Introduction =================== Welcome to my Dynasty Warriors 5: Xtreme Legends Items FAQ. The purpose of this guide is to provide a complete list of the items available in KOEI's expansion to Dynasty Warriors 5, as well as the requirements to unlock special items. To my knowledge, there is no strategy guide for this game; hence the information provided here is mostly based on my experience. However, I have tested the details several times (at least) and I am confident in the effectiveness of what I have written. This guide is a work in progress. There are special items from the original DW5 that I have not yet found in DW5:XL, but the section regarding new special items that can be found only in DW5:XL is complete. ============== 2. Saddles ============== Saddles were already available in the original Dynasty Warriors 5, but can also be obtained in Dynasty Warriors 5: Xtreme Legends' Legend Mode. I have included instructions ONLY for Legend Mode; for Musou Mode or Free Mode instructions, consult the Special Items FAQs posted for the original Dynasty Warriors 5. -------------------- Red Hare Harness -------------------- Item Description: Begin stage mounted on Red Hare Stage: Battle of Yan Province Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Before Cao Cao arrives, personally occupy all five enemy attack bases and defeat Li Dian, Man Chong and Yue Jin (their officers are irrelevant), while keeping KO count below 300. Once the three gates of Pu Yang Castle have been surrounded, achieve a KO count of 300. Location of Valuable Item: Central area, north from the river. Recommendations: Play as Lu Bu. About 5 minutes into the stage, Xun Yu calls for an ambush party to hunt down Lu Bu and he may very possibly die if not assisted soon enough; since he is the commander, his death means defeat. While assisting him is not a major problem under normal circumstances, it may be difficult to help him and keep KO count below 300. Note: Cao Cao arrives approximately 10 minutes after the battle begins. -------------------- Hex Mark Harness -------------------- Item Description: Begin stage mounted on Hex Mark Stage: Rescue at Lou Sang Village Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Rescue the three villages, in any order, by defeating Bo Zhang, Gao Sheng, Zhang Man Cheng, Yan Zheng, Guan Hai and Chen Yuanzhi. Location of Valuable Item: Central area, by lower right gate. Recommendations: Entering the central area triggers a phantom army to appear all over the map; avoid this area until picking up the valuable item. ----------------- Storm Harness ----------------- Item Description: Begin stage mounted on Storm Runner Stage: Imperial Rescue Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Without encountering Li Jue, defeat Li Jue's officers Hu Che Er, Li Meng and Zhao Cen. Then defeat Li Jue and have the Emperor's carriage enter any of the two lower branches of the western road completely unharmed. Location of Valuable Item: Northwest area, by the entrance to the lower right branch of the western road. Recommendations: + Choose a character with good crowd control skills, since a single enemy soldier standing in the carriage's way is enough to make it stop and may even harm it. + Close all enemy gates along the way (one on the northeast corner, one around the center of the northern path, and two on the northwest corner). + Start by going east and defeating Li Jue's three officers, as well as the units that accompany them. + Avoid encountering Li Jue until the northeast area is clear and the enemy gate closed; that way the carriage will not be surrounded by enemy units when it is rescued. + Pull Li Jue away from the carriage before fighting him. If the carriage is harmed, the item will be lost. + Use the detailed map (R2) while fighting down the pathway and make sure no enemy soldiers get past you. The item is not lost if enemy units get to the carriage, but too much delay in the advance might become a problem once Lu Bu's forces arrive (about 4 minutes into the stage). + Clear the northwest corner of enemies and close the two gates as soon as possible. Also defeat Guo Si and Zhang Ji (according to my various tests, to defeat their subgenerals is not required, though recommended if they are in position of threatening the safety of the carriage). + When Lu Bu's forces arrive, they will quickly advance towards the northwest corner. Keep them away from the carriage. Note: When Li Jue is encountered, there is a report telling that "Li