You may have heard of (or even played) Hakuoki before. Hakuoki is actually a series, consisting of several games and ports. The original game was released in Japan on the PS2. A port of this game was released on the PSP with the subtitle "Demon of the Fleeting Blossom" on Valentine's Day 2012 in the US. Later, an action Hakuoki game was released the next year. Most recently, a 3DS port of the main game was released in the US with the subtitle "Memories of the Shinsengumi". Now, we have this version, originally released in Japan in 2010. This game is a visual novel. As the name implies, a lot of reading is involved. Specifically, this game is a otome game, a visual novel targeted at girls that usually center on romance. Popular games often have fandisks (also written fan disc) released. These games are often released as a sequel or midquel to a visual novel, generally focusing more on romance or lighter stories. Hakuoki also has a fandisk, released in Japan for the PS2 and PSP, called Zuisouroku. Why is this important? Hakuoki: Stories of the Shinsengumi contains not only the main game Hakuoki, but the fandisk as well. So essentially you get two games in one. Neither of the previous versions contained the Zuisouroku fandisk content. There are also several DLCs available, and the graphics in the main game have been given an animated boost. The PS3 version, like its previous US releases, were released in both a standard and limited edition version. Due to production issues, the limited edition shipped two weeks after the standard edition. The limited edition includes a collector's box, omamori love charm, hairpin, and comb. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ AT2: Technical Information ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hakuoki: Stories of the Shinsengumi Developer: Idea Factory Publisher: Aksys Release Date: May 6, 2014 (Standard Edition & Digital) / May 20, 2014 (Limited Edition) MSRP: $39.99 (Standard Edition & Digital) / $59.99 (Limited Edition) Players: 1 ESRB: M (blood, strong language, suggestive themes, violence) Download Size: 8.0 GB ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ AG3: Guide Version Differences ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1.01 - Fixed a couple of errors/typos. 1.00 – Original version. Main game and Stories completed. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Section B2: Main Game Walkthrough This section will cover the main game (Hakuoki). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ BI1: Main Game Introduction ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Controls are straightforward. Listen/read until you reach a dialogue choice, then select with X. You can quick-save and load with L2 and R2 if you want to quickly explore different options. The Start button lets the game run automatically, stopping at choices. Square fast-forwards the text. L1 shows the text history, and triangle is menu. The game is divided into chapters and sub-chapters. At any time, you can use the Record of Service to jump to a chapter you have unlocked. Chapters 1 through 3 are a general route. The choices you make will determine which guy's route you take. Once you have completed two guy's routes, a secret route will be unlocked. If one of the characters likes what you say, you will see cherry blossoms bloom and their romance level will rise. You can check the level of romance under "Status" in the menu. Later in the game, the corruption gauge will be made visible. Each route has a good ending and a bad ending. There are also places where you can get a game over. (I consider these bad endings, but the "real" bad endings can only happen at the very end of a route.) To achieve the Platinum trophy, multiple save files and/or using the Record of Service is recommended. Please note that the Record of Service resets your romance level. Please note that this guide is a recommendation. A few different choices here and there are not likely to change your path, although you may miss a picture (CG). This guide is set up to get the most romance boots, CGs, and scenes involving a character in his route. If you want to get the Platinum trophy, most choices in the early chapters will eventually be made. While this guide is made to be an efficient way to complete the game, first-time players might want to avoid guides and see where their choices take them. This guide is set up for you to follow the Good Ending route, saving at certain spots. After the good ending, continue to the completion section to get all CGs and required endings. I will make notes (marked as "ALERT") of when you should create a separate save (do so at the dialogue choice the ALERT is above). Then just load the save, get the new CG, then exit to Title or load the next save. I'll list the CGs you get as the result of a choice. ALERTs will also let you know where you can receive a bad ending. Most of this is so that you may experiment with all the additional dialogue and text if you so choose. This game takes place over several years, so I've tried to include date information since it's easy to forget over how long this story actually plays out. