INTRODUCTION _______________ Beyond: Two Souls (B:2S) is an interactive drama/action adventure game made by French video game and motion capture studio Quantic Dream (QD). Founder David Cage sees himself and his studio as the pioneer and standard bearer to the interactive motion picture genre. For the last ten years QD has produced two famous (at least in the Western world than in Asia) games of similar fashion to B:2S: Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy in North America) and the critically acclaimed Heavy Rain. Like B:2S, these games are set in United States and feature Anglo-Irish American characters, but the narrative and characterization are strongly French. In Beyond: Two Souls, you are Jodie Holmes, a special woman played by Canadian actress Ellen Page. You are also Aiden, a ghost with serious capabilities. Like other poltergeists, you can throw objects, but you are also able to possess people, kill them, heal their wounds, create energy shield, channel spirits, and even destroy other ghosts. Jodie and Aiden are the two mentioned souls. Jodie is supposedly never alone with Aiden stays by her side, but well, things are never easy for her. ______________ 2. WHY I WRITE ______________ I am a fan of Ellen Page, which is why I bought this game. Both B:2S and Ellen Page are not that big in Asia. People know her, especially with Days of Future Past, but her other (non X-Men) movies are too "indie" for Asian markets. Same goes with B:2S and other QD games - Heavy Rain might have caught attention with its bloody crane origami image and noir title (I thought it was a Japanese game), and it sold well in Japan, but again, they don't have the appeals offered by GTA, FIFA, or BioShock series. The close up of Jodie's face on the cover itself is enough for many male gamers to pass it as a "girl's game" (more on this later). So, I found myself enjoying this game, playing it at the same time with both GTA V and Gone Home, I watched Ellen Page's movies again, and decided that this is my next FAQ project (after Yakuza 4 and High School Story). ____________ 3. THANK YOU ____________ In completing the game and in making this guide, I owe much to Beyond: Two Souls wiki @ Wikia (especially to Funky Student and Anonymous), assorted YouTube video walkthroughs, and Absolute Steve who made the first FAQ of B2S on Gamefaqs.com and started the Neoseeker's guide to the game. Thank you. _________________ 4. GAME MECHANISM _________________ Quantic Dream sees itself as a pioneer in gameplay, although of course they are not unique. It wants to utilize PlayStation 3 buttons and controller to mimic real life movements. So, you control a human and a ghost. The story of Jodie and Aiden are told in non-linear chapters, although a marker before each chapter gives you the clear time line. The story spans throughout the roughly 17 years of the life of Jodie Holmes, from her terrifying childhood (her child chapters gave me the most frights) to her adulthood as an, er, X-men. --------- 4.1 JODIE --------- Jodie moves around with the left stick just like in any other game, but the designated "use" button is the right stick. Move it to the direction of the dot on the screen - sometimes you may choose one of two possible actions marked by different dots - like putting an object on a table or to drop it into a bin. Often Jodie needs to move her feet one by one, like when sneaking through a gap. The screen will prompt you to hold say L1, and then R1 while main- taning your hold on L1. If you fail to follow the instruction, sometimes Jodie will try again from the start, sometimes she fumbles but moves on with small ouchie and frown. Most of action buttons have no permanent function. Often they are used as a dialogue choice - although you won't know what exactly Jodie will say - the choices describe only her reaction, emotion, or topic of choice. If you are not quick enough, the computer will pick one choice automatically. Some of these choices naturally have serious consequences, I'll let you know which ones. Triangle button stands unique. It enables you to switch between Aiden and Jodie most of times, and in dialogues usually it is the button to end the discussion or the options (meaning say you have to pick a radio station. Triangle prompts Jodie to leave the radio). Other times the action buttons serve to simulate her arms. Say she climbs a rock or playing a guitar. X becomes her left while O becomes her right. In these sequences usually you have to press the buttons repeatedly. Then a cool but annoying thing, since it not always working for the first time: utilizing the motion sensor capability, the game often asks you to lift up or drop down the PS3 controller to, you've guessed it, help Jodie climbing up a ledge or jumping down (and even pouring down wine). If it does not work, try to match the timing on the screen. And breathe. But don't jerk your controller violently. Finally, Jodie might not look like it, but she's a black belt who can take down heavier and taller men (she must be very good with her chi/ki). In fighting or evading sequences, the screen will slow and you have kinda of bullet time. Fist & foot time then. On easier difficulty an arrow will show the direction your RIGHT STICK should take, while on harder difficulty you have to see what's on screen and react properly. Otherwise, either you'll mess up your heroic moment and got hurt or captured, but never dies. Personally, I think her fighting sequences are really cool, cooler than Yakuza series' quick time events. --------- 4.2 AIDEN --------- Switch between Jodie and Aiden using Triangle button. In some cases, you are locked with one of them. You see now that Aiden and Jodie are connected by a magical (ethereal, that's the word) cord, so Aiden cannot wander too far. Aiden's basic function is to move around areas shown with orange glows. Press L1 to get around those permitted spaces. Then being a typical (okay, okay, you're special, Aiden) poltergeist, he can throw and bust stuff. The usable objects are marked with blue dots. Lock with L1 and move LEFT and RIGHT STICKS down and move them to the center. Just a moment but feel the energy and horror (it's fun as long both Jodie and you realize Aiden's doing it. Otherwise it's scary). Next, Aiden can nudge a person. The person has blue dot on the body. Lock and move the sticks apart horizontally and push them toward each other. How about possessing people? The victim has orange aura. L1 and use the same horizontal pulling technique. The aura will flare violently (as your controller is shaking) and the person will have white eyes. They are now at your mercy. Speaking of mercy, what about killing? The victim has red aura. Pull and push sideways to choke them. To completely kill them, you have to maintain the hold until their red aura flies up (the soul's gone). But let's heal instead. The person with the injury or pain has green spot marked. To heal it, try to move the left and right dots with the sticks so that they cover the green spot. Eventually it will disappear and the person will feel better. Faith healing, which might come to accelerated antibody production and tissue regeneration (maybe). Then, energy shield to protect Jodie from injury and making life painful for human and demons trying to get her: hold both L1 and R1, pull the sticks apart, hold and feel the energy. Channeling spirit is tricky at first but trust me, you'll enjoy it once you get how to connect a line between an object or a dead body with Jodie's head. It's like directing a line using left and right hand sticks - a little bit up, a little bit down. Jodie will be possessed for a while and sees the memory - even becoming a medium on some occasions. Finally, destroying evil spirits. In general those dudes look like the sentinels from Matrix (it was a breakthrough sci-fi franchise back at the turn of the century, kids, and a bad case of milked trilogy). Lock, ANALOG STICKS DOWN, and push toward the dot. Bam. Occasionally they are catching Jodie and trying to drag her. In this case pull the sticks horizontally and then center them. This can be tricky, so if you fail your first try, pause, try the movement during the pause, and then try it again. Move the sticks away from each other until you feel the vibration and then move them toward each other. O yeah, I'm sorry if I got things mixed up especially on whether you have to press R1 or L1 - either both of them or just one. The game will prompt you and like what happened in other things: when you do it you just do it. So a typical chapter in B:2S goes like this - Jodie has a personal or an assigned mission. She gets some things done using her communication and fighting skills while Aiden manipulates heavy or unreachable objects. They might encounter evil spirits and Aiden defeats them. CIA desires Jodie and Aiden because Aiden can possess and strangle people and blowing up stuff just like that - Jodie is the carrier ship and Aiden is the fighter/ bomber jet. Finally, Jodie will ask Aiden to help her helping others by healing them and channeling memories to make sense of mysteries. -------------------------------------- 4.3 Duo Mode and Smartphone controller -------------------------------------- Using a second PS3 controller, you can play as both Jody and Aiden, although their actions are tightly scripted. Rather than PlayStation Move, QD chooses a smartphone app as the alternative controller. Download Beyond Touch app from Apple App Store or Google Play and make sure both your PS3 console and smartphone are on the same Wi-Fi channel. It's really neat, but it means more battery consumption for your already overworked smartphone - and I need it for the walkthrough references. In adventure game like this, missing one small point can lead to big consequences. O yeah, if you play the game with a smartphone, then as the instruction says, tap, drag, hold and pull the screen according to the situation. Actually it's cooler than using PS3 controller not only because it seems more hi-tech, but you feel like a magician. Unfortunately, PS3 cannot use both Ethernet and wireless connection. So if you want to play with your smartphone, you have to unplug your ethernet cable. To learn how to setup your PS3 wireless connection, search on Google or Bing or Yahoo! Search for "Connect PS3 to Wireless Network (Easy Settings)". Once your PS3 console and your smartphone are on the same Wireless Local Area Network, open Beyond Touch app and tap "Play" and tap on the icon. The app will connect to the PS3 and you're set. ---------------------------- 4.4 Limited Edition Disc Bug ---------------------------- I was disappointed the first time I put in the disc and PS3 does not detect it. I played another game for about 20 minutes and tried it again. It worked. There are complaints worldwide with the Beyond: Two Souls Limited Edition discs. Many replaced their copy with a new one only to find the same problem happening. For some reason the disc cannot load properly if your PS3 is "cold". So the easy solution is to play other games first before moving on to B:2S. There are also reports that the game loads successfully if you turn off the PS3, leave the disc inside, and turn it on again. Anyway, once my PS3 crashed during a cutscene. I turned it off (with the disc inside) and turned it again. Luckily the disc loaded well and I could continue from the last checkpoint (almost immediately after the crashed cutscene). ___________ 5. GLOSSARY ___________ .Black Sun: The core of the portal linking the other world with our world, and the big source of major f.ups. In ancient chemistry, it is the first stage, burning of the substance. In psychology, it is a symbol of creative destruction (to build a new way of life, you have to destroy your old) and of the womb (relevant to this story) since all of us emerge from the cavern of our mothers. Finally, you might have Nazism or so in mind. That is because the Nazis, who used German neo-paganism to replace Christianity, adopts the ancient German emblem of sun - source of life - as a symbol of uniquely "Aryan" source of energy. .CIA: Central Intelligence Agency, United States' foreign intelligence agency. Pop culture outside and inside United States often portray them unflatteringly. According to Tim Weiner's Legacy of Ashes (2007), they are more like incompetent and vain than evil, but don't tell that to non-Americans and the lefts. .DPA: Department of Paranormal Activities, a fictional (I guess) organization researching ghosts and paranormal activities with strong links to the United States government (covering the Armed Forces and Department of Defense) and the CIA. .Entities: Aiden and other ghosts here are referred as entities, and an entity is basically an object or unit. .Ethereal: Related to ether, the ancient Greek concept for pure air. In modern English, it is used to describe otherworldly, light, and mystical impression of certain things. .Fist Time: My term for slow motion sequences where Jodie's fighting numerous men using right thumb stick. She uses both fists and feet but Fist Time sounds better than Foot Time. Also when she has to evades crumbling or thrown objects. .Infraworld: The game's name for the world of the spirits. Naturally boneheads over the ages believe they can use spirits to harm their enemies, but the plans always backfire. So Jodie belongs to our human world, while Aiden belongs to the infraworld. Which world they will both end up in? .Kaziristan, Republic of: It's People's Republic of China. But both Quantic Dream and Sony do not want B:2S to be banned in China like Battlefield 4 is (interestingly, officially Black Ops II is not). Of course, they could make it into "North Korea" like in numerous TV series and action movies, but unlike United States, France does not want to annoy North Korea. .Navajo: A Native American people living mostly in the states of Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. There is a semi-autonomous Navajo Nation around these states. While in B:2S (and probably now) the people prefer to describe themselves as Dineh, politics-wise the tribal leaders see Dineh as the past, and now as modern Americans, they are the Navajo. So, why were they called Navajo? The Spanish described the Dineh as "Apaches from the ravine fields (navajo)". Then the geographic pointer stuck. .Poltergeist: All cultures worldwide have fear for ghosts who can cause noises, move objects, and hurt people. The Germans called them "Noisy Ghosts". Aiden is one of them. Skeptics explain the phenomenon as illusion, tall tale, mass hysteria, or physical stuff like silicon vapor (ball lightning), micro earthquake, and unusual air currents. Science