Guide Notation --- | | | ------------------------------------------------------------------- Below is a sample of the format I will be using for the medal heading in this guide: Medal Title ----------- Medal Value: [The number of points the medal is worth] Chapter: [The chapter I recommend playing to obtain the medal] Difficulty: [The difficulty setting I recommend for obtaining this level] Weapon: [My preferred weapon(s) for obtaining this medal] [Requirements of the medal and detailled advice on how to meet these requirements if applicable] Note: Only the relevant notation is used for each medal. ------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | --- 2. Treasure Medals --- | | | ------------------------------------------------------------------- There are a substantial number of medals to gain from simply finding the various treasures hidden in the game. For an in-depth guide to finding all of them, please refer to the excellent guide made by YYZed, which can also be found on GameFAQs. The medals of this section are all automatically gained by following that guide. ...and let's be honest, who isn't going to want to find all of the treasure in a game of this quality? First Treasure -------------- Medal Value: 5 Simply stand over a treasure in the game and press the Triangle button to pick it up. Beginner Fortune Hunter ----------------------- Medal Value: 5 This medal is awarded after you have successfully found five treasures in the game. Novice Fortune Hunter --------------------- Medal Value: 5 This medal is awarded after you have successfully found 10 treasures in the game. Enthusiast Fortune Hunter ------------------------- Medal Value: 10 This medal is awarded after you have successfully found 15 treasures in the game. Intermediate Fortune Hunter --------------------------- Medal Value: 10 This medal is awarded after you have successfully found 20 treasures in the game. Skilled Fortune Hunter ---------------------- Medal Value: 10 This medal is awarded after you have successfully found 25 treasures in the game. Proficient Fortune Hunter ------------------------- Medal Value: 10 This medal is awarded after you have successfully found 30 treasures in the game. Advanced Fortune Hunter ----------------------- Medal Value: 10 This medal is awarded after you have successfully found 35 treasures in the game. Professional Fortune Hunter --------------------------- Medal Value: 10 This medal is awarded after you have successfully found 40 treasures in the game. Senior Fortune Hunter --------------------- Medal Value: 10 This medal is awarded after you have successfully found 45 treasures in the game. Expert Fortune Hunter --------------------- Medal Value: 10 This medal is awarded after you have successfully found 50 treasures in the game. Crack Fortune Hunter -------------------- Medal Value: 10 This medal is awarded after you have successfully found 55 treasures in the game. Master Fortune Hunter --------------------- Medal Value: 50 This medal is only awarded once you have successfully found 60 treasures hidden within the game. You do not need to have found the 'strange relic' in order to satisfy this medal, but this medal can be satisfied by finding the 'strange relic' and 59 other treasures. Although this medal is awarded after the 60th treasure has been found, there are 61 treasures in total. Relic Finder ------------ Medal Value: 20 This medal is awarded for finding a specific treasure in the game, referred to only as the 'strange relic'. Fans of previous Naughty Dog games should instantly recognise what this 'relic' actually is, but I will not spoil the surprise here. Again, a detailed guide to finding it has already been provided by YYZed. ------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | --- 3. Knuckle-Supper Medals --- | | | ------------------------------------------------------------------- The following medals are obtained by Drake choosing his fists over ammunition to lay waste to the pirates. He may not be Brock Lesnar, but Drake's fists are still worth fearing! Brutal Brawler -------------- Medal Value: 10 Chapter: One - Ambushed Difficulty: Easy Weapon: N/A This medal is awarded once Drake has successfully killed five enemies using the 'brutal combo' technique. This can be a difficult move to pull off before you know the trick to it. What has worked best for me is to alter the combo notation. The game seems to punish you for attempting to land the recommended combo: Square, Triangle, Square This often leads to the enemy stopping Drake mid-flow and punching him soundly in the face. My advice is to attempt to land the following combo: Square > Triangle, [pause], Square Run your finger/thumb from the Square button straight onto the Triangle button. Watch Drake and make sure that he begins to move from the first punch into the second. As soon as he does, tap Square again (it doesn't matter if you tap it repeatedly at this point) and Drake will finish off the 'brutal combo' in style. You're home and dry once Drake lands the second hit of the chain, but you do need to press Square again to finish the combo. Simply land five of these combos to earn this