This is a guide I put together from my personal experience with the Japanese version of the game. Since the English version's release I have updated the guide to reflect naming changes and the like. If I have any mistakes feel free to let me know. ================= On Chocobo Riding ================= To complete some of the trophy requirements, the player must have the ability to ride Chocobos. This ability is gained by completing Cie'th Stone mission 14. All Cie'th Stone missions are found in Gran Pulse and can be revisited. This in turn requires the completion of missions 1-13. Mission 12 removes the barrier to an area where Chocobos are found, and mission 14 will not become available until you visit this area and view the cutscene there. =================== On Repairing Bhakti =================== A couple of trophies require the completion of an optional event at Oerba Village, which is visited toward the end of chapter 11. If you explore the upper level of the house on the far end of the first area, you will find a little robot known to Vanille as Bhakti. However, it is not functioning correctly, and Sazh states that with just a few modifications it can be repaired in no time. The game then informs you that there are 5 parts required, and they are scattered about the village. The game marks them with a red circle and most are in plain sight. One is in the first house you can go into (on the second floor), another couple are out in the open, and one is by the train tracks at the very end of the village. The final, unmarked part is obtained by defeating a Vampire who is patrolling a corner next to a large tree. Once you have all five parts, return to Bhakti and he will be repaired. You can then talk to him. Note that you can't find the parts before triggering the event inside the house. This is a highly recommended sub-event regardless of trophies due to the useful tips Bhakti provides, and the fact that after repair he gives you several items based on how many steps you've taken on Gran Pulse. If you walk 10,000 and get the Pulsian Pioneer trophy, he gives you 3 Platinum Ingots! That's 450k gil right there. ============ Useful Shops ============ In general, accessories and upgrade materials are found in various shops, but there are a few worth special mention. First of all, two of the most useful shops open up through missions. They are the R&D Depot and Gilgamesh Inc, which unlock by completing missions 7 and 46, respectively. Gilgamesh sells weapons including some rare (and expensive) ones, which I had to visit to complete my collection and I'm sure most others will too. The R&D shop sells some of the best materials for upgrading weapons and accessories. It also sells Adamantite, which is not obtainable anywhere else. The specific items to make use of are the Particle Accelerator and the Ultracompact Reactor, depending on how much experience you want. Other shops open up by playing through the main story. You won't have them all until the end of chapter 12. For more details about how to upgrade effectively, see the Frequently Asked Questions section. ===================== Trophy Glitch Warning ===================== At least in the Japanese version as of the time I write this, there exists a glitch whereupon trophies are not awarded despite completing the requirements. I am going to assume this was fixed by the time it was released in English. It seems to be linked with the installation of the custom themes that are awarded for select trophies. In particular, it is believed to occur if you install a theme through the "Special" menu ("Extras" in English) at the title screen of the game, and then continue playing without restarting the game. Be wary of this! If you fall victim to the glitch, the only solution is to load up a previous save and try over again until you receive the missing trophy. So save often! ========== XMB Themes ========== Seven themes can be unlocked by acquiring certain trophies. I have indicated in the list which they are, but I will list them here for convenience, in the format of "theme: trophy required." They can be set through the "Special" menu ("Extras" in English) at the title screen of the game. Details: Your character has to physically walk 10,000 paces on Gran Pulse for this trophy. Once completed, talk to Bhakti to obtain the trophy. I had already fulfilled the requirements by the time I got to Oerba Village and repaired Bhakti in the first place, but if you have not yet done so, you can come back and talk to him later to get the trophy. Special: Bhakti will give you 3 Platinum Ingots when you obtain this trophy. He will also give you 5 Perfumes and various other items for reaching other milestones in steps taken. ++++++++ Name: Gysahl Wreath Description: Discovered buried treasure with a little help from a Chocobo. Details: For this trophy you must dig up a Ribbon while riding a Chocobo. At random the Chocobo will get an exclamation mark above its head while riding it, indicating that it senses buried