I will attempt to cover most of the game in here. If you'd like to contact me about this FAQ, please follow the instructions in the Contact Me section. Failure to do so will probably lead to deletion of the email (or me not getting it). 2. Version History Version 1.0 Written 9/1/03 Most information covered, some gaps are still present Version 1.1 Written 9/5/03 Added in Gallery unlock 35. Added some more songs to the Song Info section. Added the Expert Courses section, though still incomplete. Version 1.2 Written 3/10/04 Added more songs and Expert Courses. Added the Drill Mode information. Still incomplete, however. Changed the format of the Expert Course section slightly. Added a FAQ section. 3. How to Play IIDX is said to have the steepest learning curve in the Bemani series. The basic gameplay involves hitting keys on the IIDX controller and turning a turntable. However, as the songs get harder, the note sequences get varied quite well. 4. Arcade Mode This is probably where you'll spend most of your time while playing IIDX 6th Style. This is the basic 3 stage arcade system. The number of stages cannot be changed. When you select Arcade Mode, you have 5 or 6 options to choose from (depending on your unlock status): 7 Key: This is the normal mode. If you start in this mode, you can freely change between Light7, 7Key and Another. 7 Key is the intermediate mode of IIDX. This is also the default selection. Light7: This is the novice mode in IIDX. All key patterns have been simplified somewhat. If you select this, you will be locked in it until your game ends. Expert: Like the name says, this is an expert mode. You will play a course consisting of 5 songs (you can choose the course, and the key mode). Press Start once to see the play options (and change them if you like), then press it again to see the stage list. The difficulty meter here represents the total difficulty of the 5 songs. Ranking: Play a ranking course. There are 4 courses, whose songs are determined by their order on the Player's Best lineup (how often they've been played). Reset the list by pressing Start and choosing the Yes option when prompted. Original Expert: This is the unlockable item. You can play a course that you've created here. 5 Key: Same as 7 Key mode, except the right two keys aren't used. However there is no Light 5 or Another here. 5. Beginner Mode This is the mode where you should start at if you're just learning IIDX. All of the songs have been simplified to 1-3 star ratings. All 69 songs are displayed, but if you've still got some song unlocking to do, the locked songs are displayed as ?s and are on top of the difficulty selection. The little bar on the side indicates how well you've done on the song. The possible colors are: Blank: Haven't played it yet. Red: Failed the song. Yellow: Passed the song. Green: Full comboed (nothing worse than Good) the song. Blue: Gotten all Greats or better on the song. The color guide is displayed to the right, and the color bar for the current song will be highlighted in it. It also shows how many songs are in each category. 6. Music Clip Mode This mode is essentially the same as Arcade Mode, except records are not kept, and the movie is shown in the background. You can choose Music Select, Expert Course Select or Original Expert Course Select (if unlocked). Press Select while on the screen to toggle between Play and Auto Play. If Auto Play is on, the scrolling note area will not appear, thus letting you watch the video in fullscreen. 7. Song List and Information Note that Anothers are not officially rated. Some Another songs are only available in 1P mode. This section is incomplete. If Light 7 and/or 7 Key doesn't have a rating listed here, it means I can't remember it at this writing. I will fill the blanks in for the next version. 19, November Artist: good-cool Light 7: 5 Stars, 560 notes 7 Key: 6 stars, 733 notes Another: 910 notes 20, November Artist: dj nagureo Light 7: 4 stars, 410 notes 7 Key: 7 stars, 698 notes Another: 629 notes A New Morning Artist: Yukihiro Fukutomi License: Cutting Edge Light 7: 4 stars, 307 notes 7 Key: 5 stars, 523 notes Another: 681 notes (not available in Versus) Absolute Artist: dj TAKA Light 7: 5 stars, 682 notes 7 Key: 7 stars, 935 notes No Another. However, the lifebar's adjustments aren't as noticeable when you get good hits or bad hits. Each course consists of 5 songs (original courses can have up to 10 songs defined for them). There are 31 courses total, 25 selectable at any one time once they're all unlocked. There's also a Random option. Course 13 is a special course, in it are the 7 daily courses. The game determines which day it is in Japan, based on your PS2's clock settings and timezone, and