Easily one of Konami's better works, it is largely ignored because it never drew the hype or following characteristic of many great games. Really, it is a shame. Strategy RPGs are far from the most popular of gaming genres, and I can understand that. And though Vandal-Hearts is not quite at the level of such classics like Shining Force II, or well-known games like Final Fantasy Tactics, it is still a solid game well worth playing. For those who are interested in enjoying this game, there are few resources for information. Less than half a dozen guides exist on this game. As one of the very few reference materials, this guide was originally meant to be a small, modest listing of characters and what job classes they should advance as. This is the second rewrite of this guide, after my third time playing through the game. The first two times I went through it, I was rather biased towards certain classes, and moreso, absolutely had to have all classes available, regardless of whether they were actually useful or not. This third time through, I was limited by no such handicap. As such, I was able to choose the classes that were most effective, and what a difference it made. Without having to baby my guardsman, I was able to use three Duelists, which was infinitely more useful. Without a Monk class to hinder my healing capabilities, my characters were able to attack with much less restraint. At this point, I have went through the game to the end with many different combinations of classes. I've come to a conclusion on which are the best, and which are utterly useless. Here's hoping you find this information useful. Though, as a warning, because of the very nature of this guide, spoilers are abundant and blatant. Should you not want to have the game spoiled, stop reading now. =============================================================================== REVISION HISTORY ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` Version 1.0 - 19 April 2000 - Initial release Version 2.0 - 24 April 2000 - Finished release. Characters ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Ash Lambert -- Ash Lambert grew up believing he was the son of a traitor. When everyone looked down on him, Clive Beckett helped him for reasons unknown to him. In spite of his deceased father's status, Ash was able to rise to the position of Platoon Leader in the Ishtaria Security Forces. His skills were so exceptional, his name got the attention of many, including Kane, Defense Minister Hel Spites' son, and commander of the Crimson Guard. Kane's taken it upon himself to consider Ash a rival (and one that needs to be "dealt" with, no less). In truth, Ash's father was never a traitor. He sought to safeguard the life of Arris the Sage from an assassination attempt, and was labeled a traitor so others could use as a political leverage. When Ash is sent to investigate the apparent disappearance of General Magnus, one of Ishtaria's most respected and famed war heroes, he uncovers a hidden coup d'etat by Hel Spites and Dolf Crowley and falls victim to the power of the Magic Stone, sending him into Time Limbo. When he reemerges, he finds himself three years into the future, where Hel rules as an emperor. He leads his allies in an attempt to correct the state of affairs that has befallen Sostegaria. During the course of events, Dolf, the forgotten son of Arris the Sage, pulls his own takeover and assassinates Hel, usurping power for himself. With his options limited, Ash journeys north in a last ditch effort to obtain some power capable of pacifying the Flames of Judgement. He finds the Vandal Heart, and prepares for his final confrontation to end the madness. -- Clint Picard -- Clint is a soldier under and friend of Ash. Unlike his brash companion Deigo, Clint is a very calm, level-headed individual. Being very well-informed of current events, Clint is possesses a keen mind and is usually the first to put events together and understand the their "true" effects and impacts. Awhile back, Clint's lover was murdered infront of his eyes. The killer was a man who had a grudge against Clint. Unable to stop it, this event left him feeling powerless and weak. As a result, he worries often at others' reckless streaks. During the course of events, when Ash is thrown into a time void by Dolf, Clint along with the rest of Ash's allies is taken prisoner by Hel Spites. He is held prison until Kira has a change of heart and helps him break free. -- Diego Renault -- A hasty character, Diego is the perfect foil to Clint. On the outside, Diego appears to be a charismatic person, who lives free of worries and concerns. Unknown to his companions, though, is that he is the son and heir to Carlo Libson, a wealthy Kerachi merchant. Carlo grew up dirt poor and his family was dying around him. Seeing this, he was disgusted and realized