The "Taiko" or "Daiko" (meaning big drum) is a traditional Japanese stick percussion instrument originated from buddhistic and shintoistic rites. They were also used for military motivation. Taiko are often made out of one piece of keyaki wood and have a barrellike appearence. Taiko are being played with two sticks, the so called "bachi". A typical bachi is about 22mm thick and 400mm long. If you like to experience some real Taiko music, you might try to visit one of those groups concerts all over the world: Yamato (http://www.yamato.jp/) and Gocoo (http://www.gocoo.de/) 2.0 HOW TO PLAY ................................................................ Unlike its big brothers, the PSP version won't be shipped with an external Taiko controller. Of course not. Sitting in the subway and drumming on a large Taiko might earn you some dimes but more likely will cause you a lot of trouble. So you have no choice but to play your drums by tapping those plain buttons on your PSP. This won't be any problem if you are a lucky member of the new mobil phone SMS generation typing about 40 messages a day using only your thumbs and superhuman speed. However, if you are just a lame videogamer aged 30+ who is using his cell phone only to make calls, then you have to face the bitter truth: You're not likely to ever finish even one simple song on the highest of the game's four difficulties, the Oni Mode. But that's not a big problem at all. Taiko No Tatsujin Portable 2 offers a high value of enjoyment and challenge even on the "Flower" and "Bamboo" difficulties. In fact it's one of the nicest games I played on the PSP yet and I am 30+ using my phone seldom. THE BUTTONS As you have two sticks when drumming or two bachi when playing a taiko you will have two buttons for both the Don and the Kai symbols. This way you can perform quick rolls by alternate pressing left on the d-pad and the O-button for example. D-PAD LEFT / O-Button : Don (the red circles) L-Button / R-Button : Kai (the blue circles) Analog Nub : Bell (Bell symbol) THE SYMBOLS On the top of the screen you will see notes in form of symbols moving from right to left, each one representing different actions you have to perform at the moment they hit the cirlce on the left (the one beneath the cute Taiko). Hit those notes within the right moment and you will get points depending on your timing. A silver Kanji popping means good timing, a gold one means perfect. Blue means you missed (your combo resets). Here are the symbols, than can occur: SMALL RED CIRCLE (DON) Hit D-PAD LEFT or CIRCLE SMALL BLUE CIRCLE (KAI) Hit L-BUTTON or R-BUTTON BIG RED CIRCLE (DON) Hit both D-PAD LEFT AND CIRCLE. You can also hit only one button but then you will only score half the points. BIG BLUE CIRCLE (KAI) Hit both L-BUTTON AND R-BUTTON. You can also hit only one button but then you will only score half the points. SMALL YELLOW LINE (DON) Alternate hit D-PAD LEFT and CIRCLE repeatedly until the line is over. BIG YELLOW LINE (DON/KAI) Alternate hit D-PAD LEFT, CIRCLE, L-BUTTON or R-BUTTON repeatedly until the line is over. SMALL RED CIRCLE WITH A BALLOON ATTACHTED TO IT (DON) Alternate hit D-PAD LEFT and CIRCLE repeatedly until the balloon pops. BELL Cycle the analog nub as fast as you can until you gain the bonus. *** !REMEMBER! *** During the whole game while browsing the menus "O" confirms a selection or let you enter a sub menu and "X" takes you back or cancels a selection! 3.0 MENU TRANSLATION ........................................................... 3.1 TITLE SCREEN Press Start to advance to the Game Select Screen. Press select to switch between "play mode" (a red taiko in the lower left corner) and "demo mode" (a yellow laughing taiko in the lower left corner). In "demo mode" the cpu shows a perfect run of the selected song. Press Start at the Select Screen to access a special Pause Menu (3.4.1) Press the circle button to actually start your chosen song in either "play" or "demo" mode. Press Start during gameplay to access the Pause Menu (3.4.2) After finishing a song you will get your bonus depending on your performance. After the bonus you will get your Don Points on a second screen. You need those points to unlock stuff in Taiko No Tatsujin. Leave it to the kids, this is no fun at all ;) 3.4.1.2 TWO PLAYER MODE CO-OP MODE Now this is very funny. Here you can play any song from the Arcade Mode together with a friend using one PSP! Player one uses the left buttons of the PSP to play and player two sticks to the buttons on the right side. When switching to co-op mode, you will see two Taikos in the lower left corner of the screen instead of one. Just like in the single player mode, you earn Don points for every song performance. 3.4.2 GAMEPLAY PAUSE MENU During the Pause Menu you have the following options: From right(!) to left: - RESUME - RESTART SONG - GO TO SONG SELECTION (3.4) - GO TO MAIN MENU (3.3) 3.5 MINI GAME [yellow] ....................................................... Try to drop it right in the middle and keep up the towers balance otherwise it will break down and result in a game over. Reach the moon to finish the mini game. 3.5.3 EATING CONTEST MINI GAME Try to remember the shining dishes shown to you at the beginning of every round. When the plates are served press d-pad left or cirlce to eat it (if you think it's a shining dish) or throw it away (if you think it's not eatable). The game ends when the time runs out. 3.5.4 BALLOON TWISTING MINI GAME Press the buttons shown in the text bubble above your head to create funny balloon models. Here you have three options: - NEW GAME (3.6.1) - CONTINUE (3.6.1) - ENDING PHOTO ALBUM (3.6.3) 3.6.1 NEW GAME/CONTINUE Okay, this is basically a little bonus game as well. The key is to travel around town using the map and meet up with different characters of the game. Eventually you trigger a handfull of song performances until you can end the game and earn one of the eight different endings the story mode has to offer. If you don't understand a word everyone is saying, simply go around town and check out every spot. You can easily gain a few endings doing so. Press Start on the map to bring up the options screen. Eventually you will enter a quiz game during the story mode. Here you will be asked questions. Select the right answer by drumming the combo shown below the three possible answers (left, middle or right). Good luck ;) 3.6.2 OPTIONS SCREEN - RECRUTED CHARACTERS - SAVE - SONG DIFFICULTY (EASY/MEDIUM/HARD) - RETURN TO MAIN MENU -> YES/NO? The scrolls in this screen represent difficulties you cleared (Flower, Bamboo, Tree and Demon). 