Jue is interfering with ". From what I have tested, if he is encountered while his officers are still alive, the item does not appear. What branch of the western road the carriage takes after clearing the northern road depends on whether or not Lu Bu's forces have started pursuit by that time. The item appears either way. ------------------ Shadow Harness ** COMING SOON ** ------------------ Item Description: Begin stage mounted on Shadow Runner Stage: Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Location of Valuable Item: -------------------- Elephant Harness -------------------- Item Description: Begin stage mounted on Elephant Stage: Showdown at Nan Zhong Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Defeat Xiahou Ba; defeat Jia Kui and eliminate the Wei Destroyers (6 total). These requirements may be met in any order. Location of Valuable Item: Central area, south from the Nanman fence. Recommendations: Equip Shadow Harness and play a character with a good horseback attack, since Destroyers work only against units on foot. Fully trained Meng Huo's horseback charge attack works nicely for this task because it is long-ranged, easy to aim and powerful enough to one-shot Destroyers in Normal or lower difficulty. =========== 3. Orbs =========== Orbs were already available in the original Dynasty Warriors 5, but can also be obtained in Dynasty Warriors 5: Xtreme Legends' Legend Mode. I have included instructions ONLY for Legend Mode; for Musou Mode or Free Mode instructions, consult the Special Items FAQs posted for the original Dynasty Warriors 5. All orbs must be obtained in Hard difficulty level. ------------ Fire Orb ** COMING SOON ** ------------ Item Description: Adds fire damage to attacks Stage: Difficulty Level: Hard Requirements: Location of Valuable Item: ----------- Ice Orb ----------- Item Description: Enemies may be temporarily frozen Stage: Battle of Mt. Qi Difficulty Level: Hard Requirements: Ignore Zhuge Liang's instructions to feign retreat; defeat Xiahou Ba, Dai Ling, Fei Yao and Zhang He, in any order, and achieve a KO count of 250. Location of Valuable Item: Left side of the north area, by the mountain range. Note: Defeating subgenerals is not necessary. -------------- Shadow Orb -------------- Item Description: Empties Musou Gauge and enemies may be defeated in one blow Stage: Battle of Jia Meng Gate Difficulty Level: Hard Requirements: Convince Ma Chao of joining Liu Bei's forces by defeating him twice before he goes back to protect Zhang Lu. Location of Valuable Item: Northeast corner, in the middle of Zhang Lu's main camp. ------------- Light Orb ** COMING SOON ** ------------- Item Description: Attacks break through the enemy's guard Stage: Difficulty Level: Hard Requirements: Location of Valuable Item: ============ 4. Items ============ The following items may be found at random, in any stage. There are certain wooden crates that contain items, and some enemy officers drop an item when defeated. While there is no difficulty level requirement, higher difficulty improves the chances of finding items of higher level. Note: Item bonuses DO stack with weapon bonuses. ------------------ Peacock Amulet ------------------ Item Description: Life MAX increases Maximum Level: 20 Stage: Any Difficulty Level: Any ----------------- Dragon Amulet ----------------- Item Description: Life MAX increases Maximum Level: 20 Stage: Any Difficulty Level: Any ---------------- Tiger Amulet ---------------- Item Description: Attack increases Maximum Level: 20 Stage: Any Difficulty Level: Any ------------------- Tortoise Amulet ------------------- Item Description: Defense increases Maximum Level: 20 Stage: Any Difficulty Level: Any ---------------- Speed Scroll ---------------- Item Description: Character's speed increases Maximum Level: 20 Stage: Any Difficulty Level: Any --------------- Huang's Bow --------------- Item Description: Bow Attack & Defense increase Maximum Level: 20 Stage: Any Difficulty Level: Any --------------- Horned Helm --------------- Item Description: Mounted Attack & Defense increase Maximum Level: 20 Stage: Any Difficulty Level: Any ------------------- Seven Star Sash ------------------- Item Description: Luck increases Maximum Level: 20 Stage: Any Difficulty Level: Any ----------- Ginseng ----------- Item Description: Musou Gauge fills faster Maximum Level: 20 Stage: Any Difficulty Level: Any ----------------- Herbal Remedy ----------------- Item Description: Charge Attack strength increases Maximum