that money was the only way to have a good life. To this end he devoted his entire life to becoming rich. As a result, he was completely impassionate when his wife was dying. Diego saw this, and shunned his father. He left Kerachi and gave up his name. Carlo's goal was to give his family a better life, but losing sight of this, he ended up alienating his own son. Eventually, Ash and Diego's journey brings them to Kerachi. When Diego finally sees the side of his father that wasn't consumed with greed, he can finally forgive him. Diego is amongst the few that are still fighting a losing resistance when Ash returns three years later to change the tides of war. -- Eleni Dunbar -- Though Eleni is the daughter of General Magnus Dunbar, she is not blood related. Her parents were killed in because of war, which left her a war orphan. Magnus adopted her and gave her love and a home. When Magnus is sent to obtain the Magic Stone, and becomes possessed, Eleni is left on her own with only her tutor at her side. Eventually, after a brief mistrust, Eleni follows Ash, who is searching for her father. When Hel Spites' intentions are revealed, Magnus and Ash are sucked into a time limbo, and Eleni is arrested as a traitor. She is held in prison for three years. Eventually, Kira's guilt leads her to aid Clint and Eleni's escape from prison. Outnumbered and surrounded, Eleni would have been taken prisoner yet again, save for the timely intervention of Ash and his entourage. The prison is burned, and the group again sets out to find a means of defeating Dolf. -- Huxley Hobbes -- An old scholar, Huxley was hired by Magnus for the exclusive purpose of tutoring Eleni. When Magnus is sent in search of the Magic Stone, Huxley and Eleni are left to their own wits. After some initial confusion, the two join up with Ash, who also happens to be searching for Magnus. When Magnus is found, he is proclaimed a traitor and Huxley and Eleni are arrested along with him. Ash and company eventually rescue them. Wielding the power of the Magic Stone, Dolf sends Ash into a time limbo, and takes everyone left prisoner. Three years later, as Hel Spites rules with an iron fist and Huxley is fighting alongside Clive, Diego, and Dolan in a losing rebellion. It is at this time that Ash returns and forges a resistance to take down Dolf. -- Kira Wulfstan -- Kira appeared to Ash and his allies as a highly skilled mercenary. Though she was initially welcomed into the party, Kira was in truth a spy for Dolf. When Hel Spites and Dolf "eliminate" Magnus and Ash, Kira reveals herself to the rest. Three years later, when Ash reappears and the resistance is no longer a losing cause, Kira's ethics finally turn her around. She aids in Clint and Eleni's escape from prison, and as a result, is captured herself. Dolf and Xeno use her life as a bargaining tool to exchange for the Royal Ring. Though Ash's entourage agrees, they are obviously ripped off, and must race a death machine to save Kira. When they do, she is quickly forgiven and once again fights along side her comrades, though his time with no ill-intent in mind. -- Grog Drinkwater -- Grog is an infamous sailor. When his younger, envious brother, Hassan became a pirate and murdered all of Grog's friends, he turned to drinking himself into a stupor, drowning his sorrow away with alcohol and more alcohol. Eventually, Ash comes to see him, requesting a boat ride to the "Island of Madness." Thinking Ash is simply another useless bum, Grog promises to ferry them across if they can manage to slay the desert monster. Of course, Ash, being the hero of the story, is quite capable of such a feat, and Grog is held to his word. On his ship, Grog and Ash are attacked by Hassan. In the ensuing fight Grog slays Hassan, putting an end to his brother's misery. Afterwards, knowing their isn't anything else for him, Grog permanently joins Ash to fight the good fight. -- Dolan -- Dolan is a soldier and officer under General Magnus Dunbar. During the search for the Magic Stone, Dolan finds the mission is turning to the side of strange and decides it best to take a few of his loyal soldiers and leave before they are all killed. Monsters are sent to pursue them, and were it not for the arrival of Ash's party, they would have been slain. When Dolan finds out that Ash is here to find Magnus, Dolan agrees immediately to aid him. -- Amon -- A soldier under the command of Dolan. Amon is a capable but relunctant fighter whose only problem lies in self-confidence. He is somewhat romantically involved with Sara. Amon is captured during the initial coup by Hel Spites. He is held along with Clint and Eleni until Kira helps them escape, and they are subsequently rescued by Ash. -- Sara -- Also a soldier under the command of Sara. When Dolan realized something wasn't right, he attempted to pull out of Gilbaris