[003] =============================================================================== \\-\/-// **INTRODUCTION** \\-\/-// //-/\-\\===============================================================//-/\-\\ Wipeout HD is the first Wipeout game to be released on the Playstation 3. It is an exclusive title to the Playstation Network and can only be downloaded through there. The game itself is somewhat of an amalgamation of the two PSP games, Wipeout Pure and Wipeout Pulse. The circuits used are all HD remakes of circuits from those two games, and the craft models are based on those from Pulse. Nevertheless it easily stands on its own as an individual game with an online multiplayer community too. The Fury expansion pack emphasises the combat aspect of the game, introducing Eliminator, Zone Battle and Detonator modes, as well as giving the teams redesigned and upgraded craft. Eight more tracks were also brought back from the PSP games. The campaign is set out into a series of grids, with the object to advance through each grid and earn enough medals to complete them. All of the game modes below are found in the grids. Each race will have a set of requirements for a bronze, silver or gold medal, and these medals are worth 1, 2 and 3 points respectively. Each grid has a points requirement to advance to the next. Completing a grid cell will unlock all adjacent cells, meaning you do not have to complete all cells to advance to the next grid. For extra challenge, you can also change the difficulty of each cell. On single races and tournaments, the AI will become easier/tougher. For speed laps, time trials and zone events, the targets for each medal will become easier/tougher. While the difficulty has no bearing on the number of points you can earn, completing cells on harder difficulties fulfil conditions for a number of PSN trophies. Completing Race Campaign mode unlocks the campaign skins, a set of silver skins that can be used on your craft. \\// :SINGLE RACE: \\// //\\===================//\\ Single Race mode puts you up against seven opponents on the track of your choice. You can alter the speed class, whether weapons are allowed, and the difficulty of your AI opponents. This mode is also available to play in split- screen mode. \\// :TOURNAMENT: \\// //\\==================//\\ Similar to Single Race mode, Tournament mode allows you to set up a multi-race tournament against seven opponents with up to 12 races. The same options are available as in Single Race mode. Tournaments operate like a league. First place in a race gets you eight points, second gets six, third gets five, and so on. The pilot with the most points at the end of the tournament wins. This mode is also availble to play in split-screen. \\// :TIME TRIAL: \\// //\\==================//\\ In Time Trial mode, your only opponent is the clock. The objective is to set the fastest race time possible for each course over the number of laps corresponding to your selected speed class. Each lap you are given one turbo to aid you, use it wisely to achieve the best lap times you can. \\// :SPEED LAP: \\// //\\=================//\\ Like Time Trial, Speed Lap mode is all about setting the fastest time on a particular course. You are given 99 laps on your selected course to set the fastest lap time possible. One turbo per lap is also given in this mode. However, as only one lap time counts, should you mess up and want to start again, you can press L3 to invalidate your time and regain your turbo. You can do this as many times as you wish to get yourself back to the line as quickly as possible to try again. This mode is all about experimentation, using your turbos to find shortcuts and unlikely barrel roll points. It is also an ideal mode to learn a new course. \\// :ZONE: \\// //\\============//\\ Zone mode is a test of your piloting skills at extreme speed. The goal of Zone is simply to survive for as long as you can. The Zone craft you are piloting has maxed out handling and it accelerates all on its own. Every 10 seconds you advance one Zone and it gets a little faster, and eventually you will be flying at speeds that even Phantom class cannot match. A section at the left of the HUD will give you an indication of how fast you are going, and everytime you advance a Zone class, the track colour will change. This can be quite disorientating, especially on the darker colour schemes. Zone classes are as follows: Zone 1 - Sub-Venom Zone 2 - Venom Zone 3 - Sub-Flash Zone 5 - Flash Zone 7 - Sub-Rapier Zone 12 - Rapier Zone 16 - Sub-Phantom Zone 20 - Phantom Zone 27 - Super-Phantom Zone 35 - Zen Zone 42 - Super-Zen Zone 50 - Subsonic Zone 60 - Mach 1 Zone 75 - Supersonic Each perfect Zone that you achieve will restore 10 shield energy. Your score will increase constantly for the entire race. Hitting speed pads, barrel rolling, and running perfect laps and zones will increase your score further. \\// :ELIMINATOR: \\// //\\==================//\\ ELIMINATOR MODE REQUIRES THE FURY EXPANSION PACK Eliminator mode makes a return from Wipeout Pulse with a few extra tricks up its sleeve. Race position doesn't matter at all in Eliminator, it's all down to how much carnage you can unleash on your opponents. Weapon pads are constantly active meaning everyone can benefit from one weapon pad, and any weapons that do not deal damage are deactivated. The weapons themselves have also been given a damage boost, dealing considerably more damage than their normal race mode counterparts. Abosrbing weapons won't restore your energy either, all it will do will bring up a shield for a short moment, hopefully protecting you form an incoming barrage. The only way to restore energy in Eliminator is to complete laps or to use the Leech beam. Points are scored by dealing damage to your opponents, and the more the damage, the more points you'll gain. Eliminating an opponent will give you a large points boost, meaning that it is still beneficial to poach an elimination off of someone else. While the Eliminator- specific weapons of Pulse have been removed, you are now able to flip your craft 180 degrees and fly backwards around the track, adding a new strategic element to this mode. This inevitably means weapons can also be fired backwards leading to the return of the infamous reverse quake. First to reach a predetermined points target wins. \\// :ZONE BATTLE: \\// //\\===================//\\ ZONE BATTLE MODE REQUIRES THE FURY EXPANSION PACK Zone Battle is a brand new mode based around the idea of a multiplayer Zone mode. The object of Zone Battle is to reach a specific Zone before your opponents. Your Zone level increases at the same rate as in a normal Zone event but there are a number of ways you can increase your Zone manually. Speed pads have been replaced with Zone pads, which help to build up your boost gauge. Barrel rolling and running perfect laps will also add to the gauge. Hitting fire will drain your boost bar and add it to your Zone level. At the same time a Zone barrier will be dropped behind your craft, which are used to disrupt your opponents. The barriers are fairly large, and hitting one will considerably drain your boost gauge and deal 50 damage to your craft. The boost gauge can also be absorbed to regenerate some of your craft's energy and to raise a shield, rendering you immune to Zone barriers. The more Zone pads you hit in successtion before firing or absorbing, the larger the effect when you do. So Zone Battle is all about strategy; knowing when and where to boost or absorb and how far you dare leave it before you do. See here for a few more suggestions for Zone Battle strategies - http://www.wipeoutzone.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6608 http://www.wipeoutzone.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6501 See here for a video tutorial for Zone Battle - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqTPnXKv2GE \\// :DETONATOR: \\// //\\=================//\\ DETONATOR MODE REQUIRES THE FURY EXPANSION PACK Detonator is the second brand new mode introduced in Fury. It is another Zone- based mode that requires you to shoot down mines and bombs while running a Zone race on a particular track. Each event is 14 stages long, with each stage lasting one lap. After each stage, the number of mines on the track increases, giving you more to shoot at and more to avoid too. The Detonator craft is armed with a reloadable cannon able to fire 15 rounds at a time. Use the fire button to fire and the absorb button to manually reload. The cannon will automatically reload when empty. However, reloading takes a short time, leaving you vulnerable, so strategic reloading is essential. As well as the cannon, the craft has an EMP weapon that works in a similar fashion to the quake. Speed pads have been replaced with EMP pads, which are used to charge the EMP. Four pads are required to use the EMP, and subsequent pads will increase its range when fired. This will help to clear the track if you find yourself in a tricky spot. Shooting down mines will score you points, and the more mines you destroy in a single clip, the more points you will gain for each mine. You will also gain chain bonuses for scoring hits with consecutive cannon rounds. A bomb will also spawn in each stage. Shooting it down will net you a large amount of points which grows with every bomb you hit. While this is all going on, your Zone level is increasing which gives you less time to react. Hitting a mine deals 10 damage, and hitting a bomb deals 30, so you really get punished for getting hit. The event lasts until you are destroyed or you clear the 14th stage. See here for a video tutorial for Detonator - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdxSMzRbwlo [006] =============================================================================== \\-\/-// **RACING TECHNIQUES AND GAME MECHANICS** \\-\/-// //-/\-\\===============================================================//-/\-\\ \\// :BASIC RACING LINE: \\// //\\=========================//\\ Learning the track is one thing, learning the racing line is completely different. If you know the track, you can direct