Closing & Legal 0500 ============================================================================\\ //============================================ SECTION 01 - INTRODUCTION 0100 Welcome. This is the first time I've written something for a game for a number of years. Hopefully I'm not too rusty... but I thought an easter egg list for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (henceforth MGS4) would be a nice little task. Ironically in of itself I started most of my internet adventures only some months before the release of Metal Gear Solid in 1998 and I think it was one of the first games I looked for extra info on when I got my own internet connection that year (prior to that for two years I browsed at school and at friends places... cheers for letting me suck up your net hours people :D ). For fans of the series, the title is much like the other titles in that the development team at Kojima Productions have crammed the game full with hidden little extras, features, unlockables, and other bonus' items. This guide will hopefully list as many if not all of them as possible. I began cataloging the secrets I came across to pass onto a few friends when I began and since then have putting more down that I've found as I replayed as well. Clearly there are spoilers in this list, so I suggest not looking into this guide until you've at least finished the game once. I've planned to breakdown of the guide into two halves, covering everything you can find in one of two ways - either in order via the chapters, or by content should you wish to be just looking for specific items. Beyond that is a list of all of the unlockables and extras beyond the hidden items and easter eggs located in the game. I've listed each chapter under a search code at this stage. Once I reach the final version each secret will be given a search code beyond this. You can search using Ctrl+F and then entering the 4 digit code. For example the next chapter is 0200 so you would place that in the search box to be taken to it. If you find something which needs adding you know of and which you cannot find listed, please feel free to contact me by e-mail - the address is: mgs4secret@gmail.com Have fun & enjoy! - Rob ============================================================================\\ //================================================= SECTION 02 - VIA ACT 0200 This section begins the lengthy listing of the secrets in their act order. The first section however covers some general items that are either open to being done at any time or multiple times. If you're looking for a specific category of secrets, then check out Section 03 - Via Content (found under search code 0300) There isn't much more to say here, so I'll just continue forward at this stage. ============================================================================\\ //============================================== SECTION 02.01 - GENERAL 0201 ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Change The Channel! Change The View! Bonus - None Effect - None Press buttons on your controller to change channels between each of the Logan made videos before the game starts, as well as two other familiar looking channels... HIDEO1 and HIDEO2. Once you're in the game, you can use the right analogue stick and the d-pad on your controller to zoom in and move around any cutscenes you want. CATAGORY - SECRET BUTTON PRESSES / MGS1 & MGS2 / 4TH WALL ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ "You Enjoy All The Killing, Don't You!?" Bonus - None Effect - Negative Psyche Killing more than 50 enemies in any act will launch Old Snake into a flash of PTSD, hearing a flashback of Liquid from MGS and causing him to throw up. The effect of all this will be negative on Snake's psyche, but it's a cool little throw back to Liquid's taunting of Snake in Metal Gear Solid. CATAGORY - SNAKE / FLASHBACK / MGS1 & MGS2 / STRESS AND PSYCHE ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Fun with the Beauties Bonus - None (except for taking Photo) Effect - None Avoiding any of the inner Beauties once defeating their outer form will cause you to go into a white world eventually, where a timer will begin to drop. From in here you can do a few things. - Camera Pulling out your digital camera will allow you to take photos of them. They will begin posing for photos for you. - iPod Putting on "Oishii Chuhan Seikatsu" will cause the beauties to dance for a short while. Letting the timer run out on both of these will just cause the beauties to die. CATAGORY - SPECIFIC / DANCING / PHOTOS / WOMEN ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Dancing Sunny Bonus - None Effect - None Bringing up your pause menu, you will note there is a camera showing where Sunny currently is aboard the Nomad. Playing "Oishii Chuhan Seikatsu" on your iPod and then going to your pause menu again, you'll note that she is now dancing to the song. CATAGORY - WOMEN / SPECIFIC / DANCING ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Rosemary's Breasts Bonus - None