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ BH2: Toshizo Hijikata ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Toshizo Hijikata is the commander of the Shinsengumi and is strict on both himself and others. At the very least, don't go ahead of where you are in the story. But even so, some events in Stories occur after certain scenes chosen through dialogue options in the main game, so they won't make as much sense (or, at the very least, spoil them) if you haven't viewed them already. And others, due to certain events, must take place on certain routes (even though they may not be marked as so), so again, spoilers ahoy if you haven't proceeded through all the men's routes yet. Other versions appear to occur on their version of the timeline. If this is your second (or third) time through, you might want to jump between the main game and stories so that the scenes fit in the corresponding timeline for each route. Or you can just play it afterward to avoid having to go back and forth. As this is a fandisk, it has more fan-service and fluff than the main story. Only one story (Shinsengumi Adventures Part 1) is open at the beginning. Play through this, then the decisions you make will open up one guy's Memories of Love (or In Days Past). Then you can go through these, unlocking a new one for that guy as you complete each section until you reach the end of their "route". Outside of Shinsengumi Adventures, there's only one prompt and two choices per episode. Complete all episodes and a bonus story will appear. Choices in Memories (not Shinsengumi Adventures) will allow you to gather cherry blossoms for the Ephemera Section. Once you have received Ephemera in a scene, you cannot gather it again. For more information, please see the Ephemera section, CE13. All the choices listed below will provide Ephemera, and I've noted when it also provides a CG that the other choice would not. I recommend saving at the first junction in each Shinsengumi Adventures. This will allow you to quickly unlock more routes and CGs. It's your choice if you want to unlock everything first or do one character's memories at a time. Gameplay-wise, I think it is easier to unlock the routes first in Shinsengumi Adventures so you can systematically go in order to unlock everything. Once again I have included date information since the some dates listed on the episode synopsis are wrong. If you notice any other wrong dates, let me know. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ CH2: Hijikata ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ **** CHS1: Hijikata Shinsengumi Adventures **** Shinsengumi Adventures Part 1: April 1864 * Distract Hijikata * Tell them everything * Leave it alone Shinsengumi Adventures Part 2: January 1867 * Infiltrate Shimabara * Write a note * Hijikata * Try to slip away +CG **** CHM2: Hijikata Memories of Love **** Part 1: August 1865 * I'll help with the research. It starts off in "budding". I *think* the tree levels up each time you gain 10 cherry blossoms. I counted 11 events for the opening and expanding rates, but then 10 again for full bloom. That seems rather odd, so I might have miscounted. I'm not 100% sure though. Either way, if you choose the correct answer each time, you should finish the tree before you finish the Stories section. These bonuses come in three types: 1) short voiced scenes that provide some additional information to the story, 2) unvoiced manga/comic-style "what-if" scenario with the characters set in a high school (I love Okita!), or 3) "what if" images. You do need to access the tree and watch certain videos to Platinum this game. ("Just how old is Otori?" and "You don't like Itou?" are required.) **** DCC1: Closed **** Closed is the 10% rate. 01. I assume it unlocks once Okita's route in the main gameis cleared, or it may automatically unlock
when all routes are clear. (Okita's was the last main route I did.) It appears to be the same as the $4.99 pay DLC, so don't waste your money. If you know something that I don't know or have missed, please email me at ditzy_brunette@sbcglobal.net! You will receive credit for anything I may use. Likewise, I would be happy to answer any questions. Please put something like "Hakuoki Guide" in the subject of your email so that I don't miss it. --> Why do we need another guide for the main game? I was planning on doing just a Zuisouroku (Stories) guide since there are several wonderful guides already out there for the main game, but since the limited edition was pushed back two weeks, I had some extra time on my hands. I had notes that I took from when I played through the 3DS version, so between those and the 3DS game itself, it wasn't too bad. I tried to make my guide different, but there's really only a few ways to make a visual novel walkthrough. I hope there are people who find it useful regardless. --> I've seen Hakuoki available for the PSP and 3DS. Is this a sequel? No. The main game is the same for all versions, but there are differences with the extras. If you have a choice, although the others are cheaper, I would choose the PS3 version, unless you prefer playing games on portables. For more information, please see the next question. --> What are the differences between the three versions? --> Is this game worth buying if I already have the PSP or 3DS version? --> Should I keep my PSP or 3DS version if I'm buying the PS3 version? The main game is mostly the same, but the characters now have moving mouths, lips, and heads. This version also comes with new content with the length estimated by the game as 20 hours. The opening and ending songs are different in each as well. (I didn't care for this version's songs.) 