medal. If you haven't already been awarded this medal, you will probably obtain it while trying to gain the Brutal Expert medal below. For that reason, it makes sense to try and gain it under the same relaxed conditions. Brutal Slugger -------------- Medal Value: 30 Chapter: Any Difficulty: Easy Weapon: N/A This medal is awarded once Drake has successfully killed 20 enemies with a 'brutal combo'. With the difficulty set to Easy, you do not have to worry so much about Drake taking damage from gunfire. Just run at every enemy you meet (except those carrying a Moss - 12) and perform the combo. It is likely that you will gain this medal before the end of chapter four. Brutal Expert -------------- Medal Value: 40 Chapter: One - Ambushed Difficulty: Easy Weapon: N/A In order to gain this medal, you must successfully kill five enemies in a row with the 'brutal combo'. If you have used this guide to earn the Brutal Slugger medal, you should be comfortable with the technique by now. If not, I recommend that you have a couple of practice runs before attempting this medal properly. The best setting for this medal is the first chapter on the easiest difficulty. Due to the confines of the area, you do not need to run far between each enemy as they board the boat. This also helps you to keep the button-pressing rhythm for the combo. From my experience, you need to kill the five enemies in the same run (meaning that you cannot simply restart from a checkpoint to kill the same enemy five consecutive times). Practice is the key to this medal, but it is thankfully quite easy once you get the hang of delivering a 'brutal combo'. Stealth Attacker ---------------- Medal Value: 30 Chapter: Five - The Fortress Difficulty: Any Weapon: N/A "[W]hen you are just about to have your first gunfight in the Fortress, there's a guy that's really close to you, so it's easy to kill him and respawn." - 666R3DD3VIL, GameFAQs Forum, 26th January 2008. Like many of the Uncharted medals, this one is easy to obtain once you know what to do. Choose Chapter Five from the level select and complete the platforming segments at the opening of the level. When you come to the first area with pirates (after successfully scaling the Fortress walls for a second time), the first pirate you encounter will be walking away from the doorway into the area. Simply walk up to his back and press Square. Drake will proceed to reach around and snap his neck. Now walk out into the open and allow yourself to get killed by the men on the upper level. You will respawn at a checkpoint prior to that area, giving you another opportunity to 'stealth kill' the first pirate. Repeat the process 20 times to earn this medal. It is a tedious task, but an easy one. Steel Fist ---------- Medal Value: 10 Chapter: One - Ambushed Difficulty: Easy Weapon: PM - 9mm This medal is awarded for successfully killing five enemies with a single punch, landed after you have 'softened them up' with gunfire. What this means is that Drake must kill the enemy with a single melee attack (Square press) after non-fatally shooting them. Focus on gaining the Steel Fist Expert medal (immediately below) and you will be awarded this medal at the same time. Steel Fist Expert ----------------- Medal Value: 40 Chapter: One - Ambushed Difficulty: Easy Weapon: PM - 9mm This medal is awarded for successfully killing five CONSECUTIVE enemies with a single melee attack after non-fatally shooting them. My advice for this medal is to return to the trusty boat of chapter one. Having searched the GameFAQs forum, many people seem to have thought the same way as I did: Set the difficulty to Easy to allow Drake to simply run straight at the pirates as they board the boat. With the intended pirate directly in front of Drake, press R1 to shoot without aiming. When performed correctly, Drake shoots the pirate in the lower torso. As you reach the enemy, press Square to see Drake deliver a one-punch kill. Line Drake up with the next pirate and repeat. Once you have killed five pirates in a row you will be awarded this medal. If you have not yet been awarded the Steel Fist medal, you will earn it either before or at the same time as this one. Note: The best weapon to use for obtaining this medal is the default handgun. It can be tempting to give Drake a hand-cannon, but this will instantly kill the pirates and therefore defeats the point of the medal. The PM - 9mm is all that Drake needs for this challenge. ------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | --- 4. Marksmanship Medals --- | | | ------------------------------------------------------------------- Any man holding a gun can point and shoot, but Drake will need strong aiming ability to earn the medals in this section. Headshot Expert --------------- Medal Value: 20 Chapter: One - Ambushed Difficulty: Easy Weapon: PM - 9mm This medal is awarded after successfully killing five enemies in a row with headshots. Purely for ease of enemy location, choose the first level and set the difficulty to Easy. The first four pirates to approach the boat remain in their two smaller boats. While the obvious tactic here normally is to shoot the barrels and kill them both at the same time, Drake can take his time and kill them all with four well-placed headshots if he shoots from cover. This leaves one more headshot for the medal. Take your time with the first pirate to board the boat and do not worry about taking fire whilst aiming (as Drake can take a lot of damage on the Easy difficulty setting). Pick him off with the fifth headshot and the medal is yours. Tip: Drake seems to recoil slightly when firing, causing the bullet to hit slightly above the crosshair position. If you are planning to kill a distant enemy with a headshot, try aiming for their neck. If you would rather use a Dragon Sniper (for greater aiming accuracy), then Chapter 11 provides the perfect opportunity. This option is described immediately below. 