SUMMON NIGHT 3 OPTIONAL CHARACTERS/SCENES FAQ by kern (chriskern99@gmail.com) v1.1 (9/9/05) This FAQ uses Shift-JIS encoding, so set your browser's view settings appropriately. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions about this game, or better yet, post a message on the Summon Night 3 board on GameFAQs. Version History: 1.0 (Nov 7, 2004) - Initial version. 1.1 (Sep 9, 2005) - Clarified some sections, added some additional information, and corrected a few errors. ------------------ TABLE OF CONTENTS ------------------ I. Introduction II. Karma III. Choices Walkthrough IV. Second Playthrough ------------------ I. INTRODUCTION ------------------ There are a number of optional characters and events in this game that are controlled by your dialogue choices. Unfortunately the "correct" choice is not always obvious even if you can read Japanese. This aim of this guide is to show you all the correct choices to make so that you can get all the characters and scenes that are possible to get in one playthrough. There are two events (recruiting Meimei and the Ishlar ending) that cannot be gotten on your first playthrough of the game -- you have to play a second game from a clear save. The wording of some of the choices differs slightly depending on whether you chose the male or female main character. If it's significant enough I'll list both versions, otherwise as long as the choice is close, it's the right one. ------------------ II. KARMA ------------------ A few of the optional characters are dependent on your "karma" level -- in addition, if your karma is too high after Chapter 12, you will fight one last battle and then get the "Karma Ending" (essentially a bad ending). Remember, high Karma is bad. Your Karma raises in three ways: 1. You use the main character's 抜剣 power (where they draw the sword and transform). Even if this happens as an automatic result of the character reaching 0 hp, it still raises your karma. You want to avoid this if at all possible -- at least one character will not join you if you draw the sword even once. (You do not gain karma when the game forces you to draw the sword for story purposes.) 2. When an ally dies, you gain some karma (including summoned monsters). This is true in both story battles and free battles. You don't gain a whole lot of karma for this, but it can still be enough to prevent certain events (for instance, the "Discovery of the Truth" series of events requires that less than 2 people have died by the end of chapter 2.) Remember that this includes even nameless characters like the two soldiers in the first battle. 3. Some choices during the game will raise your karma. Generally if you give an answer that is uncaring or unbefitting of your role as a teacher, your karma will go up. There is only one point in the game where you can lower your karma. In Chapter 12, during the LESSON choice, pick 集落のみんなの手伝いをしよう. You can't see what your karma is in-game, but if you finish a Free Battle and see a scene where your main character automatically transforms, that's a sign that your karma is high. ------------------ III. CHOICES WALKTHROUGH ------------------ This is a list of every significant choice in the game, divided by chapters, that will allow you to gain every optional character and scene (as mentioned before, two of them are not available in one playthrough.) Since your Karma level is also important, the most important choices related to your karma level are listed as well. Not every single choice in the game is on this list -- if a choice is not listed here, it either is insigificant, or has no long-term effect on the game (e.g. there are a few choices that only affect what order you get characters in, or which of several similar battles you fight.) Generally the correct option to choose is one that shows sympathy or care, one that doesn't show an urge to fight, or one that is not cowardly. If you're out to get everything, it's best to not let your karma raise at all. Never save your game when someone has died, and never use the main character's special power in battle. Also note that if you don't do the early steps correctly, the later choices or sub-events may not appear at all. So if you're determined to get everything, make sure you look at *all* the choices and information here. Finally, a few of the events require a certain "friendship rating" with other characters. To raise friendship ratings with people, watch events with them and choose them in the Night Conversations. To ensure that you get everything, always do all the optional scenes with the characters before you move on to event battles. The term "sub-event" means the EVENT marker with the yellow exclamation point. To make it easier to search for events related to a