Air Ranger Rescue Helicopter (PS2) - Coin Guide By BarbaricAvatar. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Missions are marked as they are in the game: Mission 1-1 Mission 1-2 Mission 2-1 Mission 2-2 Mission 3-1 Mission 3-2 Mission 4-1 Mission 4-2 Use your search function if you're looking for one mission in particular. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Instructions for all cities: You do not need to complete the missions or even survive to log successful coin pickups. Once you've picked up the coins you require, you can crash for a fast level exit and keep the coins, just remember to save the game. This FAQ is for collecting all coins in one run on each mission. Generally it's a good idea to complete the mission first before attempting to find the coins so that you have a rough idea of where everything is on the map and where I'm sending you. There's no compass in this game, so directions are based on what you can see from where you currently are. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 1: San Fernando City Mission 1-1: C1 - Take off and immediately head in the direction of the waypoint arrow. As soon as you reach the wide road with the trees lining it, straighten up to follow it. Switch to 1st person view (triangle button) as it'll make seeing this coin easier. Slow down approaching the first left turn on this road and you'll see a car appear from this junction and turn onto the main road you're currently above. It's dragging the coin behind it, descend and pick it up. You will have to chase the car through the city if you don't manage to get it straight away. C2 - If you didn't have to chase the car far then head toward the accident waypoint. Ignore it for the moment and continue heading in the direction that would be left of your mission starting point. You'll see a tall island with some trees in the centre and a lower area with a lighthouse (if you're close enough). The coin is above the lighthouse. C3 - Turn back toward the waypoint and enter the city via the wide road that leads to the accident. Upon reaching the accident, look to the top left corner of the intersection. There's a green oblong-shaped building between two blue skyscrapers. The coin is below a bridge that connects these skyscrapers. C4 - If you want to change the waypoint to make path-finding easier from here you can go pick up the accident victim to change the waypoint to the hospital. If you know the level pretty well already then this isn't necessary. Turn towards the hospital and head out of the city. Make for the bridge on the right (the one integral to mission 2). The coin is under the bridge between the supports on the hospital end of the bridge. C5 - Head to the hospital. Upon reaching the landing pad, descend to street level and look underneath the hospital. You'll see the coin in an underpass. It's closer to the front than the back, but I found it easier flying in from the back. Remember it doesn't matter if you crash after picking it up. \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Mission 1-2: C1 - Take off and immediately head towards the lighthouse island where you found C2 in mission 1. You can just see it in the haze. As you get closer to the island, you'll see a small town beyond it to the left with a big black rectangular building, now head for this town. When you reach it, you'll note a road going off to the left. Follow this road until you reach a crossroads at another small town. Go straight over this crossroad and just off to the right you'll see a single tall fir tree in the middle of some identical grey houses. The coin is above this tree. C2 - Go back along the road you just flew down to the first town with the black rectangular building. Fly to this particular building and then turn left and fly over the hill behind it. On the other side of the hill, slow to a hover and adjust your view point upward (D-pad) so that you can look down to the hillside. Rotate to your right and you should see a single house in amongst some trees in a dip. The coin is amongst the trees just to the left of the house. C3 - Follow the waypoint marker to the main city. There's one building taller than all the others, it's pretty much in the centre from where you're approaching. The coin is on the roof of this tallest building. C4 - Fly now toward the bridge waypoint. Before you get there, adjust your trajectory so that you fly onto the bridge over the road as if you were driving. The coin is found in the upper diamond of the first vertical wire support. There's plenty of room if you fly through dead-centre. Note: If you want more time to get the 5th coin in one run then while you're here in the vicinity of the accident, rescue the tanker. Otherwise the mission will automatically fail when the timer gets to 2mins left. C5 - Fly over to the town on the other side of the bridge and turn left. You'll see two ships parked to your left and a single ship ahead of you in the water. Fly directly over this single ship aiming for a patch of trees in front of you. In amongst this patch of trees you'll see a Helipad next to a building. The coin is on this Helipad. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 2: White Cliff Mission 2-1: Note: Take your time with these coins as one of them only appears after 7 minutes have passed. You'll need Bob extended on the winch for a couple of these coins, though i recommend using him for all but one of them as it puts the helicopter in less danger. You can only activate the winch once you've reached the sinking ship, so the order of collection may seem a bit odd at first. C1 - Head to the waypoint where the ship is sinking. When you reach it look for the three people at the front: McGuinn, Janice and Granny-Lou. Granny-Lou is standing above what looks like an empty swimming pool, the coin is in here. Lower the winch and Bob will pick up the coin. You need Bob extended from now on. If you accidentally rescue someone then extend the winch again. C2 - Slowly move forward after collecting C1 and rotate a little to the right, you should see a small red boat in the water. The next coin is above this. C3 - Turn around until you can see the other ship (the floating one). Fly over to this and look down to the stern (rear) of it. The coin is on a flat platform here. You pick up damage trying to land on this vessel which is why it's best to use Bob. C4 - Now head back toward the land where you started the mission. This is the only coin where using Bob is mandatory. You need to locate the airfield where you started; there are two ways of doing this: From a distance you should see a small dark triangle on the cliff at sea-level, fly directly toward this and upon reaching the land turn a little to the left and you'll see the Heliport right there. If you can't see this triangle or find this instruction difficult to follow then instead aim for the furthest right point of the land. As you get closer you should just make out some trees and then a lighthouse. Upon reaching the lighthouse, turn left and follow the only road. Make a left turn at the first junction and you'll see the Heliport in front of you. The coin is found between the control tower and the blue building beside it. You'll likely bash Bob around getting him into this small gap but it's the only way you can pick the coin up. C5 - Go back to the sinking ship. If you've been quick up to this point then you'll have more than 12 minutes left on the clock, so you may as well rescue and drop off the first 4 survivors, or amuse yourself flying around until the last coin becomes available. When the timer hits 8mins remaining, the stern of the sinking ship will raise and reveal the 5th coin there beside the propellers. You don't need Bob for this one as there's enough space to fly your helicopter in for it. \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Mission 2-2: Note: These are trickier than usual because of the bad weather and lack of visible landmarks in this mission. C1 - Take off and head for the waypoint. Ascend to an altitude of around 650. You should see the coin as a white dot in the air above the boat as you get within 1km. C2 - Descend toward the boat and when prompted, lower Bob on the Winch but don't pick up the survivor. You don't need him for the first coins, but you will need him later. Turn around and you should just be able to still make out the coast of where you started. Head toward the right corner of the coast and look for the lighthouse. The coin is above this. C3 - Turn back in the direction of the Heliport where you started. Fly along the coast with the sea on your left. You'll notice that the coast starts to curve to the right. Look directly ahead at this point and you should just be able to make out more land ahead of you. Head for this (If you can't see the land ahead then keep following the coastline, always keeping the sea on your left until you reach the next bit). As you fly across the water and get closer to the land you'll begin to make out a pointed rock. The coin is at the top of this. C4 - From the pointed rock, head a little way in over the land. You should see a road with a white house next to it to the left and a T-junction to the right. You want to take that road that heads off from the main coast road. Either side of the road are small clumps of trees. Pass one clump on the left, one on the right, another on the left then the road bends. Ignore the bend, look ahead and you'll see a tight pack of trees. The coin is in the middle of these. C5 - If you're still pointing in roughly the same direction as when you approached the trees hiding C3 then you should see a town ahead and to the right. Make for this town. On approach you'll be able to make out a black square building. Just to the right of this are two short red buildings. This is what you need Bob for; the coin is between the red buildings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 3: Missoula Mountains Mission 3-1: C1 - Rotate right from take off and fly directly over the control tower into the centre of town. You'll see a clearing with a park in it, in the centre of this park is a fountain and the coin is above it. C2 - Turn around and face the Heliport where you started. Just off to