treasure. As you get closer to the treasure, the mark will bob up and down faster, until finally it lets you dig. Normally, the prize you dig up is completely random, but you always get a Ribbon after digging exactly 20 times. Chocobos can only dig in dirt patches, so that limits your searching significantly. ++++++++ Name: Kelger's Cup Description: Completed all low-level Cie'th Stone missions. Details: Complete all missions of rank D. That corresponds to missions 1-5. ++++++++ Name: Xezat's Chalice Description: Completed all mid-level Cie'th Stone missions. Details: Complete all missions of rank C. That corresponds to missions 6-15, 18-22, 28, 35-37, 39, 56 and 57. ++++++++ Name: Commando's Seal Description: Mastered the Commando role. Details: Max out one character's Crystarium for the Commando role (Attacker in Japanese). This means bringing the role to level 5 and purchasing all abilities. It does not appear necessary to fill every single node as long as the role is at 5 and the abilities are all bought. Note that level 10 of the Crystarium does not unlock until you finish the game. ++++++++ Name: Ravager's Seal Description: Mastered the Ravager role. Details: Max out one character's Crystarium for the Ravager role (Blaster in Japanese). This means bringing the role to level 5 and purchasing all abilities. It does not appear necessary to fill every single node as long as the role is at 5 and the abilities are all bought. Note that level 10 of the Crystarium does not unlock until you finish the game. ++++++++ Name: Sentinel's Seal Description: Mastered the Sentinel role. Details: Max out one character's Crystarium for the Sentinel role (Defender in Japanese). This means bringing the role to level 5 and purchasing all abilities. It does not appear necessary to fill every single node as long as the role is at 5 and the abilities are all bought. Note that level 10 of the Crystarium does not unlock until you finish the game. ++++++++ Name: Saboteur's Seal Description: Mastered the Saboteur role. Details: Max out one character's Crystarium for the Saboteur role (Jammer in Japanese). This means bringing the role to level 5 and purchasing all abilities. It does not appear necessary to fill every single node as long as the role is at 5 and the abilities are all bought. Note that level 10 of the Crystarium does not unlock until you finish the game. ++++++++ Name: Synergist's Seal Description: Mastered the Synergist role. Details: Max out one character's Crystarium for the Synergist role (Enhancer in Japanese). This means bringing the role to level 5 and purchasing all abilities. It does not appear necessary to fill every single node as long as the role is at 5 and the abilities are all bought. Note that level 10 of the Crystarium does not unlock until you finish the game. ++++++++ Name: Medic's Seal Description: Mastered the Medic role. Details: Max out one character's Crystarium for the Medic role (Healer in Japanese). This means bringing the role to level 5 and purchasing all abilities. It does not appear necessary to fill every single node as long as the role is at 5 and the abilities are all bought. Note that level 10 of the Crystarium does not unlock until you finish the game. --------------- Silver Trophies --------------- Name: Instrument of Faith Description: Defied destiny's charge and embarked on a different path. Details: Obtained automatically upon commencement of chapter 12. Special: Unlocks Vanille's XMB theme. ++++++++ Name: Exorcist Description: Triumphed over undying lowerland souls in seven fierce battles. Details: Complete missions 7, 12, 27, 30, 34, 51, and 64. These are the seven missions that pit you against "death generals." Mission 64 can be quite tough, but the key is to always cast Bio (Poison) on him and take advantage of his regenerative periods to heal and enhance yourself. Make sure to block his big attack with 3 Sentinels/Defenders or you're toast. ++++++++ Name: Floraphobe Description: Toppled a green terror and cut an oversized succulent down to size. Details: Complete mission 54 against the Gigantuar. Before this mission becomes available you have to watch a cutscene involving a Cactuar. You can reach the area that activates this by jumping up onto the plateau from the semi-circular area full of giant turtle varieties. Or, you can leap there by Chocobo from an adjacent cliff. It's on the far north of the plains. This mission is rated B but it's one of the harder ones. My suggestion is to equip items like Speed Sash and Energy Sash to gain the Lucky Breaker ability (Instant Chain in English), and then retry until you get an early stagger/break and take him down fast. ++++++++ Name: Natural Selector Description: Passed Titan's trials. Details: The Titan's trials are missions 35-51. Completing mission 34 grants access to the area where the trials take place, and completing mission 30 grants access to the area containing mission 34. Chocobo required. The Titan's trials consist of a series of paths containing missions. Once