Let me say this first so i can reitterate it later. NO mashing! Leia must be played deliberately in order to work. Only one input should be required for each attack/arte. If you are here for better combo ability then you must learn the individual input timing for each attack and arte. Like anything else she will take practice and time to master. I will be covering Leia, her full battle potential and everything it entails. I will be making more version's covering more in depth subjects and filling in the cracks as this progresses. I decided to make this guide because i ended up loving Leia as a character and her playstyle in general. I also feel comfortable doing so, as I'm used to in depth fighting game mechanic's and figuring it out in Xillia really doesn't feel too different than what I'm used to, there just isnt a practice mode.:/ Just kidding. Considering that she is in truth the 4th most capable melee character out of 6,she tends to get a bit overlooked. Leia Rolando Profile ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Leia Rolando is a nurse from the town of Leronde. She has a cheery disposition and is a little bit of a tomboy. Leia and Jude were trained in Martial Artes by her mother Sonia. Leia helped Jude to get better at fighting by constantly sparring with and beating him up. Leia is a competent staff wielder and is as useful in the air as she is on the ground. She has a double jump and most of her moves are air capable. She uses precision strikes, witty maneuvering, and air juggling to gain the advantage and keep the pressure on in battle. Her innate ability is Elongating Staff which temporarily increases the Range and damage of your attacks by imbuing your staff with light energy. You can activate Elongating Staff by back-stepping to dodge an attack. Elongating staff will only take effect from the enemy you are targeting and only if you time the dodging of the enemies attack perfectly. She is also capable of healing and buffing single allies and can function as a tank for the party as well. She has the best Vitality stat and the second best Agility stat behind the incredibly speedy Jude. She has Item Skills that provide extra benefits when she uses them. When she is used as a link partner, she can steal items when you are attacking an enemy in the Knockdown condition. All of this adds up to Leia being a terrific support character who can function well in any situation with versatility and is considered to be almost necessary for boss battles. Leia is light on tp but fortunately her artes are not tp heavy. While her movement list might seem small, all but two of her Physical artes are aerial enabled, they also tend to have multiple uses and are her maneuvering tools. Battle Style: Battle Staff/Aerial Fighter/Paladin Mage Style: White/Support Link Partner: Thief Unlinked: Alchemist ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.Basic Attacks ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here I will break down her basic X attacks for you. These are generally very quick and precise strikes. I will cover this more later, but try to alternate using these and her Physical artes in combos, as they have properties that help to extend her combo ability and overall efficiency, like D2 to Swallow Flight or F1 to Crescent Flash. Key: N-Neutral U-Up D-Down F-Forward A-Air P-Power 1-1st attack in the chain 2-2nd attack in the chain 3-3rd attack in the chain 4-4th attack in the chain N1 - Neutral + X/ A quick strike downward N2 - Neutral + X/ A quicker strike downward U1 - L3 Up + X/ Knock the enemy into the air while remaining standing, OTG into the air effect U2 - L3 Up + X/ Jump up and strike upward hitting an aired enemy or knocking a standing enemy into the air, it's possible to combo many A1/A2 attacks after U2 D1 - L3 Down + X/ Sweep from right to left, OTG force stand up effect. D2 - L2 Down + X/ Thrust at a diagonal towards the floor, Knockdown F1 - L3 Left/Right + X/ A spinning strike that hits from left to right, force enemy to face a different direction. F2 - L3 Left/Right + X/ Advance on the enemy with a spinning lunge technique while striking behind your back F3 - L3 Left/Right + X/ An extremely quick strike F4 - L3 Left/Right + X/ A concentrated thrust that has a knockback effect A1 - Neutral in air + X/ An air downward attack striking the enemy with the left side of the staff A2 - Neutral in air + X/ Similar to A1 but strikes on the opposite side. P1 - L1 + X/ A focused thrust attack, similar to F4. Use it to stun and knockback the enemy without going through the Forward chain. P1U - Up + L1 + X/ Sweep from left to right hitting enemies all around you then follow with an upwards strike knocking your target into the air while remaining standing. Has a chance to stun. P2 - L1 + X/ Replaces P1 when equipped with the Mirage Assault skill. Attempt to evade and attack