INTRODUCTION ================================================================= Hello, and welcome to my GuitarFreaks & DrumMania Masterpiece Gold FAQ! This is my third GF/DM FAQ, my other two being GF/DM V and GF/DM Masterpiece Silver (yeah, I've been really procrastinating on writing a GF/DM V2 FAQ >.>). I was originally inspired to write GF/DM home version FAQs after wishing for some kind of universal difficulty ranking so I could find all songs of a given difficulty range without having to go through every single sort option in the game to try to find them all (in GuitarFreaks, there are 9 possible notecharts so going through all 9 sort modes to find songs in a certain difficulty range got really tedious). Though this guide is very similar to my others in many respects, if you've already read the tips and general information in those guides, most of that information still holds true for this one. The main differences you'll find here are the MPG-specific extra bits such as new song and unlock information. So, whatever you use it for, thanks for checking out my FAQ and feel free to send me any (polite) corrections, comments, questions, or suggestions you may have. I may or may not be able to reply to every message, but I will read them all. ================================================================= ================================================================= 3. WHAT'S NEW IN MASTERPIECE GOLD? ================================================================= A number of small changes have been made in Masterpiece Gold that aren't present in other home releases thus far, so it seems like it would be beneficial to provide a quick list of the changes. In no particular order: * There are no longer "GuitarFreaks" or "DrumMania" options on the main menu -- only "Arcade" and "Free." Once you select one of those two modes, you're taken to an arcade-style "press the button to join the game" type of player selection menu. The game will indicate which players have which controllers plugged in, and if a player wishes to play all he/she needs to do is press Start on his controller one time. Once all players that wish to play have done so (their icons will light up and the character will come to life) any player can confirm the selection and begin the game by pressing Start one more time. * In Free Mode, there is no "Continue/Music Select/Play Style Menu" screen that appears between songs -- you're taken immediately back to the song select screen. If auto-save is turned on, the game will automatically save after every song. If this bothers you, you can turn auto-save off in the Save & Load menu. * Likewise, in Free Mode, you are not presented with the Play Style menu when you enter the mode. You must either set your options by holding Start when you pick a song, or by going into the Options menu ahead of time and setting your play options there. * There are now Attack Effect options available to customize. These are the little flashing/bursting animations that occur when you successfully hit a note. By default, only the Masterpiece Gold attack effect is available, but other attack effects (GF11/GF9, GF10, GF6, and their respective DrumMania counterparts) become available once you unlock their respective skins. * If you have Masterpiece Silver save data present on your memory card, you will have all of the extra skins and wallpapers from Masterpiece Silver available for you to use in Masterpiece Gold. Since this automatically unlocks the GF11/DM10 and GF9/DM8 skins, their corresponding Attack Effects (see above) also become available. I am unsure if this only unlocks skins/wallpapers that you have already unlocked on Masterpiece Silver, or if having any save data at all (unlocked or not) from MPS on your memory card will cause everything to be available in Masterpiece Gold. * In Session mode (even with only 1 DM and 1 GF player playing), the display mode is switched to one with the video area omitted so that all players can have full-sized play areas. This was previously a configurable option on other GF/DM home versions, but it appears to me that this is the only choice for Session on Masterpiece Gold. It's important to keep in mind that in this display mode, Position-B for GuitarFreaks players does effectively nothing (the judgement text is still placed over the note columns) and Combo-Center/Combo-Right also do nothing for DrumMania players -- the combo still annoyingly covers up much of your viewing area. I highly recommend using Combo-Off if you're playing in Session mode. ================================================================= ================================================================= 4. CONTROLS ================================================================= ----------------------------------------------------- 4.1. GuitarFreaks 4.1.1. Official Guitar Controller The standard-issue Guitar Freaks Konami controller isn't bad as standard controllers go. It's perhaps on par with Guitar Hero controllers, with the added benefit of working straight out of the without a need for tinkering (or constant controller- switching). Konami is manufacturing a line of Guitar Freaks Arcade Style Controllers, and they are available online from various retailers for around $249 plus shipping. In my experience they feel identical to the arcade experience (with less sticky buttons, too!) so if you don't mind the price they are very much worth picking up! ABSOLUTELY avoid the Topway "Magical Guitar," which are of notoriously poor quality. The one I bought a few years ago arrived broken in the box, the pick feels like it's held by a simple rubber band, and it feels VERY fragile. If it doesn't break right away, it will soon after. 