you take every possible path and complete 35-50, mission 51 becomes available on every path, at the point where you go to the final mission on the path. For example, if you choose a path that goes 35->36->38->41->45, then mission 51 will appear after completing mission 41 but before selecting mission 45. Mission 51 can be overcome by tossing physical defense items on Snow and using him as a permanent Sentinel/Defender, while using the two others to cast Deprotect and buff themselves. Then you simply chip away at him slowly while Snow tanks for you. ++++++++ Name: Dorgann's Trophy Description: Completed all high-level Cie'th Stone missions. Details: Complete all missions of rank B. That corresponds to missions 16, 17, 23-27, 29-34, 38, 40, 42, 43, 47, 50, 54 and 58. ++++++++ Name: Galuf's Grail Description: Completed all Cie'th Stone missions. Details: Pretty self explanatory. Complete all 64 missions with any rank. ++++++++ Name: Limit Breaker Description: Dealt 100,000+ damage with a single attack. Details: This literally means a single hit. Not a single chain, a single combo, or a single multi-hit move. The easiest way to do this is to find an enemy with a high break percentage, break them, summon Bahamut with Fang, and then immediately go into Gestalt/Driving mode and use Mega Flare. Deprotecting the enemy first is a plus. Unless you equip a Genji Glove, characters are normally limited to 99,999 damage, but summons are not. If you've got high stats you might even get this trophy by accident using a summon (I did). With Genji Glove and a high level Crystarium you might also have luck using Highwind with Fang. It can easily do 999,999 damage with a fully upgraded Kain's Lance and accessories increasing physical attack. ++++++++ Name: Adamant Will Description: Felled a heavyweight of the lowerworld wilds. Details: Defeat a Long Gui. Upon clearing missions 56-62, all of the Adamantoises on the plains except one will turn into Long Guis. They look similar, except they are blue and much tougher. To take this behemoth down, make sure you have high stats and pretty much all your roles maxed. Have a Paradigm/Optima with three Sentinels/Defenders handy for whenever he casts Ultima, Quake, or most any attack for that matter. Take out his legs (they are susceptible to Poison) and once he falls down, debuff him like crazy with things like Deprotect, Weak (Imperil), etc. Slow is also a bonus even before you take out his legs. Use Power Smoke and Barrier Smoke (Fortisol and Aegisol) to make things easier, or use enhancing spells to power up (especially Haste and Bravery). Most likely you will need to knock him down at least two times even with powerful weapons, and recast buffs and debuffs. If you need him to fall down just one more time, you can use your summon which instantly makes him fall. It's also a good way to heal your party if you're about to lose. ++++++++ Name: Master's Seal Description: Fully developed all characters. Details: Learn all abilities for all 6 roles for all 6 characters, and level each role to 5. Yeah, that's a lot of CP. Grinding is not recommended before finishing the game. Growth Egg (obtained from mission 55) will double your earned CP when equipped, so make good use of it. Mission 55 can be cheaply beaten early on by using Death with Vanille until he dies in one hit. If you die before that, retry. Chocobo required. Mission 55 can be found at Oerba Village. Note that level 10 of the Crystarium does not unlock until you finish the game so it is not possible to obtain the trophy before doing so anyway. ------------- Gold Trophies ------------- Name: Instrument of Change Description: Witnessed the dawn of a new crystal legend. Details: Obtained automatically upon completion of the game. Make sure you watch the credits all the way through and save the game afterwards! Special: Unlocks Hope's XMB theme. ++++++++ Name: L'Cie Paragon Description: Earned a 5-star ranking for all Cie'th Stone missions. Details: All 64 missions must be completed with the highest ranking of 5 stars. Missions can be retried as many times as you wish. Generally I recommend being close to maxed out in the Crystarium and having good weapons and accessories. Many of the battles get a lot simpler this way. In rare cases, stronger equipment may hurt your chances, since the required time for 5 stars decreases as your characters gain attack and magic. In particular, mission 64 is much easier with weak weapons by letting poison do most of the work on him. The same might go for easy missions for which you are incredibly overleveled. Mission 35 is hard to 5-star with high stats without using a Sneak Smoke (Deceptisol). Special: Unlocks Snow's XMB theme. ++++++++ Name: Treasure Hunter Description: Held every weapon and accessory. Details: This one is the most time consuming. You only need to have owned every weapon and accessory at SOME point in time. You by no means need to hold all of them simultaneously. Also, all tier-3 weapons for each character have the same