by spinning your body to the right or left around the enemy and striking upward. Very quick. This can even strike at enemies behind your back. Hold the Left Stick Up to move and attack away from the from the screen. TP: 9 Hits: 1 Properties: Aerial Element: Wind Status: Paralysis Usage: Aerial attack available after 100 uses Aerial Difference: None Stat Variable: Agility Hit Multiplier: 2.00 X 1 Damage Total: 200% Personal notes: Dash towards the enemy with an outstretched staff for a quick single strike. Gain distance, pressure enemies, and push them backwards. Useful to catch enemies before they cast a spell or as a forward air dash without attacking in mind. She can effectively Air glide across the entire length of the arena which can be ideal. When the enemy is in knockdown status, you can use this move to dash over them and pick up your attacks on the opposite side, their back. This is ideal for knocking enemies into AoE spells or attacks rather than one that would put them in knockdown status, as enemies in knockdown only receive about 1/4th of the damage they normally would. Spiral Strike: A martial arte in which the user spins her staff while leaping upward, pulling surrounding foes with her. TP: 10 Hits: 3 Properties: Aerial, Airborne Element: None Status: None Usage: None Aerial Difference: Quicker Execution Stat Variable: None Hit Multiplier: 0.72 x 3 Damage Total: 218% Personal notes: Jump upward while attacking with three spinning strikes that can hit enemies all around Leia if they are close enough. You remain airborne after use on the ground(Airborne) and can combo Spiral Strike for as much AC as you have. When the enemy is caught in this attack he is kept in the same spacial area in proportion to your body that he is caught in, so you could catch the enemy from directly under his feet, then continue to juggle him right over your head. This is your best tool for gaining as much upward height as possible and can be used as an extra air jump, keep in mind when using Soaring Blast, which has a wider AoE when used from greater heights. Cerberus Strike: A quick martial arte that uses clever staff play to strike three times in rapid succession. TP: 9 Hits: 1 Properties: Aerial, Airborne Element: Earth Status: Slow Usage: Attack speed increases after 200 uses Aerial Difference: Knockdown Stat Variable: Agility Hit Multiplier: 1.00 x 3 Damage Total: 300% Personal notes: This is a great choice for a launcher, it pops them up higher than Swallow Flight or Spiral Strike and has a swift execution time so it wont be as likely to get hit out of. When used in the air it has a Knockdown effect, which can be picked after landing in a combo if you are low enough to the ground with Swallow Flight, U1 or D1. If you are surrounded by a large group of enemies, use Crescent Flash or Darting Claw to get space then combo Cerberus Strike to get out of the other enemies attack range and air combo your target uninterrupted. It might interest you to know that it's possible to combo both hits of Soaring Blast From Cerberus Strike ground. Swallow Flight: A Jumping strike upward, pulling foes along to be struck again in midair TP: 12 Hits: 2 Properties: Aerial, Airborne Element: Fire Status: Burn Usage: Burn inflicts easier at 200 uses, OTG effect at 400 uses. Aerial Difference: None Stat Variable: None Hit Multiplier: 1.40 x 2 Damage Total: 280% Personal notes: Swing your staff in an upward direction twice in a fluid motion. This is the only arte besides normal attacks with an OTG effect so it really helps to be comfortable using this one. Like Spiral Strike, it can be used as a third jump or combo floater. But unlike Spiral Strike, the enemy loses altitude in the floating process, so it can be used to position them for Staff Rain or Crescent Flash for example. As an extra jump this will cover more distance and float longer as opposed to Spiral Strike's quick mostly upward mobility. Rabid Lunge: Focus one's strength into a thrust to send foes flying. It's followed by a back step. TP: 11 Hits: 1 Properties: Aerial, Knockdown, Guardbreak Element: Earth Status:Slow Usage: Guardbreak effect at 100 uses, Leia be staggered while using this arte after 100 uses, attack speed is increased at 200 uses Aerial Difference: Spin in place rather than backward after striking. Stat Variable: None Hit Multiplier: 3.20 x 1 Damage Total: 320% Personal notes: This is one of my favorite moves, it is highly useful for offense and defense purposes. Make sure to include it in your reportoire if your setup does not include all Physical Artes. You can get some breathing room, so that you can cast a heal or a buff as needed. This has a pretty good amount of knockback coupled with the Knockdown so it is a great move for manipulating the enemies location. It knocks the enemy directly forward so aiming it is pretty easy when using free run. Use