10 Headshots ------------ Medal Value: 5 Chapter: 11 - Trapped Difficulty: Easy Weapon: Dragon Sniper While the rest of the Headshot medals can be obtained anywhere (and will likely be obtained automatically as you play the game), Chapter 11 is a good place for headshots. Right at the start of the chapter, run down the stairs and jump over the righthand rail to place Drake in the corner of this room. Leaning against the side of the stairs is a Dragon Sniper with five bullets. With the difficulty setting on Easy, you can take your time and deliver pinpoint headshots to five of the enemies in this room. Pick your favourite targets. Mine included the man behind the crates immediately in front of the stairs and a couple that come in from the left, along with the shotgun-wielding pirate (who was the lucky recipient of my first bullet as he tried to storm the corner). You can restart from the last checkpoint in order to repeat these kills as often as required. 30 Headshots ------------ Medal Value: 10 Chapter: Any Difficulty: Any Weapon: Dragon Sniper Again, this medal can be earned in any chapter and you will probably be awarded it without any deliberate effort. The chapter 11 tactic (above) is provided solely for those having difficulty with headshots. 100 Headshots ------------- Medal Value: 30 Chapter: Any Difficulty: Any Weapon: Dragon Sniper Simply kill 100 enemies with a headshot to earn this medal. If you don't earn it on your first play-through, you will will almost certainly have earned it before completing your second. Without knowing of its existence, I was awarded this medal in Chapter 15 on my first play-through. Dyno-Might! ----------- Medal Value: 10 Chapter: Seven - Out of the Frying Pan Difficulty: Any Weapon: Mounted Grenade Launcher (L1) "When you start the jeep sequence where you're on the machine gun, the first set of enemies run out from the right near an exploding barrel. You have to time it just right to get all three just keep restarting the checkpoint." - gameguru2, GameFAQs Forum, 26th January 2008 There is a chance that you will already have this medal before you reach chapter seven, as there is a superb opportunity towards the end of chapter four. However, this technique prevails in this guide as the location is a lot easier to reach for those going back for their final few medals. In practice, it is best to fire a grenade towards the bottom-left corner of the crates in front of the barrel and to wait until you can see the third man. Timing this shot is the key to earning the medal. If Drake fires too early, the third man runs in and takes cover. If he fires too late, the first man to come out from the right has already gone too far to the left to get killed. Practice is the key to this medal. Expert Dyno-Might ----------------- Medal Value: 30 Chapter: Seven - Out of the Frying Pan Difficulty: Any Weapon: Mounted Grenade Launcher (L1) This medal is awarded for completing the Dyno-Might! requirements five times. Earning the Dyno-Might! medal itself counts as the first of the five multi-kills required. All you need to do is follow the advice given for the Dyno-Might! medal and restart from the last checkpoint immediately after you pass through the arch directly after the barrel (this gives you enough time to see whether or not that attempt was a successful one). Following gameguru2's advice myself, I earned this medal in roughly five minutes. It is not terribly difficult once you know where to shoot. Again, though, timing the shot is the key to this medal. ------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | --- 5. Stylised Killing Medals --- | | | ------------------------------------------------------------------- The following medals are earned by Drake taking a nonchalant attitude towards (his own) life and (the) death (of others). Run-and-Gunner -------------- Medal Value: 10 Chapter: One - Ambushed Difficulty: Easy Weapon: Wes - 44 / Moss - 12 / SAS - 12 This medal appears to have been put into the game solely to have the player attempt an alternative tactic to the shoot-out sections. Instead of the standard approach of hiding behind cover and peering out to shoot, this medal can only be earned by killing 20 enemies without aiming. To this end, I recommend setting the difficulty to Easy so that you can run at the enemy without the fear of being killed in one hit. With the enemy directly