Effect - None Once you gain Rosemary as a Codec contact, if you call her while you have the SIXAXIS enabled... shake your controller around. It will, for some odd reason, effect her breasts. Funny enough she doesn't seem to notice. CATAGORY - WOMEN / CODEC / SIXAXIS ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Extra Passcodes Bonus - Various Effect - Various These codes can be used under the Extras menu once you have finished the game once. Konami has noted they will released these codes at various times in the coming months. Bonus - iPod Songs Using the extras menu, enter the following passwords for more iPod songs. Presidential Codes The following codes earn you some Harry Gregson-Williams tracks from MGS4 and could originally be found from the official MGS4 OST. george - "gekko" theodore - "midnight shadow" thomas - "desperate chase" abraham - "mobs alive" Bonus - Weapons* mekakorkkk - unlocks the SOCOM Mk23 pistol. mnsoymsyhn - unlocks the Mosin-Nagant rifle. deskyhstyl - unlocks the Long Barreled Desert Eagle * As listed on Kotaku.com CATAGORY - PASSWORDS AND PASSCODES / EXTRAS ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Extra Batteries Bonus - Extra Battery Length Bonus - Extra Batteries Effect - Longer life to battery items (Solid Eye, MkII, etc.) You can extend the life of all of your battery use items by locating and collecting all of the extra batteries found in each mission briefing between act 1 and act 4 using the MkII. Each one will be noted in the overall act briefing, however in general expect to find one each act brief. CATAGORY - GAMEPLAY / HIDDEN ITEMS ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Motion Actors Bonus - None Effect - None Pressing R2 during character intros shows the motion capture actor instead of the characters voice actor. If you push it again, it will return to the voice actor. CATAGORY - HIDDEN & EASTER / SECRET BUTTON PRESSES ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Regaining Psyche Bonus - None Effect - Quick Psyche Regain Anytime Snake looses psyche during cutscenes, rapidly press X to regain the amount lost. This will be allowed to be done until the health bar area disappears. There are a couple of instances in the game where this doesn't work, normally as the amount is automatically regained through plot requirements (ie. Snake injects himself with the syringe, etc.). If it doesn't work on a particular event this is the reason why. CATAGORY - STRESS AND PSYCHE / SECRET BUTTON PRESSES ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Dropping Stress Quickly Bonus - None Effect - Loss of Stress Snake is a creature of old habit, so placing him inside his second favorite item - a cardboard box - will drop his stress levels quicker than just sitting outside alone. Smoking, clearly Snake's favorite old habit, will also have the same effect as well (along with some of the older traits, like increasing his stability when sniping and others) however as always this comes off with the trade of health. CATAGORY - STRESS AND PSYCHE / CARDBOARD BOXES / SMOKING ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Nightmares About Death Bonus - None Effect - None If you die and continue, immediately call Rosemary once you're back in the game. Snake will sometimes have a conversation with her about nightmares of being killed and coming back to life. CATAGORY - 4TH WALL / WOMEN / CODEC / CONTINUE ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Holding up FROGS Bonus - None Effect - None As per with any character, you can also hold up any of Liquid's FROGS... however as these enemies are female, body searches will result in some interesting situations... either resulting at giggling, compliments, or insults towards Snake's handling of them. CATAGORY - WOMEN / GAMEPLAY ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Revenge Of The Rations! Bonus - None Effect - None Equip a ration and then call Rosemary to possibly have an interesting conversation regarding home cooking. If you played MGS2 and did the same with Raiden, then you'll understand where this is coming from. CATAGORY - 4TH WALL / WOMEN / CODEC ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Digital Camera Bonus - Digital Camera Effect - Photo Ability A digital camera is located in Acts 1-4 Briefing's, behind the desk beside Otacon that Sunny quite often sits at. It is suggested unless you really need it early on to grab it during the Act 4 brief as you will find bonus photos already on the camera when checked. CATAGORY - HIDDEN ITEMS ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Cheaper War Economy Bonus - None Effect - Cheaper Items From Drebin You'll get a note about this anyway, but if you play the game on a Wednesday or Sunday, most items sold or unlocked by Drebin are 20% off. This is operated by your PS3 settings, so if you wish to cheat this you can set your day/clock to one of these to benefit at all times. Additionally Act 5 slashes items sold in half as well, making for decent bargains on many items you may have