Island immediately. Before they could be captured by monsters sent to slay them, Ash's party rescues them. When they are confronted by Hel and Dolf, Sara is sucked into a time warp along with Ash. When they reemerge due to the efforts of Zohar, they are three years into the future where Hel Spites holds absolute power. -- Zohar Abu Sa'id -- One of the greatest wielders of the arcane, Zohar's name is recognized through history. Hundreds of years ago, Zohar took an apprentice named Xeno. Hungry for power, Xeno banished Zohar to the time void so he would be unopposed. Here Zohar spent centuries. When Ash, Grog, Sara and Magnus arrive in the time void, Zohar initially dislikes them for disturbing the sleeping spirits. However, when he overhears them in regards to the Magic Stone, he is quick to aid them for fear of the Stone's omnipotent powers. It is through his efforts that Ash is able to return to his time and stop Dolf. It also gives Zohar the chance to teach his apprentice one last lesson. -- Darius -- Darius is an old man who was imprisoned by Hel Spites. Sharing a cell with Clint, Darius quickly takes the opportunity to escape along with Clint. When they are all rescued by Ash, Darius decides to tag along as well. He hails from the same town as Huxley. _______________________________________________________________________________ =============================================================================== II. Job Classes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Hero -- Characters: Ash Progression: Hero -> Champion -> Paragon -> Vandalier Usefulness: 8/10 for Hero, Champion and Paragon 10/10 for Vandalier Ash's class is one of the strongest in the game. Ordinarily it is a more powerful version of the Knight class, with a motley assortment of spells at its disposal. Its strength will match any normal character's attacks, hit for hit. His spells provide a means to deal with Armor class characters, multi-enemy attacks, and healing as well. If you decide to take Ash through the six Trials of Toroah, then he becomes, far and wide, the most powerful character in the game with the Vandalier class. In addition to becoming stronger, Ash gets stronger equipment. This alone would make him nearly unstoppable, but he has the added bonus of being able to cast every spell in the game, including (otherwise) enemy-exclusive spells like Kane's Plasma Wave. The only downfall to Ash is the fact that he is the main character. If he falls in battle, it amounts to Game Over. In addition, the Trials of Toroah factor in Ash's level to determine how strong the enemies are. This leads many people to use Ash as little as possible to make the various Trials easier. As a result, Ash will fall behind the rest of the party, and see very little use. -- Knight -- Characters: Clint, Grog, Dolan Progression: Soldier -> Swordsman -> Duelist Usefulness: 6/10 The Knight class is the standard physical fighter. It possesses strong attack, rather sturdy defense, and good range. Basically, it's your all-around strong class. All in all, it is pretty standard and unremarkable. It is probably best to keep all three characters in this class rather than the Armor class, due entirely to the utter uselessness that is the Armor class. -- Armor -- Characters: Clint, Grog, Dolan Progression: Soldier -> Guardsman -> Dragoon Usefulness: 1/10 To be quite frank, this is, in my opinion, the worse class in the entire game. It sports rather high attack power and phenomenal defense. Which, in itself is actually rather useful. The problem: you will never get to use either trait. Ever. The range on an armor class character can only be described as utterly pathetic. By the time it gets halfway toward an enemy, the battle would have long been over, ended by characters that are of an actual useful class, such as Zohar or Kira. In addition, as the battles progress and the further you get in the game, there will be more and more mage type enemies. Because they are fully capable of wasting an Armor class character with one spell (and, of course, not shy about making this apparent), you will likely have to devote precious turns to keep your Armor characters away from enemy mages. Turns essentially wasted. -- Archer -- Characters: Diego, Kira, Amon, Darius Progression: Archer -> Bowman -> Sniper Usefulness: 8/10 Though they do not deal massive damage like other classes, Archers are amongst the best there is. They can deal dmage from long range, that, if used correctly, amounts to attacks without getting countered. In addition, if you use them before your frontline melee characters, then you should weaken them to the point where the fighters can kill in one hit, again amounting in attacking without getting countered. They are also great because they can take out Airmen and Mage class enemies quickly and without hassle, both of