your craft around it. If you know its racing line, you can get around it in a much faster time and with fewer crashes and collisions. A racing line is the line you need to take through a corner to allow you to take it in minimal time, and also to set you up for the next corner. The best place to test our your racing lines is in Speed Lap mode. Once you have learned a circuit, you can practice exiting particular corners in order to set yourself up perfectly for the next. For example, the first corners at Chenghou Project are a long fairly shallow right immediately followed by a sharp left hairpin. Normally when taking a turn you would try to turn the craft as little as possible to maintain your speed, which would involve starting on the outside, moving over to the inside as you pass the apex, then moving back to the outside as you exit. If you do that with this first corner, you will end up on the left hand side coming into the hairpin and you'll have no way of entering it without crashing or slowing down dramatically. The racing line you need to take through these corners requires you to move over to the right upon exiting the first corner so you can actually take the second. Chicanes are another type of corner series that require knowledge of the racing line. You need to use the apex of each turn in the chicane as a sort of slalom marker, keeping the turns as straight as possible. Weaving over to the outside will slow you down somewhat. If the chicane is very shallow, it may be possible to see a straight line through without the need to turn. In this case, you can easily see the racing line and perfectly illustrates how you need to be able to take the sharper versions. The effect of gravity on sloped sections of track can also have an effect on the racing line, but that will be explained later. \\// :SHIELD ENERGY: \\// //\\=====================//\\ Your shields are what will keep you alive on the AG circuit. The indicator at the top of your HUD surrounding the weapon indicator shows you the status of your shields. Any form of impact will drain shield energy. Hitting a wall or another opponent will produce a slight loss whereas a weapon impact will reduce it much further. Obviously craft with a higher shield stat will lose energy at a slower rate than those with lower stats. When your shield energy is reduced to 20%, your computer will say "Energy critical" and your energy bar will begin flashing red. This is an indicator to absorb some weapons quickly. A warning beep will also inform you of your shield's low status. Get reduced to 10% and the beeping will become quicker. Once your shields are reduced to 0%, one more hit will destroy your craft. \\// :ABSORBING WEAPONS: \\// //\\=========================//\\ When you receive a weapon, you can choose to fire it or absorb it. Absorbing a weapon results in it being used to slightly recharge your shields. This adds a more tactical approach to using weapons when you have the option of repairing damage as well as dealing it. If your shields are low, it is highly recommended that you absorb weapons rather than fire them, even if your opponent is in clear view. Better safe than sorry. When using the standard HUD, there is an indicator that tells you how much energy is restored by each weapon. \\// :USE OF THRUST: \\// //\\=====================//\\ Quite frankly, you'll want to have the thruster hammered down throughout the circuit, but there are times where this can be tantamount to suicide. If you are racing a heavy craft, letting up on the thruster when taking a sharp corner will allow you to turn more sharply, and combining this with the airbrakes (explained later) will allow you to turn as sharply as any lightweight. Letting up on the thruster will also let you go over elevated sections without gaining too much height, which is especially useful when it is followed by a corner. Even so, completely letting up on it isn't recommended as you'll lose too much speed, quick releases of the thruster are all that's needed. \\// :AIRBRAKES: \\// //\\=================//\\ Airbrakes are your absolute saviour on the faster speed classes and the more technical tracks. You have two airbrakes, one on either side of your craft, which are activated by the corresponding shoulder button (unless you've opted for the single brake setup). One function of the airbrakes is to slow the craft down. This is ideal if you find yourself going too fast over a jump or if your craft has become unbalanced, as slowing down will reduce your altitude and balance the craft again. Don't get overly hooked to this method though as the speed reduction is severe. The main function is to use each airbrake to aid your turning. For example, hitting the left airbrake will slow the left side of the craft causing it to veer over to the left. Turning left while using this will dramatically decrease your turning circle at the expense of a little speed. Most turns only need light tapping of the brakes to aid passage, only the sharpest hairpins require holding the brake. In the hands of a skilled pilot, even the heaviest craft can navigate the most technical circuits with ease using the airbrakes adequately \\// :SIDESHIFT: \\// //\\=================//\\ Sideshifting is a supplement to the airbrakes, useful when taking extremely sharp corners. Double tapping one of the airbrakes will cause your craft to laterally shift in that direction. This is a very useful technique for sharp corners and hairpins as it allows you to correct your racing line if you have taken the corner too wide, you can simply shift back over to the inside. Chicanes are the ideal place to use this technique as you can shift from side to side to aid your navigation through. \\// :BARREL ROLL: \\// //\\===================//\\ Barrel rolling is a quick and easy way of getting a speed boost from a jump. As your craft leaves the track following a sufficiently high jump, pressing left- right-left or right-left-right on the D-pad or left stick will cause your craft to barrel roll. This technique will drain 15 energy from your shields and divert it to the thruster. Upon landing, you will receive a speed boost. As long as you have enough shield, you should attempt to barrel roll whenever the opportunity presents itself. Be careful though, if you attempt to barrel roll off of a jump that is too low and you do not complete the roll, your shield energy will still be slightly drained but you will not receive the speed boost. The barrel roll may not work if there are a lot of other craft on the screen due to input delay, and this effect is much more noticeable in v1.30 and above. It has however been fixed in v2.00, and barrel rolls are now much easier to perform. \\// :PITCH CONTROL: \\// //\\=====================//\\ The pitch control alters the altitude of your craft's nose. This is particularly useful if for some reason you wish to increase or decrease your craft's "grip" on the track. There are a number of inclined corners, like the one on Chenghou Project, that will throw your craft into the air quite easily as you try to navigate them. Lowering the nose forces the craft to stick to the track. Alternatively, there are certain areas where you may want to gain height, either to execute a cheeky barrel roll or to take a shortcut. In this case, raising the nose will make it easier for your craft to gain height, and given enough speed, to leave the track entirely. Pressing Up on the D-pad or left stick lowers the nose and pressing down raises the nose. \\// :EFFECTS OF GRAVITY: \\// //\\==========================//\\ As you navigate the circuit, the craft will feel the effects of gravity as they travel over sloped and undulating sections of track. If the track is sloped from one side to the other, the craft will slide down the track to the lower side. This is a real benefit in corners as the gradient of the track will aid your line around. If the corner is sloped towards the inside, you should stay nearer to the centre of the track rather than move over to the inside, and you'll also need to turn less aggressively. Dipping the nose will help immensely \\// :MAG-LOCK SECTIONS: \\// //\\=========================//\\ Mag-Lock sections add a new dimension of racing to the Wipeout circuits. They are indicated by dark blue sections of track. Going over one will magnetically anchor your craft to the track, allowing the craft to navigate features such as corkscrews and loops without falling off the track. While on a Mag-Lock, all navigational controls remain the same and the craft is no longer affected by gravity. Mag-Locks can also be used on undulating sections to keep the craft from launching off the track, which can also prevent barrel rolling. \\// :TURBO START: \\// //\\===================//\\ A mechanism that has worked its way into many racing games. While on the grid, wait for the exact moment the announcer says "go". When she does, hit the thruster and you'll activate a turbo as you leave the grid. A great way to keep up with the rest of the pack at the start of a race and also shaves some time off of a time trial too. How powerful the initial boost is depends on the Thrust stat of your craft. \\// :AI DIFFICULTY: \\// //\\=====================//\\ For Single Race and Tournaments, AI difficulty can be adjusted to suit your ability. The Novice AI are a cakewalk, very slow and very timid with weapons. A good way for beginners to introduce themselves to the game. Skilled AI are what you would expect from previous games, a fairly decent challenge in both racing speed and weapon usage. The Elite AI is a different story. Recommended for experts only, Elite AI opponents are extremely aggressive, pounding you with every weapon they can lay their hands on. They can also navigate a course very easily, requiring you to get a very consistent racing line in order to beat them. \\// :QUICK LAP: \\// //\\=================//\\ A commonly known trick but included here for completion's sake. In Time Trial and Speed Lap you are given one turbo per lap to help you improve your lap and race times. This comes in handy when you are after a good