been saving up for. CATAGORY - DREBIN ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ PS3 & PSP Cameo Bonus - None Effect - None In all of the breifings a PS3 can be found on the table upstairs, however it's not connected to anything to play it on. During Act 2 Sunny will unpack a box of items, including a PSP. Sometimes you may find her playing it during the briefing’s... on it she is playing Konami's Penguin Adventure, a MSX title from 1986. This was the first game that Hideo Kojima ever worked on. You can see footage of the game at the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5T3woiAcaE0 CATAGORY - 4TH WALL / HIDDEN & EASTER ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Hidden Music Bonus - None Effect - None In 4 of the 5 Act Briefing's, the one's all in the Nomad, if you take the MkII (or MkIII in Act 4) upstairs and head to the tape player on the table you can use the arm on the robot to turn it on. Each Act you will play different tracks. Each will play in an order, or if you don't like a track then you can use the arm to switch to the next track. The tracks vary from the hidden MGS3 tracks, Policenauts, original MGS tracks, HideoChan radio segments (in Japanese sorry), and the odd track from other Kojima Productions titles. Some are available as iPod tunes, while others appear to be on the radio only (for now?). CATAGORY - 4TH WALL / HIDDEN & EASTER / MUSIC ============================================================================\\ //====================================== SECTION 02.02 - ACT 1 BRIEFING 0202 Act 1's briefing doesn't happen automatically, but can be viewed from the Briefing menu anytime after saving in the opening of Act 1. ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Face Camo Bonus - More Face Camo Effect - None Once you've gained the mask from Laughing Octopus, you can go back and earn mask's during Act 1 and Act 2's briefing. The first of these you can get is from bumping into Campbell during the brief with the MkII. If it doesn't appear to work, then you can use the L1+R1 option to shock him. CATAGORY - EXTRAS / MASKS ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Change Channels Bonus - None Effect - None Using the MkII, you can use L1 by the table near the TV to change the channel from the video of Campbell to a video of Minami Akina. CATAGORY - SECRET BUTTON PRESS / WOMEN ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Act 1 Brief Items Bonus - Various Effect - None As in most of the briefings, extra items can be found, which always include an extra battery and a Boktai/Lunar Knights iPod tune. In Act 1 the following items can be found during the brief. Battery Camera iPod Tune Ammo Ration CATAGORY - HIDDEN ITEMS / MUSIC ============================================================================\\ //================================================ SECTION 02.03 - ACT 1 0203 ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Cupping The Statue Bonus - None Effect - None In the beginning of Act 1, when you come across the statue you can leap up and hide as using your Octacamo as one of the statues. Snake will cup his hand over one of the statues, however if you do this multiple times the piece of the statue will break off. Do this when people are around and you'll be in trouble. CATAGORY - GAMEPLAY / SNAKE ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ He never used CQC Before? Bonus - None Effect - None If you keep calling Otacon and Snake will eventually explain about him using CQC which he's never used until this point. CATAGORY - CODEC / OTACON / SNAKE / 4TH WALL ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Return To The Militia Bonus - Miltia Outfit Effect - General Disguise Snake looses his disguise as he fights against the first Gekko's during the opening of the game, however he can find the outfit again during the underground base area of the Militia stronghold. In a locker located in the North-East communications room... there are also a number of strong weapons located here. The costume can only be used during Act 1. CATAGORY - SPECIFIC / HIDDEN ITEMS / GAMEPLAY ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Rolling The Barrel Bonus - None Effect - Negative Psyche As was displayed during the 20th Anniversary demo display in mid 2007. If you get in the barrel once you have it and spend a lot of time rolling around on the ground in, you'll likely make Snake sick. This also has a negative effect on his psyche. CATAGORY - SPECIFIC / HIDDEN & EASTER / CARDBOARD BOXES / GAMEPLAY ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Some Things Never Change Bonus - None Effect - None If you stare at in first person or attack Meryl during the escape from the FROGS she'll say some familiar sounding lines if you've played through the original Metal Gear Solid. CATAGORY - MGS1 & MGS2 / WOMEN / HIDDEN & EASTER ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Hidden Items Bonus - Various Effect - None If you jump the gap rather than dropping down after Rat Patrol