CONTROLS %=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%= You only need a keyboard to type. That's all. =%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=% B. RULES %=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%= As you can see at the intro screen, you'll need to input commands that consist of a verb and a noun. BBC Micro version will always have the verb, but at PET version, there is no such rule. The objective of this adventure is to find treasures and return them into their proper place (as it's said in intro stage). If you take wrong choice, you can die and then you are put into limbo. If you do wrong thing at limbo, then the game will be over. The correct choice is always the same, but that does not make the game easier significantly... because of the limited knowledge about the game which makes you stuck, mainly, or the lamp which has limited power that could make you stuck in the dark. =%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=% C. GENERAL TIPS %=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%= You only need to KNOW the words that will WORK in this game. The game will give you some, but NOT all. Miss one important word, and you'll be stuck. The other trivial things: 1. Save the game at correct time. 2. Save the lamp energy, because the refill will be only once. 3. Know how/what to use each item. 4. Last but not least: You have to be experienced at text games like this. =%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=% D. WALKTHROUGH %=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%= --------------------------- The screenshot for this game is available at: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/pet/214884-adventureland/images --------------------------- This walkthrough is for Commodore PET version. Adventureland is the name of the file. After the intro screen, hit [Return/Enter] to start the game. D1. INTRO --------- Firstly you are asked if you wanna use a saved game or not. You save the game via tape device, a device which should be very outdated right now X_X Y=Yes N=No You are in a forest at the start of this adventure. Obvious exits and visible items are always given. Now, the game gives you two words that you may have to remember: SCORE and HELP. Example: TELL ME WHAT TO DO? help .... exactly like that. The other commands also work this way. You can type HELP, then the game gives you more words/"verbs" that you MUST remember. LOOK, JUMP, SWIM, CLIMB, THROW, FIND, GO, TAKE, INVENTORY, ... I'll try to explain some more: +LOOK: very useful if you have tried some plenty of words and you can't see where you are and what visible exits and items available any longer. But if you follow this walkthrough well enough, you won't need it >_> +INVENTORY: you can only have the most 5 items in your inventory. +SHORTCUTS: go north=n, go south=s, go west=w, go east=e, go up=u, go down=d. shore forest | | forest - meadow - shore ^ ^ | / \| v groove - swamp A simple map of this part. Hopefully, this is clear enough.. Down the shore is quick-sand bog not being drawn here. This is the series of command that passes this part. GO EAST GO EAST TAKE AXE GO DOWN BUNYON SWIM GO WEST GO WEST TAKE OX TAKE FRUIT TAKE AXE GO EAST CLIMB TREE TAKE KEYS GO DOWN CHOP TREE GO STUMP Other commands: help (at meadow) ---only 3 things will wake the dragon and 1 is dangerous. Don't do the dangerous one: don't bring mud here, otherwise you'll be dead. find treasure ---try the swamp help (at quick-sand bog) ---you may need magic words here The only magic word you see in the game this far. take mud ---to heal you if you are bitten by chiggers at the swamp. read web (at top of cypress tree) ---chop it down! (learnt the word: CHOP) Once you dead, you'll arrive at Limbo. Only UP and EAST can give you back to life, and arrive in the forest. The others send you to Game Over. D2. TREASURE HUNT 1 ------------------- You are inside the stump. Sign: Leave treasure here - say score. (learnt the word: LEAVE) You should know that the verbs that