lap time in particular, as if you activate it right before you cross the line, the effect of the turbo carries into the next lap. And of course, you will pick up another turbo as soon as you cross the line, effectively giving you two turbos in one lap. There are several tracks where this is not an effective strategy though, so be careful. [007] =============================================================================== \\-\/-// **ONLINE PLAY** \\-\/-// //-/\-\\===============================================================//-/\-\\ Once you feel you have the hang of the mechanics of the game, online play awaits for you to race against players from around the world. In online, only single race and tournament modes are available. You need to be signed into the Playstation Network to compete online, and there is a separate Multiplayer Race records table for online records. \\// :CREATING GAMES: \\// //\\======================//\\ There are a number of options for setting up an online race. The first one is to select whether you only want one race or you want to set up a tournament. once the race is finished, you will return to the lobby where you can edit the settings again. You can then select one of the four speed classes. Be aware that generally the higher your speed class, the higher calibre of player you are likely to attract, but there are some very good players who do like playing on slower classes. You can turn weapons on or off depending on your playing preference, but do be aware that the majority of online players like weapons on. HUD Weapon Hints shows the weapon that each player is carrying during the race next to their name, you can choose to have this on or off. You can select whether your game will be public, friends only, or invite only. Very good for organising private games and tournaments. You can turn barrel rolls on and off, as well as whether to allow players to use Pilot Assist. Players who use PA will still be allowed to join your game, but it will be deactivated when they race. Finally, you can alter the number of laps for each race up to a maximum of 20. You cannot have any fewer laps than the standard number for that class. From there, you then choose your course (or courses for a tournament) and your craft. Then it's a matter of waiting for others to join your game. Depending on the number of players in your lobby, there is an automatic countdown to begin the race is you do not act. The more players, the shorter the waiting period. This is to prevent players who create games and then disappear from keeping people waiting unnecessarily. If you wish to manually interrupt the timer, press Start when prompted and the timer will reset. If you have reason to prevent the race from starting for an extended period, going into race settings will disable it, but be aware this can annoy people and they will likely leave. Also, if you do change any of the settings, please give others time to amend their craft choice or leave the game. Nothing pisses people off more than joining a Phantom race only for the host to change it to a Venom 20-lap Anulpha Pass borefest and immediately start the game. Do this, and don't be surprised if everyone bails on the grid. \\// :JOINING GAMES: \\// //\\=====================//\\ Joining other games is a simpler procedure. Selecting the Join Game tab will bring up a list of all games that are currently available. You can filter this list depending on whether you want a single race or tournament, the speed class, if you want friends-only races, and the region in which the race is being hosted. The importance of this will be explained later. Highlighting a race in the list will tell you how may free slots there are, and also if the race has already started. If so, you can still join, but you will need to wait for the current race to finish. Alternatively you can enter Spectator Mode to watch the race. Once you are in the game lobby, you can select your craft and wait for the host to begin the race. There seems to be a general practice of waiting players to flash their craft symbol to indicate to the host that they want to start, but this is bad etiquette. If you don't wish to wait for the host, you can always leave and look elsewhere, there is no need to hassle them. \\// :INVITES AND JOINING FRIENDS: \\// //\\===================================//\\ A new feature in v1.30, you will notice in the bottom right hand corner that there is a box indicating anyone in your friends list who is currently playing. Pressing up and down on the d-pad will switch between friends. If you wish to join their game, press triangle and you will immediately enter their lobby if there is a space. You can also sent invites to friends if you want them to join your game. Press R1 while in a lobby and you can send an invite. If you receive an invite yourself, press select and then square to view it. Accepting a invite will take you immediately to the appropriate lobby. \\// :RANKING: \\// //\\===============//\\ New to v1.30, each player has an online rank to represent how much they have played and their general ability level. As you play online, your rank builds up from Rank 1 all the way to Rank 50. Every 5 levels your insignia will change to indicate your increase in rank. Ranks build no matter if you come first or last in a race, but obviously they build quicker when you win races. In general, the rank is only a real indicator of how much a particular player has been playing the game, there are high ranked players for example who may have achieved their rank from playing a lot online but performing badly. On the other hand, there may be players who are incredible, but don't play a lot, resulting in a lower rank. Be aware that if you decide to quit during a race, you will lose ranking. From v2.00, your rank now extends to 100. \\// :BADGES: \\// //\\==============//\\ At the end of each online race or tournament, players are awarded a badge depending on their actions during the race. Only one badge of a particular type is awarded per race and so each player will receive a unique badge. There are 33 badges to earn, all are listed later in this guide. Some have a higher priority in the game than others and will override other badges. For example, you may hit more speed pads than everyone else which would normally award you Speed Pad Hunter, but if you destroy someone, you would receive Destroyer instead as the game considers it a higher ranked badge. Some badges can only be earned in tournaments. A full list of badges is given later in this FAQ \\// :OTHER CRAFT: \\// //\\===================//\\ Other craft in a race are not following the exact path they are actually taking, but rather they are following a predicted bath based on the control input of whoever is controlling that craft. This is so it feels like you are racing opponents in real time rather than seeing them lag half a second behind you but following the exact path. Because of this, opponents' craft will be stuck to the track like glue and will slam you aside if you come into contact with them. While it would appear that nothing happens to the other craft, it is because on the other person's screen, you did not in fact hit them. However, they will see you suddenly slow down. It can happen in reverse too. This makes close races very difficult as contact is likely to have heavy repurcussions. The only advice is to avoid contact with opposing craft as much as possible. This can make it seem that everyone else has a huge advantage over you, but rest assured they are dealing with exactly the same issue. \\// :LAG: \\// //\\===========//\\ A major problem in any online game, Wipeout HD is no different. If there is a large distance between you and the host, there may be a delay in your PS3 recognising changes in the race. These can manifest in various ways. As there is an inherent lag in a long distance connection, the predicted craft mentioned above are the first effect of this. However, lagging the connection more can produce undesired effects. The most noticeable of these will be a reduced ability to barrel roll. While it is still possible, a more heavy handed approach to performing it will be needed. Weapon pads also become an issue. Sometimes weapon pads will permanently deactivate, remaining greyed out for the whole race. As lag worsens, there may be times at the start of a race where everyone will suddenly shoot off into the distance or you will appear to leave everyone else on the grid. This will happen if the server starts the race for some people but delays the start of others. The times at the end of the race will be fine though. Another example is a delay in weapon pad animations. An opponent may be in front of you and pick up a pad. The pad may not immediately deactivate, resulting in a much longer time before a weapon is available again. Finally, in the worst cases of lag, you may experience severe delay in receiving weapons from weapon pads or not gain any weapons at all. Other craft may appear to be moving extremely erratically as well. One time from personal experience, I did not receive any weapons all race, then all of a sudden I started receiving them all at once, getting the next one after using one. In order to minimise lag, it is best to have a wired connection for your PS3 and to play games hosted in areas that match yours. You are able to play games across regions, but these are the issues you may face. [008] =============================================================================== \\-\/-// **WEAPON SYSTEMS** \\-\/-// //-/\-\\===============================================================//-/\-\\ The weapons systems are identical to those used in Wipeout Pulse, minus the Eliminator weapons. A new feature in Wipeout HD is that the HUD will give an indication of how powerful each weapon is and also how much shield energy is restored when absorbed. While absorption is an exact figure, the damage that is actually dealt to a craft is affected by its shield rating. The Damage figures are therefore more use as a comparison of weapon power rather than an exact figure. \\// :LEECH