SMASH COURT TENNIS PRO TOURNAMENT ===================== =================== This guide for Smash Court Tennis Pro Tournament for the PS2 was written by thalivest and submitted on October 9th, 2011. ================== TABLE OF CONTENTS ================== 1. INTRO 2. CONTROLS 3. MODES 4. PLAYERS 5. PLAYER RATINGS 6. TROPHY ROOM 7. OPTIONS 8. POSITIVES 9. NEGATIVES ======== 1. INTRO ======== No real reason other than this one of my favourite tennis games ever, and one of the best ever in my opinion.. Also some FAQ's/ Guides are either too short or long, so I was just trying to give all the pertinent information while finding that happy medium. =========== 2. CONTROLS =========== "X" = Slice - adds reverse spin to the ball, stays low and slows down the pace of the shot "O" = Top Spin - adds forward spin to the ball, faster than a slice shot and higher bouncing than a flat shot "A" = Lob - high angle shot to place ball over opponent (usually if opponent is at the net) "A + Up"(when playing from the bottom of the screen, if playing at the top of the screen, press down) = Top Spin Lob - lob with forward spin "A + Down" (when playing from the bottom of the screen, if playing at the top of the screen, press down = Drop Shot - low short bounce right in front of the net *Note "A" = triangle button ======== 3. MODES ======== ARCADE ------ Win 4 matches in row. You can pick the first tournament, but then the following three are played chronologically. Difficulty level, number of games and tie breaks are chosen by the player. Men, women and doubles are available with doubles being available with human or computer partner. Prize: Unlock 2 hidden characters - Hitomi Yoshino & Red Ace PRO TOURNAMENT MODE ------------------- Pick a male/female player and compete in the four grand slam tournaments: -AUSTRALIAN OPEN- Location: Melbourne, Australia Venue: Rod Laver Arena 2nd Venue: Vodafone Arena Surface: Hard Forecast: Daytime Sunny -TOURNOI DE PARIS- Location: Paris, France Venue: Stade International de Paris (Court Centrale) 2nd Venue: Stade Internatinal de Paris (Court 1) Surface: Clay Forecast: Daytime -WIMBLEDON- Location: London, England Venue: Centre Court Surface: Grass Forecast: Daytime Overcast -US OPEN- Location: Flushing, NY, USA Venue: Arthur Ashe Stadium Surface: Hard Forecast: Night NOTE: I noticed when I played with a female (I chose Hingis) in Pro Tournament Mode, her opening match in the Australian Open took place on the Vodafone Arena (now Hisense Arena). Smash Court Tennis Pro Tournament could not get a French Open(Roland Garros) licence and that’s why the 2nd grand slam is called “Tournoi de Paris”. But Court Cenrale at the Stade International de Paris has the exact likeness of Court Philippe Chatrier at Roland Garros. Likewise Court #2 has the exact likeness of Court Suzanne Lenglen which is the 2nd major court at Roland Garros. 1st Rd - 2 games 2nd Rd - 2 games Quarter Final - 3 games Semi Final - 4 games Final - 6 games All matches have to be won by 2 games except at the US Open which goes to a tie break if no player leads by 2 games after denoted amount of goes in each rd. Although the choice is given to remove the win by 2 games feature in the options section thus who ever reaches the denoted number of games first, regardless of by how many will win the match. NOTE: The first 2 rounds are played vs. 2 of 3 fictional characters - Hitomi Yoshino, I. Francesca and A. Alvarado for the women, and Red Ace, N. Kienzl & M. Reno for the men. The real players are the ones you’ll face in the QF, SF and F. There are also missions along the way such as win 3 points with your forehand etc., in which you allocate points which can be used to obtain items from the prize room. Prize Room: Various Items (Player guides, 5th outfits, different camera angles an more) EXHIBITION ---------- Pretty simple, pick match (single or doubles), players, venue and play. You can decide the number of games, sets and difficulty level, and enable the use of any of the camera angles you have unlocked in Pro Tournament Mode. TIME ATTACK MODE ---------------- Win all four tournaments the the fastest time. CHALLENGE MODE -------------- Learn, practice and perfect the main skills of the game. The challenge will only be available after the practice is completed.. ========== 4. Reno Country: Chile Date Of Birth: June 11, 1983 Height: 5'11" Weight: 165 lbs Plays: Left Handed Backhand: One Handed Playing Style: N/A NOTE: “Net Player” would refer to “Serve And Volley” player in real life and “Fast Stroke” refers to a “Baseline” Player. Unfortunately female players (I. Francesca and A. Alvarado), and male players (N. Kienzl and M. Reno) cannot be picked by human players to play as or against. You can