Introduction ------------ The Ring Soul can be found in various locations throughout the game and engages in a continuous dialogue with Karin and then Yuri. This FAQ is to help pinpoint all the locations, give directions for finding the Ring Soul, and to detail the conversations in case you might miss one. The order in which you speak to the Ring Soul does not really matter too much. If you miss a conversation out the next Ring Soul you find will simply be the next conversation in order. You can go back and get one if you missed it, and in that case the conversation you hear will be different from the one listed here for that location. INTRODUCTION TO THE RING SOUL AND ATTACK BOOSTS <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> The Ring Soul is useful because each time it is found it will give Yuri an Attack Boost item. Added to the ring of any character, this item allows an extra hit area to be added to the ring. This, of course, means that more damage can be inflicted when using a normal attack as there are more chances for getting strike and critical attacks. It is especially useful for the characters whose default ring setting only has one attack. It is also useful for those characters who engage in battle quests: i.e. Blanca, Joachim and to a lesser extent, Kurando. Each character has a maximum number of attacks that can be on the ring. If you used all 16 Attack Boosts this list shows the maximum attacks each character could have. There are 8 characters and 16 Attack Boosts: 2 each. Character Default Attacks Maximum Attacks Yuri: 3 5 Geppetto: 1 3 Karin: 2 4 Blanca: 2 4 Joachim: 3 5 Lucia: 1 3 Anastasia: 1 3 Kurando 3 5 -------------------------- Planning the Attack Boosts -------------------------- 1. The first one I always give to Karin right away. No point giving it to Nicolai, and not much point in saving it as Karin could do with the extra attack. 2. The second one goes to Blanca. Blanca has the wolf bouts and so an extra attack is useful early on. 3. The third one could go to Gepetto to give him more than one attack, or to Yuri for four, or even another to Blanca to help in those wolf bouts. If you go with Blanca then you can start adding the Expand items to his ring as four is the maximum number of boosts he can receive. This could be a good way to go. However another strategy is to keep this one and use it on Joachim. 4. By this time you should consider increasing Yuri's attacks or, if you haven't done so already, adding the final one to Blanca's ring. 5. Time to add an Attack Boost to Yuri's ring or another to Joachim. 6. By the time you get the sixth attack boost, if you have been diligent in getting them all, you will have Lucia in your party and I like to add an attack to her ring at this stage. 7. From here on it becomes more a matter of which characters you like to use most. That is, if you intend to add all the possible boosts. You could continue to ensure that Joachim and Blanca have all their possible attacks and then add another to Lucia so give her three or Yuri to give him five. 8. This could go to Joachim as his final boost, and again that means being able to add the extra strike and hit items to his ring, or to Yuri or Karin. 9. Give this to either Karin or Yuri as they will be battling without the rest of the party. They can then both have the maximum of their attack boosts. 10. After this Ring Soul I like to have Yuri, Karin, Joachim and Blanca with their full complement of Attack Boosts. Then it depends on who you like to use. Maybe one each for Lucia and Anastasia or all two for one of them. Since Gepetto is not really effective as a physical attacker and because I like using Anatasia for her camera and Lucia for her cards and oils he tends to get left out by this stage in the game. It is your choice. 11. Same as 10. Whatever characters you prefer using. OR save it for the next addition to your party. 12. I save this one too so when I get Kurando in the party I can immediately boost his ring to 5 attacks and then add whatever Expands I need. Saves a lot of bother to get his ring to the max right away. 13. By this time all the major attackers should have their maximum Attack Boosts. The last two I add to Anastasia. This then leaves only Gepetto to get his last two attacks. 14. Either Anatasia's last one or Gepetto's second. 