work usually can be used for more ^^ You know now that you have to find treasures and put them all here to beat this game. There are 13 of them, and we have two of them already! The rest of them can be found underground, and it's dark there, and you will NEED the lamp, but the lamp power is limited like I said above, so you have to conserve the lamp. You will start to be warned 24 turns before the lamp is dead, and when the lamp is dead, the lamp will be missing and you can't recharge it! You rub the lamp only twice, and no more to get two treasures. Otherwise you'll be dead and the treasure will be gone forever. LEAVE OX (LEAVE AXE) you can drop it anywhere LEAVE FRUIT TAKE LAMP RUB LAMP RUB LAMP GO DOWN TAKE RUBIES GO UP LEAVE RUBIES Once you arrive at Maze underground section you can't go back to the above ground again. You have to "teleport" using *thick persian rug*. Simple map Underground down the hall 8-sided-room | pet's ram - cavern------- | | royal anteroom | | v maze Beyond the maze is not important to draw. You should only know GO DOWN to go to the area with Flint & Steel. Then GO WEST to go to "Aladdin was here". Then GO DOWN to the area with the *thick persian rug* (this is Pointing Arrow area). Then GO DOWN again to reach the bottom of a chasm. The other exits will go around and around the maze or go to the area where Flint & Steel is. GO DOWN GO HOLE OPEN DOOR LEAVE KEYS GO HALLWAY LAMP ON (LIGHT LAMP) 'light' is also a verb to remember GO DOWN GO SOUTH TAKE BLADDER GO NORTH GO DOWN TAKE FLINT GO WEST GO DOWN TAKE RUG GO DOWN TAKE NET AWAY/GO UP AWAY Other commands: help (at pointing arrow) ---you may need magic words here The magic word is AWAY, as can be seen at the bottom of a chasm. D3. TREASURE HUNT 2 ------------------- You go back at the meadow. This part is done above ground. (LAMP OFF) to save lamp's energy GO SOUTH TAKE GAS GO STUMP LEAVE BLADDER/FLINT/RUG TAKE BOTTLE GO UP GO NORTH GO EAST TAKE FISH GO WEST GO STUMP LEAVE FISH LEAVE NET LEAVE BOTTLE If you don't bring the bottle with water to take the fish, the fish will die. If you don't take the net, the fish will escape back to the lake. Dropping fish at the stump is safe, although there is no sign of water inside... D4. TREASURE HUNT 3 ------------------- We are going back to underground again. Make sure you have: -Old fashioned brass lamp -Flint & Steel -Distended gas bladder -*thick persian rug* GO DOWN GO HOLE GO HALLWAY (LAMP ON/LIGHT LAMP) GO DOWN GO SOUTH GO UP LEAVE BLADDER LIGHT GAS GO HOLE JUMP SCREAM TAKE MIRROR GO THRONE TAKE CROWN (LEAVE FLINT) you can drop it anywhere, before you take the bricks GO WEST JUMP GO WEST TAKE BRICKS GO DOWN GO NORTH GO DOWN GO DOWN GO WEST GO DOWN GO DOWN LEAVE BRICKS TAKE FIRESTONE AWAY AWAY (LAMP OFF) this is optional to even more economize lamp's power GO SOUTH GO STUMP LEAVE RUG LEAVE MIRROR LEAVE CROWN LEAVE FIRESTONE Other commands: help (at royal chamber) ---a voice blooms out... blow it up, try the swamp leave mirror (at the same place with the rug) ---mIRROR LANDS SOFTLY ON RUG. lIGHTS UP AND SAYS: *dragon sting* and fades. i don't get it i hope you do. You shouldn't take "Loose Fire Bricks" before jumping, otherwise you'll be dead. You have to drop/leave mirror on the rug, otherwise the mirror will be broken. D5. TREASURE HUNT 4 ------------------- This is the final part of the treasure hunt, even if you are prepared well, you still can fail. You should be prepared: 1. Mud 2. Rug 3. Bottle 4. Lamp, of course The mud can be gone while on the way, in that case, you have to go back to the swamp and take it again. TAKE RUG TAKE BOTTLE LEAVE WATER TAKE MUD GO STUMP GO DOWN GO HOLE GO HALLWAY (LAMP ON/LIGHT LAMP) you can light the lamp before taking the mud to minimize the chance of the mud to be gone. GO DOWN GO NORTH TAKE BEES TAKE HONEY LEAVE MUD AWAY AWAY LEAVE BEES TAKE EGGS GO SOUTH GO STUMP LEAVE HONEY LEAVE EGGS LEAVE RUG SCORE If you don't use *thick persian rug*, there will be more chance for the bees to die in the bottle. In that case, you can take the bees again. Even if you have the mud in your inventory, there will be chance that you are still stung to death by the bees. After you type SCORE, the game will end. =%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=% E. BBC MICRO VERSION %=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%= Basic differences: 1. You can carry 6 items in your inventory right now. 2. You will need [Flint & Steel] every time you light the lamp. 3. [Flint & Steel] is now located above-ground. 