ahead of Drake, simply press R1 to have Drake shoot from the hip. For those of you who have already unlocked the Weapon Select, begin chapter one and equip Drake with the Wes - 44. This only needs to be fired once from the hip to kill the enemy. You get 12 shots with this gun, which is more than enough for the number of enemies that board the boat. Replay this chapter once (twice at most) for an easy way to earn this medal. For those who haven't yet unlocked the Weapon Select bonus, the obvious advantage of the shotguns for this medal is that one shot at close range will kill the enemy. It is best to stick to the powerful weapons when using this tactic in standard gameplay. Hangman ------- Medal Value: 10 Chapter: 13 - Sanctuary? Difficulty: Easy Weapon: Wes - 44 Right at the start of this chapter, dive back into the water and head to the left of the waterwheel and climb up onto the edge of the ruins. If you are following (or have already followed) the Treasure Location FAQ by YYZed, you should be standing on the location of the Golden Turtle (treasure #35 in the guide). Face the bridge and jump up to hang from it. From this position, hold L1 to aim over the top of the bridge at the three pirates above (to the right). You may not be able to see all three at first, but once you kill the first one, the others will come running over. I recommend the Easy difficulty setting so that you don't need to worry about getting shot whilst aiming. I also recommend the Wes - 44 as the weapon of choice, because landing one shot will kill the enemy. Kill these three and then restart from the last checkpoint to repeat the process. Once the 10th enemy has been killed, the medal is yours. Note: Drake cannot fire his secondary weapon from the hanging position (this is common sense, really, as he would require both hands to aim it). The Wes - 44 is the best gun for this challenge, with the 92FS - 9mm being my second choice due to the large number of bullets it can hold. Grenade Hangman --------------- Medal Value: 10 Chapter: 13 - Sanctuary? Difficulty: Easy Weapon: Mk-NDI (compulsory) This medal is awarded once you have successfully killed 10 men with grenades thrown from the hanging position. The best strategy I have found comes from using the same tactic as for the Hangman medal (immediately above), but using the Mk-NDI grenades instead. Restart from the checkpoint and repeat as many times as required. It should take no longer than five minutes with this method. ------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | --- 6. Kill Quota Medals --- | | | ------------------------------------------------------------------- These medals require Drake to kill a certain number of enemies without dying or simply with a specific weapon. Fully unlocking Weapon Select makes most of these very easy to obtain, but nearly all of them will be earned without effort by the end of your second play-through. Survivor -------- Medal Value: 50 Chapter: 19 - Unwelcome Guests Difficulty: Easy Weapon: MP40 "After you turn on the generator in the Nazi bunker, the enemies will be endless. So will the littering ammo be. Just run and gun until you get Survivor. Heh, I got it my first go, I didnt realize I was supposed to run away." - Nelo_Portgas, GameFAQs Forum, 21st January 2008 This medal has the potential to be an annoying one. It is only awarded once Drake has successfully killed 50 enemies in a row without being killed himself. The problems here are not so much with the shoot-outs, but more with the platforming sections. If you die from missing a jump or failing to grab a ledge, the kill count resets to zero. Although playing the game through on the Easy difficulty setting will lead to most players earning this medal without specific effort, the strategy recommended above by Nelo_Portgas is a good one for those of you having difficulty with this medal. The standard weapon available to Drake at this point is the MP40, which is fine for the purposes of this tactic. The only advice I need to add here is that allowing Drake to get cornered is a mistake. Keep him moving around the pillars in the centre of this area and make sure that you remember where the spare ammunition is. Try to pick off single enemies, as running towards more than one will more than likely lead to a potentially-fatal counter-attack by the enemy Drake isn't shooting. This strategy is by no means perfect, but it does remove the platforming aspect which ruined several of my earliest attempts. 50 Kills: PM - 9mm ------------------ Medal Value: 10 Chapter: Any Difficulty: Any Weapon: PM - 9mm This medal is awarded after you have succesfully killed 50 enemies with the PM-9mm. 50 Kills: 92FS - 9mm -------------------- Medal Value: 10 Chapter: Any Difficulty: Any Weapon: 92FS - 9mm This medal is awarded after you have succesfully killed 50 enemies with the 92FS - 9mm. 50 Kills: Micro - 9mm --------------------- Medal Value: 10 Chapter: Any Difficulty: Any Weapon: Micro - 9mm This medal is awarded after you have succesfully killed 50 enemies with the Micro - 9mm. 20 Kills: Wes - 44 ------------------ Medal Value: 10 Chapter: Any Difficulty: Any Weapon: Wes - 44 This medal is awarded after you have succesfully killed 20 enemies with the Wes - 44. 