which will likely be the most damagerous enemies you face. -- Airman -- Characters: Diego, Kira, Amon, Darius Progression: Archer -> Hawknight -> Sky Lord Usefulness: 7/10 Airmen class characters are great. They are powerful attackers, especially potent against normal melee fighters. In addition, they have excellent range, and are not hindered by obstacles, enemies or even water. The only downfall to Airmen is their excessive weakness to Archer type attacks. A single arrow can take them down if they aren't careful. Even, so, you should keep at least one of your characters as an Airman. I personally find the Archers to be more useful in most instances, but it would be bad to completely forego this class, as its power and range are not to be missed. -- Priest -- Characters: Huxley, Sara Progression: Healer -> Bishop -> Archbishop Usefulness: 9/10 The Priest class is one of the best in the game. They are your staple healers, and in a game where you cannot revive characters that have fallen during battle, this becomes exceedingly important. They have a very nice range of healing spells. On top of this, they have spells that offer bonuses in attack and defense. If that is not enough, there are their attacking spells. Though they are not on the same level as what a Mage class could even hope to cast, they are very powerful regardless. Even though Priests do not take damage very well, they can utilize the range provided by their spells and stay behind other characters. With the plathora of characters offered in this game, it is quite easy to hide your Priests to the point where they never even see the front lines of battle (except, of course, in those rare instances where it is funny to watch Huxley take his cane and throw down. -- Mage -- Characters: Eleni, Zohar Progression: Mage -> Sorceror -> Enchanter Usefulness: 10/10 With the sole exception of the Vandalier, this is far and wide, the strongest class in the entire game. As soon as Phase Shift becomes available, you will find all other characters to be completely obsolete in terms of dealing damage, range of attack and taking out the most enemies. It is not even close. Forget the fact that Mage class characters don't take damage well. Forget the fact that their physical attack is laughable. It does not matter. Zohar and Eleni will essentially be walking death machines. Anything that gets close dies. Spells like Phast Shift and Salamander end the battle so quickly, your other characters may never get the chance to get into the fray of battle. About the only characters that Mages have a problem with are other Mages, presumable because of Magic Defense. Of course, your Mages will survive because of their own Magic Defense, but other characters are not so lucky. But that is where Airman and Archer class characters come in as support. -- Monk -- Characters: Huxley, Sara, Eleni, Zohar Progression: Healer or Mage -> Monk -> Ninja Usefulness: 5/10 The Monk class isn't _that_ bad. It is actually a fairly decent combination of a fighter and a healer. And though it does a good job of utilizing both attributes, it does not excess in either. It has decent attacking power, but it will never match up with a pure melee fighter. It has decent healing ability, but it will never match up with a pure healer. The main problem with this class, though, is that to get it, you have to give up either the Mage class or the Priest class, both of which are better. Using a Monk for damage is simply not that bright when Mage class characters are so much better in that aspect. Using them over Priest class characters is equally as wasteful because Monks cannot compete in terms of healing. In addition, Priests also get rather powerful attacking spells that give them offensive capabilities all the same. If it didn't require your characters to give up a better class, this class might have actually been more useful. But you can't win them all, I guess. _______________________________________________________________________________ =============================================================================== III. Miscellaneous ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Level Gaining Method -- Now, this is one of the less orthodox styled RPGs. Normally you can develop for experience and gain levels to make your characters more powerful. This is not the case in Vandal-Hearts. You develop in each battle you fight all the same. The problem is, since you can't repeat a fight, and there are no random battles, you can't continuously train and get stronger. There is a nice trick to help out, if you should be so inclined as to make your characters stronger than they truly need to be. Since all experience is gained in a manner to even out levels, when you do something to a lower leveled person, you gain close to no experience. If you do something to a higher level