your right you will see the slope of a large dark mountain, you need to fly to the top of this mountain so keep ascending as you get closer, you should already be able to make out the highest point of the mountain, this is your goal and where the coin is. The peak is at 3500 altitude. You'll reach the side of the mountain before you reach the required height, so be careful not to crash! C3 - Rotate back in the direction of the waypoint and you'll see the town where you started, fly toward it but don't descend as you need still need some height for the rest of the coins. The river passes in front of the town, turn left along the river (you may need to angle your view down in order to see it using the D-Pad), putting the town on your right. Follow the river for a short distance, losing some height in the process; you want to get down to around 2000 altitude. Keep your view angled slightly down so that you can see the branch in the river when it comes. For reference only, opposite this branch is a stack of four square-ish grey rocks on in the mountainside. There's nothing on these rocks but there's another set a little further along in the direction you're travelling, also on the left. The coin is on the highest of this second set of rocks. C4 - Turn around so that you're looking directly across the river, you'll see some rocks/ledges in the side of the mountain in front of you. Fly to the top of this mountain and turn so that the main river is on your left. Just off to the right in your straight-ahead is a hill with trees over it, rotate right and you'll see a taller hill without trees on it, fly to this treeless hill. There's a single building on the top of this hill and you'll see the coin right next to it. C5 - Rotate around so that you're looking back in the direction of the river fork, also the waypoint direction. Fly forward and as you clear the mountain top, look down and you should see some black shapes in amongst the trees beneath the next hill. When you get closer you'll see that they're rocks, one with a house perched on top. Turn 180 degrees and opposite the house you should see the coin in a circle of trees. You should rotate and approach it sideways as contact with the ground here can end the mission. \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Mission 3-2 Note: More bad weather, so visibility is low. There are a lot of u-turn's in these instructions as the lack of unique landmarks was problematic. With practice you can use more direct routes. C1 - Take off and head straight forwards. At the base of the hill you reach is a straight line of trees, behind these trees is a road. Turn right and note the road goes into a tunnel. Fly over the tunnel bearing very slightly left and look for the exit of the tunnel on the other side. You'll see the coin in the middle of the road at this tunnel exit. C2 - Do a u-turn and head back toward the town where you started. You'll see the main road on the flat land to your left, follow this back into the centre of town. You'll reach the park where you found C1 in the previous mission. Look ahead to the junction at the edge of the park and you'll see a church with a clock on the side. The coin is on the roof of the church. C3 - Turn to look back toward the park from above the church. On the opposite side of the park are two apartment buildings close together, the coin is between them. You don't need Bob to pick it up, but you might rattle your rotors a bit on the roofs. C4 - Do another u-turn and fly to the mission waypoint. Fly low-ish. Ignore Carpenter for now and continue to follow the river. When the river branches to the right, take this branch. Continue along this route until the river becomes a lake. At the mouth of the lake (between the river's narrowest point and the lake itself), turn so that the lake is on your right and fly up the riverbank. If you're in the right place, you should make out a couple of buildings a short distance in front. You'll see the coin in between these buildings. If you can't see the buildings then you may have turned off before the lake as there are a couple of wider sections on the way. C5 - Go back down to the river and turn right to go back along it to the branch where you joined it. When you reach the main river, turn right and follow it between the grey cliffs. You may want to glance at the timer here; you need to fly down this river for around 50 seconds. Descend to an altitude below 100 while you're moving and you'll see the coin above the river at a height of around 50, ahead of you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 4: Hickory Canyon Mission 4-1: Note: Watch the timer, the train derails with 1:56 left on the clock which ends the mission. C1 - Take off and fly straight forward over the hill in front of you. When you get to the other side and have cleared the trees, look down and a little to the left and you'll see an industrial town below (this is actually the main mission area for 4-2). Descend and head toward the silver cylinder tower with the blue dome on the top. Just before you reach the cylinder, you'll see a sequence of six yellow