3DS also has a couple of short scenes (voiced, no visuals) and a "photo booth". I'd say buy this game, even if you own the previous releases. You are basically receiving two games for the price of one. Even if you are not planning on playing through the main game again, $40 is not an unheard of price for a PS3 game, especially for a niche title. The digital version has already been on sale, so keep your eyes out to see if it drops again. As for keeping the previous versions, that's up to you. I probably wouldn't sell it, but if you aren't a big game collector or don't have the funds or space, then have at it. The 3DS has the extra memorials, which are separate pay DLC, so you might want to keep it just for that. The 3DS had some typos, and I noticed a few in this version as well. The opening and ending songs are different as well. (I didn't care for this version's songs, although the opening video was nice.) --> Should I play through the main game if I've cleared the PSP or 3DS version or jump directly to Stories? No one is forcing you to. However, the graphics have received a bit of an upgrade with some animations like eyes blinking and mouths moving. You will also be missing out on trophies if that is important to you. Also, you will likely be able to clear it rather quickly since it will be the second (or third) time around. It also serves as a nice refresher, although the game does a pretty good job of reminding you of important events in Stories. --> Is this game overly violent or sexual? I was surprised when I first played this game that it was not as graphic as I thought it would be for a rated M game. There is limited sexual content in both instances and explicity. As for violence, this game definitely is not full of fluff like many otome games. It's set during a civil war, so the violence is not really gratuitous. However, if the mention (and focus) on blood makes you queasy, you might want to find another game. --> Is there an English voice track? No. Why? Probably a multitude of reasons, the number one being financial. It's also a period Japanese piece. The seiyuu (Japanese voice actors) are all very high quality, including Shin'ichiro Miki (Roy Mustag in "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood"), Showtaro Morikubo (Shikimaru Nara in "Naruto"), and Kousuke Toriumi (Kiba Inuzuka in "Naruto"). Please watch the Hakuoki DVDs to hear everyone in English. So, sorry, unless you understand Japanese, you are going to have to do a lot of reading. Practicing Japanese? Listen to how the English script differs in places (some places punched up, others truncated). --> What comes with the limited edition? --> Is the limited edition worth it? The limited edition retails for $59.99 and comes with the game, a "omamori" love charm, hair comb, hair pin, the game, and a box. Each item comes sealed in its own package, so they don't fit in their slots unless you remove them from their inidividual package. I would have preferred a book or something along that lines instead of a comb or love charm. I was lucky and had preordered it and Amazon dropped the LE price to $49.99. Plus it was in my gold box/quick picks for another 5% off. At that price, it was a no-brainer. For those who didn't preorder, that $20 difference is a bit more significant. That being said, the first one that arrived had the two corners of the premium box ripped. The replacement also came with two corners damaged, although not as severe. I would love to know if others had a similar problem with their box. Regardless, this is something to keep in mind. I know the LE was delayed due to quality issues... Collectors will probably buy it no matter what, but otherwise, it depends on how big of a fan you are. --> Which route should I do first? --> Which route is the best or worst? --> Which route is your favorite? If it's your fist time playing, you might want to just play at your leisure. However, Hijikata's route is the longest, so you might want to tackle him first. It also covers the most history, so it helps give a general understanding of certain events when they are only briefly mentioned in other routes. Saito's is also fairly long and covers many of the same events. So I would start with those two. After that, I would say Kazama/Normal route, then Toudou's. Both Harada's and Okita's have significant story splits, but save Okita's for last since his route covers a plot point forgotten in the others. Really, it's up to you. Ironically, the time I played I just did whatever and pretty much ended up going in reverse order of my (now) recommendationed order. Personally, I found Toudou's route the least interesting in the main game. I liked his character in other routes, but I just didn't care for his own. Hijikata would be next, although that's not surprising since I usually don't care for mains. My favorite route is Okita. Harada and Saito alternate for being second favorite (comes down to romance vs story). I wish Nagakura and Yamazaki had routes. Big idiots are always fun, and who doesn't love ninjas? As for the Stories, I think Saito had the best Memories (by a long shot), followed by Kazama. Yamazaki's scenes in Shinsengumi Adventures and his In Days Past were really good, too. Okita has the best letter to Chizuru. --> I'm missing a CG! The most likely culprit is you are missing an alternative CG, i.e. different uniform or background. Try to use the Completion section for each character to pick up those missing CGs. You need to get the blood and endure poses for different settings, like