Version History [vershis] = ================================ Version 1.1: - Finally got his level 11 weapon, and added some reader input. Not too much extra on this update. Pretty much near completion, I think. Version 1.0: - Opened up the guide, and filled in practically every section with information. Hopefully, this will be helpful to you all. Still need to get his level 11 weapon, though. Hopefully I'll find some time to. ===================================== = 2. Zhang Fei's History [zhanghis] = ===================================== From the Encyclopedia (Available in the game): "Zhang Fei: 168 - 221 An officer of Shu and member of the Five Tigers. Sworn brother of Liu Bei and Guan Yu. At the Battle of Chang Ban he alone rode out on the Chang Ban Bridge and gave a poweful shout, frightening off one million of Cao Cao's troops, who were in pursuit. A lover of wine and drink, it often leads to his defeat in battle more times than not." From the Kongming.net archives: "Zhang Fei, styled Yide, was a native of Zhuo commandery, and had dealings with Guan Yu and Liu Bei during his earlier days. Guan Yu was older than him by several years hence Zhang Fei treated him like an elder brother. Liu Bei served Cao Cao during the annexation of Lü Bu. During this time, Zhang Fei followed Liu Bei to Xu (Du), and Cao Cao appointed him as Zhonglang Jiang. Subsequently, Liu Bei went against Cao Cao to join Yuan Shao and Liu Biao. When Liu Biao passed away, Cao Cao entered Jingzhou and Liu Bei had to flee to Jiangnan. Cao Cao pursued and within one day and night his army reached Changban of Dangyang. Upon hearing the arrival of Cao Cao’s troops, Liu Bei abandoned his wife and child and commanded Zhang Fei to lead 20 horsemen to guard the rear. Zhang Fei destroyed a bridge and guarding at the waters, he glared and pointed his spear saying, “I am Zhang Yide, and anyone can come and challenge me to fight to the death!” None of the enemies dared to venture near, hence a clashing of the armies was avoided. After that, Liu Bei was able to secure Jiangnan and he appointed Zhang Fei as the governor of Yidu, Zhenglu Jiangjun (General Who Subdues the Caitiffs) and also the title of Marquis of Xinting, and subsequently he was transferred to Nanjun. When Liu Bei entered Yizhou, and even invaded Liu Zhang, Zhang Fei, Zhuge Liang and the rest of the troops followed the flow of the river and in the process pacified the various prefectures and commanderies in the region. They reached Jiangzhou and conquered Liu Zhang’s general Yan Yan, governor of Ba Commandery, alive. Zhang Fei scolded Yan Yan, “The army is here and why do you not surrender, instead attempting to go against us?” Yan Yan replied, “You people have no reason to come and invade our lands. In our lands, there will only be headless generals and no surrendering generals.” Zhang Fei was wrathful and ordered his soldiers to behead him, but Yan Yan did not change his expression and retorted, “If you want to kill me, by all means do so, why lose your temper?” Zhang Fei was moved by his words and released him and treated him like an honorable guest. Zhang Fei moved on in Yizhou winning all the battles and finally met up with Liu Bei’s troops in Chengdu. Yizhou was eventually pacified and Zhuge Liang, Fa Zheng, Zhang Fei and Guan Yu were each awarded 500 catties of gold, 1,000 catties of silver, 5,000 units of money and 1,000 bales of silk; the rest of the riches were distributed to the rest of the ranks. Zhang Fei was also appointed as the governor of Baxi in the process. Cao Cao conquered Zhang Lu and stationed Xiahou Yuan and Zhang He to guard Hanchuan. Zhang He led some troops from the main army to go south to Baxi and attempted to relocate the civilians to Hanzhong. His army entered Dangqu, Dangshi and fought with Zhang Fei’s army for some fifty days. Zhang Fei led his ten thousand or so elite troops and ambushed Zhang He’s men from another direction. The mountain road was narrow and Zhang He’s army was unable to assist each other at both ends, thus Zhang Fei scored a victory against him. Zhang He was forced to abandon his horse and escape through the mountainous regions with only dozens of men. In the end, Zhang He led his army to retreat back to Nanzheng, thus