4. As said above, the commands will at least have the verb. 5. Visible items and obvious exits are always there at the top of the screen. So, you don't need LOOK anymore. 6. You'll have nice explanation at the start of the game^^ Firstly, you are also asked if you want to restore previously saved game. The difference is you save the game inside the floppy disk (don't write protect it). You will be given some command at the intro: HELP, SAVE GAME, SCORE, INVENTORY, QUIT. Press [Return] afterwards. If I retype all the commands, perhaps that'd be boring... The command set above still works, but with the exceptions: 1. From the shore, GO NORTH to go to quick-sand bog instead of go down. Or, GO SOUTH then GO HOLE, then TAKE FLINT to take Flint & Steel. After that, GO UP, don't go down, or you'll be sent to Hell instantly. 2. Type SAY BUNYON, instead of BUNYON. That will teleport the treasure and the axe only. You should do this before taking Flint & Steel. 3. GO WEST from the advertisement can send you to the swamp quickly. shore quick-sand bog | | forest - meadow - shore ^ ^ | | \| groove - swamp - advertisement - hole 4. You have to type LIGHT LAMP. LAMP ON does not work. LAMP OFF does not work, type UNLIGHT LAMP instead, as indicated at Maze Of Pits. 5. At the Maze Of Pits, the directions are all the same, but without [Flint & Steel]. 6. The same with (2), SAY AWAY instead of AWAY. 7. Along Treasure Hunt 3, you have to carry Flint & Steel with you. 8. At the bottom of the chasm, you have to type DAM LAVA, instead of DROP BRICKS to collect treasure. 9. You can't collect *firestone* right away. You can go back to meadow first, store all the treasures (remember to drop *mirror* on the *rug*), TAKE BOTTLE, then go back to pointing arrow area using SAY AWAY. At the chasm, DROP WATER, then you can safely take *firestone*. Don't drop the water anywhere else. You have to go back to meadow again using rug and say away. 10. The best thing here is the mud never dry up and gone, and you can always successfully TAKE BEES if you have the mud with you. =%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=% F. ITEMS LIST %=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%= Below are some useful items: 1. Rusty Axe (magic word -bunyon- on it) ---The magic word is to teleport the *Small statue of a BLUE OX* and the axe out of quicksand. ---The axe is to chop cypress tree at the swamp. 2. Ring of skeleton keys ---To unlock the door at the dark hole below the cypress tree. 3. Evil Smelling Mud ---To cure chigger's bite. ---To avoid being stung by bees. ---You shouldn't carry it at the meadow. 4. Old fashioned brass lamp ---To see things when you're underground. 5. Flint & Steel ---To burn bladder at Royal Chamber. ---At some newer version, it's to light the lamp. 6. Swamp gas ---Fill empty wine bladder to blow bricks at Royal Chamber. 7. Patches of 'OILY' slime ---To recharge lamp energy 8. Loose fire bricks ---To dam lava at the bottom of chasm. 9. Bottle ---If it's filled with water, to put the *golden fish* in, so that it doesn't die. ---At some newer version, the water in it to be poured at *firestone*, so that you can take it. ---If it's empty, to put the bees in. 10. *Golden Net* ---While at your inventory, to prevent the fish from escaping. 11. *thick Persian rug* ---The magic word is to transport you to 'Pointing Arrow down' area underground. The magic word used at 'Pointing Arrow doen' area transporting you back to the sunny meadow. =%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=%=% G.