4.1.2. DUALSHOCK2 Controller Thankfully, Konami figured out what they had for some reason forgotten to put in prior games, and now allows us to fully configure the guitar control functions to any button and/or stick we could possibly want. This allow you to find the setup that's most comfortable for you, and not what Konami thinks you should use! This is handy, but most useful for using a Guitar Hero controller with the game. Read on! 4.1.3. Guitar Hero Controller For those of you who have copies of Guitar Hero lying around your house and don't wish to import (with potentially expensive shipping) a Konami GuitarFreaks controller, there's finally a solution! Now that it's possible to remap individual buttons to whatever function you want them to be for GuitarFreaks, you can even set up the button mapping to work correctly with a Guitar Hero controller! Go into the Options menu and set the following control scheme: Button Function -------------------------------- O Red Triangle Green X Blue D-Pad Up Picking D-Pad Down Picking L2 Wailing The above setup will allow you to use the middle three buttons on the Guitar Hero controller as well as the pick -- all just like a normal GuitarFreaks controller. (I chose the middle three buttons because the "keyed" button is most comfortable as the middle button rather than an end button, at least to me.) One thing that you should be aware of is the fact that Guitar Hero controllers always hold down Left on the D-Pad so the Guitar Hero game can identify the controller, but that obviously causes problems with this game because it will cause the songlist to constantly scroll in one direction, forcing you to unplug the controller for song selection and re-plug the Guitar Hero controller to play the actual song. ----------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------- 4.2. DrumMania 4.2.1. Official Drum Controller The Konami drum controller isn't bad, but the most obvious difference is that it's quite small. The pads are each probably about 6 inches wide, and the entire controller isn't much wider than a typical person's shoulders, which means that you won't really have to rotate to hit all of the pads. Third-party Topway controllers look almost identical, but are significantly less sensitive. It is recommended that you avoid the Topway controllers unless you're certain that they're satisfactory to you. 4.2.2. DUALSHOCK2 Controller Playing DrumMania with the standard PS2 gamepad isn't too bad, actually, and can be quite comfortable depending on the setup. I had some problems with rapid hi-hat or cymbal rolls (due to the hi-hat being on L1/L2 and cymbal on R1/R2) but if you either have flexible hands or change the control setup you shouldn't have any problems even on harder songs. The Dual Shock is a decent option for those who don't care too much about "drum simulation" and just want to have fun. 4.2.3. USB MIDI Drum Kits DrumMania supports a variety of MIDI drum kits, including Yamaha's DTX line (DTX, DTX 2.0, DTXpress, DTXplorer, DTXtreme, etc.), as well as other brands such as Roland. The main requirement is that the drum kit has a MIDI Out port. If you're interested in finding a MIDI drum kit to play the game with, my only advice is to check out eBay or other used-item listings. New, the Yamaha sets are prohibitively expensive (the cheapest model starts at $850) but if you watch eBay closely and jump on good auctions, you can get one for significantly less. I got mine for about $400. Aside from the drum kit, all you need to make it work with your game is a MIDI-to-USB adapter to hook it up to your PS2's USB port. To the best of my knowledge, the game will *only* work with the Yamaha UX-16 adapter, as well as other models in that line such as the UX-92 or UX-256. The UX-16 is far less expensive and does the same thing for our purposes, so it is all you need. You can usually find them on eBay for around $40. ----------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= ================================================================= 5. GAMEPLAY ================================================================= ----------------------------------------------------- 5.1. How To Play This should be second nature to anybody who has played a rhythm game before, but I'll go over the concept of each game really quick for newcomers. The object of the game is to accurately and correctly hit notes as they travel across the screen. You know when to hit the notes by the placement of a horizontal line -- when the notes cross this line exactly, that's when you're supposed to hit them! For GuitarFreaks, hold down the corresponding colored buttons (for instance, if you see a green note heading up the screen, hold down the green button) and move the pick lever while holding down the correct button(s) to hit the note. Notice