Level: 20 Stage: Any Difficulty Level: Any ==================== 5. Special Items ==================== The following items were already available in the original Dynasty Warriors 5, but can also be obtained in Dynasty Warriors 5: Xtreme Legends' Legend Mode. I have included instructions ONLY for Legend Mode; for Musou Mode or Free Mode instructions, consult the Special Items FAQs posted for the original Dynasty Warriors 5. -------------- Art of War ** COMING SOON ** -------------- Item Description: Ability boost items have longer effect Stage: Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Location of Valuable Item: ------------------ Survival Guide ------------------ Item Description: Attack doubles when knocked down and health is low Stage: Battle of Shi Ting Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Secure the northeast and southwest flanks (this includes defeating Xu Huang and Xu Zhu, personally), rescue Sun Quan by defeating Jia Kui and Wang Shuang before Zhou Fang defects to Wu, collapse the two bridges on the southwest in order to stop Wei's pincer attack, and have Lu Xun's fire attack succeed. Location of Valuable Item: Lower right corner of the central area. How to do it: + Defeat Zhang Hu and Xiahou Hui (east) and Xin Pi and Xiahou Ba (south). Which side is aided first does not matter. + Once both sides have been cleared, proceed to the closest enemy attack base, take it and defeat the enemy officers nearby: Fei Yao, Wen Pin and Xu Huang on the northeast; Xiahou Shang, Cao Ren and Xu Zhu on the southwest. It does not matter if your allies defeat Cao Ren or Wen Pin; just make sure you get the KO for Xu Huang and Xu Zhu. (NOTE: Xu Huang and Xu Zhu arrive during the battle, so wait for them if they are not there yet when you take the corresponding enemy base.) + On the way to the next base, stop by Sun Quan and rescue him from Jia Kui and Wang Shang, who should be attacking him by then. + Take the next enemy attack base. Zhou Fang will defect to Wu and the Wu army will advance towards Cao Xiu. Soon afterwards, Cao Zhang and his subgeneral Wang Lang will appear on the southeast corner, and Lu Xun will send two task units to destroy the bridges in the area. You may defeat Wang Lang in order to protect the task units, but let Cao Zhang live. The bridges will soon be destroyed, and if Cao Zhang is still alive, Lu Xun will launch a fire attack. The valuable item appears upon success. -------------------- Bodyguard Manual -------------------- Item Description: Bodyguards become stronger Stage: The Ten Eunuchs' Rebellion Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Foil Dong Zhuo's plan by defeating the fake Ten Eunuchs Dan Gui, Cao Jie and Hou Lan, while He Jin is alive. Location of Valuable Item: Northeast corner, by He Jin's location. Note: He Jin is severely wounded when the fake eunuchs appear, so they must be eliminated quickly in order to save him. Defeating the other eunuchs near He Jin makes things easier and does not affect the requirements to unlock the item. -------------- Demon Band -------------- Item Description: Extends the length of the Musou Rage Stage: Battle of Jia Meng Gate Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Achieve a KO count of 200. Location of Valuable Item: Northeast corner of the map. ---------------- Way of Musou ** COMING SOON ** ---------------- Item Description: Can use True Musou Attack regardless of health Stage: Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Location of Valuable Item: --------------- Wind Scroll --------------- Item Description: Attack range increases Stage: The Two Qiaos Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Defeat Zuo Ci. Location of Valuable Item: Left side of the northeast area. --------------- Fire Arrows --------------- Item Description: Can use fire arrows Stage: Battle of Han Shui Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Defeat Xu Huang before he destroys the southern bridge to the Wei Main Camp. Location of Valuable Item: West side, across from the Shu Main Camp. Note: Xu Huang arrives approximately 8 minutes after the battle begins. If the Wei Main Camp has not been captured and Zhao Yun has succeeded in defending the Shu Main Camp, he will advance towards the bridge and destroy it; otherwise he will just charge toward the Shu Main Camp. Whichever the case, if Xu Huang is defeated while the bridge is still standing, the Fire Arrows will appear. -------------- Arm Guards -------------- Item Description: No