the people of Ba reclaimed their peace. When Liu Bei became the Prince of Hanzhong, he gave Zhang Fei the superficial title of You Jiangjun (General of the Left). During the first year of ZhangWu (AD 221), Zhang Fei was appointed as Cheqi Jiangjun (General of Chariots and Cavalry), Colonel Director of the Retainers and further given the title of Marquis of Xixiang. In the records of Liu Bei’s speech, it says that, “I [Liu Bei] act according to the will of heaven in a bid to eradicate the unrest in the country and bring order to the land. Presently, there are many caitiffs wreaking havoc, thus causing suffering among the people. Those who think of Han would be waiting anxiously for actions to be taken against the unrest. I myself am worried, as I sit restlessly and unable to sense the taste of food; as I gather the armies to listen to my promise [to heaven] and my desire to execute the will of heaven. I need your loyalty and I need to gather the talents of the land and may this mission be spread far and wide, to be made obvious to all, to alert those nobles holding positions in the capital. With the blessing of heaven, I will reward the virtuous and annihilate the wicked.” In the beginning, Zhang Fei was deemed to be inferior to Guan Yu despite his strength and might, but Wei advisors like Cheng Yu claimed that Guan Yu and Zhang Fei were “capable of fighting ten thousand men”. Guan Yu was good to his subordinates but arrogant toward the rest of the officials, on the contrary, Zhang Fei was respectful toward the gentlemen but abusive toward his inferiors. Liu Bei often reminded him, “You [Zhang Fei] kill excessively and often whip your soldiers. Beware that one day you would be in trouble with your subordinates.” Zhang Fei was worried but he did not reform. When Liu Bei had a campaign against Wu, Zhang Fei was put in charge of some tens of thousands of troops, and he was supposed to meet up at Jiangzhou from Langzhong. Before his arrival, his subordinates Zhang Da and Fan Qiang killed him and brought his decapitated head to surrender to Sun Quan. The Chief Controller in Zhang Fei’s camp reported the incident to Liu Bei and upon seeing the presence of the report from the Chief Controller, Liu Bei exclaimed, “Zhang Fei has died!” Zhang Fei was then given a posthumous title of Marquis of Yueheng. His eldest son Zhang Bao died early, whilst his second son Zhang Shao succeeded his father and was made a palace attendant and one of the imperial secretariats. Zhang Bao’s son Zhang Zun was also made an imperial secretariat and followed Zhuge Zhan to Mianzhu, whereby he was killed in a battle against Deng Ai." * Credit to the Kongming.net archives for the information above. ========================================== = 3. Pros and Cons of Zhang Fei [procon] = ========================================== Pros: - Strong. * He is an amazingly strong character, and his level 10/level 11 weapons help to prove this point. - Good moveset. * Several of his moves are simply awesome for clearing crowds. Cons: - Slow. * One of the slowest characters in the game, and the Speed Scroll does little to help this fact. - Juggling Musou. * Some people don't consider this bad. However, juggling has a 1/2 damage handicap. Overall: Zhang Fei is an above average character, and definitely worth trying out. Equipped with a saddle, he can get anywhere he needs to. His moves will generally clear crowds out before they can hurt him too much. ====================================== = 4. Zhang Fei's Moveset [zhangmove] = ====================================== Legend: S = Square T = Triangle Jump = While Jumping Horse = While on a horse Taunt = R3 (Push the right analog stick in) Running = While Running (After taking about 6 or 7 steps) S: Fairly low strike on his left side to in front of him. SS: He pulls his arm around, striking the other side with slightly less range. SSS: A diagonol strike from upper left to down right. SSSS: A horizontal strike from right to left, hitting almost 180 degrees. SSSSS: Another horizontal attack, but from left to right. SSSSSS: He jumps and spins around with his spear, for a 360 degree strike. T: Zhang Fei reaches forward with his left hand to grab his enemy, and lifts them up in the air. He then