BEAM: \\// //\\==================//\\ _ The Leech beam serves a purpose beyond that of | | simply dealing damage. When picked up, a thin ___| |___ ________ reticule will lock onto the nearest craft. When |___ ___| |________| activated, the beam will steadily drain the | | target's shield energy for up to four seconds. |_| That shield energy is then added to your own reserves. Even when your energy is full, the beam will continue draining energy until the link is DAMAGE - 0 broken. This can happen either by enough time ABSORB - 10 elapsing, the target moving out of range, or the target activating a shield. Also, a target that has been leashed by the beam will be slowed greatly. It is a very poor weapon to absorb, restoring only 10 energy points. The maximum amount of energy that can be drained with the leech beam is 8. \\// :AUTOPILOT: \\// //\\=================//\\ _____ Autopilots are very useful on technical courses, / ___ \ as it can tackle certain corners far faster than / / _ \ \ any human player can. When activated, the / / / \ \ \ autopilot will take control of the craft for five | | \_/ | | seconds, navigating even the trickiest corners |_| |_| with ease. It can be deactivated at any time by pressing the absorb button. While active, another weapon can be picked up, but the autopilot will need to be deactivated before it can be used or DAMAGE - 0 absorbed. There are a number of flaws to the ABSORB - 20 autopilot however. Firstly, some sections of a course are taken much more effeciently without the autopilot. Secondly, it finds undulations in the track difficult to deal with, which can slow you down or even slam you into a wall. Finally, it will not avoid mines or bombs. \\// :SHIELD: \\// //\\==============//\\ __ __ In a weapon-heavy race, a shield can mean the / _||_ \ difference between winning and tumbling down the / / \ \ pecking order. When activated, the shield renders / / \ \ the craft invulnerable to all weapon damage and \ \ / / effects for four seconds. Wall and craft impacts \ \_ _/ / will also be lessened. In many scenarios, it is \__||__/ always better to activate a shield rather than absorb it, but in the worst case scenarios, it can restore a quarter of your shield energy. DAMAGE - 0 ABSORB - 25 \\// :TURBO: \\// //\\=============//\\ .´`. For the pilot who just can't get enough speed, the .´ `. turbo is there to provide you with that extra kick .´ .´`. `. to open a gap at the front, close in on those | .´.´`.`. | ahead of you, to gain height for a cheeky barrel .´.´ `.`. roll, or even to jump sections of the track .´ .´`. `. entirely. Activate to gain a sudden boost in | .´ `. | speed. Turbos are obviously best used on straights .´ `. but there are sections of certain tracks that can be exploited with a well-deployed turbo. DAMAGE - 0 ABSORB - 25 \\// :ROCKETS: \\// //\\===============//\\ Your bog-standard unguided damage dealer. The .´`. rockets have been a staple of the series since its .´ `. inception, and they are now more effective than | | ever. When activated, three rockets are launched `. .´ straight forward in a spread pattern. While each .´`.`..´.´`. individual rocket only does a little damage, .´ `..´ `. hitting with more than one packs a real wallop. | || | But the real kick from the rockets is that they `. .´`. .´ have immense stopping power, able to bring the `..´ `..´ target to a near halt for a good couple of seconds. As they are unguided, they are best fired at very close range or along a straight. DAMAGE - 10 ABSORB - 20 \\// :MISSILE: \\// //\\===============//\\ Where rockets are for short range combat, missiles || do the job over long range. When picked up, a __||__ reticule will attempt to lock on to the nearest / ____ \ craft and will turn red when fully locked on. / / __ \ \ Activate to send a homing missile chasing down the / / / \ \ \ track after your target, dealing moderate damage \ \ \__/ / / on contact. The missile has a large turning circle .´\ \____/ /`. but compensates for this by being able to ricochet .´.´ \______/ `.`. off the walls of the track. The missile has a long ´ ` but limited range, and will self-detonate after a while. Raising a shield or dropping mines or a bomb are the most reliable methods of dealing with DAMAGE - 15 an incoming missile. Missiles may also end up ABSORB - 30 missing if the target is passing through a tight corner, where the ricochet effect may send it past its target. Finally, if someone else crosses the path of a locked missile, they are liable to get hit by it; missiles do not discriminate between locked and unlocked targets \\// :PROTON CANNON: \\// //\\=====================//\\ First seen in Wipeout Fusion, the cannon is a || fairly unique weapon both in its nature and its __||__ use. When picked up, the cannon arms 30 rounds. / ____ \ These are fired for as long as the fire button is / / __ \ \ held down, and the weapon will remain active until / / / \ \ \ all rounds are fired. Each individual round is \ \ \__/ / / very weak, and even a full burst will only do a \ \____/ / small amount of damage if all rounds hit. The main \______/ use of the cannon is to slow and disorientate your target. Hitting them on entry to a corner can easily cause them to crash. When absorbing a DAMAGE - 1 cannon, the amount of energy restored is ABSORB - 20 proportional to the number of rounds remaining. The rounds are unguided but long ranged, and are best used on long straights. It is also an excellent weapon for clearing mines and bombs out of your path, as only a single round is needed to destroy them. \\// :PLASMA BOLT: \\// //\\===================//\\ The single most powerful weapon in the Wipeout __||__ arsenal. The plasma is very difficult to aim, but .`./ _||_ \.´. deals very heavy damage to any craft it hits. When `.`. .´.´ activated, the plasma will charge for one second / / \ \ before hurtling down the track in a straight line. \ \ / / Despite the explosion when it hits something, it .´.\_ _/.`. can only damage one target, but it does have a ´.´\__||__/`.` small slowing effect on any craft nearby. What || makes the plasma a difficult weapon to use is its charge time, requiring you to time your shot perfectly. Alternatively, wait until you are on a DAMAGE - 60 long straight with a number of opponents and then ABSORB - 40 fire. If you don't hit any of them, you should at least make a few of them panic. The plasma also provides the greatest boost to shield energy if absorbed, and so are the best friend of any pilot with low energy \\// :QUAKE DISRUPTOR: \\// //\\=======================//\\ While not the most powerful of weapons, the quake .´`. is by far the most fun to use. When activated, a ____.´.´`.`.__|\ huge energy wave is sent hurtling down the track, | __.´ `.__ | slamming into anything it hits. While the damage | | .´`. |/ is fairly mediocre and the stopping power isn't | |__.´.´`.`.__|\ overly impressive, the ability to hit such a large |____.´ `.__ | number of targets is invaluable if you are stuck |/ in the middle of the pack. The best part is that short of activating a shield, there is no way to DAMAGE - 15 avoid a quake; if one is coming then your ABSORB - 40 opponents will just have to brace themselves. A cheeky use of the quake is to interrupt your opponents' barrel rolls, which can be far more damaging than the quake itself. Finally, it makes for an excellent method of disposing of your opponents' mines and bombs, making them useful even if you are at the front of the pack. If you are really desperate for shield energy, they also restore as much as a plasma when absorbed. Unlike in Wipeout Pulse, you can no longer turn around and fire quakes backwards. You can in Eliminator though \\// :MINES: \\// //\\=============//\\ There isn't much you can do against opponents __ __ __ __ coming up behind you, but what you do have will / \/ \/ \/ \ provide a suitably unpleasant experience for \__/\__/\__/\__/ anyone that traces your line too closely. Activate
to release a cluster of five mines directly
behind your craft, tracing your racing line. How
you lay them is up to you. You can lay them all in
DAMAGE - 5 a line and hope that your pursuer hits the lot, or
ABSORB - 20 you can lay them in a spread across the track so
they are likely to hit at least one. It all
depends on how you pilot your craft when you
activate it. One mine does little damage and has a
small stopping effect, but a full cluster can
bring a craft to a standstill. While they are the
most use when you are out in front, they can still
be fun if you are languishing at the back. Mines
stay on the track for a short while and it is very
possible to lay a cluster and hit the race leader
if you are far enough back.
\\// :BOMB: \\//
//\\============//\\
__ __ The alternative to a cluster of mines is the bomb.
/ _||_ \ While the mines are a widespread collection of
/ / __ \ \ small damage dealers, the bomb is a single large
/_/ / \ \_\ package capable of disrupting a number of craft in
\ \ \__/ / / one large boom. Activating will release a bomb
\ \_ _/ / directly behind your craft, where it will remain
\__||__/ for a period of approximately thirty seconds. Any
craft that come into contact with the bomb will
cause it to detonate, dealing damage and throwing
DAMAGE - 15 nearby craft into the nearest wall. Other craft
ABSORB - 25 caught in the radius will also suffer some damage
depending on how far they were from the initial
explosion. The blast is fairly bright too,
blinding anyone flying into it. Unlike mines, it
is not recommended to drop a bomb if your opponent
is right behind you, as you will be caught in the
blast. Bombs that self detonate have no effect on
any nearby craft, but those that are detonated by
weapon fire will.
To provide an example for how the shield statistic of a craft affects weapon
damage, this chart details the damage sustained by a Triakis (Shield 100) and
an Icaras (Shield 60). Damage for all other craft will fall between these two
depending on shield stat. While the shield will only have a small effect on the
damage received, this all adds up over the course of a race.
| Weapon | Triakis | Icaras | Base Damage