fictions and fantasies (I don't read them) might either attribute them to strong brain waves (like what many scientists in B:2S investigate) or yeah, spirits like Aiden. .Somalia: A country in eastern Africa and is probably one of the worst countries in the world (along with Zimbabwe and North Korea). Torn between Communist and the Islamist factions for decades, by 1991 the government had lost real power. Until today it's a perfect case of what life could be without state and government - may the most ruthless clan rules for a day. .Uncanny Valley: A concept in art, video game and animation design, and psychology which tries to explain why we are uncomfortable with corpses and disfigured people, we feel uneasy with ancient statues and old paintings, zombies are money makers, and Westerners are negative toward the idea of humanoid robots (unlike Japanese and Koreans). To simplify, we are fine with other humans and with things that don't look like living humans or animals. But if the thing looks halfway human, naturally we are disgusted and frightened. So in B:2S, the evil spirits that look like dragons or aliens don't scare me, but a self-walking Barbie doll does. Quantic Dream perpetually flirts with the uncanny valley concept in their releases, and the death valley is a serious risk for studios who seek profit instead of disaster, especially for 3D feature animation intended for families. Compare Adventures of Tintin (2011) with the Polar Express (2004). ATTENTION: Now you have two choices of walkthrough. SPOILER-FULL WALKTHROUGH ___________________________ OK, I'm sorry I'll give things up. First, I love to tell amusing stories (making stories amusing, not that B:2S has amusing plot although some critics said so). Then, I want to save you from some heart attacks, making you prepared for some boo! moments prepared by Quantic Dream. And more importantly, I want you to be clear on your chances and choices since different choices can lead to different endings. And different trophies. Come on, by this time all of us has known who Aiden is. ____________ 6.1 Prologue ____________ 2013, location uncertain. Jodie begins her story. Where she tells it and what has happened to her and other people depend on you. __________ 6.2 Broken __________ 2012, an American small town. Here's the real prologue. Random SWAT/Spec Ops teams: Imperial Stromtroopers of the 21st century. __________________ 6.3 The Experiment __________________ 1998, DPA Test Facility. OK, we can play now. We have our heroine with two parental figures - the nice black uncle Cole and the neurotic white dad (hey, it's Willem Dafoe, of course he is) Nathan. First you can explore your living room and interact with some items, but while it's fun to explore, you'll just waste Cole's precious time. Cole will put on a device to measure Jodie's brain waves, saying it's like a crown and she's like a princess. Levels later I thought how sexist Cole is before I remembered that princess is his affectionate name for her and she likes it. In this tutorial, you learn about picking dialogues through action buttons, interacting with things with the right stick, and activating Aiden with triangle button. With Aiden you can play around with nudging people, possessing them, and hey, what's that BLUE ORB under the desk in the corner of the monitoring hall? Grab it with both sticks (check the vibration) and you'll unlock a bonus. Bonuses are production sketches, beyond the scene videos, cast profiles, and Quantic Dream's demos. It's all Blu-Ray extras, not like glyphs or codex in Assassin's Creed. The experiment starts and Jodie has to point which Zener cards chosen by the person in the other room - Kathleen, not Dr. Peter Venkman. I don't know how others did it, but Jodie cannot - she uses Aiden to take a peek. O yeah, use triangle to return to Jodie. Poor Kathleen then has to contend with Aiden messing up things around her, scaring her. Now you have two choices which will result in one of two trophies. OBEDIENCE Option: When Cole you to stop, you stop Aiden. Got that? You want to stop but dunno how? Triangle to switch to Jodie and then X to stop. UNCONTROLLABLE Option: This is a string of six actions over the game. Basically, you drive Aiden to become an evil ghost. Here, he'll start his criminal career by ignoring Cole's order and choke Kathleen. But why would you break this poor woman even further? O yeah, you will get SOMEBODY ELSE? Trophy for pressing Triangle button and unleashes Aiden for the first time. Er, in the lab, not before. Q: Hey, I've choked Kath! Where's my trophy? A: Later little fella. You haven't hurt nobody yet. _______________ 6.4 The Embassy _______________ 2009, an Arabic Embassy in a Middle Eastern country (thought by Wikia contributors as Saudi Arabia). Sorry for the convoluted description. So Jodie attends a party in a fictional Arabian country's embassy and it's in a friendly/ unfriendly territory. If she gets caught, she won't get a fair trial. United States is in friendly terms with all Arab monarchies, anyway, but it does not protect American citizens from being persecuted by local authorities. Jodie enters the Embassy with CIA agent Ryan Clayton. You can socialize and wander around the main hall, and then doing your job by going to the ladies room to spend quite some time there. The oysters are not that fresh but don't spread the words around - have pity for the chef. Your target is the sheik, possibly the ambassador since CIA needs Jodie and Aiden to access documents in his safe above. You have two methods for this job: CLEAN JOB Option: Activate Aiden, find the unclosed security room (secure? Heh) and distract the guard by messing with the mug or the TV. When he's distracted, pause the security monitor. Now fly through the double doors, approach the desk, find the switch and hit it, open the safe, and read the book. POSSESIVE SPY Option: This is badass since no other CIA agent can pull this trick. Look for the Sheik (the only fat man in...you know the look) and possess him. Walk him slowly and steadily upstairs into his office, the same big room with double doors. Again, find the switch in the drawer, and open the safe to retrieve the book. The guards will think it's their boss doing his business. On the minus side, you cannot let a possessed person bumps into another person since he'd be de-possessed. Luckily no one wants to have a minute with the Sheik. Anyway, if you possess the sheik, you can eavesdrop the conversation between the American ambassador and Ryan on first name basis. You see how dumb CIA is? Canonically, Jodie knows nothing about this conversation since it will make future chapters bit illogical. Although that might explain why does Aiden hates Ryan, among other things. OK, you can also possess a guard, although the purpose is not to open the safe but to increase Aiden's body count. Claim the body of a guard on the second floor and brings him to jump over the rail. Apparently during the commotion, you can access the safe and book. This is number two in the requirements of UNCONTROLLABLE. Whatever method you choose, Jodie is in the bathroom with notes and pencil because she can make a !perfect copy! of the secret documents - as long as you press the right buttons. This is, however, a tasking duty since Jodie gets nosebleed. Plus it's messy since in her trance states, her notes are scattered all over the cubicle. Imagine if a woman nearby takes notice. A male guard outside wonders what kind of bowel discontent the Western woman has inside and knocks the toilet door furiously (such impolite man). Luckily CIA has another female agent planted, an Arab-speaking woman who reminds the guard that's it a taboo area for men. Mission accomplished but Jodie is a wrecked woman, not for the last time. ______________ 6.5 The Party ______________ 2004, DPA staff's neighborhood. Ready for more teenage trauma? Nathan is nice enough to drive Jodie to a teenage birthday party in ugly dress and prepares her gift, an Edgar Allan Poe's book. That's like, hello? Don't just barge in, at least press the bell. Kirsten's mom, who will be given rough treatment had she stayed on Wisteria Lane (Desperate Housewives) or in Fort Griffith (The Unit) leaves the kids to celebrate a harmless daytime birthday party. Jodie tries to fit in but these girls are too mean, the faux hipster and the, er, half-Asian? Jodie herself is more than happy to socialize with other kids. Personally she's not doing bad. Blonde hunk Matt makes a move on Jodie, and FYI he's not a good guy, so either you can rebuff him - or you can play dear so that Jodie gets her first kiss. You may interpret her grin this way. The kids naturally dare Jodie to show her special powers. Switch to Aiden and play with any object. OR You can just ignore them knowing that they won't get impressed anyway, and naturally you'll get booed. Unimpressed (or inwardly scared), they will gang up on her and Matt will accuse her as a slut, whether you rebuffed him or actually kissed her. Yep girls, that's how it goes for some guys. The faux hipster will actually assault Jodie. So Jodie is locked under the stairs. Switch to Aiden to unlock the door, and now you have two choices. COLD BLOOD Option: If you refused to demonstrate Aiden's power, you can get a trophy by taking a Jesus/Gandhi option and just leave quietly. But let's get back at 'em for the REVENGE Option. Aiden has several package plans to make these little runts sorry. To start, fly into the living room (L1) and smash the cake, then something nearby the TV cabinet. The teens will flee but Aiden has locked the door. Now choose the severity of your revenge. I've named them Asian style. Gold Package: Scare them but don't knock them out or start a fire. They will rush out from the house and pointing at Jodie. No prize. Platinum Package: If you are for the UNCONTROLLABLE Trophy. Scare them but don't knock out everyone and start a fire using the candles or the oven. Kirsten will run to embrace her mother and calls Jodie a devil. REVENGE is achieved and Aiden gets his no.3, but Kirsten still yaps. Diamond Package: Knock ALL teens out using furniture - each teen needs about two strikes to knock them out using different objects. You have to be quick in finding objects to use before Jodie recalls Aiden. First just get the easiest ones while for another play you can save the best for last - like Matt or the cruel girl. REVENGE is achieved. Jodie will leave the home and meet Kirsten's mother, who will be in for a nasty surprise. ___________________ 6.6 First Interview ___________________ 1997, DPA Facility. Aiden can rock the chair but Jodie's still mad at him. Enter Nathan's office for their first meeting. Jodie explains (if you wish) that Aiden's been with her since she was born (hmm...). Jodie than draws Aiden, which does not look that scary - a mess of scribbles connected with Jodie through a cord. Finally, do a little demonstration for Nathan as Aiden. Three more facts: Jodie cannot tell Aiden to do things at her will, Jodie is afraid of Aiden, and Jodie is full of scratch marks. Wait a minute, if Jodie was named so by her parents, then who named Aiden? Jodie? We'll get to that. Aiden did not scratch Jodie. Monsters did. ______________________ 6.7 Welcome to the CIA ______________________ 2008-2009, Camp Peary, location classified. We're in action adventure territory now. Use left sticks for Jodie to move and you'll meet the Fist Time event. Kazuma Kiryu and Trevor Philips, here's Jodie Holmes. Use the right stick to help Jodie jumps and duck and left stick for her fat ass (drillmaster's word, not mine) to crawl. Climbing and jumping are simulated by series of action buttons and motion sensor. Unfortunately we have no 1980's power pop for these training montages. Jodie will learn to fight, sit up, running faster and jump higher, taking cover and shooting (X and R1), knocking barrels away with Aiden, solving equation (huh?), and...did somebody say yoga? Unlike Michael, Jodie fails hers so we go to medic Aiden who will learn the healing technique. The vibration doesn't go crazy here so you won't be too excited with the virtual massage of Ellen... Jodie. Your final test is flag capture in a warehouse. X is to take cover, Square is to takedown a soldier (poor grunts - get knocked out by a little girl), and Triangle to switch to Aiden. A soldier is overlooking the flag on the top of container so you can climb the ladder, sneak on him, and then jumping on his pal below. If you're spotted by a soldier, one of your teachers, the smaller Steve Austin or the Alpha Asian, will yell at Private Holmes and you have to redo the test. If you get to the cutscene where Ryan taunts you, then you've won, since Aiden has possessed a soldier behind him. Now Jodie is a CIA black op, just like Alex Mason and Jason Bourne. If you pass the trainings well, you'll get PERFECT SOLDIER, FIGHT APPRENTICE, and STEALTH APPRENTICE trophies. I think this chapter is the most replayable one. Note: Although the trainings might take three years, this chapter happens before the Embassy. Either the Embassy mission takes place in 2010 or CIA sends Jodie before she's a full-fledged agent, since they're dumb. __________ 6.8 Hunted __________ 2011, rural Pennsylvania Did I mention Jason Bourne. Aiden is pretty bored but of course nobody appreciates his poltergeist acts, including Jodie. Eventually the train will stop and police crowd the station. If you scout them as Aiden, naturally the dogs are aware of your presence and will bark, although the police won't care (personally I think, yes, that's why dogs bark randomly at nights). Uh oh, the police are boarding the train since you're a major fugitive! Wake Jodie up by pushing her drink bottle on the table. Otherwise the police will wake Jodie and she has to resort to hit them with her bag. Now you have to choose between two trophies: HOUDINI or CATCH ME IF YOU CAN. In any case, you're running from the police and luckily no passenger is brave enough to help them. HOUDINI Option: Just mess up and let the police catch you. Then unlock the handcuffs with Aiden and jump from the train. CATCH ME...Frank Abagnale option: Dodge carts and falling bags and you have two escape options. One is a window, where you have to fight a police that grabs you. Otherwise, Jodie will get into the toilet and you need Aiden to open the top hatch. Now you're on the top of a speeding train under heavy rain. How poetic. Avoid the climbing policemen but eventually you'll get into fights. Jodie is not mean enough to knock them off the train ("Kids, Dad died on duty, killed by a college girl") and so they'll surround her. Now Aiden will use his energy shield ability