that you have to hold the colored buttons down BEFORE you pick, as well as during, you can't just press the colored buttons as you pick, otherwise the buttons probably won't be pressed at the exact moment that the pick moves. There are three different "modes" for GuitarFreaks: normal (sometimes called "lead"), bass, and "open-pick." Each mode can have up to three difficulty settings (Basic, Advanced, and Extreme), but not all songs have all difficulty settings available, and not all songs allow you to pick Bass or Open Pick. What's the difference? Well, for Bass, the only difference is that you play the bass guitar part for the song. This often means steadier "walking" bass patterns, but some songs have really active and crazy bass parts as well, so it's not always easier. Open Pick is just like Normal except that an additional note type is added, denoted by a horizontal bar with the word "OPEN" superimposed on it. When you see these notes coming, move the pick but don't hold any colored buttons -- if you do, it counts as a Miss just like not holding the right buttons on a traditional note would do. Open Pick mode is generally more difficult than Normal mode, but that's not always the case. I find Open Pick a little more fun because there's more variety. DrumMania is much the same as GuitarFreaks in concept, the only real difference is that instead of holding buttons and moving a pick lever, you just strike the drum pads with a pair of drumsticks. There are six note types in all -- hi-hat, snare, hi-tom, lo-tom, cymbal, and bass drum or "kick" (operated with a foot pedal). Just hit the proper pad as the notes come down and across the line at the bottom of the screen. Simple enough! ----------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------- 5.2. Navigating Menus To navigate the various menus of the game, use either a regular PS2 controller, or use the following: 5.2.1. GuitarFreaks Left/Right: Red/Blue Confirm: Start Cancel: Select 5.2.2. DrumMania Left/Right: Snare/Lo-Tom Confirm: Cymbal Cancel: Hi-Hat ----------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------- 5.3. Song Selection Screen Controls 5.3.1. GuitarFreaks * To navigate through the songlist, use Red and Green. * To change difficulty (Basic/Advanced/Extreme), hold Green and move the pick twice. * To change between Normal, Bass, and Open Pick, do Pick, Green, Green, Pick. * To change the speed modifier, press Green twice. * To select a song, press Start. To open the gameplay modifiers menu before the song starts, keep holding Start after you press it. * To change the songlist sorting, hold Green and push Select. 5.3.2. DrumMania * To navigate through the songlist, use Snare and Lo-Tom. * To change difficulty (Basic/Advanced/Extreme), tap the Hi-Hat twice. * To cycle through Auto Bass, Auto Hi-Hat, and Auto Cymbal, hit Hi-Tom, Hi-Hat, Hi-Tom, Hi-Tom. * To change the speed modifier, hit the kick pedal twice. * To select a song, hit the cymbal. To open the gameplay modifiers menu before the song starts, hold Start after you select the song. Note that if you are using a MIDI drumkit, there is no Start button so you'll have to hook up a regular PS2 controller to controller port #1 and hold Start on that. * To change the songlist sorting, hit Kick, Hi-Tom, Hi-Tom. ----------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------- 5.4. Gameplay Modifiers 5.4.1. Scoring and Grades When you complete a song, you are given a grade based on your performance. The grades, from best to worst, are SS, S, A, B, C, D, and E. An SS is achieved if you get all Perfects and Greats. For an S, your Good, Poor, and Miss percentages must add up to less than 5%. 5.5.1. Extra Stage In Arcade Mode, you usually only get three songs. However, if your play is good enough, you may be given the chance to play an extra fourth song, and hidden songs that are only available on an Extra Stage are presented to you! To earn an Extra Stage, you must earn at least two points over your first three stages based on the following formula: SS: +2 points S: +1 point A: 0 points B: -1 point C: -2 points D: -3 points E: -4 points So, you can get two S's and an A (for example) and you will earn an Extra Stage. Perhaps the easiest way to do this is to play a very easy Long Version song (a red-bordered song that counts as three stages) and get an S on it. That will count as an S for all three stages, and so it will count as 3 points and get you an Extra Stage. Songs that are only available to play on an Extra Stage (until they are unlocked normally) include: * Kono Ko no Nanatsu no Oiwai ni * Dragon Blade * VITALIZE You must play one of the above three songs to be eligible to earn an Encore/Premium Encore stage (see below). 5.5.2. Encore/Premium Encore Stage Pick one of the red-colored Extra Stage songs (listed in 4.5.1) and do well enough on it to earn a fifth stage, either an Encore or Premium Encore stage! These are very difficult to get, but are the only way to play MODEL DD4 and Concertino in Blue before you unlock them. Encore Stage (MODEL DD4): get 95-97% Perfects on Extra Stage. Premium Encore Stage (Concertino in Blue): get 98% Perfects or more on Extra Stage. ----------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------- 5.6. Gameplay Tips I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a grand master at this game, but I've played enough to provide tips that might be of benefit to people who are just starting out with GF/DM and are look for some general pointers, or for people who are new to music games in general. 