squared archway things. You'll see the coin underneath them. Just fly low to get it; you can only get in from one side as there are trees in the way on the other. C2 - Turn to fly along the coastline, keeping the wide river on your left. Approach the main body of trees and gain some altitude to look over them. You should see a settlement to the right of the screen in amongst the trees. In the middle of the settlement is a small pile of hay bales. The coin is on these. C3 - Now fly across the river to the railway on the other side. If you've made good time you will see the train emerging from the tunnel on the right, it appears with around 7:10 left on the timer. If you're there too soon, just hover and wait. ** When it appears, count the carriages: Two locomotives, two coal carriages, two fuel carriages and then a trio of flatbeds. You'll see the coin on the centre flatbed, you don't need Bob. ** If you start to cross the river with less than 7:10 left on the clock then just head for the waypoint to find the train. C4 - Make sure you fly directly over the passengers in order to make the winch prompt appear, don't lower it yet though! Continue down the track in the direction the train is moving, with the river on your left. Eventually you'll come to a railway bridge across the river, don't cross it. Under the very first spar of the bridge where the track turns red is the coin. There is a route to get under there between the trees where the first red support is. C5 - Now cross the river and keep following the tracks in the same direction you were going before. Keep going past the heliport on your left and along a section where there are forests either side of the track. Eventually the forests will thin-out and you'll enter a more open area. Ignore the buildings you see on the left of the tracks and pay attention to the small clumps of trees on the right of the tracks. The first clump you'll encounter are just trees, but the second clump have a building in them as well as two silver cylinders with blue domes on top. This is why you need the winch prompt active, the coin is between these cylinders and only Bob can get in there. \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Mission 4-2: Note: The first two coin descriptions are a little vague. I've been as accurate as possible in sections of the land where there are no defining features or landmarks of any kind, just grass and trees. If you collect C3, 4 and 5 in the reverse order then it's quicker to get them first, but C1 is then much harder to find at the end because it's in the middle of a forest near the top of a hill, which is why I've decided it's best to get this one first. C1 - Directly in front of you when you take off is a hill with the peak just to the right, head for this peak. If you keep the peak in front of you and don't fly too high above the trees, eventually a little off to the right of the screen, just before reaching the peak, you'll see the coin. C2 - As you reach the top of that hill, rotate a little to the left and you'll see it continue to get higher, also below you there's a light sandy-coloured path between the trees. It's blurry and not defined but you should be able to make it out against the green of the rest of the land. Follow this sandy bit up to the higher part of the hill. Keep your eyes peeled because on the right of this sandy bit just as the trees thin-out, you'll see some different types of tree (these are easier to spot from a distance as they're just rounded sprites before you get close enough for the texture to appear). These trees form a cross-shape and in the centre of the cross is the coin. C3 - Turn toward where the waypoint marker points to get your bearings. Now turn back to the right and you should see the railway in the side of the hill opposite. Fly over to and follow the railway to the left, in the direction the train was travelling in the previous mission. When you reach the bridge, turn right and now follow the river. You should be descending all the time while you're doing this. The river widens as you pass over it and then when it starts to narrow you should spot the coin at water level in the centre of the river. C4 - Turn and head in the direction of the waypoint. Don't cross the river when you can see it, instead turn and follow the river to the right. Keep descending (if you flew the direct way over a hill) and beside the railway tracks you'll see the river narrows at a dam. You'll see the coin on the right of this dam. C5 - Continue following the river past the dam and you'll come to a red bridge; look down to the supports in the river, the coin is at the base of one of them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You now have all the coins and have gained access to the other locked section on the menu, which I won't spoil for you! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you feel the need to copy my work and pass it off as your own then be aware that I have a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for someone like you. Leave my work as my work and that'll be the end of it. BarbaricAvatar - August 2018.