15. The last two for Gepetto or Anastasia or Lucia, depending on who you have left. 16. For whoever is left. ------------------------------------------------- The Advantages and Disadvantages of Attack Boosts ------------------------------------------------- (Re-drafted with some corrections and additions thanks to Aya Brea.) If you add one attack boost, for example, to Karin's ring when you get the first boost, she will have three attacks instead of two. You can also use the items Hit Area Expand and Strike Expand on her ring. If, later on you decide that you want to increase her attacks again to the maximum of four, all the added "Expand" items will be returned to your pool, and can be allocated again. When you add an extra attack to the ring the strength of the other attacks are weakened. If you imagine one attack to equal 100%, then 2 attacks would be 50% each, and four would be 25% each. In fact this is not quite the case, as the first attack on the ring is a more powerful attack than the second, and the second more powerful than the third, and so on. However, this does mean, that if you are having problems with getting all the hits, and miss the next attacks, you will end up doing less overall damage than if you had kept the ring, for example, with Geppetto, at one attack only. You do not have to increase the attacks to the maximum available. You could decide to leave Geppetto's ring at one attack only for the whole game. This means, of course, that he will only ever get one attack if you use him for an ordinary attack, but it also means that you have a better chance of getting a ring perfect score for his attacks if that is something that you want to achieve. Ring Perfects mean that you hit the Strike area for all attacks and for all characters that take part in the battle. A high Ring Perfect score is essential if you want to get a special item later in the game. However the more attacks on the ring, the harder it is to get a Ring Perfect score. There are other advantages to being accurate in using the ring and to finishing battles fast. And, of course, to making many consecutive hits. After every battle you get rewarded with experience, cash, and soul points, and may receive an item. The better you perform, the greater the rewards. ------------------------------------------ Attack Boosts and the Different Ring Types ------------------------------------------ There are four choices of Ring Types: the Normal Ring, the Practice Ring, the Technical Ring, and the Gamble Ring. Depending on your preference, the Attack Boosts may or may not be useful. 1. Normal Ring -------------- For the Normal Ring, if you miss a Hit Area this stops the ring from spinning and your attack will end at that point. A miss does not negate the whole attack. So, for example, if you had given Yuri his full quota of Attack Boosts, he would have 5 possible hit areas. If you only missed hitting the fourth one he would still be able to make three attacks. The normal ring has all the Strike Areas for each Hit Area, and if you successfully hit those you get a Ring Perfect. Your attacks also do more damage and may be critical attacks. 2. Practice Ring ---------------- You could also choose to use the Practice Ring which has no Strike Areas at all. However even if you miss a Hit Area the ring will continue to spin and you could make another attack with the next Hit Area if you hit it. With the maximum number of attacks in place this might do more damage although you would not get any critical hits without the Strike Areas. However it also means no Ring Perfects, and is perhaps only for beginners who do not feel confident in hitting the Strike areas. 3. Technical Ring ----------------- If you want to use the Technical Ring you have to hit every Hit Area or your whole attack is negated. For this ring, fewer attack boosts might be advisable, but if you are skilled at using the ring then the maximum number for the heavy hitters would be very effective. This ring is slightly smaller than the normal ring. 4. Gamble Ring -------------- The Gamble Ring has one area that must be hit, and again, if you miss the Hit Area your whole attack is negated. It does have a Strike Area but it is extremely small and hard to see, let alone hit. If you add two attack boosts to Yuri's ring, for example, although the Gamble Ring will not change in appearance, when the area is hit Yuri would then do 5 attacks. Add the Expand items to this ring and if you add a lot of them then the area will slightly wider and therefore slightly easier to hit. So hit and strike area expands DO make a difference on this ring, but they are also shrunk so small that you need maybe 10 or 20 of them to make any discernible difference. Many thanks to Aya Brea for these details on this ring. -------------------------------------- Hit Area Expand and Strike Area Expand -------------------------------------- Once you have added all the attack boosts that you want and can have for a particular ring, it is time to consider these additional items. They are useful because they help you to be more accurate in hitting every area. You can experiment with these, as if you add them to a ring and find that you want to change the settings, you can remove them and they will be returned to your pool of expand items so you can reassign them. (Thanks again to Aya Brea for pointing this out.) Each character's ring has a different layout and some are harder to use than others. First experiment with the ring in battle to see how easy or hard you find it to get every hit area, and then to get a ring perfect by hitting every strike area. Once you know