straight away after Akiba clears the lasers, you'll find a small little area where you can pick up some extra hidden items. CATAGORY - GAMEPLAY / HIDDEN ITEMS ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Mantis Appears Bonus - None Effect - None During the cutscene which introduces the B&B Unit late in Act 1, when you get L1 sequence which allows Snake to look at Screaming Mantis, push your left analogue stick to the left to see a ghostly appearance of Psycho Mantis briefly. CATAGORY - SECRET BUTTON PRESSES / MGS1 & MGS2 / SPECIFIC ============================================================================\\ //====================================== SECTION 02.04 - ACT 2 BRIEFING 0204 ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Face Camo Bonus - Face Camo Effect - None Bump into Otacon or Sunny to get extra face camo's for Snake. If you don't do this during the Act 2 briefing, you'll still have a chance during the Act 3 one. However you can only do this after beating Laughing Octopus at least once. You can get this after that by loading it in the briefing menu or replaying the game. CATAGORY - EXTRAS / MASKS ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Change Channels Bonus - None Effect - None Using the MkII, you can use L1 by the table near the TV to change the channel from the video of Campbell to a video of Minami Akina. CATAGORY - SECRET BUTTON PRESS / WOMEN ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Act 2 Brief Items Bonus - Various Effect - None As in most of the briefings, extra items can be found, which always include an extra battery and a Boktai/Lunar Knights iPod tune. In Act 2 the following items can be found during the brief. Battery Camera (If not already collected) iPod Tune Ammo Noodles CATAGORY - HIDDEN ITEMS / MUSIC ============================================================================\\ //================================================ SECTION 02.05 - ACT 2 0205 ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Save the Rebels! Bonus - Various Effect - None If you manage to save the rebel's at the beginning for long enough they will allow you access to an extra room which includes a new disguise which matches the local rebels for Act 2, plus numerous weapons and ammo. CATAGORY - SPECIFIC / HIDDEN ITEMS / GAMEPLAY ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Destroy The Power Station! Bonus - Extra Location/Items Effect - None If you blow up the generator using C4 or if the rebels manage to get in and do it themselves, you can access an extra area of the Power Station by climbing the accessible tower and then using the power line to shimmy over to another area. The area is filled with extra weapons and ammo for you to collect. When you're done you need to use the crates along side the wall to get up and over. CATAGORY - SPECIFIC / HIDDEN ITEMS / GAMEPLAY ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Hidden Posters Bonus - None Effect - Psyche Regain Once you arrive at the manor and get inside, if you shoot off one of the paintings in the hall near the stairs or check above the bed in the main bedroom you will find a poster of Minami Akina. Snake will mention her by name once you're looking directly at them in first person and his stats will all begin to recover. CATAGORY - SPECIFIC / HIDDEN ITEMS / WOMEN / STRESS AND PSYCHE ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Hidden First Person Views Bonus - None Effect - Psyche Regain There are two hidden L1 first person views close together once you meet Naomi in the lab. The first is when Snake drops his cigarette, which reveals he's taking a closer look at something other than the dropped smoke. The second, just after Snake is told he has not long and his psyche drops, press L1 again to see another look at Naomi. CATAGORY - SECRET BUTTON PRESSES / WOMEN / STRESS AND PSYCHE ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ The bed's not for rest it seems Bonus - None Effect - None If you lie down on the bed during the Octopus Beauty sequence and she will straddle Snake, however no rest will come of this... instead it will just lead to eventual loss of health. CATAGORY - WOMEN / HIDDEN & EASTER / GAMEPLAY ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Crop Circle Bonus Bonus - 1000dp Effect - None While tracking Naomi, you'll come to the point where you need to cross the river to continue. If you go to Snake's left and follow the river up, and then turn back the way you came from you should see a grassy hill. Climb it and you'll get a bonus flashback of the AI Colonel from MGS2 discussing glowing lights in the sky. Doing this will net you a 1000dp bonus. CATAGORY - FLASHBACK / GAMEPLAY / DREBIN ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Handprints Bonus - Handprint Camo Effect - None Once you come to the area where there is a guard over a Claymore mine, dispatch of him as you wish, then switch your Solid Eye to Night Vision if it's not already. You should note a set of handprints going off in one of the directions. Follow