I've never contributed any sort of meaningful guide, so, here's a guide for the game I'm playing now - DJMAX RESPECT. This is a Korean rhythm action game which derives from the formula introduced by Konami's first music game BEATMANIA. Notes scroll, you hit the button, and it plays the sound. You're playing the music! There isn't much to this game. It was quite an easy guide to make. Just follow my directions, don't give up, and don't be afraid to challenge yourself. :) [II. MODES] ARCADE - All songs are available. Use this to play songs you haven't unlocked yet. There are five songs quite hard to unlock and they're great tracks. FREESTYLE - Unlocked songs are available. Use this to grind for combos and relax. MISSION - Wait a bit to jump into this, but you get 2 unlocks from easy missions, so get into 5B mode as soon as you can. ONLINE - You can play anything your opponent has purchased or unlocked. 4B MODE - This is pretty straightforward. Since your hands are static, you'll build hand stamina much faster in this mode, as well as be able to focus on the analog notes, and work on your timing. 5B MODE - This is a bit tricky. You can use the two middle inputs for the same note. The middle note (3) combined with 4 or 5 should obviously be used to hit RIGHT on thed-pad and the middle note (3) combined with 1 or 2 should be used to hit SQUARE. Work on alternating inputs for when the middle note goes more than once. If you don't do this, you'll have a hard time comboing and scoring on 5B stuff. Learn the technique early and stick to it. 5B is the most hated mode by players by far, but if you learn it correctly, it's quite fun! 6B MODE - Surely the most popular mode. Not much more to say. When you go online,if you do happen to still see lobbies, people are gonna be playing 6B most likely. But there's more to the game if you're up for a challenge... 8B MODE - The most difficult, but once you learn it, it's fun! BE SURE TO COMBO EASY SONGS before moving up. Once you get ahold of using L1 and R1 (don't move your fingers ever!) you'll blaze up in 8B mode. [III. GETTING GOOD / UNLOCKS] Basics: GET YOUR SYNC CORRECT. "Music sync" option really just delays the notes. Set game mode, disable all processing, and find your display lag via Google. Each notch to the left is one frame (16.6667 ms) so for most TVs which have roughly 30ms for display lag, set two notches to the left. Never put your music sync to the right. Also, audio delay is usually added to TVs to match the visual delay. You want to hear the notes when you hit the button, right? Your best bet is to use the 3.5mm jack in your controller, to use a USB speaker or dongle (Google "ps4 usb to 3.5 dongle") or use the optical audio output. DJMax Respect innately has only 10ms or so of audio latency which absolutely fine. Better than Bemani AC games, O2Jam etc. SET A MAX BPM, STICK TO IT, and constantly try to increase that. The faster the notes scroll, the less room you have for error. Too fast and you can't respond fast enough. I recommend you start at 300 BPM and gradually increase by 20. Most players max out at 510 BPM (170 BPM song at 3x scroll rate). You can change your speed during the song with L2 and R2 and it will save. TURN ON DISPLAY RATE. This will allow you to know whether you're too fast or slow and start getting high scores. Getting S ranks on songs is what allows you to unlock a lot of stuff, so don't be content just clearing songs. Since you're playing the notes, obviously you want to sound good too, right? SET TRANSPARENCY TO 0% or 10% because the BGA is going to cloud your vision. Also set BGA brightness to 75% or 50% - some songs like WhiteBlue's alternate BGA are quite blinding at full brightness - hey there's a reason a lot of old songs got new BGAs. BE RELUCTANT TO MOVE UP. If you're not getting at least an A with 10 or fewer breaks, you're not ready to move up. 5B and 8B mode have some tricky stuff, but getting used to the gimmicks at lower levels will allow you to blaze up in rank. IF A SONG IS TOO