only play against them in Pro Tournament when the computer selects them as your opponent. Thus I was unable to rate them (see Section #5) as I’m unable to play with them. But they are pretty weak characters in the same vein as Hitomi Yoshino and Red Ace. ================= 5. PLAYER RATINGS ================= - Martina Hingis - Serve: 6.5 Forehand: 7 Backhand: 7.5 Volley: 8 Speed: 8.5 - Lindsay Davenport - Serve: 7.5 Forehand: 8.5 Backhand: 8 Volley: 6 Speed: 6.5 - Monica Seles - Serve: 7 Forehand: 8 Backhand: 8.5 Volley: 5.5 Speed: 7 - Anna Kournikova - Serve: 6 Forehand: 6 Backhand: 6.5 Volley: 8.5 Speed: 8.5 - Pete Sampras - Serve: 10 Forehand: 9.5 Backhand: 8 Volley: 9 Speed: 9 - Yevgeny Kafelnikov - Serve: 8.5 Forehand: 9.5 Backhand: 9 Volley: 7.5 Speed: 9 - Andre Agassi - Serve: 7.5 Forehand: 9 Backhand: 10 Volley: 7 Speed: 10 - Patrick Rafter - Serve: 9 Forehand: 8 Backhand: 7.5 Volley: 10 Speed: 9.5 Note: These aren't official ratings just my personal opinion based on my game playing experience. ============== 6. POSITIVES ============ 1. Beautiful volleying. No game since has matched realness and effectiveness of the volleys of Rafter, Sampras, Kournikova & Hingis. 2. Surfaces affect gameplay. Grass is actually faster and the ball stays lower while clay is slower, thus easier and more effective to serve and volley on grass than clay, while playing from the baseline is almost imperative on clay. 3. Playing style balance. Can serve and volley and play from the baseline. Only the surface gives advantage/ disadvantage, other than that, in comes down to your ability. 4. Players have their own unique styles and play to them. Rafter actually rushes the net (should do so a little more hardcourts), while Agassi stays back and pounds away from the baseline. And although Kournikova is not a net player in real life she does so in this game playing to her style in the game. 5. Can use licensed players in Pro Tour Mode, which can't be done in most tennis games. Also due to the inability to create your own player in this game. 6. Outfits, like the variety. "All white" for Wimbledon. 7. Balance. Have to be in good position to hit a powerful and accurate shot. Reaching for balls being out of position will result in a weak shot. 8. Footprints left in clay. Nice touch. ============ 9. NEGATIVES ============ 1. Speed of shots to fast. It needs to be slowed down a little to be more realistic. 2. Too easy to create wide angles. Takes away from skill and strategy. Makes the game come down to who uses the angled shot better. Keep the ability to hit wide angles but not so easy, but unlike SCTPT 2 where wide angles are difficult to create. 3. Inability to hit aces and service winners. Against licensed pros it's almost impossible to hit an ace or service winners when the setting is on hard. This is very problematic for me. 4. Very, and I mean very difficult to hit a ball out (wide) or into the net, and almost impossible to hit a ball long. I've never seen it happen in this game. 5. Serves almost always go in, occasionally wide but never long or into the net. 6. Weak shots (when a player is off balance and/or in a bad position) should also go wide, long and into the net, not always back into the court. 7. Being forced to hit a flat shot on a weak ball. You should only hit a flat shot if you choose to. You can hit a drop shot or lob, but the ability to hit a slice or top spin shot should be prevalent as well. 8. Deeper Pro Tournament Mode. More tournaments like adding the 9 masters events and year end championship, those 14 would be enough. Full 6 game, 3 (for women) or 5 (for men in slams and finals of Masters and Year End Championship) set matches, full 7 rounds for slams (128 player draw), full season with rankings, stats etc. 9. Can create your own player. Be able to create them and use them (play with or against) in all aspects of the game (exhibition, pro tour). 10. More players. Licensed and fictional ones. 11. Better replays, see Madden & FIFA. Be able to have control it, to rewind, fast forward, play it at game speed and in slow motion, zoom in/out etc. 12. Fake lobs form strange positions. Running lobs that can be hit from difficult positions. Hingis, Agassi & Kafelnikov do this the most. At times when you expect a weak reply they hit this lob. What's more frustrating and less realistic they'll do it as a return of serve. 13. Add a flat shot with the square button (was done is SCTPT2), not only done when your opponent hits a weak shot. 14. Change in weather. Not always the same for every tournament. Like Madden different time of day start, day to night matches, gloomy in Australia (rare though), sunny at Wimbledon, daytime in US Open etc. 15. Incorporate the surface carpet.
