Coincidentally, it's also one of the tracks available for download on Mastiff's official la Pucelle web site. On the site the track is referred to as "Monster" so until I find a better source, I think I can justly call it that. As for the track info, my experience providing info to FAQ writers tells me that after weeks of searching unsuccessfully, they best way to get the complete track listing very well may be to submit it incomplete. I'd take anything at point, even a scan of the back of the OST (If it even has a list on the back) from someone who can't make any sense out of it what-so-ever. (I, myself could probably not translate it in its entirety, but I could at least do some of it and try to get it in the hands of someone who could do a complete transliteration and/or translation.) +-----------+ |Section #02| Japanese Language Notes +-----------+ This guides is attempting something difficult. It is attempting to hold as true to the original Japanese language and meanings as possible, so that purists (such as myself) aren't pulling their hair out, while at the same time being accessible to those unfamiliar with the language. When combined they form a nice contrast of information that can be enjoyable to someone who is interested in these sorts of things. (If you don't think there are many than there must be many more than you realize.) Now for those unfamiliar with the Japanese language what follows is the quickest run down possible such that you will be able to understand what the heck I am talking about in the various translation notes. After all, we all know that one of the main plights of the human condition is the inability and/or unwillingness of the average person to open another browser page long enough to perform an Internet search. In Japanese there are three character sets. Similar how English has upper case and lower case, but different. Remember I am trying to be as brief as possible for someone who doesn't want to read up on this. If you want more information follow the links. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_language Hiragana: This is the basic character set. One might call it the "normal" set. A simplistic comparison between English lower case and Hiragana could be made. Generally each hiragana character could be seen as representing the equivalent of a consonant and vowel combinations in English, with 'n' being the exception. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiragana Katakana: This is derived from Hiragana. It looks similar but is usually more angular and often simpler. It cold be compared to upper case in English, however a comparison to italics would be more accurate. It is used for words imported from other languages, for onomatopoeia (sound effects), and often for names. Katakana is represented in this guide in capital letters. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katakana Kanji: Chinese characters adopted and adapted to represent concepts, generally have two pronunciations, the Japanese word that the Kanji has been adopted to represent, as well as the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese word tied to the character. Kanji are the most feared aspect of the Japanese language, as one must know around 2,000 of them to be considered literate. However Kanji is also very useful. The language is littered with homophones that can be the source of lots of confusion and amusement alike. When things are written in Kanji, though they would be pronounced the same the concepts are differentiated between. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanji Romaji: This is not Japanese at all. This is English letters representing the Japanese characters. There are two versions of romaji: Hepburn and kunrei-shiki. Hepburn focuses on trying to mimic the pronunciation (though it still fails in the l/r department immensely) while kunrei-shiki focuses on mimicking the actual characters and their usage in Japanese grammar. Kunrei-shiki is technically the 'official' romanization, however Hepburn is the one that is more widely used. I personally prefer kunrei-shiki, but unfortunately Hepburn is better suited to the readers of this guide much better; thus it is the choice for this guide. (Technically I am using modified Hepburn.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romaji Japanese Names: The names of Japanese people are traditionally given surname first, given name second. I have decided to keep with this practice and have converted names given in western order to the traditional order. However due to my imperfect familiarity with given names versus surnames, some errors might have been made. This is unintentional. If you catch a Japanese name that is 'backwards' please let me know, citing evidence in the process. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_name The L / R Dilemma: Japanese has neither L nor R. Rather what they have is something in the middle that L and R are translated as. This sound is romanized as R, however it is really both L and R at the same time. I have used R as the default romanization, however I use L in the few cases when it is supposed to be L. For example, I use Laharu (Laharl) instead of Raharu. IMO it's probably supposed to be Lahar, however Lahrl does sound more name-like. FYI a Lahar is a devastating mixture of water and volcanic ash. It pretty much results in a flash flood of quicksand. It's kind of cool looking. The first list is a localization: combining the track names from the credits of the US game with those already titled in English and then translations of the remaining tracks--which were altered to what I think Atlus or some other company would have called them if a domestic OST was released. Special attention to tracks 01-19 and 02-05. 01-19 was localized as such based on the English Language version of Etna (which is a different character entirely from the original, in my eyes). 