so Jodie can jump to the woods below unharmed. The police won't give up and now use helicopters and dogs. Damn, Level 3 wanted and no Pay'n'Spray on the radar! Run down the woods with left sticks and keep your eyes open for the obstacles. Up and down. Cross the river and the police are yelling to each other about the dogs. I hate aggressive animals in video games (Curse you, Rockstar North and Ubisoft Montreal). Eventually two police dogs are onto you. They are not trained to kill but are trained to subdue. HOUDINI Option: Just give up. The police will catch up. Back on the street, humiliate the handcuffs' maker again and steal the bike. ABAGNALE Option: Fight the dogs with right thumb sticks and then O and X to defeat the stronger dog. They'll admit your superiority as the alpha bi... female dog (hey, that's the dictionary definition). Pretty educational so now I know what to do when facing an aggressive neighborhood dog - grab a stick, kick its head, and find a stone. Neighbors' complain and tetanus injection can wait. Now Jodie has to climb a rock (she's good at rock climbing) and you might have to hold L1 and R1 in turns, use X and O, and lift the PS3 controller up. And oh, hold Triangle when police below are scanning the rocks with flashlight. Back on the road with some policemen waiting on car and a motorbike. You can possess one of them (the one driving car to keep ramming on things, or the motorbike police to grab a shotgun from a car and shooting randomly to scare others). Your target is the motorbike, and admire how small Jodie can ride a big police motorbike (I'm sorry I keep bringing up her size). The helicopter is chasing you, but no action news heli around. And you have no RPG around. So just ride... HOUDINI Option: Or not. Stop the bike and think about the troubles you've made. The police will catch up. Then possess a SWAT member and create more troubles. ABAGNALE Option: Just follow the road until Jodie stops before a bridge. Over the bridge is the mysterious SWAT team. Ride through the bridge full speed, full shield. Superb human bowling. The commander reports that Jodie heads for Bakerstown, there's one in Pennsylvania. Getting into the town, a SWAT member shoots the bike and Jodie limps on behind a car, surrounded. Want another trophy? Pay attention. It's called AIDEN's APOCALPYSE and here's the checklist. 1. Gas Station. Loosen the fuel hoes, possess a SWAT member nearby and shoot the fuel. 2. Gun Store. Find the building with Hunting Cabin sign (I know, not easy with Aiden's sight) and possess the SWAT driver in front of it. He will ram the truck into the store full of ammos. 3. Church. Smash the church tower twice. That's blasphemy, Aiden. 4. Helicopter. Who needs RPG? First, you need to get near Jodie and conviniently she's in front of theater. Unlock the door (she'll keep yelling that they are getting her) and she'll rush in. The damned helicopter will show up. Possess the pilot and crash the bird. The helicopter crash ends the chapter. Jodie will step out and threatens the SWAT commander with good dose of F words. So yeah, she and Aiden have killed several American citizens at this point. _______________________ 6.9 MY IMAGINARY FRIEND _______________________ 1997, northern United States. God, this chapter's scary. Jodie's bedroom needs Ghostbusters' big cleanup since it's polluted with evil ghosts. Personally Jodie blames Aiden for attracting their attention (and being useless). Jodie's pretty bored on that winter afternoon. Mom is in the kitchen while Dad's in home office. Jodie can watch TV but the cartoon is boring. She can wander the kitchen and the living room, or going upstairs where things get uncomfortable. If you play with the dolls for an innocent tea party, the camera will zoom on the dolls' heads and you cannot cancel it. Curse you, David Cage. You have to wait for the eventual moment where a third doll walks in with her head facing rear (smiling at you) and being violent at others. Jodie blames Aiden. If you make silly faces in front of the bathroom's mirror, a ghost will join in. Reminds me of making slanty eyes (I'm Chinese) in front of bathroom mirror and scaring the hell out of myself. The useful thing you can do is to go to the parents' bedroom, switch to Aiden and locate a box on top of the drawer. Drop it and Jodie will channel a photo (photo I guess). So, were they talking about Aiden or someone else? Downstairs for a trophy. Switch to Aiden and do these three things: 1. Levitate the dining table chairs and make a pile of them. Aiden will annoy Jodie later on with the same trick. 2. Turn on the radio. 3. Pass some cookies for Jodie. First, as Jodie look at the cookie jar on the top of fridge (X). Press X to ask Mom for cookie. Of course, no snacking before dinner. Now switch to Aiden, grab a cookie and pass it to Jodie. If you fail (perhaps not by doing number 1 & 2 first), the cookie will fall and Jodie's mom will sigh. You may quit the level and restart from last checkpoint. If Jodie eats her cookie and you've done 1 & 2, then you'll get TEAMMATES trophy. And Jodie's Mom, Susan, gets more grey hairs. Ready for more fright? Susan asks Jodie to fetch cooking oil in the garage (who does put cooking oil in the garage? Did Jodie's Dad use it as biofuel? In 1997?). I've learned to not be afraid of darkness. For Jodie, evil things do lurk in darkness. Enter the garage, and even after you've turned on the lights, you'll feel the vibration and the eerie sound. Who's smart enough to put a mannequin's head facing the door? Walk Jodie past it and grab the big can of olive oil and walk steadily toward the door. Otherwise, if you linger for too long, the door will suddenly shut (HOLY...) and Jodie will run searching for light and scream. Her mother will come in to comfort her. After the incident, Mom lets Jodie plays in the backyard. First, put on your outdoor clothes next to the front door and go to the backyard. As Aiden you can make a pristine ice statue of Jodie. Take that, Edward Scissorhands. Jodie will hear boys playing snowball fight on the road and she wants to bail from the house. Aww, little Jodie (hey, she's 7. That's little) cannot climb the fence. Aiden, however, can make a hole and Jodie can sneak out. For snowball fight, make snowball using L1 and throw using R1. Eventually a mean boy will grab Jodie and suffocate her with his palm. Yeah, I've heard some kindergarten kids are psychos in the making. Strangle him with Aiden. Now good dad Mr. Holmes will pick Jodie while the bully calls her a witch. Step four toward UNCONTROLLABLE: check. You'll understand by now that Mr. Holmes is a bad dad and tries to hit Jodie. Naturally Aiden is angry. At night, as Aiden watch the conversation between her parents. I knew it. These losers are not her real parents and she's adopted. Mulder and Scully might able to help tracking down Jodie's real parents (kudos if you get this 1997 reference). Jodie sleeps, the door's open and the hall is lighted, but it does not prevent the ghosts from terrorizing her. Monsters do exist. Under her bed. __________________ 6.10 The Condenser __________________ 2007, ADA Condenser Facility. Oh, the humanity. Jodie is waken up by Nathan and is driven to a scene of a big mess: ADA's Condenser facility, where scientists opened portal to the other world, Infraworld as Nathan calls them, and now Jodie has to fix their mess. Ghostbusters are unavailable since this facility cannot be exposed. Scientists and soldiers lie around dying so it's up to this high schooler with skinny jeans and high top Converse to defeat the demons. Had she was Japanese I believe she'd enter the facility in school uniform. Ground floor is clear and Jodie presses the elevator button. It's stuck, so as Aiden go down to find a luggage is blocking the door. Push it to repair the elevator. There are rude awakenings and there is the midnight sight of a bloody elevator. Channel the dead scientist to see his death by that heavy luggage. Go downstairs. Sorry dying soldier, you ain't scare me like Jodie's dolls did. So, there's a trophy called CHANNELING MASTER, and you have to collect eight bodies. That was one, the elevator scientist. Now, inside the tunnel and another dead scientist. Once I walked past it and activated Aiden, it suddenly floated, but when I turned around the animation returned to him lying on the floor. Production bug or the ghost possessing him is terrified of Aiden and backs down. The door is locked so as Aiden, go pass the door, find the switch on the security panel and open the door. In another playthrough, when Jodie's entering the room, there's a cutscene of the possessed scientist looking at the player. OK, that's scary. Channel the security guard trying to be sexy on the desk. That's two. Move into the servers room and channel the third body. Push down the servers and the ventilation door (sorry, I don't know the right term) as Aiden. Now you get to other sections bypassing the fire and the piles. Find body four and use Aiden to smash the glass walls with tables. Body five and six are around these areas. Uh, fire. As Aiden, go through a fire to retrieve a working fire extinguisher (thank you, dead fireman). Jodie paid attention during the fire drill and she can use the device properly to put out the fire. Hey, we've found a survivor! Or not. He'll get possessed and the ghost is angry with Jodie. What a misogynist. He might have worked at [SNIP and SNIP - my lawyer]. That was a brutal fight. A zombie fight really. After that, I'm not sure if you can channel another body here. Keep finding an open path and you'll find a dead soldier, channel-able. Then get into the room, where ghosts are waiting for you. Duck, jump, run. It's all Jodie here, even when a ghost is grabbing her. What the ghosts are like? Black with sharp teeth and red eyes, like Sentinels in The Matrix. Finally, icy hallway. Not sure why it's icy. Either the temperature has to be zero or the entities messed up with the cooling. Jodie dresses improperly, moodlet down. He passes even more dead scientists (all guys, maybe QD cannot bring themselves to draw dead and broken female scientists). Of course you need a security card, it's from the black old scientist on the corner of the right room. Well, all the dead scientists here are, were, guys because ghosts possess them and they are crowding Jodie. Evade and push them and run to the door. The door takes sometimes to unlock, so Aiden gets to play Space Invaders. Keep calm despite Jodie's screams, pull the thumb sticks down and push up to pop those zombies. Finally Jodie goes inside. The last of channel-able bodies are here. If you want the CHANNEL MASTER TROPHY, I hope you've got eight counts. Otherwise restart the level or try another time. Naturally the switch won't work and so Jodie has to brave the chamber full of ladders and entities swarming around. That always the way it is. Run as Jodie, avoid entities if you can. But there are scripted occassions where a ghost gets Jodie or they are blocking Jodie's path. She'll call for Aiden's help again. OK, stay calm even as a ghost is pulling Jodie. Where are the blue dots? If they are standing apart horizontally, then hold L1 and R1 (just to be sure) and push them toward each other. If they are close, and the ghost is flying toward Aiden instead Jodie, pull down the sticks and return them up to blast the ghosts. Jodie, who is not afraid of heights and has vise grips will eventually enter the second console and turns off the condenser, shutting down the portal to the Infraworld. Faster and more efficient than the Avengers. We hope the American government has learnt the lesson. Nah. You're likely to get the PORTAL SHUTDOWN trophy. Otherwise you've missed something Aiden should have done, like capping the zombie scientists, defeated the ghosts, and as Jodie, got into the emergency console. I'm surprised with the possibility of ending this level by leaving the facility early. "Bah, I don't feel like it, Nathan. Can't be fudged. Let me sleep and we'll get through that tomorrow. Not." "That's fine Jodie. The Ghostbusters are here. Slimer will eventually reach the console after Ray and Winston are desperately hanging on the ledge, screaming frantically for help." _____________ 6.11 Homeless _____________ 2011, winter on the Boulevard of Broken Dreams. Note: Naturally, B:2S takes place in the same universe as Heavy Rain and the Origami Killer is on the news. Boy this is a long and painful but important chapter. We pick up what's left after Runaway. Jodie is now a bum and calls Nathan, believing she's about to die. Passing out on the street, entities come to get her. Aiden can shoo them but they'll keep come back, so attract the attention of nearby guy by knocking the shopping cart, himself, and the trash bin. He'll spot Jodie and picks her. Jodie finds herself in his shelter and meets Stan, a nice guy. O yeah, this chapter is also strongly French instead of American, with inspiration from 2003 Japanese feature animation Tokyo Godfathers, about three homeless who raise an abandoned baby during Christmas. So there's Stan, alcoholic black man Walter, junkie Jimmy, and pregnant runaway Tuesday. Jodie can talk many things with Stan and channel his late wife's photo (he won't mind, and thank goodness Ted Mosby has had two kids or he might end up like Stan). She can introduce herself to others but no conversation (not easy, surely). Now. The bad, bad aspect of B:2S. There's a knife on a tire and the shelter is located above a freeway. The game offers you to tempt Jodie to end her own life - such distressing scenes. Even if you tell her to, Aiden will thwart her attempts. Such unnecessary and disturbing possibilities. So, leave the shelter and follow the path to the street below. Stan will catch up with you and asking you to help him begging for dinner money. Jodie has better money making solutions. You can follow the street until you reach an ATM machine, and Aiden will arrange a $10 withdrawal (wonder how it will look like on camera). Better, cross the street to overhear two men talking about the recession. Ignore the sleazy guy's remark. Seriously (but yeah, female homeless have to deal with such remarks every day). Aiden can remove some coins from the payphone and the newspaper vendor. Personally I think it's about refunding admin fees from big corporates like News Corp, AT&T, and Citibank so it's not stealing [it is - my lawyer]. Keep walking and you'll reach the canonical method of earning big bucks today. You'll meet a homeless with a guitar and Jodie offers to play it. She'll sing Beck's 2002 song "Lost Cause". It's night when you're done and you get your share of $15. MONEY TO EAT trophy