person, you get more experience. But, if you do something to yourself, like use Bless Weapon or Mystic Shield, you get a set amount of exp. There is a stage called Castle Ruins in the second Chapter. It's right before you fight the mad Magnus. The battle starts off with you on one side and a door on the other side. Get to the door, and you will end the battle, but... if you don't get to the doorstep, you won't end the battle and you can go on forever. What's interesting is that there is a large wall that four Shooter Imps stand on and shoot at you during the course of the battle. On this wall are two healing circles. Healing circles are a panel that will recover some HP and MP at the end of each round to whoever stands on them. This is where the trick begins. Clear out all the enemies in the stage. Now have both Sara and Huxley stand on the healing circles. They can continue to cast Mystic Shield and never run out of MP. They will slowly gain levels. Be forwarned, this takes extremely long, as the experience gained from Mystic Shield is quite close to nothing. But with patience you will eventually get them to a pretty high level. After this, have all your characters use a Mage Oil on them and they will get a massive boost in experience. If some characters died during the fight (most likely your Airmen as the Shooter Imps are extremely annoying), or some character didn't bring a Mage Oil into the battle, just have them bring one into another battle and use it then. One last warning, though. The first is to completely ignore Ash from this process. If you level him up high, the Trials of Toroah will be extremely difficult. This is a bad thing, obviously. Although, if you want a challenge, go right ahead. ** Thanks to Wolverine, Inc.'s FAQ for the information. -- Trials of Toroah -- Throughout the game, you can pick up six different "keys." Some keys you can pick up directly in a battle. Others require you to pick up items that you can exchange with bar patrons for the actual keys. Anyway, since you cannot repeat any battles, once you past even ONE battle without grabbing the necessary item, you lose your chances at acquiring Ash's omnipotent Vandalier class. Anyway, once you have a key, equip it on Ash, and go into a Dojo. Leave, and the Dojomaster will be prompted to ask if you want to enter a trial. If you choose to accept, you'll be placed into a battle slightly different than any other in the game. They usually pit you against a group of the strongest enemies. In each battle, you have to collect a single "prism" in a treasure chest. If you don't collect the prism, the battle is worthless, and you can not repeat it. Also, keep in mind that all enemies that appear in trials don't have a set level. They are all dependent on Ash's level. Some battles range in difficulty. Some are difficult, others are easy as pie. If you are having trouble with the eariler trials, you can choose to wait until later in the game, when you have more allies and better spells. Once you have done this for all six trials, you Ash advance from the Paragon class into the Vandalier class. The Vandalier class is the best in the game, hands down. It gets a bonus in stats and better equipment than anything you can normally acquire. On top of this, Ash will now have access to EVERY spell in the game. -- Flow of Battle -- Battles in this game are turn-based. All your characters finish one turn, then the enemies all take their turns. A very simple system, indeed. Of course, in this game, all attacks are met with a retaliation, if they are within range, of course. This poses a problem in that once a character is "eliminated" during battle, the cannot be brought back (for that battle). Poor planning can turn the tide of battle in less than one turn. Ideally, at the start of a turn, both Eleni and Zohar should advance to a point where they can hit the most enemies with a spell (and, obviously use it). This should severely weaken many enemies and, if you are lucky, even take a few out right then and there. Next, move your archers into position to weaken any enemies. Try to avoid attacking any enemies that a melee character can reach and kill in one hit. At this point, move your Airman class characters in to kill any leftover enemies. Be careful to not advance them far enough that they are vunerable to any archers. Now, move all Knight class characters to pick off the remaining enemies. If there are not any enemies to attack, move them to form a defensive perimeter around your Mages and Archers. Now finish the turn with your healers and restore the HPs of any characters that were hurt. If none were, cast Mystic Shield on any vunerable party members. * * * * * * * * * Credits and Special Thanks ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` - Wolverine, Inc. - for his wonderful walkthrough on Vandal Hearts.