this path and you'll come across a metal plate covered in the handprints of some of the development team. If you lie on it for a bit you'll also get the handprint camo, which you can manually save for use at anytime in the future. CATAGORY - SPECIFIC / HIDDEN ITEMS / GAMEPLAY / 4TH WALL ============================================================================\\ //====================================== SECTION 02.06 - ACT 3 BRIEFING 0206 ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Face Camo Bonus - Face Camo Effect - None Bump into Otacon, Sunny, and Naomi to get extra face camo's for Snake. CATAGORY - EXTRAS / MASKS ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ You Pervert! Bonus - None Effect - None Just a quick note.... Otacon's webcamera is pointed at Naomi's cleavage, and he makes an attempt to cover up the fact he's has this viewpoint before she realizes. CATAGORY - OTACON / WOMEN ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Act 3 Brief Items Bonus - Various Effect - None As in most of the briefings, extra items can be found, which always include an extra battery and a Boktai/Lunar Knights iPod tune. In Act 3 the following items can be found during the brief. Battery Camera (If not already collected) iPod Tune Ammo X2 Compress CATAGORY - HIDDEN ITEMS / MUSIC ============================================================================\\ //================================================ SECTION 02.07 - ACT 3 0207 ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ It's Not Just For Raiden Bonus - None Effect - None If you race to the park before the Resistance member Snake can hide as a statue and the resistance member will urinate on the you. Sadly Campbell won't send you his condolences this time. CATAGORY - SNAKE / GAMEPLAY / SPECIFIC / MGS1 & MGS2 ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ It Isn't Just Snake Bonus - None Effect - None Once Eva is getting ready to go and you see the "mystery man" in the trenchcoat, keep you finger held down on L1. You'll get a bonus first person view, this time from the viewpoint of the mystery coat "man." CATAGORY - SECRET BUTTON PRESSES ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ So Obvious Second Time Around Bonus - None Effect - None You'll have it explained to you by the end, but keep an "eye" on the body of Big Boss to come to a possible realization on what you're actually looking at. CATAGORY - HIDDEN & EASTER ============================================================================\\ //====================================== SECTION 02.08 - ACT 4 BRIEFING 0208 ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Digital Camera Redux Bonus - Digital Camera Effect - None The camera has now moved from behind Sunny's desk to being found on the floor upstairs. If you pick up the camera now rather than earlier in the game, there are several photos of Sunny and Naomi bonding, mostly over cooking, on the camera when you get it. Definitely worth the laugh. CATAGORY - HIDDEN ITEMS ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Act 4 Brief Items Bonus - Various Effect - None As in most of the briefings, extra items can be found, which always include an extra battery and a Boktai/Lunar Knights iPod tune. In Act 4 the following items can be found during the brief. Battery Camera (If not already collected) iPod Tune Ammo Regain CATAGORY - HIDDEN ITEMS / MUSIC ============================================================================\\ //================================================ SECTION 02.09 - ACT 4 0209 ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Return To Shadow Moses Bonus - 1000dp per Flashback Effect - Nostalgic Memories During this act there are numerous flashbacks to Metal Gear Solid, where each one you get will earn you 1000dp. The criteria for them to enact is that you're roughly in the correct spot and no alert mode is currently underway. Most. if not all. of the sound flashbacks appear to be taken from the remake of the original game, "Metal Gear Solid" The Twin Snakes" which appeared on the Nintendo GameCube in 2004. The list of locations is as follows: - Entrance Elevator area, fenced off area on the south of the Heliport. Snake's original entrance to the Heliport brings up discussions between Campbell, Naomi, Mei Ling, and Snake. - Middle of Heliport Reminds Snake of Liquid leaving in a snowstorm in the Hind D. - West storage area/Stairwell on East "A surveillance camera!?" flashback (hit X, only appears if music is still playing). - Using either vent system instead of the open doorway. Snake remembers first contact with Master Miller, who was actually Liquid. - Use the stairwell in the Tank Hangar Conversations with Meryl, her opening the hangar doors. - Entrance to Otacon's Lab Frank Jaeger's (Grey Fox) bloody entrance to Otacon's Lab. - Otacon's Lab Lockers Grey Fox confronting Snake and Otacon, as well as Otacon and Snake's introduction. - Trench in the communication tower A area Wounded Meryl's speech to Snake to go on living