From what I understand, Nightmare is the personification of the spirit of the cursed sword, Soul Edge. The 3 key things to identify Nightmare are: blue(azure) armor, red eyes, and the really cool looking demonic arm of his that drains the souls right out of people. In previous games (soul calibur II is the only one i've played or seen) Nightmare starts off wielding the Soul Edge, but seeks to fully repair it (or ressurect, which ever one makes more sense) in order to cover the world in darkness. Also, in the previous games, Nightmare inhabits the body of Siegfried... so why is he playable now? Back in Soul Calibur II, Siegfried was fighting a losing battle within himself to ward off the influence of the Soul Edge, but would be taken over by the cursed sword while he slept. He'd awaken every day to the people he had slaughtered as Nightmare the night before... and, eventually, he was fully corrupted by the Soul Edge and become Nightmare once again. Soul Calibur III is supposed to take off right from the end of SCII... Siegfried regains control of his body after a massive struggle with the Soul Edge's influence. When Siegfried regained control of his body, his demonic arm returned to normal and he tossed the Soul Edge onto the floor. Just then, the Soul Calibur appeared before him... when he grabbed the Soul Calibur it turned into the 2-hander one he uses in the game, and he drove the Soul Calibur into the evil eye of the Soul Edge (in an attempt to destroy it). As a last effort, the Soul Edge tried to absorb the Soul Calibur (the tentacle things in the opening movie), but the holy sword countered by sealing the power of the sword away (the flash of light that followed). How's Nightmare in the game then, you ask? Well, or at least its what the game says, when Siegfried pierced the cursed sword with the holy one, he failed to notice its spirit escape the blade and take refuge in the casted aside azure armor. Since the spirit didn't have the sword, it was nothing more than a pile of immobilized crap... then Zasalamel came along. Seeking to ressurect the Soul Edge to its full power in order to override his own curse, Zasalamel used magic and souls to animate the azure armor. When Nightmare became alive once again, a new sword appeared in his hand..... the Phantom Blade. The Phantom blade only allows Nightmare to move, and since its power is directly proportional to his own, he must feed the blade to feed himself or suffer the consequence of not being mobile again. --------------------------------------------------------------------- A) Character Profile --------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: This part came from the game itself, so thank Namco for this section. Name: Nightmare Age: Existed since ancient times as Soul Edge Birthplace: Unknown Height: 5'6" Weight: 209 lbs Birth Date: Unknown Blood Type: Unknown Weapon: Soul Edge (Zweihander type) Weapon Name: Soul Edge (Phantom) Discipline: Style memorized by the armor Family: Controls a loyal servant, Tira In the instant that the spirit sword pierced the cursed sword, no one noticed the will of Soul Edge escape from the sword. It escaped into the remains of the armor worn by Nightmare, armor which had struck fear into countless men. Lacking Soul Edge, however, it could not even move this bodiless, empty shell of a host. After a time, a man with a scythe came to visit the place. He seemed to understand everything that had happened, and exchanged a wordless conversation with the cursed sword. After a few moments, the man agreed to help. The man with the scythe performed a ritual of ancient arts. The energy of the cursed sword and the swirling spirits of this place were woven together and bound into the remains of the armor. The soul of the cursed sword regained its body, and a tremendous, bizarre sword appeared in its hand. The memory etched into the armor had taken on physical form. Having aquired a new body, Soul Edge unleashed its hunger upon the land, devouring all in its path. The souls of those who fell before it would find peace not even in death. 'More...more!' In order to maintain its body, and in order to increase its evil energy, the Azure Knight sought stronger, richer souls. In the end, the twisted compass directing its path would surely point towards freeing Soul Edge itself. Rumors of a merciless butcher and the terror of the azure nightmare spread throughout Europe once again. --------------------------------------------------------------------- B) Weapons --------------------------------------------------------------------- Below is a list of Nightmare's weapons, their effects (if any), and how to unlock them.