name, and thus only one of each is required for the trophy. Note that no item is only available at a certain point in time. It is not possible to miss an item in a certain area and thus lose it forever. It is, however, possible to obtain an item and sell it without upgrading it, and not be able to recover it. In such an instance you would never be able to obtain the upgrade. This goes specifically for the elemental rings (Frost Ring, Ember Ring, etc). You have one chance to obtain them again by deconstructing the elemental absorption charms, (all of which are found as treasures on Gran Pulse, so you can't miss them), but if you sell those too you're fresh out of luck. My advice is to never sell any accessory (unless you have repeats). To actually receive this trophy you have to talk to Bhakti, so don't have a heart attack if you don't get it as soon as your inventory is complete. Special: Unlocks Fang's XMB theme. ++++++++ Name: Loremaster Description: Discerned the full attributes of 100 enemies. Details: You basically need to use Libra on 100 separate enemies and completely fill out their information. Using Libra does not guarantee that the enemy's attributes will be fully discerned. Sometimes it still doesn't reveal things like item drops. Fighting an enemy more than once helps fill in extra information in such cases, as well as using Libra multiple times. Fortunately there are well over 100 enemy types in the game. If you use Libra as often as possible, you will probably have no trouble with this trophy. Note that it is technically possible to obtain the trophy without using Libra at all, but it is much harder, and Libra should be used on all enemies either way. Special: Unlocks Sazh's XMB theme. ++++++++ Name: Superstar Description: Earned a 5-star ranking in the battle to determine the world's fate Details: Earn a 5-star ranking on the final form of the final boss. This is Orphan's form where he is invincible when not in stagger/break state. The rankings of the previous two battles are inconsequential. If you're having trouble with this, come back later after filling out level 10 of the Crystarium and obtaining stronger items. He'll go down in a breeze. You can do the final battle as many times as you want even after beating the game, so don't worry about that. Special: Unlocks Lightning's XMB theme. --------------- Platinum Trophy --------------- Name: Ultimate Hero Description: Acquired all trophies. Details: Self-explanatory. If you're curious about how long it takes, I got my platinum trophy in 96:40. I by no means rushed through the game so it is very possible to do it in even less time. Special: Unlocks Serah's XMB theme. ========================== Frequently Asked Questions ========================== Q: Can I keep playing after I beat the game? A: Yes, the game lets you save after beating it, after which you can return to Gran Pulse for missions or fight the final boss again. Q: Are there any missable trophies? A: It is possible (though difficult) to lock yourself out of the Treasure Hunter trophy. See the details for that trophy and the below question. Don't worry about missions - they are all replayable. The Taejin Tower missions that were part of the story become available again after you beat the game. Q: I'm looking for in the shops, but I can't find it anywhere! What's going on? A: First, make sure you're not looking for an item that's an upgraded version of something else (though in a few cases upgraded items can be bought). Second, make sure you have all the shops. Most unlock through the main story, but missions 7 and 46 unlock shops as well. For information about that, see the Useful Shops section at the beginning of this guide. Finally, if you're trying to puchase elemental rings or absorption charms, those are not found in shops. I hope you didn't sell off all of them, because you can lock yourself out of the Treasure Hunter trophy that way. See the info for that particular trophy for more information. Q: Do you have any recommendations for how to go about upgrading everything? A: Generally the most effective way is to increase the multiplier on an item to 3x and then slap some Particle Accelerators or Ultracompact Reactors on it for massive experience. This is especially useful on weapons since they require tons of experience to max out. Since both of the above items decrease the multiplier, the most efficient way is to use many at once instead of one by one, otherwise you'll have to use items to pump up the multiplier again each time. However, this also requires that you know how much experience each item takes to max out, or at least what level it maxes out at. For this reason I highly recommend looking up a chart of the experience breakdowns of various items. If you have the Japanese version and understand the language, the wiki in my Acknowledgments section contains this information. Otherwise I'm sure other guides will list much of this information. Naturally for accessories that max out at level 2 you won't