3.9.2 ACHIEVEMENTS This is the Achievement menu. Here they keep track of your records and achievements including the time and date you unlocked or finished them. This menu includes unlocked songs and finished game modes. 3.9.3 HIGH SCORE TABLES Here you can check out the top four local players for every song in the game. So only the game profiles on your memory stick will compete. 3.9.4 MOVIES Here you can find all the movies you unlocked in the game like the intro sequence or the ending credits. You can also replay the interactive ending credits by selecting them from this menu. 3.10 GAME SETTINGS [purple] .................................................. Welcome to the center of game settings. Here you are able to change a lot of stuff and settings the game provides. - DOWNLOAD CONTENT (3.10.1) - SETTINGS (3.10.2) - MEMORY STICK (3.10.3) - BUTTON CONFIGURATION (3.10.4) - RESET SETTINGS (SELECT TO RESET ALL VALUES YOU CAN CHANGE IN THIS MENU) - GO TO MAIN MENU (3.3) 3.10.1 DOWNLOAD CONTENT Here you can download and delete additional songs from the internet. In the past you had the oppertunity to download songs from the internet directly via the PSP or by using a PC. However, Bandai/Namco stopped the latter one, so you now need a working WLAN connection on your PSP to download anything from Bandai/Namcos website. From right(!) to left: - PREPARE FOR DOWNLOAD (3.10.1.1) - DOWNLOAD SONGS FROM THE INTERNET (3.10.1.2) - CHECK/DELETE DOWNLOADED SONGS (Be careful, pressing circle on one of the songs will delete them from your memory stick!) - GO BACK (3.10) 3.10.1.1 PREPARE FOR DOWNLOAD This option will create a download folder on your PSP's memory stick. You then can place downloaded songs in that folder. However, this option isn't supported anymore. You now have to download them directly via the PSP. It might still be a good idea to create the folder. I dunno if you need it for the direct download, too. 3.10.1.2 DOWNLOAD SONGS FROM THE INTERNET This is one of the best features of the game. However you need to have a configured WLAN connection. Be sure to activate the WLAN switch on the left of the PSP and enter this option to conncet yourself to Bandai/Namcos site to download one or all of the songs they provide. After selecting the option, the game will ask you some questions like are you sure and security stuff like that. Like in most Japanese games, the left option is always "Yes" and the right is always "No". So select the left option of all three questions to access the download page. The game uses the build in browser to download the songs. Select the first of the three options on the download page (the red one) and scroll down the next page. There you need to agree to the user agreement (the left option). Remember doing all this with the "circle" button! Scroll down the page to select the songs you want to download. There are always two files that can be downloaded for every song. I think you need them both. At least I always did. By the way, the red ones are songs. The blue ones are bonus items, like a new title screen and stuff like that. To exit the download mode, simple press "X" and select the left option using the "circle" button. You will then return to the title screen. After you have downloaded one or more song from the internet, they will be uploaded to the system before the intro starts. It's the page with a lot of text and a percentage value on the bottom and a bunch of Chouchin (laterns). 3.10.2 SETTINGS Your basic game settings. Enjoy! From right(!) to left: - TAIKO SOUNDS (3.10.2.1) - SOUND MODE (3.10.2.2) - VOLUME BALANCE (3.10.2.3) - GO BACK (3.10.2) 3.10.2.1 TAIKO SOUNDS Use the digipad to select the sound you like to hear when you play the taiko. The first sound you will hear represents the "Don", the second one the "Kai". Pretty crazy stuff in here. You probably will stick to the subtle ones, like I do. 3.10.2.2 SOUND MODE Switch between the PSP lousy speakers (the right option) or headphones (the left option). Personally, I prefer to play this game using headphones. Dunno what Sony thought, when they build in that good-for-nothing piece of crap as speakers. 3.10.2.3 VOLUME BALANCE Arrange the balance of the backgroundmusic and the Taiko sounds. Changing it to the left means louder BGM/low drum effects and vice versa. 3.10.3 MEMORY STICK From right(!) to left: - SAVE DATA - LOAD DATA - AUTO SAVE (LEFT OPTION = OFF / RIGHT OPTION = ON) - DELETE DATA (contributed by chibi_syw from the GameFAQS board. Thanks!) 3.10.4 BUTTON CONFIGURATION Here you can select one of two pre-defined control setups. Preset one is for playing the game using four fingers (one for the digipad, one for the right buttons and two for each shoulder button). Preset number two is for playing the game with only two fingers (one for the digipad and one for the buttons on the right of the PSP). If you plan to master this game on all four difficulty settings you guessed right. You need to play it using four fingers then. However, if you just want to have some fun on the flower and bamboo level you can always finish those songs using only two fingers. 4.0 CHARACTER INDEX ............................................................