indoors, outdoors, outfits, etc. Endure poses usually need to have the guy's corruption levels altered, as just skipping to a chapter and selecting it won't make the CG appear. I had no idea until I read guides by Kazerei and chichiri_chan, so I thank them! Again, there are different ways to unlock these CGs, so some of my ways differ from theirs. --> I'm missing encylopedia entries! The most common missed are the two from the videos "Just how old is Otori?" and "You don't like Itou?". Some are also unlocked from the Memories section. Otherwise, please check the Encyclopedia section for other missing entries. --> I'm missing a trophy! Make sure after you complete things you go to the various menus. The "Your Permanent Record" trophy, for instance, needs you to go to the Record of Service. Visit menus and see if anything pops up. Also make sure you open each of the main cast's letters in the gallery to unlock the image trophies. --> How many Hakuoki games are there? --> What are the other Hakuoki games? --> Will any more Hakuoki games be released in the West? How many games in the series depends on how you count. There's the main game, fandisks, minigame collections, prequels, and alternate reality games, not to mention all the ports. For a complete list, please visit these links for more information on the series: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VisualNovel/Hakuouki http://tokio-fujita.livejournal.com/5632.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haku%C5%8Dki#Video_games The only other Hakuoki game that is not the main game that has been released in the West is "Warriors of the Shinsengumi" for the PSP. It's an action game, not an otome game. It covers some "what ifs" for the main game. If you want to see more Hakuoki, please support the series by buying this game and perhaps DLC and the DVDs. While otome games are still being released for the PSP in Japan, they are likely going to shift to the Vita, and I know Idea Factory was shopping around Amnesia V. Hakuoki (the main game) was already released for Vita, but I've heard it doesn't really have any new content outside of a couple minigames. --> Is the DLC worth it? Well, the free DLC is, well, free, so it's hard to argue why you wouldn't download it as long as you have the space or a passing interest. The 3DS "Memories" stories are not worth $2.99, in my opinion. They probably should cost no more than $1.99. Since there's six of them, that's $18, and the 3DS whole game only retails for $30, and the price might drop now with the PS3 version out. (However, you have to beat each route to unlock them.) Out of the six, I think Kazama's provides the most story benefit and character insight. Toudou's was funny, and I liked Saito's. Hijikata's was pretty lame. Kaoru's unlocks once you've cleared Okita's route, I believe (that, or all routes. Hopefully someone can confirm.) I was definitely interesting. As for the rest, I would imagine the actual story DLC would provide more bang for your buck than costumes. I hope to play through all of them and give a better answer after I finish the main portions of this guide. That being said, each purchase supports this release and may encourage more Hakuoki and/or otome games in the West. --> Are there any other games like this? Please try "Sweet Fuse: By Your Side" for the PSP. There is a puzzle element to it, and the heroine is more dynamic than Chizuru, but both games have their strong points. It's more accessible story-wise due to the fact that it isn't based on Japanese history and the video game references. If you play that game, though, the route order does make a difference if you want to avoid spoilers. If interested, I recommend Wakasa -> Meoshi -> Mitarashi -> Urabe -> Shidou -> Shirabe -> secret character (which only unlocks with the "present" choice on the 2+ playthrough). Otherwise, try visting http://www.englishotomegames.net/ for PC, Android, and iOS games. The Ace Attorney series and 999 are other visual novel titles released in the West and are fairly popular. --> Why is Chizuru so lame? --> Why does it take Chizuru so long to do anything? --> I hate Chizuru! Most otome game protagonists are not fully developed 3D characters, as the player is supposed both view themselves in her and supply some parts of her personality through dialogue choices. Yes, it's a six months before she leaves the compound, but a) she's not fully trusted, and b) it's dangerous out there. She actually shows great courage and iniative in wanting to find her father, but she also has the smarts to disguise herself to try to avoid trouble. She deserves some credit. Of course, she has some moments when those smarts just fly out the window, but who doesn't? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ FC2: Credits ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ First, thank you to Idea Factory for this release, and especially for Aksys for bringing this game over. Thanks to gameFAQs and Neoseeker for hosting this guide. Thanks to you for reading this guide. Thanks to Kazerei and chichiri_chan for their original guides for "Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom" since I didn't know there were alternate CGs the first time I played. Thanks to the HalfAdder Zuisouroku site, which I used to check routes. http://half-a.net/games1/hakuokiz.html Thanks to mperc for bringing up the problem with Kashitaro Itou [2] entry. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