then. Stan will take your earning to the supermarket across the street, but some punks are jumping on him. I know that some Japanese teens do bully the homeless, maybe it's not a surprise if it also happens in the West. You don't need Aiden to choke them. As Jodie, you're more than qualified to kick their asses, CIA style. Over dinner, you will get to know each other and Jodie will eventually reveal that she's special. Walter thinks she's on drugs so it's Jesus time. Channel Tuesday to check that her baby is still alive (but in wrong position ...ok that's creative, not medical image). Heal Jimmy's illness (some say from drugs, some say from the withdrawal). And channel Stan. Hey wait, whose arms are those? I hope you're not uneasy with Oracle Jodie. This scene is a signature French movies' sentimentality and yeah, feminist bloggers hate it. MIRACLES trophy unlocked. We're done? Far from it. Jodie wakes up as Tuesday's about giving birth. Stan asks Jimmy to get into a nearby abandoned building and Walter to be with Tuesday. He and Jodie will steal stuff they need from the supermarket. As Aiden, get past the door and unlock the main gate with the switch nearby. Don't go in yet, as you need to shut down the camera overlooking the main gate. SMART THIEF trophy for you. Stan will go in while Jodie waits. Then follow Stan and Jimmy to the building. OK, as the only other woman in the group you have to help Tuesday's labor. Even Aiden is locked out by both Jodie and this game for now. Turn on the heater, remove Tuesday's pants, and prepare the clothes and the scissors. Comfort her, then ask her to breathe, push, and more assurance. Yay, clean baby, just like in other movies. Oh, you have to cut her cord. That's the wrong way to do it, but Jodie went to military college, not medical school. Done? Sorry, no. And uh, if you want to be evil, here's another trophy campaign. If you want to be good, here's another trophy campaign. Basically it's about the end of the game. Do you want to be a ghost like Aiden, or do you want to continue living as a mortal? Here's the shopping list: Walter and Jimmy. Do you want to join them in afterlife or in United States of America? Oh, if they are not fine enough, wait until you get the next names to kill or save. So everyone is asleep after a dramatic night, but fire breaks out in the building. Wake up Stan nearby, and he'd say that Walter is on the same floor while Jimmy and Tuesday are upstairs. A BETTER WORLD (Dead) Option: Don't bother save them with Aiden and let them die in the fire. Wayan Brothers and Spike Lee will accuse you of racism for letting a black man dies (they jokingly, he seriously). SAVED ALL (Alive) Option: Unlock the door with Aiden to save Walter. Go upstairs and Jimmy is practically cornered. He won't jump so possess him with Aiden and make him jump. Finally, get Tuesday and her baby (for an important reason, they cannot die) by crossing the windows and kick the glass in. Now you're alone in the burning building with the fire devilishly cutting all access. Now, two other choices to end this sequence. First, just give up. Jodie will lose consciousness and Stan will go inside. She'll go to hospital for carbon inhalation. Or, keep running upstairs to find an opening (evading flying objects with Fist Time) and jump protected by Aiden Shield. So cool and heroic until the thugs return and bash Jodie with that baseball bat. She'll go to hospital for head trauma. Maybe carbon inhalation is better. Jodie's spirit joins the great river of souls and she sees a lot of faces, including who I suspect are Quantic Dream staff. Then she's in front of a
television...and Teddie is not around so this is not Midnight Channel. You will see meanie men taking away a baby from a woman who looks like older version of Jodie. Aah. Then she sees herself as a soldier in a post- apocalyptic world - just like when Neo sees the real face of Earth on the Matrix. Enough viewing so Aiden drags her back to Earth. Jodie is in hospital with her bald haircut, and like in other fictions, she can remove the IV needle by herself. If you feel bad about the head trauma, don't worry. Look at things in your room and it's full of happy memories - the thugs got arrested, Stan has found a job and home, Zoey is three months old and is raised well by her mother Elisa, and Jimmy is clean. Leave the room, and oh, damn, CIA agents come to get you (it takes them three months to locate a comatose fugitive? So dumb). Hey, even dumber, they declare that they are CIA going to make an arrest in American soil. The nurse should have said that's illegal. Bye stupid CIA. ________________ 6.12 First Night ________________ 1998, DPA Lab. Jodie is moved from her unhappy home into the DPA lab and this primary school kid gets an apartment to kill with large living room and cozy bedroom. Grab Jodie's jammies and go to the bathroom. No changing scene, in the name of law. Then back to Jodie's bag to get a flashlight and Bunny Gruff, who looks innocent so far. Jodie asks Aiden for a bedtime story so activate the flashlight for a moving elephant shadow. As Aiden, get around the apartment and check Jodie again. It's the demons. Jodie asks Aiden to get help, so fly (L1 past the mirror in living room) and target Cole's chair to wake him up. Security my a. By this time the demons have dragged Jodie to the living room (really, what's their problem with her?) and you have to pull and blast them using thumb sticks. When it's done, Cole and Nathan barge in (the law of the belated reinforcements). Jodie is delighted that Aiden is not afraid of ghosts anymore. Otherwise, if as Aiden you didn't help Jodie (and dealt with her screams for some minutes), Jodie will be traumatized when Nathan and Cole are in and asks Aiden to be brave and to stay with her. Since I believe you've destroyed the demons, you'll get ENTITIES APPRENTICE trophy. _____________________ 6.13 Like Other Girls _____________________ 1 July 2006, DPA Lab. Aww...the little girl has grown up. Bunny Gruff is still there but the pink socks are now lace stocking and the red hair is now purple. The apartment is well furnished with rebellious marks and decorations. And she has learned a lot of new words. No night out for Jodie, although actually Jodie can do several stuff like you know, watching Saturday Night Live or net browsing (MySpace) or playing video games (Okami or Sims 2). Apparently Jodie has made some friends (has she?) and they invited her for a night out. Jodie will sob on the couch, getting angry with Cole (while doing her best Avril impression), and sobbing on her bed. If you think she's damn annoying, well, that's 16 year olds for you. She should have spared some thought for Cole, who has to spend his Saturday night in a dark monitoring room being abused by a teen. Nice guitar jam, anyway, Jodie. Why don't you play Guitar Hero, then? Jodie will ask Aiden to pointlessly damage goods in the living room. Cole does not budge so Aiden possesses him. Oh poor Cole. Tell him to open Jodie's room and the door to the hall. He'll follow Jodie and his ID card is handy to get into the lobby. Now. This chapter generates another controversy, and how do you end this chapter has serious consequence for another. The security guard will ask why does Jodie go out at night and she's a bad liar. To get a better trophy in another chapter and to avoid more trauma to Jodie's psyche, I opt to end the chapter here. Choose anything except "Speak" (X) and eventually the guard will touch Cole, waking him up. Nathan will be angry with Jodie but that's it. OR OK, we can still avoid both the trauma and the controversy while prolong the gaming time. Choose "Speak" and well, Cole won't become a puppet to Aiden or Jodie's words, but the guard will let them go. Cole's car is the only one on the parking lot (see Jodie? Not everyone has fun on Saturday night) and have him unlock it. You can choose to sit at the back or getting into the trunk. IF you choose to sit on the back, the gateway guard will get suspicious that Jodie travels with Cole. You have to control Cole to drive past the gate, and of course this will blow your cover. Maybe the shock effect will also wake Cole up. Otherwise, the guard will touch Cole and wake him up. So you pick the trunk. Down the road, Aiden stops the car and opens the trunk. Then he'll walk Cole somewhat safe. Toward the woods. Is he crazy? It'd get crazier for Jodie. She'll find the place she's looking for, Red House Bar. Doesn't sound like a place for a punk concert. Inside are three men who don't look like punk or indie fans. After ordering lemonade you have your last call. If you want to save Jodie for the future, leave. Being rebellious is one thing, being stupid is another. If you want the trophy, play the pool. No matter how well you play, Earl will well, attempt to rape Jodie. There you go. The Game of Thrones Moment you can avoid but is there. Jodie can take down possessed men and American soldiers by herself but she needs Aiden here. After blowing things in the bar, the men will get scared and running away, but Aiden has locked the door. You can kill them (some say they count toward UNCONTROLLABLE, some say they are not due to the nature of the scene - "PlayStation game rewards rape attempt scene") or letting them go. Belated reinforcements Nathan and Cole burst in and Jodie goes home traumatized. You'll get TOGETHER FOREVER trophy but it will block another trophy in another chapter. Still, it naturally counts toward the platinum trophy...so the imagined news item is...yeah. Q: Er, so, what happened with the invitation? A: It's never explained. Either Jodie got the place mixed up, or her new "friends" were that evil, or they had left, or worst, Jodie just imagined friends and invitation that never existed. __________ 6.14 Alone __________ 1998, DPA Lab. A short chapter where the Holmes are out of Jodie's life. If you want good Aiden, just do nothing for this chapter you'll get SORRY trophy. Or if you want evil Aiden, choke Philip Holmes. He won't die but he'll get mad at Jodie. You'll get NOT MY FATHER trophy and another count toward UNCONTROLLABLE. ___________ 6.15 Navajo ___________ 2012, Navajo Nation, southwestern United States. Such long way from snowy United States. The trucks refuse to pick Jodie and Aiden points her to a ranch by the road. Walk to the house and knock. The man will refuse entry but his dad lets you stay for the night. During the dinner, pick two items (you have choices of steak, corn, potato I guess and some wraps) and pour the drink. Finish by choosing another food from your dish and drink while talking about the ranch, the family, and yourself. The dog barks (uh oh) and the family finishes their dinner abruptly - no time even to wash the dishes and clean the table. Jay, the older son, will point you to an empty bedroom and tells you to stay inside until morning. You'll change into a loose t-shirt and panties. You can use the water bowl to wash your neck and see a line of ashes (in many cultures, to ward off evil spirits) under the window. Sleep (some say you can hear Aiden says or signs "good night" faintly). And no, it's not time-lapse GTA V style but Jodie has a dream that comes out of U2 or Tears for Fears' late 1980's video clips. Unfortunately it's still night when you wake up. You can easily go back to sleep or be a bad girl and ask Aiden to unlock the door and knocking on other doors, asking for explanation (they will ignore while Paul will ask you to be a nice girl). Be a badder girl and open the front door. Whoa, Navajo ghost. Everyone will pull you inside, luckily they don't tie you up or anything. In the morning you can remove the wooden window blockers and don't forget to wear your pants before you leave. And here's the Navajo, er, Dineh, ghost I'd like to call the Pervert Ghost, since he watches Jodie changing. Drink a cup of coffee (after these ordeals Starbucks will taste weird for Jodie) for some sips and open the front door. Paul likes you enough to ask you to help with the farm (hint, hint). It's Harvest Moon: Desert Farming! First, get some water for the sheep from the well and bring the bucket into the sheep pen. Then you're off to get hay from the barn. If you're tempted to check the book on the desk, Pervert Ghost will return. Use Aiden to get the hay and he'll bring down a stack. When all of this is over, Jodie will have a bright career with Amazon. Bring the heavy block (all those CIA fitness classes help) to the pen and angrily drop it close to Paul and the sheep, to the amusement of the sheep. Go out and sit next to Jay for your lunch. Oh Cory, you're sweet with your honesty. After lunch, check Jay on the stable. Anyway, sheep and horse were introduced by the Spanish to America - one big reason why native Americans were wiped out by European diseases was because they had no four legs cattle like sheep, pigs, and cows so their DNAs had no resistance against cattle- transmitted bacteria and viruses. So this family's ancestors lived as hunter gatherers, and now yeah, many Navajo farmers rear horses and sheep. Right now you don't need Aiden to tame Ashkii. Just walk slowwly toward him, slowly sweetly. Before he knows it you're patting his head. Now possess him with Aiden and take him to join other horses. After the sweaty day (how does Jodie stay pale?), Jodie is invited to take a shower near the barn. This is compulsory QD's shower scene...and Pervert Ghost just gets perverter. He writes down "Crown" on the wall. At night, again dinner finishes early. This time since Jay or Paul does not check, leave the house. My gosh look at that sand tsunami. Go to the rock in front of the house and hide. Aaah there they are. a sand demon fights five Dineh ghosts. Which one of you is the Pervert Ghost? The sand demon will blast Jodie's rock, and get ready for a hot minute of being chased around. Duck here, duck there. Even duck its claws. Eventually it will catch Jodie, so do your thing, Aiden. The ghosts will shield Jodie and all spirits will disappear. The next day, hop on Ashkii. Hold L2 to put Jodie's left foot and lift the controller up. If you do it wrong, Ashkii will complain and Jodie will apologize. Follow Jay (hold R2 to run, otherwise Ashkii will just trot) to the sheep. Jay will be friendlier here, and if you think he's a more decent guy than Ryan (at least he's a honest farmer, not an imperialist thug), be truthful to him. Phonecall from Paul will interrupt your story. Ride Ashkii to the windmill and use Aiden to blow away the weeds. There's an earthen cottage nearby and go in. Pervert Ghost is not here, btw. Touch the necklace and go out to be sent back to 1860s. Many say that the depicted burned village