5.6.1. General Tips Perhaps the biggest tip I could offer to anyone who is new to any Bemani game is to use the game's hi-speed settings heavily and to recognize their benefit. There may be a few ultra- hardcore old-school DDR players still around these days (though their numbers are dwindling) who feel that speed mods in any music game are cheating and scores achieved through their use are "less impressive" than scores achieved through the use of no hi-speed or, for some people, no mods at all. To be blunt, these people are idiots and you shouldn't take anything they say personally if they try to discredit your scores because you used hi-speed. Now then, why use hi-speed? It makes the notes scroll across the screen faster and more spread out. Therefore, the notes are easier to distinguish from one another and it's easier to make visual sense of complex patterns or fast switches. Additionally, since the notes travel faster down the screen, it becomes much easier to tell precisely when the notes cross the judgement line, so it becomes much easier to accurately time your notes to get Perfects. It goes without saying that you should find the fastest hi-speed that you can read (without the notes becoming too blurry or too fast for you to hit in time). Everyone has their own hi-speed preferences, depending on how fast they can read and how fast their reaction time is. If you're playing at home (which, if you're reading this FAQ, you probably are), then the size of your TV and how far away you are from it when you play will also be factors. I personally play at about x4.0 for DrumMania and x5.5-x6.0 for GuitarFreaks on a typical day. Note that unlike other Bemani games, all songs scroll at the same rate which means that once you find a hi-speed setting you're comfortable with, you can use it for EVERY song in the game! No need to switch hi-speed based on the song's BPM every time! If you do decide for some reason that you don't like your hi-speed setting during the course of a song, hold Start and push Red/Blue (for GuitarFreaks) or Snare/Lo-Tom (for DrumMania) to adjust the hi-speed setting mid-song. In GuitarFreaks, you can also adjust your Position and Combo settings by pressing Green while holding the Start button. Pressing Green will cycle through all possible combinations of Position and Combo (e.g., Position-A/Left, Position-A/Center, Position-A/Right, Position-A/Off, then the same for Position-B, as well as Position-Off.) Other than hi-speed, the main other tip that I can give you is to play. A lot. Play all of the different songs on every difficulty you can manage (and even some you can't). Playing a wide range of songs and difficulties is the only way that you'll expose yourself to a wide variety of note patterns and rhythms, and if you only ever play things you can pass then by definition you'll never pass anything new. Of course, it can be good to go back and play songs that are below your level once in a while too, since even simpler rhythms can be good in improving one's timing. Passed a song a few weeks ago? Go and try to full combo it! 5.6.2. GuitarFreaks The only real general tip that I have for GuitarFreaks that I didn't cover in the "General Tips" section is that it's important to become comfortable with both methods of picking: that is, strumming (pressing down on the pick lever for each note) or rapid "up-down" picking (alternating up and down on the pick lever for each note). Know which to use when. Strumming is better for accuracy and simple slow patterns, while trying to straight down-strum a really fast riff is impossible so you need to switch to up-down picking for those. The downside about up-down picking is that for most people, it's much harder to stay accurate and get as many Perfects as with down-strumming, so it's important to practice it to get better at it. It's truly required once you get to about level 40 songs, which all start to have several fast runs throughout! Other than that, crank up the hi-speed and just practice, practice, practice. Oh, and I might recommend using the "yellow" effector if you're playing in the arcade -- it makes your guitar significantly louder and easier to hear. At home, just adjust the volume, eh? 5.6.3. DrumMania The main tip for DrumMania? Don't rely on auto-anything, hell, don't ever use it if you can manage. Auto Bass is a crutch that seems to be used far too often by players these days, and it takes so much challenge out of the game. Many songs are made difficult solely because of their complex kick patterns, and having those taken out of the equation leaves you playing a song that's rated 60 that plays more like it's rated 25. Lame. If you play in the arcade you have even less of an excuse for auto-bass because you can't blame it on a shoddy foot pedal. Just practice with it and you'll get used to it in no time, sheesh! As far as Auto Hi-Hat and Auto Cymbal, they seem to have only song-specific applications at best: Auto Hi-Hat for things like Funky