damage taken during charge attacks Stage: Battle of Mai Castle Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Defeat the enemies that come near Mai Castle: Zhu Ling, Man Chong, Niu Jin, Jiang Qin, Cheng Pu, Zhu Ran, Xu Sheng and Xu Huang. Secure the three roads leading to Shu by taking the three enemy gates on the east side and defeating Ma Zhong and Lu Xun. When Gan Ning appears, defeat him and Han Dang, his subgeneral. Location of Valuable Item: Inside Mai Castle, on the northeast corner. ---------------- Tiger Collar ** COMING SOON ** ---------------- Item Description: Begin stage accompanied by a tiger Stage: Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Location of Valuable Item: ---------------- Green Scroll ---------------- Item Description: Attack increases but defense increases Stage: Battle of Han Shui Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Succeed in defending the Shu Main Camp until Zhuge Liang arrives; defeat Xu Huang after he has destroyed the Wei Main Camp's southern bridge. Location of Valuable Item: Northeast corner, inside the Wei Main Camp. Note: Cao Pi must be alive for Xu Huang to destroy the bridge; he will become enraged upon doing so. If Xu Huang is defeated before he destroys the bridge, the Fire Arrows will appear instead. --------------- Musou Armor ** COMING SOON ** --------------- Item Description: Wearer not stunned by bow attacks Stage: Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Location of Valuable Item: ----------------- Tribal Remedy ** COMING SOON ** ----------------- Item Description: Health recovers for every 100 enemies defeated Stage: Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Location of Valuable Item: -------------------- Serpent Earrings ** COMING SOON ** -------------------- Item Description: Attack increases for every 100 enemies defeated Stage: Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Location of Valuable Item: ======================== 6. New Special Items ======================== The following items are exclusive of Dynasty Warriors 5: Xtreme Legends and must be obtained in Legend Mode. ----------------- Naga Earrings ----------------- Item Description: Defense increases for every 100 enemies defeated Stage: Battle of Xin Castle Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Within 2 minutes from the beginning of the stage, defeat Deng Xian, Li Fu, Shen Dan and Shen Yi, in any order, and achieve a KO count of 80. Location of Valuable Item: Inside Xin Castle, by the northern gate. Recommendations: + Equip Red Hare or Shadow Harness and choose a character with long range and outstanding horseback attack skills, such as Pang De or Ma Chao. + Do not stop for any reason. Kill the enemy generals and try to complete the KO count of 80 along the way; whether the 80th KO occurs before or after the last general is defeated, the item will appear. + Although the four enemy officers may be defeated in any order, the most efficient route is: Deng Xian, Li Fu, Shen Yi, Shen Dan (from Xu Huang's starting point). The second most efficient route is: Shen Dan, Shen Yi, Li Fu, Deng Xian (starting on the west side of the map). + For best results, play Easy or Novice difficulty. Note: The starting position for characters other than Sima Yi, Xu Huang and Cao Pi is determined by their kingdom. Wei and Wu start on the northeast, near Xu Huang; Shu starts on the left branch of the western road, near Cao Pi; and other kingdoms start on the right branch of the western road, near Sima Yi. --------------- Dragon Arms --------------- Item Description: Can jump during Charge Attacks Stage: Battle of Mt. Qi Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Ignore Zhuge Liang's orders and defeat Xiahou Ba, Dai Ling and Fei Yao, in any order; then defeat Zhang He. Location of Valuable Item: Northeast corner, on the road to the south from Sima Yi's main camp. Note: Defeating subgenerals is not required. --------------------- True Way of Musou --------------------- Item Description: Strength and duration of Musou Attack increases Stage: Battle of Mai Castle Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Achieve a KO count of 1000. Location of Valuable Item: Inside Mai Castle, on the southwest corner. -------------- Ice Arrows -------------- Item Description: Can use ice arrows Stage: Battle of Yang Ping Gate Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Within 5 minutes from the beginning of the stage, destroy the 20 statues (9 on the second level, 2 on the