is not a Navajo village since they lived in earthen houses like the one you just visited, not tipis. Well, maybe it's an Apache camp. Pervert Ghost stands on your way and you have to avoid a rushing US Cavalry's horse. Jodie returns to 2012 and sees big writing of "Crown" with direction. Ride Ashkii past the natural tunnel, follow the road and you'll get to the ruins of a 19th century fort. Fort Crown. Some identify it as a Confederate States fort but as far I know, their troops never got into Nevada and New Mexico, and Anglo-Irish New Mexican militia like Kit Carson who harrassed the Dineh and other tribes allied with United States Army, not Confederate States'. Some objects in the fort reflect the sun, so channel the sword and the hat (there's supposedly a gun nearby but I couldn't find it). So that sand monster, Ye'iitsoh, massacred American soldiers inside the fort but it also flew to a barren tree to kill some Dineh. Follow the road (ride Ashkii and then I guess go to the east and then north, if Fort Crown's entrance faces south) and Jodie will remark when she finds the barren tree, the Devil's Fork. Aiden will quickly find a hotspot on the ground and dig it. Jodie will hold items buried there - a ritual mask, a skull, and an amulet/talisman and saw sand monster killed the Dineh. Aiden will find more hotspots and in the end Jodie collects four talisman - there's supposed to be another one. Check the last mask to find where it is. Go home and chuckle that the tree is too close to the ranch, heh. Rude Ye'iitsoh attacks even though it's daytime. Maybe he knows his jig is up and needs to kill the family now. Okay, time for another long term choice: Do you want Jodie to end up as a ghost or a human? As a ghost, talk to Shimasani immediately and Paul will die from his wound. Otherwise, go to Paul's bedroom (it's opened) and heal his wound with Aiden. Then speak to Shimasani. The baby in the vision was her ancestor. Feminist gamers are annoyed with her characterization as "the mute woman", and I think there's French arrogance here, the feeling that they understand and care better about "Third World" (it's a French term) people than the Anglais. Channel the talisman to Jodie to get the big picture. So the Dineh/Navajo shamans are not different to DPA scientists, and their ritual is just like DPA's condenser, with the same result. Now go outside and all the stuff you need are there - firewood, fire, and stick. Cory earns a slap on the head with his remark on grandma. The correct picture is the most basic one - choose X. The five points of the man, the pentagram (hey hey). Paul is still recovering (or dead) so you're one soul deficit. But there's Aiden. The portal's opened, Ye'iitsoh is pissed off, and the shamans return. Aiden needs to punch Ye'iitsoh's jaw three times with thumbsticks down and up. If you mess up, it won't be sucked into the portal and will just disappear. Cory, did your grandma tell you to call her by her first name instead of "Grandma"? So, funeral scene for Shimasani and Paul, if you didn't save him. If there's no funeral scene, you did it wrong and Ye'iitsoh is still on the run. Quit and restart from last checkpoint, please. The best outcome is for Shimasani to die (oh, no wonder the feminists think this game is overrated). After she's buried together with the Dineh scientists' stuff and remains, walk away but Jodie will turn around to see Pervert Ghost for the last time. Climb the rocks and you'll see interesting pictures inside the cave. Dineh shamans had made investigation on a case like Jodie and Aiden long before Nathan and DPA did. There was another Two Souls case ages ago here. O yeah, many figures here have horns. The horned man was a typical figure in ancient Europe, the alpha male. Dovish Christians, who wanted to replace the cocky pagan heroes with Jesus, identified the horned man as the devil. That's why the Spanish would have identified the Dineh as devil worshippers. Back to the ranch. If you did things right Jodie will have the option to kiss Jay. Kiss him on the lips and Paul is delighted - a potential daughter- in-law is secured. Motor girl Jodie will ride again with a good old American motorbike (Indian?). Uh, is that Shimasani's spirit or is this a goof? Doing well when chased by sand monster? NOT JUST SAND Trophy. Good. Kissed Jay? NEVER ALONE Trophy. Nice. Drew the correct pentagram and hit sand monsters back to the portal? MEDICINE GIRL Trophy. Yay. _______________ 6.16 Separation _______________ 2008, DPA Lab. Gosh, had I had a classmate like Jodie here I would have gone all out for her (and got shot down for being too clingy and pressy). Choose the music box to reveal a sensitive memory for Nathan. Nathan excuses himself. So Jodie can drink water, playing with a chair and pestering Cole (some of my friends wonder how I can stand dealing with teens for a living. Many avoid them like plague). It takes a while but Nathan will summon Jodie and tell her she's transferred to CIA, now. Feel free to insult both Nathan and bad-first-impression Ryan (er, real soldier doesn't talk like that, Ryan. L.J. Gibbs will not talk to a lady like that). OK, time to say goodbye to your apartment. Grab the bag first. You can take Bunny Gruff, a photo of Jodie with the Holmes (put it in or rip it, depends on your right stick direction), photo of Cole and Nathan (take or leave), shirt from the closet, soap and toothbrush from the bathroom, and picture of Jodie & Aiden from the front door's bulletin board. Congratulations, CIA, you just added one more American who does not finish high school. No wonder American secondary education is ranked low and your agents are dumb. _______________ 6.17 The Dinner _______________ 2010, CIA-funded apartment Two years later, after the embassy thing... OK, this might the creepiest dating mission with the exception of some Japanese dating sims I am not aware of. Ryan makes a move on Jodie and she giggles. Ryan is about 33 years old now and according to the Bro Code, he has no right to chase a twenty year old like Jodie (you hear that, Quagmire?). Aiden has been that mad since he read Ryan's e-mail (Ryan dude, you ask a co-worker out through E-MAIL?) and both souls are fighting - Jodie with her f bombs and Aiden with his passive super aggresive stance. Or maybe Ryan has this super evil play designed to enter the girl's house on first date. 1. Send an e-mail knowing she won't read it. 2. Call her one hour before your proposed date, saying you're waiting at the restaurant and you have this kickass wine 3. As she apologizes, move the dinner to her house. 4. Who cares if she orders pizza? You have the kickass wine. 5. You have a one-night housewife. Gentlemen, The Housewife play. You have two options here. With CASUAL GIRL, Aiden's sandbagging tactics won't work since you take it easy. With the PERFECT LOVER, boy you'll think he's about to kill Jodie. OK, going with the CASUAL GIRL then? Don't really bother with goods strewn around, go to the kitchen, open the cook book, and order the pizza, take shower (yes, yes, we'll get into that), and choose the Cool Wardrobe, and watch TV. Boxing instead of sitcom. Boxing instead of MMA. PERFECT LOVER? OK, first, kick the video games boxes and controllers (euh, won't Jodie damage them?) under, put the books back, and throw the trash into the bin in the kitchen. Got that? Open your bedroom and pick the jeans and other dirty clothes to the laundry basket in the bathroom. Now, shower or no shower. Some say that shower is a must (maybe they just make this up) while others say it's optional. I've proven it's optional. Now I'm confused which one is creepier: Aiden writing "You don't need him you have me" (imagine if you're Jodie's brother or her male BFF and text her that one hour before her date, what she will think of you); or people make a fuzz of debugging the game, showing xxx angles of Jodie's body in the shower, and complaining that Ellen Page's body is not like that. After shower, you may choose between Cool (that Separation dress, which might bring back the memory of Jodie telling Ryan to piss off), the Elegant dress which brings back memory of bleeding nose and two-weeks torture risk in Saudi Arabia (such a lovely place), or Ellen Page's signature Sexy dress - tight white shirts and blue jeans. Looks conventional until you notice the panty rim. Now to the important part of cooking: Choose between Asian Beef or Curry Chicken Oven. Which sitcom hostess chooses an oven dish less than one hour before the guest comes? Oh Aiden, I know you want to help, but don't point out the knife like that. I'd go with Asian beef. Which sounds more enticing for many (not just Westerners) than the proper "Chinese beef" (which brings the image of sticky, soggy, and MSG-laden take away). Regarding Asian Beef, yes, add ginger but you don't need salt and pepper. I want to avoid her foolishness of adding sake (oh ok, it's Asian Beef) into the hot wok but oh well. Knock on the door. If you ordered pizza, that might be it. But if you open the door and it's empty, don't go out. Aiden does it ugly. And boy it will get messy if you are lured out. He will lock out the door. Jodie will force open the door with her own telekinesis power, bloody nose in the process. Aiden will also mess up the dinner chairs and snuff out the dining candles (O yeah, set the dinner table too, yeah?). The ordeal's over and Ryan comes in. Aiden will act out again in the kitchen. Go to the coffee table to open and pour the wine. You're automatically in control of Aiden and is tempted to terrorize Ryan. Want to finish the UNCONTROLLABLE? Scare Ryan out with everything at your disposal, from here to bed, uh, dinner time, until he leaves. Want to lose Jodie's virginity (well she's over 18)? Behave yourself as Aiden. Just watch there, be the deaf goat or the lampstand as we say here, as Ryan tells his life story. Rough childhood and ex-wife and all. Think Ryan is not right for Jodie? Reject his kiss and he will leave. Jodie will cry but make peace with Aiden. OR Go on with the happy ending option (hey, girls are also players), kiss Ryan and you two will be on bed. Last call here, Aiden. Last call. Hey wait, Jodie suddenly being scared and breaks down? Aaah...you have the TOGETHER FOREVER on your record. Too bad. You might want to redo the game from Like Other Girls to change Jodie's life history. Otherwise, the screen goes black and Jodie arises from the bed in underwear (just like in network TV), goes to the bathroom and thanks Aiden. For putting up with the unmentionable sex act - must be worse than listening to your room mate doing it - and your room mate is your sibling or your opposite sex BFF. __________________ 6.18 Night Session __________________ 1999, DPA Lab. Let's get horrified again. But is not as bad as My Imaginary Friend. Jodie is sleepy. Go to Nathan and have him agreed to read bedtime story. Oh no, another dark room. Jodie hates dark rooms. Take the book...and. Sweet Baby Jesus. Useless Nathan and Cole did not realize anything wrong. Ah uh, the ghosts are around you again, but maybe because they look familiar, they are not that scary. Oh no, Willem Dafoe's breaking apart. This won't end good. ________________ 6.19 The Mission ________________ 2011, Somalia. Eighteen years ago, nineteen American finest warriors sacrificed their lives for the sake of the people of Somalia in a brave effort to bring into justice individuals who used food as a weapon of attrition. This year, we bet our chance on a freaky girl. Hey, DEVGRU's gotta cap bin Laden you know. Seriously CIA? You really don't have anyone to replace Frank Woods and Jason Hudson? Or Michael Westen? You are really resorted to use people like Niko Bellic and Jodie Holmes? OK then. Of course, you hardly see CIA Special Activities Division operatives kissing each other before mission. Bro. So canonically Jodie kissed and did more with Ryan in The Dinner. You don't have to swim at all, and Jodie is automatically on the beach. It's too pedantic and tiring for both of us to describe how Jodie should move point to point, so just remember these three things: 1. Make a habit of using Aiden as a scout. More discreet and more lethal than Metal Gear MK.II/III. If a Somali militia has blue aura, that means Aiden cannot possess or choke him. Jodie will either avoid them or hide behind a cover and take them down, just like in Welcome to CIA. If the militia has red aura, choke him to death (the rising red aura is, er, his gone soul :(). If he has orange aura, that's the most beautiful - possess and own. 2. This game won't be as hard as Metal Gear Solid, so you'll get clearer idea where to hide and what to do now. You have three waypoints - the hotel, then a cathedral, and then a mosque tower. In fact your path is almost a giveaway here. 3. You've got to choke to kill here. Don't release the pressure before since the surviving militia or his mate may raise alarm. Here we go. If Jodie is as good as Snake or Sam Fisher, you'll get a trophy. From the beach, move between covers until you get close to the lone militia and take him down. There's someone by the stair, switch to Aiden and tango down (ha, no wonder CIA wants her). Move along the path, take every cover, and scout as Aiden. Remember, if the militia is blue, then Aiden can't take him. If the militia are numerous, then you have to avoid them rather than sneaking on them. This girl can knock out or kill African guys who had held AK-47s before their puberty. If as Aiden you see blue dot on a barrel, then don't bang it immediately, but get Jodie to the nearest cover between the barrel and the militia and then bang the barrel as a bait. Remember, Square for takedown cutscene. You'll get into the hotel only to find it deserted. Channel the body and the objects. Back to cover and take until you reach another building. Enter and channel. Cross the street and walk across the ruined church. Jump down and uh, you'll have a little boy pointing AK-47 at you. Heal his gun wounds like Jesus (anyway, yeah, Jesus, how come many nations in Africa keep killing each other for hundreds of years? Is Hobbes right?) and his enemies will come. Seems like Al Shabab - Al Qaeda Somalia. Remember your childhood snowfight? L1 to get your gun and R1 to shoot. And Aiden has something that will make DEVGRU jealous - he can just collapse the tango's covering wall, lol. If it's too hot for Jodie, switch to Aiden for artillery/sniper support. But if she complains the range's too far, then she has to move to a new cover. And uh, you'll get a brutal Fist Time fight against a guy in machete. Don't mess with the white girl, dog. It's already sunrise but it seems many people forgo their sleeps