SLOW, TURN FADER ON. Set 60% max BPM. Some songs are just too slow at 5X scroll rate and you won't score on them. Also you get unlocks from using fader. USE ARCADE MODE to play these songs as they're the last ones you'll unlock: Brain Storm, Sin RMX, Stalker, Triple Zoe, voldenuit Learning modes & difficulties: 1. Start at 4B mode. Go to Freestyle mode, because in Arcade you may not have any Level 1 or even Level 2 songs available. Yikes! Play all available songs and during ARCADE MODE focus on playing songs you haven't unlocked yet. If you don't have a score, and the scroll rate isn't saved (the speed will be grayed out) then play that song. 2. Once you can pass 4B at Level 6 or so, start playing 5B and 6B up to Level 4. Turn your speed down a notch or so if you need to get used to it. 5B and 6B can be confused if you only stick to one mode, so it's best to learn both of these at the same time. 3. Once you can pass 4B at Level 9, and 6B (and 5B I guess) at Level 6, jump into the easier 8B songs. I strongly recommend restarting if you miss even one note, because mastering the L1 and R1 inputs is crucial. At some point 8B is just going to "click" and perhaps you may not even want to go back to 6B mode. 4. ALWAYS GO BACK AND HUNT FOR S FULL COMBO. This will make harder difficulties less painful to go up towards. You'll rebuild life faster by getting MAX 100% so getting good timing is also going to help you pass stuff. If you aren't getting any PERFECTs by Level 10, you really missed out and need to backtrack. Unlocking songs: The first thing you wanna do is play 4B in Freestyle until you're getting an A on Level 6 songs, if you stick to a max BPM and try to increase it, you'll have no issue with this. Don't give up and don't be scared! Jump into Arcade Mode about Level 3 or 4 to get some easy unlocks. Play some of the easier HD charts too! Also use EFFECTOR MODE (fade in) and use 60% max BPM! If you don't have them all, you'll start getting them soon. Be sure to start getting MAX COMBOS on the easier songs if you have not done so yet! Well this is where you jump into 5B and 6B MODE. Play those in FREESTYLE MODE until you can reliably pass Level 4. Also do the first set of missions! Then, be able to reliably clear 10s in 4B. And last but not least, MAKE SOME FRIENDS ONLINE - use GameFAQs or reddit or DJMax Global Facebook page comments section. Lobbies are hard to find. Also... play "Always" 6B NM or 4B HD to get that 6000 combo. Well wow. Time to go to FREESTYLE MODE. You should at this point be able to reliably combo 4B songs up to Level 7 and 5B and 6B up to Level 5. If you break your combo then restart the song. Go combo hunting, hone your skills on easier songs, just get some S MAX COMBOs and you should also be grabbing some perfects here and there. Just grind, grind, grind. And do all of the missions required for unlocks. And, this part you're not gonna wanna hear... take a break from grinding in FREESTYLE to start ARCADE MODE and learning to clear 8B songs up to Level 5 and also hone your skills in 4B/5B/6B. Try to clear LEVEL 12 on 4B and LEVEL 10 on 5B and 6B. I'm sure you can do it. By now you should be able to read 450+ BPM and have found your max speed. TROPHIES] This isn't a hard game to platinum at all. The trophies aren't tricky except a few. SILVER: Jaw Dropping Performance - "Always" 4B HD or 6B NM SILVER: The Lord of Combo - Get 999,999 combo by only using Freestyle to play songs you can combo. You can get this just by hunting for combos and perfects, which you should be doing anyway. But to cheat, "Always" will get you super high combos on all difficulties. BRONZE: Saved in My Heart - Hidden BGAs can be gotten by full comboing these songs: A Lie, Enemy Storm, NB Ranger RMX, Never Say, Out Law, WhiteBlue. BRONZE: This Is for You - Watch the credits at the end of Arcade Mode. BRONZE: Happy Lucky Day - Turn off FEVER and miss the second-to-last note ending with a combo of 1, then play Bright Dream 4B NM 4 times. You'll end with a 777 combo. THANKS.
