving the area or hitting the target (animal). What does this all mean? The closer you are, the easier it is to kill the animal. If you shoot at it from far away then it will most likely dive for the bushes before you manage to paralyze it completely. *The single digit counter on your jeep does keep record of more than 9 animals collected, it will simply show the last digit though. I would say the max for this is 255 but there is no ending or congratulations screen for getting so or so many. It probably just skips back to 0 after the max like the rounds. *The higher the round the faster you are. YOU, not the animal. This also applies to your driving. This is actually a great advantage for you and makes the game so much easier. Ever played Tower of Druaga and got those boots in the early levels? All of the sudden the game seemed smoother and more fun. Well this is EXACTLY like that, you wish they would have started out the game with this speed and sped up the animals in the later levels. Anyhow, the only downside is that your vehicle speed may result in running into animals by mistake as you speed around the outer circle. *There is no ending to the game, its point is simply to raise a high score. As the game does not even save outside the current session makes you wonder what the point is. Simply making it far in the game is already hefty, once you reach round 99 it will continue with 00 which is actually round 100. After 255 rounds (it will display 55 after twice reaching level 00 in your game) it will flip back to 01 but keep the same speed boost you were having during the previous levels. =============================================================================== 04.) CHEATING G0400 =============================================================================== I have gone through the game and found these PAR codes to help you play this game some more than what you are given in the retail box. There is no Pro Action Replay for the SG-1000 per se, but you can still use them on emulators. Name: Code: Description: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lives: 00C013:xx Amount of hunter's lives, e.g. 05 to keep at 5 Fuel: 00C016:xx Fuel amount, FF keeps 255 (shows 55) Caught Snakes: 00C020:xx Number of snakes caught Caught Monkeys: 00C021:xx Number of monkeys caught Caught Lions: 00C022:xx Number of lions caught Caught Elephants: 00C023:xx Number of elephants caught Round: 00C026:xx Round number xx Score: 00C028:xx 1st score number, FF=255 points 00C029:xx 2nd score number, FF=65280 points Countdown Snake: 00C103:xx Countdown above paralyzed snake Countdown Monkey: 00C113:xx Countdown above paralyzed monkey Countdown Lion: 00C123:xx Countdown above paralyzed lion Countdown Elephant: 00C133:xx Countdown above paralyzed elephant How to "beat" the game with cheats: ----------------------------------- Although I have managed to clear a round without using the codes, this makes it a lot easier and almost fairer. Basically I believe this game was not meant to be long-lasting and for someone playing modern games it may seem to lack any kind of depth, even to be very flawed. You run out of fuel almost within five minutes and beating just one round is extremely hard. To beat a round you must paralyze each of the four animals and keep them lying around, this will result in an instant 400 point bonus which clears the level. To achieve this goal by using codes, play the game using the fuel cheat on at first. This automatically extends the life of the game times a hundred. Next, hunt the animals as normal. This is not even cheating at the moment, and if you do not make use of the lives code then this is still a little tough. As you paralyze one of the animals, immediately switch on its countdown code so it does not reach 0. The other three animal types will still appear, do not worry. As you hunt the next one, switch on another countdown code. Soon you will find you have hunted the fourth type and the round ends. This may seem like a cheater's way to beat a game, but it is still kind of challenging. =============================================================================== YY.) VERSION HISTORY GYY00 =============================================================================== v1.0 First release (22nd of January 2007) v1.1 Cheated my way through the game to expand on this a lot. I think this is everything the game has to offer now although the lack of a refueling feature still makes me wonder (25th of August 2008) =============================================================================== ZZ.)