and choose to shoot around. Follow Salim around, use Aiden Shield at one occasion to impress Salim further. Now a showcase on how evil Jodie and Aiden can be (it's for the security of United States of America and her allies and to help the people of Somalia): Possess the guy, stab his buddy and the driver (Oh the humanity) and drive. Now keep your head low. R1 does not do much, since the truck movement is kinda automatic. Mike Toreno is correct, anyway: Ganton, Los Santos has nothing to a Third World warzone. Eventually they'll bump into a road block and Aiden steps on the gas. Sorry Jo, no other choice. The militias will attempt to board your pickup, so it's Cavalry, sorry, Agent Melinda May time. So uh, how did Jodie and Salim escape the burning truck? Aiden Shield, maybe. Cover and take down on your way to the compound. You can't enter it, so the game prompts you to sneak into that holed building. What about this eh? Psych sniping. No guard on the second floor (there's bonus orb in the ammo room) but there's Salim. Predictable. First you have to pinpoint Charrief in the main hall. Then go to the court yard. Kill the guy with the red aura. Now, two guys with orange aura. Pick the Rick Ross wannabe since it's evident he's an officer, not a mere guard. You can pick the AK from the dead soldier or from the rear of another truck behind it (dude on this second truck won't notice the dead guard. Too much qat in the morning). Step inside and bang bang. Dumb CIA, however, is not happy with this neat murder. They demand Jodie to confirm the kill (come on, you guys don't even do that with drone!). Break the door (not the main gate) for Jodie and she'll take the dead picture of Charrief with a camouflaged digital camera (haha, army chic). Salim will cry for his dad and wants to shoot you. No way Salim, I have Aiden Shield, remember? Just leave, don't bother touching Salim. Hey, his dad was not a nice guy. Go to the street and whoa, Angry Mob is out to lynch you! CIA has calculated this, hasn't they? Run/limp to the building across the street and open the door. Pick your radio instead your gun and call for extraction. Use Aiden and bring down the ladder. Climb up and more bodies will litter the streets and concretes of the ruined city (not necessarily Mogadishu). Good job Jodie, now Salim will grow up with a mission to destroy America, like Raul Menendez. What happens afterward also happened to Jason Bourne, and he was tasked to kill a completely bad man (what a wuss, cancelled that shot just because he saw his daughter). I understand that Jodie is so mad with the "no backup" and kill confirmation policy, but it's just bad writing by David Cage. Frankly, that democratically elected president was a warlord to the morning of his death. More importantly, NO world leader will condemn the assassination of President of Somalia. Fact. Especially by his lieutenant. They just won't bother. Anyway Jodie, maybe the order did not come from some four star f generals. Maybe it came from the President of United States of America. Yes he can. So how was your stealth skill? It's good if you get the STEALTH MASTER trophy. Otherwise try this level again next time. ________________ 6.20 Old Friends ________________ Autumn 2014, an American city. Jodie meets Cole, seems that she initiated the contact. We learn the identities of Jodie's real parents (heart attack...right...assisted heart attack maybe). __________ 6.21 Norah __________ Autumn 2014, DPA Psych...Psychia...Mental Hospital Ask nice. Ask nice with Aiden by possessing the receptionist and search for Norah Gray and press the elevator button. Passing the security guard: He's quick to recover the door button so distract him by shutting down the PC. He'll kneel, so first pause the security monitor and press the door switch. The nurse is too far for Jodie to reach so bang some chairs and tables. He'll wake up, and possess him when he's in the cafeteria. Then get his ID card conveniently put on the card panel. Aiden can knock the cameras although failure to do so won't raise alarm. Cole will point up the door. Enter and talk with Norah. Channel her to see that DPA/CIA is not only dumb, they are evil. Now, destroy the dark aura surrounding Norah. After that, you have two long term choices: SAVED ALL option: Leave the room. Just walk to the door and choose Leave. A BETTER WORLD option: Euthanasia. Kill Norah with Aiden to stop her suffering. SAVED ALL/A BETTER WORLD tallies: Jimmy, Walter, Paul, and now Norah. OK Cole. Are you related to Eric Foreman? _____________ 6.22 Briefing _____________ 2014, DPA Headquarters. Nice office, man. The snow globe on the table tells you that it's Nathan's office. Er, if CIA didn't want to take a chance with Aiden, couldn't they use just Taser instead of rifle butt? Oh look, it's Steve Austin and John Cho again. And Mr. Liar. _____________________ 6.23 Dragon's Hideout _____________________ November 2014, People's Republic of China [Republic of Kaziristan - my lawyer] Kaziristan is a Central Asian state. Its military technology can keep up with America's. Kaziristan soldiers shave properly, have light skin tones and small eyes, and loves the red dragon motif. Their language sounds like Chinese than Turkic. A Kaziristan village has red lanterns and the winter there is severely snowy. Aiden leads the Special Activities Division unit finding a warm house. Light the fire with Aiden. Ah, the French and their stereotypes of American soldiers. Talk to Ryan and drink the warm...coffee? Whoopsie, the drink fills Jodie's bladder full. It's orange juice then. Cross the street and find a spot by the abandoned building. Aaah, so that's why Jodie has to do it. No Ryan, they did not spot Jodie. They spotted those skis you guys left outside! PS: It's not your baby, Ryan. It's Scott Pilgrim's. Just walk straight until you reach the secret hangar. Metal Gear Aiden will enter the hangar. When Jodie orders him to take them out, possess the orange soldier. Don't worry about the gun, he has one. Walk to the soldier lying prone by the sub. One. The gunshot will alert another soldier inside the shack but he will investigate without getting his gun ready (ah peasant soldier). Bang. Then walk the puppet to the control room to open the door. Nick will kill him while Aiden is still in control, apparently it's painful for Jodie. Walk to the dead soldiers by the sub to use their clothes. Er, Jo, I know that we Chinese [They are Kaziris - my lawyer] are small, but not as small as you are so the clothes might not fit. Ryan joins in the commie cosplay (Dumb. Nick is a better choice as a Chinese [Kaziri - my lawyer] soldier). Personally I think he's just thinking of doing it in a sub with Jodie. Welcome to the Life Aquatic with Jodie Holmes. Left stick for throttle, right stick for steering (up, down, left, right). Follow the contour map to avoid rocking the rocks. The Chinese [Kaziris - my lawyer] are so both smart and devious they have built an underwater base complete with the red dragon emblem. Hey look, this game has a torture scene too! Personally, he can do what he likes with Ryan. I just don't care. You should not too. Just do something else while waiting. Now he's onto you. Just don't press X, simple. Pssttt...press X for a Trophy. AGENT blah blah trophy. Don't press anything for a Trophy. AN EYE FOR AN EYE trophy. Jesus Jodie, just because Ryan lied to you and let you potentially eaten alive by Arabs and Somalis you let him losing an eye? Remind me to never fight with you. Flashback. Leave the submarine. Nice Ryan, see how stand out you are? In a real Central Asian nation, Ryan still has the chance to blend in but not here. No, the reason that he's Eurasian is not good enough since Eurasian Chi... Kaziris don't become soldiers (I just know. I'm an expert in Kaziri culture and society. Their women are addicted to iPhone 5S and Hermes handbags). Aiden notices that the commander has orange aura. Possess him and Jodie and Ryan may tag behind him. ALMOST TOO EASY Trophy. Just walk straight... and straight...and uh, what does that black liquid field do again? It's a ghost trap! Cunning Kaziri spies must have stolen the technology from the Ghostbusters and developed it into something better. Dumb Ryan is too slow to disarm the confused commander. And kids, that's how I and Uncle Ryan got captured and tortured. Now to Aiden. He has the ability to decipher complicated Kaziri characters into cute symbols all of us can understand. Fly to the orange painted hall. Go inside armory and kill the soldier. Go to control room. Possess the soldier. Oopsie, can't touch this, homeboy. Go away. Follow the confused soldier outside to possess him again. Poor you. Get into the armory room, grab the AK, and go back to the control room. Ratatata. Aiden, what have you done. Fly toward Jodie (follow the purple rope) and heal her. Punch the steel door twice. Then punch Ryan's cell door twice again. Go to a nearby room to retrieve the explosive. Aiden, choke that interrogator. Jodie, pick up the explosives. Now walk to the red painted hall to find a room with a pool. Jodie will wear a diving suit (yay) and also a Kaziri armor suit (stolen from Stark Industries). Walk underwater toward the Kazari Condenser. Uh, why do the entities ignore Jodie? We can attribute it on the armor suit, but they also ignored Jodie upstairs, so I think I have an explanation. Chinese dudes don't dig white chicks. [Kazi...whatever - my lawyer] Get to the three green tubes to plant the explosives and find the path back to the catwalk. BIG FISH IS CHASING YOU! Press X to simulate Jodie running. Once you're above the water, it won't chase you again. Now, a life lesson. You. Don't. Ruin. An Asian. Science Project. Fist Time for a brutal fight with the commander. Actually I think finally we see the defeat of Jodie...which means Kaziri soldiers are better fighters than general American police and CIA trainers. Thank you big fish. Run toward the imploding base, duck here and there, button mashes, and you'll reach the submarine pen. Then, swim upward. Hey, you do better than Tombstone in Battlefield 4. Ryan brings up romance again. Just answer with your real feeling for him. ______________ 6.24 Hauntings ______________ 1999, DPA Lab. Child Jodie=ghost sighting. Roll left, roll right, see ghost. Get up and follow Laura. OK, you standing there in the hallway, that's bit scary. Follow her until you reach Nathan's office. Channel his wife and daughter. Unlike Stan, however, he's not consoled. It may work for William H. Macy but not Willem Dafoe. ______________ 6.25 Black Sun ______________ November 2014, Pentagon, Washington DC. General McGarth, the stereotypical war crazy general gloats over American victory over Kaziristan in ghost technology. Jodie leaves the conference and meets Ryan Fury. Just...be nice now to him. Your boyfriend options are limited to either him or Jay now. Just accept and kiss and so. Go underground to claim your freedom from Nathan. That one last thing, however, is the mother of all last thing annoyances. OK, when people tell us to let go, to let our dearly departed leave in peace, they mean it. Channel Nathan but he won't accept what Helen pleas. Try to stay nice to him and leave the office. Go back to the elevator. NOT RIFLE BUTT STROKE AGAIN! Who do you think Jodie is, Tintin? It seems weird how Jodie's tied up. McGarth says something not nice about Jodie's mom. Ooooh, you're sooo gonna get it. As Aiden, unplug the drug infusion but he cannot release Jodie. You need the remaining of the good guys. Go up...where are they? Cole and Ryan are in the small corner office. You have to attract their attention by banging everything possible. Now how to lead them to Jodie? find the nearest thing to the purple line and rock it. Cole and Ryan will follow. Take them to the elevator. In the Basement 4 level, you have to outwit the security guard. Distract him and manipulate the computer screen to enter Cole's name into the database. Now back to guide them to Jodie. Flick the lights and tap the windows to the end of the purple line. Nathan has lost it completely. Fist Time to avoid the demons' destruction to get into the lab. Ryan leaves McGarth to be consumed by the demons and now you get to wear something really cool. Here's your final exam. First, covering. At the last hurdle, you have to hide from the demon. Otherwise, mash X to run like hell (hell, you're in hell). Regardless, Cole is badly hurt. DECISION TIME! A BETTER WORLD Option. Abandon and he'll die. SAVED ALL Option. Drag him with Ryan to the elevator (O) and switch to Aiden as soon as possible. Heal his wounds and he'll survive. Made your choice? Your next final exam is Fist Time, particularly the evading skill. Just to know, you can die permanently here (meaning unlike previous chapters, you'll get the worst ending if you don't pass the test). Walk past the soul storms with all the upper middle class souls lamenting their regrets. Well, then we have to move past our past regrets and try to live without further regrets then. Every day. A soul distracts Jodie (er, are you Susan Holmes?) and she loses Ryan. Soon she'll approach Nathan. FINAL DECISION TIME. A BETTER WORLD Option: Be rude to Nathan (Blame and Cold). He'll get angry and is going to shoot Jodie. Ryan will jump the bullet and dies. Nathan will be killed either by Aiden or by Ryan. SAVED ALL Option: Reason with Nathan. [] and X. In any case, Nathan will die and reunites with his family. Good for him. FINAL TEST. Avoid the ghost attacks. If you want to avoid the worst ending, pass this one. Good luck. Now you walk the final mile. Demons from the ground will try to drag you down, keep on walking with X and watch out when you have to press O. Don't let them pull you down. At the same time, demons inside Jodie will remind her of the past evil characters - Philip Holmes, the DPA brats, etc. OK, the Black Sun is indeed the Black Sun. See Glossary to understand what I'm talking about. You get reunited with 24 year old Aiden, naked and bald. Just think what male Ellen Page would look like. Bye Aiden. There's your final option. Dead or alive. Live in heaven with Shimasani and other people you've cruelly let to die. Or choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a smart television, choose washing machines, cars, smartphone plan and e-reader. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Remember kids, heaven is white and the world is black. A lot of thropies here: TOGETHER TILL THE END: Complete the game from start to finish using two controllers. SAVED ALL: Saved Walter, Jimmy, Paul, Norah, Cole, Ryan, and Choose Life. A BETTER WORLD: Let those characters die and Choose Beyond. THE END: Reach the gap between heaven and earth. CHOSE AFTERLIFE: Choose to live as a spirit in Infraworld. CHOSE LIFE: Return to our messed-up and beautiful world. CONVINCE DAWKINS: Reason with Nathan, saving Ryan in the process. This is a good joke - can you convince Richard Dawkins that there is God? BLACK SUN DOWN: Pass the last challenge and shut down the Black Sun. _____________ 6.26 Epilogue _____________ 2015, Canada (hey, why not) and United States. Worst ending first: If you could not avoid the ghost attacks before reaching Black Sun, Jodie will become a lost soul. BEYOND: For some reason you're not bff again with Aiden. What a put down, hey? But now you're the new Aiden. And Zoey will become the new Jodie. The living endings: Jodie lives in the woods just like Logan. OK Mr. Bunny, you're innocent. She's ready to return to the city and has several options: You can live alone, or with one of the boys: Jay or Ryan. Or with the nice people from Homeless and see toddler Zoey. First you have to dump Ryan unless you choose to live with him. And oh, Aiden is still around in most cases. Living with the street crew seems like the best option since you'll face a darker B:2S sequel with Zoey and possibly Aiden rather than alone with Aiden. Zoey might have her own wingman. For maximum destruction of the SWAT team, you have to destroy these things: a. Gas Station: Loose the hoes, possess the officer and shoot at the fuel. b. Gun Store: Locate the shop with "Hunting Cabin" sign, locate the truck