for others. After the Crying Wolf fight. - Com Tower A Platform, walk around the outside of the highest area. Liquid's introduction to Snake while piloting the Hind. - Crashed Hind D on the North-east of the Map Liquid's defeat in the Hind, "see you in hell" event. - In front of Com Tower B, walking closer to the western side. "What am I fighting for? What are we fighting for?" Otacon after Wolf's demise. - Elevator into the steel molding area. Revelations of Naomi and Master Miller. - Near the doors where you fought Vulcan Raven, walk back towards them to trigger it. "The path you walk on has no end" Vulcan Raven's final words to Snake. CATAGORY - FLASHBACK / MGS1 & MGS2 / DREBIN ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Just Like Old Times Bonus - None Effect - None Adjusting the camera above Snake's head in the Heliport or Tank Hangar area's and running around a bit may result in Snake's nostalgic side getting the better of him. Additionally if you get the Mk23 SOCOM from under the truck near the heliport then equip it, you will likely find him saying similar things. Finally, aside from this and the flashbacks - if you've got a good memory or recently replayed the game then you'll find a large number of standard items (ammo, rations, etc.) are in the same places as in the original title. CATAGORY - MGS1 & MGS2 / HIDDEN & EASTER / 4TH WALL ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Calling Otacon Bonus - None Effect - None The conversations between Otacon and Snake in Moses are always interesting. Whenever you enter a new area you should call him to get some interesting conversation about the events 9 years previous on the island. However here are the most interesting areas to call him in: - After following Rats around in the vents. A discussion will follow regarding Snake following rats around in the original title (additionally as another easter egg, the rats in Moses display ! marks above their heads like in the original - no other animal in the series has since). - Arrival in the Tank Hangar Otacon may occasionally begin discussing the Gekko's lack of mobility indoors and their alternative to interior scouting. This also includes the only mention of Nastasha since her book's appearance in MGS2. - Once you get to the Canyon or just arrived in the Nuke Storage Otacon discusses with Snake taking on a tank just by himself. - After beating Crying Wolf in the snowfield. Otacon discusses with Snake, taking on a Hind-D just by himself. CATAGORY - CODEC / OTACON / MGS1 & MGS2 ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Easter Island Returns Bonus - None Effect - None There was no way they couldn't leave out the statues from Metal Gear Solid 4, and they make a return... kind of... in the game. Once you get down to the B2 level of the Nuke Storage, on your way to Otacon's lab... look through the first door along the hall. You will see a statue sitting inside, more or less where the original statue was in MGS1. For a little background... please read this note I made for the MGS2 Secrets Guide by Kynes in 2001: They are called Moai, and they are a reoccurring Easter Egg in Konami games. As I was once told to think of them more as "Easter (Egg) Island Statues" because of their common place of being hidden in various Konami titles. As far as I (and others it seems) can recall, the Moai's first appearance in a Konami title were as enemies in the 80's arcade title Gradius (also known as Nemesis). Since then they've appeared in games as bonus items, wall decorations, statues in areas of course (like in MGS and MGS2), and even again as enemies, especially during the last few "PlayStation" years of games. They've become another one of Konami's continual secrets like the old "Konami Code" was (which also appeared first in the home edition of Gradius). And... who knows, maybe there is a Konami Code buried in MGS4 somewhere.* * And before anyone asks, yes I did try uuddlrlrba as a password and no it didn't do anything sadly :/ CATAGORY - HIDDEN & EASTER / MGS1 & MGS2 / 4TH WALL ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Having A Shocking Time Bonus - None Effect - Negative Health/Psyche (if used on yourself) You can use the MkIII to play with the destroyed switchboard. This can be used to shock the pursuing Gekko after visiting Otacon's lab, or if you're standing on the correct part of the hallway - to shock Snake himself. CATAGORY - SNAKE / SPECIFIC / GAMEPLAY ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Correct Incorrect Codes Bonus - Various Effect - None Instead of entering the code Otacon gave you, you can enter other codes which will give you extras instead. A sound effect will let you know you've earnt something. The known codes are as follows: 78925 - Gives you the opening music from Policenauts - "Old L.A. 2040" 13462 - Gives you the Policenauts ending music "End of the Dark". 14893 - Gives you 100,000 free Drebin Points. 