it to start combos if the enemy is guarding, the back step motion can be cancelled if you link an attack during the thrust animation It is also a great combo ender whether you are on the ground or in the air helps ensure you won't be countered. Crescent Flash: Grab the staff at the end to sweep attack in a wide radius. Most useful when surrounded TP: 14 Hits: 1 Properties: Aerial Element: Water Status: Weak Usage: Radius is increased after 200 uses Aerial Difference: Quicker execution Stat Variable: Nonce Hit Multiplier: 3.50 x 1 Damage Total: 350% Personal notes: Sweep in a complete circle around your body with the staff outstretched. There's no more effective move when surrounded and is arguable the most benefitted from Elongating Staff. This attack has a Slow startup when used on the ground which can be annoying for an attack that is meant for being surrounded but it can combo from a quicker startup normal attack, F1 is an appropriate choice but i prefer linking it after F3 as the forward chain sets up other things besides the F4 thrust well too. When used in the air, the startup is much quicker and this attack will hit the enemy as low as Leia's feet lined up with their head. After bringing multiple enemies in the air, with Spiral Strike for example, This is a great follow up. Staff Rain: A martial arte that harries foes with countless rapid strikes. TP: 16 Hits: 5-11 Properties: Aerial Version Element: None Status: None Usage: Extra hits gained at uses of 100,200,400,1000,2000,4000 Aerial Difference: Attacks at a diagonal towards the ground. Aerial Usage: Extra hits gained at uses of 100,200,400 Stat Variable: Dexterity Hit Multiplier: 0.80 x 5 + 0.40 x 1-6 Aerial Hit Multiplier: 1.33 x 3 + 0.40 x 1-3 Damage Total: 400% - 640% Aerial Damage Total: 400% - 520% Personal notes: Note that you increase the number of hits from Staff Rain by holding down the O Artes button. If you happen to use this as a Right stick shortcut, you can ONLY get the extra hits by hitting and holding the artes button at the same time as you move the Right stick. I personally use it as L1/neutral O button for this reason. You can still link an attack after increading the hits. This is your go to arte for piling on the damage, especially as you increase the number of hits. Soaring Vortex: Steady meditative breathing is needed when juggling a foe upward with a whirlwind-like attack. TP: 12 Hits: 1 Properties: Knockdown Element: Wind Status: Paralysis Usage: AoE is increased after 200 uses Aerial Difference: N/A Stat Variable: Vitality Hit Multiplier: 3.80 x 1 Damage Total: 380% Personal notes: Summon a whirlwind that leaves you facing the enemies back in Knockdown. It's a pretty strong attack and and flashy Launcher at that. U1 and Swallow Flight are great pick up choices as always, though the enemy can be hit before they reach the ground. The attack itself will not activate if there is not a standing enemy in range, and if there are multiple enemies in range it will activate on the closest one, not the one you are facing so if used cleverly you could use this after knocking down or away an you target then allow it to attack on an enemy attempting to flank, you'll then be facing that new enemy so it is also good for quickly and efficiently switching targets while continuing an assault. Remember that simply tapping R1 will have you target the enemy you are closest to, which is also how this attack works. Use this to escape being trapped against a wall where it would put you at a more advantageous position than Rabid Lunge for example. Neither normal attacks nor artes can combo into Soaring Vortex. Soaring Blast: Shock waves emitted by leaping up and striking the earth. The range expands if executed in midair. TP: 18 Hits: 2 Properties: Aerial, Knockdown, Airborne Element: None Status: None Usage: Knocks enemies higher into the air after 200 uses Aerial Difference: Higher AoE the higher Leia is in the air. Stat Variable: Vitality Hit Multiplier: 0.30 x 1 + 3.00 x 1 Damage Total: 330% Personal notes: Definitely a fun arte to use, it can be useful in many different situations. The strike downwards is the weak hit, and the explosion is the one for 300% The timing to link and attack can be tricky but you'll get it soon enough. Rabid Lunge and Crescent Flash are decent, but i really prefer Swallow Flight, As it gives this arte a combo starter potential. Use it when you are Surrounded as well cant hope to pull a strike off on the ground, Jump up twice then use Spiral Strike for more air and time your aiming then use it to Knockdown every enemy below you. The enemies are blasted outward from the direction of the explosion, so if you are attempting to combo then make sure the enemy is in between you and your staff or directly below your staff, they will be sent flying away from you otherwise. Arcane Arte - Soulstoke Spin: An arcane