in front of it. Possess the driver and ram the truck into the store. c. Church: Hit the church's tower twice. d. Helicopter: Open the theater's door for Jodie. The helicopter will show up. Walk past the ground floor and press the elevator. 2. Go down and remove the blocking block. The elevator will go up. 3. Channel the dead scientist. If you want a trophy, you have to channel eight bodies. 4. Open the door. The soldier is not channel-able. 5. Nor is the scientist. Use Aiden to get past the door. Note that the dead scientist may try to float behind you, but if you use Aiden and turn around as Aiden or Jodie to face him, his body returns to prone. A goof, I guess. 6. Find the door switch on the security desk to open the door for Jodie. 7. Channel the dead security guard. 2/8 8. Find another scientist in the servers' room. 3/8 9. As Aiden, push the servers and open the duct's trap door. Crawl inside as Jodie to get past the fire. 10. Channel another scientist. 4/8. 11. Break the glass wall with tables and chairs using Aiden. 12. Channel two bodies around, including a fireman's. 6/8. 13. Fetch the extinguisher as Aiden and put down the fire as Jodie. 14. Talk to the scientist and then fight his possessed body (come on, you know that's gonna happen). This is really brutal. 15. Channel the soldier. 7/8. 16. The demons have set traps for Jodie in this room. Quick Time Events with right stick to avoid them. 17. Get into the end of the icy hall. The keycard is in the body of the scientist's in the corner of the right hand room. Hold X to grab it. 18. Escape the zombies and run to the door. As Aiden, you have to pop their heads to protect Jodie. Pull the sticks down and release. Quick. 19. Channel the last scientist here. 8/8. 20. As Jodie, run through the catwalks and ledges. The game will drive you to find the path. Avoid entities as possible. If Jodie screams "Help me, Aiden!" you'll switch to Aiden quickly. Blast the demons with the sticks and pull those who grab Jodie. 21. Right thumbstick, controller motion sensor, and action buttons will simulate Jodie's movements. PORTAL SHUTDOWN is achieved. It's important to do the battle against the zombies right in the icy hall to qualify for this trophy. If you manage to channel the eight bodies here, you'll get CHANNELING MASTER trophy. _____________ 7.10 HOMELESS _____________ Jodie's Age: 21 1. A long and tiring chapter. Get up, walk to a payphone, and walk until Jodie is collapsed. 2. You can shoo the demons but you have to draw attention of the homeless three times by nudging the shopping cart, his body, and the garbage container. 3. Talk to Stan the man. You can channel's the photo - he wouldn't mind. 4. You can also talk to the other homeless, just to introduce yourself. 5. DO NOT interact with the knife or the ledge. QD has inserted unnecessary cutscenes where Jodie thinks of killing herself. Not nice, QD. 6. Walk outside to the path leading to the street. Stan will catch up with you. 7. Cross the street and keep walking until you reach the homeless with guitar. 8. Grab the guitar and start singing. The song is Beck's "Lost Cause". Keep singing until the song is over. Ellen Page sings this song herself and at least held the guitar and made the chords during the shooting. 9. Return to Stan. MONEY TO EAT Trophy. 10. Fight the thugs using Jodie. You don't need Aiden since Jodie knows street fighting. 11. Talk with the homeless over dinner. Check Tuesday's baby, channel Jimmy, and channel Stan to get MIRACLES trophy. 12. Wake up and approach Tuesday. 13. Follow Stan to the supermarket. Switch to Aiden and hit the main gate switch by the gate. 14. Hold on. Return to Aiden and turn off the camera above the door. SMART THIEF Trophy. 15. Wait outside then follow Stan and Jimmy. Enter the building through the window space. 16. Sorry Aiden, you're also ousted. Turn on the heater, then prepare the clothes and the scissors, and remove Tuesday's pants. 17. Use all options. 18. Cut the umbilical cord. Jodie is supposed to clamp it first but she went to military school, not medical school. Luckily Zoey will grow up healthy. 19. Wake up and wake up Stan across the hall. 20. You have two long term choices. Do you want to send as many people as possible to the afterlife (A BETTER WORLD Option) or do you want to save them (SAVED ALL Option)? 21. After you've made the choice, you can let Walter and Jimmy die in the fire or save them with Aiden (free Walter from his room and possess Jumping Jimmy). 22. Get out of the window and break the next window with action buttons. Tuesday and Zoey cannot die. 23. How do you like to be hospitalized? OK, just stay inside to dying from carbon inhalation. If you are able to reach the top floor to find a hole and jumping below, the thugs will get you. 24. Move inside the TVs to see your past and future. 25. Remove the IV needle and check objects around the room to see that the homeless gang are doing fine now. The Origami Killer case might also have been solved (they are happening at the same time, maybe in the same city). 26. Try to leave the room. Go back in and escape through the window. ________________ 7.11 First Night ________________ Jodie's Age: 8 1. Grab pajamas from the bag and go to the bathroom. 2. Grab bunny and flashlight from the bag and try to sleep. 3. Turn on the flashlight. Nice, Aiden. But bit creepy. 4. As Aiden, check the living room and Cole. 5. Uh oh. Quickly get back to the monitor room (through the mirror in the living room) and shake the chair to wake Cole up. 6. Destroy the demons. ENTITIES APPRENTICE Trophy. _____________________ 7.12 Like Other Girls _____________________ Jodie's Age: 16 If you want to collect all trophies, you have to play this level two times. 1. Sob on the couch. Walk to the mirror to being rude at Cole. 2. Sob on the bed, jam the electric guitar in the living room. 3. As Aiden, pointlessly destroy things you could have used to fill your Saturday night. 4. Possess Cole and get him to open the door to Jodie's apartment and to the lab's hall. 5. Walk to the gate and get the ID card from Cole. 6. If you want to save Jodie's from a major trauma later in her life, if you want to feel less disgusted at yourself, and if you want Jodie to lose her virginity years later (hey, she's still 16 here), choose anything but Speak. Eventually the guard will wake up Cole and the level ends. 7. Otherwise, choose Speak (X). You'll get away with Cole. 8. Tell Cole to unlock his car. Hide in the trunk since the guards have got order to not let Jodie leave the facility. 9. Open the trunk and walk Cole to the woods. Jodie and Aiden, you're evil. How can you be sure there are no predators in the woods? 10. Surely Jodie is in the wrong place. You can still leave and save Jodie. 11. The die is cast if you play billiard. No matter how you play or respond, it's Law and Order SVU. 12. Kill the men or spare them by unlocking the door. TOGETHER FOREVER Trophy. This outcome does generate controversy, at least among female gamers. __________ 7.13 Alone __________ Jodie's Age: 8 1. If you are for UNCONTROLLABLE Trophy, choke Phillip Holmes. 5/6. Also for NOT MY FATHER Trophy. 2. Otherwise, just wait for the Holmes to leave. SORRY Trophy. ___________ 7.14 Navajo ___________ Jodie's Age: 22 1. Asking for a ride won't do it. Walk until Jodie finds a stone to sit. 2. Approach the house and knock. 3. Choose two food and eat. Pour the drink, eat once more, and drink. 4. Change your top. You can wash your neck and see the ashes to ward off evil spirits. Sleep. 5. Thought it was GTA V, did you? You can go back to sleep or unlock the door with Aiden. 6. Either go back to your room (harder to find it) or open the front door. Gasp. 7. Don't forget to wear pants first before stepping out. Yeah, I call him the Pervert Ghost. There should be meme of Pervert Ghost standing in inappropriate places. 8. Have some coffee and step out. 9. Fill the bucket and bring it to the sheep pen. 10. Walk to the barn. Check the book on desk if you like ghost standing behind you. Otherwise drop a stack of hay with Aiden. 11. Bring it back to Paul. 12. Ask Jay the most relevant questions. 13. Walk toward the horse slooowwwlllyyy. This way he has no chance to make a scene. 14. Possess and walk the horse into the stable. 15. Mandatory shower scene. You pervert, you Pervert Ghost. 16. Go out since Paul and Jay don't check on you. Go to the stone in front of the house. 17. Avoid the monster's attacks. Use Aiden Shield to free Jodie. NOT JUST SAND if you receive less than three hits. 18. Ride Ashkii by holding L2 (I guess) and lift the controller. 19. Hold R2 to follow Jay. 20. Be truthful to Jay. He's a potential boyfriend. 21. Ride to the windmill and remove the weeds as Aiden. 22. Enter the earthen house and hold the necklace. 23. Go out. At the end of the scene you have to avoid a rushing horse. 24. Ride to the natural tunnel (anyone knows what Southwestern Americans call it?) and eventually you'll reach the fort. 25. Walk inside, in a straight line you'll find two objects. Channel them. 26. Ride again to search for the tree. Turn left and then left I guess. 27. Dig a hotspot as Aiden and then touch the ritual objects. 28. Ride back to the house. 29. If you want to kill many people, go straight to Shimasani. 30. If you want to save everyone, go to Paul and heal him. 31. Then talk to Shimasani. Channel the talisman. 32. Go out and grab the ritual objects - firewood, oil, and stick. 33. The correct pattern is the simplest one - X. Yes, a pentagram is supposed to represent a man. 34. Hold the talisman as Aiden. 35. Now as Aiden, you have to punch the sand monster three times on his jaw. Otherwise he'll escape. 36. If you did it right, there's a funeral scene. MEDICINE GIRL Trophy. If not, then you did it wrong and the monster is still on the run. 37. Climb the rocks to get into the cave. 38. You may kiss Jay now. NOT ALONE TROPHY. _______________ 7.15 Separation _______________ Jodie's Age: 18 1. Pick the music box to trigger a sensitive memory for Nathan. 2. Wait inside the lab. Drink water, sit the wrong way on the chair, pester Cole. 3. Wait until Nathan calls you. Feel free to abuse both him and Ryan. 4. Open your bag and insert Bunny, photos (or you can leave them), soaps, clothes, and drawing of Jodie and Aiden. _______________ 7.16 The Dinner _______________ Jodie's Age: 20 Welcome to one of scariest dating games ever invented. Unless you know some scary Japanese dating sim. 1. Wait for Jodie's tirades against Aiden. 2. CASUAL GIRL or PERFECT LOVER? 3. For CASUAL GIRL, order pizza, wear the Cool dress (yes, please don't do the dinner just in panties. Jodie is not that cheap), watch the boring boxing match. Jodie may also do shower (oh you've expected it, haven't you?) 4. For PERFECT LOVER, clean the living room, clean the bed, cook (Asian Beef is my preference), and pick Sexy or Elegant clothes. Shower is proven optional. Finally, set the table. 5. If the door is knocked and no one is outside, watch out. It's Aiden's trap. 6. Ryan's here? Go to the kitchen and get the cork. Return to the living room's sofa and pour the wine. 7. The game tempts you to scare Ryan. If you're for UNCONTROLLABLE, keep on bullying Ryan until he leaves. 8. Agree to kiss Ryan meaning sleeping with him. Refuse to end the chapter early. 9. Final temptation as Aiden. Which trophy do you want? 10. Jodie breaks down? It means you played billiard. Poor you. Go back to Like Other Girls to change history. 11. Otherwise it's WooHoo. IN LOVE WITH RYAN Trophy. ___________________ 7. 17 Night Session ___________________ Jodie's Age: 8 Little Jodie sees a lot of dead people. 1. Leave the TV and talk to Nathan. 2. Walk to the office, turn on the light. Thriller time. 3. Yep. 4. Yes. _________________ 7. 18 The Mission _________________ Jodie's Age: 21 CIA is nuts. 1. Make a habit of using Aiden as a scout. If the militia has blue aura, Aiden cannot hurt him. Jodie has to avoid him or sneak on him and take him down. 2. Make your way to the stairs. The militia upstairs has red aura. Choke him and exclaim "Tango down!". 3. Repeat. Check every quarter with Aiden and then move forward. Cover to cover. 4. Remember, it's like Welcome to CIA. If you see a barrel, don't bang it outright but use it to distract the militia so Jodie can take him down. 5. Eventually you reach the hotel. Clean it from any militia and reach the table upstairs. Channel everything. 6. More covering, taking down, avoiding, choking, possessing. You'll do fine. The Somalians are not. 7. You'll reach another building. Enter and channel the body and the papers. 8. Across the building is the cathedral. It's deserted. Walk across and jump down. 9. Heal Salim, the kid with AK-47 (Sweet Lord). 10. Remember childhood's snowball fight? L1 to load, R1 to shoot. Aiden is particularly deadly here. Switch to him to collapse wall on the tangos, choke them etc. If Jodie complains it's too far, switch back to her and move to the next cover. 11. Another deadly duel against an Al-Shabab terrorist. Don't mess with the white girl. 12. Follow Salim. Activate Aiden Shield after you've waited for the armor convoy to pass. 13. The cruelest possession of all. Suburbia terror is nothing to this. 14. Stay low, drive slowly homie. 