particular character, I've prefaced each entry with a capitalized word in brackets indicating what the purpose of that event or choice is. The words are: [AZLIER] - Recruit Azlier and Galeor [CUNNON] - Recruit Cunnon [ENDLESS HALL] - This is an optional 16-battle dungeon (pretty much the standard optional S-RPG dungeon -- the final battles are much tougher than any of the story battles and you get the most powerful items from here.) [EXTRA STORY] - This is a 5-battle side story featuring the characters from Summon Night 2 that you can play after beating the regular game. [KARMA] - This choice is related to your karma level. [MEIMEI] - Recruit Meimei (this cannot be done on your first playthrough, but some necessary steps must be done on the first playthrough.) [PHLAIZ] - Recruit Phlaiz [SUBARU] - Recruit Subaru [TRUTH] - This allows you to see the "Discovery of Truth" scene right before the ending of the game. ***NOTE***: If you are playing from a clear save, this method of seeing the event will NOT work. Look at section IV of the walkthrough to see how to get this event instead. [VAR-XE-LD] - Recruit VAR-Xe-LD ********* CHAPTER 1 ********* [AZLIER] 1. On the ship, after your student gets mad at you, you will be given a choice between going up on deck, and walking around the ship. Choose 船内をぶらつく (bum around the ship) and you will see a brief scene with the Imperial army. (If you are playing off a clear save, you can choose either option here.) [KARMA] 2. After the first battle against the pirates, your student will be in trouble. Make sure you choose それでも助ける! here or your karma will go up significantly. ********* CHAPTER 2 ********* [KARMA] 1. When the pirates offer to let you go on their ship, choose 提案を受け入れる (I accept your proposal). [TRUTH] 2. In the night conversation, choose ???. If your Karma is low enough (you can't have drawn the sword at all, and only one ally death is allowed) then you will get a scene where Aty can't sleep. ********* CHAPTER 3 ********* [KARMA] 1. During your conversation with Vijue (ビジュ), choose 認めたくない! (or 悲しいすぎる for Aty). ********* CHAPTER 4 ********* [KARMA] 1. When your student runs away from the meeting, choose 生徒を追いかける (follow your student). ********* CHAPTER 5 ********* [PHLAIZ] 1. Before the event battle for this chapter, go to the forest and do the sub-event at the まやかしの森. [SUBARU] 2. When Misumi asks you to become a teacher for the kids, choose わかりました. This is not necessary for recruiting Subaru, but it raises your friendship level with Misumi (and a high enough friendship level is necessary). 考えさせてください raises the friendship level with your student (the third choice raises karma; don't select that.) [KARMA] 3. When you talk to your student again later, pick そんなことはない. ********* CHAPTER 6 ********* [CUNNON] 1. Before the first event battle, talk to Cunnon at the Repair Center. Choose うれしかったからよ. This is the first step in recruiting Cunnon. [KARMA] 2. When you are asked to draw your sword by the guardian, choose 抜剣をしない. ********* CHAPTER 7 ********* [CUNNON] 1. Before the event battle, talk to Cunnon at the Repair Center and then do the sub-event at the mine. [KARMA] 2. Before the battle with Azlier, choose そんなことはない! followed by あきらめない!. ********* CHAPTER 8 ********* [VAR-XE-LD] 1. Before the event battle, go to the スクラップ場(scrapyard) in the machine city and see the event with VAR-Xe-LD(ヴァルゼルド). This is the first step in recruiting him. [CUNNON] 2. Also before the event battle, go speak with Cunnon at the Repair Center and choose either そんなことはない! or 本当にそう思うの? This is another step in recruiting her. [SUBARU] 3. Finally, before the event battle, talk to Subaru and choose そうかな?. This is the first step in recruiting him. [AZLIER] 4. Once you choose the event, Azlier will confront you and you can choose to let them pass or not. Choose 道をゆずる. This is the next step in recruiting Azlier and Galeor. [SUBARU] 5. To recruit Subaru, your friendship level with Misumi has to be at a certain level. I'm not sure of the exact values involved here, but you might want to pick Misumi for the Night Conversation just to be safe. ********* CHAPTER 9 ********* [PHLAIZ] 1. At the beginning of this chapter, you get to choose who to spend your rest day with. First, go to Phlaize at the forest and talk to him, and choose そうじゃない! (違うんです! with Aty). MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS BEFORE YOU TALK TO ANYONE ELSE!! If you talk to other people, pick やめておく or you will not be able to do this event. [SUBARU] 2. You might want to choose Misumi to spend the day with to make sure her friendship level will be high enough to recruit Subaru. [MEIMEI] 3. At Meimei's shop, play the 運命の輪(Wheel of Fortune) until you win the special prize (the red segment). You will get Meimei