will give you the appropriate course for that day. Otherwise it is as normal. Courses can be played on Light 7, 7 Keys or Another. If you select Another on a course that contains songs that lack Another sets, when those songs are reached you will play their 7 Key versions. In some courses, one song will be set to a level above what you set the course to. I will indicate those as I see them. Also, if you clear a song in this mode that is not marked as clear in your records, it's status will not change. If you full combo a song in this mode, this will be recorded in your records (not sure if it will change a Play status to a Clear status, however, because it IS possible to fail songs even when you FC them). EX scores for each song are updated if you beat your original scores. Expert Mode is a good source of Gallery screens, though I believe all of the ones you can get here can also be obtained in Hard Mode (though it's a LOT more risky to get them there, especially the low lifebar ones). In Expert Mode, the Start button does two things. First it will bring up your play options. Pressing it a second time shows the stage list. If you are in Music Clip Mode on Autoplay, the play options will not show. If you have Random selected, the Stage List will not show (and will disappear if you select Random with it showing). The total number of stars displays the total difficulty of the songs in the course. For those of you who can understand Japanese, the manual has some information on the first 9 Expert Courses (I can't read Japanese, so I cannot provide that information). Special note on the Random course: If you select it, you can choose between 5, 10 or 15 stages. There is no high score list maintained for this course (obviously). These courses are listed with their difficulties when 7 Key is the chosen overall difficulty. Songs marked [a] will be boosted by one difficulty level, unless you have already chosen Another. The difficulties of some courses are unknown at this time (either fully or partially). Course Listing (Incomplete): 1. It's a special mode designed to hone your skills at various patterns and speeds in IIDX. There are 3 Courses, the first two are open at the start. The third course is a special course, and thus has special requirements for each step in it (similar to the Challenge Mode found in DDR 4th Mix and Extra Mix). However, like it's DDR Challenge Mode partner, the directions are in Japanese. For the first two courses, the goal for each pattern is simple: Score 80% or above on your lifebar. Success marks this step as completed, with the color varying on your performance (red for just passing, orange for full combo, yellow for all Greats/Just Greats). Failure will mark this step with a white hexagon. You are not required to pass all of the marks in each step before you move onto the next one, as they are pretty loosely related. The percentage indicator for each course is for how much of the course you've cleared. Each step has a maximum EX score, which functions the same way as normal scoring does (see Scoring section for details). The last step in the course only has one sequence, in which you play the entire song they provide you. Note that you cannot select ANY options here, as they will be set for you. 10. Unlocks Unlocking songs: Songs are unlocked gradually as you play. There are 6 song unlockables. They are: Hyper Boundary Gate, Jelly Kiss, Outer Limits, The Strong Jaeger, Stick Around, dissolve, and Changes. Unlocked songs are displayed in a bright orange color. Unlocking Expert Courses: Expert Courses are unlocked as you play others in Expert Mode. The special daily course (#13) varies depending on what day it currently is in Japan (the game will adjust to figure this out). Unlocking the Original Expert Course setting: Play all of the songs on any mode (I recommend Beginner) to unlock this. It will appear on your menu (to configure the courses) and in Arcade Mode and Music Clip Mode. Unlocking Tatsujin Movies: Each movie appears after certain conditions are met. The only ones I know for sure are: 14: Gain this by playing all of the songs in any mode. You get to watch AGOP play G2 Another. 15: Gain this by completing all of the songs in any mode, except for Beginner. You get to watch Lisu play V Another. Unlocking Gallery Pictures: Each Gallery picture has a method to unlock it. These all appear as results screens from time to time. Note that some randomly show up. Beginner mode will not unlock any gallery pictures. If the entry says Random picture, it's actually the same picture for that slot, but you don't have a 100% chance of getting it even if you fulfill the requirements of doing so. The complete unlock list for the Gallery is as follows (thanks goes to Crystal for letting me use her information on this): 1. Playing in Normal mode, this one will randomly show up when you clear a song. 1/24 odds 2. Clear a song with your groove gauge between 90% and 99%. 