12893 - Will apparently give 20% off* (*Was given to me by a friend online. I haven't yet tested it, if you have and it works let me know. It's on my test list.) CATAGORY - PASSWORDS AND PASSCODES / MUSIC / DREBIN ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Return To The Tank Hangar Bonus - Various Effect - None After turning on the systems in Otacon's lab, backtrack to the Tank Hangar. A doorway upstairs which was closed is now opened and there are goodies inside to collect including an additional iPod tune. CATAGORY - HIDDEN ITEMS / MUSIC ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Animal Cruelty Again Bonus - None Effect - None Attempt to kill any of the wolves in the area then call Otacon and Rosemary for some interesting codec conversations. CATAGORY - SNAKE / CODEC / OTACON / WOMEN ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ More MGS2 Flashbacks Bonus - None Effect - None During the Rose/Raiden audio conversation after Raiden stops the Patriots-Sub continues to press X until the scene is over for hidden flashbacks of the ending of MGS2. CATAGORY - FLASHBACKS / MGS1 & MGS2 / SECRET BUTTON PRESSES ============================================================================\\ //====================================== SECTION 02.10 - ACT 5 BRIEFING 0210 ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Screen Adjust Bonus - None Effect - None Not much to do in this brief unfortunately. All you can do is use the 2 analog sticks to move the projector screen around. CATAGORY - SECRET BUTTON PRESSES ============================================================================\\ //================================================ SECTION 02.11 - ACT 5 0211 ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ Exist? Bonus - None Effect - None If you die at any stage on this Act, leave yourself on the continue screen without doing anything and Exit will change to Exist. If you click on Exist and you'll hear Liquid say something to you (it'll be one of a couple of things) and then you'll be prompted to choose again. CATAGORY - SPECIFIC / HIDDEN & EASTER / CONTINUE ______ \_______________________________________________________________________ The Return Of Mantis Bonus - None Effect - None
The Screaming Mantis fight is so massively chock fill of secrets, easter eggs,
and extras it almost needs it's own section.
Firstly while the syringe stops Snake from being controlled, if you use it
straight away you'll miss some interesting conversations. Don't use it and try
the following:
- Try to change your controller to port 2 for a Codec call.
- Call Rosemary for a conversation with her and Campbell where Campbell
suggests using old tricks, like destroying the bust of Mantis' face.
- If you don't call anyone but don't do anything buy try to run around you'll
get some interesting calls as well.
- HIDEO1 is now replaced with HIDEO2 as the blackout channel in this compared
to the events of the Mantis fight in MGS.
- New though is a bootup replacement which makes it look like your game reset,
with "KOJIMA" in place of the "Konami" Banner, and the Fox-logo with Kojima
Productions replaced by "Kojima Protection" and a backwards logo.
Once you defeat Screaming Mantis, you're confronted by Psycho Mantis himself.
While the memory card trick doesn't work, the second part of his abilities
will change depending on your controller.
Having a SIXAXIS connected is far more entertaining that having a Dual Shock 3
but if you have both, it's worth seeing both versions by changing the type you
are using when replaying if you have the option to.
When Mantis dies, if you keep tapping X during this you'll hear some
Japanese being yelled (labeled as the "voice of God" in the credits) and some
flashes of a photo of Hideo Kojima.
After Mantis disappears, you'll also hear The Sorrow. Press X to see hidden
flashbacks of him from MGS3.

Health Boost
Bonus - None
Effect - Additional Health
During the final fight, holding Triangle for a short time during or just after
Ocelot does his various signature poses will get both of you some health back,
Snake more than Ocelot in particular.
In the harder difficulties it's extremely beneficial to use this to complete
this fight.

He's Not Big Boss, But He's Close Enough
Bonus - None
Effect - None
During the third part of the fight with Ocelot, if he grabs Snake into a
choke-hold... do nothing. Eventually instead of a brutal final attack, Ocelot
will kiss Snake on the cheek and let him go.

- As mentioned at the start, everyone who let me use their internet in 1996
an 1997 (sad, I remember looking up the Jurassic Park sequel on computers
at school right now) before getting my own connection in early 98.
- Rammy & Pure Evil for MGS4 Discussions
- EB Games NZ for somehow having a copy of the ultra rare PAL MGS4 LE
(reportedly only 70-100 made it here for the entire country)
- People still visiting REFan after all these years! Sorry I haven't
worked on it in ages. :/
- Everyone who's disappeared offline over the years... I wish you all well
and hope you're doing fine!
- Everyone else who's supported all my projects online the past decade or
so.