arte in which the user attacks by spinnig a staff enveloped in light energy. TP: 30 Hits: 6 Properties: Temporary Elongating Staff effect while attacking with this arte. Hit Multiplier: 1.40 x 6 Damage Total: 840% Personal notes: The attack begins with Leia raising her weapon and striking directly in front and behind her while elongating her staff. She then swings the weapon in every direction capable of hitting multiple foes all around her while advancing forward slightly. This is a great arte for piling on major damage, especially with buffs cast on you. Activate her Mystic Arte while using this attack in Overlimit by holding down the X/basic attack button. Mystic Arte - Soulstoke Celebration: Hits: 5 Hit Multiplier: 2.00 x 4 + 25.00 x 1 Damage Total 3300% Personal notes: Leia spins her staff to create a whirlwind to strike the opponent 4 times and knock them down. She then tosses her staff high into the air, leaps after, Then brings it down in a dragoon like manner for a powerful finishing jump attack. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4.Spirit Artes ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Key: Fa-First Aid He-Heal Re-Resurrection Cu-Cure Sh-Sharpness Ba-Barrier Qu-Quickness Ei-Elemental Impulse Healing Artes - First Aid: Bathe an ally in light to heal 30% of his or her HP. TP: 8 Cast Time: 2.00 Notes: None Heal: Bathe an ally in light to heal 50% of his or her HP. TP: 14 Cast Time: 3.00 Notes: None Resurrection: Summon an angel to revive a KO'd ally, and also restore a small amount of his or her HP. TP: 26 Cast Time: 3.00 Notes: Use this even if you ally is alive but you think they will fall before you can pull the cast off. Cure: Bathe an ally in light to heal 70% of his or her HP. TP: 21 Cast Time: 4.00 Notes: None Support Artes - Sharpness: Temporarily boost the physical attack and magical attack of a chosen ally. TP: 8 Cast Time: 1.33 Notes: Physical and Magic Power is increased by 40% for 10 seconds. Barrier: Temporarily boost the physical attack and magical defense of a chosen ally. TP: 8 Cast Time: 1.33 Notes: Physical and Magic Defense is increased by 50% for 10 seconds. Quickness: Temporarily boost the movement speed of a chosen ally. TP: 8 Cast Time: 1.33 Notes: Movement speed is increased by 20% for 10 seconds. Elemental Impulse: Give an elemental property to the attacks of a chosen ally. Which element?. It's the luck of the draw! TP: 8 Cast Time: 1.33 Notes: Give a party member an elementally charged weapon, based on the weakness of the targeted enemy. This will effectively double your damage output. If there is no weakness, the element will be random. When you use this on the ground, your Crescent Flash takes more time to startup which isnt great for being surrounded, and you will knock enemies away from the spinning thunder AoE which isnt good. We all know the frustration of missing the timing for your mystic arte because you accidentally did a Physical arte you can't canel out of. R3 in Neutral: Attacks that lift the opponent into the air R3 = Up: Spiral Strike Why: The attack functions by raising the character almost directly up R3 = Left: Cerberus Strike Why: It fits into the category, place both earth attacks onto R3 = Left R3 = Right: Soaring Vortex Why: It fits into the category, Place both wind attacks onto R3 = Right R3 = Down: Swallow Flight Why It has an on the Ground effect R3 in L1: Attacks that knock away/Knockdown. Single swipes/strikes. L1 + R3 = Up: Soaring Blast Why: Can be used for greater AoE higher in the air. Even on the ground she jumps before attacking. L1 + R3 = Left: Rabid Lunge Why: Both earth attacks are on the R3 = Left. Makes it easier to remember. L1 + R3 = Right: Darting Claw Why: Both wind attacks are on the R3 = Right. Makes it easier to remember. L1 + R3 = Down: Crescent Flash Why: Sweeps low to the ground and can hit enemies below you when used in air. Artes in L1: Support buffs and Staff Rain L1 + O: Staff Rain Why: Because you are going to want to extend your hits. Setting this to a R Click makes it harder to do so as you will have to hold the artes button at the same time as you move the R stick anyway. Can more easily spell cancel after wards like this anyway. L1 + Up + O: Sharpness Why: Used in conjunction with Barrier being the down motion. Up for attack, Down for defense L1 + Left/Right + O: Elemental Impulse Why: It is easy to remember when using Sharpness and Barrier in my setup that your other buff must be left or right. Quickness works just fine here as well. L1 + Down + O: Barrier Why: Hunker Down in defense mode. The other whys tell it. This is my exact setup except for Darting Claw and Rabid Lunge are Switched. This makes both of the R3 + Right attacks have a knockdown effect. 