20 Kills: Desert - 5 -------------------- Medal Value: 10 Chapter: Any Difficulty: Any Weapon: Desert - 5 This medal is awarded after you have succesfully killed 20 enemies with the Desert - 5. 30 Kills: MP40 -------------- Medal Value: 10 Chapter: Any Difficulty: Any Weapon: MP40 This medal is awarded after you have succesfully killed 30 enemies with the MP40. 50 Kills: AK-47 --------------- Medal Value: 10 Chapter: Any Difficulty: Any Weapon: AK-47 This medal is awarded after you have succesfully killed 50 enemies with the AK-47. 50 Kills: M4 ------------ Medal Value: 10 Chapter: Any Difficulty: Any Weapon: M4 This medal is awarded after you have succesfully killed 50 enemies with the M4. 30 Kills: Dragon Sniper ----------------------- Medal Value: 10 Chapter: Any Difficulty: Any Weapon: Dragon Sniper This medal is awarded after you have succesfully killed 30 enemies with the Dragon Sniper. 50 Kills: Moss - 12 ------------------- Medal Value: 10 Chapter: Any Difficulty: Any Weapon: Moss - 12 This medal is awarded after you have succesfully killed 50 enemies with the Moss - 12. 50 Kills: SAS - 12 ------------------ Medal Value: 10 Chapter: Any Difficulty: Any Weapon: SAS - 12 This medal is awarded after you have succesfully killed 50 enemies with the SAS - 12. 30 Kills: M79 ------------- Medal Value: 10 Chapter: Any Difficulty: Any Weapon: M79 This medal is awarded after you have succesfully killed 30 enemies with the M79 (grenade launcher). 20 Kills: Mk-NDI ---------------- Medal Value: 10 Chapter: Any Difficulty: Any Weapon: Mk-NDI This medal is awarded after you have succesfully killed 20 enemies with the Mk-NDI (grenades). ------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | --- 7. Game Completion Medals --- | | | ------------------------------------------------------------------- No medal list would be complete without these. In order to obtain all of the available 1,000 points, the game must be completed from beginning to end (without interruption, although not necessarily in one sitting) in every difficulty setting. The Charted! - Easy medal will be awarded automatically if you complete the game on Normal, though. Charted! - Easy --------------- Medal Value: 30 Complete the entire game (beginning from chapter one) with the difficulty set to Easy. Note: Changing the difficulty setting (or selecting a chapter using the Chapter Select option) at any point during your play-through will prevent you from obtaining this medal when you finish the final chapter. Charted! - Normal ----------------- Medal Value: 70 Complete the entire game (beginning from chapter one) with the difficulty set to Normal. Note: If you have not already been awarded the Charted! - Easy medal when you successfully earn the Charted! - Normal medal, it will be automatically awarded at the same time. For this reason, only players new to the genre should consider playing through the whole game on Easy. Even then I wouldn't think it was necessary to do so. Charted! - Hard --------------- Medal Value: 100 Complete the entire game (beginning from chapter one) with the difficulty set to Hard. Charted! - Crushing ------------------- Medal Value: 150 Complete the entire game (beginning from chapter one) with the difficulty set to Crushing. Note: This difficulty setting can only be accessed after earning the Charted! - Hard medal. To begin your Crushing play-through, you must select New Game from the main menu. Be sure to carry over your medals and treasures to the new file! ------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | --- 8. About The Author / Guide --- | | | ------------------------------------------------------------------- I am a 22 year-old male, born and raised in England. I am currently studying in the final year of my LLB Law Degree. Of the current-generation consoles, I only own a PlayStation 3 and have no desire to buy anything else. My favourite types of game are platformers and fighting games, which are both well catered for on the PlayStation 3. I decided to make this guide after the surprising discovery that no-one else had felt that it could be useful. As this is rapidly becoming one of my favourite PS3 games, I feel proud to be able to contribute and potentially help fellow gamers who also appreciate it enough to want to finish it fully. Guide Contributions and Thanks --- | | | ------------------------------------------------------------------- Although most of this guide should be treated as my original work, the GameFAQs Forum has helped to shed light on alternative solutions to earning some of the trickier medals. The following forum contributors, already credited above in the main body of this guide, are highlighted again here for their willingness to help others having difficulty. -666R3DD3VIL -gameguru2 -Nelo_Portgas My thanks go to these three, as well as the people behind the ASCII Generator webpage. It has been shown to be an invaluable resource for those of us who decide to make a guide in Notepad. Finally, I would like to thank everyone who reads this guide for taking the time to do so.