how it flows, then consider adding the items that can extent the areas and help you get a better laid out ring. This is really a matter of personal preference. However here are my thoughts on this. Yuri's ring is intuitive to use and it does not need much boosting, however the last three areas could benefit from some additions and the fifth area might need some increase too, especially for getting that last strike. Gepetto's ring has a narrow third strike area. Blanca's third area is small and so this gets extra Hits and Strikes, and I add one Hit Area Expand to his last segment too. Karin's ring is fairly easy and intuitive. Joachim's full ring: the second and fourth areas are small and so I tend to add Hit Area Expands to these and Strike Area Expands to the final area. Lucia's third area is small and gets a Hit Expand. Her second is large but the Strike area is very narrow so this gets boosted. Anastasia's ring may need a boost to the third sector. Kurando's ring benefits from adding Hit and Strike Expands to his first area, and also the third. ---------------------------- Buying More Hit Area Expands ---------------------------- During Disc Two, after the Forest of the Wind location opens up and you meet up with Roger again, the Europe map becomes available once more and you can revisit past locations from Disc One. To do this is simple: just select Map of Japan, and then Move to Europe (L1 or R1) from the main menu and then whichever particular location you want. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CHANGE DISCS. You can then go to Paris, select "Cathedral" and revisit the Junk Emporium. After the tutorial you can use the Attack Boost under the heading "Hit Area No" to increase her attacks from two to three. Press triangle to go to the menu and then use the directional buttons to select "Ring Custom". Press X to select this and then again on the character. You can only add Ring boosts from this new screen. Also any Ring items will only be shown here and not in the Item Menu. (You can also add the Evasion Down 1 to Karin's Ring Effects.) If you do not, then a man will remain standing blocking the entrance and refuse to let you pass. Go up the stairs from the subway and then go down to your right and the hotel is on your left. Go in here and up the stairs. He is in the room up the stairs and to the far right. Speak to him to receive the key. ---------- Directions ---------- Go down into the subway from the Champs Elysees after speaking with Dr.Gaultier in the hotel. Now you have access into the tunnels that are down the screen from where you enter the subway. Go on and you find that a subway car is blocking the first passage that is to the right. That is the way you will go eventually. To the left of that are three tunnels. Go down the furthest left tunnel. There will be another junction. This time take the right hand track. Continue at the fork and go north where the path is halted by another subway car. The next Ring Soul is here. ------------ Conversation ------------ Ring Soul: I am the Ring Soul... It awaits at the corner to the south where you have to go, after getting off the lift to the first basement in the mines. To get to the lift the fastest way from the entrance to the mine: Go forwards to the save point and from here go straight on and then at the junction turn left. Follow the passageway until there is another junction with a track leading to your right. Ignore this and keep straight on. Then at the next T junction turn left and you will be at the lift. Take the lift down one floor (which is all it will do anyway), and walk forwards. You will find the Ring Soul in the corner where the passage turns to the left. The Ring Soul is on the right and Yuri and Karin on the left. ------------ Conversation ------------ Ring Soul: I am the Ring Soul... The will of the Judgment Ring, the administrator of all fate... This location is where you arrive after reaching the end of the Rhonnda Mines. ---------- Directions ---------- The First Visit --------------- The first time you arrive at the top of the path above Roger's house. Go down the path and directly ahead there is a large colourful structure with a smaller building to the right of it. The Ring Soul can be found between these two buildings. If you go inside his house before getting the Ring Soul, and then exit there will be a series of events and so to get the Ring Soul you will probably have to re-enter the location from the world map. If so, the directions are slightly different. Later Visit ----------- If you visit this location again you will arrive from the area below Roger's house. Go up the screen straight ahead to Roger's house. When the view changes to the faraway perspective go on a couple more steps and at the junction of his house and the structure behind it is another Ring Soul. ------------ Conversation ------------ Ring Soul: (!) You will automatically get Lucia as your guide to take you to the island. ---------- Directions ---------- From the boat go right and then up the steps all the way to the top and through the main door to the mansion. Once you are free to proceed, from the entrance hall of the mansion go up through the first door, and turn right and go up the stairs. From this room, go through the northern door and along the corridor. Then go right half way along the corridor and at the far right side of this room, next to a folding screen the Ring Soul will appear. If you need to return here you can access the Island from the world map and the directions are the same. ------------ Conversation ------------ Ring Soul: I am the Ring Soul... Neam Ruin *NR <>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<><>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<><>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<><>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<><>-<>-<>-<> ---------- Conditions ---------- Neam is first accessed in the game after Nikolai demands the return of the Emigre Manuscript. This event occurs after you have visited Florence and Manmaria Island and also completed the events at SG Italian Branch The Ruin is located in Wales and to the north of Roger's house at the top of the path. To get inside you must first get the rope ladder from the chest inside Roger's house. That is found to the left of the save point inside. ---------- Directions ---------- The Ring Soul is hard to get to, as everything in Neam is hard to get to ... *sighs*. You have to get from the first floor down to the third basement and then complete another another tricky block puzzle to reach a passage. Once here there are more puzzles involving coloured buttons presses and stairways. After reaching the final stairway press yellow, green, green and it will go up to a passage. Go through here and you are in a large open space. There is a save point at the top left corner and the Magimel Brothers have set up a shop. The Ring Soul can be revealed if you go to the bottom right hand corner of the area, diagonally opposite the save point. If you get the Ring Soul on this first visit, after the next floor down and the boss fight you will be taken out of Neam Ruins automatically so you do not have to find your way out again. From the Entrance ----------------- Although there is a map for these ruins posted on GameFAQs I was told that I should include directions here as well. So here is the fastest way to get to the Ring Soul in Neam starting from the entrance to the Ruins, if, for any reason you missed it the first time in Neam. I have not included the details of any treasure that can be found in here, although there are extras to be found on each floor. I would recommend the excellent map by noypi_gjd which is posted on GameFAQs and is, in fact, a work of art in its own right. I used this map to help plot my way through. Go inside and up the passage to the first save point. ---------------- The Puzzle Rooms ---------------- 1. Room One ----------- 1. Stand on the first blue block and wait until it stops moving. (It moves forwards) 2. Go right and follow the blocks until you reach another blue block. (It moves sideways) 3. Go left three blocks and take the next blue block. (It goes left) 4. Go up and right and take the blue block. (It goes up to the exit) 5. Step on the red block to go down. 2. Basement One --------------- 1. Move forwards go right to hit the switch and step on the right hand patterned yellow block. 2. The camera will move away from Yuri, and you can see the upper left hand switch. Go to this and use it. 3. Go back and step on the patterned blue block. When this stops go down and left and take the yellow block to the bottom left hand corner. 4. Press the switch and ride the blue patterned block back. 5. From here go right and take the blue patterned block up to the exit corner. 6. Step on the red block and go down. 3. Basement Two --------------- 1. Walk forwards. This is easy. Simply walk left along the blue shiny path. 2. Then go all the way right to the wall switch. Press this to change the colour and direction of the path. 3. Go up the pink path to the far end of the room. Then left along the pink path. 4. Press the wall switch. Go down the pink path. 5. Now go back to the first switch at the right of the room. Press it. 6. Go left to the end of the blocks and up the pink path to the exit. 7. Ride the red block down. 4. Basement Three ----------------- Following from the map the third floor has three levels to it. There are blocks that move up and down. 1. From where you arrive at level 2, move forwards and take the first blue block forwards. 2. Then go on the blue block to your left and ride down to the bottom level. 3. Hit the yellow switch. Go back up. 4. Move across the yellow tile and down the screen to the next blue block. Go down. 5. Now go all the way up to the left of the screen to find another yellow switch. Use this and return down the screen again. 