want to waste lots of money on expensive materials that are meant for serious leveling. Also note that the amount of experience you get from the materials can vary depending on the specific item you are trying to upgrade. As for increasing the multiplier, the easiest way to reach 3x is by buying 36 of one of the following: Sturdy Bone, Barbed Tail, Vibrant Ooze. They are all found at the Creature Comforts shop, and 36 of them will run you 2,880 gil. Q: I completed the requirements for a trophy but the game won't give it to me! What's going on!? Help! A: First make sure you did in fact satisfy the conditions and that it's not just a matter of quitting out of a menu before the game acknolwedges it. Next make sure it's not a trophy that requires you to talk to Bhakti to receive. If none of these things apply, you're unfortunately a victim of the trophy glitch. See the Trophy Glitch Warning section at the start of the guide. Q: It takes so much CP to max out my roles! Do you have any suggestions for speeding up the process? A: First of all, I don't recommend grinding AT ALL before completing the game. It's mostly a waste of time. That being said, the first thing you should do is go get the Growth Egg which doubles your CP gained if equipped. It is obtained by beating mission 55. Mission 55 can be cheaply beaten early on by using Death with Vanille until he dies in one hit. If you die before that, retry. Chocobo required. To survive the first attack, start the battle with a Barrier Smoke (Aegisol). Mission 55 can be found at Oerba Village. Note that the mission will not be available if you have not viewed the cutscene involving the Ochu. Ochu is found in an area only accesible by Chocobo. You have to jump way up onto a ledge in the plains. It also leads to many missions including the Titan's trials. And (not by coincidence), it is the location of the mission 55 target. Once you have Growth Egg, there are different ways you can try to level up. One of the more popular methods was unfortunately taken out of the English version, which was to fight Ochus. Sadly, it is now impossible to pre-empt them. Personally the best method I've found came from some advice I came across on the forums, which involves fighting Rust Puddings and Cryohedrons in the Mah'habara Mines. If you're weak this is a fast way to make between seven and eleven thousand CP per battle lasting 5-15 seconds. The ideal spot is at a place where you descend a small staircase and find three Cryohedrons at the bottom. A bit further down the path there are three Rust Puddings and one Cryohedron. They are only a few seconds walking distance apart and yet respawn every time you go back and forth. At an average of 10 seconds per battle and 10 seconds traveling, that's about 17 thousand CP every 30 seconds, or about 2.5 million CP per hour. Finally, if you've already leveled up considerably, you might want to try the Adamantoises. They require you to already be quite strong, but they will yield 80,000 CP each using the Growth Egg, plus they drop precious Platinum Ingots and Trapezohedrons. Q: I need tons and tons of money to upgrade all of my weapons and accessories! How should I go about farming gil? A: Personally, I fought Adamantoises over and over. You need to be strong to kill them efficiently, although using a summon helps, but then requires you to gain back the TP after every battle. I used the 450k gil from Bhakti to upgrade Fang's weapon and some physical attack items to help me fight them better. There are videos on Youtube on how to take one down. You basically want to get Fang's attack high enough so that you can break/stagger each leg quickly and then down it in one blow with Highwind. Once it falls, debuff it with Weak (Imperil), Deprotect and Defaith before switching to Ravagers/Blasters. Keep pounding him in this formation until the gauge reaches 900% or more, then lay on the damage with Commandos/Attackers. You should have enough time to finish him with another Highwind before he gets back up. Unless you're really strong you will want to have Bravery and Haste on your characters too, so either start with a Power Smoke (Fortisol) or start with Synergists/Enhancers. Alternately, many people find it simpler and maybe even more efficient to fight the Sacrifices right before the final boss. They drop Perfume which sells for a decent price, plus they drop an expensive catalyst ingredient occasionally too. But above all, equip Collector Catalog and Connoisseur Catalog (Good Choice and Best Choice in Japanese). Collector Catalog will increase your item drop rate, while Connoisseur Catalog will increase your rare item drop rate. Both are extremely useful and will make a huge difference, especially since the Adamantoises don't drop very often. If you don't have those items yet, you can get Collector Catalog from mission 8 or from the shop. Connoisseur Catalog is obtained by upgrading Collector Catalog. ======= Contact ======= Feel free to email me with questions, comments, or suggestions.