| Rocket | 9 | 11 | 10
| Missile | 13 | 16 | 15
| Mine | 5 | 6 | 5

In recent years, the often-disjointed FEISAR team have been pushed forward
under threat of competition from one of its own member states, as Great Britain
broke away to concentrate on the Icaras project. Despite this, the FEISAR
representatives are sticking with the tried and tested, and their latest
incarnation is testament to that. The craft that FEISAR produce have always
been popular with beginners due to their phenomenal handling. Coupled with a
good set of thrusters and a powerful shield generator, this craft is absolutely
made for the technical circuit. Of course, the offshoot of this is that there
is little room remaining for top speed, which the FEISAR noticeably lacks. This
may not be particularly troublesome on technical circuits, but it will take a
good pilot to hold the lead in the open. The Fury upgrade however has made it a
considerable threat. It has received a much-needed speed boost as well as a
small thrust upgrade, while maintaining it's lightning reflexes.

Since their re-founding following the G-Tech debacle, AG-Systems have steadily
worked their way back up the ladder and are once again a force to be reckoned
with on the AG circuit and are determined to prove that their last FX300
Championship win was no fluke. Although the disqualification of Triakis may
have had a hand in it of course. AG-Systems have gone down a similar route to
that of FEISAR, in that they favour agility above raw power. They are lacking
in the top speed department, but they have also sacrificed a small amount of
handling for more powerful thrusters. Getting through corners may be slightly
more taxing, but you'll have the advantage getting out of them. You'll also
find them being among the first craft off the line, giving a good early race
advantage. The Fury craft has received identical upgrades to the FEISAR, giving
it very powerful thrusters bettered only by Goteki45.

Assegai have traditionally favoured speed and agility above all else, which has
been evident since their first appearence way back in the F7200 league. In
terms of being able to navigate a track, there isn't much better than the
Assegai. Very good top speed and thrust combined with excellent handling make
it an astonishing all-rounder. All this comes at a cost however, in that the
shields on the Assegai are somewhat weak. You will find yourself frantically
absorbing the majority of weapons coming your way in a particularly brutal
race, and using this craft will require you to keep out of combat for as much
of the race as possible. The Fury upgrade gives it a small kick in the speed
and thrust department, but otherwise leaves the basic setup untouched.