east road near the third level, and 9 on the third level). Location of Valuable Item: Inside the castle, by the northern gate. Recommendations: Equip Shadow Harness and play a character with outstanding horseback attack skills, such as Pang De, Ma Chao or Zhou Tai. It takes several hits to destroy each statue and enemy troops make it difficult to do so fast enough. Always take the roads on the east, since the west side is blocked. ---------------- Vampire Arms ---------------- Item Description: Health restored by guarding just before an enemy attack Stage: The Ten Eunuchs' Rebellion Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Allow He Jin to be defeated. Defeat four Rogue Chiefs. Location of Valuable Item: Lower southwest quadrant, between the gate and the corner. Note: The Emperor's carriage appears by the southern gate, shortly after He Jin is defeated. A small unit of rogues led by a Rogue Chief comes through that same gate and try to attack the carriage; more arrive later, each of them approximately 1 minute after the last. Meanwhile, the Ten Eunuchs reappear with their troops. Let your allies take care of them until the fourth Rogue Chief is defeated, because once all eunuchs are defeated Zhang Rang comes out, the carriage begins to retreat and no more rogue units show up. ----------------- Meat Bun Sack ----------------- Item Description: Defeated enemies drop meat buns at a set probability Stage: Battle of Jia Meng Gate Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Defeat Yang Ren, Yang Ang and Yang Song, in any order, without having previously defeated any other enemy officers. Location of Valuable Item: Straight south from the central enemy defense base. -------------- Kirin Hoof -------------- Item Description: Increases the strength of your mounts and tigers Stage: Showdown at Nan Zhong Difficulty Level: Any Requirements: Defeat Xu Huang. Location of Valuable Item: Northeast corner, on the road to Sima Yi's camp. ================================= 7. Frequently Asked Questions ================================= Q. Do item bonuses stack with weapon bonuses? A. Yes, they do. I indicated so in section 3, but might as well do it here as well. Q. Can I get more than one special item while playing a stage once? A. Yes, you can. Fulfill the requirements for both special items and they will appear at their corresponding location. Q. I didn't do everything you listed as requirements and still got the item. A. Well, that is not really a question, but I am very much aware of the fact that I might have included unnecessary steps. This is because there is no strategy guide for DW5:XL (at least not in English) and I had to find most of these items on my own. If you see any unnecessary requirements on my guide and consider them worthy of mention, feel free to let me know; I only ask that it is done in a clear, detailed and respectful way, and that the subject of your message states that it is related to GameFAQs or DW5:XL. I will verify the information and give credit to the person who contributed anything I decide to include in this guide. Q. I did everything you said, but didn't get the item. A. That is more of a complaint than a question, but before further complaining, make sure you have, in fact, done everything I said. This includes: playing Hard difficulty level in the case of orbs, personally defeating any enemy generals and/or subgenerals when indicated, meeting the requirements within the specified time limit (if any), etc. If you are absolutely sure you did as I said and still did not get the item you were trying for, feel free to e-mail me, providing detailed information of what you did. Again, be clear and respectful, and have the subject of your message indicate you are writing to me about GameFAQs or DW5:XL. I will run my own tests and reply as soon as possible. Q. When are you going to finish this guide? A. As soon as I possibly can. It is my winter break project and I dedicate time to it every day. I do not usually submit incomplete guides, but this might take a while and it would be awful if all this work were to go to waste. ============= 8. Thanks ============= + To KOEI, for creating the Dynasty Warriors series. + To the people who contributed the codes that helped me find some of the less obvious items, such as the Ice Arrows and Naga Earrings. + To the undying spirits of Love, Honor, Sorrow, Dragon, Truth, Sword and Chaos. + To GameFAQs, for publishing my work. ======================================== 9.