Sonic World or Right On Time and Auto Cymbal for Day Dream or Herring Roe. The main reason I can see for using these would be if, like a lot of people, your arcade machine's hi-hat or cymbal is of dubious reliability and doesn't register hits a significant portion of the time -- then it's either use Auto or fail every song! As far as mods for the Konami controller's small foot pedal, I would just suggest finding a way to attach it to anything big, heavy, and sturdy. The main problem with it seems to be that it moves around so easily when you press on it, and the main advantage of arcade or DTX footpedals is that they stay perfectly in place and allow you to really throw your weight into them (which you need to do on songs that have quick double-taps and whatnot). Just try to secure it however you can and that alone should make a big difference. Some people have also said that you can find generic foot pedals that will connect to the Konami controller at places like Guitar Center, but I haven't looked myself. The main things that I would look for would be sturdiness and comfort. Make sure you don't have to move your heel to hit the pedal, otherwise your ankle is going to get sore REALLY quick. ----------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= ================================================================= 6. MULTIPLAYER SESSION PLAY (Session) ================================================================= If two or more people want to play together on both the drums and guitar simultaneously, then Session mode is for you! This allows two (or three) players to play together on the guitar and drums (or drums and two guitars if three people are playing). While playing in Session mode, the game looks for each player's controller on specific controller ports, so make sure you use the correct setup: Without MIDI drumkit -------------------- Controller Port #1: DrumMania player Controller Port #2: GuitarFreaks player A Controller Port #3: GuitarFreaks player B (requires multitap) USB port: (empty) With MIDI drumkit ----------------- Controller Port #1: Optional PS2 controller (for DM Select/Start) Controller Port #2: GuitarFreaks player A Controller Port #3: GuitarFreaks player B (requires multitap) USB port: DrumMania player via USB-MIDI adapter I had a hell of a time trying to figure out why the game wouldn't recognize my guitar controller in port #1 while using a USB drumkit, so make sure you remember to plug into the right ports! You can choose either Arcade or Free mode, both of which work the same as their GuitarFreaks or DrumMania mode counterparts. In Session mode, all players share a lifebar, so if one player does poorly then it is possible for all of the players' games to end. Regardless, Session is one of the most fun aspects of the game. Nothing quite matches the fun of cranking up the volume and jamming on a song together with your friends. I might advise, though, to go into the Sound Options menu and set the Drum pan setting to 1 and the Guitar pan settings to 5. If you and your friend sit on your corresponding sides of the screen (drums on left, guitar on right) it'll be much easier to hear what you're playing. You can additionally get a couple of pairs of headphones and a headphone Y-splitter if necessary to be able to hear the distinct drum/guitar left/right separation REALLY well. ================================================================= ================================================================= 7. SONG LIST ================================================================= The format for the song list information is laid out as follows: __________ / CATEGORY \ +---------------------------------------------------------------+ | SONG TITLE | BPM XXX | ARTIST NAME | | | ~ YYY | | |---------------------------------------------------------------| | Normal | Bass | Open | Drum | Notes: | | BSC: XX | BSC: XX | BSC: XX | BSC: XX | | | ADV: XX | ADV: XX | ADV: XX | ADV: XX | | | EXT: XX | EXT: XX | EXT: XX | EXT: XX | | +---------------------------------------------------------------+ | From: | +---------------------------------------------------------------+ CATEGORY: Possibilities include: - NORMAL: Available from the start. - SECRET: Must be unlocked before it can be played. SONG TITLE: Name of the song. Song titles are romanized or translated where necessary. I've done my best to provide accurate romanizations and translations, but if you see any blatant errors or mistranslations (of artist names and kanji especially) please let me know and I'll give you credit. BPM: Beats per minute in the song. Does not affect scroll rate, but can give you an idea of the general feel of the song. Higher numbers mean faster music. Some songs change BPM midway through the song, in which case the lowest and highest BPMs are shown. ARTIST NAME: Name of the credited artist, if any. Cover songs typically do not list an artist. Normal: Difficulties for the guitar note charts on Normal mode. Bass: Difficulties for the guitar note charts on Bass mode. Open: Difficulties for the guitar note charts on Open Pick mode. Drum: Difficulties for the drum note charts. BSC: Basic. ADV: Advanced. EXT: Extreme. Notes: Anything noteworthy or interesting about the song. 7.2 Difficulty Ranking