EG-X entered the league as somewhat of an unknown quantity. The merger of EG.r
and Xios seemed a strange mix, but all doubt was firmly put to rest when their
craft produced astonishing results in early qualifying races and even
embarrassed some of the more firmly established teams despite not competing in
the FX300 league. The EG-X craft is built for one purpose - to get you from A
to B as fast as is humanly possible. It is effectively a rocket with a cockpit
strapped to it, in that it has a considerable top speed coupled with very high
thrust. It'll get going very quickly, and when it does it'll keep up with
almost any craft out there. But then rockets are never known for their agility,
and the final result is a particularly heavy craft. A lot of airbraking is
needed to handle the EG-X, but the thrusters should ensure you aren't slowed
for too long. Its shield also leaves something to be desired, so combat is not
its strong point. The Fury upgrade boosts the strengths of the EG-X even
further, giving it a higher top-end while making it a little easier to handle.

Piranha have been known for one thing since their inception way back in 2097 -
sheer speed. In their latest craft they have produced what they claim to be the
engine with the highest top end performance since AG racing returned. Icaras
may have a bone to pick over that claim, but none will deny that in a straight
line, the Piranha is unbeatable. Just one look at the stats will tell you that
this is a machine built for sheer top-end output, and almost everything else
has been an afterthought. Piranha have seen fit to have a high-output shield
installed, which may be a saving grace if your airbrake usage isn't up to
scratch. Almost guaranteed to be last off the line, the Piranha will demand
that you get it up to speed as quickly as possible and keep it there. If you
can, there is little that can keep up. The Fury upgrade gives the Piranha a
much-needed boost in the thrust department while at the same time making it a
little easier to handle.

dominating force it once was. With the team practically haemorraging money from
every orifice, Qirex are poised to make a heavy impact on the FX350 with their
new incarnation reminiscent of the old Quantax model. While the new craft
appears somewhat balanced, it has taken a leaf out of the old book and given an
emphasis to shielding, making it an effective combat craft. It has a
considerable top-end and it handles remarkably well, but its main weakness is
its sub-par thrust. Getting out of corners and off the line will prove an issue
in this craft, but keep it moving and it'll excel no matter the circuit. The
Qirex craft has received a considerable upgrade in Fury. The thrusters are much
more powerful and both the top-end speed and the handling have been tweaked.

The military superpower that is Triakis have a point to prove after their

the race commision to outlaw their reverse-inertia deceleration system, Triakis
have been forced to redesign certain aspects of their craft, although its
general performance remains very similar to its predecessor. In true Australian
fashion, the Triakis is built like a brick shit house and handles like one too.
Its trademark is its incredible shield, able to withstand all but the most
brutal of assaults. To get this tank-like hull moving also requires a very
powerful engine, giving it a considerable top speed. Of course, its high mass
frame gives it a real disadvantage in the thrust and handling department,
meaning the Triakis should only be handled by experts. The Fury upgrade pushes
the engines of the Triakis even further, punping out a greater top speed and
significantly increasing the thrust. They have somehow made the craft easier to
handle as well, making the new Triakis a considerable force.

The Goteki45 team have had to make a miraculous recovery from their decline at
the end of the F7200 reign, partly due to their notorious reputation for
carnage on the track, but also from having their HQ mercilessly carpet bombed
as a result. The regeneration of their native Makana Island for the FX300 has
allowed the team to reform and put their undesirable reputation behind them.
Their craft performs in a similar vein to the classic F7200 model, and looks
almost identical too. The clear strong point of the Goteki45 is the massive
thrust it sports. If there is a craft on the grid that is able to shoot out in
front no matter where it starts, chances are it's one of these. This also makes
it excellent through corners despite its heavy handling, although some skill
with the airbrakes will be required. Its only real disadvantage is its top
speed, making it a somewhat tricky craft to master. The Fury upgrade pairs the
massive thrust with a greater top speed and a slight tweak to the handling.

Auricom have been uncharacteristically late in producing an entry for the

testing grounds. This is by no means a suggestion that Auricom are in hiding.
As long as Qirex are competing at the top level, Auricom will be there to bring

Piranha and Triakis in terms of stats. It has both an impressive top speed and
powerful shields, but instead of pushing one of these to its limit, Auricom
have elected to give their thrusters a kicking. While it won't be able to match
the lighter craft in terms of acceleration, it does mean it can get up to speed
a little quicker than the other heavyweight craft. It still takes some deft
airbrake work to haul it around a technical track though. The Fury upgrade
focuses on improving the agility of the Auricom, giving it a small increase in
thrust and a large improvement in its handling.

Mirage are one of the newest teams to join the FX350 and operate under the
influence of the Middle-East sand barons. The Mirage team themselves are the
racing division of the Mirage Anti-Gravity Excellence Centre (MAGEC) that
helped pioneer Mag-Lock technology and implement it into use for the FX350. As
a result, it is expected that their craft will get off to a quick start against
the veterans. The Mirage is about as average as you can get. Solid in all
areas, it is the ultimate all-rounder. This is the sort of craft where the
pilot can make all the difference against the more specialised opposition.
While it does not demonstrate any weaknesses in any particular areas, it is
definitely worth remembering the old saying - "A jack of all trades is a master
of none." Mirage must have taken this to heart, as their Fury upgrade pushes
their craft to its limits. A boost to both the top speed and the thrust pushes
it into the faster craft class, and it also has a much stronger shield.

When Piranha claim to have the edge when it comes to producing the fastest
craft on the circuit, Icaras are there to shove their arrogant claims back down
their throats. The team have come a long way from their F7200 days, when just
finishing a race was a cause for celebration. Now they are firmly established
in the new leagues, they are able to use their modest budget to produce a
chassis with a top-end that only the Brazilians can match, and even then Icaras
has them trumped in terms of acceleration. The Icaras is built for a little bit
more than pure speed. While the Piranha has the same top speed at its disposal,
the Icaras will try and get you to that top speed as quickly as possible, and
it uses its low mass frame to give that little bit more agility. This all comes
at a heavy price however, leaving the Icaras with the weakest shields out of
any team. Of course, any opponent wanting to take advantage of this will need
to catch you first. The Fury upgrade leaves the Icaras mostly intact, but
provides a small increase in thrust to keep it ahead of the new Piranha, and
tweaks the handling to compensate.

It would seem that Harimau's eco-restoration projects have taken precedence
over their racing development in recent times, and while the media attention
has been favourable for the team, some wonder whether it is all a pulicity
stunt, or whether the team really do care about restoring animals extinct for
decades. In any case, their new bio-fuel craft appears to be a similar beast to
the one appearing in the FX300 league. Looking at the statistics, the Harimau
on face value appears to be inferior to the Assegai, sharing all stats but
thrust, where it trails. However, as well as the raw statistics, the craft has
its own unique feel to it, and some may prefer it over the Assegai. It's all a
matter of trying both and seeing which you prefer. The Fury craft has received
a considerable speed boost and a small thrust upgrade, finally differentiating
it from the Assegai which excels more in thrust.
The graph below shows a quick comparison of stats between craft:

//-/\-\\===============================================================//-/\-\\
Unlike previous guides, this time I have decided to do the circuit walkthroughs
as video tutorials. Visualising some of the instructions in a text guide to a
track can sometimes be rather difficult, especially when you can't see the
ideal effect of what a particular instruction is asking. The videos are hosted
on both WeGame and YouTube, so use whichever link you prefer.
This playlist contains all tutorial videos in one place -

\-\/-/ **VINETA K** \-\/-/

tricky corner thrown in to catch the unaware. Very balanced and an appropriate
introduction to Wipeout HD.