6. Now you can go to the right where you catch a glimpse of a yellow block in the floor. 7. Go on the blue block just near this yellow floor tile. 8. Then go up past the large central pillar and right along to the far wall. Hit the yellow switch. 9. Go back so Yuri is in front of the large pillar and take the left hand blue block. This goes up to the top level. 10. Go forwards and step on the next blue block and you are at the exit to this room. Go all the way through. 5. The Stairs ------------- First set --------- 1. Press: blue, green, blue. 2. Go up the stairs and through the passageway. Second Set ---------- 1. Press: yellow, green, green. 2. Go through the passageway and you are in the large hall. 6. The Ring Soul ---------------- Go to your right as you enter and the Ring Soul is in the bottom left hand corner. You can save your game at the save point in the top left hand corner of the room. 7. Getting Out Again -------------------- If you need to get back out, it is easy. Go back down the stairs and take the block across and then the next down. The way is open to go back the way you came. The pink and blue room room you need to go up and hit the top button twice. Then follow the path across the room to the bottom right hand corner. The block room hit the switch near the door and ride the yellow block. Get the next yellow block and hit the switch where it stops at the bottom left hand corner. Then ride the blue block back and go up and left to get the yellow block. From here hit the switch at the top left corner of the room. Then get the closest blue block which takes you to the exit The last room: get the blue block forwards and then the block near the left wall. St Marguerite Island *STM <>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<><>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<><>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<><>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<><>-<>-<>-<> ---------- Conditions ---------- You have to have accessed Cannes in order to get to the island of St. Marguerite. This will occur in the game after completing the events in Neam Ruins. When you arrive go right and keep going all the way down two flights of steps until you reach the bottom. On the way pause to speak to "Tired Suzette" who is standing near one of the front flower beds. Go on down the second set of stairs. Here turn left and there is a bar where you can speak to Nelson, (he is opposite the entrance near the fireplace), who will give you the loan of his boat. He will also give you the Waterway Key which is essential to get inside the prison where you hope to find Roger Bacon at last. Once you have the key go left again and past the Magimel's shop and then down the screen to the jetty to find the boat. This will take you to the island. To re-visit you can simply select the Island from the Map screen. ---------- Directions ---------- There are two ways of getting this Ring Soul. The first is when you first go to St Marguerite and can get it easily enough after Blanca rescues the party. If you miss it the first time you can revisit the location, and you start from the entrance to the prison. Directions from the Save Point ------------------------------ From the save point at the jail cells in St. Marguerite go back through the room where Blanca fought Oscar and then forwards through the door. Then turn to the left as you face the screen, and go to the corner and then walk forwards and right until you are in the centre of the area. Then forwards again (Yuri is facing you) and you will have gone through another door. Then turn to your right facing the screen which is left for your characters. The Ring Soul is on the upper right hand corner of the area with all the doors and passages the Blanca had to get through. Directions from the Entrance ---------------------------- This is the fastest way to get to the Ring Soul if you miss it the first time. From the entrance go up the stairs and through the wooden door to the left. Then go through the right hand door in this room, then turn left and go down the corridor. Go through the barred door at the end of the corridor and turn right. Follow the corridor to the end until you get to the stairs and then go through the right hand wooden door. Go right and then up the screen and down the stairs. Then go straight on to the far metal door. There will be another interruption when you meet Sarah. Go on past the save point and down the passageway to a metal door. After another scene go inside the door and continue into the church for another scene. After this go through the metal door at the top right side of the church. This is to the right of the altar and situated in the corner. Go to the right side of this new room and the Ring Soul will appear in front of a pillar by the wall. After the events in Goreme Valley and the Mirror Castle the group return to
Petrograd automatically.  Ewan tells them that Prince Yusupove is waiting by
the bridge on the edge of the city.