15. I think eventually you have to gas past the checkpoint. 16. Ever wanted to become Agent Melinda May? 17. Make your way into the front of the compound. Look for the holed building on the left for your sniping hole. Your rifle is Aiden. 18. Fly into the compound and locate the target in the main hall. 19. Fly outside, kill the guard with red aura by the pickup truck. 20. Possess the bald officer sitting with other soldiers outside. Grab an AK from the dead soldier. There's another rifle nearby the truck behind it. 21. Go in and kill. 22. Open the side door (not the main gate) for Jodie. 23. Activate Aiden Shield. Don't bother touching Salim. Just leave. 24. Limp to a house across the street. Open the door. 25. Grab your radio, not gun. 26. Switch to Aiden and lower the ladder. 27. Climb up and you're safe. ________________________ 7.19 Old Friends & Norah ________________________ Jodie's Age: 24 1. Choose anything you want to know about your parents. 2. Ask the receptionist. Switch to Aiden and possess him. 3. Activate Aiden. The guard is quick to recover the door button so you have to be smarter. Shut down his PC, then pause the security monitor and press the door switch. 4. Sneak past him. Back to Aiden. 5. Bang the chairs and tables until the nurse wakes up and enters the dining room. 6. Possess him and open the security door. 7. Grab his ID card and enter the hall. 8. You may damage the cameras as Aiden. 9. Cole will call Jodie. Enter Room 43. 10. Approach Mom and try to get her reaction. 11. Destroy dark auras surrounding her. 12. If you want A BETTER WORLD Trophy, approaches her again and take the decision to end her suffering. 13. Otherwise, just leave the room. So heartbreaking but you've added another SAVED ALL item. _______________________________ 7.20 Briefing/Dragon's Haunting _______________________________ Jodie's Age: 24 1. Tour the office and then open the main door to continue. 2. Talk whatever you wish. 3. As Aiden, scout forward until you find a house. 4. Enter the house. As Aiden, turn on the fire. QD, they are American spec ops, not Jimmy de Santa. 5. Talk to Ryan and drink from the flask. Maybe orange juice, the drink Ellen Page carries around in Juno for *that* purpose. 6. Cross the street. This is maybe the first time a video game does that act. For a woman. 7. Get back into the house. 8. Walk forward until you reach the secret base. 9. Enter the base as Aiden. Wait until Jodie's command. 10. Possess the soldier and walk to the submarine. Kill his dude. 11. Kill the second. Go to the control shack to open the gate. 12. Approach the dead soldier by the sub. 13. Anyone else thinks physical wise, Nick is a better disguise than Ryan? 14. Steer the sub with right stick, left stick for throttle. 15. Talk for AGENT number number (it's longer than three digits. Not cool) Trophy. Don't talk for EYE FOR AN EYE Trophy. Oh Jodie, you're so vengeful. 16. Flashback. Possess the commander. Tag him along..until...oh. 17. So that what happened. Now, you need to fly to the orange hall. Find the one with firearms icon. 18. Kill the soldier here. 19. Now find the one with computer icon. Something like that. Possess the soldier standing behind. Press the switch. 20. Stalk him outside and possess him again (poor you). Grab the rifle from the armory. 21. Re-enter the control room. Terrible, terrible. 22. Fly back to Jodie, follow the purple path. Heal her and destroy the door. 23. Destroy Ryan's cell door. 24. Find the interrogation room. Aiden to kill the interrogator, Jodie to take the explosives. 25. Make your way to the red hall. The ghosts ignore you. Why? Because Chinese guys don't dig white chicks (well, I do). 26. Find the room with the pool and take the diving suit and the armor suit. 27. Walk along the path to the condenser. Again the ghosts ignore you. 28. Plant the explosives on the green tubes. 29. Find your way back to the pathway. Mash X to run. 30. Very brutal duel against the Chinese commander (come on, you think any -stan country has the technology and has geography and people like there? You are in China). 31. Run through the halls, passing falling and flying objects. 32. Exit the sub and swim upward. 33. Feel free to respond to the inappropriate Ryan. ______________ 7.21 Hauntings ______________ Jodie's Age: 9 1. Just wake up and follow the ghost through the hall. 2. Then channel her. That's all but ugh. ______________ 7.22 Black Sun ______________ Jodie's Age: 24 1. OK, it looks like you're stuck with Ryan. And you'll need his favor so be nice now. 2. Go down to the basement. Make your way to Nathan's office. 3. Take the offer. I would. 4. Channel his family again...don't be too rude. Then leave and make your way to the elevator. 5. Ah. So evil. As Aiden, remove the needle and stop the drug supply. 6. Fly up and locate the good guys. They are in the corner office with their drink. 7. Make a scene to get their attention. 8. Now you feel like a guiding dog. Locate the closest thing to the purple line and bang it. Eventually they'll reach the elevator. Press the button. 9. After Cole and Ryan fail to pass the guard, distract him and type Cole's name into the database. 10. Again, guide them into that dreaded room. 11. Back as Jodie. Evade flying objects. 12. Wear the cool belts. You're ready for the final challenges. 13. Move cover to cover. Don't get spotted. 14. The last cover needs some patience. If you're spotted, mash X to run. 15. In any case, Cole will be down. 16. A BETTER WORLD? Leave him to die. SAVED ALL? Drag him (O) to the elevator. Heal him with Aiden fast. 17. Walk with Ryan past the road of tears. A woman (Susan Holmes? No?) will distract you. 18. Meet Nathan. A BETTER WORLD? Be cruel to him and Ryan will die. SAVED ALL? Reason with him ([] and X). Oh Willem Dafoe. 19. The final challenge. Avoid the ghosts' attacks. If you fail, you'll die permanently and get the worst ending. So stay alive. 20. The final mile. Get rid of the annoying ghosts by mashing X and O. Don't get fall. 21. Get into the doomsday machine. Now you have the final choice. Go to afterlife and stay here? Heaven is white, the world is black. 22. Congratulations, you've beaten the game. Now choose your endings. _____________ 7.23 Epilogue _____________ Jodie's Age: 25 If you chose to stay alive on Planet Earth, it's all up to you, who do you want Jodie to spend herlife with. Alone? ON BEYOND: TWO SOULS _______________________ Strangely, it's easier to admit that you hate Beyond: Two Souls than praising it. Granted, the game's biggest selling point for me is Ellen Page. Generally male gamers say they dislike it because of the mediocre gameplay and the weak story. ------------------- 10.1 B:2S and Sexism ------------------- Beyond: Two Souls was released just weeks after Grand Theft Auto V, just when the controversy of sexism in the best-selling and technically superior game was around. So you have a British carnival of destruction with tons of sex jokes and astonishing simulation of streets of Los Angeles and wilderness of California, and you have a French study of motion and the supernatural in earnest and sentimental manner. Beyond: Two Souls, however, is not anti-GTA. Jodie Holmes is not Lara Croft, but that does not win her, or instead the game, approval from the growing feminist gaming community. Yes, it's a game starring a heterosexual woman (easier to put off male consumers than a homosexual woman, believe it or not, since they are uncomfortable with the prospect of romancing a male character). But consider these things: You don't only play female Jodie, but also male Aiden. From first person view. And from her childhood to her adulthood, Jodie needs Aiden to save her. "Help me, Aiden!" becomes a line Jodie says again and again. And that what really irritates the some players. And then, there are no important and strong female characters besides Jodie. In fact there are female characters whose stock types annoy the feminists. .Shimasani: "Can't talk for decades". The only person in Beyond if you have saved all possible characters. .Susan Holmes: The wife who puts up with an abusive and cruel husband. .Norah Gray: Well. Finding her is like the watching the finale of How I Met Your Mother. How I Met My Mother by Jodie Holmes. .Tuesday: Personally I think nothing's wrong with her characterization. .Stan's dead wife and Nathan's dead wife and daughter: Frankly, women hate it when you believe you're become miserable because they left you, fellas. I've been there. Hmmm...this is like seeing an entity, but is Beyond: Two Souls is not different to Grand Theft Auto V? If Dan Houser was just being rude, was David Cage just being patriarchal? ------------------------------------- 10.2 Quantic Dream's female characters ------------------------------------- Grand Theft Auto V just shrugs off the accusation of sexism with "we have no decent male character either. Everyone's just messed up." while Beyond has the angels in Cole and probably Paul (his stoicism in putting up with the sand monster every night and refusal to figure out how to defeat it are open to debates). Of course, Rockstar North is yet to introduce a playable female protagonist in the GTA franchise (I nominate Zoe Taylor from Bully) while Quantic Dream has booked two heroines for B:2S sequel. Back to the question on David Cage. Heavy Rain tells me three things about him and Quantic Dream. One, they can make a good story that gamers and critics approve. I can understand those who are familiar with Heavy Rain feels bit put off by Beyond: Two Souls' story quality. Two: Past female main characters of Quantic Dream's games are contradictions. Critics believe they are overtly sexualized, but Madison Paige and Carla Valenti were and are still popular with gamers. Unlike Jodie Holmes, in terms of sexualization (at least in my opinion) and popularity. Three: Quantic Dream insists that it all comes to player's decision. It's up to players if they want to dare Jodie to kill herself. It's up to players if they want to make Jodie vulnerable for some slimeballs. It's up to players if Jodie takes shower or not (in the Dinner, not in Navajo). Madison Paige in Heavy Rain was exposed to worse cases in the names of plot and motive necessity, realism, and again, player's choice. So yeah, my take is Quantic Dream (not just David Cage) producers have a certain degree of classical male views and desires on women, which are strongly French all with the emotion and philosophy. Furthermore, I believe they want to test the limits of the Uncanny Valley - if guys are looking for virtual sex and porn in video games and animation, how far can we, and they, can go? Can virtual au naturel be finally natural? What worries me if they could create a Madison Paige and inflicts her with the possibility of doing a striptease, being a recipient of sexual desire instead of the one who desires sex (like Jodie), and may die horribly from sexual assault; and still receive rave applauses, for her plus and minus points, then naturally more developers and producers will create more Madisons than Jodies. The difference is essentially between Heavy Rain and Beyond (writing and gameplay) but it also still can come to the characters and how the writers set possible plots for them. ----------------------------------- 10.3 Beyond: Two Souls and Gone Home ----------------------------------- Directly, there is no relation between the two games. Gone Home is an indie adventure and first person exploration game. If feminists are not impressed with Jodie and B:2S, they are with Gone Home. As far as I know, there is no ghost in Gone Home (haven't finished the game), but exploring a deserted house on a dark and stormy night with teenage angst all around you while playing Beyond: Two Souls during the other hours made me constantly worried that an entity in Gone Home would jump on me. Essentially, Gone Home is a love story between two lesbian teenagers and you are the Aiden - the elder sister who has no direct relations with this romance but knowing and feeling everything at stake. It's constant channeling in putting pieces of the puzzle through collecting goods, examining rooms, and making the sense on what had happened with your family when you were away. Beyond is not a girl's game. Gone Home is. Not as in it's marketed for female audience, but in that it's a female story. Better, it is widely praised for its story and emotion. Better, it seems to be more successful in presenting game as art than Beyond in blurring the line between video game and motion picture. Then coincidence happened. Fullbright Company, the maker of Gone Home, became the champion of the LGBT community and made headlines in gaming journalism by withdrawing from 2013 Penny Arcade Expo over the growing issues of sexism and negative attitude toward LGBT community members in gaming media and communities. Then in early 2014, Ellen Page came out and declared her homosexuality. ------------------------- 10.4 ...and The Last of Us ------------------------- And there is the critically acclaimed The Last of Us. It was tested on female focus groups and days after Ellen Page came out, protagonist Ellie kissed Riley in the Left Behind DLC. You must have heard this story: Ellen Page stated that Naughty Dog quote ripped off unquote her likeness in designing Ellie (ah), who facially doesn't resemble her voice actor Ashley Johnson. She didn't sue or anything, but certainly there was some minor confusion on which video game Ellen Page was involved with. Needless to say, The Last of Us marched on as one of the best games of 2013. Good for Beyond, it also becomes Quantic Dream's best selling title especially in Europe. Both games are warmly received by film industry communities. So why don't I play The Last of Us? Post apocalyptic story. Zombies. Survival Horror. ______________ 11. Conclusion ______________ Phew, that was some rambling. I've planned to finish Beyond: Two Souls later on, but strong desires to share what I know and why I've enjoyed this game make it happen. So yeah, thanks Jodie. I hope you enjoy reading this guide as much I enjoy writing it (sorry for any bad joke or grammar mistake or strong opinions), and I hope it helps you finishing and enjoying Beyond: Two Souls. Personally yes, this is one of my favorite games although horror is never my favorite topic. I just love it for its accessible gameplay, powerful and cool quick time events, and the ability to play as one of my favorite actors. I agree the story leaves a lot to desire, but really I can't be bored revisiting this game and sharing my enthusiasm for it. - awritingdog, Southeast Asia, mid 2014.