\-\/-/ **ANULPHA PASS** \-\/-/
/-/\-\===============================/-/\-\
Anulpha Pass is by far the fastest and most open circuit in Wipeout HD. With
virtually no complex corners, it is a haven for the top speed fanatics and
offers a number of excellent barrel roll opportunities too. Returns from
Wipeout Pure's Delta Pack DLC. See the Trophy Tips section for help with the
Beat Zico trophy.

\-\/-/ **MOA THERMA** \-\/-/
/-/\-\===============================/-/\-\
Moa Therma is another open circuit which likes to showcase the Mag-Lock
technology introduced to Wipeout Pulse, where this course returns from. Perhaps
a little more twisty than Anulpha Pass, there are a couple of corners that may
need attention. There are also very limited opportunities to barrel roll.

\-\/-/ **CHENGHOU PROJECT** \-\/-/
/-/\-\===============================/-/\-\
Chenghou Project is your first taster of a technical circuit, much as it was in
Wipeout Pure. There are a number of fast sections here, but the circuit is
dominated by sharp corners that will really test your prowess with the
airbrakes.

\-\/-/ **METROPIA** \-\/-/
/-/\-\===============================/-/\-\
Metropia follows in a similar vein to Chenghou Project in having fast sections
intermingled with technical parts, but Metropia prefers lots of quick corners
rather than a few heavy ones. This is particularly evident in the Reverse
variant, when one corner has to be taken blind. Returning from Wipeout Pulse
with a makeover.

\-\/-/ **SEBENCO CLIMB** \-\/-/
/-/\-\===============================/-/\-\
Sebenco Climb is the most technical circuit in the game. Only one fast straight
on the descent back down the mountain, there are plenty of sharp corners and
lots of places to sneak off a cheeky barrel roll. Returning from Wipeout Pure,
Sebenco Climb is a challenge no matter what way you look at it

\-\/-/ **UBERMALL** \-\/-/
/-/\-\===============================/-/\-\
Making a return from the Wipeout Pure Gamma Pack DLC, Ubermall is a
considerably tricky circuit in places, and is also rife with shortcut
opportunities. If you can master them, you can gain a real jump on the
opposition, but they are risky. The last corner series could also be considered
the most difficult in the game.

/-/\-\===============================/-/\-\
The final circuit in Wipeout Pure is also the final circuit in Wipeout HD. Sol
2 is quite a fast course in places, but there are several very sharp turns to
navigate as well as a very long open section. Barrel roll opportunities may not
be obvious, but the are there for the daring.

TALON'S JUNCTION REQUIRES THE FURY EXPANSION PACK
Returning from Wipeout Pulse, Talon's Junction is somewhat narrower than it's
previous incarnation. It is a jack of all trades: long straights, sharp
hairpins, chicanes and a loop. It is a circuit that will take some getting used

By far the longest track in the game, The Amphiseum also makes a comeback from
Wipeout Pulse. The track contains a considerable number of straight sections
dotted with corners that are very deceiving in places. It can be quite
difficult to predict what your craft will do when the track suddenly tightens.

MODESTO HEIGHTS REQUIRES THE FURY EXPANSION PACK
If you thought Sebenco Climb and Chenghou Project were tough, the new
incarnation of Wipeout Pure's Modesto Heights is right up there with the pair
of them. Riddled with right-angled corners and sloped track sections, this is
not an easy course to navigate by any stretch of the imagination. Your racing
line will need to be pinpoint perfect to tackle some of the corner series here.

Tech De Ra makes its return from Wipeout Pulse as the final track in the Fury
expansion. It is for the most part a fast circuit, but it sandwiches this

which is comparable to the final corner of Ubermall. Look out for the open

\\-\/-// **ZONE CIRCUITS** \\-\/-//
//-/\-\\===============================================================//-/\-\\
The four Zone tracks from Wipeout Pure make a return in the Fury expansion.
Each of these tracks is markedly more simple than the standard circuits and are
designed for reaching high zones easily. They can only be raced forwards, there
are no reverse variants. They can also only be used for Zone, Zone Battle and
Detonator modes, they are not available for normal racing. Due to this, it is
extremely difficult to make a video tutorial for these tracks due to the
constantly increasing speed and the need to adapt the craft handling. Well,
perhaps I could, but the videos would be over 20 minutes long. So instead, I
have provided an example Zone run on each circuit and given a commentary on
some of the more tricky sections and how they need to be approached as the
speed increases.
\-\/-/ **PRO TOZO** \-\/-/
/-/\-\===============================/-/\-\
Pro Tozo is probably the most complex out of the four Zone circuits. Most of
its corners are surprisingly sharp, but are banked to allow navigation at high
speeds. Some heavy airbraking will be needed in parts as well as an aggresive
approach

\-\/-/ **MALLAVOL** \-\/-/
/-/\-\===============================/-/\-\
Mallavol can be summed up by the following: right, right, right, right... This
circuit has an unusual number of right turns, most of which are around 30
degrees. You'll need to watch your racing line through here as it's very easy
to get confused as to where you are on the track, which is not a good thing
when there's a chicane coming up.

\\-\/-// **FURY RACE CAMPAIGN** \\-\/-//
//-/\-\\===============================================================//-/\-\\
As above, here are the various grids for the Fury campaign. A set number of
points are required in each to unlock the next, with Bronze worth 1 point,
Silver 2 and Gold 3. Difficulty does not affect points and is solely for
challenge. The Fury Campaign showcases the new game modes mainly, with far
fewer race-based events and more of the new game modes.