02-05's name I initially localized as "Monster" which is a track downloadable from the la Pucelle web site. The song was originally in la Pucelle and then reused in Disgaea. However, that does not necessarily mean it is called by the same name on both soundtracks, and does not take into account the possibility that the name of the track as listed on the la Pucelle web site is the actual track name but a generalization of the song's use in la Pucelle. The new localization for 02-05 assumes that 'daa' is somehow related to the short-form of the Japanese copula verb, 'desu', or the English word 'the'. Though the words are not really equivalent, I think it would be localized the same way in both cases. http://www.lapucelletactics.com The second section is a direct translation from Japanese by Mari Yamagi. The third section is the romaji of the actual Japanese track names. This is as close as you can get to the "real" names of the tracks without actually naming them in Japanese. (Which is no longer so hard to do, as winXP is unicode based; though a word of warning: naming a file and or folder in Japanese will make it difficult to send the file to other people as well as burn to a CD.) A fourth list version of the track list in Japanese might be included in the future. At that point in time, I'd have to change this file to be JIS or unicode encoding, which might scare some people away from it. It also changes the background music. It does not effect the battle voices. If you're playing with English voices, you get to Hear Tsunami Bomb's The Invasion from Within during certain battles. I believe these battles are the final battle of chapter 5 as well as the battle with Baal. I have heard that battle with Prier also plays it, but I'm not so sure on that as it doesn't sound plausible. I'll have to actually try it and see. On the Neutral Side, The English Audio replaces the music in the Stellar Graveyard and in Dinero Palace with a new track that is not on the Japanese OST, and thus probably no in the Japanese game at all. This can be either a good thing or a bad thing depending on how much you like the original track. It would also be a bad thing for purists, however they already writhe in pain playing the game because they are forced to hear the non-original voices in battle no matter what language mode they choose. On the Negative Side, for some reason they decided to remove the Ending themes from the English audio and replace them with watered down Instrumental versions. Though it can be nice to have both the originals and karaoke versions in the game, the problem is those who play solely in the English audio seriously miss out. Maybe it was intended to force people to try out the Japanese audio, however those who would be willing to try it out would probably do so on their own. The end result is many players miss out on the music. I choose to go 'by ear' in the romaji. technically o is the proper way to pronounce wo, however in songs many times wo is pronounced wo for aesthetic reasons. It indicates the proceeding word is the direct object of the following. okasu: to commit; to perpetrate; to violate; to rape. Conjugated in past tense as okashita. mono: Person. mono can also mean tihng, but in this case the Kanji for person is the one use, so there is no mistake. domo: Refering to self humbly and plural. no: Indicates possession. With it's position at the very end of the line it is hard for me to tell whether or not the impurity belongs to the singers, or to the sins they comitted. The likely answer is both at once. kegare: uncleanliness; impurity; disgrace. kiyomeru: purify; cleanse; exorcise. koyoi: tonight; This Evening. dare: who. umare: birth; birth-place. kawaru: to change; to be transformed; to vary; to be revised; to be different; to move location. Good translation strives to maintain the original meaning as much as possible, while good localization strives to make the text flow naturally, to create the illusion that the language it is localized into is it's original language. By and Large, Localization is what sells the most copies. If you've gotten this far in this guide, than you're probably something of a purist like myself. For ages the loss of meaning aggravated me immensely. I obviously prefer translation over localization. However in time I have come to realize the value of the later as well. To reconcile this disparagement with myself, I have simply decided to distinguish between the two as entire different but equally meritous things. I just prefer translation. However I feel the best solution is to include both. Unfortunately because of coding reasons this would probably be next to impossible to do even if the translation team wanted to.The strings of text would be so out of synch to require completely different pointer locations and such. In other words not only would all the code for the window quantities and such need to be rewritten, it would have to be present twice along with all the text. Thus with video games the translation versus localization debate is laid to rest with localization pretty much always winning. But look at it this way: if you pride yourself in desiring the purity of the artists' intents, even if a perfect translation to English is done you still lose all the possible aesthetics that may have been purposely placed in the original in the original language. Thus not only do you need extensive translation notes. but you'll probably want a description of what the text looked like on screen as well as what Kanji were used and others that could have possibly be used. In short: If you want to see the original work of art your only hope is to learn Japanese and import. So why do I bother showing people what they are missing? To get them interested in another language and culture.