Have you ever tried to find songs with a certain level of difficulty
but ended up just looking through all of the songs randomly?
Use this list to find exactly what songs/charts have the difficulty
rating you're after.

Key:
BSC - Basic
ADV - Advanced
EXT - Extreme
N - Normal/Guitar
B - Bass
O - Open Pick

Example: "Sobakasu (ADV[B])" would be Bass mode on Advanced
difficulty, while "Concertino in Blue (EXT[O])" would be Open
Pick mode, Extreme difficulty. Obviously, the DrumMania listing
has no Normal/Bass/Open Pick notation.

8. UNLOCK INFORMATION
=================================================================
Songs can be unlocked in two different ways:

-----------------------------------------------------
8.1. Roulette

The unlock system in Masterpiece Gold consists of a 4x4 grid of
panels that covers up a picture underneath. The unlock pictures are
(for songs) typically a picture from the song's banner or animation,
whereas other things such as wallpapers are just the wallpaper image
themselves. Depending on your performance, you will get a differing
number of shapes that randomly shuffle around the board and will stop
when you hit Start. When the shapes stop moving, any shapes that are
on a covered square will uncover that square, revealing that part of
the picture. The picture can be used to tell what your next unlock
is going to be, which is a nice thing I think -- if one of my favorite
songs is about to be unlocked, I'm more willing to play a few extra
rounds until I get it. :D

Luckily, Konami realized that unlocking went a little too slowly in
Masterpiece Silver and have made it easier to unlock things by making
the moving shapes only target panels that are still uncovered -- it
only takes about two or three spins to unlock each item now, as
opposed to maybe 4 or 5 on Masterpiece Silver!

Basically, as the shapes flash around on the panels, they can
fluctuate slightly (by one or two). It goes too fast to gauge manually,
so it's really just a matter of luck. This is especially noticeable
when you have enough shapes to fill up all of the remaining panels, but
occasionally when the shapes are moving around there will be an empty
panel when there hadn't been one before. Getting Extra Stage will
increase the number of panels you get, and getting Encore or Premium
Encore will increase it further. If the number of panels that you've
earned exceeds the number remaining on the grid, there will be no
fluctuation (i.e., you will ALWAYS uncover all of the remaining panels)
so earning Encore/Premium Encore is a good way to do this.

Though it may go without saying, if you only have one or two panels
left to uncover, it's far faster to pass one song and then fail the
second one since even by only passing one song you'll get a couple
shapes and will uncover the whole picture. Any additional shapes you
earn would otherwise be wasted.

Also, it seems to me that this time around, whenever you unlock a new
skin, the corresponding wallpaper will ALWAYS be the very next thing
you unlock. At least, that happened to me with both the GF10 skin and
the GF6 skin.

***RMZ'S OMG SUGOI SUPERFAST UNLOCKING TIPS! ^_^v^_^v***

So, to the best of my knowledge I was the first person in the English-speaking
community to get a full unlock with this game, so let me share my speed
unlocking tips if you want to get the game unlocked as fast as possible.

1. Long version songs are WAY more efficient.

This means that one long version song (typically 4:00) gives you just as
many panels as three regular songs (average of 1:45 apiece for a total of
5:15), so you're saving over a minute for sticking to long versions, not
even counting time you would have spend on the song select screen between
each song. CLASSIC PARTY Revival is *especially* great for this because
it's only 3:20 in length (about the length of TWO normal songs) but still
counts as 3 stages :D

2. Play easier stuff to get high grades.

It may be a little boring, but you'll unlock stuff faster if you get
better grades. Just stick to stuff you can S in most cases, to ensure
that you get Extra Stage every time. You'll notice this if you happen
to download the 100% unlocked save file that I have on GameFAQs (though
if you downloaded that, why are you reading the unlocking tips
section...?). You'll see that I played mostly the easier stuff on DM
(with a few exceptions) in order to keep my average grade up in the
S/SS range so unlocking would go quicker. (Pay no attention to the GF
data on that file, that was another person who was helping me out with
the unlocking :D) This leads naturally into #3...