3. Clear a song with a full groove gauge. 4. Clear Theme of Denjin J. 5. Clear Take it Easy. 6. Obtain an AA. 7. Obtain an A. 8. Obtain an AAA. 9. Random picture: Clear and song on Normal mode with a full groove gauge. 1/22 odds. 10-12. Random picture. Same as 27, but 1/12 odds of a different picture. 11. Scoring System Flashing Greats are worth more than Greats. Each song is worth 200,000 points maximum. You can gain the following bonuses: Border Bonus: Finish a song with your groove gauge at 80% in normal mode for a bonus of 5730. Great Bonus: Finish a song with all Greats or better (Poors resulting from extra note hits don't count) for a bonus of 3110. Flashing Great Bonus: Finish a song with all flashing Greats or better (Poors resulting from extra note hits are excluded) for a bonus of 4620. Great+Border Bonus: Achieve both the Great and Border bonus for 11900 points. Note that this isn't a straight addition of the two above bonuses. Flashing Great+Border Bonus: Achieve both the Flashing Great and Border bonuses (very difficult) for 19900 points. EX Score: This is used to determine your DJ level, and for records. Flashing Greats are worth two points, Greats are worth 1, all other judgements are worth 0. Grading System: The IIDX grading system is standard to the series, for the styles that give you grades. While 6th Style will display your grade automatically, you can use this information to figure out how many more EX points you need to get a higher grade, or the grade you would have gotten on an older style that doesn't use grades (such as 3rd Style). 12. Cleaning Your Controller This section only applies to the official Konami IIDX controller. The official IIDX controller is designed to be taken apart. Separate the main key unit from the controller by pressing the eject button underneath the controller and pulling the key unit away. Turn the unit upside down and remove the 6 screws. They are all the same, so don't worry about mixing them up. Remove the underside of the controller, then take out the two screws connecting the PCB to the buttons. They are differently colored from the 6 you removed earlier. Take the PCB out carefully (note that it only goes on in one direction). Make sure the unit is still upside down or the main keys will go flying. Remove the rubber from each of the keys (the rubber attached to the Start and Select buttons is a little different, and cannot be put on the main keys). Remove the keys themselves, and clean around the sides. Afterwards, put the keys back in, attach the rubber (make sure the keys all sink into their slots). Attach the PCB (if you're putting it on incorrectly, you won't be able to see all 6 screw attachment holes. If this is the case, reverse it), then use the two silver colored screws to screw it down. Place the black bottom onto the unit (make sure you can see the 6 screw holes, reverse it if you can't) and then reattach it. Slide it back into the main unit. 13. Additional Frequently Asked Questions This section is for information that doesn't really fit in any other section. Q: The game won't let me select 7 Keys, or play any of the extra modes! A: The game thinks you have a 5 Key controller. This option is set when you start the game without system data available. If you initially set your controller to Original 5 Keys, you will need to go into the options and set it to Original 7 Keys (only if you have a 7 Key IIDX controller). If you do not have a 7 Key IIDX controller, you can set the option to DualShock 2, and use your PS2 controller to play the extra modes. Note that Player 1 and Player 2 have this option set individually (Player 1 can be set to Original 7 Keys, and Player 2 can be set to DualShock 2, for example). Q: I'm left handed. Is there any way to switch the controller around so I can hit the keys with my left hand and use the scratch with my right? A: Sure, at least with a Konami IIDX controller. The key unit is separable from the main unit. Underneath the controller, find a button, and push it to be able to remove the key unit. Take the unit out, remove the protective cover that's on the right side of the unit, and move it to the connector on the left side. Flip the key unit around so that the newly opened connector will slide into the main unit's connector. After you've done this, you will be able to play with the controller switched around from the normal configuration (it will be aligned to Player 2's side, so you might want to use the Player 2 slot). 14.