as a temporary character in the next battle (this is also the first step to getting her permanently, although it can't be done on your first playthrough.) [CUNNON] 4. Make sure that both your main character and Aldyria are at level 14 before you finish the chapter. Once you do, if you have done the three previous Cunnon events, then you will be taken to a sub-scenario. ********** CHAPTER 10 ********** [VAR-XE-LD] 1. Before the first event battle, go to the scrap heap and meet VAR-Xe-LD there (the same place you met him the first time); this is the second step to getting him on your team. [CUNNON] 2. Talk to Cunnon at the Repair Center to have her join your team (assuming you completed all the previous requirements). [SUBARU] 3. Also before the first battle make sure that you have successfully completed the "Lotus Jump" minigame in less than 28 seconds at least once. This is necessary to get Subaru on your team. [SUBARU] 4. During the Night Conversation, it's probably best to pick Misumi. After the Night Conversation, you will be taken to a sub-scenario if you did the previous Subaru event, completed the Lotus Jump in less than 28 seconds, and if your friendship level with Misumi is high enough. ********** CHAPTER 11 ********** [PHLAIZ] 1. After the Night Conversation, if you did the three Phlaiz events and your Karma is low enough, you will go to a sub-scenario and then Phlaiz will join you. (Phlaiz requires a very low karma -- even one use of the Sword ability is enough to prevent him from joining you.) ********** CHAPTER 12 ********** [KARMA] 1. During the LESSON, if you pick 集落のみんなの手伝いをしよう, your Karma will go down. This is the only opportunity in the game to lower your karma, so use it if you need to. [TRUTH] 2. Before the first event battle, go to the はじまりの浜辺. If you did the first "Discovery of Truth" event and your Karma is low enough, you will get the second event necessary. Note that you cannot do this if you are playing from a clear save -- there is a separate way for getting the "Discovery of Truth" on a second playthrough. [ENDLESS HALL] 3. If your Karma is low enough, you can access the optional dungeon 無限界廊 here by going to Meimei's shop and choosing the 4th option. The dungeon will appear in Chapter 16 if you can't get it here. [VAR-XE-LD] 4. Also before the first event battle, go to the Scrapyard and find VAR-Xe-LD. If you did the previous two events related to him, you'll fight an optional battle and then he'll join your team. [AZLIER] 5. Finally, make sure that the main character's level is 21 or higher by the end of the chapter. (If you are going for Brave Clears it can only be 20 for the first event battle; just raise him/her one level after that and you're fine.) [KARMA] 6. Before the Night Conversation, if your Karma is high enough, you will go to the Karma Route, fight one more (solo) battle, and then receive the Karma Ending. It's worth watching once, so you may want to keep a separate save game here. If you ever want to see the Karma Ending, just repeatedly go into a Free Battle, use the main character's special transformation ability, then retreat. During this process you will see three scenes after the Free Battles. (At least one Japanese site suggests that all three scenes must be seen in Chapter 11 at the latest for the Karma Ending to activate.) [AZLIER] 7. Choose ??? during the Night Conversation. If you did the previous Azlier events, have a low enough Karma, and your main character's level is 21 or higher, you'll enter a sub-scenario after which Azlier and Galeor will both join. ********** CHAPTER 13 ********** [EXTRA STORY] 1. In the first event battle, make sure that you defeat Hazel (ヘイゼル) before you finish the battle. This is the first step to unlocking the 番外編 (extra story). ********** CHAPTER 14 ********** Nothing. ********** CHAPTER 15 ********** [EXTRA STORY] 1. Defeat Hazel in the event battle before you finish it. If your karma is low enough, after the main post-battle sequence you should see a scene where the party finds Hazel with her leg broken and takes her back to the hospital. Then, after the night conversation, there will be a second scene in the hospital with Hazel. [Note: Defeating Hazel is not the easiest task. Be careful of taking your party down the right side of the map; if anyone with lower than a 3 vertical move goes down there, they will be unable to make it back to the main part of the map. Also, once you get there you will be attacked by four gunners and Hazel all at once. A good way to accomplish this is to clear the main stairway of enemies and then have Var-XE-LD stand by himself with counter-attack set, and shoot one of the enemies. He should be able to eliminate a few of the gunmen before they can even reach the