3. Encore encore encore.

Get encore/premium encore as much as you possibly can. Getting Extra
Stage boosts your shape count a bit, but getting encore/premium encore
really kicks your unlocking speed into overdrive. If you can get
at least MODEL DD4 every single time you play, you'll get every new
picture in two spins, almost guaranteed. To do this, get Extra Stage
and then pick one of the three red songs. Get 95% Perfects or more and
then you'll have your encore stage :) Or, if you're really H.S. (hot,
uh...sausages) you can get Premium Encore for 98% Perfects or more.
Well, that either means you're hot sausages or you just picked VITALIZE.

---------------------------
Here's the order that things unlock in Roulette:

1. Random song
2. Random skin (either GF10/dm9 or GF6/dm5)
3. Wallpaper corresponding to the skin unlocked in #2
4-34. All the rest of the normal songs/wallpapers/skins
35-37. Dragon Blade, VITALIZE, Kono Ko no Nanatsu no Oiwai ni (random order)
38. MODEL DD4
39. Concertino in Blue
---------------------------

Here is a complete list of items available to unlock, along with
a brief description of their unlock picture:

8.2. Time-Release Unlocking

Turn Roulette OFF in the Options menu to enable time-release
unlocking. The game counts the amount of time that you have
spent playing songs (being in the menu doesn't count, it has to
be while a song is playing), and when you exceed the listed
totals the songs are unlocked. This is a good way to speed-
unlock your game. Just get a controller that has a Start-button
turbo fire (sometimes called Slow-mo), start Arcade mode, turn
on the turbo fire, and let the game loop over and over through
Arcade mode while you sleep or go to work/school! This also
works in Free Mode but make sure that you have Forced Gameover
set to On.

9. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
=================================================================
Q. This FAQ seems awfully similar to your other GF/DM FAQs.

A: Yes, it is. Did you expect otherwise? In seriousness, though,
most of the beginner's tips and stuff are pretty universal and
there is no real need to reword or change any of that sort of
stuff from game to game. I figure that the real thing that
most experienced players would use the FAQ for are the quick-
reference song ratings and difficulty ranking (maybe unlock
information), so just skip over the parts you have already
read in my other FAQ, and accept that some new players might
only get one game, and otherwise wouldn't be exposed to those
tips and stuff if I put them into only one FAQ.

Q. What is ee'MALL? Is there a soundtrack?

A: ee'MALL was an arcade product Konami made that allowed people to
earn points by playing games and unlocking new exclusive songs
to play in Pop'n Music and GuitarFreaks & DrumMania. I'm not
sure if you could also pay cash for the songs too, but it was
a way to play "bonus" songs not normally available in the games.
The home versions of the Pop'n Music series often include a handful
of ee'MALL songs per game as well -- often from GF&DM, in fact,
such as Jet Coaster Girl, Sotto, and Chikara.
Konami has released a soundtrack for all of the original ee'MALL
     songs entitled "ee'MALL & ee'MALL 2nd Avenue Original Soundtrack"
that has all of the songs that were composed for ee'MALL on it!
This doesn't include songs from other Bemani games (like how Memories
is from IIDX and wasn't composed just for ee'MALL), but all songs
that are exclusive to ee'MALL are on it.

Q. How do skill points work?

A: Your numerical skill points score for a song is a function of your
Perfects, Greats, and Max Combo, and your "skill percent" is just
how close you were to the maximum possible skill point value.
Using Light or Auto-anything lowers your skill points by half.

* Konami, for making so many great Bemani games and continuing
to make them even though they're not the most profitable
    type of game out there.

* GurtyGurt, for making his original GF/DM FAQs back in the old
GF5/DM4 days over five years ago and providing inspiration
for me to make my own.

* Yamaha for producing your DTX series of drumkits, which provides
a wonderful DM home experience (plus can be used for things other
    than DM, imagine that :D)

* Remy of VJ Army (vjarmy.com/iidx, popnnavy.com), whose IIDX-
and Pop'n-based ranking site and forums have led to one of
the friendliest, most intelligent, and least noobish Bemani