From the entrance gate go right and up the road to the left of the Magimel's
shop.  On the next screen go up the road and then turn right.  Continue to the
end of the road and turn up to the bridge.  There will be another graveyard
scene.  After this go down the steps on the right and speak to the waiting
Yusupov.  He opens the gate to the Gallery.

First Visit

The first time you go in here there are switches to find to unlock doors.

From the save point go forwards and operate the switch on the left. Go on up
and at the wall turn left.

At the T junction go right and up.  Then take the first turning left, and find
another lever at the end of the passage.  Operate the switch and return to the
corridor, and then go up and you will be in a larger area.

Go right all the way to the wall, and then up past the cells, and right again a
few steps, and at the corner the Ring Soul will appear.


Later Visit

To revisit follow the same directions from the gate of the city only without
the interruptions of any scenes.  There will no longer be any switches to find
or gates to open inside the Gallery.

From the save point inside the entrance go forwards and straight ahead.  Turn
left at the wall then first right.  Then go up and ignore the first left
turning, and at the more open area go right.

Then at the wall go up past the cells, and right at the top to find the Ring
Soul in the corner.

If you miss this Ring Soul and continue with the events in Apoina Tower you
will not be able to return here for some time.  You can then just follow the

After a series of events you can control Yuri once more and go down the

From speaking to the "Mysterious Old Man" go out to the street, and turn left
past the save point.  Continue down the street going left to the next screen.
Here you will find the Magimel shop, and keep going left close to the pavement
to the corner of the side street.  Go too far and you will leave the location.
Just behind the lamp-post at the corner go a step up the side street and the
Ring Soul will appear.

If you need to find it later on, select Yokohama from the world map, and then
select Yokohama Streets.  Then go forwards and a little to your left to the
lamp at the corner of the side street. The Ring Soul is just behind this lamp.

the events on the Battleship Mikasa and regaining control of Yuri.  You cannot
find the Ring Soul on this first visit as most of the graveyard is not
accessible yet.  You can only get it after a long series of events is
completed, and after the "Capital" location and Hojo Research Lab opens up.
Then you finally gain control of Yuri again and can re-visit the cemetery.

You can also re-visit here after the events at the Lab.

Select Map of Japan using the circle button and then choose Yokohama, then
select Foreigner's Cemetery.  Simply walk down a little onto the grass and
forwards from the entrance to find the Ring Soul.

           And she never talks to me when she comes home.  Says she's tired.

           But she used to talk non-stop.  You just couldn't keep her quiet.  I
           don't know...

Yuri:      Pretty bad, huh?

Ring Soul: And I can't work when I'm feeling like this every day.  I think I'm
           gonna have to give up this job.

Yuri:      What?!  No!  You can't!  ho else could do this job?!

Ring Soul: Why does it matter?  It's not like you can't finish the game without
           me.

Getting Back to Europe
-----------------------
Once the Forest of the Wind location opens up and you meet up with Roger again,
then the Europe map becomes available once more and you can revisit past
locations from Disc One.  To do this is simple: just select Map of Japan, and
then Move to Europe (L1 or R1) from the main menu and then whichever particular
location you want.  YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CHANGE DISCS.

This option becomes available after completing the event in the Hojo Lab and
after finding all your party members once more in Nihonbashi.

You must first visit the Forest of Wind, a location listed under the Imperial
Capital in Japan.  Once the events of Purgatory are completed you will enter
Inugami Village automatically: it is located in the Forest of Wind.

go forwards up the path towards the tree that is between the two large houses.
There is a treasure chest and the Ring Soul is to the left of it.

Conditions
----------
This location opens up after a series of events that begin with Saki at Inugami
Village Waterfall, which is located down the path that goes right from the save
point.  Once you have control over Yuri again go upstairs in the house and
speak to Saki.  After more scenes you can leave the house and leave the village
and the location of the Immortal Mountain, Mount Fuji will open up from the
world map.

The Ring Soul is not too far from the entrance, if you want to get to it fast.
Once again I am indebted to noypi_gjd"s excellent map of the Immortal Mountain
as the basis for these directions.


The Fastest Way
---------------
1. From the entrance go all the way forwards past the save point, and continue
until you see a green/yellow alcove.  Turn left at this first junction.  Get
the red crystal from the chest at the end of the passage.  Now go back use the
red crystal in the green altar area.

2. You will be transported to a new location.  From here go up and past the
first green altar, and then left at the junction to find another chest with a
blue crystal.  You can now go back and save your game at the save point next to
the second green altar.

3. Use the blue crystal in the altar next to the save point.  To transport from
here step into the light and press X.

4. From this new location follow the passage down and to the small cave down
the screen.  Here you will find the Ring Soul.

5. From here you can either go back the way you came and exit the mountain, or
continue and turn up the screen to the next green altar, use the yellow crystal
and then go all the way north picking up treasure at the side passages if you
want, and up to the save point at the Hall of Flame.   Beyond this is the Boss
of this place.

           At first I thought I just needed to get the job done and go.  but
           then, we had some disagreements, we talked...