thrusts them down and forward. He is invincible while performing this move. ST: He charges up, and swipes the bottom tip of his spear upwards into the enemy. SST: He swings his spear right and left while stepping forward, destroying the crowd he uses it on. After the move ends, he sends a small energy wave, hitting all enemies around him. SSST: A throw-like move. He thrusts his spear into the enemy, lifts them up and spins them around (Also hitting nearby enemies), followed by swinging his spear around, clearing everyone around him. SSSST: Knocks the enemy into the air with his spear, followed by jumping up to crush down on them. SSSSST: Steps on the tip of his spear while shoving it into the ground, causing a small earthquake around him. Probably one of his best two crowd clearing moves. Running S: Shoves forward, head first. Fairly good for opening an assault. Jump S: While in the air, he swings his spear hitting most of the enemies in front of him. Jump T: Spins in the air, and then lands on his spear, causing a slight earthquake around him. Horse S: Typical right/left swings on either side of the horse. Horse T: Charges up before swinging to the right/left of the horse. Taunt: Unlike other taunts, this one does actual damage. However, this taunt can be blocked. Horse Taunt: Oddly enough, it is similar to a normal taunt. All it does is break the enemy guard. Musou: Juggles the enemies upon his spear, then swings his spear in front of him to clear a crowd. True Musou: Same as his normal Musou, but carries fire element and launches several quick spear strikes at the end. Horse Musou: Fast and powerful swings on either side of the horse until his Musou runs out. ===================================== = 5. Zhang Fei's Costumes [zhangcos] = ====================================== Costume 1: His basic outfit. He wears a vest over his chest, with the sleeve cut off on the left arm, and down to the elbow on the other side. He wears a hat with a red hairband. He wears some colorful battle garbs around his waist, and a bottle (Of alcohol?) on his belt. Costume 2: A white-themed color variation of his first outfit. Costume 3: Similar to his first oufit. The sleeve is a bit shorter, and he is wearing more coverage on his chest. Costume 4: A white-themed color variation of his third outfit. Costume 5: Zhang Fei's original outfit from Dynasty Warriors 3. He wears different garbs, and both sides of his shirt go down a little on his arms. A bit of his chest is covered, too. Costume 6: A greyish-themed color variation of his fifth outfit. ============================================= = 7. Zhang Fei's Level 10 Weapon [lvl10wpn] = ============================================= NOTE: There are TWO methods to unlocking his Level 10 Weapon, though one requires disk swapping to do so. REQUIREMENTS: - You must have Zhang Fei's Level 9 Weapon. - You must be playing on HARD difficulty. WITH DISK SWAP (Dynasty Warriors 4 Method): Stage: Battle of Chang Ban Side: Shu Method: - Defeat Xiahou Dun.* - Defeat Xiahou Yuan.* - Defeat Xiahou En.* - Defeat Xiahou De.* - Get the yell event at Chang Ban Bridge. - Rescue Liu Chan while on a horse. * Order is not required. How I did it: - First thing I did was kill all of the Xiahou family, while making sure Liu Bei stays alive. - I lured Zhang He into following me onto Chang Ban bridge, triggering the event. * The event is triggered by having an Officer on the bridge with you. - After the notice about Liu Chan being in the castle, I rode over on my horse and opened the box. I also grabbed the 60 Second Musou while on the horse. WITHOUT DISK SWAP (Dynasty Warriors 4:XL Method): Stage: Legend of Zhang Fei Side: Zhang Fei Method: - Do not let more than 1 team of enemies pass through Chang Ban Bridge (-10 points). - Defeat all enemy Generals that come to Chang Ban Bridge. (100 Points) * Xiahou Dun, Xiahou Yuan, Yu Jin, Zhang He, Cao Ren, Li Dian, Xu Huang, Yue Jin, and Xu Chu. How I did it: * NOTE: I honestly can't say I have earned the level 10 weapon for Zhang Fei using DW4:XL. If anyone has, please send your strategy to my e-mail address, listed at the end of the guide. ============================================= = 8. Zhang Fei's Level 11 Weapon [lvl11wpn] = ============================================= * NOTE: Zhang Fei's level 11 weapon is only obtainable on Xtreme Legends. REQUIREMENTS: - You must have Zhang Fei's Level 10 Weapon. - You must be playing on EXPERT difficulty. Stage: Legend of Zhang Fei Side: Zhang Fei Method: - Do not let more than 1 team of enemies pass through Chang Ban Bridge (-10 points). - Defeat all enemy Genearls that come to Chang Ban Bridge. (100 points) * Xiahou Dun, Xiahou Yuan, Yu Jin, Zhang He, Cao Ren, Li Dian, Xu Huang, Yue Jin, and Xu Chu. - Defeat Cao Cao when he comes to the Chang Ban Bridge. How I did it: - A lot of Saving and Loading, simply put. The basic strategy is to stay around the bridge and wait for the officers to come to YOU. - As they all arrived at the bridge, I would save. Load the game, try and kill them with as much HP possible, then save again. Try to run towards enemies on the bridge, as they will often run back. * NOTE: Muni Shinobu suggested that you can "park" your horse sideways on the bridge to help stall enemies. It does help, but not forever. My equipment setup: SADDLE: Shadow Runner ORB : Vorpal ITEM1 : Tiger Amulet ITEM2 : Tortoise Amulet ITEM3 : Peacock Urn ITEM4 : Wind Scroll Reader suggestions: Ada the Spy: ""In both the FAQs, it says that you can only let one group of troops to go through the bridge, and you can still get the weapon. That's what happen to me: Only a little more than 1 minute remained, and Cao Cao was the only one left. I rushed to him, ignore the soldiers. As I was kicking his xxx, the message that said (forgot the exact sentence) troops have gone through the Chang Ban Bridge appeared 4-5 TIMES!!! I beat the stage, and I got the weapon. So, I think more than one group of troops can go through bridge, and you may still get the weapon. Don't ever give up even when you see that message appeas for more than one time (I was about to reset when that message appeared for multiple times...). My equipment: Shadow Vorpal Tiger Amulet Tortoise Amulet Peacock Urn (HP DOES HELP!!!) Wind Scroll" * NOTE: I did not try letting those extra soldiers across. Only one group made it across during my play, and I still got a perfect (100) S-Rank. Summary: You can let more than 1 troop make it across the bridge. ========================================== = 9. Zhang Fei's Legend Stage [zhangleg] = ========================================== The in-game text: "In 208 AD, Liu Bei, who had settled in the Jing province, was attacked from the north by Cao Cao's massive army. Lacking the resources to resist, Liu Bei was left with no choice but to flee. Liu Bei's march went slowly, as it was hampered by the thousands of peasants who had chosen to follow him. Finally, at Chang Ban, Cao Cao's forces caught up with Liu Bei and began their assault. With troops and peasants alike fleeing in terror, Zhang Fei requested to be given the rear guard. He alone now stood between Liu Bei and his doom. Not one enemy soldier may pass!" ============================================= = 10. Suggested Item Combinations [sugitem] = ============================================= LEVEL 1-10 WEAPON SETUPS: SADDLE: Shadow Runner ORB : Vorpal ITEM1 : Tiger Amulet ITEM2 : Tortoise Amulet ITEM3 : Peacock Urn ITEM4 : Wind Scroll A fairly basic setup. It allows you to have an Attack, Defense, HP, and range boost. For me, this is a setup that I always seem to use on my characters. The Shadow Runner's ability to never fall of a horse is extremely helpful thing, too. SADDLE: Shadow Runner ORB : Ice ITEM1 : Tiger Amulet ITEM2 : Dragon Amulet ITEM3 : Musou Power Scroll (Japanese name) ITEM4 : Secret Book of Godly Orbs (Japanese name) This setup is dedicated to abusing his 360 degree moves, and his Musou. I tried it before, and it's a fairly fun setup to use. Dragon Amulet helps his Musou max, so you can get another hit or two from the Musou Power Scroll. The main srategy is a short, simple move (Just SST, without the extra T hits) to freeze as much as you can, then plow into your enemies with your Musou. For those you don't freeze, Musou Power Scroll does it's job. LEVEL 11 WEAPON SETUPS: If anyone has any setups, please don't hesitate to e-mail me. The address is listed at the end of the guide. ============================================= = 11.