2. Spell Cancelling Spell Cancelling is a technique involving quickly casting a spell after a Physical attack or Arte and immediately cancelling the spell to actually extend your combo. Because this guide is attempting to make the most out of Leia and realize her full potential, I will teach this technique since it applies to her. You see Spell Cancelling can be done very quickly and you can still combo after doing so. When you Spell Cancel, you reset your AC counter, so you could use this technique to pull infinite combos if you so desire. A spell cancel means to press the guard button during a spell in order to cancel the casting of it. For this technique, you will need to cast a spell, then guard, then attack all VERY quickly albeit in a controlled manner. To learn Spell Cancelling, set a spell(we'll go with First Aid) to your neutral artes button and practice this basic input N1, N2, Fa, Guard, N1, N2, N1, N2 etc... You will know a successful Spell Cancel by seeing the spell ring barely materialize, your AC counter resetting after the guard cancel, and having a combo two hits above the AC counter Then you can practice something like this D1, D2, Fa, Guard, D1, D2 etc... Just to see how it works with a different attack. Once you can pull of a Spell Cancel quickly and with confidence, move up to Spell Cancelling an arte. We will start with Soaring Vortex. This one is not too difficult at all. Just Spell Cancel after you send the enemy up into the air and are on the other side. SV, Fa, Guard, SF Now try Rabid Lunge. This will involve Spell Cancelling the backstep, then running forward to pick up the enemy with U1 RL, Fa, Guard, U1 Now that you've got the hang of it, try Spell Cancelling after a Staff Rain and increasing the hits. SR (hold artes button), Fa, Guard, DC The last example i will show you is a Spell Cancel to decrease the recovery time after landing from in the air. This will not combo unless you utilize the Spell Cancel. You use SF twice then SS then SB. Pick up the enemy with D1, U1 or SF after you land and Spell Cancel. You may have to run up to pick up the enemy, unless you are practicing against a wall. SF, SF, SS, SB, Land, Fa, Guard, D1 These all DO combo so if it takes you awhile to get the Spell Cancel technique just keep practicing. Honestly though you will probably find that landing your first spell cancel is the hardest. After you understand the concept, figuring it out in other ways isnt so bad. 3. Link Arte Filling First off, You're probably asking yourself "What is Link Arte Filling???" Link Arte Filling is a technique involving fulfilling the conditions to activate a Link Arte and Filling an extra Physical Arte in before the Link Arte Activation input time ends. Now, Link Arte Filling must be done very quickly as the input time for activating a Link Arte is not extremely long. That being said, the best moves to consider are those that are quick to execute. Leia has some moves that fit this criteria well, other moves will work but you will not be able to perform the entire animation as a filler before you have to actiavte the link arte or lose the input timing. Link Arte Filling is useful in many different situation, not to mention pretty flashy. I personally use Link Arte Filling to add to and ensure better combo potential. I will show examples with every character but Elize to help illustrate how this technique works and I'll start with Jude First. This Filler technique will involve knocking a lone enemy back towards a group with Staff Rain. You then fill the input timing for Tempest Pirouette with a Darting Claw to knock him further back toward the group, then quickly activate the link arte with the input timing from Staff Rain to snap the enemy and group together behind him. This filler serves to adjust your placement of the Whirlwind Snap further towards the group behind the lone enemy to bring them together better for the Tempest Piroutte. SR, DC, TePi Next up is Milla This one involves using a Darting Claw to get close to the opponent, filling the input timing with a Rabid Lunge to knock him away and down, Then activating Gale Blitz to zoom right back towards him and pick him up with its OTG effect. Dc, RL, GaBl For the next example we'll us Rowen For this filler, you will knock the enemy into the air with a Cerberus Strike then combo a Soaring Blast. You then will use the first hit of Swallow Flight for you Link Arte Filler for it's OTG effect and to keep them juggled in the air. This way, when you activate your Brutal Torrent, you will
actually trap them in the water bubble thats created before you smash it.

My last example will be with Alvin.
You start off with Cerberus Strike, then combo a Spiral Strike then Crescent
Flash. For the filler you will knock the enemy further into the air with
another Spiral Strike and to keep them at a close vertical distance, then
activate your Spinning Thunder from the Crescent Flash input time and the
enemy will fall right into the tornado effect.