\\-\/-// **TROPHY TIPS** \\-\/-//
//-/\-\\===============================================================//-/\-\\
Below are some tips for the more tricky trophies:
\\// :BLING BRIGADE: \\//
//\\===================//\\
A nightmare if you haven't played online much and don't have many listed
friends for this game. The only way you can really prepare yourself to get this
one is to play online and friend a few people. Alternatively, there are a
number of online communities that organise Bling Brigade sessions for those who
still need the trophy. The Campaign Skin is the silver skin you receive when
you finish Career Mode. With the inclusion of the Invite feature in v1.30,
arranging a Bling Brigade match is now much easier than before. The Fury
Campaign skins will work for this trophy.
\\// :DEADLY MOMENTUM: \\//
//\\=====================//\\
While this sounds a very simple trophy to acquire, the conditions to acquire
the trophy are that you are eliminated by your opponents, not by yourself.
While it is perfectly fine to wall grind until you are on critical energy, the
final blow must be dealt by a weapon from your opponents. Colliding with them
will also deny you the trophy.
\\// :FLATLAND FLYER: \\//
//\\====================//\\
There is one clear place on Moa Therma to gain enough height to barrel roll,
and that is on the final corner before the line on the Forward circuit. As you
take the banked corner, aim for the left wall near the speed pad on the exit,
pull the nose up and hit your turbo. This will launch you high enough to roll,
but you will need to control your landing to gein the trophy. On Phantom class,
a turbo isn't necessary if you can pull the nose up as you hit the speed pad.
See the Moa Therma tutorial video for a demonstration.
\\// :GEMINI: \\//
//\\============//\\
If you're on your own and don't have someone to play split-screen with, don't
worry. Only one person needs to finish the race in order for it to count as
completed. Grab a second controller and stick an elastic band over the X
button. You then go ahead and finish the race while the other craft simply
slams into walls and blows itself up. Repeat 20 times and there you go.
\\// :OWN THE ZONE/AIRBRAKER/ZONE ZEUS: \\//
//\\======================================//\\
Aiming for Zone Zeus will make obtaining the first two trophies much easier so
it makes sense to include them all in the same section. Anulpha Pass Forward is
the overbearing favourite to try for these two trophies due to its open nature
and lack of technical corners. If you have the Fury pack, Syncopia becomes the
track of choice, just as long as you can keep the craft under control on the
open sections. The airbrakes alone are surprisingly effective at controlling
the craft at low zones, but higher up they may not turn you sharply enough.
Again, Syncopia makes life easier for this one by having a wide track and no
sharp corners.
Have a look at the Syncopia demonstration for some tips on control at high
zones.
\\// :BEAT ZICO: \\//
//\\===============//\\
Quite possibly the hardest trophy in the game, Beat Zico has caused an enormous
amount of stress for players everywhere. The object is to beat a Venom class
Speed Lap time on Anulpha Pass set by Studio Liverpool's own Zico Liu. It
requires a near-perfect racing line and some very difficult barrel rolls to
even come close to the required lap time, and another whole track guide will be
necessary to point out the best way to tackle Anulpha Pass on Venom. The Fury
Piranha can be used to obtain this trophy if you wish, but it provides no
advantage over the original. As before it has been done as a video tutorial:
WeGame -
http://www.wegame.com/watch/Wipeout_HD_Beat_Zico_Tutorial/
YouTube -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66VL_K7kXt8
\\// :AMPHI-SCENIC ROUTE: \\//
//\\========================//\\
The shortcut on the Reverse course is in no way obvious, and it is also not
easy to reach. After the undulating Mag-Lock, the craft goes over a jump before
landing in a long right hander near the end of the lap. If you use the end of
the Mag-Lock as a ramp, pull the nose up, hit a turbo and aim for the window at
the top of the spectator stand on the right, the craft will pass through and
land back on the track the other side. This is a very precise manoeuvre and
you'll need to line yourself up perfectly to make it.
See the Amphiseum Reverse tutorial video for a detailed description.
\\// :DA BOMB: \\//
//\\=============//\\
Getting this trophy depends somewhat on the track you choose to attempt it.
Under no circumstances attempt this trophy on Corridon 12, the bomb can spawn
down either branch and choosing the wrong one will mean you miss it. Anulpha
Pass is no good either for the same reason due to the track split. Probably
the best track to attempt this on is Syncopia, which is particularly wide and
has no tricky corners to catch you out. The key for this trophy is to keep the
EMP charged at all times, so you need to make sure you're hitting pretty much
every EMP pad on the track. You should still be aiming to take out the bomb
with the cannon alone, but if you feel it is in an awkward position, you can
always fall back on the EMP. Score is unimportant, you should only really be
shooting to clear the way to the EMP pads.
\\// :HOLD YOUR FIRE: \\//
//\\====================//\\
Stage 10 is one hell of a long way to go without shooting. However, shooting
only refers to your cannon, it does not mention your EMP. This is a double
edged sword though. While using your EMP will clear a potentially tricky
section, there is a maximum number of mines that can spawn every stage and not
clearing them will mean they'll still be in the same place every lap
afterwards. This means you can memorise the locations and avoid them much
easier. If you use the EMP, all the mines you destroy will respawn in random
positions in the next stage making your life much more difficult. Feel free to
use it all you like on Stage 9 though, as you only need to reach stage 10, not
clear it. The easiest stage by far to attempt this trophy is Corridon 12. Aside
from the fact that the laps are very short, half of the mines will spawn down
the other branch, meaning you don't have as many to deal with.
\\// :ELIMIN18: \\//
//\\==============//\\
A lot of you are probably thinking Novice, 600 points, job done. It's not that
simple. While 18 eliminations will only net you 360 points, you are also going
to gain points for the damage dealt by your weapons even with an elimination.
You are not going to get an elimination with every shot, and points build up
surprisingly quickly. So if your going to be picking up points faster than you
want to, you need a way to lose them quickly. You need to pick a track with an
open section. Falling off the track will lose you five points, so if you get
too close to the target, start launching yourself off the track until your
points total is low enough to continue. You want to maximise your damage with
your weapons in a single attack rather than wear your opponents down. To this
end, immediately discard any missiles, cannons, leech beams, mines and bombs
you pick up, they are useless for this trophy. All you should be using are
rockets, plasmas and quakes. Don't worry about the AI reaching the target, if
you're playing on Novice it'll take them ages. Rockets should be launched at
point blank, giving an almost guaranteed elimination. Plasmas are also near-
guaranteed, but if you hit a craft at full shield it won't give you an
elimination, so fire it in the latter part of a lap. Quakes should always be
fired through the pack at the end of a lap before everyone has a chance to
regenerate their shields.
\\// :STAY ON TARGET: \\//
//\\====================//\\
Definitely go Novice for this one, you need as few interruptions as possible.
You need to stay locked on for 30 consecutive seconds, the time is not
cumulative. The only real obstacle to getting this trophy is a weapon impact
will break your lock, so you need to not only remain locked on, you need to
hope that no one shoots you. Try to pick out a lone straggler and lock on to
him. Keep your distance though so he isn't tempted to turn around and stick a
rocket in your face. The only no-win scenario with this trophy is if a quake
comes your way, as there's no way to avoid it. Patience is key for this one.
\\// :JUST PASSING THROUGH: \\//
//\\==========================//\\
While you may think that Novice would be the ideal way to go for this trophy to
stop the AI from hitting the Zone target, you need to remember that the Novice
AI are thick. They will rarely Zone Boost, and they will blindly wander into
any Zone barriers that are left behind before you can hit them. By the time you
even get halfway, the Zone target will be decreasing. So you need to go on
Skilled for this one, and it goes without saying that you need a Zone target of
55. It can be done on Elite as there are plenty of Zone barriers to hit, but
remember that the AI will reach the Zone target very quickly. You only need to
hit two Zone pads to use your shield, so activate it when you approach a Zone
barrier and coast through as many as you can while it lasts. Then charge up and
repeat until you hit 15.