stairs.] [TRUTH] 2. This Night Conversation determines whose ending you will see. If you want to see the "Discovery of Truth" scene, you must pick either your student or the "main guardian" (this is whoever you chose to talk to after the first event battle in Chapter 3). If your friendship level is high enough, one of them may be chosen automatically -- if this happens you can still get the Truth scene. ********** CHAPTER 16 ********** Nothing. From here until the end of the game, you can use the main character's 抜剣 (sword drawing) power without gaining any karma. ************* FINAL CHAPTER ************* [MEIMEI] 1. If you won the special prize back in Chapter 9, you can go to Meimei's shop after you view the first red event scene, and you'll receive the "Meimei's Letter" item. This will allow you recruit Meimei on your next playthrough (if you load this clear save). [EXTRA STORY] 2. If you completed all the previous Extra Story events, visit Meimei's shop and you'll get a scene with Hazel (at the same time as the above scene). After you finish the game, an entry called ひみつメモ(secret memo) will be put in your Gallery, which will show you a button combination (R2 + L2 + up + triangle + start). When you input this at the "PRESS START" opening screen after beating the game once, you can play the extra story. [TRUTH] 3. If you completed all the necessary steps, you will see the "Truth" scene immediately before the closing credits (it involves the main character speaking with the ghost Hainel). ------------------ IV. SECOND PLAYTHROUGH ------------------ Loading a clear save allows you play the game again with some things carrying over from your previous save (summoned monsters, mainly). On the second save a few things are different and there is a different ending that you cannot get on your first playthrough. (Although the term "second playthrough" is used, these events work on any playthrough beyond that as well. "First playthrough" should also be read to mean "the preceeding playthrough".) All of these assume a "real" playthrough -- if you got the Karma Ending you can't do any of this. Four things are available on the second playthrough: 1. Ishlar Ending 2. Recruit Meimei 3. Endless Hall 4. Discovery of Truth event ***** 1. ISHLAR ENDING ***** There are five (or perhaps eight) steps to seeing this ending. Keep your karma as low as possible. 1 - In Chapter 1, choose 甲板に出てみる in the first choice on the ship. Note that this will still enable you to get Azlier and Galeor. *2 - In Chapter 2, choose ??? for the Night Conversation. 3 - In Chapter 6, choose ??? for the Night Conversation. 4 - In Chapter 7, choose ??? for the Night Conversation. 5 - In Chapter 10, choose ??? for the Night Conversation. *6 - In Chapter 11, choose ??? for the Night Conversation. *7 - In Chapter 16, during the conversation with Azlier, choose 本当にそうなのかな? 8 - In Chapter 16, after the event battle, choose 君の本当の望みを知りたい!. (Steps 2, 6, and 7 are not mentioned in any of the three hint guides for the game that I have, but one usually reliable Japanese site lists them as requirements. I haven't verified whether or not you absolutely need to do them, but it isn't going to hurt you at all, so you might as well.) As mentioned previously, if your friendship level with the student or the "main guardian" is high enough, you will have no choice of night conversations in Chapter 15 and you will automatically get the ending for that character. If this happens you *cannot* see the Ishlar ending. But this is easily avoided simply but not choosing either your student or the main guardian in any night conversations. Also note that in addition to the ending, there is a lot of new dialogue in Chapter 16 and in the final chapter, so if you can read Japanese and you're skipping scenes on your second playthrough, be careful in this section. ***** 2. RECRUITING MEIMEI ***** If you got Meimei's letter in your first playthrough, Meimei will join your party in Chapter 4. ***** 3. ENDLESS HALL ***** This is the same as in your first playthrough except that on your second playthrough it will appear on Chapter 6 (regardless of your Karma level). If you "unlocked" the choice of floors (by beating the sets of 5 floors) on your first playthrough, they will remain open on your second. This allows you to jump to the lower levels immediately, if you want. ***** 4. DISCOVERY OF TRUTH ***** This is the same as in your first playthrough, but the conditions are different. Note that the method of getting this scene discussed in part III will *NOT* work from a clear save. There are only two steps: 1 - In Chapter 2, choose ??? in the Night Conversation. 2 - In Chapter 11, choose ??? in the Night Conversation. You will see the Discovery of Truth scene before the ending.
